Star of David, Stripes of Blue

Symbolism and meaning on Israel’s Independence Day

Israeli flag
Israeli flag-Flash 90
In Israel, during the weeks before Independence Day flags come out of boxes, draped from their balconies and stuck on cars. Large office buildings display banners 30 floors high and light displays even larger. When you’re in Israel, it’s hard to escape the excitement of Independence Day!

So why blue and white?
The blue of the flag originates in biblical times. During these times, tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl, had blue dye in it. In fact, God spoke to Moses and advised him:‘Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generation fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue.And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye used to go astray; that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God.’ (NUM 15:38-40).
Over time as the Israelites spread throughout the world, this commandment was difficult, if not impossible to keep because no dye was available. Some people wove blue or purple into their tallit in an attempt to remember this request. Even today, many tallits on the market still have blue and purple stripes.
The blue stripes in the flag of Israel are a modern interpretation of the tallit, to remind this generation and the generations to come to keep the commandments. The blue and white is fitting for a flag, fitting for Judaica, fitting for tallit, but it doesn’t quite stand alone as a symbol. Enter the Star of David…

What is the origin of the Jewish Star?
The Star of David (or Jewish Star) has evolved into a symbol of Judaism, chosen by the Jewish people to represent themselves. There is no real historical basis for this choice and no mention in any books or scholarly theories that are proven to show any deep meaning in ancient times. In fact, biblically it was the burning bush that represented the people of Israel.‘And the angel of the LORD appeared until him in a flame of fiber out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.’ (Exodus 3:2).Like the bush that would not burn, the people of Israel could not be consumed by those who seek to destroy them. But a burning bush doesn’t make a compelling symbol any more than a color. Starting in the 17th century, the Jewish Star became the prominent symbol of Judaism.
A symbol is only as relevant as the meaning we ascribe to it – so as Jews and gentiles began to identify with the Star of David as a symbol of Judaism, it truly became to represent the Jewish people. And so it remains until today.

Same Star, Different Meaning
For those who want to destroy Israel, the star is a symbol of apartheid, oppression and war crimes. It’s used in cartoons under the guise of criticizing Israel, when in fact what it is doing is promoting anti-Semitism. So-called humanitarians burn the Israeli flag and carry signs where the Jewish Star is equated with the Nazi symbol. We’ll never forget the yellow stars of the Holocaust – the true symbol of genocide.
For the Jewish people and those who support them, this star is a source of pride, not hate.

So what does it really mean?
The true meaning of the Star of David is personal. Rabbi Shraga Simmons says that the six points of the stars represents God’s rule of all directions. He supports this claim with the fact that the star is called “Magen David” which means Shield of David. And since it was not the physical Shield of David that won his fights, but his help from God, the star represents God’s help. Simmons supports this again with the third blessing after the Haftorah, which states, “Blessed are you God, Shield of David.” However, he admits that there are other ideas:
  • The Kabbalah version of the Yin-Yang, representing the dichotomies of man, e.g. good vs. evil.
  • The 12 tribes of Israel.
  • The relationship between the Jewish people and God; we pray up as God projects down.
  • Technology developed in the 1st century Bar Kochba rebellion whereby shields were fashioned into a hexagon, formed by two triangles.
  • The conflicts among the Jewish people.
Why wear a Jewish Star?
Some people show their feelings about Israel by flying the Israeli flag high. Others might share news stories & images on Facebook. For those who choose to wear the Jewish Star, it’s just another way to connect personally to whatever feelings they have.People have individualistic interpretations of the Jewish Star. As a result, there are as many manifestations of the wearable Star of David as there are feelings about the symbol itself. The Star of David is a common charm on red Kabbalah bracelets. It adorns jewelry together with traditional blessings and prayers; it’s also not unusual to find modern art versions. One version consists of a dove and a triangle, called the “David Dove.” You can even find the Star of David entwined in a dream catcher or woven in gold around a crystal.

The importance of symbols
Symbols are an important part of how people express themselves. It’s one way we can show ourselves to others, but also remind ourselves of our own beliefs. Whether you choose to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day by flying a flag, sharing an inspirational e-mail with friends & family, joining activities in the Jewish community or just praying, the important thing is that you stay true to yourself.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who usually steers clear of passionate rhetoric, called terrorists "subhuman" at the Har Herzl ceremony marking Memorial Day for the IDF's Fallen Soldiers.His speech focused on the victims of terror – starting with Adelle Biton, the baby who is fighting for her life after an Arab rock ambush in Samaria."The rock terror joins the terror of fire bombs, the shootings and the rest of the terror attacks," Netanyahu said. "All of these have felled 2,500 victims."The terrorists want to us away from our land, he said, and all means are acceptable, in their eyes. "The murderers do not shy away from butchering babies and old people, or innocent bystanders. We will never be like them."Terror is not a pestilence from heaven," he said. "It is the work of humans. Usually, of subhumans. We will defeat them."
"There are supposed men of morals who preach to us, day and night," he added. "But I notice that they are not always quick to denounce our enemies when they spill the blood of innocents."

Iran warns strike will trigger ‘WWIII’

TEHRAN: Iran could launch a preemptive strike if Israel prepares to attack it, a senior Revolutionary Guards commander told broadcaster Al-Alam yesterday, a day after his boss warned that conflict was inevitable. Should Israel and Iran engage militarily, “nothing is predictable… and it will turn into World War III,” Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh told Iran’s Arabic-language television network. Hajizadeh, who is in charge of Revolutionary Guards missile systems, said: “In circumstances in which they (the Israelis) have prepared everything for an attack, it is possible that we will make a preemptive attack. But we do not see this at the moment.”He added that Iran would deem any Israeli strike to be conducted with US authorisation, so “whether the Zionist regime attacks with or without US knowledge, then we will definitely attack US bases in Bahrain, Qatar and Afghanistan”. He warned that Israel “cannot imagine our response – and it will sustain heavy damage and that will be a prelude to its obliteration.” The US Fifth fleet is based in Bahrain and the US has a heavy military presence in Afghanistan.On Saturday, the head of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said war between Iran and Israel “will eventually happen, but it is not certain where and when”. It was the first time a senior Iranian official had acknowledged a probability of war breaking out between the two arch-foes. Jafari, quoted by the ISNA and Fars news agencies, also said such a conflict would lead to the annihilation of Israel.”If they begin (aggression), it will spell their destruction and will be the end of the story,” he said.
Yesterday, Jafari’s deputy, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, told Fars in an interview that Iran’s “defensive strategy is based on the assumption that we will engage in a war, a massive battle against a global coalition led by the US”. He said the Islamic republic had made preparations to “crush” the enemy by hitting “enemy bases in the region, the security of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the energy market, as well as the lives of enemy forces.” He added: “We will not start a war. But if someone wages war against us, we will launch continuous offensives.”Tensions have risen significantly in recent weeks, with Israel threatening to unleash air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Israel believes Iran’s nuclear program to be aimed at developing an atomic weapons capability that would menace its existence and its current status as the Middle East’s sole, if undeclared, nuclear weapons power. Iran insists that its atomic program is exclusively for peaceful, civilian ends, but it is locked in a deepening standoff with the UN nuclear watchdog and the UN Security Council over the issue.Separately, Siemens denied yesterday that it had sold any nuclear equipment to Iran, after a prominent Iranian lawmaker accused the German firm of selling the country gear that was laced with explosives. The lawmaker, Aladin Borujerdi, who chairs the parliamentary national security and foreign policy commission, said Siemens had sold Iran equipment for its nuclear program that contained mini-explosives, Iranian media reported yesterday. “Intelligence-security apparatus succeeded in discovering explosives in equipment which were provided to us for our nuclear activities,” Borujerdi said in an interview with parliament’s ICANA news website. “The explosives were to blow up when activated to disrupt the whole system.  Domestic experts nullified the plot of the enemy, however,” he was quoted as saying by ICANA. “The company Siemens, which provided this equipment, must answer for its action,” he said.
Siemens spokesman Alexander Machowetz categorically denied the charge, telling AFP: “Siemens maintains no business dealings in connection to the Iranian nuclear program and delivers no equipment to this end.” Iran’s Press TV carried the story on its website, but no other state media reported on the claim. Iran often alleges sabotage attempts by Western or Israeli intelligence services, but provides little in the way of evidence. The Islamic republic, however, has suffered the assassination of four of its nuclear scientists in the past two years, attacks it has blamed on Israel, the United States and Britain. It has also been targeted by sophisticated computer viruses, such as Stuxnet and Flame, that have spied on its activities or wiped out data related to its controversial nuclear program.Meanwhile, a senior Iranian lawmaker accused the head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog yesterday of passing confidential information about Iran’s nuclear activities to Israel. In the latest sign of strained relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Javad Jahangirzadeh, a member of parliament’s presiding board, said IAEA chief Yukiya Amano would be to blame if Iran reduced its ties with the body. “Amano’s repeated trips to Tel Aviv and asking the Israeli officials’ views about Iran’s nuclear activities indicates that Iran’s nuclear information has been disclosed to the Zionist regime (Israel) and other enemies of the Islamic Republic,” Jahangirzadeh was quoted as saying by Iran’s English-language Press TV.“If the agency’s actions lead to Iran cutting cooperation with this international body, all responsibility will be with the IAEA director general,” said Jahangirzadeh, a member of parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee. The IAEA was not immediately available to comment on his allegation. Last week, Iranian nuclear energy chief Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani said “terrorists” might have infiltrated the Vienna-based agency. He suggested the IAEA included too much sensitive information about Iran’s nuclear program in its reports that he said could be used by saboteurs.
Western diplomats dismissed his allegations as an attempt to distract attention away from the agency’s bid to gain access to a site in Iran it suspects was used for nuclear weapons research, something Tehran denies. Iran blames Israel and its Western allies for the assassination of nuclear scientists in Iran, including an unsuccessful attempt on Abbasi-Davani in Nov 2010. It also blames those countries for computer viruses that appeared designed to damage its nuclear machinery.Kuwait times

Gold 'collapses' to $1,400 zone amid commodities rout

These are stories Report on Business is following Monday, April 15, 2013.
Follow Michael Babad and the Globe’s top business stories on Twitter.
Commodities sinkGold prices plunged again today amid a general rout in commodities, sinking below $1,400 (U.S.) an ounce at one point to mark a decline of more than $160 over two days of trading.“When gold begins to fall, it sparks margin calls, and then it’s a vicious circle,” said chief currency strategist Camilla Sutton of Bank of Nova Scotia.Just about everything looks ugly this morning: Silver, copper and oil are also sinking, as are stocks and currencies such as the Canadian dollar, which was down 0.8 per cent from Friday’s close on a number of factors, including the decline in bullion. The U.S. dollar, Ms. Sutton noted, is stronger as gold "collapses."Gold opened Friday at $1,561 an ounce, then sank, marking a plunge into bear market territory. Today, it dipped below $1,400 at one point, to a low of about $1,385, before regaining some ground.
The real trouble began last week amid suggestions in a draft bailout document that Cyprus could sell gold from its reserves, sparking concerns that other embattled European countries, such as Italy and Portugal, could follow suit.Two major banks – Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Société Générale – also put out bleak forecasts.Then today, a reading on China’s economic growth disappointed the markets, despite the fact it came in at 7.7 per cent, sparking fears over what’s supposed to be the engine of the global recovery.
"We already knew Europe isn't growing," said Kit Juckes, the chief of foreign exchange at Société Générale.
"Then we got a U.S. slowdown. Then we got a Russian slowdown and then the Chinese data came out and sent further despondency into the markets. Down went gold, down went equities, credit indices. Yield curves steepened and up went yen, dollar and Korean won, against pretty much everything else."Gold will likely see a “minor rebound” after today, said Michael Haigh, Société Générale’s head of commodities research, but here’s how he views it: “Buying opportunities but I won’t be buying.”Société Générale had projected a 15-per-cent drop in gold by the end of this year, to $1,375 an ounce, followed by what it forecast would be years of a “gentle bear market.”Goldman Sachs, in turn, sees gold averaging $1,545 this year and $1,350 next.
RBC’s outlookRoyal Bank of Canada today did a stress test of sorts on North American gold producers, finding “significant” pain should bullion plunge further to $1,300 an ounce.Here’s what Stephen Walker, the head of the bank’s global mining research, and analysts Dan Rollins and Sam Crittenden found:Gold at $1,500 an ounce: “We estimate a low probability that our selected gold producers would trigger a single-notch credit ratings downgrade. We would expect producers to draw down existing credit facilities, consider cash-saving measures and, where necessary, seek debt financing in order to complete the existing capital spending programs.”At $1,400: A “moderate probability” of a one-notch downgrade to Barrick Gold Corp., while all producers cut expenses and delay spending plans.At $1,300: A “moderate probability” of a one-notch hit to Newmont and Allied Nevada Gold, and a “conceivable” hit to non-investment grade debt ratings of Barrick and Kinross Gold Corp., while all producers would cut spending sharply, put off new programs and, for some, cut dividends.At $1,200: A “high probability” of non-investment grade hits to Barrick, Newmont Mining Corp. and Kinross. “We would expect all the gold producers to consider care and maintenance for high-cost mines, cut all discretionary expenses, cut capital spending programs, defer new development projects and consider cutting dividends.”

Markets anxiousStock markets around the world are also taking it on the chin today, largely because of China.
“After last night’s disappointing Chinese growth figures, which missed their target by some way, it is hardly surprising that commodity stocks have led the charge lower,” said market analyst Alastair McCaig of IG in London.Tokyo’s Nikkei dropped 1.6 per cent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng 1.4 per cent.In Europe, London’s FTSE 100, Germany’s DAX and the Paris Cac 40 were down by between 0.6 per cent and 0.9 per cent by about 9:15 a.m. ET.Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 futures also sank.

Anti-euro party officially launched in Germany

Today @ 09:29 APR 15,13
By Valentina Pop

Around 1,500 delegates gathered early Sunday morning in Hotel Intercontintental in former West Berlin - so many that the organisers had to book an extra conference room.All the participants believe that the euro is a doomed project that should be ended soon for the benefit of all the single currency countries."We take pride in being called populists. There is something like a free speech police here in Germany saying there is no alternative to the euro. We are the alternative now, Alternative for Germany," Konrad Adam, an ex-journalist and co-founder of the new party said in the opening speech, often interrupted by standing ovations.They reject the anti-European label. But the reaction of the crowded room at a certain point was revealing. A British and US diplomat invited to the meeting were greeted with applause. An EU commission representative was booed.Unlike other EU countries, Germany's openly anti-European parties have so far led a marginalised political existence. And no party so far has openly advocated for the dissolution of the euro, apart from the neo-Nazi NPD which staged a mini protest outside the hotel saying they are the "real" anti-euro party.The Alternative for Germany hopes to capitalise on recent polls showing 17 percent of voters could imagine opting for a party that favours exiting the euro.But start-up parties have a harder time in Germany than elsewhere, especially when they are single-issue.The Pirate Party calling for free and deregulated Internet made it into regional parliaments, but internal quarrels and a lack other political ideas have eroded their support base and they are unlikely to make it into the Bundestag.Christian Jacken, a 36-year old former Pirate party official present at the Alternative for Germany congress told this website he is interested in joining the new party because of its ideas."I am pro-European, but I am against a centralised state and the constant breach of EU treaties - like the no-bailout clause," he said, with the constitutional court in Germany and the EU's own top court finding that the treaties were not breached by the setting up of a eurozone bailout fund.In order to make it into the Bundestag in the 22 September elections, Alternative for Germany needs to receive at least five percent of the total votes. Pollsters see this as unlikely, but the party could add to the troubles of the Liberals, Angela Chancellor Merkel's current coalition partners, who are stuck at four percent in the polls.According to the latest political barometer published by ZDF broadcaster on Friday, Merkel's Christian Democrats gained two points and lead with 42 percent, while the Social Democrats lost another two points and are down to 27 percent. The Greens are stable at 14 percent, the leftist Linke at six percent.Asked if they would still want Merkel as chancellor, 63 percent of voters said yes, while her Social-Democratic challenger Peer Steinbrueck only convinced 27 percent, down two points compared to last month.If Germany were to exit the euro, 66 percent think it would be "rather bad" for Germany, while 26 percent say it would be a positive step. Seventeen percent said they would vote for a party favouring leaving the single currency.

North Korea looks inward for founder's birthday, tensions ease

By Ju-min Park and Jack Kim
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea celebrated the anniversary of its founder's birth on Monday and abandoned its shrill threats of war against the United States and the South, easing tensions in a region that had seemed on the verge of conflict.The North has threatened nuclear attacks on the United States, South Korea and Japan after new U.N. sanctions were imposed in response to its latest nuclear arms test in February.Many Pyongyang watchers has expected a big military parade to showcase North Korea's armed forces on the "Day of the Sun", the date the North's founder Kim Il-Sung was born.But on Monday, the 101st anniversary of Kim's birth was marked in the North's capital, Pyongyang, with a festival of flowers named after Kim.In contrast to weeks of tirades against its enemies, North Korean state media made hardly a mention of conflict."South Korea and the United States have sent a message for dialogue, so for now the North is switching to that mode," said Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.
"The North's strategic intention has been to try to get some kind of response from the United States and South Korea and now they have that. They won't be brushing away the suggestions to enter dialogue lightly."
The United States has offered talks, but on the pre-condition that North Korea abandons its nuclear weapons ambitions. North Korea deems its nuclear arms a "treasured sword" and has vowed never to give them up.Nevertheless, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, ending a trip to the region dominated by concern about North Korea, stressed his interest in a diplomatic solution."The United States remains open to authentic and credible negotiations on denuclearization, but the burden is on Pyongyang," he said. "North Korea must take meaningful steps to show that it will honor commitments it has already made, and it has to observe laws and the norms of international behavior."On Sunday evening, however, Kerry appeared to open the door to talking without requiring the North to take denuclearization steps in advance. Beijing, he said, could be an intermediary.Earlier, Kerry said he believed China, the North's sole economic and political benefactor, should put "some teeth" in efforts to persuade Pyongyang to alter its policies.The Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily, warned on Monday that tensions could get out of control.
"It does not matter if it is intentional or accidental, even the smallest thing could cause the situation to change rapidly and perhaps get totally out of control," the paper said.
ON GUARD
South Korean and U.S. officials said last week North Korea appeared set to test-launch a medium-range missile as a show of strength linked to Monday's anniversary of the birth of North Korean state founder Kim Il-Sung.North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests but it was not believed to be near weapons capability.South Korea said it remained on guard against any missile launch and it regretted the North's rejection of an offer of talks made last week by President Park Geun-hye. It said the offer would remain on the table.Missile launches and nuclear tests by North Korea are both banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions, that were expanded after its third nuclear test, in February.The aim of the North's aggressive acts, analysts say, is to bolster the leadership of Kim Jong-un, the 30-year-old grandson of the nation's founder, or to force the United States to hold talks with the North.The North has also been angry about annual military exercises between U.S. and South Korean forces, describing them as a "hostile" act. The United States dispatched B52 and B2 stealth bombers from their bases to take part.Yoji Koda, a former commander in chief of the Japanese naval fleet, told Reuters he believed North Korea's threats were part of a "calculated provocation", not a prelude to an attack.He said indications the United States was softening a forceful stance to the North had given its leader Kim Jong-un the opportunity to tone things down."This has enabled North Korea to declare victory and sheathe its swords," he said.Kim Il-Sung led his country from its founding in 1948 through the 1950-53 Korean War and until he died in 1994. His son, Kim Jong-il, then took over.KCNA, the North's news agency, reported that people were flocking to a statue of Kim Il-Sung, uttering "My father, our great leader"."This sincere expression comes from the bottom of their hearts," it said.
Kim Jong-un, the third Kim to rule in Pyongyang, attended a midnight celebration of his father and grandfather's rule with top officials, including his kingmaker uncle Jang Song-thaek.North Korean defectors said army units were expected to contribute for the celebration of Kim's birthday and in turn, the government, which has struggled to feed its people, had handed out extra rations of rice and corn."People are decorating streets for political events. It's never like war time," said Seo Jae-pyoung, a defector who lives in South Korea who spoke last week to an acquaintance in the North. "The government, which normally can't distribute rice, has already given about one week or two week's special rations."North Korea has repeatedly stressed that it fears the United States wants to invade it and has manipulated the United Nations to weaken it. At the weekend, the North rejected the overture by new South Korean President Park as a "cunning" ploy."We will expand in quantity our nuclear weapons capability, which is the treasure of a unified Korea ... that we would never barter at any price," Kim Yong-nam, North Korea's titular head of state, told a gathering of officials and service personnel applauding the achievements of Kim Il-Sung.(Additional reporting by Arshad Mohammed and Kiyoshi Takenaka in TOKYO, Ben Blanchard in Beijing; Somang Yang in SEOUL; Writing by Robert Birsel; Editing by Raju Gopalakrishnan)

Assad's forces break rebel blockade in north Syria

By Erika Solomon
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian government troops have broken through a six-month rebel blockade in northern Syria and are now fighting to recapture a vital highway, opposition and state media said on Monday.
Rebels had kept the army bottled up in the Wadi al-Deif and Hamidiya military bases in Idlib province. But on Sunday, President Bashar al-Assad's forces outflanked the rebels and broke through, the pro-government al-Baath newspaper said.The insurgents counter-attacked on Monday but their front has been weakened in recent weeks due to infighting and the deployment of forces to other battles, activists said.The break-out from the bases, located outside Maarat al-Nuaman town, may enable the army to recapture the main route into Aleppo, Syria's largest city, and bolster their fragile supply lines in the heart of the rebel-held north.
Two years into the uprising against Assad, government forces are fighting hard to maintain control of cities. Many rural areas and provincial towns have fallen to the rebels. Aleppo, formerly a business hub, is locked in a stalemate between the rival forces.Rebels had advanced in northern Syria, near Turkey, and southern Deraa province near Jordan. But government forces have kept the rebels out of central Damascus and hold more than half of Homs city, which links the capital to Assad's Alawite heartlands near the Mediterranean coast.March was the bloodiest month yet in a conflict which began as a protest movement against four decades of Assad family rule but has descended into an increasingly sectarian civil war in which at least 70,000 people have been killed.Sunni Muslim rebels are the backbone of the insurgency, while minorities like the Alawites, from an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, have largely fought with Assad, who can count on outside support from Russia and Iran.Western powers, who want to see the end of Assad but do not want to intervene militarily, have been alarmed by the advance of Islamist groups like the Nusra Front in a conflict which has deepened the Middle East's sectarian divide.Diplomatic efforts to find a political solution have gone nowhere.
BREAK THE BLOCKADE
Rebel attacks had forced the army to relinquish many bases in northern Syria and most roads around Aleppo and Idlib province, leaving the remaining government-controlled areas in the north to rely on airlifts for food and weapons."The break of the blockade yesterday allowed the army to drive six lorries full of weapons to get into the bases of Wadi Deif and Hamidiya," Rami Abdelrahman, head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Reuters.The pro-opposition observatory said that despite the army gains, neither side had a clear advantage.Abdelrahman counted more than 50 fighters dead or missing from the battle on Sunday. The army advance was not yet a decisive victory but could reopen battlefields in the north where rebels had the advantage, he said."We will see now what happens but if the rebels can push back the regime, they can avoid a major setback. If the regime is able to hold this opening it could take back the whole road and that will have major strategic consequences," he said.Activists in Maarat al-Nuaman, which has faced daily air strikes due to the blockade, accused rebels of causing their own defeat by depleting their forces in the area.Islamist units that moved in over the weekend accused forces on the ground, lead by the Martyrs of Syria brigade, of failing to secure the base and sending away too many fighters.The Martyrs of Syria brigade said they were pushing their campaign and the Islamist groups had hurt their blockade by interfering.According to Abdelrahamn, many of the main fighting units previously based in the area had moved to Raqqa, Ras al-Ain, and Hassakah, towns in the northeast which rebels recently seized.Government forces have pushed hard near the cities of Aleppo, Idlib and Damascus in recent weeks.
An air strike killed 13 people, including 10 children, in the Damascus district of Qaboun on Sunday, the Observatory said.Activists showed video footage of a boy, his face and arms blackened and bloodied and his leg bandaged, and a photograph of the bodies of three children in blue plastic body bags.
The fighting in Syria has also spilled over with increasing frequency into neighboring Lebanon.Two people, one of them a 13-year-old boy, were killed in the Lebanese border village of Qasr on Sunday by rocket fire from rebel-held positions in Syria, a Lebanese security source said. Six people were wounded.
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman condemned the bombardment, which he said "killed innocent Lebanese who have no connection to the conflict taking place outside their country".(Additional reporting by Dominic Evans; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

Iran's Ahmadinejad due to visit uranium-producing Niger

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to arrive on Monday in Niger, the world's No. 4 uranium producer, where French nuclear group Areva has seen its monopoly tested by a government looking to diversify its partners.Niger is the second of three stops on a trip aimed at deepening Iran's ties with Africa, a continent Ahmadinejad has courted for business deals and diplomatic support as the Islamic Republic becomes increasingly isolated by international sanctions targeting its disputed nuclear program.Some Western analysts say Iran may be close to exhausting its reserves of raw uranium crucial to its nuclear activity and could have to seek out foreign sources of supply.Last week, Iran said operations had begun at two uranium mines and a milling plant in the country and that Western opposition would not slow its nuclear work.Ahmadinejad will be coming from Benin. After Niger he will go on to oil-producing Ghana in what is expected to be his last Africa tour before he steps down in June after completing the second of a maximum two terms as president.It was not clear if any deal with Niger was on the table during Ahmadinejad's trip, but his Nigerien counterpart said last month he wanted to renegotiate the terms of its nuclear business with Areva.On the eve of Ahmadinejad's arrival, a local student's union called for Niger to strike a uranium deal with Iran."Areva has exploited us for over 40 years. What the Nigerien people need is a fair partnership," the union said in statement broadcast on private television stations.There is broad frustration in Niger that one of the world's least developed nations straddling the Sahara has not benefited more from decades of mining by Areva in its remote desert north.Earlier this month, several thousand people protested on the streets of Niamey against Areva, burning French flags.Talks are continuing between France and Niger and Areva has agreed to pay Niger 35 million euros ($45.84 million) in compensation over delays to the planned Imouraren project.But France remains an important partner for Niger, providing some 50 million euros in budgetary support last year on top of various other aid projects.Iran has denied having shortages of raw uranium, says its mines can supply the ore needed for its nuclear activity.But a report this month by U.S. think-tanks Carnegie Endowment and the Federation of American Scientists said the scarcity and low quality of Iran's uranium resources compel it "to rely on external sources of natural and processed uranium".It added: "Despite the Iranian leadership's assertions to the contrary, Iran's estimated uranium endowments are nowhere near sufficient to supply its planned nuclear program."Iran denies Western accusations that it is stockpiling enriched uranium as potential nuclear weapons fuel, not for future civilian power stations as it maintains.(Reporting by Abdoulaye Massalatchi in Niamey and Fredrik Dahl in Vienna; Writing by David Lewis; editing by Mark Heinrich)

Iran tested three new missiles and plans to unveil its new personnel carriers this week during military exercises being held in Isfahan Province.
Missile and rocket units in the Iranian Army test-fired the three different types of missiles, developed by the Army and Defense Industries, during recent war games, Ground Forces Lt. Cmdr-Gen Kioumars Heydari said on Saturday, Iran's FARS news agency reported.No details were released about the missiles, other than to say they were different from the current Fajr series and Naze’at 10 missiles stocked in the Iranian arsenal.
The Naze’at 10 is a medium range missile, falling short of the longer-range Fajr-5, which can reach up to 75 kilometers (47 miles).The display of military equipment is aimed at showing off the “latest achievements and defensive tactics” of the Islamic Republic. The parades will continue throughout the country through April 18, the country’s National Army Day.Among the missiles fired at Israel by Gaza terrorists during Operation Pillar of Defense last November was the Fajr-5 missile, which reached as far as Tel Aviv. The "home made" M75 missile produced in Gaza, also fired for the first time during that counter terror operation, reached as far as Rishon Lezion and was made with parts that were shipped to the region from Iran.It was during Operation Pillar of Defense that Iran for the first time admitted its involvement in providing military as well as financial support to the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza.

Jewish population in Israel grows
Jewish population in Israel grows-Flash 90
Just in time for Yom Ha'atzma'ut, the Central Bureau of Statistics released data on Israel's population. On the state's 65th anniversary, Israel had over 8 million residents, a nearly ten-fold increase over the number that lived here in 1948.A total of 8,018,000 people live in the State of Israel on Independence Day 2013, the CBS said. When the state was established on the fifth of the Hebrew month of Iyar in 1948, that number was a mere 806,000. Today, there are 6,042,000 Jews (75% of the country's population) living in Israel today, along with 1,658,000 Muslim and Christian Arabs (20.7% of the population). The country also has an additional 318,000 (4%) residents classified as “other,” including non-Arab Christians and members of other religions.Israel's population grew by 138,000 since last Yom Ha'atzma'ut, a growth rate of 1.8%. In 2011, it was announced that over 70% of the Jewish population were born in Israel, with more than half second-generation Israelis. In 1948, only 35% were “native Sabras.”The rise of the metropolitan area has been another important development in Israel over the past decades, the CBS said. In 1948, only one city – Tel Aviv-Jaffa – hand more than 100,000 residents. Today, there are six cities with more than 200,000 residents, including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Haifa, Rishon Lezion, Ashdod, and Petah Tikvah.

Kerry hopes next Palestinian PM can work with US

TOKYO (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday he hoped the Palestinians pick a new prime minister who can work with the United States and "establish confidence" so that Mideast peace can advance.Speaking to journalists in Tokyo, Kerry praised Salaam Fayyad, who until resigning Saturday as prime minister was seen as one of the Palestinians' most moderate and respected figures. Kerry called Fayyad a "good friend" who made a big difference for Palestinians.Fayyad's resignation comes as Kerry is working to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. An important part of his strategy is developing the Palestinian economy and state institutions so the Palestinians can be a viable partner in any peace deal with Israel.The United States had expected Fayyad to play a significant role in that effort.But the 61-year-old political independent and Western-trained economist had clashed with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over the extent of the prime minister's power."We're totally committed to moving forward with the economic thing no matter what," Kerry said, citing U.S. business partners including Coca-Cola. "The West Bank is there, Palestinian aspirations are there, the government is there. And in order to be a viable government, there's got to be more than one person that you can do business with.""So we will continue to work at this and hope that President Abbas finds the right person to work with him in a transition, and work with us, to establish confidence," he added. "Everybody is going to want somebody who provides confidence."Kerry said he preferred that Fayyad stay on the job, but that he understood Fayyad's decision.
"He's been sick, he's tired, he's been at this seven years. He has kids in school. He's anxious to carve his own path here and I respect that," Kerry said."But he's going to be there for a while. I had a long conversation with him. He's resigned and he accepted his resignation. But there's going to be a caretaker process for some period of time and he's not going to go away from Palestinian politics completely — if at all."

China says bird flu death toll rises to 13

BEIJING (Reuters) - Two people in the central Chinese province of Henan have been infected by a new strain of avian influenza, the first cases found in the region, while the death toll has risen to 13 from a total of 60 infections after two more deaths in Shanghai.One of the Henan victims, a 34-year old man in the city of Kaifeng, is now critically ill in hospital, while the other, a 65-year old farmer from Zhoukou, is stable. The two cases do not appear to be connected.A total of 19 people in close contact with the two new victims were under observation but had shown no signs of infection, state news agency Xinhua said.Another four cases have been confirmed in eastern Zhejiang, Xinhua said on Sunday, bringing the total number in the province to 15. None of the 483 people in close contact with the victims has presented any symptoms.
Three more victims were identified in Shanghai, China's business hub, bringing the total number of cases in the city to 24, with a total of nine deaths, state media said.Three cases have now been reported outside the original clusters in eastern China, including one in the capital Beijing, but there is nothing out of the ordinary so far, the China representative of the World Health Organization said."There's no way to predict how it'll spread but it's not surprising if we have new cases in different places like we do in Beijing," Michael O'Leary told reporters.On Saturday, the China Centre for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a seven year-old child in the capital of Beijing had been infected by the H7N9 bird flu virus, the first case to be reported outside of the Yangtze river delta region in east China, where the new strain emerged last month.
The child's parents work in the poultry trade.Investigators are trying to ascertain the source amid fears that it could cause a deadly pandemic similar to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, which killed about one in 10 of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide.China has been anxious to avoid a repeat of the panic of 2003 by promising total transparency, and O'Leary said his organization has been "very pleased" about the way information was being shared.China's health ministry said on Saturday that there is still no indication of human-to-human transmission of the virus, which has killed 13 people in Shanghai and the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui."That's a key factor in this situation," said O'Leary. "As far as we know, all the cases are individually infected in a sporadic and not connected way."The husband of a H7N9 victim in Shanghai was recently infected, but O'Leary said there was no cause for alarm."If there's only very rare cases ... That's different from the ease of transmission from person to person. It's that ease of transmission that we are concerned about, and there's no evidence of that yet."(Reporting by Sui-Lee Wee and David Stanway; Editing by Nick Macfie and Daniel Magnowski)

Egypt wavers on brink of IMF deal

By Paul Taylor
CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt is close to an agreement with the International Monetary Fund on a $4.8 billion loan that would help it fight a deepening economic crisis but is still bristling at the conditions, diplomats said.
An IMF program could help stabilize Egypt's economy in the rocky transition to democracy since the 2011 overthrow of former President Hosni Mubarak, unlocking up to $15 billion in aid and investment to improve a dismal business climate.But diplomats and politicians say Islamist President Mohamed Mursi had still to approve required tax increases and subsidy cuts that prompted him to halt implementation of an earlier IMF deal in December, two weeks after it was agreed in principle."The mission said it is waiting until now for the government to present some of the roadmap related to reforming the economic system, and it is still in dialogue with the government to get acquainted with this map," Abdullah Badran of the hard-line Islamist Nour party told Reuters after meeting IMF negotiators.Egypt's economy has deteriorated significantly since then. Tourism and investment have shriveled due to political turmoil in the Arab world's most populous nation, where 40 percent of the 84 million citizens live on less than $2 a day.The projected budget deficit has risen to around 11 percent in the fiscal year ending in June, foreign currency reserves have shrunk to less than needed to cover three months' imports, and the country is suffering fuel shortages.An IMF delegation has been holding talks in Cairo since April 4 on a revised economic program that includes a gradual reform of costly fuel subsidies that swallow 21 percent of the budget or 12 percent of gross domestic product, and an extension of sales tax to fewer items than previously planned.The country's finance minister and central bank governor have told local media the talks are going well, and diplomats said they are due to conclude, one way or another, before the IMF mission returns to Washington on Tuesday."We're waiting for clarity from the presidency," a diplomat briefed on the negotiations said.A spokesman for the president's office declined comment on whether Mursi had given the green light for an agreement.
UNPOPULAR
Diplomats said the ruling Muslim Brotherhood was reluctant to impose unpopular tax and fuel price increases before parliamentary elections provisionally due to start in October.Nevertheless the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party is pushing through parliament new tax laws apparently linked to the IMF deal. Opposition politicians accuse the government of trying to impose its will without dialogue.While the IMF team has been in town, the government has picked up $5 billion in apparently unconditional support from Arab allies Qatar and Libya to help it over the coming months.But Planning Minister Ashraf El-Araby warned last week that Egyptians would face worse austerity without an IMF deal. Ministers fear a long, hot summer of power cuts, and possible fuel and food shortages that could spark unrest.The state-owned Al Gomhuria daily quoted an economic source as saying the IMF deal had reached the final stages for signing.An Egyptian ministerial delegation including the central bank governor and the planning minister would go to Washington this week for the annual Spring meeting to seek agreement on the final phrasing of the loan deal, it said.Central bank chief Hisham Ramez was quoted by independent al-Shorouk newspaper as saying Egypt had not requested an increase in the loan, but the amount could be raised by up to $1 billion if the maturity were extended beyond 30 months instead of the 22 months forseen in last November's accord.The IMF mission, headed by Andreas Mauer, has spent the last few days meeting government and opposition political leaders to seek broad backing for implementation of the reform program.Politicians who have participated in those sessions said there was wide acceptance of the need for an IMF loan but less willingness to accept even relatively mild conditions attached."We heard the IMF's view, and it became clear to us that they are asking for some reforms to the tax system, and their view is that there must be a review of subsidies," said Badran, the Nour party's parliamentary floor leader. "This, in our view, will increase the burdens on the poor."Leftist Popular Current party leader Hamdeen Sabahi said his group would support any unconditional loan that supported the Egyptian economy, but it must not be on terms that put extra burdens on the poor, farmers, workers and the middle class, or that dictate how the government spends the money."The Popular Current cannot agree to a loan with conditions that include lifting subsidies from basic commodities," Sabahi, who came third in last year's presidential election, said on his Facebook page.Diplomats said the IMF had softened its conditions compared with many other adjustment programs, partly because the United States and European Union countries that are the Fund's biggest shareholders were determined to support Egypt."There is a sense that Egypt is too big to fail," one senior diplomat said. "The trouble is that the Egyptians know this, and think they can use it to escape the conditionality."IMF and World Bank studies show that most fuel subsidies benefit wealthier Egyptians rather than the poor, few of whom have cars."Estimates show that the richest 20 percent of the population in Egypt receives more than half of the spending on fuel subsidies," said Caroline Freund, the World Bank's chief economist for the Middle East and North Africa.That may explain why the subsidies are so hard to reform, with powerful interest groups keen to preserve their advantages.(Additional reporting by Tom Perry and Asma Alsharif; Writing by Paul Taylor; Editing by Will Waterman)

Different remits produce similar policies -British, U.S. central bankers

By Jonathan Spicer
BOSTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank have set monetary policy in similar ways regardless of their contrasting official mandates, top British and U.S. policymakers argued at a forum on how central banks can lower unemployment.David Miles, an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, on Saturday threw his weight behind an argument made a day earlier by Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren.Miles said the BoE's greater formal focus on inflation had not led it to pursue a tighter monetary policy than that sought by the U.S. central bank, which beyond inflation must also consider unemployment.Miles's comments come a few weeks after British Chancellor George Osborne tweaked the central bank's remit.Osborne gave more explicit backing to the bank's practice of ignoring short-term inflation overshoots. The changes also pave the way for the next Bank governor, Mark Carney, to use more aggressive communication strategies like those followed by the Fed and the Bank of Canada, which he currently heads.Miles, speaking on a panel at the Boston Fed alongside two other Fed policymakers and Lars Svensson of Sweden's Riksbank, played down the practical difference that central bank mandates made. His speech drew on technical models he first presented publicly in February."A wide range of weights placed upon real variables - output and employment - in the central bank's objectives can today give rise to rather similar monetary policies," he said."This might be an important part of the explanation for why the Fed and the Bank, two central banks with rather different formal objectives, have set monetary policy in such similar - and extraordinary - ways," he added.In officially keeping one eye on unemployment, the Fed is unusual in a developed world where central banks such as the BoE are typically tasked solely with maintaining price stability.Rosengren, who like Miles is on the dovish wing of their respective central banks, on Friday strongly defended the Fed's dual mandate of full employment and price stability. He argued the Fed's inflation record over the past 15-20 years has been as good as or better than European central banks.
Highlighting the records of the BoE, the Riksbank and the European Central Bank, Rosengren went so far as to suggest that central banks that focused only on inflation may want to consider adopting a U.S.-style dual mandate.He said such a strategy would, for example, make it easier to publicly explain buying bonds when inflation is running above target, as that trio has done in the wake of the global recession.Miles is the strongest advocate of more asset purchases to boost Britain's flagging economy at the UK central bank, and in a television interview earlier this week he said monetary policy should be "very, very expansionary".
On Saturday, he did not address the immediate outlook for Britain's monetary policy or economy.(Additional reporting and writing by David Milliken in London; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)

Independence Day approaches
Independence Day approaches-Israel news photo: Flash 90
Israel is preparing for one of the most emotionally charged weeks of the year: the week in which the Memorial Day for the IDF's Fallen Soldiers and Independence Day are marked, back-to-back.Memorial Day (Yom Hazikaron) will be marked from Sunday evening until Monday evening.Independence Day (Yom Haatzmaut) will begin Monday evening, and end Tuesday evening. This is in keeping with Jewish tradition, in which sunset – and not the hour of midnight – marks the beginning of the new day.Both holidays are relatively new ones; the 65 years in which Israel has existed are a short time, from the perspective of Judaism's history, which goes back almost 4,000 years. They are not religious holidays.The Jewish state was founded, in large part, by socialist, secular Jews like David Ben Gurion, who had received a Torah education in their childhood and youth but later broke off with tradition. For them, the Jewish state itself was sacred, as was the military, and the holidays they instituted reflect this approach.The religious-Zionist Mizrachi movement – currently represented in the Knesset by Bayit Yehudi – sees the Jewish state as a step in the direction of the redemption of the Jewish people, as predicted by the Torah. The members of the movement therefore ascribe deep meaning to Independence Day and Memorial Day, and Deputy Religions Minister Rabbi Eliyahu Ben-Dahan's instruction to religious councils to fly the flag on the upcoming holidays reflects this approach.Memorial Day for the IDF's Fallen Soldiers is gaining more profound meaning for the religious Zionist sector from year to year, as an increasingly large share of the IDF's combat ranks is filed by religious Zionists.

Canada's FM Meets Livni in Eastern Jerusalem, PA Fumes

Canada’s Foreign Minister meeting Justice Minister Livni in her eastern Jerusalem office is a "slap in the face", says PA official.

The Palestinian Authority is fuming after Canada’s Foreign Minister, John Baird, met Israel’s Justice Minister Tzipi Livni in her eastern Jerusalem office this week.Such a move is normally avoided by visiting diplomats since world countries do not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over eastern Jerusalem, which it liberated during the 1967 Six Day War."The visit is a slap in the face to the Palestinian people," former Palestinian Authority foreign minister Nabil Shaath wrote in a commentary published by Canada's daily Globe and Mail on Friday.Shaath, a Fatah Central Committee member in charge of international relations, called Baird's visit an "unprecedented recognition of the illegal Israeli annexation of Palestinians' occupied capital," adding that it undermines U.S. efforts to restart negotiations between Israel and the PA.Shaath said the "unprecedented offense" would cause "severe" damage to Canada's relations with the PA, the Arab world and those committed to a two-state solution to the decades-old conflict.Canadian foreign ministry spokesman Rick Roth told AFP on Thursday that Baird "wanted to get Livni's view on the Middle East peace process, given her new responsibilities and important role in the new cabinet."In addition to being appointed Justice Minister, Livni has been placed in charge of the peace negotiations with the PA."This doesn't change our longstanding position that all final status issues must be negotiated between the two parties. As guests, we were pleased to meet our hosts where it was most convenient for them," Roth told AFP.Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor  told AFP that "It is not common that foreign officials meet Israeli officials in east Jerusalem.”"The Canadians have been making a name for themselves by speaking out on the international scene in a way which is all too rare," Palmor added, saying they were demonstrating an unusual "courage and moral stance"."There should be nothing unusual about meeting Israel's justice minister in east Jerusalem (where the ministry is based). What is strange is that this is the exception," he said.Baird, meanwhile, was unfazed by the criticism, saying that where he has coffee with someone is “irrelevant” to the larger discussion of Middle East peace and does not signal a shift in Canadian foreign policy.“I’m just not interested in getting into the semantic argument about whether you have a meeting with one person on one side of the street [and] it’s OK, and you have a meeting on the other side of street and it’s not,” he said during a news conference in London, according to the Canadian Press.“We’re focused on trying to have an impact on the difficult and serious challenges, that being security for Israelis, an end to the conflict and the legitimate aspirations for a state from those in the Palestinian side,” added Baird.(Arutz Sheva’s North American Desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York. U.S. says agrees with China on peaceful North Korea solution

By Arshad Mohammed and Ben Blanchard
BEIJING (Reuters) - The United States said on Saturday that China had agreed to help rid North Korea of its nuclear capability by peaceful means, but Beijing made no specific commitment in public to pressure its long-time ally to change its ways.U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met China's top leaders in a bid to persuade them to push reclusive North Korea, whose main diplomatic supporter is Beijing, to scale back its belligerence and, eventually, return to nuclear talks.Visiting Beijing for the first time as secretary of state, Kerry has made no secret of his desire to see China take a more active stance towards North Korea, which in recent weeks has threatened nuclear war against the United States and South Korea.Kerry and China's top diplomat, State Councillor Yang Jiechi, said both countries supported the goal of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula."We are able, the United States and China, to underscore our joint commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in a peaceful manner," Kerry told reporters, sitting next to Yang at a state guesthouse in western Beijing.But North Korea has repeatedly said it will not abandon nuclear weapons which it described on Friday as its "treasured" guarantor of security.Yang said China's stance on maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula was clear and consistent, repeating phrasing used by the Foreign Ministry since the crisis began."We maintain that the issue should be handled and resolved peacefully through dialogue and consultation. To properly address the Korea nuclear issue serves the common interests of all parties. It is also the shared responsibility of all parties," he said, speaking through an interpreter.
"China will work with other relevant parties, including the United States, to play a constructive role in promoting the six-party talks and balanced implementation of the goals set out in the September 19 joint statement of 2005."The United States and its allies believe the North violated the 2005 aid-for-denuclearization deal by conducting a nuclear test in 2006 and pursuing a uranium enrichment program that would give it a second path to a nuclear weapon in addition to its plutonium-based program.Six-party aid-for-disarmament talks, involving the two Koreas, the United States, Japan, Russia and host China, collapsed in 2008 when the North walked away from the deal.Kerry declined to comment on what specifically China may do to push for a peaceful solution on North Korea, saying only that they had discussed all possibilities.At a news conference in Seoul on Friday and in a U.S.-South Korean joint statement issued on Saturday, Kerry signaled the U.S. preference for diplomacy, but stressed North Korea must take "meaningful" steps on denuclearization."We don't want to get into a threat for threat or ... some kind of confrontational language here. There's been enough of that," Kerry said in Beijing.If North Korea got rid of its nuclear capabilities, then the United States would have no reason to maintain recently deployed defensive capabilities - such as a missile defense system sent to Guam - he said."Now, obviously, if the threat disappears, i.e. North Korea denuclearizes, the same imperative does not exist at that point in time for us to have to have that kind of robust, forward leaning posture of defense."The Pentagon has in recent weeks responded to the North Korean threats by announcing plans to position two Aegis guided-missile destroyers in the western Pacific and a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system to Guam.
'CONSTRUCTIVE' TALKS
As the North's main trading partner, financial backer and the closest thing it has to a diplomatic ally, China had a unique ability to use its leverage against the impoverished, isolated state, Kerry said in Seoul before leaving for Beijing.China, which sided with North Korea in the 1950-53 civil war against the U.S.-backed South, has always been reluctant to apply pressure on Pyongyang, fearing instability if the North were to implode and send floods of refugees into China.It has also looked askance at U.S. military drills in South Korea.China's Xinhua news agency said in a commentary that Washington had itself been "fanning the flames" on the Korean peninsula with its shows of force."It keeps sending more fighters, bombers and missile-defense ships to the waters of East Asia and carrying out massive military drills with Asian allies in a dramatic display of preemptive power," it said.Chinese state television quoted Premier Li Keqiang as telling Kerry that rising tensions on the Korean peninsula were in nobody's interests, in apparent reference to both Washington and Pyongyang to dial down the war of words."All sides must bear responsibility for maintaining regional peace and stability and be responsible for the consequences," the television report paraphrased Li as saying."Disturbances and provocation on the peninsula and regionally will harm the interests of all sides, which is like lifting a rock only to drop it on one's feet."Still, U.S. officials believe China's rhetoric on North Korea has begun to shift, pointing to a recent speech by China's Xi in which - without referring explicitly to Pyongyang - he said no country "should be allowed to throw a region and even the whole world into chaos for selfish gain".Kerry's Asia trip, which includes a stop in Tokyo on Sunday before flying home on Monday, takes place after weeks of shrill North Korean threats of war since the imposition of new U.N. sanctions in response to its third nuclear test in February.North Korean television made no mention of Kerry's visit and devoted most of its reports to preparations for celebrations on Monday marking the birth date of state founder Kim Il-Sung.But Rodong Sinmun, the ruling Workers' Party's newspaper, issued a fresh denunciation of joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises, saying: "If the enemies dare provoke (North Korea) while going reckless, it will immediately blow them up with an annihilating strike with the use of powerful nuclear means."South Korea's Yonhap news agency, quoting a government source, said North Korea had not moved any of its mobile missile launchers for the past two days after media reports that as many as five missiles had been moved into place on the country's east coast. It said this suggested no launches were imminent.(Additional reporting by Terril Yue Jones in BEIJING and Ronald Popeski in SEOUL; Editing by Nick Macfie and Vicki Allen)

Pope Francis sets up a group of eight cardinals to advise him

Francis has taken a most significant decision by setting up a group of eight cardinals from all continents to advise him in governing the Catholic Church and reforming the Roman Curia

gerard o'connell vatican city
In a highly significant and ground-breaking move, indicating a new, more collegial style of leadership, Pope Francis has chosen a group of eight cardinals, from all continents and the Roman Curia, to act as his special advisors in governing the Catholic Church and reforming the Roman Curia. The Secretariat of State broke the news in a press statement on April 13, exactly one month after his election.  It said “The Holy Father, Francis, taking up a suggestion that emerged in the course of the General Congregations preceding the Conclave, has set up a group of Cardinals to advise him in the government of the universal Church and to study a project of revision of the Apostolic Constitution “Pastor Bonus” on the Roman Curia”.The Apostolic Constitution “Pastor Bonus”  referred to in the Vatican statement was issued by Pope John Paul II in 1988 and introduced reforms in the Roman Curia, the civil service that assists the Pope in the government of the Church.
The Vatican revealed the names of the eight cardinals chosen by Pope Francis:

  • AFRICA: Cardinal Laurent Monswengo Pasinya, 73, archbishop of Kinshasha in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, former president of SECAM – the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (1997-2003) and co-president of Pax Christi International (2007-2009);
  • ASIA: Cardinal Oswald Gracias, 68, archbishop of Bombay, India, the current President of the FABC, the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences;
  • EUROPE:  Cardinal Reinhard Marx, 69,  Archbishop of Munich and Freising, in the Federal Republic of Germany; Since 2012 he has been president of  COMECE - the Bishops Conferences of the European Community;
  • LATIN AMERICA:  Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa, 79, emeritus Archbishop of Santiago de Cile, Chile, he was president of  CELAM - the Council of Episcopal Conferences of Latin America ( 2003-2007);
  • NORTH AMERICA: Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, OFM, 66,   archbishop of Boston, US Bishops Conference;
  • OCEANIA: Cardinal George Pell, 71, the archbishop of Sydney, Australia;
  • ROMAN CURIA: Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, 70, the Italian-born Holy See diplomat and currently President of the Governorate of the Vatican City State;
  • COORDINATOR: Cardinal  Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, S.D.B.,70, archbishop of Tegucigapla, Honduras, will coordinate the Group..
  • SECRETARY: Bishop Marcello Semeraro of Albano diocese, Italy, will serve as the secretary of the group.
In the pre-conclave meetings, several cardinals spoke about the challenges the new pope would face in governing the Catholic Church and reforming the Roman Curia. Some suggested that it would be good if the new pope could develop a more collegial system of government by involving members of the College of Cardinals or of the Bishops Conferences to assist him in the monumental task of governance.  Pope Francis listened carefully and has taken the decision to establish a group of eight to act as his counselors.Pope Francis is a man of government. He knows how to take decisions, as his performance as Jesuit superior and later archbishop bishop in Argentina has shown.  Now he brings that skill to the Vatican, where it is much needed.An analysis of the eight cardinals chosen shows that seven have wide pastoral experience in governing dioceses and one is an experienced Holy See diplomat; they bring with them a rich and diverse field experience. They are not all like-minded men, and that too is a point in his favor. As in Buenos Aires, so too in Rome, he does not want to surround himself with ‘Yes’ men, he wants to avoid the ‘Groupthink” syndrome. He wants advisors who will tell him the truth, not simply tell him the things that they think or imagine he wants to hear. He wishes to listen to different points of view, so that he can reach good decisions for the benefit of the whole Church and of the wider world that it is called to serve. Pope Francis is already in contact with the cardinals, and the Group will meet for the first time on October 1-3, the Vatican said.

Pope Francis' reasons for deciding to appoint eight cardinal advisers

ANDREA TORNIELLI vatican city The decision, announced by Francis today, to set up a sort of “privy council” composed of eight cardinals from all five continents, represents the first concrete step in response to the pre-Conclave congregation discussions. The announcement comes on the day that marks a month since Francis was elected to the papacy. The eight cardinals have been given an open-ended mandate and their tasks will include making proposals for the long-awaited Curia reform and helping the Pope govern the universal Church.Theirs will not be a “commission”, just a work group with consultational powers. But it's an important sign as it shows that an attempt is being made to involve the group of cardinals, who – with the exception of the President of the Governorate, Giuseppe Bertello – are or were residential archbishops and held important roles in their respective bishops' conferences. Bertello was one of Bergoglio's big electors, he has extensive diplomatic experience, he was among the first to be received by the new Pope and he is one of the men tipped to gain leadership of the Secretariat of State. The other seven are the Archbishop Emeritus of Santiago de Chile, Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa; teh Archbishop of Bombay, Oswald Gracias; the Archbishop of Munich, Reinhard Marx; the Archbishop of Kinshasa, Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya; the Archbishop of Boston, Sean Patrick O'Malley; and the Archbishop of Sydney, George Pell. Finally, the second Latin American and workgroup coordinator, is the Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga. The bishop of Albano, Marcello Semeraro, will be the group's secretary.The work group will collaborate with Francis, “advise him on matetrs to do with the government of the universal church” and “prepare a project for the revision” of the apostolic constitution “Pastor Bonus”, which regulates the Curia's activities. Bergoglio's critics have already pointed out the peculiarity of this move given that a body to assist the Pope govern the Church already exists, in the form of the cardinals' consistory.It has become clear throughout the years that the consistory – the gathering of all cardinals – is not particularly active because of the number of its members. The Church could have put together a work group made up of Curia cardinals. The Pope, who appears intent on developing a stronger direct relationship with the heads of the Curia dicasteries, has chosen seven prelates out of eight who do not serve Rome, for this “privy council”. The work group is a way to involve local Churches more directly and at the same time have a flexible consultational tool that can meet a number of times a year or be consulted easily on urgent questions if the Pope deems it necessary. Church historian Alberto Melloni had mentioned this proposal a number of times.
The creation of the work group suggests the reform of the Curia will begin as soon as possible as cardinals clearly saw it as a priority in the discussions held before the conclave.

The Philadelphia (Horror) Story

By Karen Gushta , Op-Ed Contributor
April 12, 2013|6:42 pm

Horror stories have no appeal for me. Probably the last one I read was a required Edgar Allen Poe story in college. Since then I've assiduously avoided horror stories, novels, and movies-no Stephen King or Vincent Price for me!

There's one horror story unfolding in the news, however, that I think everyone should be following. That's the story of the trial of former abortionist, Kermit Gosnell. Gosnell is being tried for first-degree murder of seven newborn babies and murder in the third degree of a woman who died after a botched abortion.
The description of the conditions inside the building where Gosnell carried out his grisly trade read like the setting of a truly gruesome horror story. As Gary Bauer reported on a blog for The Weekly Standard (4/3/2013):When the FBI raided Gosnell's facility in February 2010, they found it littered with animal feces, blood-stained furniture, and unwashed and unsterilized medical instruments. According to an FBI agent, at one point during the search, Gosnell returned to the clinic office to resume being interviewed and have some dinner. "He came back and ate his food still wearing the bloody, torn latex gloves," the agent testified.Investigators also found baby body parts in bags in a freezer and a collection of baby feet in bottles.
Reading these reports staggers the imagination. But what is equally staggering is that Gosnell's "abortuary"-it certainly couldn't be called a clinic-had not been inspected for more than 17 years!
Follow us
According to the 281-page grand jury report prepared on his case in January 2011,After 1993…the Pennsylvania Department of Health abruptly decided, for political reasons, to stop inspecting abortion clinics at all. The politics in question were not anti-abortion, but pro. With the change of administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials concluded that inspections would be "putting a barrier up to women" seeking abortions. (pg. 12) Tom Ridge was a popular governor and easily won re-election in 1998 with 57 percent of the vote in a four-way race. But in spite of being a Roman Catholic, he was known as a "pro-choice Republican" and during his two terms, no one from the state health department was checking on Kermit Gosnell.Apparently, until he was investigated, Gosnell had no fear that anyone would come in to see what condition his offices were in or check on whether he was abiding by Pennsylvania state law, which does not allow abortions after 24 weeks. As the grand jury report states:Gosnell routinely relied on unlicensed and untrained staff to treat patients, conduct medical tests, and administer medications without supervision. Even more alarmingly, Gosnell instructed unlicensed workers to sedate patients with dangerous drugs in his absence.... In addition, he regularly performed abortions beyond the 24-week limit prescribed by law. As a result, viable babies were born. Gosnell killed them by plunging scissors into their spinal cords. He taught his staff to do the same.
According to an Associated Press report (3/20/2013), on the second day of the trial a woman who had worked for Gosnell admitted that she carried out Gosnell's instructions to cut the necks of at least 10 babies after they were delivered. Gosnell and another employee would regularly "snip" the spines of babies "to ensure fetal demise," she said.The AP story reported that woman sobbed as she recounted that she took a cellphone picture of one baby (identified as "Baby A") that was bigger than any she had seen aborted before. She said that Gosnell later joked that the baby was so big he could have walked to the bus stop.
Nevertheless, Gosnell's defense lawyer, Jack McMahon, is disputing that any babies were born alive and is challenging the gestational age of the aborted babies. The grand jury's report, however, includes information from an ultrasound on Baby A done by Gosnell's employee, Kareema Cross, that "recorded a gestational age of 29.4 weeks," (about 7.5 months). The report states:After the baby was expelled, Cross noticed that he was breathing, though not for long. After about 10 to 20 seconds, while the mother was asleep, "the doctor just slit the neck," said Cross. Gosnell put the boy's body in a shoebox. Cross described the baby as so big that his feet and arms hung out over the sides of the container. Cross said that she saw the baby move after his neck was cut, and after the doctor placed it in the shoebox. Gosnell told her, "[I]t's the baby's reflexes. It's not really moving."But the report also includes testimony by a neonatologist who stated that this was false. Not only does movement indicate the baby was alive, he would feel a "tremendous amount of pain" when his spinal cord was severed. "So, the fact that Baby Boy A continued to move after his spinal cord was cut with scissors means that he did not die instantly. Maybe the cord was not completely severed. In any case, his few moments of life were spent in excruciating pain."The horror story of Kermit Gosnell's activities in his West Philadelphia abortion center should be getting major network news coverage. But it is not.In a column in USA Today (4/11/2013), Kirsten Powers noted, "A Lexis-Nexis search shows none of the news shows on the three major national television networks has mentioned the Gosnell trial in the last three months. The exception is when Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan hijacked a segment on Meet the Press meant to foment outrage over an anti-abortion rights law in some backward red state."
Nothing has changed since Media Research Center president Brent Bozell wrote in a March 26 column, "It's unbelievable that Dr. Gosnell's trial for his actions inside his 'house of horrors' haven't drawn one network story."It's hard to believe that media outlets are ignoring what investigators found at the now shuttered site. Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue told LifeNews.com (4/8/2013), "What the police found inside Gosnell's building literally made them vomit." Newman says they found stacks of dead bodies reminiscent of Nazi-era horrors. "Except the dead bodies were not adults. They were precious little babies who were born alive."Newman is urging pro-life advocates to bring attention to the trial by whatever means they can including social media, letters to the editor, and radio call-in talk shows.Dr. Karen Gushta is a writer and researcher for Truth in Action Ministries (formerly Coral Ridge Ministries).
