Missing MH370: There's still a glimmer of hope-THE STAR ONLINE-APR 2,14-Original article mar 17,14-PETALING JAYA: The possibility of the MH370 flying into a corridor of up to the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan border naturally increases the chances of it being found.
Mystery of MH370

Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia senior fellow Bunn Nagara said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s statement about the flight’s last communication with satellites offers a glimmer of hope.“Since the northern corridor has more landmass and involves more countries, it would be logical that the airplane might have landed,” he said when contacted yesterday.Bunn said the tense geo- political environment in the region involving countries such as India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the former Soviet republics such as Tajikistan, Turk-menistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan would mean their airspace would be tightly monitored.“Therefore getting the co-operation from these countries to provide their radar data would be important to determine whether the MH370 might have flown there,” he said.According to a Reuters report, the southern corridor that starts from Indonesia to the southern part of the Indian ocean is one place where a commercial airliner can crash without anyone spotting it, even by satellite.Quoting a source from the Australian civil aviation authority, the huge expanse of water is one of the most remote places in the world and also one of the deepest, posing potentially enormous challenges for the search effort.“There is almost no radar coverage in most of Western Australia and almost all of the Indian Ocean. If anything is more than 100km offshore, you don’t see it,” the source said.As hijacking has been postulated, reports have emerged about the possible runways where the missing aircraft could have landed. The Mirror of the United Kingdom reported that with enough fuel to fly anywhere from Pakistan to Western Australia, the missing plane could have landed on any of the 634 runways, a projection based on a map from WNYC, website of non-commercial public radio stations located in New York City.“A Boeing 777 pilot is quoted in Slate as estimating runway length requirement to be 1.524km while a recent Wall Street Journal article quoted sources stating the flight could have continued for 3,700km from its last known position,” WNYC said.

Malaysian Flight 370 May Have Landed in Pakistan, Source at Boeing – Report – UPDATE
Lee Ferrara | March 19, 2014 | Is MH370 in Pakistan?

The following is from the Langley Intelligence Group Network, which is a Washington, DC-based service providing global intelligence and forecasting from former CIA, U.S. intelligence and national security officers, drawing on an international network of experts and sources:The Malaysian government reportedly is investigating the possibility that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 avoided radar detection and landed in Pakistan near the Afghanistan border inside Taliban-controlled territory, according to the UK Independent .Investigators confiscated a homemade flight simulator from the pilot’s home to see if it reveals any useful information . . . the Malaysian foreign minister told reporters that Malaysia asked several Asian countries for assistance in its investigation, including Pakistan.Pakistan dismissed the idea that a Boeing 777 could land undetected inside the country but promised to work with the Malaysian government in its search for the missing plane.LIGNET analysts received information from a source at Boeing that the company believes the plane did land in Pakistan.Israel is taking the possibility of a terrorist attack seriously by mobilizing air defenses and scrutinizing approaching civilian aircraft, according to the Times of Israel.A Boeing 777 requires a lengthy, 7,500-foot runway, and Pakistan has many of them, meaning Flight 370 could conceivably be hidden in a hangar inside the country.U.S. surveillance of the area may be able to shed light on the theory through satellite imagery or signals intelligence.

Airnation.net has also learned from our sources that the above is accurate. Whether the source is correct (that the missing airliner is there) we do not know at this time. But the source is reliable in our view.U.S. assets are pulling out of the Indian Ocean (as already reported) and focusing on the ‘north’ corridor of the missing 777.

Special Services: Malaysian Boeing located near Kandahar, the passengers and crew captured

"Pilots Flight MH370 not guilty of stealing a plane was hijacked by unknown persons," said the "MK" authoritative source in the security services. This information in any of the world's media has not previously been published.

"Missing March 8 on Malaysia Airlines airliner with 227 passengers on board and 12th members of the crew captured and is southeast of Kandahar, in Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan. Aircraft stands on a small" rural "road with a broken wing - t . liner is alleged to have committed a hard landing. All passengers alive, divided into seven groups and live in a "mud hut" from hand to mouth. From the aircraft were captured about 20 Asian Professionals, the capture of which was necessary, presumably for bargaining with the U.S. side. That Currently there are hijacking - someone's order. " All this correspondent "MK" on condition of anonymity said a source in the security services.

But could the Boeing 777-200ER take the usual "rural" road? Expert Explains Accident Investigation Evgeny Kuzmin (Centre for Scientific and Technical Research and Expertise)
- Such aircraft may well sit on plain dirt road less dense surface length of about 2000 meters. However, should be free to approach the runway - that is, there should be trees and mountains. Must have appropriate opportunities to be able to maneuver. When hard landing on the "bad" surface, of course, can break under the chassis or broken wing (weight 777-200ER with the passengers, crew and cargo - 200 tons. - "MK").

Malaysian police have cleared the 227 passengers on board the missing Malaysian airliner of suspicion of hijacking but the plane’s crew, including pilots, are still under investigation.Malaysia’s top police officer, Khalid Abu Bakar, admits a three-week investigation has been inconclusive and that investigators may never discover what caused the plane’s disappearance.“Give us more time,” Inspector-General Khalid told Bernama, Malaysia’s state news agency.“We may not even known the real cause of this incident,” he said.As the relatives of passengers angrily accuse Malaysian authorities of withholding information, Inspector-General Khalid said releasing some details could jeopardise the largest and most complex investigation undertaken in Malaysia.“I’m sorry, there are things we cannot reveal to you … not that I don’t want to reveal to you, but we cannot do that because it’s a criminal investigation, ongoing,” he said.“We have not concluded the whole thing and we are still awaiting reports from experts overseas and internally.”Inspector-General Khalid said: “Who knows, maybe there will be prosecution later on. So this will affect the prosecution’s case, if we start revealing our findings.”The police investigation has focused on the possibilities of hijacking, sabotage or psychological problems among passengers or crew.FBI forensic experts are still examining a flight simulator that was seized from the home of senior pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53, but have so far not found anything suspicious.

Police have so far interviewed 170 people.

Lack of information about the investigation has fueled unsubstantiated conspiracy theories in Malaysia’s social media. One of the most popular is that the plane was diverted by CIA operatives masquerading as passengers to the US military installation in Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.According to the theory, cargo in the plane was related to the technology of unmanned drone flights.

Malaysian PM to visit Perth as MH370 search moves closer to western Australian coast
English.news.cn   2014-04-02 07:36:22 -english news.cn

PERTH, Australia, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is scheduled to visit this western Australian port city on Wednesday for the ongoing search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.Meanwhile, the designated search area for Wednesday is closer to the western Australian coast, now about 1,490 km northwest of Perth, according to the latest information from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).In parallel, the intensity of the hunt keeps increasing. British Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Tuesday that Royal Navy submarine HMS Tireless has arrived in the southern Indian Ocean to help with the search. With its advanced underwater search capability, HMS Tireless, a Trafalgar Class submarine, will be able to contribute to the efforts to locate the missing plane, the MoD said. The MoD added that, HMS Echo, a British Royal Navy coastal survey ship, is also due to join the hunt soon for the ill-fated Boeing 777 jetliner, which disappeared early March 8 while carrying 239 people -- including 154 Chinese passengers -- from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.Seven Chinese vessels and two Chinese IL-76 planes are involved in the search west of Perth, and a three-ship Chinese naval flotilla previously deployed in the Gulf of Aden for escort missions has teamed up with a Chinese patrol vessel to search for the missing plane south of Australia's Christmas Island.Despite massive multinational efforts, no hard evidence has so far been acquired about the whereabouts of MH370.

I saw flight MH370 floating in water on day it vanished’: Malaysian woman claims she spotted missing jet as she flew over Andaman Islands – but was ignored by police-mar 21,14-Osun Defender---'I saw flight MH370 floating in water on day it vanished': Malaysian woman claims she spotted missing jet as she flew over Andaman Islands - but was ignored by police.Malaysian woman claims to have seen missing MH370 in the water near Andaman Islands on day it disappeared

As aircraft and ships continued to search for debris which might be that of the missing flight MH370 on Friday a Malaysian woman on a flight across the Indian Ocean claimed to have seen an aircraft in the water near the Andaman Islands on the day the the jet disappeared. The Kuala Lumpur wife is so convinced about what she saw at 2.30 in the afternoon of March 8, several hours after MH370 had been reported missing, that she has filed an official report with police. Is this the simple MH370 theory to end them all? Claim that fire knocked out crew as they headed for emergency landing takes web by storm. And she admitted that she had received scorn about her account, including from a pilot who said the aircraft she was on would have been too high for her to have seen anything on the ocean below. But mother of 10 Mrs Latife Dalelah, 53, insisted she saw a silver object in the shape of an aircraft on the water as she was flying from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur. It was about an hour after her aircraft had flown past the southern Indian city of Chennai.‘ Throughout the journey I was staring out of the window of the aircraft as I couldn’t sleep during the flight,’ she told the New Straits Times. The in-flight monitor showed that her plane was crossing the Indian Ocean and she had seen several shipping liners and islands – before she saw the silvery object.‘I took a closer look and was shocked to see what looked like the tail and wing of an aircraft on the water,’ she said.‘I woke my friends on the flight but they laughed me off,’ she added. The same reaction has come from a pilot who questioned how anyone flying at about seven miles above sea level could see anything like a boat or ship from so high up.But Mrs Dalelah insisted to the paper: ‘I know what I saw. I am convinced that I saw the aircraft. I will not lie. I had just returned from my pilgrimage.’A large part of what she thought was an aircraft was submerged, she said. When she tried to tell an air stewardess what she had seen, she was told to get some sleep. When her plane landed at Kuala Lumpur at about 4pm on that Saturday she told her children what she had seen. ‘That is when they told me that MH370 had gone missing,’ she told the paper.‘My son-in-law, a policeman, was convinced that I had seen an aircraft and asked me to lodge a police report the same day.‘Many of my friends on the flight doubted me at first, but they are beginning to believe me now that we know the plane (MH370) turned back and entered the Indian Ocean.’The agency co-ordinating the exhaustive search operation for MH370 still holds out hope of finding people alive, as authorities scramble to cover the massive 600,000 square-kilometre (230,000 square-mile) search area. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) revealed on Friday that they were preparing for the remote possibility of a human rescue mission, should the two large objects spotted by satellite some 2,500 kilometres (1,500 miles) off the coast of Perth be related to the missing Malaysian Airlines flight.John Young, the general manager of AMSA’s Emergency Response Division, said the focus of the massive search operation – which now includes 29 planes, 21 ships and six helicopters from more than 20 contributor countries – was first and foremost on trying to locate the large pieces of debris, one up to 24 metres (78ft) in length, the other five metres (16 feet).‘We want to find these objects because they might be the best lead to where we might find people to be rescued,’ Mr Young said.‘We have done some work on that area and we’re still focused on that task, to find people to be rescued.‘It is a very large team effort… with the international community providing technical support and information and we’re all very grateful for that.’The two objects are in one of the most remote areas of the world – about the same distance from Perth as London is from Moscow – which means that aircraft only have a limited time to conduct searches. And it takes them four hours to get there. What’s more, the area is renowned for shipping debris – so much so that it’s dubbed ‘the maritime dustbin’.There is a strong chance, therefore, that the objects in fact fell off a ship.Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who announced news of the objects on Thursday, warned: ‘It could just be a container that has fallen off a ship. We just don’t know.’Treacherous weather hampered Thursday’s search effort, but the operation resumed on Friday in much clearer weather, with planes scouring an area slightly to the north of the zone that was combed initially. This is because strong currents may have moved the objects.‘It’s about the most inaccessible spot that you can imagine on the face of the earth, but if there is anything down there, we will find it,’ Mr Abbott told reporters in Papua New Guineau, where he is on a visit.‘We owe it to the families of those people (on board) to do no less.’The pilot from the first RAAF P3 Orion to return from its second sweep of the search area told a press gathering at Pearce RAAF air base: ‘We’ve got a lot of hope.’‘We got out there and had really good weather,’ he said.‘Compared to yesterday the visibility was great, more than 10km visibility, we had a really opportunity to see.‘There are more aircraft out there, still searching, and with any luck we’ll find something shortly. We’ve got a lot of hope.’DAILYMAIL.CO.UK

Malaysian credibility in jet hunt challenged again-By CHRIS BRUMMITT and GILLIAN WONG 4 hours ago-APR 1,14-YahoonewsKUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — It may mean little to investigators that the last words air traffic controllers heard from the lost jetliner were "Good night, Malaysian three-seven-zero," rather than "All right, good night." But to Malaysian officials whose credibility has been questioned almost from the beginning, it means a great deal.Malaysian officials said more than two weeks ago that "All right, good night," were the last words, and that the co-pilot uttered them. They changed the account late Monday and said they are still investigating who it was that spoke. The discrepancy added to the confusion and frustration families of the missing already felt more than three weeks after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared, and as of Tuesday officials had not explained how they got it wrong."This sort of mistake hits at the heart of trust in their communications. If Malaysia is changing what the pilot said, people start thinking, 'What are they going to change next?'" said Hamish McLean, an expert in risk and crisis communication at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia."Information in a crisis is absolutely critical. When we are dealing with such a small amount of information it needs to be handled very carefully," he said.Authorities have been forced on the defensive by the criticism, the most forceful of which has come from a group of Chinese relatives who accuse them of lying about — or even involvement in — the plane's disappearance. In part responding to domestic political criticism, defense minister Hishammuddin Hussein has taken to retweeting supportive comments on Twitter. He has twice in recent days proclaimed that "history would judge us well" over the handling of the crisis. The government's opponents disagree.Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang said the correction set off a "medley of shame, sadness and anger" and strengthened the case for creating an opposition-led parliamentary committee to investigate the government's performance in the search. The communications skills of any government or airline would have been severely tested by the search for the Boeing 777-200 and its 239 passengers and crew. So far not a scrap of debris has been found."There has been very little to tell and a lot of unanswered questions," said Andrew Herdman, director-general of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines. "There is frustration on the lack of new information, frustration over progress with investigations and the search. That frustration is being channeled to the Malaysian authorities but I think it's a bit premature to use that to reflect adversely on how they are doing." Still, the government's handling of information has at times fed perceptions that it was holding back. From the first day of the search, crews were looking far to the west of the plane's last point of contact with air-traffic controllers, but it took about a week for officials to explain that radar had detected the plane in the area."There are some things that I can tell you and some things that I can't," Malaysia's civil aviation chief said cryptically in the early days of the search."That was a terrible, terrible response," said Lyall Mercer, the principal of Australian-based Mercer PR, a public relations company. "It says to the families that 'we know things that we are not going to share' and that 'something else is more important than you'."The piece of information that families most want to hear — whether their relatives are alive or dead — has remained impossible to say with finality, creating a dilemma for the government. On March 24, it tried to address that. Malaysia Airlines officials met families in Kuala Lumpur and Beijing and sent a text message to others saying "we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived."At a news conference half an hour later, Prime Minister Najib Razak was less direct. He said with "deep sadness and regret" that the plane's last known position was "a remote location, far from any possible landing sites," and that the flight "ended" in the southern Indian Ocean.Sarah Bacj, a 48-year-old American expatriate teacher whose boyfriend, Philip Wood, was on the flight, said the decision by Malaysia Airlines to inject some certainty into the fate of the passengers was a mistake. Until then, she said she thought the Malaysian government had acted responsibly, but the text message "totally violated my trust.""I fell off the cliff," Bacj said. "The way the text message came, I expected proof. That they had found the bodies, or that they had found confirmed wreckage, or something ... but they didn't actually tell us anything at all. The only thing they did was make a judgment statement about evidence — unconfirmed evidence, mind you."The final words from the cockpit, and who said them, are of interest not only because there are few other clues to the disappearance, but because the communication occurred just a minute before the plane's transponders were shut off. The words were in English, as aviation communications are around the world.PR experts and professionals said the important thing now is to try and give the families as much information as possible, before the media gets hold of it, and to keep paying attention to them even when the media gaze had drifted. On Tuesday, the Malaysian government announced that technical experts from Malaysia, China and Australia would brief the families in a closed-door session in Kuala Lumpur._______Associated Press writer Eileen Ng in Kuala Lumpur contributed to this report.

Nato to keep expanding, suspends Russia ties
Today @ 19:52-APR 1,14-EUOBSERVER-By Andrew Rettman

BRUSSELS - Nato states have said the alliance will keep on expanding despite Russia’s protests, while freezing most co-operation with Russia over the Ukraine crisis.“We reaffirm that, in accordance with our policy, the alliance’s door remains open to new members in the future,” foreign ministers from the 28 Nato countries said in a joint statement marking the anniversary of former enlargements in Brussels on Tuesday (1 April). They added in a second communique that “we have decided to suspend all practical civilian and military co-operation between Nato and Russia” because Russia “gravely breached the trust upon which our co-operation must be based” by invading Ukraine. The partial suspension will allow for ad-hoc meetings with Russia’s Nato ambassador, however. The suspension will also be reviewed in June.Outgoing Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen added in an op-ed published in several media the same day that “any European state in a position to further the principles of the alliance and to contribute to the security of the north Atlantic area can apply to join. We stand by that principle.”He listed Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and the former Soviet republic of Georgia as countries which aspire to join.He did not mention Ukraine. But the foreign ministers said: “Nato and Ukraine will intensify co-operation and promote defence reforms through capacity building and capability development programmes. Nato allies will also reinforce the Nato Liaison Office in Kiev with additional experts.”The meeting comes as Russian troops continue to occupy Crimea and to mass on Ukraine’s eastern borders. Media reports on Monday indicated some Russian troops had started to pull back. But Rasmussen told press on Tuesday he could not confirm this. The ministers’ meeting also comes ahead of a Nato summit in Cardiff, Wales, in September.Nato at a previous summit in Bucharest in 2008 declined to offer a so-called Membership Action Plan to Georgia and Ukraine due to French and German concerns over Russia relations. For some, such as former Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko, who recently spoke to EUobserver in Brussels, the move was a “huge mistake” which opened the door to Russia’s invasion of Georgia the same year, and now Ukraine. For the Russian foreign ministry, which published a statement on Tuesday, the attempts to pull Ukraine closer to Nato caused "a freezing of Russian-Ukrainian political contacts, a headache between Nato and Russia and ... division in Ukrainian society". Despite the Nato suspension of Russia ties, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and Poland at a separate meeting in Weimar, Germany, on Monday and Tuesday, said the EU should keep listening to Russia."We propose EU-Russia talks with Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia about the consequences of the EU association agreements," they said, referring to EU political and free trade pacts due to be finalised by June.An EU diplomat noted the talks would take place at the level of senior officials and would cover technical questions on the compatability of EU free trade arrangements with Russia’s Customs Union.Marcin Wojciechowski, the Polish foreign ministers’ spokesman, told EUobserver it would be an “over-interpretaion” to say the talks could see Russia veto further progress on EU ties.

Extra US troops in Romania

With Russian military drills in the Baltic region also raising security concerns in Nato’s eastern members, Tuesday’s Nato meeting confirmed “Nato’s cohesion and commitment to deterrence and collective defence against any threat of aggression to the alliance.”Denmark and the US have already sent extra F16 fighter jets to the region, while Germany said it is ready to send Awacs surveillance planes. The US is also planning to send 600 more troops and extra planes to Romania, which borders Moldova and its Russian-occupied breakaway region of Transniestria. But for his part, Polish PM Donald Tusk told press in Warsaw on Tuesday the new deployment is taking too long."We are gaining something step by step, but the pace of Nato increasing its military presence for sure could be faster … This is a unsatisfactory result for us,” he noted, Reuters reports.

As Russia growls, Swedes, Finns eye defence options, NATO
By Alistair Scrutton and Sakari Suoninen 3 hours ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

STOCKHOLM/HELSINKI (Reuters) - When Russian warplanes staged a mock bombing run on Sweden last year, air defences were caught napping. It was the middle of the night and no Swedish planes were scrambled.Instead, Danish jets belonging to NATO's Baltic mission based in Lithuania, took to the air to shadow the Russians. The discussion that incident triggered over Sweden's ability to defend itself has grown with Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine. As in neighbour and fellow EU member Finland, Swedes wonder whether to seek shelter in the U.S.-led NATO alliance, abandoning Stockholm's two centuries of formal neutrality.Sweden has talked of a "doctrinal shift" in defence policy. In Helsinki, where "Finlandisation" became a Cold War byword for self-imposed neutrality driven by fear of a powerful neighbour, the government has talked of an "open debate" on joining NATO.Talk of NATO underscores anxieties that feed calls for more defence cooperation and spending. But membership seems distant, with voters in both countries sceptical of the benefits, and wary of the costs of taking on new international commitments. Both nations have a history of dealing with Moscow in their own particular ways. Sweden's loss of Finland to Russia in the time of Napoleon prompted it to give up on war and armed pacts.Finland, which won independence during Russia's revolution of 1917 but nearly lost it fighting the Soviet Union in World War Two, kept close to the West economically and politically during the Cold War but avoided confrontation with Moscow.Like Sweden, it joined the European Union only in 1995.For all the scepticism about NATO, however, worries have been growing in Scandinavia since Russia's action in Crimea.Russian troops held exercises on the Finnish border this week. A former aide to Vladimir Putin made waves by saying that, after ex-Soviet Ukraine, the president might eye Finland next. Both Nordic nations may bolster defence spending and forge a closer military partnership between themselves as they face Russia across the Baltic and along Finland's long land border. So far neither has risked finding out what Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev meant when he said last year that Finnish or Swedish NATO membership would force Moscow to "respond".

TIME FOR SECURITY BLANKET?

As the Russian bombing practice showed when NATO jets scrambled into action over Sweden, both nations could hope for some protection from EU allies and the United States even without joining the defence alliance. Both Swedish and Finnish armed forces cooperate with the other three Nordic states which are in NATO - Denmark, Norway and Iceland - and both have cooperated with NATO in Afghanistan.Swedish jets helped Libyan rebels in 2011 and in March joined a NATO exercise in Norway, near the Russian border.Still, some politicians are already making noises they may one day have to go further."I think it would be good to have an open debate about NATO already now and I hope that everyone would participate in it, even those who oppose the membership," Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen told online newspaper Verkkouutiset last week.In a sign of the times, while Finland cut unemployment and child benefits in a March budget, defence got off lightly.Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Jan Bjorklund called last month for a "doctrinal shift" in defence policy after the Crimea crisis. Calling Russia "a bit more erratic and unpredictable", Finance Minister Anders Borg called for "a substantial scaling up" of defence spending.Borg's statement came after Sweden moved two fighter jets to Gotland, a strategically important Baltic island where spending cuts in recent years had all but eliminated defences.Sweden's defence spending fell to 1.2 percent of GDP in 2012, according to the Stockholm-based SIPRI think tank, compared with 2 percent at the turn of the century.Rather than join NATO, the Ukraine crisis may see Sweden and Finland more active in the Nordic Defence Cooperation - NORDEFCO - with the three Nordic states which are in the alliance.

GETTING MORE INVOLVED

Even as some analysts see the "Finlandisation" of Ukraine - former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger has suggested Kiev follow Cold War-era Helsinki in cooperating with the West while avoiding "institutional hostility" toward Moscow - 21st-century Finland has shed some inhibitions about Russia. It has joined in EU sanctions against Moscow and politicians have criticised the annexation of Crimea.Katainen told a German newspaper last month that the term Finlandisation - coined by West German critics of their own government's perceived passivity toward Soviet threats - was a misleading one. Finland was "not neutral" as it was an EU member, he said - while adding that this did not stop his government from maintaining excellent relations with Russia.Finland been cautious about imposing sanctions on Moscow over Ukraine. But that may be more due to worries about the effect on its own economy rather than fear of upsetting its massive neighbour. Many Finns view Russia with suspicion and battles against Stalin's Red Army form a key part of their national identity. But there is also a sense among voters that Finland would be left to fight alone, whether in a defence alliance or not.Sweden, too, has long taken a standoffish position in international affairs, avoiding even the world wars of the last century. After the Russian bombing rehearsal, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt played down its importance, saying Russia had "neither the will nor the capacity to attack Swedish territory".But tensions over Ukraine have come as Sweden and Finland have grown more critical of Putin. Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, who first became prominent in the 1980s probing Soviet submarine incursions in Swedish waters, is one of the most vocal figures in the EU against what he calls Russian expansionism.

VOTERS SCEPTICAL

Polls show a clear majority oppose NATO membership in Sweden and Finland. About a third of Swedes favour joining the alliance and only around a fifth of Finns."There is no public support for NATO membership and Sweden has greater freedom to act if we're not part of NATO," said Peter Hultqvist, who chairs the parliamentary defence committee."There is a belief that our tradition of staying outside military alliances is the best way to preserve peace," he said, before adding a note of caution: "We must strive for an improvement of our military strength."When the ex-Soviet Baltic states joined NATO in 2004 - part of an expansion that saw the alliance take in most of Moscow's Cold War satellites in the Warsaw Pact - they did so without provoking more than a rhetorical reaction from Russia. Some thought it would encourage the two Nordic states to follow suit.Though they did not take that chance, some security analysts argue that NATO membership could now benefit the Nordic states in ways that go beyond the threat of military aggression. They point to a cyber attack, or a risk of gas supplies being cut. However, few see an immediate prospect of NATO accession."Crimea has at least furthered the argument that there should not be any further reductions in military expenditure," said Ian Anthony of the Stockholm International Peace Research Programme (SIPRI). "But in terms of NATO, the balance sheet is in the direction of keeping things as they are."Even Finland's European affairs minister Alexander Stubb, one of the few high-profile politicians in Helsinki who favours NATO membership, said now, at a time of particularly fraught relations with Moscow, was not the right time."One should not enter when the weather is bad, but when the sun is shining," he said. "And that is not the case now."(Added reporting by Johan Sennero in Stockholm and Andrius Sytas in Vilnius; Editing by Alastair Macdonald)

West stumbles as autocratic force trumps economics
By David Rohde 2 hours ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

(Reuters) - A quarter-century after the fall of the Soviet Union, authoritarian rulers such as Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad are showing they can and will defy international norms, suppress dissent and use military force. American policymakers are struggling with how to respond."It's a big philosophical question about how to deal with a strong state with anti-Western and autocratic proclivities," said Michael McFaul, the most recent American ambassador to Moscow. "I would say on that score we are kind of confused as a country."Citing the sweeping unpopularity of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, American officials have embraced economic sanctions as their primary means of pressuring foreign governments. In an interconnected, 21st-century global economy, President Barack Obama argues, economic sanctions are more powerful than ever.If Russia continues on its current course, Obama warned last week, "the isolation will deepen, sanctions will increase and there will be more consequences for the Russian economy."He may be proven right. Over the course of 2014, the threat of economic sanctions may result in Putin backing down in Crimea and Ukraine. And historic sanctions against Iran - which slashed oil sales and cut the country off from the world banking system - could produce an accord that halts Iran's nuclear program. If not, a 16th-century Machiavellian truism will re-assert its dominance: The party most willing to decisively use force will prevail over a noncommittal opponent."What we've seen with Assad and Putin is a willingness to smile at international norms and pursue power politics regardless of the cost," said Andrew Weiss, a Russia expert at the Carnegie Endowment and former official in the George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations. "And if the West is not united and America's interests are not immediately threatened, the response immediately becomes attenuated."How to respond has already become an issue in the 2016 presidential race. In the weeks since Putin sent Russian troops into Crimea, Republican senators Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Paul Ryan all criticized Obama's response. But none of them called for an American intervention in Ukraine.

ECONOMIC CONNECTIONS

Fiona Hill, a Russia expert at the Brookings Institution and a former National Intelligence Council official, said those who believed the collapse of the Soviet Union signified the triumph of Western democratic capitalism were deluding themselves. A large number of Russians remained deeply skeptical of Western norms."It was only a very small elite around Yeltsin who were buying this," she said. "Too many people (Westerners) saw what they wanted to see, rather than what was happening."Then the global financial crisis strengthened a perception in parts of the world that Western democracy was failing - both politically and economically, Hill added.Shadi Hamid, a Middle East expert at the Brookings Institution's Saban Center, said Obama's decision to not intervene in Syria after last September's chemical weapons attack created a perception of American weakness. Strongmen, such as Egypt's military ruler, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, had been emboldened."They think they can get away with more than ever," Hamid said. "And this is tied to a growing sense of weakness under the Obama administration, whether it's fair or unfair."Obama administration officials deny that. They argue that another costly intervention in the Middle East would further weaken the American economy. And they contend that economic and technological strength - not brute force alone - will be the dominant source of power for decades to come.Steven Pifer, a former American ambassador to Ukraine and now a fellow at the Brookings Institution, argued that economic inter-connectedness will have an impact on Putin. Pifer said the Russian leader knows he needs trade with the outside world."While the West may rule out the military option," Pifer wrote in an email, "it has other tools, including political isolation and financial sanctions that could inflict serious pain on the Russian economy."Weiss, the Carnegie expert, argued that Russia and Syria represent vastly different situations. Russia is far more economically connected to the world than Syria, he said. And Putin is not accused of killing thousands of his people and displacing millions in a bid to hold onto power, like Assad. But Weiss said he was unsure that economic sanctions alone would stop the Russian leader. "He's thinking about things in a very shrewd, pure-power way."What leverage do we have against Putin?" he asked. "That's why people are somewhat stumped about what to do."In the case of Iran, years of false claims from officials regarding its nuclear program finally prompted Europe to agree sweeping economic sanctions that rebounded on Europe more than on the United States. Barring a Russian military incursion deeper into Ukraine, "the Europeans are not willing to go farther," he said. "They're happy to compartmentalize and go back to business as usual."

"THEY WANT IT MORE"

Hill compared the current world today with the 19th century, when trade was vast but nations still clashed." The world was incredibly connected," she said. "And it didn't produce any greater political outcomes. You remember a lot of gunboat diplomacy."She said that economic interdependence flows both ways."There is mutual dependency here," she added. "There is mutual leverage. We can use it and they can use it."Experts said that for Putin, Crimea's port at Sevastopol was vital. In Egypt, Sisi believes he is fighting an existential threat with the Muslim Brotherhood. In Washington, American officials disagree over whether core American interests are at stake, and the autocrats know it."There is a calculation there," Hamid said. "They know that they want it more than we do."(Edited by Sara Ledwith)

PEACE TALKS OVER-Kerry Cancels Abbas Meeting as PA Requests To Join UN Agencies
Abbas breaches peace talk conditions by making unilateral bid for international recognition; Kerry cancels upcoming visit to Ramallah.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 4/1/2014, 8:18 PM-Israelnationalnews

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas breached the conditions of the peace talks Tuesday by signing a request to join several United Nations (UN) agencies.Abbas obligated himself to refrain from such unilateral moves for international recognition during the course of the peace talks, restarted last July by US Secretary of State John Kerry."The Palestinian leadership has unanimously approved a decision to seek membership of 15 UN agencies and international treaties, beginning with the Fourth Geneva Convention," Abbas said on TV following the signing, reports AFP.The PA chief also threatened that if Israel did not release the fourth batch of 26 convicted terrorists set to be released as part of ongoing talks, the PA would "immediately" seek membership in another 63 international agencies."The demands (for membership) will be sent immediately," declared Abbas, but added "This is not a move against America, or any other party - it is our right, and we agreed to suspend it for nine months."Despite that insistence, in the last few minutes it has been reported that John Kerry cancelled his Wednesday visit to meet Abbas, in a clear sign of Washington's displeasure at the move and perhaps the clearest sign yet that the faltering talks are rapidly imploded."We are no longer travelling tomorrow," a senior State Department said.Kerry had been set to meet with the PA leader in Ramallah, after a meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday took longer than planned, preventing Kerry's scheduled meeting with Abbas. The unilateral move by the PA effectively torpedoes the peace talks, which were set to continue until April 29, and which have been stalling of late amid Abbas's consistent refusal to recognize Israel as the Jewish state.Abbas set conditions on the extension of peace talks, demanding a Jewish construction freeze in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem, as well as the release of the fourth and final batch of terrorists promised to the PA by Israel as a "gesture."Israel at least temporarily refused the last batch of releases this Saturday, given the wide-spread opposition to the highly unpopular move and the lack of progress in the talks.

'Blackmail'

Just on Tuesday, reports revealed that the US offered to release Jonathan Pollard, now in his 29th year in an American jail for charges of spying for Israel, in a bid to save the talks. The offer for Pollard would have come in exchange for Israel's release of the fourth batch of terrorists, plus over 400 other Arab terrorists, including arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti, and a temporary construction freeze in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. However, in a dramatic move Pollard waived a parole hearing on Tuesday to protest the release, given his opposition to such a deal that would set Arab terrorists free.Meanwhile a spokesman for Abbas's Fatah party revealed two weeks ago on official PA TV that the PA is using its non-member observer status in the United Nations (UN), given in 2012, as a "weapon" to "blackmail" Israel into releasing terrorists.Given the UN status, the PA has been "waving around" the threat of going to the International Criminal Court for around two years according to the spokesman: "we've obtained the release of the prisoners, we blackmailed [Israel], that is, in quotation marks, and we've taken important positions because we have a card that we're waving around."

Herzog: Palestinians have no unilateral alternative to talks-Opposition leader also says Syrian sources have expressed ‘extreme concern’ over country’s future-By Elhanan Miller April 1, 2014, 6:57 pm-The Times of Israel

Palestinians cannot fulfill their national aspirations through a unilateral appeal to join international institutions, the head of Israel’s opposition said on Tuesday.Speaking at a conference in Jerusalem titled “Israel, US and the Middle East: New Visions,” organized by Israeli left-wing research center Molad and the Center for American Progress, a Washington-based progressive think tank, Labor Party chairman Isaac Herzog addressed the possibility of Palestinian unilateral action if Israel fails to accept Palestinian preconditions for extending talks beyond April.“[PA leader Mahmoud] Abbas should understand that there’s no unilateral avenue,” Herzog told the audience. “He has no alternative in any UN forum. It will bring no solace to his people.”Herzog added that the only viable option at the moment is “pressing both sides to negotiate.”The Israeli opposition leader was speaking as Palestinian leaders were preparing to discuss an American offer for extending negotiations, presented by Secretary of State John Kerry to chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat on Monday evening, and reported to include the release of American-Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard.Herzog reiterated his commitment to support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in any bid to bolster peace talks with the Palestinians, noting that he heads a Knesset “peace bloc” encompassing 59 members of Knesset outside the governing Likud party willing to endorse continued negotiations.“There is a clear, unequivocal majority [in the Knesset] for peace,” he said. The Arab Peace Initiative, first presented by Saudi Arabia in 2002 and endorsed by the Arab League in 2007, should be the basis for future talks, Herzog argued.“We need the Arab League as a partner for future progress,” he said, calling for a “full fledged” implementation of the plan.Referring to the security issue following a visit earlier today to the Israeli border with Syria on the Golan Heights, Herzog said that security should not be considered a subject associated exclusively with the Israeli right. He mentioned historic Israeli shortcomings in ensuring proper security arrangements in two cases: the IDF withdrawal from the Philadelphi Route on the border between the Gaza Strip and Sinai (which Israel withdrew from in September 2005, leaving the area under the control of the Egyptian army); and the security provisions in the Sinai Peninsula under the Camp David Peace Accords, which Israel signed with Egypt in March 1979.Briefly addressing the situation in Syria, Herzog said the country now faces a choice between “bad and worse” Islamists. He said that Syrian opposition leaders with whom he has been in touch over the past few years have voiced grave concern over the country’s future.

Abbas signs Palestine request to join 15 UN bodies-Officials on both sides say move doesn’t end talks; PA sources: It’s a response to Israeli refusal to release prisoners-By Yifa Yaakov April 1, 2014, 8:18 pm 31-The Times of Israel

In an apparent breach of understandings with the US and Israel, and with a proposed agreement to extend peace talks awaiting a Palestinian response, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday evening signed an official appeal to join 15 UN bodies. At a PLO meeting in Ramallah, Abbas president formally requested membership in the international organizations for the “State of Palestine.”“The Palestinian leadership has unanimously approved a decision to seek membership of 15 UN agencies and international treaties, beginning with the Fourth Geneva Convention,” Abbas said on television after signing the demand. Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reporter Derek Stoffel tweeted Tuesday evening that the Palestinian Authority had made the move in response to Israel’s unwillingness to fulfill an obligation to release a fourth round of Palestinian prisoners, some of them Arab Israelis.Stoffel quoted sources in Abbas’s office as saying the peace process would continue regardless of Tuesday’s move. Officials in Jerusalem were also quoted by Channel 2 news as saying that the move didn’t necessarily signal an end to the talks. After the announcement was made, a meeting scheduled for Wednesday between Abbas and US Secretary of State John Kerry was canceled, Palestinian sources said.“We salute the American efforts. But Israel is procrastinating,” Abbas reportedly said before signing a series of documents to apply to the UN bodies. The Palestinian leadership was convened on Tuesday evening to discuss a tripartite deal between the US, Israel and the PA, which would see Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard freed from a US prison, reportedly in exchange for a partial settlement construction freeze and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. The identity of the prisoners to be released would be decided partly by Israel and partly by the Palestinian Authority.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with senior Likud party members on Tuesday to elaborate on the details of the plan and enlist their support. An official close to the negotiations said earlier Tuesday that Kerry was close to a deal that would rescue the faltering Mideast peace talks. The deal would not include a freeze on construction in Jewish settlements in the West Bank as the Palestinians have demanded but would envisage Israel committing to show “great restraint” and not issue new housing tenders. The Palestinians gave the emerging proposal a cool reception, saying it fell far short of their demands for a complete halt to settlement construction and the freeing of 1,000 prisoners of their choosing.White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday evening that the US had yet to decide to free Pollard.“There are obviously a lot of things happening in that arena and I’m not going to get ahead of where we are,” he said in a press briefing. “The president has not made a decision to release Jonathan Pollard”Times of Israel staff, AP and AFP contributed to this report.

Israel reissues tenders for 708 East Jerusalem homes-Plans for apartments offered under more attractive terms to appeal to contractors who previously shunned project-By AFP and Times of Israel staff April 1, 2014, 6:21 pm

Israel reissued Tuesday a call for tenders for homes in East Jerusalem, in a move that could hike tensions as Washington struggles to salvage crisis-hit peace talks. The Israel Lands Authority issued the tenders for living units in the Gilo neighborhood of the capital, which is located beyond the 1967 lines and was annexed by Israel.Peace Now’s Hagit Ofran confirmed the tenders were for 708 homes in Gilo, saying “the Housing Ministry is trying to forcefully undermine the peace process… and [US Secretary of State] John Kerry’s efforts to promote it.“This morning, the Israel Land Authority announced this project, which is actually a renewed tender which was published (in two parts) last year but found no bidders,” she told AFP.Army Radio, which first reported the news, said the tenders had been reissued under conditions significantly better than last year, making it more likely they would be taken up.The tenders were first issued six months ago but had no takers from contractors.Israeli NGO Ir Amim, which supports an “equitable” sharing of Jerusalem between Jews and Arabs, described the tenders as “a poke in the eye of both the Palestinians and the Americans,” the radio said. The development came amid intensive efforts to keep afloat the foundering talks between Israel, the Palestinians. Among the chief demands by Palestinians is a halt to construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Pollard Waives Parole Hearing To Oppose Deal-Parole commissioner reveals Pollard refuses hearing on same day that deal for his release in exchange for Arab terrorists is revealed.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 4/1/2014, 7:46 PM-Israelnationalnews

According to a member of the US Parole Commission, Jonathan Pollard, now in his 29th year in a US jail on charges of spying for Israel, has waived a planned parole hearing. The move is seen as a protest of reports of a deal in which he would be released in exchange for over 400 Arab terrorists. The commissioner, Patricia Smoot, noted that the parole hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, reports ABC News. Parole Commission Administrator Stephen Husk added that the hearing was to take place at the federal prison in Butner, North Carolina, where Pollard is being held. The surprising move comes the same Tuesday that a US offer to release Pollard was revealed, in exchange for the release of over 400 Israeli-held Arab terrorists, including arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti. Further, Israel would obligate itself to a partial construction freeze in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem, in a move to save the failing peace talks.Pollard's refusal to attend the hearing was reportedly meant to express his opposition to the deal that would set Arab terrorists free.Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) criticized the deal on Tuesday, noting that Pollard himself has opposed a "shameless" deal like this before, saying he isn't prepared to be released if it meant freedom for Arab terrorists.Attorney Ze'ev Desberg, who himself lost a sister and brother-in-law to Arab terrorism, stated on Tuesday that it was Pollard's right to refuse to cooperate in the deal that would free terrorists. The proposed deal was also sharply criticized by Judea and Samaria's Yesha Council as being a "disgraceful" case of "Arab blackmail and American bribery." Leading Israeli rabbis similarly slammed the proposal, arguing that the release of terrorists is forbidden by Jewish law. They further criticized the US for holding Pollard "hostage."

PA Admits 'Blackmailing' Israel To Free Terrorists-Spokesman of Abbas's party reveals use of UN recognition to 'blackmail' releases; confirms Judea Samaria council accusations.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 4/1/2014, 7:20 PM-Israelnationalnews

A spokesman for Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction has admitted that the PA is "blackmailing" Israel into releasing terrorist prisoners. The revelation comes as the US is reportedly attempting to push Israel to release another 400 terrorists to continue peace talks.Spokesman Ahmad Assaf revealed on official PA TV two weeks ago, on March 19, that the PA is using its non-member observer status in the United Nations (UN), given in 2012, as a "weapon" against Israel. Palestinian Media Watch translated the comments.Given the UN status, the PA has been "waving around" the threat of going to the International Criminal Court for around two years according to Assaf: "we've obtained the release of the prisoners, we blackmailed [Israel], that is, in quotation marks, and we've taken important positions because we have a card that we're waving around."Senior Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Official Nabil Shaath revealed last November that the PA is only staying in the peace talks to secure the release of the 104 terrorists promised by Israel as a "gesture" to restart peace talks last July. So far 78 have been released, but the last release set for last Saturday has been put on hold.Shaath reiterated his comments early last December, saying the PA had conformed to the conditions of the peace talks and not pressed for further international recognition at the UN until then only to secure the release of the remaining terrorists.Just last week the PA threatened to take unilateral moves for international recognition this week if the last batch of terrorist releases didn't go through; it has yet to follow through on its threats.Assaf's admission of "blackmail" is revealed the same Tuesday that Judea and Samaria's Yesha Council slammed the new US proposal to free Jonathan Pollard, in US jail for 29 years over charges of spying for Israel, in exchange for over 400 terrorists and a partial construction freeze in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem." The submission to Arab blackmail and American bribery through the use of Pollard is a disgrace," argued the Yesha Council.

Abbas: Palestinians to seek further UN recognition
By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH and KARIN LAUB 13 minutes ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — In a surprise move that could jeopardize U.S. peace efforts, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday resumed a bid for further Palestinian recognition by the United Nations, despite a promise to suspend such efforts during nine months of negotiations with Israel.Abbas signed "State of Palestine" applications for 15 U.N. agencies in a hastily convened ceremony televised live from his West Bank headquarters. Abbas said he was compelled to take action because Israel had failed to carry out a promised released of veteran Palestinian prisoners."We will apply to 15 agencies and conventions immediately," Abbas said after leading members of his Fatah movement and the Palestine Liberation Organization supported the decision unanimously by a show of hands.Abbas insisted that he is still interested in negotiating a deal with Israel on the terms of Palestinian statehood, saying he and his aides "will continue our efforts to reach a peaceful solution through negotiations."Such talks resumed in late July, after a push by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, and were to last for nine months, until the end of April. During this period, Abbas promised to suspend his U.N. bid, while Israel was to release 104 veteran Palestinian prisoners in four stages. The Palestinians say the fourth group of prisoners was due to be released by the end of March, and that Israel failed to live up to its promise. There was no immediate reaction from Israel and from Kerry, who has been mediating between Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the past year.It was not immediately clear if Abbas' decision was a negotiating tactic or signaled a fundamental shift in strategy. In his brief comments Tuesday, the Palestinian leader said he is "not seeking a conflict with anyone, particularly the U.S."It was also uncertain if a meeting between Abbas and Kerry, tentatively arranged for Wednesday, would still take place.Abbas' decision, meanwhile, also threw into doubt claims that a deal was emerging that would have extended Israel-Palestinian talks beyond an April 29 deadline and included the release of imprisoned American Jewish spy Jonathan Pollard.

Less than a week after President Barack Obama discussed immigration reform with Pope Francis in the Vatican, a group of Catholic leaders has gone to the U.S-Mexico border to raise awareness about the human aspect of immigration-merope ippiotis-ROME

Today at midday (Eastern time), a group of U.S. bishops, led by Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley, are saying Mass at the border between Mexico and the United States in Nogales, Arizona, “on behalf of the close to 6,000 migrants who have died in the U.S. desert since 1998,” a USCCB’s news release reads. A press conference will be held after the mass.“The purpose of the trip is to highlight the human suffering caused by a broken immigration system, an aspect of the national immigration debate which is often ignored,” the USCCB news release says. The bishops are following the example of Pope Francis who recalled the tragic deaths of immigrants during a mass on the Italian island of Lampedusa last July."America at its best is not the bigotry and xenophobia of the no nothings, but the generous welcome of the New Colossus, that mighty woman with a Torah, the Statue of Liberty, the Mother of Exiles..." Boston's Archbishop, Seán Patrick O'Malley, said in his homily. "Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me; I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” he concluded, quoting Emma Lazarus, adding: "We must be vigilant that that lamp continues to burn brightly."During the mass, Cardinal O'Malley, along with other bishops, gave Communion to faithful on the Mexican side of the border fence. The USCCB website informs that the following US bishops said they planned to attend the mass: His Eminence Sean Cardinal O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston; Most Reverend Eusebio Elizondo, Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle and Chairman, USCCB Committee on Migration; Most Reverend Gerald F. Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson; Most Reverend John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City; Most Reverend Mark Seitz, Bishop of El Paso; Most Reverend Oscar Cantu, Bishop of Las Cruces, NM;Most Reverend Ricardo Ramirez, Bishop Emeritus of Las Cruces, NM;Most Reverend Luis Zarama, Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta.

Guinea's Ebola victims wait for death
By Mouctar Bah 1 hour ago-APR 1,14-YYahoonews

The makeshift clinic in Gueckedou, a market city of 220,000 people near the Liberia and Sierra Leone borders, is on the front line of Guinea's increasingly desperate struggle to contain one of the worst outbreaks of haemorrhagic fever in history. The medical charity Doctors Without Borders, commonly known by its French initials MSF, has set up two corrugated iron buildings in a tent village, currently with 20 beds, and a capacity for 50 patients. One of the buildings houses suspected cases, while in the other medics care for patients confirmed to have Ebola, including two who died on Monday.Rose, aged 12, has been among the suspected cases for six days but has just tested positive for Ebola and is being moved to join her mother and aunt in the other building where the prospect of making it out alive is rather more grim.It is rare for the worst strains of Ebola to leave behind survivors -- as many as nine in 10 of those infected in previous outbreaks have died -- and the epidemic has claimed at least 80 lives across Guinea since the start of the year.Patients suffer a particularly unpleasant death, succumbing to severe fever and muscle pain before their organs break down.In the worst cases the agony is accompanied by profuse, unstoppable internal and external bleeding." Rose will probably die soon and then it will definitely be my turn," sobbed Ren, 18, a family member admitted to the suspect cases building two days ago.Pascal Piguet, an MSF logistics expert, describes the tough dilemma involved in transferring Rose to join her mother and aunt, "where she will see them die".The alternative, though, was to keep her where she was and risk other patients getting infected." You must choose the lesser evil," he said.-- Biohazard suits -Relatives, sitting on orange chairs set up in the centre as they wait fearfully for news of loved ones, present another security risk for medics battling the highly contagious outbreak."Our staff are aware that they must keep a safe distance. ... Once a person gets up, they discreetly spray the chair to prevent others from getting infected," says Piguet. There are 30 Guineans and foreigners working in the clinic, dressed for the most part in blue or green uniforms, or civilian clothes. But those who have contact with the patients -- treating, feeding, washing or even just talking to them -- are kitted out from head to toe in sealed biohazard suits with gloves, goggles, masks and boots. In a mobile lab that was opened at the centre on Sunday, specialists from Europe are able to test swabs taken from patients in situ, speeding up a process that had previously been painstakingly slow, with samples sent to scientists abroad.Their work is backed up by technicians at a second laboratory set up in the capital Conakry by a team from the Pasteur Institute in Dakar. To date, 22 cases of Ebola have been identified in samples taken from 122 suspected cases of viral haemorrhagic fever.Five strains of Ebola -- four of them deadly to humans -- have been observed since the first outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976.The Guinean government says the most virulent Zaire species has been detected in the latest epidemic. But other viruses may be playing a role, according to epidemiologists, including Lassa, another haemorrhagic fever endemic to west Africa.

2014-03-31 03:21 UTC  R3 (Strong) Event from Region 2017-NOAA space weather

Region 2017 produced an impulsive or short-lived R3 (Strong) Solar Flare Radio Blackout event at 1748 UTC (1:48 p.m. EDT) on March 29th.  There are several coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in play at this time, including the one from this event, and G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming is expected on April 2nd as a result.  Stay tuned for updates.

The Ovation Aurora Model Goes Operational: The aurora is highly correlated with a number of space weather impacts on systems making forecasting the location and intensity of the aurora important. Satellite navigation (GPS) errors increase. HF radio communication is blocked. And electric power lines receive unwanted extra current. For the last 18 months, the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center and the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center have been testing the Ovation Prime model, developed at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab. Based on the current solar wind conditions upstream of Earth, this model forecasts where and how intense the aurora will be at Earth approximately 30 minutes later. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has transitioned this model into operations thus providing more consistent and reliable products for customers. You can find the new operational Ovation model site here.

China's Xi seeks peace in Europe but side-steps Ukraine
By Robin Emmott 5 hours ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

BRUGES, Belgium (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping told Europe on Tuesday that Beijing opposed intervention in other countries' affairs but he declined to directly criticize Russia for its annexation of Crimea.Xi also assured European leaders that China was a close ally committed to the continent's peace and prosperity.Ending his European tour with a speech in the Belgian city of Bruges, Xi said he considered China's relationship with the European Union as Beijing's priority and praised its commitment to a lasting peace that China would also seek to uphold. He said that while the memory of foreign invasion and bullying had never been erased from the minds of the Chinese people, "I have come to Europe to build a bridge across the Eurasian continent."Xi's speech to dignitaries including the Belgian king and prime minister were his only public remarks during three days in Belgium.Though short on specifics, Xi, the first Chinese leader to visit the EU headquarters in Brussels, promised that Beijing is focused on ensuring non-intervention in other countries' affairs - an apparent reference to Russia, which is seeking to sell natural gas to China.Beijing has been cautious not to be drawn into the struggle between Russia and the West over Ukraine's future but Xi suggested it would not encourage Russian aggression in Ukraine."China follows a policy of peace. China is committed to non-interference in other countries," Xi said.China is a central player in the Ukraine crisis but has frustrated the European Union with its silence over Russia's annexation of Crimea, abstaining in a United Nations Security Council vote condemning the move on March 21.At an EU-China summit in Brussels on Monday, the European Union's top two officials, Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso, pressed Xi on Russia and the Chinese leader said he "believed in the territorial integrity" of countries, according to EU officials briefed on the meeting. The EU has offered a trade and aid deal to Ukraine to bring it closer to the union, angering Moscow, which considers the country its own and sought to include it in a Russian-led Eurasian customs union.Ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich rejected that trade deal in November in favor of cash from Moscow, triggering protests that led to bloodshed in Kiev and his flight to Russia.

FREE-TRADE DREAM

Xi used his speech to reiterate China's desire for a multi-billion euro free-trade deal with the EU - a long-held Chinese goal but one that divides Europe because of China's policy of helping its state-owned enterprises to dominate foreign markets.Europe is China's most important trading partner, while for the EU, China is second only to the United States. Trade between the EU and China has doubled since 2003 to more than 1 billion euros ($1.4 billion) a day.But the bilateral relationship has been bedeviled by a series of trade rows ranging from steel and wine to solar panels. China's ambition to produce more sophisticated products to compete with European goods also unnerves some Europeans."China and European may seem far apart geographically but we are in the same time and the same space," Xi said. "We need to build a bridge of growth and of prosperity...and actively explore possibility of a free-trade area."Xi won a pledge from EU officials at the summit to consider such a pact, although the European Union insists that is a long way off and China must first show it is ready to play by international trade rules by agreeing an "investment agreement."Xi's appetite for political and economic reform, coupled with his folksy style and the legacy of his father, a reformist former vice-premier, have raised hopes in Brussels that China is willing to do that.China unveiled its boldest reforms in nearly three decades in November, months after Xi, who is 60, became president.Negotiations towards such an investment accord are underway and should make it easier for European countries to do business in China, a big step that many see as a potential forerunner to a trade deal.European companies complain of poor treatment in China, such as being forced to share sensitive know-how to win access to Chinese funding and local contracts.(Reporting by Robin Emmott; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

MUSLIM NATIONS (SLAUGHTERED BY NUKES FOR COMING AGAINST ISRAEL)

PROVERBS 21:29-31
29 A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.
30 There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.
31 The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.(FOR ISRAEL)

EXODUS 15:1-4
1  Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
2  The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.
3  The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
4  Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.

EZEKIEL 38:1-12
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW)and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages;(ISRAEL) I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil,(OIL IS IN SPOIL) and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8,11-21
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back,(RUSSIA-ARAB MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS) and leave but the sixth part of thee,(5/6TH OR 300 MILLION DEAD RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS I BELIEVE) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers (EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN JORDAN VALLEY) on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog (RUSSIAN) and all his multitude:(ARAB/MUSLIM HORDE) and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(BURIEL SITE OF THE 300 MILLION,RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS)
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13 Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)(EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN THE JORDAN VALLEY)
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.(OF THE ISRAEL-GOD HATERS)
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl,(500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS THREW ISRAEL EVERY SPRING,FALL) and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ARMIES)
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye (MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL) shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.(RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS)
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21 And I (GOD-JESUS) will set my glory among the heathen,(WORLD NATIONS) and all the heathen (WORLD NATIONS) shall see my judgment that I have executed,(AGAINST ISRAELS ENEMIES) and my (GODS) hand that I have laid upon them.(ISRAELS HATER ENEMIES)

JEREMEIAH 49:35-37 (IN IRAN AT THE BUSHEHR OR ARAK NUKE SITE SOME BELIEVE)
35  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam,(IRAN/BUSHEHR NUCLEAR SITE) the chief of their might.(MOST DANGEROUS NUKE SITE IN IRAN)
36  And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven,(IRANIANS SCATTERED OR MASS IMIGARATION) and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.(WORLD IMMIGRATION)
37  For I will cause Elam (IRAN-BUSHEHR NUKE SITE) to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger,(ISRAELS NUKES POSSIBLY) saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:(IRAN AND ITS NUKE SITES DESTROYED)

EZEKIEL 35:3-6,11-15
3  And say unto it, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O mount Seir,(ARABS) I am against thee, and I will stretch out mine hand against thee, and I will make thee most desolate.
4  I will lay thy cities waste, and thou shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
5  Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred,(AGAINST ISRAEL) and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end:
6  Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee.
11  Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will even do according to thine anger, and according to thine envy which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them; and I will make myself known among them, when I have judged thee.
12  And thou shalt know that I am the LORD, and that I have heard all thy blasphemies which thou hast spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, They are laid desolate, they are given us to consume.
13  Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them.
14  Thus saith the Lord GOD; When the whole earth rejoiceth, I will make thee desolate.(ARAB,MUSLIMS)
15  As thou didst rejoice at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do unto thee: thou shalt be desolate, O mount Seir,(ARABS) and all Idumea,(ARAB,MUSLIMS) even all of it: and they shall know that I am the LORD.

ISAIAH 17:1,11-14
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
11  In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.
12  Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations,(USELESS U.N) that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
13  The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14  And behold at evening tide trouble; and before the morning he is not.(ASSAD KILLED IN OVERNIGHT RAID) This is the portion of them that spoil us,(ISRAEL) and the lot of them that rob us.

AMOS 1:5
5  I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden:(IRAQ) and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir,(JORDAN) saith the LORD.

JEREMEIAH 49:23-27
23  Concerning Damascus.(SYRIA) Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea;(WAR SHIPS WITH NUKES COMING ON SYRIA) it cannot be quiet.
24  Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
25  How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
26  Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
27  And I will kindle a fire (NUKES OR BOMBS) in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.(ASSADS PALACES POSSIBLY IN DAMASCUS)

PSALMS 83:3-7
3 They (ARABS,MUSLIMS) have taken crafty counsel against thy people,(ISRAEL) and consulted against thy hidden ones.
4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
5 For they (MUSLIMS) have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:(TREATIES)

Apocalyptic prophecies drive both sides to Syrian battle for end of time
By Mariam Karouny 4 hours ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Conflict in Syria kills hundreds of thousands of people and spreads unrest across the Middle East. Iranian forces battle anti-Shi'ite fighters in Damascus, and the region braces for an ultimate showdown. If the scenario sounds familiar to an anxious world watching Syria's devastating civil war, it resonates even more with Sunni and Shi'ite fighters on the frontlines - who believe it was all foretold in 7th Century prophecies. From the first outbreak of the crisis in the southern city of Deraa to apocalyptic forecasts of a Middle East soaked in blood, many combatants on both sides of the conflict say its path was set 1,400 years ago in the sayings of the Prophet Mohammad and his followers.Among those many thousands of sayings, or hadith, are accounts which refer to the confrontation of two huge Islamic armies in Syria, a great battle near Damascus, and intervention from the north and west of the country. The power of those prophecies for many fighters on the ground means that the three-year-old conflict is more deeply rooted - and far tougher to resolve - than a simple power struggle between President Bashar al-Assad and his rebel foes.Syria's war has killed more than 140,000 people, driven millions from their homes and left many more dependent on aid. Diplomatic efforts, focused on the political rather than religious factors driving the conflict, have made no headway."If you think all these mujahideen came from across the world to fight Assad, you're mistaken," said a Sunni Muslim jihadi who uses the name Abu Omar and fights in one of the many anti-Assad Islamist brigades in Aleppo."They are all here as promised by the Prophet. This is the war he promised - it is the Grand Battle," he told Reuters, using a word which can also be translated as slaughter. On the other side, many Shi'ites from Lebanon, Iraq and Iran are drawn to the war because they believe it paves the way for the return of Imam Mahdi - a descendent of the Prophet who vanished 1,000 years ago and who will re-emerge at a time of war to establish global Islamic rule before the end of the world.According to Shi'ite tradition, an early sign of his return came with the 1979 Iranian revolution, which set up an Islamic state to provide fighters for an army led by the Mahdi to wage war in Syria after sweeping through the Middle East."This Islamic Revolution, based on the narratives that we have received from the prophet and imams, is the prelude to the appearance of the Mahdi," Iranian cleric and parliamentarian Ruhollah Hosseinian said last year.He cited comments by an eighth century Shi'ite imam who said another sign of the Mahdi's return would be a battle involving warriors fighting under a yellow banner - the color associated with Lebanon's pro- Assad Hezbollah militia."As Imam Sadeq has stated, when the (forces) with yellow flags fight anti-Shi'ites in Damascus and Iranian forces join them, this is a prelude and a sign of the coming of his holiness," Hosseinian was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.

MEDIEVAL BATTLEFIELDS

Islam split into its Sunni and Shi'ite branches during a war over the succession to the leadership of the faith in the generation that followed the Prophet Mohammad's death in 632.The hadith, or sayings of the prophet and his companions, have been handed down orally over the centuries and are the most important sources of authority in Islam after the Quran itself. Many date back to those medieval battlefields in what are now Syria and Iraq, where the two main Islamic sects took shape. The historical texts have become a powerful recruitment tool, quoted across the region from religious festivals in Iraq's Shi'ite shrine city of Kerbala to videos released by Sunni preachers in the Gulf, and beyond."We have here mujahideen from Russia, America, the Philippines, China, Germany, Belgium, Sudan, India and Yemen and other places," said Sami, a Sunni rebel fighter in northern Syria. "They are here because this what the Prophet said and promised, the Grand Battle is happening."Both sides emphasize the ultimate goal of establishing an Islamic state which will rule the world before total chaos.Although some Sunni and Shi'ite clerics are privately skeptical of the religious justifications for the war, few in the region express such reservations in public for fear of being misinterpreted as doubters of the prophecies."Yes some of the signs are similar but these signs could apply at any time after the fall of the Islamic state (1,000 years ago)," one Sunni Muslim scholar in Lebanon said, asking that he not be identified. "There is no way to confirm we are living those times. We have to wait and see."For the faithful, the hadith chart the course of Syria's conflict from its beginning in March 2011, when protests erupted over the alleged torture of students and schoolboys who wrote anti-Assad graffiti on a school wall in Deraa."There will be a strife in Sham (Syria) that begins with children playing, after which nothing can be fixed," according to one hadith. "When it calms down from one side, it ignites from the other."Hadith on both sides mention Syria as a main battlefield, naming cities and towns where blood will be spilled.Hundreds of thousands of people will be killed. The whole region will be shaken from the Arabian Peninsula to Iraq, Iran and Jerusalem, according to some texts.Saudi Arabia will collapse. Almost every country in the Middle East will face unrest. One statement says "blood will reach knee-level".A widely circulated hadith attributed to Mohammad says Sham, or Syria, is God's favored land. Asked where the next jihad will be, he replies: "Go for Sham, and if you can't, go for Yemen ...(though) God has guaranteed me Sham and its people."Another refers to Muslims gathering "at the time of war in Ghouta, near a city called Damascus". Ghouta, east of Syria's capital, has been a rebel stronghold for the last two years.A Sunni hadith speaks of a battle in a town called Dabeq, in northern Syria near the Turkish border, and intervention by a foreign army to split the Muslim fighters - seen by some as a reference to a possible Turkish incursion.

ARAB SPRING GIVES WAY TO SECTARIAN STRUGGLE

Syria's civil war grew out of the "Arab Spring" of pro-democracy revolts in the Middle East and North Africa in 2011 after Assad's forces cracked down hard on peaceful protests. But because Assad is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shii'ism, and most of his opponents are Sunni Muslims, the fighting quickly took on a sectarian character, which has largely overwhelmed the political issues."These hadith are what the Mujahideen are guided by to come to Syria, we are fighting for this. With every passing day we know that we are living the days that the Prophet talked about," said Mussab, a fighter from the Nusra Front, a Sunni hardline group linked to al Qaeda, speaking from Syria.Murtada, a 27-year-old Lebanese Shi'ite who regularly goes to Syria to battle against the rebels, says he is not fighting for Assad, but for the Mahdi, also known as the Imam."Even if I am martyred now, when he appears I will be reborn to fight among his army, I will be his soldier," he told Reuters in Lebanon.Murtada, who has fought in Damascus and in the decisive battle last year for the border town of Qusair, leaves his wife and two children when he goes to fight in Syria: "Nothing is more precious than the Imam, even my family. It is our duty."Syria's civil war built upon sectarian conflicts elsewhere, especially in Iraq and Lebanon, leading to a growing sense across the region that all those power struggles in individual countries were part of a titanic battle for the future.Abbas, a 24-year-old Iraqi Shi'ite fighter, said he knew he was living in the era of the Mahdi's return when the United States and Britain invaded Iraq in 2003."That was the first sign and then everything else followed," he told Reuters from Baghdad, where he said was resting before heading to Syria for a fourth time."I was waiting for the day when I will fight in Syria. Thank God he chose me to be one of the Imam's soldiers."Abu Hsaasan, a 65 year old pensioner from south Lebanon, said he once thought the prophecies of the end of days would take centuries to come about."Things are moving fast. I never thought that I would be living the days of the Imam. Now, with every passing day I am more and more convinced that it is only a matter of few years before he appears."(Editing by Dominic Evans and Peter Graff)

Four Islamists killed in failed suicide attack, Nigeria says
APR 1,14-Yahoonews

Maiduguri (Nigeria) (AFP) - Four would-be suicide bombers planning to blow up a petrol station died in Nigeria's troubled northeast on Tuesday after soldiers opened fire on their explosives-packed cars, the military and witnesses said. The suspected Boko Haram Islamists were trying to attack a filling station owned by Nigeria's state oil firm on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the epicentre of a brutal insurgency which has already killed an estimated 1,500 people this year.Defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said in a statement that "three of the four explosive-laden vehicles were demobilised by shots fired at them by soldiers".Shortly after the officers opened fire an explosion "rocked the area", said Olukolade, adding that "four terrorists" died and five soldiers were wounded.Initial reports indicated that the troops stationed at the checkpoint on the Maiduguri-Damboa road were the target.

But witnesses later said the attackers were trying to speed through the checkpoint so they could set off the blasts at the petrol station, which was backed up with vehicles because of fuel shortages across Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer.Local residents said some soldiers or bystanders may have been killed by the blasts but there was no immediate confirmation.Boko Haram was blamed for a series of blasts in Maiduguri last week that left at least five police officers and three civilians dead. The group has repeatedly attacked the security services during an uprising aimed at creating a strict Islamic state in northern Nigeria. The unrest has killed thousands of people since 2009.More than 250,000 people have been displaced by the conflict in the northeast since the start of the year, Nigeria's main relief agency said last month. The entire region has been under a state of emergency since May 2013, when the military launched an offensive to wipe out Boko Haram. But the results of the campaign have been mixed and brutal attacks have persisted, with defenceless civilians and schoolchildren among those slaughtered in recent weeks.

Egypt Muslim Brotherhood chief calls Sisi a 'tyrant'
By Samia Nakhoul 1 hour ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

CAIRO (Reuters) - The top leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood accused Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former army chief widely tipped to become the country's next president, of being a tyrant and predicted he would fail to stay in power.Speaking on Tuesday from a cage in a courtroom where he faces trial for inciting violence, Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie also dismissed accusations by the military-backed government that the group engaged in terrorism."The people will not accept an army tyrant," Badie said in reference to Sisi, who resigned from the military on Wednesday in order to contest a presidential election on May 26-27.Sisi toppled President Mohamed Mursi, who was freely elected in 2012 after many years rising through the Brotherhood, last July after mass protests against his rule. His ouster was followed by one of the toughest security crackdowns on the Brotherhood in its 86-year history. Hundreds of its supporters were killed at a pro-Mursi protest camp last August and thousands others including Mursi were arrested.Badie and many other Brotherhood leaders have been put on trial in several cases, crippling a mainstream Islamist movement that won nearly every election since the uprising that toppled autocratic president and ex-army general Hosni Mubarak in 2011.Badie, 70, and 50 others were on trial on Tuesday in connection with violence that occurred when security forces dispersed Mursi's main Cairo protest camp last August. Defendants were defiant throughout the proceedings, chanting the Egyptian national anthem, reciting versus from the Koran and making four-finger gestures that have come to symbolise Brotherhood resistance to state repression.Defence lawyers withdrew from the session after a judge rejected one of their requests. Sisi won over many Egyptians by removing the Brotherhood from power and pledging to crush "terrorist" attacks the government blames on the group, which lost support on the street after Mursi's troubled year in office."The group has for over 85 years never engaged in terrorism and never surrendered to any terrorism even if it was practiced by the state, and has endured a lot for that sake," said Badie, wearing a loose, white shirt-like garment."They (the current authorities) are the terrorists. This Sisi is the one who manufactured terrorism."The Brotherhood has accused the Egyptian state of practicing "terrorism" by rounding up thousands of people and engaging in what human rights group say are abuses."They (the authorities) are the ones who are killing the Egyptian people," Badie said.Only 33 of the 51 defendants appeared in court on Tuesday, while 18 others were being tried in absentia.Scuffles erupted in the court after a judge told Brotherhood defendant Salah Sultan, a professor at the prestigious Al-Azhar University, to "shut up" after he complained of not being able to hear proceedings. When a lawyer requested that a softer tone be used with Sultan because he was a religious scholar, the judge just smiled. The defendants stood with their back facing the judge after the judge addressed Sultan and chanted, "Down, down with military rule."

Proceedings were adjourned until April 6.

Last week, a judge in the city of Minya issued a stunning sentence, even by the standards of the wholesale repression of the Brotherhood, when 529 Brotherhood members and supporters were given the death penalty for murder and other offences.Gehad el-Hadad, among the defendants who appeared in court on Tuesday, urged world powers to promote democracy in Egypt."Those leaders of the world who speak in the name of democracy, now is the time to stand (up) to end the military coup," Hadad said in English."We are fighting for the freedom of our country. It is turning into a Sisi family. We will continue fighting for our freedom. We will not surrender."(Reporting by Samia Nakhoul, Writing by Yasmine Saleh; Editing by Michael Georgy and Mark Heinrich)

Britain orders probe into Muslim Brotherhood terror links
By Danny Kemp 1 hour ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

London (AFP) - British Prime Minister David Cameron said Tuesday he had ordered an investigation into the Muslim Brotherhood over concerns that the group, declared a terrorist organisation by Egypt and Saudi Arabia, is linked to violent extremism.Key leaders of the group have been based in London since the toppling of the Islamist Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi last year and a crackdown that has seen hundreds killed and thousands arrested. The new Egyptian government welcomed the British inquiry, which will reportedly see intelligence agencies assessing claims that the Brotherhood was linked to a suicide bus bombing in Sinai that killed three South Korean tourists in February and to other attacks.Cameron said the inquiry was partly due to concerns over extremism following the brutal murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in a London street by two Islamist converts last year.Britain must "fully understand what this organisation is, what it stands for, what its links are, what its beliefs are in terms of both extremism and violent extremism, what its connections are with other groups, what its presence is here," Cameron told a joint press conference with visiting Italian premier Matteo Renzi. The inquiry by John Jenkins, Britain's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, would paint a "complete picture" of the organisation, Cameron added.Egypt's foreign ministry spokesman Badr Abdelatty welcomed the investigation, saying in a statement that he "hoped the matter will be addressed with the necessary seriousness and attention".The Brotherhood's leader Gomaa Amin, who came to London before the coup for medical treatment, and Ibrahim Munir, a member of the group's guidance council, are both currently based in the British capital. The group's press office is also based in the city. They gathered in a flat above an Islamic charity office in the drab northwest London suburb of Cricklewood, according to The Times newspaper. In a statement received by AFP in Cairo, the Muslim Brotherhood said its members in Britain "fully respect the institutions and laws of the country in which they live."The Muslim Brotherhood calls on the Western governments and states to be careful as the military junta is trying to pressure (them) in order to distort the reality about the Brotherhood and what is happening in Egypt," it added.- 'Possible but unlikely' ban -The Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 and despite years of repression it remains the largest Islamic movement in the Middle East, having particularly returned to prominence during the Arab Spring uprisings.Morsi, who belongs to the Brotherhood, became Egypt's first elected civilian president following the toppling of Hosni Mubarak in 2011, but he was ousted by the army last July after a single year in power. He now faces three separate trials.Egypt's military-installed government in December declared the Brotherhood a "terrorist organisation". Saudi Arabia followed suit last month. In Egypt more than 1,400 people have been killed in street clashes and thousands imprisoned, including the Brotherhood's top leadership.A judge triggered a global outcry last month for sentencing 529 Morsi supporters to death for murder and attempted murder of policemen in riots.Other senior Brotherhood members are in Doha and Egypt is requesting their extradition from Qatar. The Brotherhood says it has eschewed violence for decades. The Times reported that it was "possible but unlikely" the probe could lead to a ban on the Muslim Brotherhood in Britain.Britain's domestic spy agency MI5 and foreign intelligence agency MI6 had both been tasked with gathering information on the group, the daily said.Cameron's Downing Street office said in a statement to AFP that the Brotherhood had "risen in prominence in recent years but our understanding of the organisation -- its philosophy and values -- has not kept pace with this".London has long played host to political exiles of all stripes from around the world.

EU launches peacekeeping force for Central African Republic
1 hour ago-APR 1,14-Yahoonews

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union formally launched a peacekeeping force for Central African Republic on Tuesday, overcoming delays due to shortages of soldiers and equipment thanks to last-minute offers of help from EU governments.French and African Union peacekeepers have so far failed to stop the conflict that erupted after the mostly Muslim Seleka rebels seized power a year ago in the majority Christian state.Operating out of the capital Bangui, the force of up to 1,000 soldiers will bolster 6,000 African and 2,000 French troops struggling to stop the violence in the landlocked, impoverished country that has left thousands dead. When the EU initially approved the mission in January, it had hoped troops would start arriving by the end of February. At a meeting in Brussels last week, EU governments and some countries from outside the bloc offered new support for the mission in the areas of strategic airlift as well as help with deploying the force."The launch of this operation demonstrates the EU's determination to take full part in international efforts to restore stability and security in Bangui and right across the Central African Republic," EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement. The EU gave no details of which countries made the new offers of help. The United Nations said on Tuesday it was trying to evacuate 19,000 Muslims urgently from Bangui and other parts of Central African Republic who are surrounded by anti-balaka Christian militia threatening their lives.Anti-balaka forces control major routes to and from Bangui as well as many towns and villages in the southwest, the U.N. refugee agency said. The militia has become more militarised as it steps up attacks on Muslims and African Union peacekeepers. The goal of the EU force will be to provide security in the capital Bangui and at Bangui airport, where around 70,000 people who have fled the violence are living in dire conditions. The EU force will stay for up to six months and cost an initial 26 million euros ($36 million), before handing over to African Union peacekeepers.France has urged its EU partners to do more to help in its former colony, saying the EU must not shirk its responsibilities for international security.(Reporting by Justyna Pawlak; Editing by Hugh Lawson)
