The FBI is investigating a string of hacks that defaced US websites with imagery from the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group, NBC News reported on Monday.Websites including a race car speedway in the state of Ohio, a Goodwill center in Missouri and a church in Canada, were defaced with the radical terrorist group's black flag, the news organization reported, as cited by AFP.Attacks against similar low-profile websites were also recorded in Montana, New York, Massachusetts and Minnesota.The FBI said it was aware of the incidents and "is contacting the impacted parties." As many as 10,000 Europeans could be waging jihad in Iraq and Syria by the end of this year, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned Sunday, a three-fold increase on current numbers."There are 3,000 Europeans in Iraq and Syria today. When you do a projection for the months to come, there could be 5,000 before summer and 10,000 before the end of the year," Valls told French television channel iTele."Do you realize the threat that this represents?" he asked.He said there were around 1,400 people who were either already in these conflict zones, who had come back from there or who were planning to go."There have already been nearly 90 French people who have died out there with a weapon in their hand, fighting against our own values," Valls said.France, along with Belgium, has seen the largest numbers of volunteers leaving to join the Islamic State jihadist group, which has seized large parts of Syria and Iraq.Last month, France seized passports from six of its citizens and banned 40 more from traveling abroad after they were allegedly planning to travel to Syria and Iraq.It was the first time the measure had been used in France following its introduction as part of a raft of new counter-terrorism laws in November."We have to face a particularly high threat level in France, in Europe and in other countries," said Valls.AFP contributed to this report.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon called on the international community Sunday to halt the destruction by Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists of Iraqi archaeological sites, branding the smashing of priceless and ancient artifacts a "war crime."Ban's comments came hours after Iraq's tourism and antiquities minister called on the US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against the terrorists, to try to protect the sites, stating: "We request aerial support," reports AFP.The jihadists caused outrage around the world when they bulldozed the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud and smashed artifacts in the Mosul museum.They may now have turned their attention to the extremely well preserved fortress city Hatra, which is more than 2,000 years old and a UNESCO world heritage site, with the United Nations condemning its reported "destruction.""The secretary-general urgently calls on the international community to swiftly put a stop to such heinous terrorist activity and to counter the illicit traffic in cultural artifacts," Ban said in a statement from his spokesman."The deliberate destruction of our common cultural heritage constitutes a war crime."He stressed that the perpetrators must be held to account, and said he was "outraged" by the destruction, citing the Hatra reports.The UN chief echoed a call by Iraq's tourism and antiquities minister, Adel Fahad al-Shershab earlier Sunday."The sky is not in the hands of the Iraqis, the sky is not in our hands. KUALA LUMPUR: Emotional families marked the first anniversary of the disappearance of flight MH370 on Sunday (Mar 8) as a new report said the battery on its black box locator beacon had expired, but shed no new light on the cause of the disaster.Prime Minister Najib Razak said his nation remained committed to the search for the Malaysia Airlines jet, believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, and was hopeful it would be found.Next of kin, many of whom have criticised Malaysia's handling of the disaster, held ceremonies in Kuala Lumpur and Beijing to remember the missing and urged authorities to never abandon the expensive and arduous search."The only answer I want is where is the plane, then only will we know," said Jacquita Gonzales, wife of the flight's cabin crew supervisor Patrick Gomes. "The whole world has heard what he (Najib) has said, so they can't go back on their word."A report by an international investigative team released Sunday raised no red flags relating to the crew or the aircraft's condition to indicate any cause for the disappearance. But it said the 30-day battery powering the underwater locator beacon on the flight data recorder was due to expire in December 2012.Although the battery on the plane's cockpit voice recorder was up-to-date, this could have contributed to the failure to find the plane, said Gerry Soejatman, a Jakarta-based aviation consultant."My major worry is that (search vessels) may have gone over the aircraft but not heard the pings because of this," said Soejatman, who added that the report otherwise largely restated what is already known about MH370.A year-long hunt in the deep ocean far off Australia's west coast, where satellite data indicate the Boeing 777 crashed, has yielded nothing yet."Together with our international partners, we have followed the little evidence that exists," Najib said in a statement. PRAHLAD: The entire world needs to know what happened to that flight as the safety of millions of people is at stake.PUNE: Prahlad Shirsath vividly remembers this day last year. He was in North Korea and his wife Kranti was living with their sons in Pune, India. She spoke to him from India and told him she was ready to travel alone to meet him.She spoke about their sons and described flowers growing in their backyard too. Then, she left to travel thousands of kilometres to meet and spend time with her husband.A year later, Prahlad is still hoping to be reunited with his wife Kranti. And, this time he has made the journey back to India."I was slated to leave North Korea and come back to Pune so Kranti decided to come to spend a few days there before I came back," Prahlad reminisced. He even spoke to her just as she got on board the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight. It was midnight in Korea and she asked him to sleep well.Next morning when Prahlad woke up, he thought the plane was delayed. Only later did the news break that MH370 was missing. He collapsed hearing it."I remember calling the embassy and several friends. Since there was no flight to Beijing from North Korea that day, I travelled by road. In Beijing, a few friends were waiting for me. Malaysia Airlines did everything to make me and other relatives of passengers comfortable but it meant nothing to us," he said.After getting no concrete response in Beijing, Prahlad travelled to Kuala Lumpur. "Even in KL I got no answers, so I decided to come back to India to be with my children," he said.A year later, he said he knows exactly the same information that was given to him in the first few days. "How can a whole Boeing disappear with no trace? There has to be an explanation."For Prahlad, life has moved in fast motion. He has now moved back to India to be with his sons and stays home looking after them."I am surviving on my savings. I cook, clean and do most of the house work. Hopefully soon I will be able to go out and work. I still pray for my wife. I ask God for answers. But I don't beg him. I am hopeful." As MH370's disappearance completes one year, Prahlad wants the truth no matter how hard it is."We want the truth, but we want evidence for it. He says what aggravated his grief is the way Malaysia Airlines and the Malaysian government have handled the situation.According to him, there has been a lack of support, information and co-operation. Jiang represents all Chinese family members, and has flown to Malaysia three times in the past 12 months to speak on their behalf. But so far, he has been unable to get any clarity from Malaysia Airlines (MAS)."Whoever we approached put the blame on others and shirked responsibility,” said Jiang. “Malaysia Airlines blamed Civil Aviation. The Transport Ministry blamed Malaysia Airlines. No one listens to anyone else. We spent our first night at the airport terminal hall. The second night was spent sleeping by the roadside outside the Airline headquarters."Jiang and other relatives have also taken MAS to task for calling the US$50,000 given to families 'compensation". The money was meant to help defray their travelling expenses. If we are slightly emotional, they will accuse us of having a poor attitude and will threaten to cease all communication with us."Families have released an official statement questioning the airline's suggestion that they should accept that their loved ones are dead. SYDNEY – A year on from the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, an extraordinary amount of key data remains unknown - fuelling conspiracy theories and heated online debate about one of aviation's biggest mysteries.An information vacuum has nourished a cottage industry of experts and amateurs in cyberspace who continue to exhaustively pick the case apart in a bid to find out just what happened to the plane and its 239 passengers and crew.The resulting theories range from the wild - alien abduction, MH370 and its doomed fleetmate MH17 were the same plane - to sober, science-based arguments that the plane is in the southern Indian Ocean, but not necessarily in the current search area.What they all agree on is that some key pieces of the puzzle are missing."It's amazing how much information we don't have after looking at this case for all this time," said Jeff Wise, an aviation expert whose recently published Kindle book 'The Plane That Wasn't There' reached No.1 on Amazon's bestseller lists.The Boeing 777 lost contact with air traffic control shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, bound for Beijing, early on March 8, 2014, as it flew across the Gulf of Thailand close to a navigational waypoint called Igari.Just about everything that happened thereafter is hotly debated.Malaysia's air force said its radar tracked the plane as it turned back, re-crossed the Malay Peninsula and flew out of range off the northwest coast.Official investigators used analysis from British firm Inmarsat of "pings" to its satellite from MH370 to plot two vast arcs - one to the north and one to the south - across which it may have flown. Combining those faint pings with data from the plane, they concluded it had turned south and flown for hours before crashing into the southern Indian Ocean.That conclusion has been challenged by aviation bloggers and freelance investigators, who have questioned key radar plots and assumptions about the speed and fuel burn of the jet.Lending credence to some of the sceptics, Tim Clark, head of Emirates Airlines, said last November he believed information was being withheld and questioned the Malaysian military's assertion that it took no action because it identified MH370 as "friendly" when it suddenly reversed course.The Malaysian government, which is due to release an interim report on the investigation before the March 8 anniversary, has always denied withholding information and said its position was unchanged.

New York-based Wise, like many others, confessed to becoming somewhat obsessed, even buying additional satellite data in an attempt to confirm his theory the plane flew north along national borders to avoid radar before landing in Kazakhstan.Another independent investigator, retired legal investigator John Fiorentino, whose early challenges to reports of sightings of wreckage in the Indian Ocean were taken up by families' group Voice370, has pressed on despite ill-health.That level of devotion has led to bad blood between supporters of rival theories.The Independent Group (IG), comprised of around a dozen satellite, data, maths and aviation experts, expelled Wise this week following articles linked to his book."It's a bunch of garbage," said New Zealand-based IG member Duncan Steel.Wise, a former pilot, has himself banned anybody who uses the word "lightning" from his website. Fiorentino has been blocked from several blogs for, he says, questioning theories.And those theories run the gamut.Alongside Wise's Russian theory is the suggestion by the boss of former French regional airline Proteus, Marc Dugain, that the plane flew towards the U.S. Navy base at Diego Garcia and was shot down.

"Despite extensive efforts we still have no idea why MH370 went silent at Igari, or where the plane is now.

Want to gain entry to your office, get on a bus, or perhaps buy a sandwich? We're all getting used to swiping a card to do all these things. But at Epicenter, a new hi-tech office block in Sweden, they are trying a different approach - a chip under the skin.Felicio de Costa, whose company is one of the tenants, arrives at the front door and holds his hand against it to gain entry. Inside he does the same thing to get into the office space he rents, and he can also wave his hand to operate the photocopier.That's all because he has a tiny RFID (radio-frequency identification) chip, about the size of a grain of rice, implanted in his hand. Soon, others among the 700 people expected to occupy the complex will also be offered the chance to be chipped. Along with access to doors and photocopiers, they're promised further services in the longer run, including the ability to pay in the cafe with a touch of a hand.On the day of the building's official opening, the developer's chief executive was, himself, chipped live on stage. And I decided that if was to get to grips with this technology, I had to bite the bullet - and get chipped too.The whole process is being organised by a Swedish bio-hacking group which was profiled by my colleague Jane Wakefield recently. One of its members, a rather fearsome looking tattooist, inserted my chip.First, he massaged the skin between my thumb and index finger and rubbed in some disinfectant. The he told me to take a deep breath while he inserted the chip. There was a moment of pain - not much worse than any injection - and then he stuck a plaster over my hand.Before trying my chip out, I wanted to know more about the thinking behind it. Hannes Sjoblad, whose electronic business card is on his own chip and can be accessed with a swipe of a smartphone, has the title chief disruption officer at the development. I asked him whether people really wanted to get this intimate with technology."We already interact with technology all the time," he told me. An older woman was more positive about the potential of the technology but saw little point in being chipped just to get through a door.But Hannes Sjoblad says he and the Swedish Biohacking Group have another objective - preparing us all for the day when others want to chip us. "We want to be able to understand this technology before big corporates and big government come to us and say everyone should get chipped - the tax authority chip, the Google or Facebook chip." Using short-range radio frequency identification (RFID) signals, it can transmit your identity as you pass through a security checkpoint or walk into a football stadium. It can help you buy groceries at Wal-Mart. In a worst-case scenario – if you are kidnapped in a foreign country, for example – it could save your life.Microchip implants like the ones pet owners use to track their dogs and cats could become commonplace in humans in the next decade. Experts are divided on whether they’re appropriate for people, but the implants could offer several advantages. For soldiers and journalists in war zones, an implant could be the difference between life and death. A tracker could also help law enforcement quickly locate a kidnapped child.“In the long run, chip implants could make it less intrusive than some emerging ID systems which rely on physical biometrics (like your fingerprints or unique eye pattern),” says Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, author of the book “Distraction Addiction” and visiting scholar at Stanford's University’s Peace Innovation Lab.“This should be a matter of individual choice, but fighting crime should be much easier using chips,” adds sci-fi author Larry Niven, who predicted chip implants in the ’70s. Niven said he supports chip implantation for security reasons, provided it is an opt-in measure.Ramez Naam, who led the early development of Microsoft software projects and is now a popular speaker and author, said he envisions using chip implantation to help monitor the location of people with Alzheimer's disease.They could be used to track the activities of felons who have been released from prison.Chips are being used today to manage farm animals. Farmers can track sheep, pigs and horses as they move through a gate, weigh them instantly and make sure they are eating properly.“Those same chips have found their way into RFID devices to activate the gas pump from a key ring and for anti-theft devices in cars,” said Stu Lipoff, an electrical engineer and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers spokesman.“There have been people who volunteered to use them for opening the door of an apartment as a personalized ID using your arm. It could be used to track criminals targeted for patrol who might wander into a restricted area.”

Possible uses in the future

Implants are normally useful only at short ranges – as you walk through a portal or close to a transponder. So using chip implants to track people would require an infrastructure of transponders scattered around a city that read their identity in public buildings and street corners, Lipoff said.But consider the possibilities: People could unlock their homes or cars, gain access to a building, pass through an airport and even unlock their laptops without using a phone or watch. A pin code could be used to activate the chip – or to deactivate it to maintain privacy.They are easy to install and remove, and, because they are implanted under the skin, they are unobtrusive. The chips, which could be the size of a thumbnail, could be injected into an arm or a hand.If children were chipped, teachers could take attendance in the classroom. Lipoff said that GPS would not work because skin would block the signal, although new Near Field Communication chips like those in current smartphones could work because of their low-power requirement. However, no-one has yet tried to implant NFC chips.Police could track cars and read data without needing to scan license plates. At a hospital, administrators could locate a doctor without having to rely on a pager. And if you walked into a donut shop, the owner could read your taste preferences (glazed or not glazed) without needing a loyalty card.

But is it ethical?

Like any tech advancement, there are downsides. Concerns about the wrong people accessing personal information and tracking you via the chips have swirled since the FDA approved the first implantable microchip in 2004.Naam and Pang both cited potential abuses, from hacking into the infrastructure and stealing your identity to invading your privacy and knowing your driving habits. There are questions about how long a felon would have to use a tracking implant. And, an implant, which has to be small and not use battery power -- might not be as secure as a heavily encrypted smartphone.Troy Dunn, who attempts to locate missing persons on his TNT show “APB with Troy Dunn,” said a chip implant would make his job easier, but he is strongly against the practice for most people. “I only support GPS chip monitoring for convicted felons while in prison and on parole; for sex offenders forever; and for children if parents opt in,” he says. “I am adamantly against the chipping of anyone else.”Using chip implants to locate abducted children could actually have the opposite effect. Pang says a microchip would make a missing person easier to rescue, but “Kidnappers want ransoms, not dead bodies. The most dangerous time for victims is during rescue attempts or when the kidnappers think the police are closing in.”And beyond the obvious privacy issues, there’s something strange about injecting a chip in your body, Lipoff says. Yet pacemakers and other embedded devices are commonly used today. “People might find it a bit unsavory, but if it is not used to track you, and apart from the privacy issues, there are many interesting applications,” he says.At least it’s better than having a barcode stitched onto our foreheads.

What is the implant?

The implants are 12-millimetre cylindrical tags, slightly larger than a grain of rice. Encased in glass, they have no battery and are inert until brought into proximity with Radio-frequency identification (RFID) or Near Field Communication (NFC) reader devices.

What is RFID technology?

Radio-frequency identification is based on wireless use of electromagnetic fields to transfer data. It allows for automatic identification, storage of information and security passes.

What does it do?

With a wave of the hand, implants can be used to unlock doors or phones, log into computers, start vehicles and turn on lights. You can also share contact details, videos, Facebook pages and more with friends by letting them scan your implant.

How is it installed?

The ideal location is the webbing between thumb and index finger. Tags are small enough to be installed by a professional body piercer using a piercing needle, just like they would a piece of large-gauge body jewellery.

Are there risks?

Infection is the most common risk, followed by rejection of the tag.

Is it painful?

He explained that BBVA is currently developing a cloud-based wallet app, having an American banking startup last year and also having partnered with an online payment company called Dwolla. He said that while his company only has 3000 of its 110,000 staff currently working on digital projects, he believes in five years’ time the majority of BBVA staff will be working in that area, and he expressed optimism that the availability of non-traditional routes to getting bank accounts could present opportunities to attract more customers.The traditional banking industry is facing a number of challenges from the digital revolution. For one thing, commerce is going digital and consumers are starting to embrace the convenience of mobile payment platforms like Apple Pay and its forthcoming rivals. This is interesting for us because we’ve always talked about card present transactions so we know if the card is there when the transaction’s happening. This is the first device that we believe that actually guarantees cardholder presence.”Mobile ID World readers will be familiar with the Nymi biometric wristband. The wearable device authenticates a user based on her unique EKG reading and keeps her authenticated for the entire time it’s worn and has an immense number of applications in the relation to smart homes, connected cars, Internet of Things and mCommerce. In November at Money 20/20 in Las Vegas, Nymi announced that it is piloting a contactless payment feature with financial partners that include RBC.“You physically have to be present, living and breathing for this to work and for this to pay,” said Bornstein. “We think this is the evolution of payment. Much of the industry’s focus has been on mobile contactless technologies such as NFC for use in mobile payments, which requires greater ecosystem collaboration and levels of investment, but arguably greater returns for the ecosystem. Hardware and software-based approaches to conducting mobile contactless payments are suited to particular transactions and present different advantages and challenges to the ecosystem. In addition, software-based approaches are adding to the choices that consumers have to make mobile payments. MWC 2015: Nymi Called The Future of Payment-Peter Counter-March 5, 2015

Today during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Jeremy Borntein, head of payments innovation at Royal Bank of Canada, took the stage during a panel titled “Navigating The Mobile Contactless Payments Landscape” and proclaimed that biometric wearables are the future of mCommerce.“This one pictured is Nymi,” said Bornstein, showing a slide of the Nymi wristband, “a Toronto based company that’s created a biometric device that uses your heart to validate the individual. This is interesting for us because we’ve always talked about card present transactions so we know if the card is there when the transaction’s happening. This is the first device that we believe that actually guarantees cardholder presence.”Mobile ID World readers will be familiar with the Nymi biometric wristband. The wearable device authenticates a user based on her unique EKG reading and keeps her authenticated for the entire time it’s worn and has an immense number of applications in the relation to smart homes, connected cars, Internet of Things and mCommerce. In November at Money 20/20 in Las Vegas, Nymi announced that it is piloting a contactless payment feature with financial partners that include RBC.You physically have to be present, living and breathing for this to work and for this to pay,” said Bornstein. “We think this is the evolution of payment. It’s where the world is moving and we’re very excited to be supporting it.”Bornstein, in describing RBC’s enthusiasm for Nymi as a payment device, underlined the great benefits that biometric technology brings to mobile payments. A contactless card, when lost or stolen, can be used by someone other than the cardholder. Biometric authentication addresses this problem by locking the account with a biological identity factor. A compromised iPhone 6 or Galaxy S6 for instance, can’t be used by unauthorized persons to make a payment without the painstaking process of spoofing the fingerprint sensor.When Bornstein calls the Nymi the first device to actually guarantee cardholder presence it’s a major endorsement for the wearable, but it also stands as an important milestone in the biometric mobile payment paradigm.As of now, the dominant biometric security modality for payments is fingerprint recognition, and that is largely because companies like Apple and Samsung have managed to gain the support of powerful financial institutions and relying parties when it comes to the efficacy of their respective sensors. With Nymi being lauded as the future of mobile payments by a major Canadian bank, and given the persistent convenience and security offered by the wearable, end users will be able to confidently choose their heartbeats instead of PINs when they want to shop.By Peter Counter

MWC 2015: Day 2 – Accessibility and The Connected Globe-Peter Counter-March 3, 2015

Internet of Things, Smart Tech, Connectivity, Mobile EcosystemToday was day two of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, where Mobile ID World president Peter O’Neill is investigating the identity management industry presence.Facebook and Google both held presentations today, and the topic that had everyone talking was accessibility. Where as yesterday we were concerned with digital identity and the GSMA’s Mobile Connect platform we heard updates on the spread of connectivity from two of the biggest names on the Internet.Mark Zuckerberg, creator and CEO of Facebook, spoke about the new Internet.org initiative his company is leading (and which you may have seen ads for on TV by now). The concept is simple: bring connectivity to the underserved masses. According to Facebook, two thirds of the world population do not have Internet access and Internet.org exists to break down the barriers in connecting that majority of the world population.“We’re really serious about this,” said Zuckerberg. “We have these services that people love, that are drivers of data usage, and that people want to use. [People] want to get on the Internet to use them and we want to work this out so that it’s a profitable model for our partners.”The obstacles standing in the way of mass global connectivity are basic but extremely prohibitive. As much as the cost of connected devices has decreased dramatically, money is still a major issue in bringing the Internet to the rest of the world, and when it gets there the content should also be in the appropriate language.As we examined yesterday, the decrease in cost of handsets has allowed for a strong platform of digital identity to emerge. Continuing to attack cost barriers, in the end, will lead to higher adoption rates of these necessary connective technologies. We can see this in vertical markets like physical access control and it stands to follow that the consumer market will be much the same.As we are already seeing with the burgeoning Internet of Things, where connectivity goes a demand for strong authentication and digital identity is soon to follow.Facebook isn’t the only company endeavoring to spread connectivity. Google has been aiming to build a connected ecosystem with, well, our own real life ecosystem. Google’s Sundar Pichai took to a stage today at MWC to give an update on Project Balloon: an experimental project that has unmanned and connected dirigibles beaming Internet to the Earthbound masses.Project Balloon started four years ago as an idea and two years later Google launched its first floating connection point. Today, Pichai announced some major advances in the viability of the initiative.“We started our experiment about two years ago in New Zealand, and at the time we could barely keep the balloon up for five days,” said Pichai. “We were serving 3G speeds to antennas on the ground. We knew we had to keep the balloon up for three months for this to work. Today we are excited to announce that most of our balloons stay up for as long as six months – 200 days. Instead of 3G speeds we’ve made progress that we actually serve LTE speeds directly to mobile handsets on the ground.”Combined with other Google connectivity initiatives like Google Fiber, it seems like it is only a matter of time before connectivity options reach a critical mass and create a connected globe. In terms of mobile ID and strong authentication, nothing could be more encouraging. Morpho Becomes Sole Supplier of Slovak Republic’s Official Documentation-Posted on January 21, 2015

SafranMorpho (Safran) has announced that the Slovak Republic has granted the company a three-year contract to provide driver’s licences. This makes it the sole supplier of all of the country’s official identity documents, from passports to police ID cards.Speaking in a press release, Morpho’s General Manager of Business Unit Europe, Government Identity Solutions, Jacques van Zijp, praised the contract “as a sign of continued trust in our technologies, placing the production of all official ID documents in our hands.”For the state’s part, Ministry of the Interior Rudolf Hlavaty concurred: “Throughout our cooperation over the years we have built a shared understanding of technical requirements and evolutions, which is helping us to work together more effectively and provide better quality of products and services.”Morpho is, of course, a specialist in biometric technology, having won first place last year in the NIST MINEX test with its fingerprint matching technology, so it’s fitting that the company is so trusted in the case of issuing enhanced documentation for official government purposes. This kind of thing is really taking off in Europe due to EU regulations encouraging greater ease of migration between member states, and more advanced security measures; Ukraine has been in the news recently with its issuing of biometric passports, for example, and in the same vein Bulgaria has just begun to set up biometric screening at its airports.January 21, 2015 – by Alex Perala.
