Alberta carbon tax prompts fierce oil and gas competitiveness debate-[The Canadian Press]-Dan Healing, The Canadian Press-June 8, 2016-YAHOONEWS
CALGARY - The impact of Alberta's new carbon levy on the oil and gas industry was hotly debated in Calgary on Wednesday, a day after it was passed by the NDP government.Alberta Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd, who spoke at an industry conference, insisted the province can compete with neighbouring Saskatchewan, which doesn't have a carbon tax."We're still pretty competitive overall in Canada," said McCuaig-Boyd. "We're one of the lowest (tax) jurisdictions and, I always have to remind people, we don't have a provincial sales tax.:But Gary Leach, president of the Explorers and Producers Association of Canada, said the carbon tax could drive investment away to other provinces or the United States."We're competing in a North American market," he said. "The price for our energy exports is set outside of Alberta. We don't set the prices. So to the extent where our industry is shouldering a competitive burden that our competitors are not, that is a serious concern."Beverly Gilbert, national commodity tax leader for law firm Borden Ladner Gervais, said there's no question that Alberta producers will face higher costs and a "huge compliance burden" as a result of the carbon tax."They will be paying this non-refundable tax that people in Saskatchewan will not be paying, for instance, on things like venting and flaring," Gilbert said. "That makes us less competitive."Gilbert acknowledged, however, that the fact that Alberta has no provincial sales tax gives it a substantial advantage that producers in other provinces don't have. The carbon levy, to take effect Jan. 1, is one element of a climate-change strategy intended to reduce Alberta's carbon footprint. It is expected to bring in $3 billion in 2017-18.Cenovus Energy (TSX:CVE) spokesman Brett Harris said his company has supported Alberta's climate change initiative from the start and would like to see it extended across North America so there's a "level playing field" for all competitors."We think over the long term it actually gives Alberta a potential competitive advantage because it establishes us as a world leader, especially in terms of oil-producing jurisdictions," he said.Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter.

Ottawa's giant downtown sinkhole being filled with concrete-[CBC]-June 9, 2016-YAHOONEWS
It will take days and possibly weeks to make Rideau Street safe again, but Ottawa's downtown core is gradually returning to normal a day after a giant sinkhole opened up unexpectedly.Overnight, truck after truck poured concrete into the sinkhole — which spread across the entirety of Rideau Street and is about three storeys deep — in an effort to stabilize the area and protect nearby buildings. Other crews were busy pumping out hundreds of litres of water. The city is expected to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. ET today to provide an update on the situation. The sinkhole formed at about 10:30 a.m. ET Wednesday near the corner of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive, at a light rail construction site next to the Rideau Centre just two blocks east of the Château Laurier hotel.City officials say it was fortunate no one was hurt.A water main and a natural gas pipeline also broke, and the city warned Thursday morning that water in the downtown core could be discoloured."This may affect taste but doesn't pose a health risk," the city said on social media.Power remains out for two buildings close to the site:- 73 Rideau St.- 45 Rideau St.Hydro Ottawa hopes to have power restored by about noon.Cause of sinkhole remains unclear-Exactly why the sinkhole formed remains unclear Thursday morning, but what is known is that it formed over a vein of sand, silt and fractured rock so unstable, that workers completing the light rail tunnel below had to inch along cautiously for fear of causing a cave-in."Everybody knew that that was going to be a bad area, that special precautions would have to be taken," a source familiar with the light rail project told CBC News Wednesday. But Steve Cripps, director of Ottawa's rail implementation office, was unwilling Wednesday to draw a direct link between those soil conditions and the sinkhole."We don't know if these soil conditions have caused this. It's really too early to speculate," Cripps said.Mayor Jim Watson said Wednesday it may take a few days to come up with the cause."We hope to have that answer, obviously, in the next few days," Watson told reporters at a news conference. "We just don't know how long it's going to take … it's a significant sinkhole in the downtown core."-Rideau Centre, Shaw Centre reopened-The sinkhole formed next to one of the city's largest shopping malls, the Rideau Centre. The entire mall was evacuated Wednesday but reopened as usual Thursday, though the Bay and a glass walkway that crosses Rideau Street — providing an excellent view of the sinkhole — remain closed. Some businesses nearby also remain closed due to a lack of hot water and natural gas.The nearby Shaw Centre, also evacuated Wednesday, has reopened.Parked van fell into hole as road collapsed-Soon after forming on part of the road, the sinkhole stretched from Rideau Street's south sidewalk to the north sidewalk. A van parked on Rideau on the north side of the sidewalk, as well as a light standard, fell into the hole as it grew.Tom Herlihy was on Rideau Street near the Château Laurier when he heard and smelled natural gas."A high-pressure natural gas line escaping is very distinct, it's a high-pressure whistle. You could smell it in the area immediately, and people were running away from it, you could tell something was amiss," he said.Herlihy went to an upper floor of the Château Laurier to get a better look."I caught the hole expanding and the car falling in and the gas just roiling the water, causing the dirt underneath the street to erode and collapse. And it's really deep," he said.

SODOMY & ANIMAL SEX BRINGS JUDGEMENT ON THAT NATION
LEVITICUS 18:22-30
22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.
24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:
25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.
Most animal sex acts not against Canada's bestiality law - court-[By Ethan Lou]-June 9, 2016-YAHOONEWS
TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's bestiality law only bans sexual acts that involve penetration, the country's Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, a blow to advocacy groups who argued animals should be afforded the same protection from exploitation that humans are given.Supreme Court judges ruled 6-1 in favor of a man from British Columbia in western Canada convicted for sexual assault and bestiality after he involved the family dog in the abuse of his two stepdaughters. The man, known only by the initials "D.L.W." to protect his stepdaughters' identity, successfully appealed his bestiality conviction in a provincial court, arguing that according to the law, the offense of bestiality requires penetration, which his actions did not involve.Justice Thomas Cromwell, writing for all concurring judges, said in the decision that penetration has always been required to secure bestiality convictions and courts do not have the power to rule otherwise."Any expansion of criminal liability for this offense is within parliament’s exclusive domain," he wrote.Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella, the lone dissenter, wrote bestiality is ambiguous under the law, which she says intends for all animal sex acts to be illegal.A bill that in part seeks to define bestiality as all inter-species sexual activity is before lawmakers, but it is still in its early stages.Camille Labchuk, executive director of the Animal Justice group, an animal rights group which was allowed to intervene in the case, urged parliament to pass the legislation quickly."People who sexually abuse animals are sometimes linked to sexually abusing children as well, as the accused did in this case," she said. "That's a really good reason parliament needs to act."D.L.W. was originally convicted of 13 offenses involving his stepdaughters, including one charge of bestiality, and is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence.(Reporting by Ethan Lou in Toronto; Editing by Alan Crosby)

Toronto mom calls anti-abortion flyers 'inappropriate,' pulls them from mailboxes-[CBC]-June 9, 2016-YAHOONEWS
Two Toronto mothers say they are concerned about graphic anti-abortion flyers being delivered to homes in two west-end neighbourhoods and one is taking it upon herself to remove them from mailboxes.Liz Phillips, who lives in Roncesvalles, and Maya Bastian, who lives in Parkdale, say the flyers are disturbing, inappropriate and being viewed by children picking up the mail. Each flyer has two photos, one of a seven-week old fetus in utero, and another of an aborted eight-week-old fetus on a white background. Both photos are framed by green. They are printed by the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform.Phillips and Bastian say teenage girls delivered the flyers to their respective neighbourhoods this week.Phillips, a mother of two sons, aged 7 and 9, found the flyer in her mailbox on Wednesday. She decided to clear her block of the flyers by going to each home, removing the flyers from mailboxes and replacing them with sheets she printed herself, explaining her action and indicating that she has kept the flyers for anyone who still wants to view them."I'm pro-choice, so I don't like the messaging itself. I also don't assume that everybody on the block thinks the same way," Phillips said. "My main concern was with the graphic nature of the brochures."Phillips said one of her neighbours, walking behind her on his property, was surprised to see her but agreed with her action after she talked to him about it. She said neighbours on other blocks are also removing the flyers from mailboxes. But she said she doesn't want to be "policing" her neighbours' thoughts."I've kept copies at my address. I just want to prevent anyone from being upset by something that is kind of inappropriate."Toronto police say it is not illegal for Phillips to remove the flyers because the printed matter is not addressed, they haven't been processed by the post office and therefore not considered mail. Breaking and entering involves a residence, not a mailbox.-Images called 'obscene'-Bastian said her five-year-old daughter found the flyer in her mailbox on Sunday and the discovery led to a discussion of abortion, a conversation that she said she did not want to have with her child until she was older. She said her daughter had nightmares for two nights after seeing the imagery."My first instinct was just rage. Why would anyone put this where a child could see it?" she asked. "It's disturbing even to an adult."Bastian said she explained abortion to her child without going into the details. "It was really hard to explain abortion but I respect her a lot and that is the relationship we have."Her next step was to email her MP, Arif Virani, who represents Parkdale-High Park, and her city council representative, Coun. Gord Perks, about the flyers and she plans to file a complaint with Advertising Standards Canada, non-profit, the advertising industry's self-regulatory body."To me, it's obscene. It's just as obscene as if I were delivering porn flyers. The images are burned into my brain. If it is in my brain as a 37-year-old, then what is it doing to a five-year-old? "Bastian said she will "take this as far as I can take this."The Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, an anti-abortion organization based in Calgary, did not return calls.
Canadians frustrated over Senate amendments to assisted dying bill, says Ambrose-[The Canadian Press]-June 9, 2016-YAHOONEWS
OTTAWA - Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose says changes proposed by the Senate to the Liberal government's proposed new law on medically assisted dying are a sign of a bigger problem.Senators voted 41-30 on Wednesday to amend Bill C-14, to allow suffering patients who are not near death to seek medical help to end their lives. The change, if accepted, would delete a requirement that a person's natural death be reasonably foreseeable, removing the central pillar underpinning the legislation. The amendment replaces the eligibility criteria in the bill with the much more permissive criteria set out in last year's landmark Supreme Court of Canada ruling, which struck down the ban on assisted dying. That sets the Senate on a potential collision course with the government. But Ambrose says it also circumvents the will of the elected House of Commons, just as she said the Supreme Court did in setting parameters around doctor assisted death."We have the courts making laws in this country and now we have an unelected Senate changing the laws of an elected House," Ambrose told a news conference Thursday."There's even a larger debate here, which I think is upsetting a lot of my constituents and a lot of people across the country."Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould has signalled that the government is unlikely to accept such an amendment, saying a lot of work went into ensuring a balance between recognizing personal autonomy and protecting the vulnerable.Ambrose agreed with Wilson-Raybould that the bill approved in the Commons and sent to the Senate strikes the right balance, although she actually voted against it.The Senate is expected to continue debating the bill and voting on other amendments into next week.

Hundreds evacuated as wildfire rages near Arizona town-[The Canadian Press]-The Associated Press-June 9, 2016-YAHOONEWS
YARNELL, Ariz. - Hundreds of people evacuated their homes as a wildfire raged near the Arizona town where a 2013 blaze killed 19 members of an elite firefighting crew.Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Dolores Garcia said 250 to 300 people left their homes in the town. The fire grew to 600 acres, but crews expected it to ease somewhat during the overnight with cooler temperatures and higher humidity. There have been no reports of injuries, the Yavapai County sheriff's office said.About 140 firefighting personnel were battling the blaze, supported by three air tankers and two helicopters making blaze suppression drops. Garcia said three unoccupied buildings have burned but no homes have been lost near Yarnell, about 60 miles northwest of Phoenix. The cause of the blaze was being investigated, but Garcia said crews had ruled out lightning. It was burning south and east of the site of the Yarnell Hill Fire in which members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots died when they got trapped by the flames nearly three years ago — the deadliest U.S. tragedy for wildland firefighters in several decades. That lightning-caused wildfire destroyed nearly 130 homes in the area.On Wednesday, some Yarnell homeowners said they saw smoke and received a voluntary evacuation notice on their cellphones."It's horrific," said Yarnell resident Jerry Florman told the Arizona Republic over the telephone as she left town around 6:30 p.m. "I'm halfway down the mountain with the dog. I'm guessing there will be plenty of people saying, 'I'm not going to go back.' It's so hard."Florman and her husband, Kurt, lost their home in the fire three years ago and later purchased another home nearby. The paper said the Flormans hoped that this fire would be extinguished quickly and be nowhere as devastating.A Red Cross shelter for evacuees was set up at Yavapai College in nearby Prescott.Highway 89 through Yarnell was shut down as U.S. Forest Service crews did back-burns and dug trenches while air tankers dropped slurry loads before nightfall.Authorities said the fire appeared to be moving up mountain slopes to the northeast of Yarnell and away from the town, but its western flank still was threatened.

Resistance to India joining nuclear suppliers group softens-[Reuters]-By Shadia Nasralla and Francois Murphy-June 9, 2016-YAHOONEWS
VIENNA (Reuters) - A U.S.-led push for India to join a club of countries controlling access to sensitive nuclear technology made some headway on Thursday as several opponents appeared more willing to work towards a compromise, but China remained defiant. The 48-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group aims to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons by restricting the sale of items that can be used to make those arms. It was set up in response to India's first nuclear test in 1974.India already enjoys most of the benefits of membership under a 2008 exemption to NSG rules granted to support its nuclear cooperation deal with Washington, even though India has developed atomic weapons and never signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the main global arms control pact. But China on Thursday maintained its position that the Non-Proliferation Treaty is central to the NSG, diplomats said. The handful of other nations resisting India's admission to the group, including South Africa, New Zealand and Turkey, softened their stance somewhat, opening the door to a process under which non-NPT states such as India might join, diplomats said."There's movement, including towards a process, but we'd have to see what that process would look like," one diplomat said after the closed-door talks on Thursday aimed at preparing for an annual NSG plenary meeting in Seoul later this month.Opponents argue that granting India membership would further undermine efforts to prevent proliferation. It would also infuriate India's rival Pakistan, an ally of China's, which has responded to India's membership bid with one of its own.Pakistan joining would be unacceptable to many, given its track record. The father of its nuclear weapons program ran an illicit network for years that sold nuclear secrets to countries including North Korea and Iran."By bringing India on board, it's a slap in the face of the entire non-proliferation regime," a diplomatic source from a country resisting India's bid said on condition of anonymity.Washington has been pressuring hold-outs, and Thursday's meeting was a chance to see how strong opposition is.U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrote to members asking them "not to block consensus on Indian admission to the NSG" in a letter seen by Reuters and dated Friday. Most of the hold-outs argue that if India is to be admitted, it should be under criteria that apply equally to all states rather than under a "tailor-made" solution for a U.S. ally.Mexico's president said on Wednesday his country now backs India's membership bid. One Vienna-based diplomat said it had softened its stance but still opposed the idea of India joining under conditions that did not apply equally to all.(Editing by Catherine Evans and Hugh Lawson)

Five EU states push for Georgia visa waiver By Andrew Rettman-JUN 9,16-EUOBSERVER
BRUSSELS, Today, 14:36-Five EU states have urged the bloc to grant visa-free travel to Georgia at the earliest opportunity for the sake of EU “credibility”.Interior and foreign affairs ministers from Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania issued the appeal in a letter, seen by EUobserver, on Thursday (9 June) to the Dutch presidency of the EU Council and the EU foreign service. The letter said they hoped that an agreement could be reached at a home affairs ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg on Friday or a foreign ministers’ meeting on 20 June. They spoke out after France, Germany and Italy, at an EU ambassadors’ meeting on Wednesday, blocked the move.Germany, which led the rebellion, cited domestic public concern over an alleged crime spree by gangs of Georgian nationals. The letter said that since Georgia had fulfilled all EU conditions for the visa waiver “we need to deliver on our side as well”.“Any further postponement to take a decision will undermine our credibility and might have adverse effects on European integration-related reforms in Georgia as well as in other partner countries,” the five countries added.Ukraine has also fulfilled European Commission visa-free conditions, with EU diplomats to discuss its waiver on 14 June. However, Germany has indicated that it might delay the Ukraine decision as well. One EU diplomat said Germany delayed the Georgia move because it wanted to grant the waiver to Ukraine at the same time. The diplomat said Germany might delay Ukraine to use the waiver as leverage on the Minsk ceasefire accord.“Some member states would slow down visa liberalisation for Georgia in order to appease Ukraine,” he said. He added that EU visa policy “should help in keeping Ukraine fully on board in the Minsk process”.The Minsk deal, which was brokered by France and Germany last year, obliged Russia to pull out of Ukraine and Ukraine to devolve power to what are today Russia-controlled regions. The EU diplomat said if things go well, both states should get the visa perks in September. The European Parliament must ratify the move, but that process would be hard to complete before the summer break even if EU states gave the green light to MEPs, the diplomat said.Speaking to EUobserver in Brussels on Wednesday, Georgian president Giorgi Margvelashvili said he received “strong support” from MEPs when he visited Strasbourg on Tuesday. He said the visa move would help “pro-Western and pro-European” parties retain support in Georgia elections in October.
Brexit would hit Benelux and Ireland hard, says study By Peter Teffer-JUN 9,16-EUOBSERVER
Brussels, Today, 09:25-If the United Kingdom votes to leave the European Union, the economies that face the biggest hit in the EU would be Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, a Dutch study said on Thursday (9 June).“There is a relatively large amount of trade between these countries and the UK, and they will be hit the hardest by the trade restrictions that would follow a Brexit,” said a report by the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, an advisory institute of the ministry for economic affairs. It calculated that, depending on the post-Brexit scenario, GDP in the Netherlands could fall between 0.9 percent to 2 percent.Without a new free trade agreement to replace the current borderless trade between the UK and the Netherlands, the direct impact of a Brexit could cost around €575 per person in the Netherlands.Under the assumption that trade leads to innovation and productivity, the per capita loss would be €1,000, the report said. For the UK, the hit would be even harder without a new trade deal.“The UK losses in 2030 ... would be around 4 percent of GDP. And, if we assume that innovation would lag behind due to reduced trade levels, these losses may even increase to nearly 9 percent of GDP.“In that case, the UK losses would be similar to those experienced during the 2008–2009 crisis.”The losses estimated by the Dutch study are significantly higher than Britain citizens themselves expect to suffer.A survey published on Wednesday suggested undecided voters believed leaving the EU would leave them £71 (€90) worse off a year. The reports were published two weeks before British citizens go to the polls, on 23 June.It came as the Leave campaign criticised the UK government's decision to extend the deadline for registering to vote by 48 hours. On Tuesday evening, the website where voters needed to register before being able to take part in the referendum crashed. On Wednesday, the government announced it would allow registrations until midnight on Thursday.“They’ve just told the House of Commons that their website crashed last night because of the high demand, but we know that the government and their allies are trying to register as many likely Remain voters as possible,” Vote Leave campaigner Matthew Elliott said.Meanwhile, the campaign continues. Two former prime ministers are expected to hold a speech in Northern Ireland on Thursday, arguing for the UK to remain in the EU.John Major, of the Conservative party, and his former rival Tony Blair, of Labour, will share a podium to say that leaving the EU could “tear apart the United Kingdom”.“Not just a shrunken economy, not just a diminished United Kingdom on the world stage, but a smaller country in a very real and literal sense,” Major will say, according to a draft of the speech which was leaked to the British press.“The most successful union in world history would be broken apart for good.”There are fears that Scotland, generally more pro-EU than the rest of the UK, would want to have a second independence referendum if the UK leaves the EU without the Scots' consent. And in Northern Ireland, the fragile peace between nationalists and unionists could come under strain if a land border with the Irish republic were to return, the prime ministers will say.
MEPs say Turkish president undermines democracyBy Eric Maurice-JUN 9,16-EUOBSERVER
BRUSSELS, Today, 09:15-MEPs have accused Turkish politicians of undermining the rule of law by stripping the immunity of 138 MPs who are under investigation, in a move that could result in prosecution for parliamentarians critical of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In their first debate on the issue on Wednesday (8 June), MEPs from all political groups criticised the Turkish authorities and accused Erdogan of trying to "silence the opposition and grab more powers".During the debate, with the EU neighbourhood commissioner Johannes Hahn, they called on Turkey to respect the rule of law and freedom of expression and to protect minority rights.Centre-right MEP Renate Sommer said Turkey was now becoming a "presidential dictatorship". Gabi Zimmer, leader of the leftist GUE group, said she was "flabbergasted that it is possible in Europe to create such a climate of fear and intimidation".The immunity of the MPs was lifted on 20 May through a reform of the constitution adopted by a parliament dominated by Erdogan's supporters. As a consequence, 138 MPs including 50 deputies from the pro-Kurdish HDP party could be prosecuted for criticising Erdogan or charged with supporting terrorism.Erdogan signed the bill into law on Wednesday. On 20 May, the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, said the vote was "a blow to Turkish democracy and political freedom". He added that "the gulf with European norms and values is widening".Speaking to MEPs on Wednesday, commissioner Hahn said lifting immunity should be "based on transparent criteria, not political considerations".He said that the rule of law was the basis of Turkey's political and economic progress and asked Erdogan to show whether he was "serious or not" in wanting to bring his country closer to Europe.
Northern corridor could reduce 'the cost of everything in the North,' says researcher-[CBC]-June 8, 2016-YAHOONEWS
The concept of establishing a "northern corridor" to reduce the cost of living in Canada's North is moving ahead, with the publication of a new research report on the idea. The corridor would be a pre-approved area where companies could build transportation infrastructure such as pipelines, highways, railways and electrical lines, connecting northern communities to the South. The idea is to get some of the initial work — planning, surveying and land use consultation — out of the way, clearing the path for investment later. Kent Fellows, a researcher with the University of Calgary and one of the report's authors, says it could have a big impact on northern communities, namely "lowering the cost of everything in the North.""We really want to get out ahead and coordinate development in the North," Fellows said."If you can improve infrastructure you can reduce the costs — not only of getting commodities and resources out of those regions, but getting imports into those regions."The corridor is not a new idea. The report notes that several Mid-Canada Corridor studies were done in the late 1960s. It also notes that the idea of a new, cross-Canada network hasn't been discussed for almost 50 years. The northern corridor would connect to Canada's existing transportation network, which the report calls "southern-focussed." It says the current system is closed off to a big part of the country, inhibiting development opportunities in the North.Who's going to pay? The report's concept puts the corridor at approximately 7,000 kilometres in length and up to five kilometres wide. It would follow the boreal forest in the northern part of the west, moving northwest along the Mackenzie Valley, southeast from the Churchill, Man., area to northern Ontario and across northern Quebec to Labrador.Ideally, Fellows said a route would be established that's agreeable to "as many parties as we can, so that we have a good idea of where this type of infrastructure should be going."The report estimates that, if fully built, the corridor would cost $100 billion.Fellows says that wouldn't fall on one party though — noting that infrastructure like roads could fall to municipal, territorial or federal governments. Once the groundwork is in place, he expects that proponents for things like rails and pipelines will come forward with their chequebooks."There's a lot more scope for trade-offs that can make everyone better off," Fellows said."You've seen a lot of talk about individual projects here and there, and they end up sort of scattered as a spider web over different parts of the North," he said."By coordinating these and putting them into single right-of ways we can really improve the advantage there in terms of both facilitating this type of construction and also making sure it happens where it should be happening."
Sanders discusses next steps with Obama after Democratic primaries-[By Roberta Rampton]-June 9, 2016-YAHOONEWS
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders returned to Washington for high-level talks on Thursday, including a meeting with President Barack Obama, as Democrats pressured him to end his presidential campaign and support Hillary Clinton after a hard-fought primary race.Clinton, the former secretary of state, won enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination this week and become the first woman to lead a major U.S. party as its presidential nominee.Despite her commanding victories in California and New Jersey in presidential contests on Tuesday, Sanders vowed to carry his populist campaign to the Democratic National Convention in July, when the party's nominee is formally chosen.Obama, who is expected to endorse Clinton soon, welcomed Sanders to the White House, chatting and chuckling as they walked into the Oval Office. Sanders will meet with Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, in the afternoon. The Sanders campaign, which waged an unexpectedly strong challenge to a better-known and better-funded Democrat, has decried what it called Clinton's anointment by the party establishment and the media.Obama said in an NBC interview pre-taped on Wednesday that he hoped divisions between Democrats would start to heal in coming weeks now that Clinton has clinched the party's nomination for the Nov. 8 presidential election."It was a healthy thing for the Democratic Party to have a contested primary," Obama said at a fund-raiser in New York City later on Wednesday-Senior Democrats are seeking a delicate balance between the need to unite behind Clinton in the looming battle against Republican candidate Donald Trump and not alienating Sanders and his supporters.U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, like Sanders a progressive and fiery critic of Wall Street, is preparing to endorse Clinton in the coming weeks after staying neutral in the Democratic primary, people familiar with her thinking told Reuters.Republicans, meanwhile, are grappling with controversy over-Trump's attacks on Mexican-American U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing fraud lawsuits against the billionaire's defunct real estate training school.Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich told reporters on Thursday that Trump's comments were "fine." But he suggested Trump change tactics toward making more measured remarks as he did in a speech after primary elections this week."I think he has to continue what he did Tuesday night with the specific speeches aimed at big topics drawing a clear distinction between where he is and where Hillary is," Gingrich said."I think if he does that, the odds are very high he's going to win."Both Clinton and Trump have begun to take clear steps toward the general election, planning events in key swing states. Each will hold rallies in Pennsylvania and Ohio early next week, with Trump also campaigning in Florida this weekend.(Reporting by Emily Stephenson; Writing by Doina Chiacu and Megan Cassella; Editing by Bill Trott and Alistair Bell)

Supermassive black hole spotted devouring surprising meal-[CBC]-June 8, 2016-YAHOONEWS
Scientists have directly observed a supermassive black hole feeding for the first time — and they learned it isn't eating the kind of meal that they had assumed. The supermassive black hole at the centre of the Abell 2497 Brightest Cluster Galaxy doesn't appear to favour hot meals as previously expected. Instead, it's dining on very cold clouds of molecular hydrogen, with dashes of carbon monoxide and other "impurities" thrown in, reports a new study published today in the journal Nature by an international team of scientists, including several Canadians."It's surprising, because this gas is very, very cold and very, very clumpy," Grant Tremblay, lead author of the study, told CBC News."State of the art theory and simulation always assume that the black hole feeds from a smooth, spherical inflow of very, very hot plasma … and our observations are totally inconsistent with this."That means astrophysicists may need to revise their theories about how black holes interact with the massive galaxies that surround them, and their theories about how such massive galaxies evolve, added Tremblay, who is an Einstein Fellow at Yale University.-Enormous galaxy-Abell 2497 Brightest Cluster Galaxy is the biggest galaxy in a huge cluster of up to 100 galaxies located about 1.2 billion light years away."It is an absolutely enormous galaxy," Tremblay said. "It's about 300,000 light years across." That's about three times wider than our own Milky Way galaxy.Abell 2497 is located in a place in the night sky that would be visible from Canada, but is so far away that it can only be seen with powerful telescopes, even though it is extremely bright.University of Manitoba astrophysicists Christopher O'Dea and Stefi Baum, Tremblay's former PhD supervisors and co-authors of the new paper, first reported hints of hydrogen gas clouds falling into the black hole at the centre of Abell 2497 in 1994.Tremblay and a group of collaborators recently made new observations of the galaxy and its black hole with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope in Chile.'Big, bright light bulb'-The telescope is designed to see radio waves. The brightest source of radio waves in Abell 2497 is the black hole itself, which generates an intense magnetic field. The electrons spiralling around that magnetic field generate huge quantities of radio waves visible to ALMA."What we see is a big, bright light bulb," Tremblay said. While Abell 2497 and its galaxy cluster sit in a giant ball of hot gas millions of light years across, near the centre of the galaxy are patches of gas that have cooled down into cold, clumpy clouds.Tremblay said ALMA is also very sensitive to radio waves from cold, molecular gases. It can't actually see hydrogen, which makes up the bulk of the cold clouds scattered through the centre of a galaxy, but it can see carbon monoxide, an "impurity" whose presence indicates that the gas clouds are very cold — less than -129 C.The carbon monoxide in the clouds cast characteristic "shadows" of certain colours in the presence of the bright light from the black hole, allowing the carbon monoxide to be detected, Tremblay said.A physics phenomenon called the Doppler effect means those colours shift relative to the normal colour of carbon monoxide shadows depending on whether the clouds are moving toward or away from you. It's very similar to the way the pitch of an ambulance siren gets higher or lower depending on whether the ambulance is moving toward or away from you.The shift in colours indicate that the clumps of carbon monoxide are moving toward the black hole and away from Earth at about 300 kilometres per second.O'Dea said those colour shifts are "the definite proof that something is falling into the black hole."Tremblay agreed that the observations show the gas "will eventually become fuel for the black hole within a very short period of time, if not almost immediately. The black hole will ultimately consume this gas, without a doubt."Tremblay said the researchers have calculated that there are enough cold gas clouds in the galaxy that the black hole can be fuelled with nothing but cold gas.-No evidence of hot meals-Meanwhile, no one has ever observed a black hole consuming hot gas, despite all the theories that they do, O'Dea said. He suggested that the hot gas theory was preferred because it was mathematically simpler to calculate and simulate what was going on with hot gas than cold gas."The infall of cold gas is very messy — it's lumpy, it comes in asymmetrically, you have to dissipate energy," he said.On the other hand, he added, astrophysicists have long known that cold gas clouds existed near black holes."We see it in the nuclei of galaxies, we see the cold gas forming stars. It's sort of been there all along, and now we just now are realizing that it's falling into the black hole and providing the energy for the activity that we see."
