Days of Awe Begin Sunday Evening with the New Year Holiday

Rosh haShanah

The Jewish People begin the High Holydays, or Days of Awe, on Sunday evening, on the first of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, ushering in the year 5773 with nearly a month of special days: Two days of Rosh Hashannah on Monday and Tuesday, the Fast of Gedaliah on Wednesday and then Shabbat Shuva, the Sabbath of Repentance. Rosh Hashannah is also the start of the Ten Days of Repentance which culminate with the solemn Fast of Yom Kippur on the tenth day of Tishrei. Special verses about repentance are added to the silent Amidah prayer said three times daily during these ten days. Sukkoth, or Tabernacles, the holiday of joy, follows five days later.The preceding month of Elul has been dedicated to effecting change and approaching G-d. The shofar was sounded each morning after services, and Psalm 27 alluding to all three holidays was recited daily (and is continued till the end of Sukkot). Selichot, throughout the month in the Sephardi community and for the past week in the Ashkenazi community, were said at dawn.

Teshuvah, Repentance

This is Judaism's time for introspection, when Jews look back and examine their actions in the year that has just ended, seeking to improve their observance of the Torah’s commandments directed towards G-d and towards their fellow man. They are expected to ask forgiveness from those they may have offended or hurt during the past year, a stipulation for Heavenly forgiveness for sins towards one's fellow man.Repentance includes several steps: recognition of the sin, confessing the sin, and resolving not to repeat it in the future. Many books and articles have been written on how to do teshuva, repentance, with the basic text being Maimonides' "Hilkhot Teshuva" [The Laws of Teshuva, ed.]. Rabbi Joseph Ber Soloveitchik's "Al Hateshuva", based on Maimonides' work, has become a classic text.  Both works, and many others, are available in English.Rabbi Chaim Druckman, venerable head of Or Etzion Yeshiva, formerly MK, head of all the hesder yeshivas and the Conversion Authority, said Monday at a study day about the Days of Awe that repentance, or teshuva, is a return to a person's source.

Fast of Gedaliah and Shabbt Shuvah

The Fast of Gedaliah commemorates the end of Jewish rule in the Land of Israel following the destruction of the First Holy Temple some 2,500 years ago, prompting the sages to say that the death of a righteous man is equivalent to the destruction of the Temple.On the Sabbath of Repentance this coming Saturday, a special chapter is read from the book of the prophet Hosea, calling the Jewish people to repent and return to G-d. Rabbis traditionally deliver a sermon, drasha, on repentance, in the afternoon.

Observing The New Year Holiday

The Jewish New Year has several names, among them the Day of Remembrance and the Day of Judgment. It is a time for careful stock-taking of one's relationship with G-d, and the longer Rosh Hashannah morning prayers filled with emotion, responsive readings and songs, are therefore intense and inspirational – usually led by a carefully chosen cantor or member of the congregation - concentrating on G-d's Kingship, eternal presence and His judgment of all creatures.“Repentance, prayer and charity avert the evil decree” is a central line from the Machzor, the special holiday prayer book, listing the course of action that it is hoped will lead to meriting  a good year.Upon returning home after the evening prayers, symbolic foods – simanim - are served, whose names in Hebrew allow a play on words. They include pomegranates (for our merits to be numerous) , beets and carrots (for our enemies to be destroyed) that we lead rather than follow (fish head).

There are especially sweet ones, such as apples dipped in honey, to symbolize a sweet year. In Israel, many Ashkenazim have adopted the more varied simanim of their Sephardi neighbors, adding to their traditional fish head, carrots, pomegranates, beets and apples, the more exotic ruvia, kara, and more. Booklets are available with the lists and special sayings for each food.Fruits that require a special Shehecheyanu blessing, said for something new, because they are being eaten for the first time since the previous season, are served on the second night. Pomegranates are often used for this purpose. Traditionally, children - adults too -wear a new garment for the first time the second night which calls for saying the blessing. Candles are lit both nights, but it is forbidden to light a match on the holiday, so an existing flame is used to kindle them and the Shehecheyanu blessing said while lighting on the second night, somewhat questionable as this is one long holiday and not a new one, is intended to also cover the new fruit and clothes.Another name for the holiday is Day of Sounding the Shofar. Based on the commandment in Numbers 29:1, 100 shofar blasts are dramatically sounded throughout the prayers, "awakening" us to improve our ways. The congregation refrains from speech from the first shofar blasts until the last ones at the end of the service..The Tashlikh prayer is recited on the first afternoon, preferably near a live stream of water in which we ask G-d to "throw away" our sins.

In Israel

Many religious Israeli youth spend the holiday at secular kibbutzim to lead the services, volunteer to lead services in the IDF and in hospitals.The IDF is prepared with tons of honey and apples, has received Rosh Hashannah cards from hundreds of kindergarteners, but is also on careful guard to keep synagogues and residents secure on the holiday.  Breslover Hassidim and others continue a custom of going to Uman, Ukraine, to pray at the gravesite synagogues of their spiritual leader, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, who passed away in Tishrei of 1810. Prominent rabbis, however, oppose the idea of leaving the Holy Land to spend Rosh Hashanah in the Diaspora.On the  Fast of Yom Kippur, the most solemn day of the Jewish year, the Kol Nidrei prayer ushers in the holiday at night and a shofar blast signals its end the next night. It is customary to begin building the sukkah for the seven (or nine in the Diaspora) days of that happy festival, right after the fast, so as to perform a mitzvah as soon as possible.

Three Arab youths were caught Saturday night desecrating Jewish holy books at a sacred Jewish cemetery in Jerusalem. The vandals were in the process of trying to burn several Tehillim – volumes of the Book of Psalms authored by the Biblical King David – at the ancient Mount of Olives Cemetery.The three perpetrators, Arab teens about 16 years old, are residents of the Arab neighborood adjacent to the cemetery. All were arrested; two confessed to the crime, and the third was also found to have been involved although he continued to deny it. Police told reporters they plan to expedite prosecution of the case.

When a controversial Florida-based Christian cleric burned the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an in 2010, the incident sparked worldwide rage and violent riots by Muslims around the globe. One week ago, an obscure, amateur video clip produced by an individual in the U.S. mocking the life of the Prophet Mohammed, founder of Islam, sparked massive violent attacks against U.S. and other Western diplomatic missions around the world as well.A U.S. Ambassdor, three American diplomats and two U.S. Marines were murdered and diplomatic missions in Yemen, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and Sudan were badly damaged by Muslim extremists last week -- all using the "insulting" video clip as the excuse.The Mount of Olives cemetery is an ancient, sacred Jewish burial ground still used today for interrment of modern rabbinic leaders along side holy Torah sages dating back thousands of years. The great Torah Sage and head of the worldwide Lithuanian hareidi-religious yeshiva world, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv was laid to rest at the cemetery earlier this summer, when he passed away at age 102. Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the modern State of Israel, is among the righteous Jewish leaders who are interred at the cemetery.But there have been numerous reports in various news outlets – including Arutz Sheva – noting complaints about countless incidents of Arab vandalism, desecration and attacks on Jews at and near the site. Some examples:This past July, Arabs in a car who struck a vehicle with Jewish passengers near the cemetery got out of their car and began to attack the Jewish driver and his daughter. The lone police officer present was unable to stop the violence and was forced to call for backup. In a separate incident, a Jew who visited his grandfather's grave at the cemetery in June was horrified to discover local Arabs had used the cemetery as a place to throw out trash and burn household waste.In February, U.S. Representatives Elliot Engel and Jerry Nadler, and Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of American Jewish Organizations Malcolm Hoenlein were attacked by Arab rock throwers during their own visit to the Mount of Olives. The two lawmakers and Hoenlein all noted past video evidence of Arab vandalism and desecration at the Jewish holy site. Charley J. Levine, adviser to the Preservation Committee in Israel, told Arutz Sheva at the time, “This is not a freak occurrence. This sort of vicious vandalism and desecration occurs at Har HaZeitim (Mount of Olives) every single day – some orchestrated, and some spontaneous."

Israel says U.S. must be firm on stopping Iran nuclear threat

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A senior Israeli official said on Sunday the United States should not wait for Iran to decide on building a nuclear weapon before it considers military action against the Islamic Republic

"When is the point at which it should be stopped? Just when the bomb is assembled on the tip of the missile and is ready for launch?" Dan Meridor, deputy Israeli prime minister with responsibility for nuclear and intelligence affairs, said in a radio interview.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who sees a mortal threat to Israel from Tehran, has hinted he could resort to war unless Washington and other world powers give Iran an ultimatum on curbing its uranium enrichment programme.U.S. President Barack Obama has rebuffed Netanyahu's lobbying, opening a rift between the allies although they agree that Iran has yet to take the final steps of purifying uranium to military grade and assembling a warhead.Tehran denies seeking the bomb, saying its nuclear projects are for peaceful energy and medical purposes. A group of Arab protesters in the northern Israeli city of Akko had one message for the world on Friday, Channel 2 News reported.
“Only a large and strong Muslim state can calm the rage,” the report quoted several dozen Arab demonstrators in the city as having said.The Arabs were part of a group who demonstrated after Friday prayers in Akko against an anti-Islam film that has sparked outrage in the Muslim world.Channel 2 reported that some of the protesters called out “Osama bin Laden” and “Al-Qaeda.” They also claimed that “Jews and Christians can live in peace under the wings of Islam around the world.”The protesters also reportedly called out “Obama is a coward” and “the prophet Mohammed is above all.”Meanwhile, hundreds of worshipers on the Temple Mount started throwing rocks after Friday prayers and began a procession to the Damascus Gate area, in an attempt to reach the U.S. consulate in east Jerusalem. Police prevented the Arabs from reaching their destination. Several officers were injured by rocks that were thrown at them.
AFP reported that anti-U.S. protests erupted across the Muslim world, as violence exploded in Sudan, Lebanon and Yemen leaving two people dead and dozens wounded.In Khartoum, guards on the roof of the U.S. embassy fired warning shots as a security perimeter was breached by dozens of Islamic flag-waving protesters, part of a crowd of thousands who had earlier stormed the British embassy and set fire to the German mission, an AFP reporter said.A police vehicle near the embassy was also torched as hundreds of demonstrators broke through an outer security cordon after one protester was hit by a police vehicle and killed, a medic and the reporter said.Violence also erupted in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, where a crowd of 300 Islamists attacked and set fire to a KFC restaurant, sparking clashes with police in which one person died and 25 were injured, sources told AFP.The attack on the U.S. fast-food chain's outlet came as Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Lebanon for a three-day visit, calling for Christian-Muslim coexistence and attacking religious extremism.Meanwhile in Yemen's capital Sanaa, security forces fired warning shots and water cannon to disperse crowds of protesters trying to reach the U.S. embassy.Yemeni security forces blocked all roads to the mission, after similar confrontations left four people dead on Thursday, an AFP reporter said.In Cairo, where the first protests against the film broke out on Tuesday, protesters again clashed with police outside the U.S. embassy, although calm returned later after the Muslim Brotherhood withdrew a call for nationwide demonstrations, saying it wanted to avoid loss of life and damage to property.
In Iran, meanwhile, thousands of people yelling "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" rallied in central Tehran.State television showed the crowd streaming out after Friday prayers at Tehran University in which a hardline cleric, Ayatollah Ahmad Janati, blamed the United States for the crude film, "Innocence of Muslims," in which actors have strong American accents, which portrays Muslims as immoral and gratuitously violent.

President Barack Obama rejected, during his phone conversation with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, an appeal by Netanyahu to spell out a specific “red line” that Iran could not cross in its nuclear program, a senior administration official has told The New York Times.The official said this deepens the divide between the allies over how to deal with Iran’s nuclear ambitions.According to the official, in the hour long telephone conversation on Tuesday night, Obama deflected Netanyahu’s proposal to make the size of Iran’s stockpile of close-to-bomb-grade uranium the threshold for a military strike by the United States against its nuclear facilities.Obama, the official told The New York Times, repeated the assurances he gave to. Netanyahu in March that the United States would not allow Iran to manufacture a nuclear weapon. The president was unwilling to agree on any specific action by Iran, like reaching a defined threshold on nuclear material, or failing to adhere to a deadline on negotiations, that would lead to American military action.
“We need some ability for the president to have decision-making room,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the delicacy of the talks, told The New York Times. “We have a red line, which is a nuclear weapon. We’re committed to that red line.”Israeli officials, however, say this guarantee may not be enough for Israel, which Iranian leaders have repeatedly threatened with annihilation. BRUSSELS - The European Parliament is fighting for a bigger say in shaping the eurozone banking supervisor in a move which could hurt Spain.Putting the eurozone's banks and national supervisors under the ultimate authority of the European Central Bank (ECB) should have been a relatively easy task, or so EU leaders thought back in June. This was Germany's precondition for agreeing that ailing banks may access the eurozone fund directly, a demand made by Spain so that the €100 billion loan from the eurozone could be taken off its government debt.The plan was to get a final deal in December, so that the new authority can start early 2013 and Spain's debt be alleviated soon afterwards.But a turf war between the European Parliament and the EU Council representing member states over who has the final say on the freshly tabled legislation is likely to derail the calendar way beyond December.From a legal point of view, the European Parliament has an equal footing with the Council only when it comes to the existing European Banking Authority (EBA) - a two-year old umbrella organisation of national banking supervisors in all 27 member states.EBA legislation also has to be amended so as to explain how it will relate to the new supervisor in the eurozone. Voting rights within EBA will be a tricky negotiation, as the 10 non-euro states led by Great Britain fear that the eurozone 'superstate' will overrule them in disputes.The other legislative proposal, regarding the re-organisation of the ECB and its relation to national supervisors, is to be decided by unanimity within the Council, with the parliament having only a consultative role."There is a clear legal base, article 127, and it does not refer to co-decision," Olivier Bailly, spokesman for the EU commission said during a press conference on Thursday (13 September).The members of the European Parliament responsible for these dossiers have already announced that they want the two draft laws to be dealt with as a "package," however.
"If we are serious about the need for more democratic accountability, Parliament needs to have co-decision powers for this proposal," Belgian centre-right MEP Marianne Thyssen said in a press statement.
German Green MEP Sven Giegold, who will be responsible for the draft bill amending the London-based EBA, told this website that "we will treat the two files together, there will be no separate meetings in the negotiations.""It all depends on how much the two sides will compromise, but we are willing to do everything as fast as possible. When it comes to risks of banking crises, thoroughness is more important than speed," he added.Asked whether he shares the worry of some EU diplomats that Spain will run into trouble if there will be no deal by December, Giegold said: "I don't see Spain as a casualty, the current fund is big enough and they have not made the requests yet for bank recapitalisation. This condition to link the ESM and direct bank recapitalisation with European supervision was voted by the council. So it's them who have to speed up."
EU officials point to the fact that most anti-crisis legislation which was supposed to come quickly into force is stuck in the European Parliament: the draft law on obliging banks to hold more capital is blocked because MEPs and member states cannot agree on how to limit bonuses for bankers."The debate will be tense. It is not because Council defends its turf, but because MEPs take so long. We simply cannot lose another year," one EU diplomat told journalists on Wednesday.

Nadine becomes hurricane in Atlantic, away from US

MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Nadine has become a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, but that it poses no threat to land.Nadine's maximum sustained winds late Friday were 75 mph (121 kph), making it a Category 1 hurricane.Nadine is centered about 725 miles (1167 kilometers) east of Bermuda and is moving north-northeast at 14 mph (23 kph), taking it farther away from the U.S.
Nadine is the eighth hurricane of the Atlantic season.In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Kristy is slowly weakening with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph (121 kph). Kristy is centered about 275 miles (443 kilometers) west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California and is northwest at 9 mph (14 kph).

Japan Air, ANA Cancel Flights as Super Typhoon Nears Okinawa

All Nippon Airways Co. (9202) and Japan Airlines Co. (9201) canceled flights to Okinawa and the nearby island of Amamioshima today as typhoon Sanba approached the area southwest of the main Japanese islands.All Nippon, also known as ANA, stopped flights to Okinawa and Miyakojima airports and said its Kagoshima hub on the island of Kyushu will be affected tomorrow, according to the Tokyo- based carrier’s website. Japan Airlines canceled 34 flights connecting Tokyo and Osaka with Okinawa and Amamioshima, which will affect about 8,250 people, it said in a faxed statement.Sanba is about 350 kilometers (215 miles) south of Okinawa, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center said on its website as of 4 p.m. in Tokyo. It has sustained winds of about 125 miles per hour, gusting to 155 mph, according to the center.Sanba is on course to pass over Okinawa tonight and tomorrow, and make landfall in South Korea on Sept 17.

CAIRO (AP) — Christians gathered Friday in front of a Cairo cathedral holding signs denouncing a film that mocked the Prophet Muhammad amid fears that Muslims will take out their anger on Egypt's minority community.The country's 8 million Coptic Christians were already feeling increasingly cornered amid the rise to power of hard-line Islamists in Egypt following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.Now U.S. authorities have identified a self-described Coptic Christian living in California as the key figure behind the inflammatory film, and the community at home fears it will bear the brunt of the blame."We are afraid the anger will engulf us," said Monier Hanna, a 58-year-old Coptic government employee who says he saw two unveiled Christian women being harassed over the movie by Muslim men in his middle-class district of Helwan on Thursday.
"They were telling the women they are responsible for the film," he said.Mira Girgis, a 23-year-old Copt and recent college graduate, said she feels insecure."I can't go to church alone; my brother must be with me. I can't go out at night. When I return from work, a male — either my father or brother — must be waiting for me at the subway station," she said. "Being a Christian ... is hard in Egypt in these conditions."A Christian journalist, Caroline Kamel, wrote in the Shorouk daily Friday that she and her family came under attack at a bus terminal in Cairo and another city over the film. Syria envoy warns conflict a threat to world peace

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The new international envoy tasked with ending Syria's civil war said Saturday he still had no clear idea on how to proceed, but that it was "terribly important" to end a conflict that he warned was now a threat to regional and world peace.Lakhdar Brahimi's bleak comments followed his first meeting with President Bashar Assad since taking up the job he himself has called "nearly impossible."

Brahimi replaced former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan who left the job in frustration in August after his efforts failed to stem a conflict that started in March 2011 with an uprising to topple Assad.
Speaking to reporters at a news conference in Damascus Saturday, Brahimi said the crisis in Syria is "very dangerous," and the gap between the political parties widening."I repeat that I currently don't have a plan. We will build a working plan after listening to all internal, regional and international parties, hoping this plan would open the way for the salvation of Syria," Brahimi said.The veteran Algerian diplomat's three-day visit to Syria that began Thursday has involved meetings with both officials and opposition leaders. He says the goal is to help him plan his initiative to end the crisis.Assad reiterated his country's "full commitment" to cooperate with any efforts to end the crisis in Syria as long as those efforts are "neutral and independent," according to the state-run news agency SANA. He said any efforts would need to focus on pressuring countries that "finance and train terrorists and smuggle weapons into Syria to halt such acts."Syrian authorities blame the uprising on a foreign conspiracy and accuse Gulf countries Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the U.S, other Western countries, and Turkey, of offering funding and training to the rebels, whom they describe as "terrorists."The Syrian president also said his government was "serious" in its call for a dialogue among all Syrians — a call that has been repeatedly rejected by the opposition which is adamant that any dialogue should be restricted to talks on Assad stepping down.Brahimi's trip comes amid continued violence in the country's largest city, Aleppo, and the outskirts of the capital, Damascus. Activists said regime forces shelled Aleppo and clashed with rebels outside Damascus.The violence has left the Assad government isolated internationally, although Iran, China and Russia support it."It's a very, very serious and dangerous crisis. It's terribly important and urgent to address it in a proper manner," Brahimi said.He said the conflict, which according to activists has killed around 23,000 people, posed a "threat to Syria, the region and the entire world." Three dead as protesters attack US embassy in Tunisia

TUNIS (Reuters) - At least three people died and 28 others were wounded on Friday after police fought hundreds of protesters who ransacked the U.S. embassy in Tunisia in their fury over a film denigrating the Prophet Mohammad, state television said.A Reuters reporter saw police open fire to try to quell the assault, in which protesters forced their way past riot police into the embassy.The protesters smashed windows, hurled petrol bombs and stones at police from inside the embassy, or started fires in the embassy and the compound. A black plume of smoke rose from the facility.One protester was seen throwing a computer out of a window, while others walked away with telephones and computers.A Tunisian security officer near the compound said the embassy had not been staffed on Friday, and calls to the embassy went unanswered. A Reuters reporter saw two armed U.S. soldiers on the rooftop.The protesters, many of whom were Islamic Salafists, also set fire to the nearby American School, which was closed at the time, and took away laptops and tablet computers.The protests began after Friday prayers and followed a rallying call on Facebook by Islamist activists that was quickly endorsed by the local faction of the Islamic militant group Ansar al-Sharia.
Libyan officials suspect the Libyan branch of Ansar al-Sharia of being behind an attack in Benghazi in which four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, were killed on Tuesday.The moderate Islamist Ennahda movement, which heads the Tunis government, had advised Tunisians against participating in the protest against the crude, low-budget film, made in California and trailed online, which portrayed the Muslim prophet engaged in vulgar and offensive behaviour."The (Tunisian) government does not accept these acts of aggression against foreign diplomatic missions," said a statement read on state television. It said Tunisian authorities were "committed to ensuring the safety of foreign diplomatic missions".Hundreds of protesters wielding petrol bombs, stones and sticks had charged at the security forces protecting the embassy before jumping a wall to invade the compound."Obama, Obama, we are all Osamas," they chanted, in reference to the slain al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden.The protesters pulled down the U.S. flag flying over the embassy, burned it, and replaced it with a black flag emblazoned with the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith.Riot police finally drove the protesters from the embassy and the compound, and a Reuters reporter saw them arresting around 60.The compound was cordoned off by police, soldiers and members of the elite presidential guard, but clashes continued in the el-Aouina district across a highway from the smart Auberge du Lac neighbourhood where the embassy is located.

NEW YORK – The Coptic Christian community in Egypt now is under threat of mass slaughter from Islamists under the pretense of revenge for a movie that depicts the Quranic figure Muhammad in a negative light, a senior Egyptian military official told WND.The producers of the “Innocence of Muslims” movie reportedly are tied to the Coptic faith. Reports are claiming the movie sparked anti-U.S. attacks in Egypt and Libya, including the killing this week of the U.S. ambassador to Libya. However, some security officials believe the violence to be premeditated.The Egyptian military official said today that Islamic groups are threatening to slaughter “the whole Christian Coptic community” in the city of Naja Hamadi, located about 60 miles from Cairo. Naja Hamadi contains a large Coptic community.Two Egyptian immigrants from Southern California reportedly were forces behind the “Innocence of Muslims” movie. Joseph Nassralla Abdelmasih, the president of the Duarte-based charity Media for Christ, reportedly was a producer, while Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, a convicted felon, allowed his home to be used in the movie’s shooting.
Due to the Coptic ties of the two men, police in Los Angeles reportedly stepped up patrols around Coptic Christian houses of worship in the city, according to the LA Times. Similarly, the police presence was reportedly heightened outside Coptic churches in New York City.Copts in Egypt have reportedly been concerned about the prospects of persecution after the downfall of U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak resulted in the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in the country’s parliament, presidency and military.While Copts were targeted by Islamists during Mubarak’s regime, such persecution has increased exponentially since Mubarak’s ouster.Just weeks after Mubarak was booted, Muslim villagers in March 2011 reportedly set fire to a Coptic church while attacking Christians on the street.Since last year, two other churches were set on fire in the Imbaba neighborhood of Cairo and in Edfu in the south of the country. Coptic Christian families were also reportedly evicted from their homes in Alexandria.Some reports say more than 200,000 Copts already have fled their homes.When Copts attempted to protest last October, security forces reportedly fired at the protesters, killing 24 and wounding more than 300 people.The Coptic Church, a major Christian community in Egypt, is said to date back to the origins of Christianity. Christians were the majority in Egypt until several centuries after the Arab conquest of the seventh century. They now make up between 5 and 10 percent of the population.

Police visit Nakoula Bassely Nakoula over 'film link'

US police have visited the home of a California resident who admitted involvement in the film which sparked anti-US riots in the Arab world.Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, of Cerritos, California, is said to be a Coptic Christian of Egyptian origin.He told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he was the manager for the company that produced the film.But he has denied being "Sam Bacile", credited as the writer and director of the film.However, the Associated Press says police now believe Mr Nakoula was in fact the director of Innocence of Muslims.Police were photographed entering and leaving Mr Nakoula's house on Wednesday night.The front door of the property is said to resemble a door used in the controversial film.

A spokesman for the sheriff's department in Cerritos refused to confirm Mr Nakoula's link to the film, telling the BBC: "All we are doing is providing safety for anybody that needs it."The obscure film mocked Muslims and the Prophet Muhammad. It was shown to tiny audiences in Los Angeles in June, but has since achieved notoriety online.A clip of the film dubbed into Arabic has been blamed for sparking protests at US missions in Egypt, Libya, and Yemen.US Ambassador J Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died in an attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.Unconfirmed reports suggest the Libya attack could have been planned ahead of the appearance of the film.
Mystery film The exact origin of the film and the internet clip, and the motivation behind its production, remains a mystery.
A man saying he was the writer and director, and claiming to be called Sam Bacile, spoke to a number of media outlets on Tuesday, making inflammatory anti-Islamic comments in support of the film.
He claimed to be 52, or 56, depending on the source, and to be an Israeli-born Jewish estate agent.

The most offensive comments about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad had been quite obviously dubbed onto the soundtrack afterwards and not spoken by the actors, the BBC's Alastair Leithead reports.Cindy Lee Garcia, from Bakersfield in California, was quoted by the website Gawker saying she had a small role in a film which she was told would be called Desert Warriors, about life in Egypt 2,000 years ago.She threatened to sue the director for the way the actors were represented."I said why did you do this, why did you do this to us Sam," she told CBS on Wednesday. "He said no this is not your fault. He said, you tell the world that I did this. That I wrote this script."The extent of any involvement by Mr Nakoula in the film's production is not yet clear.However, court documents related to a criminal prosecution in 2010 show him using aliases including Nicola Bacily, Robert Bacily and Erwin Salameh.He pleaded no contest to federal bank fraud charges in California. US prosecutors said he set up fraudulent bank accounts using stolen identifies and Social Security numbers.In addition to restitution and 21 months in federal prison, Mr Nakoula was ordered not to use computers or the internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, AP reported.

U.S. and other foreign embassies have come under fresh assault in the capitals of several predominantly Muslim states as mobs continued to rage against a video made in the United States that ridiculed the Prophet Muhammad. Violent protests have broken out in a number of countries since the September 11 killing in Libya of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other embassy employees when armed individuals led a rocket and gun attack that destroyed the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.In Washington, a White House spokesman said President Barack Obama had spoken to regional leaders across the Middle East to ensure the security of U.S. diplomats and missions.Press Secretary Jay Carney rejected the notion that the protests opposed U.S. policies. "This is a fairly volatile situation and it is in response not to United States policy, not to obviously the administration, not the American people," Carney said. "It is in response to a video, a film that we have judged to be reprehensible and disgusting, [but] that in no way justifies any violent reaction to it."Meanwhile, the remains of the four Americans killed in Benghazi have arrived in the United States. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden joined Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta at Andrews Air Force Base for a ceremony to honor the four.U.S. officials are investigating whether the assault on the U.S. mission was a coordinated attack by militants that took advantage of protests in Muslim countries over a video mocking Islam.

Protest Deaths

With anger over the anti-Islamic film trailer spilling over into a fourth day on September 14, at least one protester was reported killed by police in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, after protesters scaled the outer wall of the U.S. Embassy.A crowd also broke into the compound of the German Embassy and set fires and broke windows, and attacked the British Embassy."When they insult our belief, our religion, under the slogan of freedom and democracy, we say to hell with freedom and democracy when it touches the religions and faiths or people," one Sudanese protester told Reuters.In Berlin, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle condemned the attack on their embassy."I sharply condemn the attacks on the German Embassy in Khartoum," Westerwelle said. "I demand from the Sudanese authorities that the safety of the German Embassy will be guaranteed immediately. I condemn this anti-Islamic hate video; but still, this cannot be a justification for the outbreak of violence. This violence must stop immediately."In Tunisia, protesters stormed the grounds of the U.S. Embassy, and scenes showed smoke coming from a fire inside the embassy compound.Official media citing the Tunisian Health Ministry said that three people had been killed and another 28 wounded in the clashes. Two of the injured reportedly were in a critical condition.There were reports of an American school being set on fire in Tunis.Security forces in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, used water cannon and warning shots to disperse several hundred protesters trying to reach the U.S. Embassy. There were no reports of injuries. The Pentagon confirmed that U.S. marines had been dispatched to Sanaa to protect the embassy.Elsewhere in Sanaa, tens of thousands of demonstrators protested peacefully against the film. An imam leading prayers at the protest condemned an attack on the U.S. Embassy in the city on September 13, saying it "insulted Islam" as much as the movie did.

Clashes and demonstrations were also reported in Lebanon, India, Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Skirmishes also broke out in Egypt on September 14, where the Muslim Brotherhood initially called for nationwide "peaceful protests" but later rescinded its decision out of fear of violence.The group added that the United States is not responsible for the film.Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi went on state television and called on Egyptians to protect foreign embassies. He denounced the September 11 killings in Libya of the Americans.Libya temporarily closed its airspace over Benghazi on September 14 due to security concerns. Deputy Minister of Transport Fawzi Beltamr told state media all flights to and from that eastern city had been suspended after gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the airport. He said flights resumed after the area around the airport was secured.

'Heinous Crime'

Some 200 Indonesians protested peacefully outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta on September 14, shouting "Death to America!" Ismail Yusanto, a spokesman for the pan-Islamic Hizb ut-Tahrir organization in Indonesia, called on Washington to take action against the film."We urge the United States to stop the film and destroy it," he said.At a protest in the Iraqi port city of Basra, tribal leader Sheikh Abu Kifah al-Bakhatri also expressed outrage."Basra's tribes call for the closure of the American and British consulates and denounce the insult to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon Him," he said Thousands protested in Tehran, and on September 13 Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged the United States to punish those guilty of "this heinous crime."A few hundred people protested near the Afghan city of Jalalabad. And in the eastern Nangarhar Province, protesters burned an effigy of U.S. President Barack Obama as well as U.S. flags.A senior Afghan cleric in Kabul said the movie is "the work of American Jews." Imam Enayatullah Baleegh said U.S. President Barack Obama "should be held responsible" because he "could not control such an insulting act."

Purported Filmmaker Says 'No Regrets'

In India, the Internet company Google has blocked local access to the popular YouTube video website to prevent people there from viewing excerpts of the film. The company did not say if the Indian authorities had requested the action.The video has already been blocked in Libya and Egypt.Speaking on a U.S. Arabic radio station on September 14, the man who claims to have produced the film said he has "no regrets" about making the movie, despite the ongoing violence.But Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian-born Coptic Christian who lives in the United States, said he was "saddened" and "feels guilty" about the deaths of Stevens and others.He said the United States had nothing to do with his film but is "suffering the consequences" of its production.Nakoula said people should view the entire film before passing judgment on it.With reporting by AP, AFP, dpa, and Reuters

QE3: Helicopter Ben Bernanke Unleashes An All-Out Attack On The U.S. Dollar

You can’t accuse Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke of not living up to his nickname.  Back in 2002, Bernanke delivered a speech entitled “Deflation: Making Sure ‘It’ Doesn’t Happen Here” in which he referenced a statement by economist Milton Friedman about fighting deflation by dropping money from a helicopter.

Well, it might be time for a new nickname for Bernanke because what he did today was a lot more than drop money from a helicopter.  Today the Federal Reserve announced that QE3 will begin on Friday, but it is going to be much different from QE1 and QE2.  Both of those rounds of quantitative easing were of limited duration.  This time, the quantitative easing is going to be open-ended.  The Fed is going to buy 40 billion dollars worth of mortgage-backed securities per month until they have decided that the economy is in good enough shape to stop.  For those that get confused by terms like “quantitative easing” and “mortgage-backed securities”, what the Federal Reserve is essentially saying is this: “We’re going to print a bunch of money and buy stuff for as long as we feel it is necessary.”  In addition, the Federal Reserve has promised to keep interest rates at ultra-low levels all the way through mid-2015.  The course that the Federal Reserve has set us on is utter insanity.  Ben Bernanke can rain money down on us all he wants, but it is not going to do much at all to help the real economy.  However, it will definitely hasten the destruction of the U.S. dollar.
And the Federal Reserve is apparently very eager to get QE3 going.  Purchases of mortgage-backed securities are going to start on Friday.In the coming months, hundreds of billions of dollars that the Federal Reserve has zapped into existence out of nothing will be injected into our financial system.So what will happen to all of this new money?If banks and financial institutions use that money to make loans then it could have somewhat of a positive impact on the economy in the short-term.However, the truth is that it isn’t as if banks are hurting for cash to loan out.  In fact, right now banks are already sitting on $1.6 trillion in excess reserves.  Just like with the first two rounds of quantitative easing, a lot of the money from QE3 will likely end up being put on the shelf.But the stock market loved the news because they know that the previous two rounds of quantitative easing have been great for the financial markets.  On Thursday, the stock market soared to levels not seen since December 2007.There is much rejoicing on Wall Street right now.And this stock market bounce is great for Bernanke’s good buddy Barack Obama.Obama nominated Bernanke to a second term as Fed Chairman, and this might be Bernanke’s way of paying him back.But of course the Fed is supposed to be “above politics” so that would never happen, right? The Federal Reserve essentially “crossed the Rubicon” today.  No longer will quantitative easing be considered an “emergency measure”.  Rather, it will now be considered just another “tool” that the Fed uses in the normal course of business.
Considering how vulnerable the U.S. dollar already is, announcing an “open-ended” round of quantitative easing is utter foolishness.  According to the Fed, when you add the 40 billion dollars of new mortgage-backed security purchases per month to all of the other “easing” measures the Fed is continuing to do, the grand total is going to come to about 85 billion dollars a month.  The following is from the statement that the Fed released earlier today….

To support a stronger economic recovery and to help ensure that inflation, over time, is at the rate most consistent with its dual mandate, the Committee agreed today to increase policy accommodation by purchasing additional agency mortgage-backed securities at a pace of $40 billion per month. The Committee also will continue through the end of the year its program to extend the average maturity of its holdings of securities as announced in June, and it is maintaining its existing policy of reinvesting principal payments from its holdings of agency debt and agency mortgage-backed securities in agency mortgage-backed securities. These actions, which together will increase the Committee’s holdings of longer-term securities by about $85 billion each month through the end of the year, should put downward pressure on longer-term interest rates, support mortgage markets, and help to make broader financial conditions more accommodative.The Committee will closely monitor incoming information on economic and financial developments in coming months. If the outlook for the labor market does not improve substantially, the Committee will continue its purchases of agency mortgage-backed securities, undertake additional asset purchases, and employ its other policy tools as appropriate until such improvement is achieved in a context of price stability. In determining the size, pace, and composition of its asset purchases, the Committee will, as always, take appropriate account of the likely efficacy and costs of such purchases.

So what does all of this mean?
I really like how one analyst put it when he described this announcement as a “I’m gonna ease till your eyes bleed kinda statement“.The Fed also promised to keep interest rates at “exceptionally low levels” until mid-2015….To support continued progress toward maximum employment and price stability, the Committee expects that a highly accommodative stance of monetary policy will remain appropriate for a considerable time after the economic recovery strengthens. In particular, the Committee also decided today to keep the target range for the federal funds rate at 0 to 1/4 percent and currently anticipates that exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate are likely to be warranted at least through mid-2015.It seems that whenever the U.S. economy gets into trouble, Bernanke and his friends at the Fed only have one prescription and it goes something like this….“Print more money and promise to keep interest rates near zero even longer.”Of course a lot of Republicans are quite disturbed that QE3 was announced with just a couple of months remaining in a very heated election battle.Even big news organizations such as CNBC are commenting on this….Though the Fed is ostensibly politically independent, the decision comes at a ticklish time with the presidential election less than two months away.And without a doubt the mainstream media will be proclaiming this to be “good news” for the economy in the short-term.But is QE3 really going to help the average person on the street?
Well, first let’s take a look at employment.  We are told that one of the primary reasons for QE3 is jobs.
But did QE1 and QE2 create jobs? The answer is clearly no.As you can see from the chart below, the percentage of working age Americans with a job fell dramatically during the last recession and has not bounced back since that time despite all of the quantitative easing that has been done already….

So why try the same thing again when it did not work the first two times? But what more quantitative easing is likely to do is to pump up stock market values because a lot of the money from QE3 is going to end up being put into stocks and other investments.This is going to help the wealthy get even wealthier, and it is going to make the “wealth gap” between the rich and the poor even larger in America.QE3 is also probably going to cause commodity prices to rise just like QE1 and QE2 did.That means that you will be paying more for gasoline, food and other basic necessities.So there may not be more jobs, but at least you will get the privilege of paying more for things.The inflation that QE3 will cause will be particularly cruel for those on fixed incomes such as retirees.None of the extra money from QE3 is going to go into their pockets, but they will have to pay more to heat their homes and fill up their shopping carts.And the “exceptionally low interest rate” policy of the Federal Reserve is absolutely devastating for those that have saved for retirement and that are relying on interest income for their living expenses.In short, quantitative easing is very good for the wealthy and it is very bad for the average man and woman on the street.But what else would you expect from the Federal Reserve? It is imperative that we educate the American people about the Federal Reserve and about how they are destroying our economy.  For much more on this, please see my previous article entitled “10 Things That Every American Should Know About The Federal Reserve“.Perhaps the biggest danger from QE3 is that it could greatly hasten the day when the U.S. dollar ceases to be the reserve currency of the world.The rest of the world is not stupid.  They see that the Federal Reserve is now firing up the printing presses whenever they feel like it.  They can see the games that we are playing with our currency.
Why should the rest of the world continue to use the U.S. dollar to trade with one another when the United States is constantly debasing it and playing games with its value? As I wrote about the other day, China and Russia have been calling for a new reserve currency for the world for several years.  They have been leading the charge to conduct international trade in currencies other than the U.S. dollar, and I have documented many of the major international agreements to move away from the U.S. dollar that have been made in the last couple of years.The status of the U.S. dollar in the world has already been steadily slipping, and now Helicopter Ben Bernanke pulls this kind of nonsense.We are handing the rest of the world an excuse to abandon the U.S. dollar on a silver platter.And when the rest of the globe rejects the U.S. dollar as a reserve currency, the dollar will crash, the cost of living will increase dramatically, our standard of living will go way down and we will never fully recover from it.So if you think that things are “bad” now, just wait until that happens.The U.S. dollar is one of the best things that the U.S. economy still has going for it, and Helicopter Ben Bernanke is doing his best to absolutely destroy that.http://www.infowars.com/
