SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — A Russian passenger airliner crashed Saturday in a remote mountainous part of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula 23 minutes after taking off from a popular Red Sea resort, killing all 224 people on board, including 25 children.The cause of the crash was not known, but two major European airlines announced they would stop flying over the area for safety reasons after a local affiliate of the extremist Islamic State group claimed it "brought down" the aircraft. Russia's transport minister dismissed that claim as not credible.Almost everyone on board the Airbus-A321-200 operated by the Moscow-based Metrojet airline was Russian; Ukraine said four of its citizens were passengers. Russian officials did not give a specific breakdown of the 217 passengers' ages and genders, but said 25 were children. There were seven crew members.A civil aviation ministry statement said the plane's wreckage was found in the Hassana area some 70 kilometers (44 miles) south of the city of el-Arish, in the general area of northern Sinai where Egyptian security forces have for years battled local Islamic militants who in recent months claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.The ministry said the plane took off from the resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh shortly before 6 a.m. for St. Petersburg in Russia and disappeared from radar screens 23 minutes after takeoff. Some left the room occasionally, looking drawn with tear-stained faces.Yulia Zaitseva was one of them. She said her friends, newlyweds Elena Rodina and Alexander Krotov, were on the flight. Both were 33. Zaitseva said Rodina, her friend for 20 years, "really wanted to go to Egypt, though I told her, 'Why the hell do you want to go to Egypt?'""She was a very good friend who was ready to give everything to other people. To lose such a friend is like having your hand cut off," Zaitseva said, adding that Rodina's parents feel "like their lives are over."Russian airlines became infamous for poor safety in the early years following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, which caused severe financial troubles and regulatory disorder. Chilling footage appears to show the Airbus A-321 jet as it falls through the air, before it seems to explode and engulfs into a ball of smoke and flames.ISIS jihadis insist they took down the airliner, but on Saturday it was claimed that its co-pilot had complained to family that the aircraft's condition "left much to be desired" shortly before the doomed flight took off. Russian aviation officials say the plane "broke up in the air" - but it was too early to say why.Meanwhile, Terror Monitor, an online terrorist monitoring organisation, said it had received a statement from Islamic State militants claiming responsibility for the attack.The group, which watches terrorist groups around the world, tweeted an image of the Arabic statement and wrote: "#IslamicState (#ISIS) terror group claims downing of Russian aircraft in #Sinai."The unverified statement, written in Arabic, says the flight crash was NOT a technical fault, as reported by security sources.It goes on to say that the attack was "in response to Russian airstrikes that killed hundreds of Muslims on Syrian land". German company Lufthansa, Air France, Emirates, flyDubai and Air Arabia have all said they will actively blacklist the area until a clear explanation is provided of what caused the crash.A spokesman for the Lufthansa said: "We took the decision to avoid the area because the situation and the reasons for the crash were not clear." It is a small airline and it is difficult to know who the operator was as there are multiple. It looks as if the airline flies only domestic routes in Russia but does go down to Turkey and Egypt."The plane operator Kogalymavia is also known as MetroJet.

President Vladimir Putin declared Sunday a national day of mourning.Russian news agencies reported that a first Il-76 Emergency Situations Ministry plane flew into St Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport a little before 6 a.m. local time, carrying 144 bodies.The ministry said the next plane carrying bodies would leave Cairo on Monday evening for St Petersburg. On arrival, the first bodies were loaded onto stretchers and carried into a large white lorry waiting on the runway at Pulkovo Airport.A Reuters photographer then saw the white lorry leaving the airport, escorted by police cars. It was heading for a St Petersburg morgue, where the bodies were to be identified.The identification process was meant to start around 11 a.m. local time.At Pulkovo Airport on Sunday, grieving Russians piled flowers high in memory of their dead compatriots. IDF soldiers on Sunday shot dead a Palestinian who lunged at them with a knife near Hebron, the army said in a statement.The soldiers were not injured in the attempted attack, which took place near the West Bank Palestinian village of Beit Anun, north of the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba.The army said the incident occurred during a “violent riot” in the area.According to police, the attacker was a 29-year-old resident of Beit Anun.The thwarted attack came a day after a Palestinian armed with a knife tried to stab Israeli guards at the Gilboa/Jalama crossing near the West Bank city of Jenin on Saturday morning, and was shot dead. We’d much rather not send our children to the front lines to protect us for generation after generation. We feel, many of us, that there is more we could do to help begin to create a climate in which peacemaking is less risky, to help begin the lengthy process of reconciliation and tolerance that, maybe, one day, could enable us to peacefully share this bloodied land. But unlike well-intentioned American leaders of past and present, we do not have the luxury of blinding ourselves to the consequences of taking ill-judged and premature risks in that supreme cause of peace-making.For all your despicable false accusations against us, your advanced years, and your weakness, you, President Abbas, still have more power than most anybody else to help advance the gradual process of moderation that is crucial to realizing your own people’s aspiration for statehood. You are best placed to tell your people that the Jews have legitimacy here too. That the disputed land must be shared. That Jerusalem is holy to all monotheistic religions. That despite your rhetorical attempted land grab, the Old City — where Al-Aqsa sits, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher sits, and the Temple Mount and Western Wall sit — is not yours and yours alone.They won’t like to hear it. Fed a relentless diet of lies for generations, they won’t easily believe it. They won’t like you for telling them. But that’s sometimes what leadership is about — taking your constituents, even against their will, in a better direction for their own best interests.You should tell your people the inconvenient truth about the Jews and their history in these parts. Far from encouraging them to stab us, you should tell them that the sooner they stop, the sooner we can start the long process of building trust — the necessary prerequisite to compromise and Palestinian independence. WASHINGTON (AP) — Searchers using high-tech sonars have discovered the deep-water wreckage of a vessel believed to be the cargo ship El Faro, which went missing Oct. 1 with 33 crewmembers during Hurricane Joaquin, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said late Saturday.The federal agency said the wreckage is some 15,000 feet (4,572 meters) below the water's surface and its identity still must be confirmed by sending down a remotely operated deep ocean vehicle.The federal agency's statement added that experts aboard a specially equipped Navy vessel reported they located the wreckage at 1:36 p.m. EDT (1736 GMT) Saturday deep underwater in the area of the ship's last known position. The wreckage was detected on the fifth of 13 surveying passes by that ship, USNS Apache.The 790-foot (240-meter) El Faro was reported missing east of the Bahamas, according to the Coast Guard.The NTSB said investigators will now seek to survey the debris and confirm the identity of the wreckage, adding that effort could begin as early as Sunday. It added that the wreckage spotted in the depths is "consistent with a 790-foot cargo ship, which from sonar images appears to be in an upright position and in one piece.""To confirm the finding, specialists on Apache will use CURV 21, a deep ocean remotely operated vehicle to survey and confirm the identity of the wreckage. This survey could begin as early as November 1," said the statement emailed by Peter Knudson of the agency's public affairs office in Washington.The El Faro's captain had called in before the vessel disappeared saying the ship had lost its engine power during its voyage from Jacksonville to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The captain, Michael Davidson, said the ship was listing, and taking on water.The Coast Guard had searched for the ship for days after El Faro disappeared in the storm, finding debris and one body in a survival suit.The El Faro was scheduled for retirement from Caribbean duty and for new retrofitting for service between the West Coast and Alaska, company officials have said. Both the El Faro and its sister ship were slated to be replaced by two new ships. Aboard when it disappeared were five engineers from Poland, who were working on the retrofitting as the ship sailed to Puerto Rico.NTSB investigators have said Davidson intended to pass 65 miles (105 kilometers) from the center of the storm. Independent maritime experts have said that such a decision would be risky.The NTSB, an independent federal agency, is conducting an investigation into the cargo ship's disappearance. It said it had contracted for a search vessel with the U.S. Navy to help locate the missing ship, document the wreckage and debris field, and if possible, recover the crucial voyage data recorder.Investigators have said they hope to recover that recorder, a ship's "black box," in an effort to understand more about what had happened.The statement said the Navy search ship departed from Virginia on Oct. 19 after being fitted with state-of-the-art underwater detection equipment, arriving at the cargo ship's last known position Oct. 23.The statement added that search experts aboard the Apache first towed a special device called a towed pinger locator in the water, slowly sweeping around the ship's last known position in hopes of picking up sounds of the pinger from El Faro's voyage data recorder. According to the statement, three days of searching yielded no pinger signal and that piece of equipment was withdrawn and a side-scanning sonar system, called Orion, was then deployed.The NTSB said the specialized sonar technology creates sonar images as it sweeps the waters, seeking patterns that provide clues to a missing vessel.Knudson's statement said that if the wreckage detected is confirmed to be the missing cargo ship, attempts will be made to locate and recover the critical voyage data recorder. It added that the coming phase of operations is expected to take up to 15 days to complete in ideal conditions, longer depending on weather or other conditions encountered.

Syria Kurdish-Arab alliance launches first anti-IS attack: spokesman-AFP-nov 1,15-yahoonews

Beirut (AFP) - A coalition of US-backed Kurdish militia and rebel groups has launched its first operation against territory controlled by the Islamic State jihadist group in northeast Syria, a spokesman said Saturday.The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were formed in mid-October as an alliance between the powerful Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and other Syrian rebel groups."This is the first step of the Syrian Democratic Forces," said Sherfan Darwish, spokesman for the Burkan al-Furat Arab rebel group, which is part of the SDF.Speaking to AFP by phone from Syria, Darwish said the operation began on Friday night and would target IS-held areas in the northeast province of Hasakeh, including the towns of Shadadi and Al-Hol.Darwish said the operation would receive air support from the US-led coalition striking IS in Syria since September 2014.In a statement on its Facebook page the coalition later said that it had targeted IS tactical units and fighting posts outside Al-Hol on Friday.In a video statement published online, the YPG confirmed the beginning of the operation "with all of the members of the SDF, and with support from and coordination with the international coalition, to liberate the southern parts of Hasakeh province".Clashes on Saturday raged between the SDF and IS outside Al-Hol and Al-Ghazayleh, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.Both of those areas lie northeast of Hasakeh city in a thin slice of Syrian territory between the Turkish and Iraqi borders.Abdel Rahman said the SDF were backed on Saturday by air strikes from the US-led air coalition.Most of Hasakeh province is divided in control between Kurdish forces and IS jihadists, although regime forces are present in some provincial cities including the capital.In June, IS seized several neighbourhoods in Hasakeh city but was expelled a month later after battles involving both regime troops and Kurdish fighters.The SDF announcement came a day after the White House said it would send "fewer than 50" special forces personnel to Syria's north, reversing a long-standing refusal to put US boots on the ground.

ISMAILIA, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - A Russian airliner carrying 224 passengers crashed into a mountainous area of Egypt's Sinai peninsula on Saturday shortly after losing radar contact near cruising altitude, killing all aboard.A militant group affiliated to Islamic State in Egypt, Sinai Province, said in a statement it had brought down the plane "in response to Russian airstrikes that killed hundreds of Muslims on Syrian land", but Russia's Transport Minister told Interfax news agency the claim "can't be considered accurate".The Airbus A321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia under the brand name Metrojet, was flying from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg in Russia when it went down in central Sinai soon after daybreak, the aviation ministry said."I now see a tragic scene," an Egyptian security officer at the site told Reuters by telephone. "A lot of dead on the ground and many who died whilst strapped to their seats."The plane split into two, a small part on the tail end that burned and a larger part that crashed into a rockface. We have extracted at least 100 bodies and the rest are still inside," the officer, who requested anonymity, said.Both black boxes of the plane had been found, Mohamed Hossam Kemal, the civil aviation minister, told a news conference.Kemal said communications between the plane and air traffic control before the crash had been normal and that nothing irregular had occurred before the accident."The plane did not request a change of route," he said.Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail also told the news conference that there did not appear to be any unusual activity behind the crash but the facts would not be clear until further investigations had been carried out.Ismail said 129 bodies had so far been removed and the chances of finding survivors were now near-impossible.Bodies were being transported to various hospitals with 34 arriving in the Zeinhom morgue in Cairo early in the evening.Islamic State, in a statement on Twitter, said it had brought down the aircraft.Sinai is the scene of an insurgency by militants close to Islamic State, who have killed hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police and have also attacked Western targets in recent months. The man said the rest of the family had already returned from a holiday in Egypt, but his wife had opted to stay on, which is why she was on the Saturday morning flight.The A321 is a medium-haul jet in service since 1994, with over 1,100 in operation worldwide and a good safety record. It is a highly automated aircraft relying on computers to help pilots stay within safe flying limits.Airbus said the A321 was built in 1997 and had been operated by Metrojet since 2012. It had flown 56,000 hours in nearly 21,000 flights and was powered by engines from International Aero Engines consortium, which includes United Technologies unit Pratt & Whitney and Germany's MTU Aero Engines .Emergency services and aviation specialists searched the wreckage for any clues to the crash. All 224 people on board died.The cause of the crash was not yet known.
