The missing  flight MH370 was piloted by Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and first officer Fariq Abdul Hamid.

The crew members were Patrick Francis Gomes, Andrew Nari,  Goh Sock Lay, Mohd Hazrin Mohamed Hasnan, Junaidi Mohd Kassim, Tan Ser Kuin, Wan Swaid Wan Ismail, Ng Yar Chien, Foong Wai Yueng and Tan Size Hiang.

Mukherjee was the grandson of Steel and Mines Minister, Mohan Kumaramangalam, who was killed in a plane crash in 1973. Mukherjee worked for XCoal Energy and Resources, a company based in the United States. He’s the company’s vice-president of operations in China..Mukherjee and his 37-year-old wife were returning from a vacation in Vietnam. The Canadian couple have two sons, aged nine and two, who often travelled with them on vacations. This time, they stayed behind in the family home in Beijing.  Mukherjee met Bai in January 2002 while he was on business in Beijing and she was working as his translator.

Meanwhile, Rodney had worked for Energex and Mary worked in the police force. Neighbours said the Burrows are hard-working parents of three adult children: two daughters and a son.

He had to promise to bring them chocolates and presents when he returned from his trip to Beijing. Friends and family members described him as a responsible man who would always update his family of his whereabouts no matter which country he was in. His father, Gurusami Subramaniam said he worked for 20 years as a security guard to put his only son through college.

Ju's social media account has been flooded with well-wishers praying for his safe return.

Danica clutched her husband's wedding ring and fought back tears as she explained to CNN that her husband was aboard MAS MH370 flight, en route to Mongolia. She described him as the most amazing man and father, who always spent time with his boys. She said the hardest part is the cruel mystery: not knowing what happened to the plane. Weeks' brother Paul also called him a best friend. "He has so many friends, more than you could count. People love Paul. And in general, he's just a wonderful man," he said.

Lay’s sister-in-law said, they had always feared about this moment but they never talked about it. Whenever Lay was on duty, she would leave her daughter, Wei Ling, 16, at her house where Lay’s father-in-law will help to take care of her. The family had tried to keep the news from the daughter as the information had not yet been confirmed. Wei Ling cried when she heard that the plane was missing.

He and his wife, Intan Maizura, both flight attendants, have a three-year-old daughter. They were expecting their second child in May. Hazrin’s uncle said he was a man of few words but was always cheerful and close to his six sisters. Hazrin, from Subang Jaya, usually flew on the European and Australian routes but had to replace a colleague on MH370. He was supposed to be back on Sunday and fly off to Paris after the Beijing trip.

He was a technical storage executive at IBM Malaysia who was planning to move from Beijing to Malaysia with his girlfriend, an school teacher, Sarah Bajc. He would have almost missed his flight as he had confused the dates, but Bajc from China texted him to make sure he got on the plane. He raised two sons with a former wife. His last text to Sarah was "Would have missed my flight”. She replied: "Go rush love.”

Norli finished packing for her long-overdue honeymoon and posted a photograph on Facebook of her cat trying to sneak into her suitcase. The couple got married on Oct 6, 2012, about a year after courting. Razahan, tall and solidly built, loved football and the film "Titanic,". He also rode a motorcycle. The couple originally planned for a honeymoon in Cameron Highlands, but Norli got sick. So they planned a trip to Beijing instead and the excited Norli even told a friend that she dreamed of bumping into Leon Lai, a Chinese actor. The couple would have also cancelled the Beijing trip as Norli had a miscarriage, weeks before the trip. But, they decided to go ahead and Norli's parents had dropped the couple off at the airport. They said their goodbyes. Neither of them had been on a plane before.

Tony, a recent graduate of St Andrew's Junior College (SAJC) who was on his way to Beijing for a vacation with his parents. He has two younger siblings who were not on the flight. Schoolmates said they last saw the Malaysian student on Monday when they went back to school to receive their A-level results. His friend, Quek, 19, who attended SAJC with Tony, shared a room in the school's hostel. He said Tony was thinking of applying to universities in the United States. He came to Singapore on a scholarship when he was 15. Quek said they attended Catholic High School together.

Tan Size Hiang, a flight steward and father of a 5-year old daughter. His brother, Kenny, described Size Hiang as someone who is very passionate about his job and would always share his in-flight experiences with his family. Size Hiang would call his father before a flight and immediately after arriving back in Kuala Lumpur. Kenny also described Size Hiang as a family-orientated man who also cared for his siblings and parents. He has served the Malaysia Airlines for almost 18 years and also has his own flight simulator at home. He is also a football fan. On March 14, his daughter celebrated her fifth birthday.

The couple's 15-year-old son, Eric Chen Zhi Yang, had no proper sleep since the plane carrying his parents went missing. Zhi Yang’s parents had left the family's home in Klang at 8.30pm on Friday to catch the flight which departed from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 12.40am on Saturday. He said the day had seemed like any other, but he noticed that his parents decided to skip one routine that they usually did prior to any overseas trip. They usually performed prayers at a temple nearby their home before going off on any trip. However, this time they did not do so. Zhi Yang admitted that he cried incessantly upon hearing the news of the flight's disappearance but he had to put up a brave front for his 11-year-old brother, who is unable to understand what is happening.

Vinod, 59, Chetna, 55 & Swanand Kolekar: The Kolekar were on their way to visit the eldest-born, Sanved Kolekar, who works in Beijing. Sanved was waiting at the Beijing airport when MAS first reported that its flight lost contact with the air traffic control. "My parents are on the flight. I don't know what happened. They (the airlines) haven't given me any information, it's very difficult because I don't understand the local language," he said. The Kolekars left Mumbai on Friday on a MAS flight to Kuala Lumpur, from where they took the connecting flight to Beijing. Vinod, an engineer, had recently opted for voluntary retirement, his wife had retired as a nurse last year and Swanand has graduated in instrumentation engineering and was awaiting his Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE results.

44-years-old Kranti, was a former chemistry lecturer from Pune in western India. She was traveling to North Korea to visit her husband, Prahlad Shirsath, who had been working abroad for a non-profit organisation. His contract is supposed to end on Apr 6 and the couple had planned to come back to Mumbai after that. Prahlad traveled to Kuala Lumpur after hearing news that the plane had gone missing. Prahlad said, “My younger son Tashwant, 11 who daily calls his mother’s cellphone cries after not getting any response". Tashwant and the couple’s other son, Rahul, 16 are waiting in Pune.

After her father's death, Suhaili, the youngest daughter became close to her mother, Rohana, and had often ferried her around, including to nearby mosque. Suhaili, who had recently completed her haaj, was described as an obedient girl who took good care of her mother. "We feel contented knowing that she had performed her duties as a Muslim. She had been a good daughter especially after her father died," Rohana said. Suhaili's former schoolteacher Narnyni Ismail, 58, burst into tears when she talked about the employee of Freescale Semiconductor whom she taught in Standard 1. Narnyni described Suhaili as a smart child who was always smiling. “The kindest soul I have ever come across to in my life. Always smiling, I am sure she is in a better place, with Allah,” her mother said.

Sofuan’s mother always spoke of getting him married. But he was always busy travelling and working, and was not seeing anyone. The International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) officer may be tough-looking but he was described as a friendly and soft-hearted person. Sofuan was suppose to leave the country on Feb 7 but was the trip was postponed due to some clearance reasons. A serious worker, his friends and colleagues often look up to him because of his longer experience as a civil servant. The only son of five siblings, he was also active in sports and has taken parts in marathons, swimming and kayaking.

At 10pm on Tuesday, Najib had announced that British investigators from its Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have confirmed that the flight of Malaysian Airlines MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean. MH370, which had been missing for the last 17 days disappeared from Malaysian radars at 2.15am on March 8 after taking off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport for Beijing at 1.30am. When French businessman Ghyslain Wattrelos landed in Beijing on Saturday afternoon after a flight from Paris, he expected to reunite with his family. Instead, he was met by two French diplomats who informed him that a MAS flight carrying his wife, Laurence Wattrelos, 52, and children, Hadrien Wattrelos, 17, and Ambre Wattrelos, 14, had gone missing. The Wattrelos moved to Beijing more than six years ago. His family members, along with Hadrien's girlfriend, Zhao Yan, were returning to Beijing after a beach holiday. The Wattrelos and Yan had spent four days at a resort in Cherating Beach. Photos dated over the past week taken by Yan were posted to one of her social media account. All three, Hadrien, Amber and Yan attended the Lycée Français International de Pékin School. The Wattrelos were planning to move to Paris in June. Friends said the family was active in the local Roman Catholic community and regularly attended the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Laurence was also active in the French school's parent-teacher association and served as the vice president.

Chew Kar Mooi, 31

Family members of bank worker Chew Kar Mooi, find it hard to accept that the ill-fated plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean. Mooi’s sister Chew Kar Hui, said it was “very hard” for the family to accept the news. “There’s no detailed explanation except that the last position was in the Indian Ocean,” she said. She said her family was still hoping that Mooi and everyone else on the plane were safe at an unknown location. “Although I know the chances are slim, we are still optimistic,” she added. Hui said, her parents were so heartbroken upon learning Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's announcement on Monday night. “My mum also had dreamt twice that my sister came back home as usual,” Hui added.

Tan Ah Meng, 46, Chuang Hsiu Leng, 48, Tan Wei Chen, 19
Brother of businessman Tan Ah Meng, said he and his Taiwanese wife, Chuang Hsiu Leng, were supposed to go to Beijing on an earlier flight but later decided to board the MH370 with their eldest son, Tan Wei Chew, 19, before he leaves for studies in the United States. Tan's brother said his mother had been crying since the announcement that the flight had ended in the Indian Ocean. He said,” My parents are very old. One is 84 and the other is 82 and both suffer from heart ailments. We are afraid they might not be able to take it and would just collapse. They are already very heartbroken.” The couple has two other sons, aged 14 and 12, who have been staying with relatives since the aircraft went missing on March 8.

Andrew Nari, 49

Brought up in the Roman Catholic faith, Nari followed his parents to coastal town Dalat, Sarawak where his father taught. There he had his primary school education and later followed his uncle to Kuching to study at the Green Road Secondary School. After completing his Form 5, Nari returned to his longhouse in Bukit Aup and had worked as a tourist guide before entering St Peter’s Seminary for two years. He had wanted to become a Catholic priest, but after two years with a Kuching seminary, he opted to become an air steward with MAS in 1989. “Because he is fluent in English, Nari had been serving international routes. He always flies to Western destinations to cities like Los Angeles and London. As far as I know, he seldom flies the Eastern routes like Beijing, Korea and Japan. We fear he might have met his fate on March 8,” his uncle, Augustine said. Augustine recalled that whenever longhouse folks went to Kuala Lumpur, Nari would find time to care and entertain them. "Nari loved his folks. Although he has left home a long time ago, he comes back twice yearly during Gawai and Christmas to be with them," he added. Andrew’s wife is a former stewardess who resigned after the couple had two children, Malcom, 14 and Maira Elizabeth, 18. Nari’s mother, Catherine Tamoh left on March 8 to Kuala Lumpur where she has been waiting for news from Putrajaya concerning the cabin crew chief.

Anne Catherine Daisy, 56

Daisy’s brother, Julian Arulappu, told an online news portal that his sister had wished him "good night" during their brief telephone conversation, before she took off. Daisy’s daughter had been expressing her hopes and wishes via Facebook since the aircraft went missing on Mac 8. Her last status on Mac 17 says, “Please keep praying everyone. Please. We haven't given up hope. We look forward to our mum coming home every single day.”

Fariq Ab Hamid , 27

Fariq, the co-pilot of the missing MAS MH370 plane, was on his first flight aboard a Boeing 777 as a fully-approved pilot. Fariq, who joined the airline seven years ago, was just starting to pilot the Boeing 777 and the ill-fated flight to Beijing was only his sixth in the cockpit of a 777 and his first without a check pilot overseeing him. MAS CEO said, "The first five flights, the co-pilot normally flies with what we call the check co-pilot. He actually passed the first five flights. We do not see any problem with him.”

Biby Nazli Mohd, 62, Hashim Noorida Mohd Hashim, 57, Maria Mohd Yunus Ramli, 32, Dina Mohd Yunus Ramli, 30
Former Celcom chief executive officer and current Modal Perdana Group chairman Datuk Mohamed Ramli Abbas’s wife, Datin Biby Nazli Mohd Hassim and daughters, Maria Ramli and Dina Ramli had boarded the aircraft bound for Beijing. Biby’s younger sister Noorida Hashim, 57, had also accompanied them to Beijing.  Noorida, an administrative assistant secretary at the Health and Environment Department celebrated her retirement hours before she boarded the ill-fated flight. She was supposed to retire on Apr 1, but wanted to go on a holiday before that. Dina and her husband Nizam Rosli, 31, celebrated their first wedding anniversary a few days before she boarded MH370.

Norfadzillah Mat Rahim, 39

The mother of four Nor Fadzillah Mat Rahim, was described as the “the best daughter-in-law by her mother-in-law, Hajah Puteh Idris, 68. Hajah Puteh when met at the aiport was openly weeping for Nor Fadzillah. She could only tell the reporters there that she received the dreaded call from MAS at 9am, before breaking down a few minutes later. Nor Fadzillah who worked in Freescale was scheduled to be in China for a week. Hajah Puteh said Nor Fadzillah did not eat well days before she left and frequently said that she did not have a good feeling over the Beijing trip. But, Hajah Puteh had consoled her every time she complained and urged her to go as it was her duty. Nor Fadzillah has three boys aged 13, 10, four and one girl, 2. “Though she’s my daughter-in-law, she was like my own daughter,” added Hajah.

Zaharie Ahamd Shah, 53

Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53, joined MAS in 1981 and is praised as a passionate pilot who has logged 18,365 hours of flying time at work and still more at home on his sophisticated simulator. His YouTube channel features videos showing him cheerfully explaining how to fix an air-conditioner, patch damaged windows, and other DIY projects. Among the channels he subscribes to are ones on making balloon animals, Comedy Central and the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. Malaysian media reports have quoted colleagues calling Zaharie a "superb pilot", who also served as an examiner, authorised by the Malaysian Civil Aviation Department, to conduct simulator tests for pilots.

Safuan Ramlan, 32

32-year-old Ramlan Safuan checked in on his Facebook page at KLIA before boarding the flight. The post was followed by a friend’s joke about itik pancung and having dog soup in China. Ramlan responded in disgust. He also told another friend, Din Tambang, that they would hang out when he returns. His wife Jelawati Jalil, 32, who was waiting for news of her husband, the Freescale manager at Kuala Lumpur International Airport said, "There were no strange signs before he left for KLIA. He has been working with Freescale for more than five years. They used to send him abroad previously but it has been a while since his last trip.”

Jee Jing Hang, 41

Jee Jing Siong, the elder brother of computer programmer Jing Hang, is finding it hard break the news to his sons aged 11 and 13. The boys have been living with Jing Hang's ex-wife after the couple went their separate ways. He had left for Beijing to attend a business trip. Jing Siong said, Jing Hang had called about 11.30pm befoer boarding the flight to inform his mother regarding the trip. Jing Siong said his brother was close to everyone at home. The last they met him was during the Chinese New Year celebration. Though this was his first trip to Beiijng, he had frequently travelled to other countries for business and holiday.

Patrick Francis Gomes 

His cousin, Rachel Santa Maria, 50, said although what had happened was shocking and devastating for the family, they would not give up hope. “We refuse to accept the situation. We are waiting and praying and hoping for the best. His wife and four children are in a fragile state. So we as the family can only pray and hope he return safely,” she said. Many friends and family members showed their concern and support on Gomes’s Facebook wall. Gomes’s youngest daughter, Michelle Leigh, 23, thanked everyone on behalf of the family for their prayers and well wishes on her Facebook wall. “Hello everybody. Thank you so much for your warm wishes and prayers. My family and I are praying very hard and just hoping for the best. Thanks again,” she said. Rachel said the congregation at St Francis Xavier Church in Petaling Jaya, where Gomes’s family attends weekly mass, had organised special prayers for the family as well as all the other passengers and crew members.

Friends said Ng is a very cheerful person  in Mewah Oils Sdn. Bhd. She worked as a Shipping Executive in the Operation Department. The boyish and friendly Ng was described as a loud person and everyone’s favourite colleague.

Junaidi Kassim , 37

Junaidi was a loving family man whose Facebook posts revolve largely around his children’s report card day, birthday celebrations and tuitions. He had been a flight steward since 1997. Junaidi's sister-in-law,  Nurafizan Ayub, 30, said the whole family did not want to think too much of the rumours and all kinds of speculation that were spread by various quarters since his plane went missing. "We conducted special prayers at home. So far family members still think positive, except for Junaidi's two children, aged 11 and eight, who are still in trauma," she said. Nurafizan said he behaved strangely before boarding that fateful flight. “He was quieter than usual. He told me to take his car as no one would take care of it,” she said. Junaidi is the husband of her elder sister, Norazlina Ayub, 39.

She said she began by emailing Sarah Bajc, an American whose boyfriend, Philip Wood, was a passenger on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and who has made frequent TV appearances since the plane's March 8 disappearance.Fox spokesman Scott Grogin said Tipton's "conduct and communications" violated company policy. We can see countless millions of miles into the blackness of space, but a 3-mile depth in the ocean is testing the very limits of our technology because most of it just doesn’t work underwaterMen have played golf on the moon. Images transmitted from the surface of Mars have become utterly commonplace. The Hubble Space Telescope can see 10 billion to 15 billion light-years into the universe.But a mere three miles under the sea? That’s a true twilight zone.As the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 demonstrates, at that depth — minuscule compared with the vastness of space — everything is a virtual unknown. A high-tech unmanned underwater submarine, Bluefin-21, has been dispatched four times to look for wreckage from the jet, but the crushing water pressure and impenetrability of this void mean that only its most recent pair of missions were completed. Scrutinizing dust and rock particles on the Red Planet, tens of millions of miles away, is a breeze. Understanding what’s on the seafloor of our own planet is not.About 95% of deep ocean floor remains unmapped, but that’s almost certainly where the most sought after aircraft in history is going to be found. “Our knowledge of the detailed ocean floor is very, very sparse,” Erik van Sebille, an oceanographer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, tells TIME.The reason for our ignorance is simple. Virtually all modern communications technology — be it light, radio, X-rays, wi-fi — is a form of electromagnetic radiation, which seawater just loves to suck up. “The only thing that does travel [underwater] is sound,” says van Sebille, “and that’s why we have to use sonar.”Sound is formed by mechanical waves and so can penetrate denser mediums like liquids: but at a 3-mile (5 km) depth, even sonar starts to have problems establishing basic parameters. The waters in which the search for MH 370 is happening, for example, were thought to be between 13,800 and 14,400 ft. (4,200 and 4,400 m) deep, because that’s what it said on the charts that had been drawn up over time by passing ships with sonar capabilities. It turns out those seas are at least 14,800 ft. (4,500 m) deep. We only know that now because that’s the depth at which Bluefin-21 will automatically resurface — as it did on its maiden foray — when onboard sensors tell it that it’s way, way out of its operating depth. The problems with Bluefin-21, van Sebille says, show us that “even our best maps are really not good here.”The other issue affecting visibility is the sheer volume of junk in the ocean. About 5.25 trillion particles of plastic trash presently billow around the planet, say experts, weighing half a million tons. There are five huge garbage patches in the world’s seas, where the swirling of currents makes the mostly plastic debris accumulate. The largest of these is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a gyre measuring an estimated 270,000 to 5.8 million sq. mi. (700,000 to 15 million sq km). This refuse gets ingested by plankton, fish, birds and larger marine mammals, imperiling our entire ecosystem.Flotsam debris has already impeded the hunt for MH 370. Hundreds of suspicious items spotted by satellite have sent aircraft and ships on hugely costly detours to investigate what turned out to be trash. (On Friday an air-and-surface search continued, with 12 aircraft and 11 ships scouring an area of some 20,000 sq. mi. [52,000 sq km] about 1,200 miles [2,000 km] northwest of Perth.) Officials are saying that such efforts are becoming futile.For all we know, Bluefin-21 could also be confused by the sheer volume of garbage down there. According to a study by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute published last June, based on 8,000 hours of underwater video, an unbelievable quantity of waste is strewn across the ocean floor. A third of the debris is thought to be plastic — bags, bottles, pellets, crates — but there is a vast amount of metal trash as well, including many of the 10,000 shipping containers estimated to be lost each year. “I was surprised that we saw so much trash in deeper water,” said Kyra Schlining, lead author on the study. “We don’t usually think of our daily activities as affecting life two miles deep in the ocean.”That’s because we can’t see it. It’s tempting to say that MH 370 might as well have vanished into space — only if it had, we’d have found it by now.

Francis entered the darkened basilica with a lone candle, which he then shared with others to slowly illuminate the church. The symbolic service commemorates the darkness of the faithful over the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday and their joy and light at his resurrection on Easter Sunday.Francis urged the priests, bishops, cardinals and ordinary Catholics gathered for the late night service to remember when they first found their faith. "Do I remember it? Have I forgotten it? Look for it. You'll find it. The Lord is waiting."Trying to remember isn't an act of nostalgia but rather a way to bring the "fire" of faith "to all people, to the very ends of the Earth," he said.After his homily, Francis proceeded to baptize each of the 10, starting with Italian brothers Giorgio and Jacopo Capezzuoli, aged 8 and 10. JERUSALEM (AP) — The dark hall inside Christianity's holiest shrine was illuminated with the flames from thousands of candles on Saturday as worshippers participated in the holy fire ceremony, a momentous spiritual event in Orthodox Easter rites.Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected at the site where the Church of the Holy Sepulcher now stands in the Old City of Jerusalem. While the source of the holy fire is a closely guarded secret, believers say the flame appears spontaneously from his tomb on the day before Easter to show Jesus has not forgotten his followers.The ritual dates back at least 1,200 years.Thousands of Christians waited outside the church for it to open Saturday morning. Custody of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is shared by a number of denominations that jealously guard their responsibilities under a fragile network of agreements hammered out over the last millennia. In accordance with tradition, the church's doors were unlocked by a member of a Muslim family, who for centuries has been the keeper of the ancient key that is passed on within the family from generation to generation.Once inside, clergymen from the various Orthodox denominations in robes and hoods jostled for space with local worshippers and pilgrims from around the world.Top Orthodox clergymen descended into the small chamber marking the site of Jesus' tomb as worshippers eagerly waited in the dim church clutching bundles of unlit candles and torches.After a while, candles emerged lit with "holy fire" — said to have been lit by a miracle as a message to the faithful from heaven.Bells rang as worshippers rushed to use the flames to ignite their own candles.In mere seconds, the bursts of light spread throughout the cavernous church as flames jumped from one candle to another. 10 more bodies found inside sunken ferry by divers

MOKPO, South Korea (AP) — Divers recovered 13 bodies from inside a ferry that sank off South Korea, pushing the confirmed death toll to 46, officials said Sunday. The discovery came after rescuers finally gained access to the inside of the ship following three days of failure and frustration caused by strong currents and bad visibility due to inclement weather.More than 300 people are missing or dead, and the captain of the ferry has been arrested on suspicion of negligence and abandoning people in need. Two crew members also were taken into custody, including a rookie third mate who a prosecutor said was steering in challenging waters unfamiliar to her when the accident occurred.Late Saturday, divers broke a window in the submerged ferry and initially retrieved three bodies, said Kim Kwang-hyun, a coast guard official. These apparently were the first bodies recovered from inside the ferry since it sank Wednesday. Later Sunday, government officials announced that 10 more bodies had been found inside the ferry, bringing the confirmed toll to 46. Officials said 256 people were missing, most of them high school students on a holiday trip.Details about how divers managed to enter the ship and where exactly the bodies were found or their identities weren't clear.Hundreds of civilian, government and military divers were involved in the search.The ferry's captain, Lee Joon-seok, 68, was arrested along with one of the Sewol's three helmsmen and the 25-year-old third mate, prosecutors said."I am sorry to the people of South Korea for causing a disturbance and I bow my head in apology to the families of the victims," Lee told reporters Saturday morning as he left the Mokpo Branch of Gwangju District Court to be jailed. But he defended his much-criticized decision to wait about 30 minutes before ordering an evacuation."At the time, the current was very strong, the temperature of the ocean water was cold, and I thought that if people left the ferry without (proper) judgment, if they were not wearing a life jacket, and even if they were, they would drift away and face many other difficulties," Lee said. "The rescue boats had not arrived yet, nor were there any civilian fishing ships or other boats nearby at that time."The Sewol had left the northwestern port of Incheon on Tuesday with 476 passengers on an overnight journey to the holiday island of Jeju in the south, including 323 students from Danwon High School in Ansan. It capsized within hours of the crew making a distress call to the shore a little before 9 a.m. Wednesday. Most of the missing passengers are believed to be trapped inside the 6,852-ton vessel.With the chances of survival increasingly slim, it is shaping up to be one of South Korea's worst disasters. The loss is more keenly felt because of so many young people, aged 16 or 17, on board. The country's last major ferry disaster was in 1993, when 292 people were killed.By the time the evacuation order was issued, the ship was listing at too steep an angle for many people to escape the tight hallways and stairs inside. Several survivors told The Associated Press that they never heard any evacuation order.Senior prosecutor Yang Jung-jin told reporters that the third mate was steering the ship Wednesday morning as it passed through an area with lots of islands clustered close together and fast currents. According to investigators, the accident came at a point where the ship had to make a turn. Prosecutor Park Jae-eok said investigators were looking at whether the third mate ordered a turn so sharp that it caused the vessel to list.Yang said the third mate has six months of experience, and hadn't steered in the area before because another mate usually handles those duties. She took the wheel this time because heavy fog caused a departure delay, Yang said, adding that investigators do not know whether the ship was going faster than usual.Helmsman Park Kyung-nam identified the third mate as Park Han-kyul. The helmsman who was arrested, 55-year-old Cho Joon-ki, spoke to reporters outside court and accepted some responsibility." There was a mistake on my part as well, but the steering had been turned much more than usual," Cho said.Lee has four decades of experience at sea. He had been captaining ferries for 10 years by the time he was interviewed by the Jeju Today website in 2004, and said he had sailed on ocean freighters for 20 years before that.But he was not the Sewol's main captain, and worked on the ship about 10 days a month, helmsman Oh Yong-seok said.Lee was not on the bridge when the ship began to list. "I gave instructions on the route, then briefly went to the bedroom when it happened," he told reporters. According to the court, Lee faces five charges, including negligence of duty and violation of maritime law, and the two other crew members each face three related charges.Lee was required by law to be on the bridge helping his crew when the ferry passed through tough-to-navigate areas, said Yang, the senior prosecutor.Yang said Lee also abandoned people in need of help and rescue, saying, "The captain escaped before the passengers." Video aired by Yonhap showed Lee among the first people to reach the shore by rescue boat.Yang said the two crew members arrested failed to reduce speed near the islands and failed to carry out necessary measures to save lives.It's not clear why the two crew members made the sharp turn, Yang said. He said prosecutors would continue to look into whether something other than the turn could have made the ferry sink, but he added that there were no strong waves that could have knocked down the ferry at the time.Prosecutors will have 10 days to decide whether to indict the captain and crew, but can request a 10-day extension from the court.Also on Saturday, angry relatives of missing passengers expressed outrage at officials who were holding a briefing on the disaster in a gymnasium on Jindo island where hundreds of family members are waiting for word about their loved ones. A few dozen relatives surged toward the stage, hurling rapid-fire questions at the officials. One man tried to choke a coast guard lieutenant and punch a maritime policeman, but missed." The government should have hurried up and done something, but they just wasted four days, which led to this point. I think this is more like a man-made disaster," said Lee Jong-eui, a businessman whose 17-year-old nephew, Nam Hyun-chul, is among the missing.Three vessels with cranes arrived at the accident site to prepare to salvage the ferry, but they will not hoist the ship before getting approval from family members of those still believed inside because the lifting could endanger any survivors, said a coast guard officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, citing department rules.___Klug reported from Seoul. U.N. peace envoy criticizes Israeli Easter security in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli police refused to let the U.N.'s peace envoy to the Middle East, other diplomats and a crowd of Palestinians pass through a barricade to attend a pre-Easter ritual in the Jerusalem church that Christians revere as the burial site of Jesus, the U.N. official said on Saturday.The incident, following two days of violence at a separate holy site known as a flashpoint for Jews and Muslims, underscored rising tensions in the politically charged city ahead of Pope Francis's Holy Land visit next month.Israel dismissed the U.N. complaint, calling it an attempt to inflate a "micro-incident" and saying police at the barricade keep people back as a crowd-control measure while there was no reported violence among the tens of thousands of Christians who thronged to the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem's old walled city to witness the "Holy Fire" ritual.Holy Fire is a traditional Orthodox Christian ceremony at which worshippers believe a miraculous fire appears at the site identified as Jesus's tomb every year on the day before Easter. Robert Serry, the United Nation's peace envoy to the Middle East, said in a statement Israeli security officers had stopped a group of Palestinian worshippers and diplomats in a procession near the church, "claiming they had orders to that effect".Serry added in separate remarks to Reuters he had waited with Italian, Norwegian and Dutch diplomats for up to a half hour, crushed by a crowd against a barricade, while Israeli officers ignored his appeals to speak with a superior."It became really dangerous because there was a big crowd and I was pushed against a metal fence the police put up there, the crowd tried to push really hard," Serry said, adding they might have been trampled had police not finally let them pass."I don't understand why this happened," he added. "I'm not saying I felt my life was in imminent danger, but this wasn't something you associate with a peaceful procession for Easter."

Terry Balata, a Palestinian witness, said she heard the Israeli officer tell Serry, who was with about 30 other diplomats and worshippers, "so what?" when he identified himself as U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's envoy to the region.Charging "unacceptable behavior from the Israeli security authorities," Serry demanded in his statement that all parties "respect the right of religious freedom."An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman denied Serry's charges and accused him of displaying "a serious problem of judgment" as there was no reported violence during the prayers and a customary torch-lit "Holy Fire" ritual held at the church. Spokesman Yigal Palmor acknowledged though that police took steps to limit the crowd packed into the church and narrow streets outside it. "If there was any pushing and shoving I would say it was a micro-incident," Palmor said.In a statement, the ministry criticized Serry's charges as an "odd communique," adding that Christian officials had thanked Israeli police for their handling of the event."Had any harm come to the pilgrims due to uncontrolled crowd movements, Mr. Serry would have been prompt to cast responsibility on the same police which he now condemns for doing its job properly," the Israeli statement added.Israeli police did not immediately comment on the incident, which came as they grappled with tensions elsewhere in the old city where Jews celebrated a week-long Passover festival at the same time as Christians prepared for Easter.Earlier this week, police confronted Muslim protesters throwing stones near the al-Aqsa Mosque as Jews visited the surrounding area, which Judaism reveres as the place where biblical temples once stood. KYIV, Ukraine, 19 April, 2014 –Acting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia and the Chief Monitor of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM), Amb. Ertugrul Apakan, met today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.  The meeting was also attended by representatives of the participants of the 17 April Geneva meeting – the European Union, the Russian Federation and the United States. At the meeting it was agreed to move ahead rapidly with the practical implementation of the Geneva Statement. In this regard the meeting’s participants recognized the need to take immediate concrete steps towards de-escalation. Deshchytsia informed on first steps already taken in this direction.  Apakan informed of plans to send the Deputy Chief Monitor to Eastern Ukraine today to work on the practical modalities of the implementation, as well as on the ongoing work of the monitoring teams on the ground.The participants in the meeting agreed to meet regularly in the coming days to co-ordinate implementation of the Geneva Statement as swiftly as possible.
