A 17-year-old Palestinian from Ramallah was arrested late Wednesday night at HaParsa Junction, near Dolev in Binyamin, on suspicion of planning to stab a bus driver in Jerusalem.Police officers from Modi'in Illit patrolling in the area noticed the suspect and stopped him to search his bag, where they found a large knife and a screwdriver.After a brief interrogation, the boy admitted he intended to hitchhike to Jerusalem to stab a a bus driver. He was transferred to the Israel Security Agency (ISA or Shin Bet) for further questioning.In a similar incident Wednesday night, a Palestinian in his 20s was arrested and taken in for questioning, after police found a knife on his person.At the entrance to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron, Border Patrol forces stopped the young man who had aroused suspicions. Upon inspection they found a commando knife under his shirt.Upon noticing the man walking "suspiciously" near the holy site, a security source said: "We asked him to lift up his shirt when he was a few feet away. As soon as he did so, we saw a commando knife on his waist." When Border Patrol forces saw the knife on the body of the suspect, they cocked their weapons at him. The suspect panicked and threw the knife on the floor. Soldiers conducted a thorough search of his body, and eventually the suspect was arrested.Despite attempts to communicate while the suspect was on the ground, he had apparently drank alcohol shortly before and was unable to cooperate with law enforcement.The suspect was then brought to the Hevron police precinct for further interrogation."The forces showed vigilance, ending the incident quickly and professionally," said Amal Ghanam, acting company commander at the Cave of the Patriarchs. "Experience has taught us that in this area we must be alert and ready for any scenario at all times. There is no room for hesitation and no room for error.""We will continue to pursue our important mission: maintaining the safety and the lives of citizens and of worshipers at the Cave of the Patriarchs," Ghanam concluded.

Arab support for the jihadist Islamic State (also known as ISIS) is highest among Palestinian Arabs, according to a recent survey.A poll carried out by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Doha gauged opinion on the Arab street regarding the current US-led campaign to "rollback" and ultimately defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. 5,100 respondents from seven Arab countries (Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, "Palestine", as well as Syrian Arabs in Turkish refugee camps) were asked about their views both of the operation and of ISIS itself.The results showed that a full 85% of Arabs hold a view of ISIS that is either "Negative" or "Negative to some extent," whereas just 11% saw them as "Positive" or "Positive to some extent."Regarding the anti-ISIS campaign, despite the deep unpopularity of many of the Arab regimes taking part, a full 59% were supportive of Arab participation in the campaign. Several gulf states as well as Jordan have contributed towards the US-led air campaign.However, only 22% were fully confident that the mission would succeed, while a mere 3% believed their countries would benefit from the campaign in the end - with the majority saying other actors (the United States, Israel, Iran and the Syrian regime) would ultimately benefit the most.Poll results did however vary depending on the country. For example, Egyptian respondents polled far below average in unqualified support for the US-led campaign. While an average of 26% of respondents said they "Strongly Support" the operation, just 6% of Egyptians held that view - although the number who "Support" the operation less adamantly was higher (46%) than the average of 33%.That may reflect the fact that, while Egyptians are just as hostile in general towards ISIS, trust for the US itself is also extremely low following the Obama administration's handling of the events in the country since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.Unsurprisingly, Lebanese respondents were the most supportive of the anti-ISIS operation and the most hostile towards ISIS itself.The majority of Lebanese citizens are either Shia Muslim, Christian or Druze - groups which the Sunni Islamist ISIS views as infidels. In addition, many Sunni Muslims in Lebanon are relatively secular, granting them similar status in the eyes of the jihadists. Hence, a full 76% support the anti-ISIS operation, with the lion's share (68%) "strongly" supporting it. In contrast, 98% had an unqualified "Negative" view of ISIS, and no Lebanese respondents viewed ISIS in a positive light at all (1% viewed them as "Negative to some extent," while a further 1% did not answer.) Of course, some support for ISIS clearly does exist within Lebanon, as recent clashes and attacks involving radical Sunni Muslim elements attest to. What the poll does illustrate however is the fact that, regardless of sectarian rivalry and hatred, even most Sunni Muslims there are fearful both of the brutal puritanism of ISIS as well as its implications for the delicate social fabric of their country - where memories of bloody civil war are still vivid.The Arab group with the highest level of support for ISIS were Palestinians, with nearly a quarter (24%) of Palestinians polled viewed ISIS in a positive light.4% of Palestinians viewed ISIS as purely "Positive," in line with the average response rate of other Arab groups - only Saudi Arabia (5%) and Tunisia (7%) had higher percentages in that category. However, a full 20% viewed ISIS as "Positive to some extent" - well over the overall average of 7%. Additionally, even those Palestinians with negative views of ISIS were more ambivalent than other Arabs; just 36% held a wholly negative view of ISIS (compared to an average of 72%), and a further 36% were only "Negative to some extent" (compared to just 13% overall).The results contradict Palestinian Authority claims that Palestinian Muslims are far more "moderate" than Muslims elsewhere.

Almost 40% of the Jewish population in Israel believes in changing government policy surrounding Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount - even at the cost of bloodshed, according to a survey by the "Peace Index" published Monday by the Guttman Center at the Israel Democracy Institute and the Evens Program for Solution Conflict Resolution at Tel Aviv University.Despite this, 56% of respondents still believe in restricting Jews from praying on the Mount to "prevent friction with the Muslim world." In the same vein, nearly half (47%) support the ruling of the majority of hareidi and national-religious rabbus that Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount is forbidden, but about a quarter (26%) support the ruling of those rabbis who permit Jews to pray on the Temple Mount today.Segmentation by religiosity of respondents indicated that among traditional-religious, religious and traditional non-religious were the most supportive of changing the "status quo" regarding the Temple Mount, (respectively 49%, 46.5% and 44%), whereas among the secular and hareidi respondents, support was far lower (34% and 17%). Specifically, 96% of hareidi respondents were against contesting the rabbinic rulings forbidding prayer on the Temple Mount, compared with 60% among the national-religious. However, 33% of the secular respondents declined to answer this set of questions. Respondents were further asked whether or not they believe an agreement could be reached with the Muslim Waqf regarding the Temple Mount.The survey found that less than one third of Israeli Jews (31%) believe there is now a chance to reach an agreement that will allow members of both faiths to pray there, while the majority think there is a chance for an agreement - whether due to the Muslims who support such a ruling (30%), because of Israeli Jews (4%), or because of both combined (29%).The survey was conducted by telephone by the research institute Midgam, from November 3-5, 2014. Moscow (AFP) - Russia signed Tuesday a contract to build two nuclear reactors in Iran and announced plans for a total of nine, less than two weeks before a deadline on for deal on the country's disputed atomic programme.A series of agreements signed during a visit to Moscow by Iran's nuclear programme chief Ali Akbar Salehi includes a contract for two new reactors at the existing Russian-built Bushehr plant.The agreements foresee increasing the total number of Russian-built reactors in the country to nine as well as possibly transferring some sensitive technology relating to the production of fuel rod components.The announcement comes amid last-minute diplomacy before a November 24 deadline to find a solution to ease Western suspicions over Tehran's nuclear intentions as well as damaging sanctions on the Iranian economy. The contract is for the construction of two reactors at the same Gulf coast site as the existing 1,000 megawatt reactor at Bushehr that Russia launched last year.Construction of the two reactors will be bankrolled by Iran, said Sergei Kiriyenko, head of Russia's state nuclear company Rosatom.

No value for the contract was disclosed.

Another agreement foresees eventually expanding the number of Russian-built reactors to nine.In addition to the contract for the two reactors at Bushehr under the so-called Phase II of the project, another two could be built at the site, taking the total there to five.Rosatom said another four similar units could be built at a site that Tehran has yet to decide upon.Iran plans to build 20 more nuclear plants in the future, including four in Bushehr, to decrease its dependence on oil and gas.

Ramallah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) - Europe's top diplomat on Saturday called for a Palestinian state sharing Jerusalem as its capital with Israel, hours after the police killing of an Arab-Israeli further fanned tensions.The appeal by the European Union's Federica Mogherini followed the dawn killing of the man by police in northern Israel, with his family saying he was killed "in cold blood" and a video showing he was shot in the back."I think Jerusalem can be and should be the capital of two states," the new EU foreign policy chief told reporters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.The status of Jerusalem is a sensitive issue that has blocked peace efforts for decades.Palestinians are seeking to achieve statehood in Gaza and the West Bank with annexed east Jerusalem as their capital. Israel claims Jerusalem as its undivided and eternal capital city.In recent weeks tensions have soared, with Israel pushing plans to build new Jewish settlements in east Jerusalem and Jewish extremists demanding the right to pray at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound.Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon reiterated on Saturday that Jews -- who are allowed only to visit the compound holy to both Jews and Muslims -- would not be authorised to pray there.Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas urged Mogherini to ensure that this would never happen and that the status quo would remain unchanged, to avoid mass unrest being unleashed.In the latest violence, Israeli security forces shot dead 22-year-old Arab-Israeli citizen Kheir Hamdan who threatened them with a knife as he tried to prevent a relative being arrested, police said.Police said he was killed after they fired warning shots, but his family say he was "shot dead in cold blood" in the north Israel village of Kfar Kana.An Internet video link police provided shows Hamdan running after trying to attack security forces. As he flees a police officer is seen shooting him in the back.The death of Hamdan, who was buried in the evening, triggered a protest rally by hundreds in his village, while on the outskirts dozens of youths blocked roads with burning tyres and pelted police with stones. Three were arrested.

Uri Schechter, a resident of the Gush Etzion resident of Rosh Tzurim, is believed to be the last person who saw and spoke with Dalia Lemkos, who was murdered in Monday’s terrorist attack in Gush Etzion.Schechter gave Lemkos a ride to the hitchhiking station outside the town of Alon Shvut, where she was stabbed to death by a terrorist. He recalled the day’s events in a post on his Facebook page on Monday evening."I am writing this post with trembling hands. Today I experienced one of the difficult and most painful experiences of my life," he wrote, recalling what happened that earlier that afternoon, as he made his way home from Modi’in."I saw a young woman standing at the Shimshon junction, holding up a sign reading ‘Gush Etzion’. I stopped and when she entered the car, the sign rolled over and I saw that the other side read ‘Kiryat Gat’.”"I asked her with a smile, ‘Are you going to Gush Etzion or to Kiryat Gat?’. She replied that she lives in Tekoa in Gush Etzion and works in Kiryat Gat,” he continued.Lemkos told Shechter that she works as an occupational therapist in kindergartens and loves working with children, he recalled. "We continued to talk. I let her off at the intersection of Alon Shvut and headed towards my home in Rosh Tzurim. She got out of the car and thanked me, and I wished her a pleasant trip.”"I never imagined that a few moments later, a despicable terrorist would come and and kill her,” wrote Schechter. “May the soul of Dalia Lemkos (yes, this is how I found out her name) be bound in the bond of life.”

A 20-year-old IDF soldier was critically wounded in a terrorist stabbing attack at the entrance to Tel Aviv's Hahagana train station on Monday.Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics tried to resuscitate the victim at the site before sending him to Ichilov Hospital where he was brought to the surgery room.The victim was reportedly stabbed numerous times, including in the upper body and waist, as he tried to fight off his attacker. The attacker proceeded to try and escape from the scene towards Levanda Street as he was pursued by security forces and citizens.The terrorist has been identified by Channel 2 as Nur al-Din Abu Hashiya, an 18-year-old from Shechem (Nablus) in Samaria who had illegally entered into sovereign Israeli territory. Police spokesperson Luba Samri said "it was apparently an attack with nationalist motives. The suspect is a resident of the Nablus."Hashiya tried to snatch a weapon from his victim, but was prevented from doing so by citizens in the area at which he decided to flee.He was arrested and brought in for questioning, and during the process an officer in his 50s was reportedly lightly wounded and was given treatment at the scene; traffic in the area has been blocked off due to the attack.According to reports the terrorist was captured after trying to take refuge in a four-story apartment building, with forces locating him thanks to the help of citizens on the top floor of the building.A witness to the attack named Kobi told public radio "I got to Hahagana bridge with a friend and we saw a big man in a red sweatshirt stabbing a soldier twice, apparently someone from the air force. I stopped the car and we started to run after him, shouting 'terrorist, terrorist.'"Kobi said he returned to help the soldier who was clearly in serious condition, saying "he was conscious but his situation deteriorated very quickly," reports AFP.The latest attack follows a day of escalated Arab violence Sunday, with numerous rock, firebomb and mob attacks in the north of the country as well as in the Jerusalem area that has experienced the worst of a wave of terror in recent months.In the backdrop of the recent spate of terrorism is an incident on Saturday night, in which an Arab man tried to stab police officers with a knife before being shot in the Galilee village of Kafr Kanna.That incident sparked riots in the Galilee region which have continued sporadically into Monday. On Sunday, a Jewish man narrowly escaped with his life from an Arab lynch mob who torched his car.

Rome-Leaders of Christian Churches in Jerusalem are watching with great concern as the events currently taking place in the Esplanade of the Mosques unfold. And they are calling all parties to respect the Status Quo, the understanding reached back in the days of the Ottoman Empire, which regulates relations between the various religious groups present in the area and protects the Holy Sites of all religions within the city.This call came in the form ofa joint declaration published in Jerusalem, which has been the centre of provocation, clashes and attacks around Haram al Sharif, the “sacred enclosure” of mosques where the Temple once stood. Right-wing Jewish nationalist groups are claiming their right to go and pray there in an increasingly open manner; Muslims see this as an act of blatant provocation.  After the attack against one the movement’s leaders a day or so ago - Rabbi Yehuda Glick, who has been campaigning to have the Temple rebuilt, in the place of the al Aqsa Mosque – Jerusalem has become the scene of non-stop clashes and attacks. On Wednesday, two Israelis were deliberately run over by a Palestinian at a light rail stop. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been trying to restore calm by repeating that there are no plans to make any changes to Haram al Sharif. But his words openly contradict what has been said by some members of parliament and representatives of his own government. They made some aggressive statements during a visit to the Esplanade in recent days.This extremely tense situation - which many have already described as the potential start to a new Intifada – is causing huge concern to the leaders of Jerusalem’s Christian communities. The text, which carries the signatures of the Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal and the Custos of the Holy Land, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, reads as follows: “We, the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, wish to express our serious concern regarding response to recent activity on Haram al Sharif which has included both full closures and some limitation of access to Al Aqsa Mosque. These events have been provoked by acts of extremism which are becoming a phenomenon both here in the Holy Land and in the wider region.We condemn threats of changes to the status of the Holy Sites from wherever they may come.   The Holy Sites need constant watchful protection so that reasonable access to them can be maintained according to the prevailing Status Quo of all three Abrahamic faiths. The existing agreed Status Quo governing these sites needs to be fully respected for the sake of the whole community. Any threat to its continuity and integrity could easily lead to unpredictable consequences which would be most unwelcome in the present delicate political climate.”The statement was published on the very day 5000 police agents were deployed throughout Jerusalem as it is feared fresh violence could break out during Friday prayers. Clashes are already taking place in the East part of the city. During a funeral service held this morning for one of the victims of the light rail incident, the Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel, Yitzhak Yosef spoke out against the actions of Jewish nationalists who have been going to the Esplanade, saying: “We must stop them. This is the only way to prevent the Israeli people whom shedding any more blood,” he said in bold terms. Yosef reiterated the theory put forward by the Orthodox Jews that praying on the Esplanade is a sacrilegious act. “It is inconceivable that lower ranking rabbis should be debating what Israel’s most important and authoritative rabbis have always said in relation to such issues,” he added.
