The army this week published unedited footage of a visit by the IDF chief of staff to southern Israel last week on its official YouTube page, including shots of classified documents and an intelligence officer’s assessment of last week’s Gaza rocket fire, in an apparent slip-up.The military removed the video from its Hebrew-language YouTube page once they were alerted to the apparent mistaken broadcast. The Israeli Air Force simulated a large-scale conflict in the Gaza Strip this week as part of a nation-wide aerial exercise, as tensions ramp up in the Palestinian enclave after a massive flare-up last week, the army said.“As part of the southern portion of the exercise, dozens of fighter jets simulated strikes on hundreds of targets in the Gaza Strip in a short period of time,” the military said in a statement.The exercise included actual sorties over the Gaza Strip, with Israeli aircraft filming the coastal enclave.The Israel Defense Forces added that the air force also practiced giving support to troops in the case of a ground invasion of Gaza.Israel last fought a war with Hamas-led fighters in Gaza in 2014, the 50-day Operation Protective Edge. In recent months, tensions along the border have ramped up, including a day in late May that saw heavy mortar and rocket fire out of the Strip and Israeli bombing of dozens of sites in Gaza.Officials warned the flare-up could have easily snowballed into a larger conflict, something both sides say they do not seek.“We stood up to all the challenges and we are ready for any activity where we are needed,” said the head of the air force’s 105th Squadron, which operates F-16 fighter jets.The aerial drill, which kicked off Sunday, simulated warfare not only in the Gaza Strip, but also in the north, in Lebanon, and Syria, the army said.The military said the timing of the exercise was not tied to the recent unrest in the Strip, however, the army’s statement about the drill could be seen as a tacit threat to the Gaza-ruling Hamas terrorist group.The army said a central aspect of the exercise was to test the air force’s ability to operate in multiple fronts at the same time. Superbug infections rising among injection drug users-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 7, 2018

NEW YORK — One type of superbug bacteria is increasingly spreading among people who inject drugs, according to a new government report.Users of heroin and other injection drugs were 16 times more likely than other people to develop severe illnesses from MRSA, said the report published Thursday."Drug use has crept up and now accounts for a substantial proportion of these very serious infections," said Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University, one of the study's authors.The U.S. is in the midst of its deadliest drug epidemic ever. While overdose deaths have been the main concern, some studies have noted HIV and hepatitis C infections are spreading among drug users. The authors say the new report is one of the first — and the largest — to highlight how superbug bacterial infections are spreading, too.MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, often live on the skin without causing symptoms. But they can become more dangerous if they enter the bloodstream, destroying heart valves or causing other damage. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The star of a live television interview in Iran’s new nuclear workshop wasn’t the head of the country’s atomic agency, but the three centrifuges labeled in English in the background, advanced devices Tehran is prohibited from using by the nuclear deal with world powers.The placement of the centrifuges, identified as IR-2M, IR-4, and IR-6, may have served as a subtle warning to Europe as it tries to salvage the atomic accord after US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from it and restore US sanctions.In recent days Iranian officials from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on down have vowed to boost the country’s uranium enrichment capacity. The moves they have outlined would not violate the 2015 nuclear accord, but would allow Iran to quickly ramp up enrichment if the agreement unravels.“I think they’ve been quite clear in saying that if the US pulls out and the EU doesn’t live up to its side of the deal, it will rapidly increase its enrichment capacity,” said Ian Stewart, the head of a nuclear proliferation study called Project Alpha at King’s College London. “It doesn’t mean that it would go for nuclear weapons, but it does mean they could rapidly do that if they chose to do so.”Under the nuclear deal with world powers, Iran accepted limits to its uranium enrichment and gave up its stockpiles in exchange for the lifting of crippling international sanctions. Western nations and Israel have long suspected Iran of covertly seeking a nuclear weapons capability alongside its civilian program. Khan used to build Islamabad’s nuclear weapons program and later sold to Iran, Libya, and North Korea.The IR-2M, IR-4, and IR-6 models are all believed to produce three to five times more enriched uranium in a year than the IR-1s, according to Western anti-proliferation experts.Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran’s nuclear agency, said Wednesday night that the IR-6 is 10 times more effective than the IR-1.During the live state television interview at Natanz, a nuclear facility with underground bunkers protected from airstrikes, Salehi said a new workshop there that was nearly ready to open could build 60 centrifuges a day. He said it could build all three of the displayed models.It wasn’t clear whether the centrifuges displayed were working models of the IR-2M, IR-4 and IR-6, though they resembled pictures of the three previously circulated by Iranian media.“The IR-2M and the IR-4 have passed the research and development period and we can mass produce them, but due to the [nuclear deal], we don’t do it yet,” Salehi said. He said the IR-6 had some faults but could be mass produced after solving them.Not on display was the IR-8, one of Iran’s most advanced prototypes, which Western experts believe is at least 16 times more effective than the IR-1. A 2016 report by Iran’s pro-reformist Arman newspaper described the IR-8 as 24 times more effective.Salehi said the IR-8 was too big to be produced in the new workshop, though another workshop could be built nearby for it. He said that model remained years from mass production.For now, Iran remains within the terms of the nuclear deal. Facebook denied that and said the data access was to allow its users to access account features on mobile devices.More than half of the partnerships have already been wound down, Facebook said. It said on Tuesday it would end the Huawei agreement later this week. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran access — albeit briefly — to the US financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so.An investigation by Senate Republicans released Wednesday sheds light on the delicate balance the Obama administration sought to strike after the deal, as it worked to ensure Iran received its promised benefits without playing into the hands of the deal’s opponents. Amid a tense political climate, Iran hawks in the US, Israel and elsewhere argued that the United States was giving far too much to Tehran and that the windfall would be used to fund extremism and other troubling Iranian activity.The report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations revealed that under president Barack Obama, the Treasury Department issued a license in February 2016, never previously disclosed, that would have allowed Iran to convert $5.7 billion it held at a bank in Oman from Omani rials into euros by exchanging them first into US dollars. If the Omani bank had allowed the exchange without such a license, it would have violated sanctions that bar Iran from transactions that touch the US financial system.The effort was unsuccessful because American banks — themselves afraid of running afoul of US sanctions — declined to participate. The Obama administration approached two US banks to facilitate the conversion, the report said, but both refused, citing the reputational risk of doing business with or for Iran.“The Obama administration misled the American people and Congress because they were desperate to get a deal with Iran,” said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, the subcommittee’s chairman.Issuing the license was not illegal. Still, it went above and beyond what the Obama administration was required to do under the terms of the nuclear agreement. Iran argued that other sanctions — such as those linked to human rights, terrorism and missile development — were scaring off potential investors and banks who feared any business with Iran would lead to punishment. Fierce wind damages nearly 65 power poles in south Sask.-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-June 6, 2018

About 65 power poles near Coronach, Sask. have been severely damaged after a storm blew through the area Monday evening.SaskPower said it believes a strong gust of wind, also known as a plough wind, knocked down power poles north of Coronach.There is extensive damage to a power line that feeds the Poplar River Mine, which is a surface coal mine.A spokesperson from the mine says they are currently running on power from their backup generator.Billy Gossen lives in Coronach and experienced part of the storm.He said his daughter's baseball game ended early due to hail. He found his backyard furniture blown off the deck when he returned home.SaskPower is still assessing the damage and said a construction crew is heading to the site.SaskPower is not aware of any other affected customers, other than the coal mine, and they currently have no expected time for repairs to be complete.

May was 5.2 degrees above the 20th century's average for the month.Weather stations in the nation broke or tied nearly 8,600 daily heat records in May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported. It hit 100 in Minneapolis on May 28, the earliest the city has seen triple digits."The warmth was coast-to-coast," said climate scientist Jake Crouch at NOAA's Centers for Environmental Information.What made May seem even warmer was that April was unusually cool for much of the United States, he said. Wisconsin had its coldest April followed by its second warmest May.The United Kingdom , Germany and other places also set May heat records, but overall global figures for the month are still being tabulated, Crouch said.It was especially warm at night in the U.S during May. The overnight low temperature averaged 52.5 degrees nationwide. Andrew MacCorquodale says Canopy Growth Corporation is going to sell recreational marijuana online when it becomes legal, but how much of the company's business will come through the internet is a wild card.Canopy emerged as one of the big winners in the lottery to see which applicants get to sell pot legally in Saskatchewan. The company won five of the 51 permits — the largest single allotment in the province.Canopy already supplies medical marijuana to patients with legal prescriptions. MacCorquodale said it will draw on that model when setting up the recreational side.MacCorquodale said it's going to be interesting to see how the online side of the business evolves.For instance, he said someone may go to the retail store initially to check out the selection of products and get a sense of the owners."Once you know what you like and you just want to re-order, it's quite possible that the e-commerce platform may become more popular for its convenience factor," he said.ID on delivery-One of the big issues is verifying the age and identity of the customer."Without question, new customers would be age-verified, and the recipient of the product upon delivery would be age-verified and verified against the individual who ordered it," he said.The province is also curious about how the online sales side will shake out. Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Corp. (SLGA) spokesperson David Morris said ensuring the age and identity of the customers is a concern.Getting those checks and balances in place will be the responsibility of the retailer, he said."The term and condition of their permit, they will have to ensure that they're not selling to minors, they'll have to use a carrier that has an ID-ing process as part of a condition of their sale," he said.Morris said the province is also looking at ways to ensure that the Saskatchewan companies sell to Saskatchewan customers."As the regulator and permit holder we would expect that they would comply with the rules in terms of where they're selling product," he said."Certainly if there is an issue, there is a sanctioning process.
