Russia Criticizes New Israeli Housing-INN-AUG 12,13

Russia responded negatively, Monday, to the announcement by Israel that it will invite bids to build nearly 1,200 homes in Judea, Samaria (Shomron) and part of Jerusalem beyond the 1949 Armistice line, according to Agence France Presse, which cited the Russian foreign ministry as saying Moscow was "seriously concerned" by the move.A Russian ministry statement said, "The announcement of such plans on the eve of a new round of negotiations due to be held in Jerusalem on August 14 ... is a counterproductive step that complicates the atmosphere of the talks."

The European Union has denounced the proposal for construction in Judea and Samaria and parts of Jerusalem beyond the 1949 Armistice Line.
The EU insisted on Monday that Israel and the Palestinian Authority should "avoid any actions which would halt negotiations," according to AFP.Michael Mann, spokesman for EU foreign affairs head Catherine Ashton, responded to the announcement for new housing tenders at a news briefing:"Israeli settlements in the West Bank [Judea and Samaria] are illegal under international law and threaten to make a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict impossible."Recently, the EU issued a directive boycotting Jewish businesses of Judea and Samaria, Eastern Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights, regions which are beyond the 1949 cease-fire line.The Israeli government disputes claims that Jewish communities in those areas are "illegal."
Following the EU directive, one thousand legal experts from Israel and around the world submitted a letter to European Union Foreign Affairs Commissioner Catherine Ashton, refuting claims of illegality and calling on her to annul the EU's plan.More recently President Peres urged the EU to freeze its boycott during upcoming talks in Jerusalem. Peres says the European Union’s support will help bring peace.In the statement made earlier today, Michael Mann stressed that both sides need to show a "sustained willingness to engage in good faith" if the latest talks are to produce "tangible and timely progress."

The ministerial committee headed by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon met Sunday evening and approved the release of 26 terrorists as part of a gesture to the Palestinian Authority, in order to get it to resume peace talks with Israel.In addition to Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Science and Technology Minister Yaakov Perry and Public Security Minister Yitzchak Aharonovitch, the meeting was also attended by the head of the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), the Commissioner  of the Israel Prisons Service (IPS), representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the IDF and other officials. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu did not attend as he was recovering at home from his emergency hernia surgery.The names of the terrorists to be released will be published on the IPS website, www.ips.gov.il, on Sunday night.14 of the terrorists to be released will be exiled to Gaza, and the remaining 12 will be transferred to PA-assigned areas of Judea and Samaria. Eight of the terrorists on the list were to be released over the next three years, two of them in the coming six months.

Netanyahu's office said that the terrorists will be released about 48 hours after the publication of the list. It was emphasized that if one of the terrorists resumes hostile activity against the State of Israel after his release, he will be returned to prison to continue serving his sentence.Earlier on Sunday, families of victims of terrorism marched through Jerusalem in a protest against the government’s plan to approve the release of 26 terrorists.They marched from the central memorial for terrorism victims, located in Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, to the Supreme Court building, where the court is to hear a petition against terrorist release filed by the Almagor organization.

Yaakov and Miriam Tubul, whose son Lior was stabbed to death by terrorists 23 years ago, are enraged with the government's decision to set free 104 terrorist murderers, as a “gesture” to the Palestinian Authority (PA).
The pained and grief-stricken parents say they cannot understand the government's decision.“How can you release a murderer who stabbed an innocent Jewish youth 17 times, in the heart of Jerusalem? These are animals, not human beings,” cried Miriam.Miriam was not allowed to speak at the Jerusalem court hearing Sunday that discussed a motion to stop the release from taking place. Nonetheless, she called out to the judges: “These people murdered my son and his friend. Murdered by stabbing, with unbelievable cruelty. We trusted the court, that these murderers would rot in jail, and here you are, allowing their release and not even agreeing to hear us.”On August 4, 1990, Lior left his home at Kiryat Yovel with his friend, Ronen Levi Karamani. The two were supposed to meet a friend at Givat Ze'ev, in northern Jerusalem. Another friend took them in his car to the bridge at the neighborhood of Ramot. When they failed to show up at the meeting, the friend phoned the Tubuls and the search for the two began.It turned out that a car with three terrorists inside it took the two from the bridge. The terrorists threatened the two, tied them up and then stabbed them in numerous parts of their body. Their bodies were found in a wadi between Beit Hanina and Ramot, two days later. They were given a joint funeral and buried side by side.The Almagor terror victims' group says that one of the three terrorists who murdered the two boys, Abd-el Jawad Shamasna, is on the list of terrorists whom the government intends to release in the “gestures” for the “peace talks” with the PA. However, he does not appear to be in the first batch of terrorists, who are to be released this week.

The Rabbinical Congress for Peace has sent a letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and to each minister in his government urging them to cancel their decision to release terrorists as a “gesture” to the Palestinian Authority (PA).
The rabbis warned that the government is stepping into a trap “with open eyes.”“Out of all the deplorable and dangerous moves that governments in Israel carried out in the past to start a so called 'peace process' the current move is the most dangerous of them,” the RCP wrote.“Today there is absolutely no expert or pundit who thinks that [PA head Mahmoud Abbas] is serious about peace with Israel, they know he has no control over the Arab street. 'In a final resolution, in the new Palestinian state we would not see the presence of a single Israeli,' he told Egyptian journalists last week. Does he sound like a man seeking peace with Israel?
“It should be clear,” the RCP wrote, “that the Palestinian Authority has no intention of making peace. It only wants to get concessions and blame Israel for an absence of peace. It knows that the Obama Administration will never punish it if it balks but probably will only offer it more. The negotiations will, as in the past, only make matters worse and in the end the world will blame Israel.“Worst of all is that this time the Israeli government is stepping into the trap with open eyes, it knows too well the price we are going to pay, G-d forbid, for this adventure. It even adopted a decision that will help the new terror wave by providing 'backup' in the form of dozens of the most dangerous terrorists, savage murderers of men women and children.

“Is there no limit to madness?! In their letter the rabbis add: “We unequivocally affirm that according to Jewish Law, if you cannot withstand the political pressure each one of you is morally obligated to resign immediately. Releasing even one terrorist endangers Jewish lives. A recent research found that 75% of the terrorists that have been released in the past revert to attack Jews. This also encourages others to engage in terrorism confident that they will be released.“Thus it is better that the whole government resign than to release even one terrorist.In a special message sent to the ministers of Bayit Yehudi, the rabbis added: “According to Jewish Law, it is forbidden for you to remain even one day in a government that releases cruel terrorists and is prepared to negotiate with its enemies and murderers on the borders of Israel.“You are not doing a favor to the Jewish nation by adding more apartments in Judea and Samaria because by remaining in a government that advances such dangerous policies you are stabbing the settlers in the back. Besides, there is no guarantee that you in fact will get these housing units following the international outcry against it.“We pray and hope that the government of Israel will come to their senses the last minute and refrain from carrying out such an absurd policy. The Netanyahu government still has time to regret its life threatening decision and safeguard the security of the Jewish people in their land.”

US chief of staff arrives in Israel

Martin Dempsey to hold high-level talks with IDF commander and prime minister

US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey arrived in Israel on Monday for a series of meetings with IDF top brass, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon.

In what is his third visit to Israel, Dempsey will be the guest of IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and will hold discussions on regional cooperation and strengthening military ties between Israel and the US.Last week, Gen. Mark Welsh, the chief of staff of the US Air Force, completed a secret visit to Israel that was only reported after he had left the country. Welsh was in Israel August 4 to 8 as the guest of the commander of the Israeli Air Force, Maj.-Gen. Amir Eshel. During his visit, Welsh met with senior officers and defense personnel, including Gantz, and was hosted at air force bases throughout the country.With at least some Lebanese Hezbollah forces tied down in the fighting in Syria, and the organization experiencing political blowback in Lebanon for its support of the Assad regime, the US may be concerned that Israeli leaders believe the cost of an Iran strike — especially in terms of rocket strikes on Israeli cities from across the border — has dropped.Earlier this month, Netanyahu upped his rhetoric against Iran’s nuclear program, citing Iranian President Hasan Rouhani’s anti-Israel oratory as proof of his hawkish views.“Two days ago, the president of Iran said that ‘Israel is a wound in the Muslim body.’ The president of Iran might have changed, but the regime’s intentions did not,” Netanyahu said at the time. “Iran intends to develop nuclear capabilities and nuclear weapons in order to annihilate the State of Israel, and that’s a danger not only for us or the Middle East, but for the whole world. We are all responsible for preventing it.”A report by the US-based Institute for Science and International Security two weeks ago said that Iran could break out to a nuclear bomb by mid-2014 if it went ahead with a plan to install thousands of new centrifuges.Last August, Dempsey demonstrated the gap between the Israeli and American sense of urgency over the Iranian nuclear program when he told a press conference in London that an Israeli strike would “clearly delay but probably not destroy Iran’s nuclear program. I don’t want to be complicit if they [Israel] choose to do it.”He said that intelligence was inconclusive when it came to Iran’s intentions. An American-led international sanctions regime “could be undone if [Iran] was attacked prematurely,” he added.

This is no way to build trust

The expected release on Wednesday of the first 26 prisoners (of 104) as a goodwill gesture in the resumption of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority has brought about the expected wave of enraged responses from both sides.While the headlines in Israeli newspapers have dealt extensively with the criticism leveled by the families of victims killed by the prisoners to be released, on the Palestinian side there has been no shortage of voices expressing disappointment in the make-up of the list.“This is not what [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud] Abbas had hoped for,” one senior Fatah member told this writer. “Last night we were trying to figure out who one of the prisoners was that was to go free, because none of us knew who he was. This does not appear to be a gesture to [Abbas], but rather to [Hamas Prime Minister Ismail] Haniyeh. We expected the release of some of the “symbols,” the known prisoners, because now Abbas needs to show an achievement to the Palestinian public, especially in light of the Israeli government’s statements about building in the territories.”Not a single senior PA official openly expressed such reservations about the composition of the list. Publicly, the release of 26 prisoners, some of whom are ill, must be welcomed. Nevertheless, there is considerable disappointment on the Palestinian side. And as the senior official explained, the disappointment lies not only in the list of relatively unknown prisoners being released, but also in Israel’s provocative message of continued construction.Indeed for PA officials, and particularly for Abbas, the announcement by the Israeli government about building 1,200 new housing units in East Jerusalem and the settlement blocs is seen as a deliberate provocation, a blatant attempt to undermine the peace talks before they get started. PA executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi and Palestinian negotiating team member Mohammad Shtayyeh already said Sunday night that it will be Israel’s fault when the negotiations fail before they have barely begun.The Palestinians obviously knew that Israel had no intention of stopping construction in the settlement blocs. But nobody expected Israel to blab about it three days before the talks were set to begin, and at the same time as Martin Indyk, the US peace coordinator, arrived in the region.The upper echelon of the PA leadership has apparently forgotten that even while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is recovering from a hernia surgery and preparing for the resumption of negotiations with the Palestinians, he is also preoccupied with how to get the more hawkish members of his Likud party to support him in the peace process.The implied threats by the Palestinians to refuse to show up for the next round of talks seem empty at this stage. If Abbas decides not to send his delegation to Wednesday’s first meeting with Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and her staff, it is the Palestinians who will be blamed for the failure of the talks. Israel stood by its commitment: to release Palestinian prisoners and to limit construction to “only” the settlement blocs. Very few people will buy into the Palestinian version that Israel’s decision to build 1,200 housing units was an attempt to make Abbas cancel the peace talks.Still, it is easy to understand the Palestinians’ anger. One of the most important things in any negotiation is the establishment of trust between the parties. Even if Netanyahu “only” builds in the settlement blocs, it is no way to build trust.

Why the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate have been placed under the supervision of a commissioner

“Vatican Insider” takes a look at the traditionalist press campaign and the reasons behind the Vatican’s informed decision to appoint a commissioner to supervise the Institute

ANDREA TORNIELLI vatican city The Pope’s decision to place the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate under the supervision of a commissioner - after the Congregation for Religious requested him to do at the end of an apostolic visit which began last year – and to forbid them to celebrate Mass according to the Old Rite without prior authorisation, has sparked heated media reactions originating from traditionalist circles and critics of Francis’ papacy. There is one basic reason for this: Francis is seen as going back on a Motu Proprio issued by Benedict XVI in 2007 which liberalised the pre-Vatican II missal. Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi has denied that this is the case.American traditionalist blog Rorate Coeli published the text of the decree which announces the appointment of a commissioner to supervise the Institute, including the clause on the traditional Latin Mass. On 29 July, Italian traditionalist blog, Messainlatino, published the official version of the letter the commissioner sent to the Institute’s religious. The news was discussed in greater detail that same day, by Vatican correspondent Sandro Magister, who presented it as the first open “contradiction” to Ratzinger’s pontificate. A reaction also came from Italian news agency Corrispondenza Romana, headed by Professor Roberto De Mattei, who has ties with the traditionalist world and has written a book about the Second Vatican Council, which presents Vatican II as an event which broke with past tradition. Corrispondenza Romana also gathered signatures for a petition to support the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate being able to use the Old Rite. The petition was then sent to the Congregation for Religious.On 7 August, two journalists with close links to the traditionalist world, Mario Palmaro and Alessandro Gnocchi, wrote an article for Italian newspaper Il Foglio with the eye-catching title: “Quella sberla ai Francescani nella chiesa di Francesco” (“Francis’ Church gives Franciscans a slap in the face”). The article says the style of the letter sent by the Holy See-appointed commissioner Fr. Fidenzio Volpi, resembled that of Romanian Communist politician Ceaușescu’s bureaucrats. The two journalists mocked Francis’ message to Muslims for the end of Ramadan as well as his recent trip to the Southern Italian island of Lampedusa. Comparing Francis’ pontificate against the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, the journalists said the latter “are poor and humble without being ostentatious”, whilst the “new pontificate seems to love the cameras and being in the spotlight.” Gnocchi and Palmaro defined the decision to appoint a supervisory commissioner for the Institute a “draconian” measure which aims to weaken the friars in their determination to rediscover and preserve the traditional Latin Mass. The 1962 missal corresponds to the Mass that has been celebrated for two centuries whereas the post-Vatican II liturgy is not linked to tradition.

In a recent interview with Vatican Insider, the former Procurator General of the Franciscan Friars, Fr. Alessandro Apollonio, flatly denied that the Institute’s friars and women religious were in any way involved in spreading the idea that the decisions affecting the Institute disavow Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio. But doubts remain regarding the obvious attempts to transform the Institutes internal issues and tensions to do with faithfulness to the original charisma, into an open battle over the traditional Mass and the supposed betrayal of Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio. This seems to suggest that the Holy See’s decision was either taken light-heartedly or based on “false” information, as Fr. Apollonio himself stated.It is worth remembering that the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate – an Institute which has a strong Marian and missionary ethos, was established in the 70s and takes its inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi and especially St. Maximilian Kolbe – did not originally spring out of a traditional context. The founder, Fr. Stefano Manelli took the Institute in this direction after the promulgation of the Motu Proprio issued by Benedict XVI in 2007, liberalising the Old Mass.In the General Chapter held in 2008, Fr. Manelli suggested a review of the Institute’s Constitutions, to make the use of the Old Rite in conventual Masses obligatory. Opposition to the proposal was so great that it was withdrawn without even putting it to the vote. But in the three years that followed, it was suggested again that Mass be celebrated according to the the Old Rite and sometimes the Rite was imposed. In an interview published on a French blog in 2010, Fr. Apollonio himself admitted that the Old Rite “is our conventual form of Mass and was recommended by our founder.” The Old Rite was even a favourite for priestly ordinations. Although no written law or decision was introduced in the Institute’s General Chapter to make the use of the Old Rite official, it was the “preferred” Rite in convents run by the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate. Some countries, in fact, issued bilingual editions of the book of hours, in English and Latin, so as to encourage people to pray in Latin.In 2012, this led a group of friars – Frs Antonio Santoro, Michele Iorio, Pierdamiano Fehlner, Massimiliano Zangheratti and Angelo Geiger – who formed part of the original community and held important roles in the running of the Institute and in its development and were transferred on various occasions as punishment for their non-traditionalist views – to ask the Vatican Congregation for Religious for the original charism to be restored. They also asked for traditionalist ideas not to be imposed on them, including those which reduced the influence of the Second Vatican Council or presented it as an event which marked an irreconcilable break with previous tradition.Fr. Geiger wrote a letter stating that there were some influential figures within the Institute who claimed the New Mass was for ordinary Catholics, whereas the Old Mass was “for Catholics who were more serious about the faith.” According to this point of view, the “extraordinary form of the Roman Rite” liberalised by Benedict XVI was seen as automatically superior.

A separate chapter addresses the mistrust some of the Institute’s heads feel towards the new pontificate. This opinion is fully shared by certain websites and blogs that try to portray the friars as victims “persecuted” by “enemies” who support the Old Mass and their Vatican sponsors. Those who oppose the line taken in recent years do not believe that the Old Mass and traditionalism should form the exclusive basis of young seminarists’ training. They also do not agree that traditionalist “opinions” should be treated as “law” within the Institute and passed off as a sign of loyalty to its founder, when they should not be imposed on anyone. Particularly, these friars say, as the General Chapter did not consult or issue a mandate on this matter. Traditionalism “has nothing to do with our charisma” and “according to our legislation is not obligatory.”
Added to this, are other problems to do with the running of the Institute, the growing role of its female component which is more united in its support for the proposal regarding the Old Mass, and the pastoral problems linked to parishes where the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate carry out their ministry. A year ago, Benedict XVI’s reaction to all this was to order an apostolic visit. On 9 May 2012, even before the visit took place, in one of his public audiences, Ratzinger greeted consecrated women, seminarists and the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, praying that they would allow themselves to be nourished by the Word of God and the Eucharistic bread, so as to feel cum Ecclesia. This message is echoed in the letter sent by Francis’ appointed commissioner to the Institute’s members.The apostolic visitor handed out a very detailed questionnaire which dealt with all these problems  and as Vatican Insider has been able to learn, most of the members consulted said they were in favour of an extraordinary General Chapter being held or of a commissioner being appointed. This is proof that there are tensions within the Institute and that they are not limited to just a handful of rebel friars who supposedly managed to falsify the truth.So the theory that Pope Francis’ decision is a disavowal of his predecessor’s Motu Proprio does not seem to hold water, as Vatican Insider wrote last 30 July.It is therefore understandable that the Holy See did not take the decision to appoint a supervisory commissioner lightly and only went ahead with it had carefully considered every little detail. The Institute’s official website says that its founder, Fr. Stefano Manelli and the entire Institute of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate pledge obedience to the Holy Father and trust that given this obedience, greater mercy would be shown towards them. In the coming weeks, the commissioner will decide whether this statement should prevail over the pressure being placed on the Institute’s friars by traditionalist circles, to celebrate consciously according to the Old Rite, without asking for prior authorisation. According to these traditionalists, the fact that the Vatican decree does not at any point specify who the “competent authorities” are, gives the friars the right to continue celebrating the Old Rite.

New U.S. ambassador to Holy See will arrive in Rome soon

The US Senate has confirmed Kenneth Hackett, former CEO of Catholic Relief Services, as the 10th U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See. He is expected to arrive in Rome late August or early September

gerard o'connell rome Ken Hackett, the new U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See is expected to take up his post in Rome in September, if not in late August - as he himself hinted at the time his nomination was first announced.He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 1, but has yet to be sworn in at the White House, and get his diplomatic briefings, before he can take up the post.President Barack Obama nominated Kenneth Hackett, 66, the former CEO of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), on June 14 as the next U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See.  He succeeds Miguel H. Diaz who served in  that role from 5 August 2009 to 5 November 2011.The new ambassador is highly respected within the Catholic Church both in the USA and internationally. He has a distinguished record in the humanitarian field, having worked for 40 years with CRS, the official overseas aid and development agency of American Catholics. He joined CRS after serving in the Peace Corps, and was its Executive Director from 1993 to 2011, directing operations in more than 100 countries worldwide, and demonstrating that he posses considerable diplomatic and political skills.Having studied for 8 years in Jesuit schools, including Boston College, he is particularly looking forward to serving as the 10^th U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See at a time when the Pope is also a Jesuit. He finds the Jesuit way of approaching questions quite appealing, he told Baltimore’s Catholic Review:  “they look at some of the big, gutsy issues: they take them head on, they don’t shy away from things.  They’re strong in their faith, which makes them strong in their ability to address really fundamental questions.”He foresees “great opportunity for cooperation” between the USA and the Holy See under Pope Francis who “is highlighting some of those things” that were of concern to CRS when he worked there, and which are “basic to our faith”, such as “compassion for the poor, or to put it in more theological terms, the preferential option for the poor”, and “the dignity and sacredness of the individual”. He realizes, of course, that “there will be times where the position of the (Obama) administration differs from the Holy See” but, he said, “I am going to look for – as many of my predecessors did – those opportunities where we can come together and find strength in collaboration, coincidence of interests. There are some powerful connections that together will really make a difference”.
 
He has been watching Pope Francis “focus on changing the way the world looks at issues of poverty and injustice and so many social issues” and said, “I think we as Americans are right there. There is common cause. That makes me excited”.His former employers – CRS, are also excited, and were among the first to applaud his confirmation by the Senate.olh  "We are overjoyed that the country will be represented by a man who through his decades of service has demonstrated his commitment to the dignity and sanctity of life and fighting global poverty," said Dr. Carolyn Woo, the CRS president and CEO,  in a statement on August 2.
"We look forward to working with the new ambassador as he engages the Vatican and Pope Francis towards the common goal of advancing peace and justice in the world", she said.As Chief of the U.S. mission to the Holy See, Hackett will lead a team of ten professional staff, including five U.S. diplomats, and local support staff,  at the Embassy on Rome’s Aventine Hill.

This is a serious thing. It is like getting married. It is a serious life choice. But when you take something seriously it becomes beautiful. Difficult though it may be,” the Pope told a group of young people from the Italian city of Brescia who have started their vocational discernment. Francis met them yesterday in Rome, on the occasion of Paul VI’s 35^th death anniversary. Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano reports.
 
The newspaper described yesterday afternoon’s events, when the Pope went to pray at the tomb of his predecessor. “It was just after 2 pm when the Pope went down to the Vatican Grottoes from the Largo Braschi entrance to visit Pope Montini’s tomb. He stood here for a few moments of private prayer. A little later the Brescian Bishop of Bergamo, Francesco Beschi, a great admirer of Paul VI, celebrated a commemorative mass, attended by many of Pope Montini’s fellow Bergamascans and numerous faithful who still remember the late pope with deep fondness.”

“There were about sixty young seminarists and novices from the diocese of Brescia among the faithful, who wanted to pay tribute to their Pope by coming to Rome from the central Italian municipality of Poggio Bustone, on foot.” “After mass they wanted to meet Pope Francis, who gladly accepted. He told them so in person when he went to meet them in front of St. Martha’s just after 6 pm: “Thank you so much for this visit. It’s great, I’m so glad,” he said. He greeted them one by one, listening to the stories they had to tell. He then advised them to take their vocation seriously and had a photo taken with them before saying goodbye,” L’Osservatore Romano reported.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was granted back his full powers of office Sunday after his doctor decided he had recovered sufficiently from an emergency hernia operation he had undergone Saturday night.

Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital director Yuval Weiss cleared Netanyahu to return to work in a phone call with cabinet secretary Avichai Mandelblit, thus relieving Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon of his interim duties.

“I wish express thanks to the medical team who cared for me dutifully and professionally and all the citizens who inquired about my health,” said the prime minister in a statement. “I continue to constantly care for your welfare and security.”Netanyahu, 63, was said to have felt abdominal pain Saturday evening, prompting his personal physician Tzvika Berkovich and surgeon Aryeh Durst to examine him. A CT scan showed he had an umbilical hernia and doctors immediately decided to operate.Netanyahu was reportedly in “good spirits” before the procedure, and that his blood pressure and pulse were normal. He hadn’t needed a wheelchair to take him to the operating room.Netanyahu’s operation was performed at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital by a medical team led by Durst and Aviram Nissan, head of the surgery department, starting just past 2:30 a.m. He was first put under a local anesthetic, but was then placed under general anesthesia — at which time Ya’alon assumed temporary acting prime minister authorities.Netanyahu will be released later Sunday to recuperate further at home.Netanyahu was scheduled to oversee a ministerial meeting Sunday to finalize the first stage of the release of Palestinian prisoners as part of the resumption of peace talks, but the Prime Minister’s Office said that the session would be chaired by Ya’alon.The weekly cabinet meeting, regularly scheduled for Sunday mornings, has been postponed to Monday.The second round of peace talk meetings, set to take place in Jerusalem and Jericho, are still scheduled for Wednesday.

In the wake of the chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat’s angry letter to US Secretary of State John Kerry about Israel’s new settlement building amid the resumption of peace talks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his own letter to Kerry over the weekend, lambasting the Palestinians for failing to curb incitement against Israel.Netanyahu wrote to Kerry that leading Palestinian Authority officials were calling for Israel’s destruction even after peace talks resumed on July 31 in Washington — the first major effort since negotiations broke down in 2008.“Incitement and peace don’t go together,” Netanyahu wrote, explaining that new generations of Palestinians were being taught to hate Israel, further fueling the cycle of violence.

“Instead of educating the next generation of Palestinians to live in peace with Israel, the education of hate poisons them against Israel and lays the groundwork for continued violence and terror,” he wrote.Netanyahu pointed out, for example, that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s comment that a future Palestinian state wouldn’t have a single Israeli in it — which Abbas made as peace talks kicked off in Washington two weeks ago — was a form of incitement.He also pointed out that an anchor on the PA’s official news channel stated, during a broadcast of the Barcelona soccer team’s visit to the West Bank last week, that the state of Palestine would extend from Rosh Hanikra to Eilat, i.e. the entire length of Israel, constituting another incendiary statement.Last week, during a trip to Israel by a delegation of 36 House Democrats to Israel, Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland), the second-ranking Democrat in the US House of Representatives, addressed the issue of Palestinian incitement, particularly youth being taught hateful messages about Israelis.“Erekat talked about the necessity to live together with mutual respect,” Hoyer said about his meeting with the Palestinian chief negotiator at a Jerusalem press conference. “I asked him whether their school curriculum would comport with that objective… He said they haven’t done so perfectly, but that he believes they’re working on reaching that objective.”Speaking during the AIPAC-affiliated trip, Hoyer said that there has been “too much teaching of violence, too much perpetration of violence, and too much teaching of prejudice,” in the Middle East and that “no group on Earth” has been the object of as much discrimination and hate as the Jews.Hoyer told reporters he would follow up on the issue with the State Department and other officials when back in Washington.In his letter to Kerry Thursday, Erekat said the Palestinians have a hard time understanding how peace talks can move forward while settlements expand. He said the Palestinians see the move as direct defiance of the US role in facilitating negotiations.Israel’s latest settlement announcements were an indication of “Israel’s bad faith and lack of seriousness” in the talks, Erekat stated. He urged Kerry to “take the necessary action to ensure that Israel does not advance any of its settlement plans, and abides by its legal obligations and commitments.”Addressing Israel’s expansion of settlements during peace talks, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said US officials were speaking with the Israeli government to express concern about the settlements.“We do not accept the legitimacy of continued settlement activity and oppose any efforts to legitimize settlement outposts,” Psaki said. “The secretary has made clear that he believes both of the negotiating teams are at the table in good faith, and are committed to working together to make progress.”Settlements have long been a contentious issue between the Palestinians and Israelis.The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem — lands Israel captured in 1967. The renewed talks are to draw Israel’s borders with such a state. Since 1967, Israel has built dozens of settlements in the West Bank — deemed illegal by most of the international community. Some 560,000 Israelis live in settlements.On Thursday, a military official confirmed that the Defense Ministry had approved construction plans for more than 1,000 new apartments in settlements. This means the plans move forward, but still require final approval before construction can begin.

Earlier last week, the Cabinet expanded its list of West Bank settlements eligible for government subsidies. MAUMERE, Indonesia (AP) — Hot lava from an erupting volcano killed six people sleeping in a beach village on a small island in eastern Indonesia on Saturday, after ash and smoke from the volcano shot about a mile into the air, officials said.Mount Rokatenda in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted early Saturday morning, and nearly 3,000 people have been evacuated from the area on Palue island, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. The volcano has been rumbling since last October.The victims who died included three adults and two children, said agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, adding that the age of the sixth person killed was unclear. He said that the adults' bodies were recovered from Ponge beach in Rokirole village, but that the children's remains had not been found.Video footage on Indonesia's TVOne showed giant plumes of white and gray smoke and ash belching from the volcano into a sunny blue sky. Prior to Saturday's eruption, many residents had already been moved to safer areas.The disaster agency said the volcano spewed ash and smoke about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) into the air.The eruption lasted about seven minutes, said Frans Wangge, who heads the volcano's monitoring post. He said the hot lava burned trees around the beach and villages, and made it difficult to reach the area where the victims were killed.
Domi Dange, a Catholic priest helping those who fled to the district town of Maumere on nearby Flores island, said some residents, who had refused to leave when the area was earlier cleared, were sleeping under tents near the beach. However, details about the six people who were killed and where they were located at the time of the eruption remained unclear.Local authorities, including police and army officials along with members of a search and rescue agency, were heading to tiny Palue island to help with evacuations."We will see the best steps to be taken, but clearly they have to be evacuated," said Yoseph Ansar Rara, chief of Sikka District, which oversees the island. He said those already evacuated had agreed to be relocated to Flores island.Mount Rokatenda is one of about 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands that's home to some 240 million people. The country is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity because it sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped series of fault lines.

Sudan floods kill 11, affect 100 000

Khartoum - Heavy rains and flash floods in Khartoum and other parts of Sudan have killed 11 people and affected almost 100 000 in the past week, the United Nations said on Tuesday.Giving the first official figures for the impact of the flooding, which began on 1 August , the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairssaid the capital and Nile state to its north were the worst hit, but that five other states were also inundated.OCHA said "an estimated 98 500 people have been affected by heavy rain and flash floods" in a zone from Red Sea state in the east to South Darfur in the west.It cited figures from the Sudanese Red Crescent Society and another local humanitarian group, for the period to 4 August."The flash floods have killed 11 people and destroyed or damaged more than 14 000 houses in the states affected," OCHA said, citing local aid groups."Immediate needs of the affected people include emergency shelter, health and water and sanitation services," OCHA said.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes as a wind-whipped wildfire, which has swept across 18,000 acres, continued to spread toward Palm Springs Friday.Some 2,000 residents fled parts of Cabazon and the surrounding area south of Banning on Wednesday and Thursday as the blaze, dubbed the “Silver Fire,” spread east through the San Jacinto mountains, a desert range 90 miles east of Los Angeles. The West has already suffered a series of destructive wildfires in 2013. Colorado experienced the most destructive wildfire in its history in June, which killed two and destroyed about 500 structures. As that fire burned, 11 other fires plagued the state and more threatened other parts of the Southwest.
The following month, 19 heavily trained Hotshot firefighters were killed in the Yarnell Hill wildfire in Arizona.

Will there be animal sacrifices in the Third Temple?

The book of Ezekiel has detailed prophecies that are understood to refer to the Third Temple. Here are two verses from Chapter 40:

42 And four tables for the burnt offering, of hewn stone, one cubit and a half long, one cubit and a half wide and one cubit high; upon them they would lay the implements with which they slaughtered the burnt offering and [other] sacrifices. …

47 And he measured the Court; its length one hundred cubits and its width one hundred cubits, square, and the altar before the Temple.

Note the mention of an altar and animal sacrifices. So it seems like the answer is Yes.

Jewish groups held a mock Passover sacrifice on Thursday opposite the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The ritual slaughter was not merely a historic reenactment, but, they say, practice in advance of the reconstruction of the Temple.The practice sacrifice has been held annually for the past several years. This year organizers were unpleasantly surprised by a veto from Israel’s Veterinary Services, which refused to authorize the event.
Organizers took the matter to court, and were able to quickly get a ruling permitting the ritual.The various groups involved in the event were represented by Rabbi Yehuda Glick, who told Arutz Sheva that the ritual was carried out with as much Biblical accuracy as possible.“We took the goat, as the Torah commands, we had an altar built like the real one, and a cooking pit built according to halacha [Jewish law],” he said. “We slaughtered the goat with Leviim singing and priestly clothing, just like in the real Passover sacrifice.”
Leviim are Jews belonging to the Biblical tribe of Levi, whose members took part in Temple services.
The ritual was emotionally moving, Rabbi Glick reported. “The symbolism of standing opposite the Temple Mount and preparing for the real Passover sacrifice – it was without doubt a special moment,” he said.

Introduction

The significance and meaning of the Temple sacrificial system deserves - and requires - an entire treatise in its own right. In the Holy Temple animal sacrifice is prescribed by the Torah not only for various minor sins that were committed, but on many other occasions as well. This is not the place for a lengthy treatment of this subject. Still, since a great deal of misunderstanding does exist with regard to the true purpose of the sacrifices, we present a brief and altogether general introduction to the subject. Although intensely aware that we cannot do justice to such a sensitive and involved subject in this format, we can nonetheless attempt to clarify a number of important points.

The Concept of Sacrifice Dates to the Beginning of Time

Maimonides writes (Guide for the Perplexed, 3:32) that animal sacrifice dates back to the most ancient times, having been a common form of worship from the earliest days of man's need for religious expression and experience. He opines that the Torah incorporated this type of practice by providing for such offerings. In other words, G-d sought to give His people an avenue by which this desire may be expressed to Him, and thus made provisions for it by issuing the sacrificial commandments. Indeed, it is a common position of many great scholars and thinkers that sacrifices were among the earliest and most profound expressions of the human desire to come as close as possible to G-d. Thus the Bible records the sacrifices of Cain, Abel, and Noah.It is evident that the Jewish concept of sacrifice as it existed in the Holy Temple is widely misunderstood. For this worship functioned on many levels: ethical, moral, philosophical, mystical... and in fulfillment of the word of G-d. For although the idea of the sacrifices may seem difficult for contemporary man to accept, it is the commandment of the Holy One.Checking the definition of the word "sacrifice" in Webster's Dictionary, we begin to see a conceptual gap in our thinking which may help us expose the cause behind much of the misunderstanding. For the English the verb "sacrifice" means something entirely different:

However, the Hebrew word for "sacrifice" (korban, le-hakriv) is from the same root as "to come near, to approach. . . . to become closely involved in a relationship with someone." For this is meant to be the essence of the experience which the bearer of the sacrifice undergoes. Indeed, it is unfortunate that no word in the English language can adequately render the idea behind the Hebrew word korban. We allow ourselves to use the word "sacrifice" for lack of a better word, but it is a highly unsuccessful attempt at translation; it could even be called unfortunate. The idea of a sacrifice or offering seems to indicate a gift or present; giving up something of value for another's benefit, or going without something of value yourself, for the benefit of that other.None of this gift-giving idea is present in the idea of the korban. First of all, it is a word that never carries a connotation of a present or gift, and is used exclusively by the Bible in the context of man's relationship with G-d. Thus its true meaning can only be grasped through its root... the concept of coming close.If the definition of the korban is "to come closer," then the goal of the Temple sacrifices is nothing less than the aim of dedicating human life to a higher sphere of awareness... closer to the Creator and the source of all life. The Temple sacrifice is not an idea of giving something up or losing something of value; it strives for nearness to G-d. For as King David prayed in the book of Psalms (73:28), "but as for me, nearness to G-d is good" - for the Jew, nearness to G-d is the truest, the highest, the only conception what goodness really is. Without this aspect to his life, without this G-dly relationship which uplifts his physical existence and imbues his life with a sense of connection to the Divine, he feels himself to be like an animal, devoid of that which makes him into a human being: the spark of his G-dly soul... without this he feels similar to the animal before him, on the altar. In a sense, what happens to the offering is also taking place within the heart and mind of he who brings it... 

A Deeper Level of Understanding: Levels of Conflict Within Creation

Existence contains four distinct levels: inanimate, vegetable, animal, and man. These levels are not only physical, but spiritual as well; every aspect of the created universe possesses a spiritual essence. All these elements are locked in a mortal struggle with each other, for each strives to rise to the next level, and thus become closer to the source. The sages taught that the only time when all of these basic forces are rectified and in harmony with each other is in the Holy Temple. For in the Temple service, all four aspects of creation unite together in the service of G-d, and thus reach their full potential in fulfilling His will and sanctifying His name. The priest who offers each sacrifice represents humanity; the animal offered, the animal kingdom; the flour, frankincense, libations etc. represent the world of plants; and even the inanimate level is represented... for salt must be a part of every sacrifice. Thus when the Temple stands, all of creation functions in harmony. This is one aspect of how the Temple brings peace to the world: "...and in this place, I will grant peace, says the L-rd of Hosts" (Haggai 2:9).

Man: The Greatest Contradiction of All

In all of creation, man is unique because he is a living contradiction. His life is a tightrope walk between the physical and spiritual worlds, and throughout his life, he finds himself locked in constant struggle between the pull of these two opposing forces. His body, hewn from the earth, is the seat of the darker, physical nature that tries to pull him down, like gravity, in that direction. His G-dly soul, which is a very part of G-dliness itself, seeks to elevate him by subjugating his physical side to the spiritual.

The Offering is for Man's Benefit

This is part of the concept of the Temple sacrifices as well. For when an individual sinned and brought a korbon, the death and burning of the animal on the Temple altar gave him a strong visual symbolization of what he himself deserves, were G-d to judge him severely, with the exacting scrutiny of unmitigated justice. The Torah teaches us that we are able to approach the identity of G-d and have some knowledge of Him through His names, or attributes. In this light it is instructive to note that throughout the book of Leviticus, in reference to the korbonot-offerings, G-d never refers to Himself with the Name Elohim, which denotes the Divine attribute of strict justice. For when connected to the sacrifices this could be misconstrued to indicate that the G-d who commands these offerings does so as a vengeful, bloodthirsty deity who demands a sacrifice as reparation. But nothing could be further from the truth; such imagery is nothing more than the illusion of a heathen vision of G-d, an unforgiving G-d who accepts the struggling death throws of an animal as a substitute for the forfeited life of a human being. But the only Name that the Bible associates with the offerings to G-d is HaShem, YHVH - signaling the attribute of Divine love and mercy.

The G-d of Love Desires Man to Refine His Own Humanity

Precisely because He is the G-d of love, not the G-d of punishment and death, He has prepared the sacrificial system as a method of restoring man's moral and spiritual life, and purifying that life. The sacrifice represents the death of man's physical side, the side of him that will die when kept at a distance from G-d. But if he will bring his entire self into the service of G-d, he will connect with his true purpose, namely the empowerment of his spiritual nature through the rectification of his own animal urges. Thus he gives satisfaction to his Creator; the "pleasing aroma" of the sacrifices is the very fact that man refines his own humanity.The experience of bringing this sacrifice for the individual was thus comparable to a vicarious taste of death, and it helped to reconcile the animal and spiritual natures within him.

The Sacrifices are Meaningless Without Repentance

It was only in the Holy Temple that the full spiritual nature of this process could be appreciated. It is of crucial importance to be aware that by no means did the sacrifices serve as an end in themselves. For example, the sin offering, which was a minority of all the offerings brought in the Temple, was powerless to atone for sin unless it was accompanied by a thought of resolute, true repentance. Without repentance, the sacrifice was invalid; the korbon itself was only a means by which man could arouse himself to repent. We are likewise taught that G-d Himself did not require the sacrifice but for the betterment of the crown of His creation, man; however He would prefer that man not sin, and not be necessitated to bring any offering (BT Berakoth 22:A).

The Creator Raised Man Above the Animals

Today, there are those who refer disparagingly to the "cult" of Temple sacrifice; they find the concept repugnant. Their viewpoint is understandable, since their entire basis for understanding these lofty concepts comes from a standpoint that is totally pagan. Those of this ilk view the sacrificial system as brutal because they have no conception of a G-d who beckons to us to raise ourselves above the animals and dedicate ourselves to Him. For man is at the center of creation; all else which G-d created was brought into existence solely to help aid man in his quest for spiritual perfection.

PARIS — In the wake of Poland’s ban on kosher slaughter, France is awaiting the outcome of a battle of its own.After proposing special labels on July 17 for halal and kosher meat, Sen. Sylvie Goy-Chavent has encountered fierce criticism in France and Israel.Accused of anti-Semitism by Jonathan-Simon Sellem, the editor-in-chief of JSS News — the main French-language media outlet in Israel — Goy-Chavent filed a police complaint last month over death threats she says resulted.Already an established opponent of ritual slaughter, Goy-Chavent became a participant in the latest flare-up after she was asked by the Senate to investigate the French meat industry following Europe’s horsemeat scandal in early 2013.Goy-Chavent’s work drew her attention to a loophole in French law that allows animals to be slaughtered for kosher and halal meat — unlike all other meat products — without first being stunned, since Judaism and Islam require animals to be conscious before their necks are cut.“Instead of calling for an outright ban on ritual slaughter — which I very well could have done — I opted for compromise,” Goy-Chavent told the Times of Israel, “and asked for meat to be labeled in an non-stigmatizing way, which would indicate the way the animal was slaughtered.”The move generated criticism at a pair of Senate hearings even before Goy-Chavent issued her proposal.

During a May appearance before lawmakers, Mohammed Moussaoui, a former president of the French Council of the Muslim Faith, argued that separate labels on meat would have to be “fair,” and “never stigmatize Muslims or Jews.”That argument was made again during a second hearing on June 26 by Rabbi Bruno Fiszon, an expert on kosher slaughter, and Joel Mergui, the president of the Central Israelite Consistory of France, which provides religious services to Jewish organizations.“If consumers are told that the meat they buy wasn’t stunned before slaughter, and there is at the same time a campaign seeking to convince people that ritual slaughter is synonymous with barbarism, then we are against this policy,” said Mergui.Both Jews and Muslims argue that ritual slaughter, which produced 14 percent of French meat in 2010, is no less humane than modern methods.Mergui also pointed out what he considers a double standard in the Senate investigation, which focused on ritual slaughter but left aside hunting and bullfighting, which remain legal.“Europe would honor itself if it viewed ritual slaughter as a legitimate method of slaughter, not as a debasement of the law. We are fed up with being a debasement,” he said.Although the debate on ritual slaughter has simmered for several years — in 2011, then-Prime Minister Francois Fillon declared “these ancestral traditions don’t mean much” in a “modern society” — the latest round came to national attention on July 13, when Sellem’s website published an article with a headline that suggested Goy-Chavent might be anti-Semitic. The essay noted a letter in Le Parisien last year in which Goy-Chavent urged President Francois Hollande to outlaw religious slaughter, as well as her call in the past for separate labeling for products from the West Bank.“But no, she isn’t focused on Israel,” Sellem concluded. “And no, she isn’t anti-Semitic. Well . . . .”The French senator subsequently decided to press charges against the website. She said she’s received death threats from Internet users, without mentioning where they appeared.Among the most violent comments on the JSS website, one featured a call to “slash her neck and see how long it takes her to bleed.”

In a public letter addressed to Hollande and published on her Facebook page July 27, Goy-Chavent wrote that many people, including Parliament members, have advised her “to be extremely cautious, and even mentioned a possible intervention from a foreign country’s special services,” interpreted by many as a reference to Israel.To Sellem, the reaction was “over the top.”“I admit that the comment posted on the website is not particularly refined, and I firmly condemned the torrent of insults against her, but clearly she has to take a step backward and look at this situation from a distance,” he told the Times of Israel. “This comment was ironic — it was certainly not a death threat.”“I don’t care much about labeling kosher and halal meat, but I’m worried that this is just the first step before an outright ban on ritual slaughter,’ Sellem said, referring to last year’s letter in Le Parisien.“First comes kosher meat, and then what? Circumcision? How about outlawing prayer books in Hebrew because it’s not secular enough? ” he asked.Since the most recent uproar began, animal welfare activists including the Brigitte Bardot Foundation — which condemns ritual slaughter as cruel — have expressed support for Goy-Chavent. In a case of strange bedfellows, so has the extreme-right National Front party.The legislator, for her part, seems interested in lowering tensions, expressing regret to the Times of Israel for comments in which she dismissed defenders of ritual slaughter as “all Jews.”“I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all Jewish people who have been hurt by what I said. This was not my intention,” Goy-Chavent commented. “But the insults that were hurled at me have been dreadful.”

The oil company calls it “seepage.” Environmentalists describe it as a “blow out.” Either way, the leak at the oil sands project in Northern Alberta — which has spilled 280,022 gallons of oil across 51 acres since June — is stoking the controversy over the energy source. “This mess is a symptom of the problems with the reckless expansion of the tar sands,” said Anthony Smith, a lawyer in the international programs division of the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington. “Environmental regulations have just not caught up.” … The cause of the oil spill at the Royal Canadian Air Force base in Cold Lake, Alberta, remains unclear. The company that owns the project, Canadian Natural Resources, blames abandoned wells in the area. Environmentalists point to fundamental flaws with the company’s process. Until they find the source of the problem, oil continues to leak at four locations. The spill, modest by historical standards, is manageable for the company, which says it expects to spend $60 million on cleanup and investigation. But already the leak is spoiling the landscape and hurting wildlife. It has killed 71 frogs, 27 birds and 23 mammals, including two beavers, according to the company.At the site, Canadian Natural Resources uses an approach that is increasingly common for oil sands ventures. In a process similar to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, Canadian Natural injects hot steam at high pressures into underground oil sands deposits. The heat liquefies the bitumen and the pressure separates it from the surrounding sand. The process allows the bitumen to flow to the surface through wells. Canadian Natural has been reluctant to acknowledge the spill, going public only after The Toronto Star published an article based on photographs and documents from a government scientist who was not identified by name. But in a conference call with analysts last week, Steve W. Laut, the company’s president, repeatedly defended its process, saying it had not caused the spill.Mr. Laut said that the amount of pressure needed to force bitumen through the protective rock layer “is significantly higher” than that used by the company. Instead, he argued that the oil was seeping up through inadequately sealed, abandoned oil wells in the area. “You cannot have these failures without a well bore failure,” he told the analysts. Canadian Natural did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday. But the Alberta Energy Regulator has swiftly disputed Mr. Laut’s statement. “We do not currently have the evidence or data to support any conclusions as to the cause of the incident and look forward to reviewing C.N.R.L.’s information supporting their conclusions on the root cause of the releases,” Jim Ellis, the chief executive of the newly formed regulatory body, said in a statement. The regulator has ordered some of Canadian National’s operations near Cold Lake suspended and others reduced until the cleanup is complete and a cause for the spill is determined.A study released in January by Alberta’s previous regulator about a 2009 spill at the same site also appears to undermine the company’s contention that old wells are the source of the problem. While that study did not determine a cause for the 2009 spill, its authors said that they believed that the protective layer of rock “was likely breached by high-pressure steam injection not related to a well bore issue.” The study added that the high pressure of the steam that Canadian Natural used probably contributed to the 2009 spill and that the steam and pressure may have created weaknesses in the protective rock layer and provided an escape route for bitumen. “There’s a pretty strong incentive for the company to portray this as a technical issue because technical issues can be fixed, unlike fundamental issues,” said Chris Severson-Baker, the managing director of the Pembina Institute, an environmental group based in Calgary, Alberta. AER updated the total volume released on Friday to 1060 cubic metres – just over 6600 barrels of oil or more than 1 million litres. The volume of the Kalamazoo tar sands disaster, the largest and most expensive on shore oil spill in US history, was around 3 million litres. The original incident report claimed only 28 cubic metres of oil were released. “That volume grows every day, so it changes every day,” said Tobin. A recent Alberta Primetime exclusive shows a large body of water affected by subsurface seepage of bitumen. CNRL incident commander Kirk Skocylas says one area of the spill is emerging from “a subsurface source” and “because it is within the water body we physically can’t see where it is coming up.”
