New high-speed Jerusalem train gets stuck in tunnel-25-minute delay doubles scheduled journey time from capital to Ben Gurion Airport-By TOI staff-30 September 2018
The new electric, high-speed train from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv suffered a lengthy delay Thursday, with passengers reporting being stuck in a tunnel for 25 minutes shortly after leaving the capital’s Yitzhak Navon Station.Israel Railways confirmed the delay, and the cancellation of the next train, but offered no explanation. The route — which currently only goes as far as Ben Gurion Airport — began regular operations Tuesday. The train to the airport usually takes 21 minutes and runs every half hour. The hilly section from Jerusalem to Latrun has five tunnels and several miles of bridges, which afford dramatic views of the Jerusalem hills. In the coming months the line will be extended, first to Tel Aviv’s stations and eventually to Herzliya. Depending on the time of day, up to four trains will run each hour in both directions, traveling at up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) per hour. The first regular services began five months late; opening day was scheduled for the Passover holiday in April. The original estimated completion date passed years ago.The project was conceived in 2001, at an estimated cost of around NIS 3.5 billion ($978 million). Works began in 2005, only to be halted by environmentalist opposition until 2009. Tunneling recommenced in 2012. The final cost amounts to around NIS 6.5 billion ($1.8 billion). The train has been long awaited by travelers who until now have had only a slow rail ride that meandered through the Jerusalem hills on an old Ottoman-era track and took over an hour.
Tens of thousands flock to Western Wall for priestly blessing-Ceremony sees male descendants of the Kohanim priestly caste gather to bestow a benediction during the Sukkot festival-By AFP and TOI staff-30 September 2018
Tens of thousands of Jews gathered Wednesday at Jerusalem’s Western Wall for a special “priestly blessing” held under heavy police guard. The priestly blessing was part of the weeklong festival of Sukkot, or Feast of the Tabernacles, which in antiquity was a time of pilgrimage. The ceremony, which sees male descendants of the Kohanim priestly caste gather to bestow a benediction, involves the raising of hands to perform the blessing, with those conducting the blessing wrapped in prayer shawls. Many of the roads near the Old City were closed to private vehicles and traffic throughout the city was very heavy due to the festival.Police said that a large number of officers were deployed around the city in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the public amid heightened tensions. The Western Wall Heritage Foundation, which oversees the holy site, estimated that 100,000 people attended two ceremonies in the morning. They included US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, himself a member of the Jewish priestly caste.“It’s my opportunity to bless the people of Israel,” he told reporters ahead of the services.Friedman also used the opportunity to praise US President Donald Trump’s “excellent” speech on Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly.“I thought he laid out a very clear vision,” he said. “It’s consistent with what he’s been saying since he’s been the president about how he thinks the United States relates with the rest of the world.”
Haley tells PM that Palestinians should complain to Abbas, not Israel-US ambassador to the UN says she has no plans to meet with PA president while he is in the US; Netanyahu thanks her for her staunch support of Israel-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-SEP 30,18
NEW YORK — US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Friday the Palestinian people should complain to their own leader and not to Israel, and urged Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to resume peace negotiations with Israel.“We believe that the Palestinians are going to have come to the table. President Abbas is not helping the Palestinian people at all. He hasn’t acknowledged Hamas,” Haley said at a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Haley said she had no plans to meet with Abbas while he is in New York, where he addressed the UN General Assembly on Thursday.“The Palestinians, if they want to blame anyone, it shouldn’t be Israel,” the ambassador said. “They should be looking at President Abbas and saying, what are you doing for us?”Speaking to the press before their bilateral meeting, Netanyahu thanked Haley for her staunch support of Israel at various UN agencies.“With you, it’s better,” he said, after Haley asked him how things are going, referring to her strong pro-Israel stance at the world body, which has long been anti-Israel.The UN General Assembly Hall “still permeates with the stench” of the 1975 resolution that equated Zionism with racism, Netanyahu said.“I want to thank you for clearing the air out of that hall,” he told Haley, hailing the US administration’s decision to withdraw from UNESCO and the UN Human Rights Council, and defunding UNRWA.He also noted Haley’s effort in June to have the General Assembly condemn Hamas, which gathered a majority of voting countries but failed to pass due to procedural reasons.“That was just amazing, that we were finally able to do that. But there’s so much more to do,” Haley replied laughingly.“Well, you obviously have both the energy and the motivation and the spirit,” Netanyahu said, adding that the people of Israel and many of its friends are very appreciative of her work at the UN.“I felt that support. It’s really overwhelming to think that they’re paying attention to the little work we do here. It’s been really very nice,” he said.
PM asks UN Secretary-General to request IAEA investigation of Iran nuclear sites-Netanyahu wants inspections of sites whose existence he revealed in UNGA speech; Israeli leader also meets Rwandan president to discuss Iranian aggression-By TOI staff-SEP 30,18
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and asked that he request the International Atomic Energy Agency inspect what he said were previously unknown Iranian nuclear sites, whose existence he revealed in a speech to the UN General Assembly.Netanyahu on Thursday said one of the sites could contain up to 300 tons of nuclear material, and accused the IAEA of failing to investigate findings that he presented earlier this year about Iran’s nuclear program. It was announced Friday that he has asked Guterres to request an investigation by IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano.Netanyahu also raised the issue of the Israeli citizens and bodies of Israeli soldiers held by Hamas, telling Guterres that the UN must increase pressure on Hamas to release them. Netanyahu reiterated that he believes the UN has a particular responsibility on the issue as they brokered the 2014 ceasefire, during which IDF soldier Hadar Goldin was kidnapped as part of the Hamas violation of the agreement.Hamas is presumed to be holding the bodies of fallen soldiers Oron Shaul and Goldin, as well as Israeli citizens Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed.In his Thursday speech to the United Nations General Assembly (full text here), the prime minister said the IAEA, the UN’s nuclear agency, had failed to take any action after he revealed in April a nuclear archive that Israeli spies managed to spirit out of Iran, and so he was now revealing what he said was a “secret atomic warehouse” in the Turquzabad district of Tehran, a few miles from the archive.Netanyahu claimed the warehouse was used for “storing massive amounts of equipment and material from Iran’s secret weapons program,” which was quickly being moved to other parts of the city.He claimed some 15 kilograms (33 pounds) of radioactive material had been recently removed from this atomic warehouse and squirreled away around Tehran, endangering the capital’s residents. The site may contain as much as 300 tons of nuclear-related equipment and material in 15 shipping containers, he added. He did not specify what nuclear material was contained at the site. The disclosure came four months after Israel announced the existence of what it said was a “half-ton” of Iranian nuclear documents obtained by Israeli intelligence in the Shourabad neighborhood near Tehran.Israel said the cache proved that Iranian leaders covered up their nuclear weapons program before signing the nuclear agreement. Iran hasn’t acknowledged the alleged seizure. Both the archive and warehouse, he said, were proof that Iran had not given up its nuclear program. He urged IAEA director-general Yukiya Amano, who he called “a good man,” to “do the right thing” and “go and inspect this atomic warehouse immediately — before the Iranians finish cleaning it out. Inspect “right here, right now,” he urged, “and inspect the other sites we told you about… Tell the world the truth about Iran.”There was no immediate reaction from the IAEA, which Netanyahu said had ignored Israeli information on the nuclear sites and more than 100,000 documents on Iran’s nuclear program he revealed earlier this year.Pulling out more placards, Netanyahu also showed the plenum what he said were sites hidden near Beirut’s international airport housing precision missiles for the Hezbollah terror group, an Iranian proxy, and warned that Israel would act against Iran “whenever and wherever.”-Rwanda meeting-Netanyahu also met with Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Thursday, where the two leaders discussed regional threats and the Iranian aggression, according to an Israeli government statement. The two leaders also discussed the situation in the Horn of Africa and the peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea.Netanyahu apparently asked for Kagame’s assistance in advancing ties with additional African countries. In May, Rwanda denied it had ever made an agreement with Israel to take in deported asylum seekers, responding to Netanyahu’s claim that it had backed out of a deal he had spent two years working on.Agencies contributed to this report.
Hamas urges Abbas to lift Gaza ‘sanctions’-Terror group fears PA president may further slash funds slated for coastal enclave to pressure it to relinquish control-By Agencies-SEP 30,18
Gaza’s Hamas rulers are calling on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to lift what they describe as his “sanctions” on the coastal territory.Friday’s call followed Abbas’s threats to “give up responsibility” for Gaza if the Hamas terror group doesn’t respond positively to Egyptian efforts to broker a reconciliation between rival Palestinian factions.Abbas slashed funding to Gaza and cut salaries of Palestinian Authority employees there to pressure Hamas into handing over the territory, making it increasingly difficult for Hamas to govern.Hamas fears Abbas may reduce funding to health care and other services for Gazans.Abbas’s speech to the UN General Assembly Thursday contained an explicit threat to “give up all responsibility” over Gaza if Hamas does not agree to reach a deal with the Palestinian Authority. This was seen as a threat to stop transferring PA funds to Gaza in the near future.Hundreds of Hamas supporters marched in anti-Abbas protests late Thursday in the territory, burning posters of him after his speech.Hamas, an Islamist terror group that seeks to destroy Israel, seized control of Gaza after ousting pro-Abbas forces in 2007; the violent takeover led to an Israeli-Egyptian blockade on the enclave ever since, designed to prevent Hamas importing weaponry.

Powerful typhoon kills two, snarls transport for thousands in Japan-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-September 30, 2018
TOKYO (Reuters) - A powerful typhoon brought down trees onto railroad tracks and kicked up debris across Tokyo as it brushed past the Japanese capital early on Monday, killing two people and stranding thousands as train lines were closed or severely delayed.Typhoon Trami made landfall in western Japan on Sunday evening and threatened heavy rains, strong winds and landslides on the northern-most main island of Hokkaido, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The island was hit by a deadly earthquake last month. The typhoon, rated by Tropical Storm Risk as a category 1, the lowest on a five-point scale, killed two people and injured almost 130, public broadcaster NHK said.Another two people were missing, it said, and almost 400,000 households were without power.Aerial footage on NHK showed hundreds of people waiting outside train stations, with several major commuter lines closed since Sunday. More than 230 flights were canceled, mainly in northern Japan, NHK said.Kansai International Airport in Osaka in western Japan said it had opened its runways as scheduled at 6 a.m. (2100 GMT Sunday), after being closed since 11 a.m. on Sunday. The airport had only fully reopened on Sept. 21 after being heavily flooded earlier that month by Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years.(Reporting by Tokyo Newsroom; Writing by Chang-Ran Kim; Editing by Paul Tait)
Indonesia to accept international help after devastating quake and tsunami-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-September 30, 2018
JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia will accept international help for disaster response and relief after a major earthquake and tsunami hit Sulawesi island, killing at least 832 people, the head of the Indonesian investment board said on Twitter on Monday.President Joko Widodo agreed to accept international help on Sunday night, Thomas Lembong said. Lembong said he would coordinate private sector help from around the world.Authorities scrambled to get food, aid and equipment into Sulawesi on Monday as the death toll appeared certain to rise, three days after the 7.5 magnitude quake and tsunami hit the island.Countries such as Thailand and Australia have already offered to help.(Reporting by Gayatri Suroyo and Fransiska Nangoy; Editing by Paul Tait)
Mass burials to begin as Indonesia toll tops 800-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-Harry PEARL-,September 30, 2018
Mass graves were being readied Monday for hundreds of victims of an Indonesian quake-tsunami as authorities battled to stave off disease and reach desperate people still trapped under shattered buildings. With the death toll already at over 830 and expected to rise further on the devastated island of Sulawesi, there were growing questions about why an early tsunami-warning system had notbeen working for years. The strong 7.5-magnitude quake struck Friday, toppling buildings and sending walls of seawater crashing into Palu, a city of about 350,000.Exhausted survivors scoured make-shift morgues for loved ones, and authorities struggled to dig out the living or assess the scale of the devastation in more remote regions beyond Palu.Grim warnings came that the eventual toll could reach thousands."The casualties will keep increasing," said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. "We will start the mass burial of victims, to avoid the spread of disease."Burials were expected to start later Monday.Rescuers raced against the clock and a lack of equipment to save those still trapped in the rubble, with up to 60 people feared to be underneath one Palu hotel alone. Two survivors have been plucked from the rubble of the 80-room Hotel Roa-Roa, the search and rescue agency said, and there could still be more alive.Desperate survivors turned to looting shops for basics like food, water and fuel as police looked on, unwilling or unable to intervene."There has been no aid, we need to eat. We don't have any other choice, we must get food," one man in Palu told AFP as he filled a basket with goods from a nearby store. The disaster agency said a tsunami warning system, which might have saved lives, had not worked for six years due to a lack of money."Our funding has been going down every year," the disaster agency's Nugroho said.- 'When the wave came, I lost her' -Many have spent the last two days desperately searching for loved ones. One survivor, Adi, was hugging his wife by the beach when the tsunami struck on Friday. He has no idea where she is now, or whether she is even alive."When the wave came, I lost her," he said. "I was carried about 50 metres. I couldn't hold anything. The water was spinning me around," he said."This morning I went back to the beach, I found my motorbike and my wife's wallet."Others have centred their search around open-air morgues, where the dead lay in the baking sun -- waiting to be claimed.Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited the region Sunday, urging a "day and night" effort to save all those who can be saved. But Nugroho indicated sheer power of will may not be enough."Communication is limited, heavy machinery is limited... it's not enough for the numbers of buildings that collapsed," he said. The situation in outlying areas was even less clear.Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla said the final death toll in the more remote regions could be in the "thousands" since many places have still not been reached.Indonesia’s Metro TV on Sunday broadcast aerial footage from a coastal community in Donggala, close to the epicentre of the quake. Some waterfront homes appeared crushed but a resident said most people fled to higher ground after the quake struck."When it shook really hard, we all ran up into the hills," a man identified as Iswan said.- Ports, bridges, roads shattered -Save The Children program director Tom Howells said access was a "huge issue" hampering relief efforts."Aid agencies and local authorities are struggling to reach several communities around Donggala, where we are expecting there to be major damage and potential large-scale loss of life," Howells said. The national disaster agency said it believed about 71 foreigners were in Palu when the quake struck, with most safe.Three French nationals and a South Korean, who may have been staying at a flattened hotel, had not yet been accounted for, it added.Getting enough aid in may prove a problem.Satellite imagery provided by regional relief teams showed severe damage at some of the area's major ports, with large ships tossed on land, quays and bridges trashed and shipping containers thrown around.A double-arched yellow bridge had collapsed, its ribs twisted as cars bobbed in the water below.A key access road had been badly damaged and was partially blocked by landslides. The initial quake struck as evening prayers were about to begin in the world's biggest Muslim majority country on the holiest day of the week.Indonesia is one of the world's most disaster-prone nations. It lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and many of the world's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.A massive 2004 quake triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including 168,000 in Indonesia.
Israelis rescued from snowstorms in India; others remain trapped but safe-Two hikers pulled off mountain after suffering from altitude sickness; rescue organization working to reach remote villages where some have been stuck for a week-By Stuart Winer-TOI-30 September 2018
Eight Israelis were rescued from a snowstorm in India reportedly after sending out an alert in a handwritten letter that was beamed via cellphone to their parents back home.Dozens of Israeli hikers have been caught in blizzards in northern India, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement Wednesday. The early storms in the Himalayas region have cut off roads, electricity, and communication infrastructure, leaving many hikers stranded.Nine Israelis became trapped last week in the northern village of Chatru, among a group of 30 jeeps, the statement said. The Israelis were cut off from all communication but managed to send a handwritten letter with a local guide who walked to a point where there was cellphone coverage and sent the letter in a message to their families, according to a Hebrew-language media report.“We are stuck in a snowstorm which will go on for at least another three days,” Hadashot TV news reported they wrote. “It is important to us to give a message to our parents to not be worried. We ask for your quick help as soon as possible, the snow is getting stronger.”Concerned parents contacted the Foreign Ministry which alerted the Magnus International rescue organization.Eight have been rescued, the ministry said Wednesday. The last, who is in nearby Manali, was expected to be reached later in the day, Hadashot reported. In another rescue a local helicopter plucked two hikers who were stricken with altitude sickness from a remote village, the ministry said.Media reports said they were in the village of Kurgiakh at an altitude of 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) and used a satellite phone to raise the alert with an Israeli insurance company’s emergency center.Twenty Israelis were in Kaza, the largest village in the snow-stricken area.Conditions there are “reasonable,” but Israeli hikers were increasingly pressuring rescuers to come get them before roads reopened, the Foreign Ministry said.Another nine Israelis are in the village of Sissu, and Magnus is sending jeeps from Manali to rescue them, the statement said.Magnus said in a statement, “Since Saturday we have been working with the aim of helping dozens of hikers who are in north India, and are maintaining the connection with Israeli groups in the various villages.”“We stress that at this stage we are working with full force for the swift and secure rescue of hikers who are in life-threatening danger and simultaneously we are taking care of the welfare of hikers who are in safer places.”Magnus urged hikers to stay where they are and not move from relatively secure locations.
Major quake and tsunami cause deaths in Indonesian city-[Reuters]-By Tabita Diela and Gayatri Suroyo-YAHOONEWS-September 30, 2018
JAKARTA (Reuters) - A tsunami caused deaths when it hit a small city on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday after a major quake, collapsing buildings and cutting off power, officials said, although the exact number of casualties was not clear. The tsunami up to 2 metres (six feet) high struck beaches as dusk fell in Palu, a sleepy but growing tourist resort, and the nearby fishing town of Donggala, closest to the epicenter of the quake 27 km away, officials said."The earthquake and tsunami caused several casualties ... while initial reports show that victims died in the rubble of a collapsing building," National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters. "The number of casualties and the full impact is still being calculated."Sutopo said the disaster caused a power outage that cut communications in Donggala and surrounding areas. The Communications Ministry is working to repair 276 electricity base stations.Officials said aftershocks, the communications breakdown and the power outage made it hard to coordinate rescue efforts.More than 600,000 people live in Palu and Donggala."The 1.5- to two-meter tsunami has receded," Dwikorita Karnawati, who heads Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency, BMKG, told Reuters. "The situation is chaotic. People are running on the streets and buildings have collapsed. There is a ship washed ashore."BMKG had earlier issued a tsunami warning but lifted it within the hour.Amateur footage shown by local TV stations, which could not immediately be authenticated by Reuters, showed waters crashing into houses along Palu's shoreline, scattering shipping containers and flooding into a mosque in the city. The national search and rescue agency will deploy a large ship and helicopters to aid the operation, said agency chief Muhammad Syaugi, adding he had not been able to contact his team in Palu. The armed forces and police will also provide troops and equipment to support the emergency response, officials aid.Oil company Pertamina said its fuel depot in Donggala had been damaged in the incident though there was no oil spill. Fuel tanks had shifted in the quake and ship loading facilities were disabled among other damage. There were no reports of damage to producing oil and gas fields in the area, according to the energy ministry.Palu, hit by a 6.2 magnitude quake in 2005 which killed one person, is a tourist resort at the end of a narrow bay famous for its beaches and water sports. In 2004, an earthquake off the northern Indonesian island of Sumatra triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, killing 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia. Some people took to Twitter saying they could not contact loved ones. "My family in Palu is unreachable," Twitter user @noyvionella said.Palu airport was closed. The area was hit by a lighter quake earlier in the day, which destroyed some houses, killing one person and injuring at least 10 in Donggala, authorities said. The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the second quake at a strong 7.5, after first saying it was 7.7."Aftershocks are still continuing," Nugroho said."Communication has been crippled at this time, causing difficulties in coordination and reporting with the region."Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.A series of earthquakes in July and August killed nearly 500 people on the holiday island of Lombok, hundreds of kilometres southwest of Sulawesi.(Additional reporting by Fransiska Nangoy, Fanny Potkin, Wilda Asmarini, Fergus Jensen, and Jessica Damiana; Editing by Matthew Mpoke Bigg)

Saudi forces kill three ‘terrorists’ in restive Shiite region – state media-Intensive firing during shootout at ‘hideout’ in eastern region of Qatif also injures 3 security officers; Shiites claim discrimination in Sunni kingdom-By AFP-TOI-SEP 30,18
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Three Saudi-wanted “terrorists” were killed in a shootout with security officials in the Shiite-majority eastern region of Qatif, state media said Thursday.Three security officers also suffered minor injuries as they raided the “hideout” in a residential neighborhood on Wednesday, the official Saudi Press Agency said citing a security spokesman. The Saudi men were wanted for “terror incidents in Qatif” in the kingdom’s Eastern Province, the spokesman added without offering details.“No other resident of the building or passersby were hurt due to the intensive firing from inside the place towards the street,” he said.Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province has seen bouts of unrest since 2011 when protesters emboldened by the Arab Spring took to the streets demanding an end to what they say is discrimination by the Sunni-dominated government. The Shiite community is estimated to make up between 10 and 15 percent of the kingdom’s population of 32 million, but the government has released no official statistics. The government denies discrimination against Shiites. The region was also home to Nimr al-Nimr, a fiery Shia cleric and government critic who was executed in 2016 on terrorism charges, sparking widespread outrage and leading to renewed tensions with regional rival Iran.
Five get organs donated by 17-year-old son of film director run over and killed-Family of Ari Nesher praised for ‘extraordinary’ act; recipients include emergency heart transplant patient; kidneys go to a teen and a 10-year-old boy-By TOI staff-SEP 30,18
Organs from 17-year-old Ari Nesher, the son of acclaimed Israeli director Avi Nesher, who was killed in a Tel Aviv hit-and-run, were donated to five recipients on Friday, the National Transplant Center said, praising the family for its “exceptional nobility.”Ari Nesher and a friend were riding an electric bike on the city’s northern Rokach Boulevard early Monday morning when they were hit by Israeli Premier League soccer player Itzhak Asefa, who subsequently fled the scene. Nesher had serious head injuries and died Thursday. After his death, the family announced that they would donate his organs to honor Ari, who had been a volunteer with the Magen David Adom rescue service and had always worked to help others.“From a belief that there is nothing more important than saving lives, the Nesher family, with exceptional nobility at this most difficult time, decided to donate Ari’s organs with the hope of saving others,” the transplant center said. His heart was donated to a 60-year-old man whose condition had deteriorated rapidly in recent days. His lungs went to a man, 50, at the Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikvah and the liver was transplanted into a 36-year-old in Tel Aviv. One kidney went to save a 17-year old at the Schneider Children’s Medical Center and another was transplanted into a 10-year-old boy in Haifa. His corneas would be transplanted in the coming days, the center said.Ari was the son of acclaimed Israeli film director Avi Nesher. In a statement shortly after his death, Nesher’s family said their son had celebrated his 17th birthday surrounded by loved ones at the hospital.“Our Ari was not just a handsome boy. He was a talented, curious, witty and happy child,” his family eulogized.“He was a gifted young filmmaker and always tried to help anyone in need. Ari dreamed of being a paramedic in the army, and last year he volunteered every week with Magen David Adom.”“From an early age, Ari evoked in everyone around him the desire to live and rejoice and take part in this wonderful thing called life,” they said.He will be buried on Sunday, September 30, at the Moshav Udim cemetery. The second teen was taken to Petah Tikva’s Beilinson Hospital, where he is recovering from moderate injuries.Asefa was arrested shortly thereafter by police who said his blood alcohol level was found to be five times the legal limit.Following the announcement of Nesher’s death, Hadashot news reported that police are planning at Asefa’s next remand extension hearing to raise the charges against him to murder, for which he could serve up to 20 years.According to a Wednesday Hadashot news report, Asefa and seven other friends had purchased three bottles of vodka and won an extra bottle at a club they visited the night of the accident. It remained unclear whether Asefa himself drank from that alcohol before getting into his car and hitting Nesher. While police said they deemed that he had alcohol in his system upon his arrest, it is possible that he had consumed it after fleeing the scene.Authorities said they were still questioning Asefa’s friends and witnesses at the bar to confirm the soccer players’ conduct that evening. The Tel Aviv crash took place close to where 13-year-old Eylon Shalev-Amsalem was killed by a suspected drunk driver in July. Eli Bar Zakai has been charged with manslaughter, causing grievous bodily harm, obstructing an investigation, tampering with evidence, drunk driving and speeding in connection with Shalev-Amsalem’s death on July 26-27.The Supreme Court last week permitted Bar Zakai to leave his home on Yom Kippur to pray at the closest synagogue, but rejected his appeal to release him completely from house arrest.Just weeks after Shalev-Amsalem’s death, a disabled military veteran was killed when he was hit by a Hummer when crossing the street in the same area of northern Tel Aviv.
Spanish suspect in Jerusalem hit-and-run was deported in 2011-Journalist Julio de la Guardia also briefly worked under false name for Iranian TV; is suspected of killing ultra-Orthodox pianist Chaim Tukachinsky-By TOI staff-30 September 2018
A Spanish journalist suspected of killing a gifted and up-and-coming ultra-Orthodox pianist in a Jerusalem hit-and-run accident had previously been deported from Israel, Channel 10 reported Wednesday. The journalist, Julio de la Guardia, has worked as a foreign correspondent in Israel for many years for a series of Spanish outlets. He was kicked out of Israel in 2011 after a domestic dispute, the television report said, citing Foreign Ministry officials. It was not immediately clear why de la Guardia, 51,was issued a new work visa and allowed to return to Israel.During the investigation into the weekend accident, the TV report said, it was discovered that de la Guardia also worked for a Spanish-language Iranian TV company under an assumed name. This employment was for a period of a few months, The Times of Israel has learned. The accident occurred some time after midnight Sunday. After hitting Chaim Tukachinsky, 31, a pianist, composer, and conductor, the suspect drove away and was arrested around an hour later. He was found to have a blood alcohol content three times the legal amount.De la Guardia has reportedly confessed. On Monday night he was reportedly released to house arrest at the home of the Spanish consul, although other sources said Thursday that he is still in police custody.Tukachinsky was killed at central Jerusalem’s Paris Square while walking back from the Western Wall on the first night of the Sukkot holiday.De la Guardia told police he was being harassed by three Palestinians on motorbikes who were following his car, in which he had his three dogs, and that they were trying to corner him; he said he was trying to get away from them when the incident occurred, The Times of Israel has learned. He also said he stopped the car a short distance from the accident, not knowing exactly what had happened, but left quickly when locals approached him and he feared they would attack him. He later approached a police patrol vehicle with its lights flashing, and told the officers it was likely him that they were looking for.Tukachinsky, formerly a resident of Kiryat Motzkin, had left his ultra-Orthodox yeshiva at the age of 18 in favor of attending a music academy in Jerusalem, where he excelled in his undergraduate and graduate degrees.“I never understood why people raise an eyebrow when they look at me, a Haredi person playing piano,” he told the Ynet site in 2015. “For me, I’ve always been Haredi and always played piano. I strayed from the path [set for me] and I left my studies in the higher institutions of yeshiva to be a professional pianist.”The son of immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Tukachinsky said he received his first professional training at the age of 10.“When my mother emigrated from the Soviet Union, she wasn’t allowed to take any money, only property, so she brought a piano,” he said. “I took quite an interest.”Tukachinsky was buried on Tuesday.
US Supreme Court Justice Kagan won’t discuss Kavanaugh after fiery hearing-Jewish judge speaks of the importance of seeking consensus on the court and having it be above politics, especially ‘in a time of acrimony and partisanship’-By brian melley-OCT 1,18
LOS ANGELES (AP) — US Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan declined to talk Thursday about the confirmation process that could seat Brett Kavanaugh and tip the nation’s highest court to a conservative majority.“I think given the events of today that’s the one question I’m not going to answer,” Kagan told law students during an appearance at the University of California, Los Angeles. “We’re right in the middle of events that are swirling around and I just want to leave it at that and make no news with respect to anything I say.”Kagan, who is Jewish, spoke as the Senate Judiciary Committee grilled Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the California psychology professor who contends that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her decades ago.The committee was expected to vote Friday on whether to recommend that the full Senate confirm Kavanaugh, who has repeatedly denied the allegations. For the moment, the Supreme Court is one member short. Justice Anthony Kennedy retired earlier this year.Kagan told the students that the justices worked “super hard” to find consensus after the death of Antonin Scalia in 2016 temporarily left the panel with only eight judges.“None of us wanted to look as if the court couldn’t do its job,” she said. “I think we all felt as though the country needed to feel that the court was a functioning institution no matter what was happening outside.”The court did have a handful of 4-4 decisions, including a deadlock in 2016 in United States v Texas where an equally divided court allowed a lower court injunction to stand that blocked President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Parents of Americans immigration program.Even with a full court, Kagan said consensus-building, “especially perhaps in a time of acrimony and partisanship in the country at large, makes a lot of sense.”“The court’s strength as an institution in American governance depends on people believe it having a certain legitimacy … that it’s not simply an extension of politics,” she said.
