German chancellor Angela Merkel has suggested Europe needs a constitution that makes reference to Christianity and God following her audience with Pope Benedict XVI on Monday (29 August).The German leader, the daughter of a protestant pastor, visited the Pope at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, to discuss several issues in European and international politics, ahead of the Pope's September visit to Germany, his homeland.We spoke about freedom of religion, Ms Merkel told journalists following the 45-minute meeting.She added I underlined my opinion that we need a European identity in the form of a constitutional treaty and I think it should be connected to Christianity and God, as Christianity has forged Europe in a decisive way,according to press reports.
The Christian Democrat leader has previously spoken out in favour of reopening the debate on religion in the constitution as the EU considers how to tackle the deadlock after the treaty's rejection by French and Dutch voters last year.Germany has been assigned by EU member states to come up with some kind of solution to the constitutional crisis during its presidency of the union in the first six months of 2007. JAKARTA (Reuters) An undersea earthquake struck near Indonesia's Moluccas islands on Tuesday, but officials said its strength was moderate and there was no risk of a tsunami. There were no reports of any casualties or damage.
The tsunami warning has been canceled. The epicenter of the quake was 33 km (21 miles) in the sea with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale,Subagio, an official at the state meteorological agency, said.Earlier, the agency had pegged the magnitude at 6.4.The quake was centered southwest of Tual island under the Banda Sea, due east of East Timor and north of Darwin in northern Australia, the agency said.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Tropical storm John turned into a hurricane off Mexico's Pacific Coast on Tuesday, threatening to trigger dangerous flash floods and mudslides as it neared Acapulco and other tourist resorts. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said John was packing maximum sustained winds of almost 80 mph (130 kph) with higher gusts.Storm warnings were posted for a long stretch of coastline from Acapulco to the steel-making port of Lazaro Cardenas, as John became the sixth hurricane of the east Pacific season.Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches and isolated deluges of 8 inches were possible along the coast.These amounts could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides over areas of mountainous terrain, the hurricane center said.
John, a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale which goes up to a top notch of five, is located about 190 miles southeast of Acapulco and is slowly moving northwest parallel to the coast.John is expected to pound Acapulco with wind and rain from Tuesday and then batter other coastal resorts like Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos in the Baja California peninsula in coming days.The nearby port of Salina Cruz, which exports crude oil to Asia, was open but on alert, with the port authority reporting wind and choppy seas.State oil monopoly Pemex also has a refinery at Salina Cruz, southeast of Acapulco, with refining capacity of 330,000 barrels per day. KEY WEST, Fla. - Rain from Tropical Storm Ernesto swept across parts of the vulnerable Florida Keys on Tuesday morning as residents hurried to fill gas tanks, gather emergency supplies and board up windows before the main body of the storm strikes.
The storm has a chance of regaining hurricane strength before it makes landfall as early as Tuesday night, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said.On the anniversary of Katrina's devastation of New Orleans, and with memories still fresh of the seven hurricanes that have hit Florida since 2004, state officials urged residents not to wait for Ernesto to strengthen again.
Tourists were ordered out of the Keys. Mainland Broward and Miami-Dade counties urged residents of mobile homes and homes still damaged from previous storms, including roofs protected only by tarpaulins, to evacuate early Tuesday.

Spain calls for collective effort to achieve Mideast peace
Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos on Monday called for a collective effort to achieve an efficient result in the Middle East peace process. The influence of Europe is perhaps more effective than the simple power shown by the United States for achieving peace between Israel and three other parties in the region -- Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, Moratinos said in a public lecture at Menendez Pelayo International University. Military power has not managed to solve the problems of Lebanon, but perhaps political influence can guarantee Israel's security against the katyusha rockets fired by Lebanon-based guerilla group Hezbollah, he added.
Moratinos urged the European Union to act on its own initiative as the United States could not solve the problem even at the best of times for the U.S. administration. He said it was wrong of people to think that the United States only helped Israel and that Europe only helped the Arab nations. This is not the case, neither in Spain, nor in Europe as a whole, Moratinos said, stressing that Spain had first condemned Hezbollah's abduction of two Israeli soldiers.
Meanwhile, he said the Spanish government's plan to send troops to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon needed approval from parliament. Steed Jeffs, 50, was taken into custody after he and two other people were pulled over late Monday by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 15 just north of Las Vegas, FBI spokesman David Staretz said.The leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was wanted in Utah and Arizona on suspicion of sexual misconduct for allegedly arranging marriages between underage girls and older men.
Since May, Jeffs has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, with a $100,000 reward offered for information leading to his capture.
The other two people in the vehicle were identified as one of Warren Jeffs' wives, Naomi Jeffs, and a brother, Isaac Steve Jeffs, both 32, Staretz said. They were being interviewed by the FBI in Las Vegas but were not arrested.Jeffs was in federal custody in Las Vegas pending a court hearing on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, Staretz said. It was not immediately clear if Jeffs would face extradition to Arizona or Utah.Jeffs was indicted in June on an Arizona charge of arranging a marriage between a 16-year-old girl and a married man, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The Security Council has given Iran until Thursday to suspend enrichment, a process that can produce either fuel for a reactor or material for weapons.The U.S. and Britain are the source of many tensions, Ahmadinejad said at a news conference. At the Security Council, where they have to protect security, they enjoy the veto right. TAIPEI, Taiwan A strong earthquake struck off Taiwan's east coast Monday, the Central Weather Bureau said.
No damage or injuries were immediately reported. The magnitude 6.1 quake was
centered under the Pacific Ocean 80 miles east of Suao in northeastern Taiwan, the weather bureau said.Suao is a coastal city about 75 miles southeast of the capital of Taipei. The quake, which struck before dawn, was felt across the island but did not appear to cause major damage because of its distance, the bureau said.Quakes frequently rattle the island, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

HAVANA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Ernesto drenched eastern Cuba on Monday and headed for the Florida Straits, where it could regain hurricane strength and hit Florida's most populous region. Ernesto, which briefly became the Atlantic season's first hurricane on Sunday, killed two people in impoverished Haiti.It then faded to a mass of showers and thunderstorms with 40 mph (64 kph) winds as it moved over Cuba, dumping up to seven inches of rain and filling reservoirs to the brim, but packing few gusts.
Forecasters said it would likely gather force from the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and be just below hurricane strength by the time it neared the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area, home to about 5 million people.The intensity forecast is for Ernesto to be very near hurricane strength at landfall,on Tuesday or early Wednesday, said Florida meteorologist Ben Nelson.
Battered by eight hurricanes in two years, Florida prepared for a pounding one year after Hurricane Katrina smacked the state on its way to the U.S. Gulf coast, where it swamped New Orleans, killed 1,500 people and caused $80 billion in damage.Hour-long lines formed at gas stations and people shopped for plywood, batteries and water across a region where Hurricane Wilma knocked out power to millions and caused $12 billion in damage just 10 months ago.

CUBANS RETURN HOME
Ernesto is but a shadow of its former self,Cuban weather forecaster Jose Rubiera said shortly before Cuba lifted a hurricane warning in the provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago and Granma.
Evacuees from those areas were being returned home.Cuba had evacuated more than 600,000 people, many in buses and trucks. Cattle and crops were protected and domestic flights to eastern Cuba suspended.Ernesto's center was close to the north coast of Cuba and 60 miles east of the city of Camaguey at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT), moving northwest at 13 mph (20 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.The storm's center should emerge into the Florida Straits on Monday night, the Miami-based center said.National Hurricane Center director Max Mayfield warned Floridians not to take the storm lightly even if it doesn't reach hurricane force again.It's a little academic whether you have 70 mph (113 kph), that's what we're forecasting, when you have a tropical storm, or 75 mph (120 kph) and you have a hurricane,he said. And let's not forget Katrina last year.
Katrina caused $572 million in insured damage when it crossed Florida as a Category 1 storm, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Ernesto provided a sharp reminder to residents of vulnerable U.S. coastal areas that the peak of the hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, was upon them. Florida's government declared a state of emergency and television stations cranked up coverage with reminders to fill bathtubs with water and to put up hurricane shutters. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush reassured residents there would be no fuel shortages and urged them not to overreact by rushing to the pumps. Tourists were ordered out of the Florida Keys and schools and courts were closed in the low-lying, 110-mile (177-km) island chain off Florida's southern tip.
Ernesto was downgraded to a tropical storm after pounding Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas. It killed at least two people, one of them near Gonaives, a port city where tropical storm flooding killed 3,000 people two years ago. Oil prices fell over $2 on Monday after Ernesto seemed less likely to threaten oil facilities in the Gulf of Mexico, where a quarter of U.S. oil and gas is pumped. At least 150 dead after flash floods in Indian desert state Mon Aug 28, 1:32 AM ET
BARMER, India (AFP) - At least 150 bodies have been recovered since last week following flash floods caused by heavy monsoon rains in India's desert state of Rajasthan, officials said Monday. In 11 districts of Rajasthan 150 bodies have been recovered so far, state public works minister Rajendra Singh Rathore told AFP.The toll has risen sharply since Sunday as rescue workers continue to find more bodies as flood waters fell in the normally drought-prone area, where about 100 people were still missing.The majority of the flood-related deaths occurred in Barmer district, with local police chief N.R.K. Reddy saying the toll was expected to rise.
The district, which experienced unusually heavy rains in the last 10 days, is near the border with Pakistan, or about 887 kilometres (549 miles) west of the Indian capital New Delhi.In more than a dozen villages pools of water reached depths of 18 metres (30 feet), leading state officials to ask the central government to send a task force to examine how to help drain the water.As many as 47,000 animal carcasses have been found raising fears of water-borne disease in the region, Rathore said.Earlier this month, hundreds were killed and more than 10 million people in four states were affected by floods caused by monsoon rains that sweep India from June to September and are crucial for the farm-dependent economy.Western Gujarat state faced the brunt with its diamond-polishing hub of Surat remaining under water for five days.

FORT WORTH — The skies opened up Sunday on the Metroplex, dropping rain throughout Tarrant County and putting an end to 19 consecutive 100-degree days and could be the first signs of fall, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.
If you call Aledo right now, they’ll tell you that they are getting drowned, meteorologist Vick Corbelli shortly after 3 p.m. Fort Worth might get it in the next hour or so.The storm system, which has dumped a half-inch to an inch of rain, has been moving slowly from the northwest bringing the first drops of rain to the area since August 7th, the last day the high temperature was below 100 degrees, Corbelli said.
With the dark clouds hovering above, the Metroplex has cooled down to the lower 90s at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. Today’s high topped out at 96, Corbelli said.This is the cool wave that is definitely going to break the back of this heat wave,said meteorologist Jesse Moore.There is still hot weather to come, but we’ve gotten through the worst of it now.The cooler weather might be here to stay, Corbelli said, as a northwest flow should bring lower temperatures to the Metroplex every seven to ten days.
It looks like fall might be coming out, he said.The rain is predicted to continue through the evening. There is a 60 percent chance of rain Monday with a high in the low 90s.

Paris- French President Jacques Chirac on Monday called for a rapid meeting of the so-called Mideast quartet to relaunch the peace process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. To resign oneself to the status quo is to risk a spiral of violence that will go out of control, Chirac warned French ambassadors meeting in Paris. The French president said that just as Israel had a right to live in peace and security, the Palestinians had the right of their own state with stable and secure borders. The realization of the legitimate rights of the Palestinians would justify neither the intolerable denial of Israel's right to exist nor the recourse to terrorism, Chirac said.
Noting that a relaunch of the peace process was vital, Chirac said: In this perspective I call for a rapid meeting of the quartet, which consists of the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia. After meeting with Chirac last week in Paris, German Chancellor Angela Merkel also called for a meeting of the Mideast quartet to revive the flagging peace process.

TAIPEI, Taiwan A strong earthquake struck off Taiwan's east coast Monday, the Central Weather Bureau said.
No damage or injuries were immediately reported. The magnitude 6.1 quake was
centered under the Pacific Ocean 80 miles east of Suao in northeastern Taiwan, the weather bureau said.Suao is a coastal city about 75 miles southeast of the capital of Taipei. The quake, which struck before dawn, was felt across the island but did not appear to cause major damage because of its distance, the bureau said.Quakes frequently rattle the island, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

The Italian Defense Ministry said a naval task force was already being assembled to move about 1,900 soldiers to Lebanon.

The group’s spokeswoman reportedly called on Mason to have a sense of humor about the pamphlet.I found it disgusting and obnoxious, Mason said, referring to the pamphlet. And I find it even more disgusting and obnoxious that the spokesman for that organization says, Why doesn't he have a sense of humor about it?
Mason’s lawsuit against the group seeks to see the pamphlets destroyed, and the payment of $2 million in damages and $2 million in compensation due to the damage the defamation has caused him. Jackie Mason Sues Jews For Jesus For Using His Likeness

Famed Jewish comedian and ordained rabbi Jackie Mason is suing a Christian missionary group for using his likeness and implying he has embraced the Christian deity. The Christian evangelical group, Jews for Jesus, which aims to convince Jews that the Christian faith does not conflict with Judaism, distributed a pamphlet featuring Mason’s likeness and the words, Jackie Mason…A Jew For Jesus!?
On the other side, it says: Jackie’s shtick is that there’s a difference between Jews and Gentiles, and explains why there is, in fact, no difference and Jews can embrace the Christian deity.The pamphlet is part of J4J’s recent media blitz, targeting New York area Jews in direct mailing and handing out literature on subways and street-corners. The group’s spokeswoman reportedly called on Mason to have a sense of humor about the pamphlet.I found it disgusting and obnoxious, Mason said, referring to the pamphlet. And I find it even more disgusting and obnoxious that the spokesman for that organization says, Why doesn't he have a sense of humor about it?
Mason’s lawsuit against the group seeks to see the pamphlets destroyed, and the payment of $2 million in damages and $2 million in compensation due to the damage the defamation has caused him. The pamphlet uses my name, my likeness, my `shtick' (if you will), and my very act, which is derived from my personality, to attract attention and converts,' Mason said in the suit he filed in the New York State Supreme Court. The suit alleges that the group used the comedian’s likeness to advertise a product in violation of the New York State civil rights law.First of all there's no such thing as a Jew for Jesus. If you believe in Jesus you're a Christian.
That's the point of Christianity, Mason said. You can't be a table and also a chair.Although according to Jewish law, a Jew remains a Jew regardless of his embrace of foreign faiths, the Jews for Jesus organization is largely funded and staffed by Christian-born missionaries.

Miami - Ernesto grew into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season on Sunday and threatened deforested Haiti with floods and mudslides as it headed for the Gulf of Mexico a year after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.Forecasters said Ernesto could become a Category 3 hurricane with 185km/h winds in the Gulf, home to a quarter of US oil and gas production, and its most likely path would take it ashore on Florida's west coast near Tampa on Thursday.But first, the growing hurricane took aim at Haiti, where past tropical storms and hurricanes have killed thousands of people, and Cuba.The US National Hurricane Centre said Ernesto's top sustained winds rose early on Sunday to 120km/h, up from 95km/h just a few hours earlier.
The storm was about 185km south-west of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, at 12h00 GMT on Sunday and was a Category 1 storm on the five-stage Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity.A hurricane warning was issued for the southern coast of Haiti meaning hurricane conditions were expected within 24 hours. Forecasters said up to 30cm of rain with up to 50cm in isolated areas could fall on the island of Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic.Tropical Storm Jeanne killed about 3 000 people in Haiti two years ago when its rains triggered floods and mudslides in and around the city of Gonaives.The Miami-based hurricane centre said Ernesto could become a Category 2 hurricane before it reaches the coast of Cuba on Monday. A Category 2 storm has top sustained winds from 155-177km/h and can cause moderate damage.

BARMER, India (AFP) - At least 93 people were killed and dozens more are missing in massive floods caused by monsoon rains that have swamped the normally drought-prone desert state of Rajasthan, reports said.
Eight more bodies were recovered Sunday in the state's Barmer district, where the majority of the flood-related deaths have occurred, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.The district is near the border with Pakistan, or about 887 kilometres (549 miles) west of the Indian capital New Delhi.
State officials, citing the numbers of people still missing, said Sunday that the death toll could reach as high as 300, the report said.Government officials had announced Saturday that 51 bodies had been recovered from Barmer, where vast swathes of land remained under water according to aerial footage shown on Indian television.Since the floods began, 51 dead bodies have been found in Barmer. The search is on for 50 (more) people,said Rajendra Singh Rathore, the state's public works minister, according to PTI.
Navy divers and army troops had been called in to rescue around 200 people who had taken shelter atop houses, vehicles and sand dunes after the unusually heavy rains in the desert region, Rathore added.The army had flown nearly 3,500 people by helicopter to higher ground.Rathore said around 47,000 animals had also been found dead.In Barmer's Kawas village, the rains initially brought cheer last week, providing relief from a drought that had lasted for six years. But residents said bloated bodies of people and animals were now floating in the water.Earlier this month, more than 10 million people were affected by floods in four states.

Firefighters continue to battle Turkey forest fires

Ankara - Firefighters continued to battle a number of blazes Tuesday in the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea regions with investigators looking into claims that one fire in the Kas region may have been deliberately lit, the Anadolu news agency reported.
By Tuesday afternoon firefighters had brought under control fires in Kusadasi and Adana but were still battling the forest blazes in the Kas and Bodrum regions on the Mediterranean coast. Anadolu quoted a police official saying that the blaze in Kas appeared to have started almost simultaneously at four separate points, leading officials to suspect that it may have been a deliberate act of sabotage by the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) which has in the past been responsible for lighting forest fires.
Using water-dumping helicopters and planes, firefighters were having difficulty bringing the Kas blaze under control due to high winds and rugged terrain. Some 300 hectares of forest had been destroyed in the fire. Another fire in the Bodrum region had destroyed 700 hectares of forest. The blaze had not been brought under control by Tuesday afternoon. In Kusadasi, fire-fighters were mopping up on Tuesday after bringing under control on Monday a blaze that destroyed some 700 hectares of forest. The fire missed by just a few metres from destroying a house in the area of Selcuk where Mary, mother of Jesus, purportedly spent her final years. TEHRAN, Iran (Reuters) -- Iran test fired a long-range, radar-evading missile on Sunday from a submarine in the Gulf as part of war games that began earlier this month, state television reported.The missile was called Sagheb, which means Piercing, but the report did not give the missile's range.Minutes ago it was launched from a submarine in the Persian Gulf and it hit the target, television
reported.Western nations have been watching developments in Iran's missile capabilities with concern amid a standoff over the country's nuclear program, which the West says is aimed at building atomic bombs. Iran says the program is only civilian.
Iran's military also held war games in the Gulf in April. Those exercises were interpreted by analysts as a thinly veiled threat that Iran could disrupt vital oil shipping lanes if pushed by an escalation in the nuclear dispute.A navy admiral, named only as Kouchaki, told state television the missile had been designed and produced in Iran.It can be installed and launched by Iran's navy. It is a long-range missile, with a very high speed and destructive power. It is also radar evading,he said.The Islamic Republic has three aging Kilo class diesel-electric Russian submarines and also builds midget submarines. The Sagheb is listed as an air defense

Miami - Ernesto grew into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season on Sunday and threatened deforested Haiti with floods and mudslides as it headed for the Gulf of Mexico a year after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.Forecasters said Ernesto could become a Category 3 hurricane with 185km/h winds in the Gulf, home to a quarter of US oil and gas production, and its most likely path would take it ashore on Florida's west coast near Tampa on Thursday.But first, the growing hurricane took aim at Haiti, where past tropical storms and hurricanes have killed thousands of people, and Cuba.The US National Hurricane Centre said Ernesto's top sustained winds rose early on Sunday to 120km/h, up from 95km/h just a few hours earlier.

BARMER, India (AFP) - At least 93 people were killed and dozens more are missing in massive floods caused by monsoon rains that have swamped the normally drought-prone desert state of Rajasthan, reports said.
Eight more bodies were recovered Sunday in the state's Barmer district, where the majority of the flood-related deaths have occurred, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.The district is near the border with Pakistan, or about 887 kilometres (549 miles) west of the Indian capital New Delhi.
State officials, citing the numbers of people still missing, said Sunday that the death toll could reach as high as 300, the report said.Government officials had announced Saturday that 51 bodies had been recovered from Barmer, where vast swathes of land remained under water according to aerial footage shown on Indian television.Since the floods began, 51 dead bodies have been found in Barmer. The search is on for 50 (more) people,said Rajendra Singh Rathore, the state's public works minister, according to PTI.
Navy divers and army troops had been called in to rescue around 200 people who had taken shelter atop houses, vehicles and sand dunes after the unusually heavy rains in the desert region, Rathore added.The army had flown nearly 3,500 people by helicopter to higher ground.Rathore said around 47,000 animals had also been found dead.In Barmer's Kawas village, the rains initially brought cheer last week, providing relief from a drought that had lasted for six years. But residents said bloated bodies of people and animals were now floating in the water.Earlier this month, more than 10 million people were affected by floods in four states.

Firefighters continue to battle Turkey forest fires

Ankara - Firefighters continued to battle a number of blazes Tuesday in the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea regions with investigators looking into claims that one fire in the Kas region may have been deliberately lit, the Anadolu news agency reported.
By Tuesday afternoon firefighters had brought under control fires in Kusadasi and Adana but were still battling the forest blazes in the Kas and Bodrum regions on the Mediterranean coast. Anadolu quoted a police official saying that the blaze in Kas appeared to have started almost simultaneously at four separate points, leading officials to suspect that it may have been a deliberate act of sabotage by the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) which has in the past been responsible for lighting forest fires.
Using water-dumping helicopters and planes, firefighters were having difficulty bringing the Kas blaze under control due to high winds and rugged terrain. Some 300 hectares of forest had been destroyed in the fire. Another fire in the Bodrum region had destroyed 700 hectares of forest. The blaze had not been brought under control by Tuesday afternoon. In Kusadasi, fire-fighters were mopping up on Tuesday after bringing under control on Monday a blaze that destroyed some 700 hectares of forest. The fire missed by just a few metres from destroying a house in the area of Selcuk where Mary, mother of Jesus, purportedly spent her final years. Dear World,
It Appears That You Are Hard To Please.
I understand that you are upset over us, here in Israel. Indeed, it appears that you are quite upset, even angry and outraged? Indeed, every few years you seem to become upset over us. Today, it is the brutal repression of the Palestinians; yesterday, it was Lebanon; before that it was the bombing of the nuclear reactor in Baghdad and the Yom Kippur War campaign. It appears that Jews who triumph and who, therefore, live, upset you most extraordinarily. Of course, dear world, long before there was an Israel, we, the Jewish people - upset you. We upset a German people who elected a Hitler and we upset an Austrian people who cheered his entry into Vienna and we upset a whole slew of Slavic nations - Poles, Slovaks, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Russians, Hungarians, Romanians. And we go back a long, long way in the history of world upset.
We upset the Cossacks of Chmielnicki who massacred tens of thousands of us in 1648-49; we upset the Crusaders who, on their way to liberate the Holy Land, were so upset at Jews that they slaughtered untold numbers of us. We upset, for centuries, a Roman Catholic Church that did its best to define our relationship through Inquisitions. And we upset the arch-enemy of the Church, Martin Luther, who, in his call to burn the synagogues and the Jews within them, showed an admirable Christian ecumenical spirit.
It is because we became so upset over upsetting you, dear world, that we decided to leave you - in a manner of speaking - and establish a Jewish State. The reasoning was that living in close contact with you, as resident-strangers in the various countries that comprise you, we upset you, irritate you, disturb you. What better notion, then, than to leave you and thus love you - and have you love us? Nevertheless, the same oppressed and repressed Palestinians slaughtered hundreds of Jews in Jerusalem, Jaffa, Safed and Hebron. Indeed, 67 Jews were slaughtered one day in Hebron - in 1929. Dear world, why did the Arabs - the Palestinians - massacre 67 Jews in one day in 1929? Could it have been their anger over Israeli aggression in 1967? And why were 510 Jewish men, women and children slaughtered in Arab riots in 1936-39? Was it because of Arab upset over 1967? And when you, World, proposed a U.N. Partition Plan in 1947 that would have created a Palestinian State alongside a tiny Israel and the Arabs cried and went to war and killed 6,000 Jews - was that upset stomach caused by the aggression of 1967? And, by the way, dear world, why did we not hear your cry of upset, then?
The poor Palestinians who today kill Jews with explosives and firebombs and stones are part of the same people who - when they had all the territories they now demand be given them for their state - attempted to drive the Jewish State into the sea. The same twisted faces, the same hate, the same cry of idbah-al-yahud Slaughter the Jews! that we hear and see today, were seen and heard then. The same people, the same dream - destroy Israel. What they failed to do yesterday, they dream of today - but we should not repress them.Dear world, you stood by the Holocaust and you stood by in 1948 as seven states launched a war that the Arab League proudly compared to the Mongol massacres. You stood by in 1967 as Nasser, wildly cheered by wild mobs in every Arab capital in the world, vowed to drive the Jews into the sea. And you would stand by tomorrow if Israel were facing extinction.

F-Zero Tornado touches down on Long Island

(New York-WABC, August 26, 2006) - The National Weather Service confirms a weak F-zero tornado touchdown in East Massapequa on Friday. The weather service says an F-zero tornado has winds between 40 to 70 mph. Meanwhile, wild weather that rolled through the Tri-State caused flooding in parts of our area, even prompting a tornado warning at one point. In Massapequa, Long Island, trees were uprooted in an entire section all in a matter of seconds. The National Weather Service sent two investigators to find out whether it was in fact a tornado -- and in fact, it was.
In Morris Heights in the Bronx, streets were filled with water. And in East Meadow, Long Island, the water was knee deep. Drivers were trapped in the rising water. In the rest of our Accu-Weather forecast: Saturday, we'll have a mix of sun and clouds with shower likely in the afternoon. Temperatures will be in the mid 70s. Sunday we're looking at the chance of thunderstorms, and highs again just below the 80 degree mark. Really do watch out for thunderstorms, and be prepared to get indoors to safety if one hits suddenly where you are. Monday and Tuesday, more threats of thunderstorms and warmer with highs back in the mid-80s.

1,000 police dispatched to fight forest fires in Jambi
Jambi (ANTARA News) - Jambi Police headquarters has dispatched about 1,000 of its personnel to help people in the province fight forest fires that have spread smoke in the region.The spokesman of the Jambi Police, Adj.Sr.Comr. Yatim Suyatmo, said here Saturday the Jambi Police chief detected hundreds of hot spots when he monitored the fires from the air two days before.The Jambi Police headquarters has dispatched some 1,000 policemen to extinguish the hot spots in cooperation with the Forestry Service of the province.The hot spots that have sparked forest fires are mostly located in Kumpeh sub-district, Muaro Jambi regency. The land surface of the forest in that sub-district is covered by peat soil, which catches fire during the dry season.
The Jambi Police will take strict measures against those responsible for the forest fires and will bring the culprits to court for trial as their negligence has harmed people and spoiled the environment in the province, Suyatmo said. Two suspects in fire cases in Tanjung Jabung Barat, Jambi, have been detained and the police expect the detention of more fire suspects, according to the spokesman.(*)

MENTION WTO, Afta, Nafta, Efta and Safta and what comes next is logically the concept and practice of free trade. The "A" in the FTAs stands for either area, agreement or association, which makes the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) stand on a similar footing as the North American Free Trade Association (Nafta).While the FTAs are regional in scope, the World Trade Organisation (WTO), on the other hand, as its name implies, is global in its reach, mirroring the United Nations without the unassailable benefits of the major winners of World War 2.
In articulating a free trade area, being the lowest form of economic integration, often more extensive ideas have been put forward about what and when certain objectives are to be achieved. These ideas are usually intrinsic in a common market and political union.Four years ago, in the second last year of his premiership, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad promoted the idea of an Asian Union in a speech in Japan. Two years later, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was quoted by Fortune magazine as urging Asean to form a common market to see its completion by 2020.When these two ideas are pieced together, what inevitably comes to mind are the European Economic Community (EEC), followed by the European Community (EC) and then the European Union (EU). The EEC was formed in 1957, the EC in 1973 and the EU in 1992 over a duration of 35 years of development along the experience of collectively embracing the free trade area, the customs union, the common market, the economic/monetary union and the political union.While the Asian Union is ambitious and awesome, given time it is probably achievable, although it may take more than 35 years.
This is because for such a union to become reality, it requires initially, if the EU model and not that of the African Union were to be adopted, that all potential members record economic performance on a sustained basis, common to all, over a number of years at pre-determined levels.The next phase would emphasise the mandatory freedoms on the movement of goods, workers, establishments, payments and capital, being the vital components of a common market in line with what the Singapore Prime Minister might have meant.To move forward from AFTA to a common market and on to an Asian Union, the right attitude will be to appreciate what the European Court of Justice held of the EC/EU: It is a new legal order that becomes an integral part of a member country’s legal system. Benefiting from membership for an unlimited duration, a member country transfers certain powers and sovereign rights to the community or union.
Whether or not such transfer of powers and sovereign rights is possible in a common market or an Asian Union will surely be a serious matter of deep contemplation, given the robust difference of stands and opinions among countries in this part of the world.
A free trade area, however, is the starting point. Its idea and issues will be discussed henceforth.

countries' troops are decided.Despite early hesitations to make a big contribution to the enlarged force, French President Jacques Chirac agreed to send the extra two battalions after winning a robust mandate for UNIFIL as well as guarantees the force would be able to cope if hostilities flare up again.The announcement of the French reinforcements spurred some other EU countries into firming up previously vague promises to contribute.Madrid, which has yet to confirm its contribution, would provide 950 soldiers and 30 to 40 tanks, Spanish radio channel Cadena Ser said Saturday, although when they would leave was not given.Poland, which already has 214 troops in the existing UNIFIL force, is to lift that to 500 soldiers. Dear World,
It Appears That You Are Hard To Please.
I understand that you are upset over us, here in Israel. Indeed, it appears that you are quite upset, even angry and outraged? Indeed, every few years you seem to become upset over us. Today, it is the brutal repression of the Palestinians; yesterday, it was Lebanon; before that it was the bombing of the nuclear reactor in Baghdad and the Yom Kippur War campaign. It appears that Jews who triumph and who, therefore, live, upset you most extraordinarily. Of course, dear world, long before there was an Israel, we, the Jewish people - upset you. We upset a German people who elected a Hitler and we upset an Austrian people who cheered his entry into Vienna and we upset a whole slew of Slavic nations - Poles, Slovaks, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Russians, Hungarians, Romanians. And we go back a long, long way in the history of world upset.
We upset the Cossacks of Chmielnicki who massacred tens of thousands of us in 1648-49; we upset the Crusaders who, on their way to liberate the Holy Land, were so upset at Jews that they slaughtered untold numbers of us. We upset, for centuries, a Roman Catholic Church that did its best to define our relationship through Inquisitions. And we upset the arch-enemy of the Church, Martin Luther, who, in his call to burn the synagogues and the Jews within them, showed an admirable Christian ecumenical spirit.
It is because we became so upset over upsetting you, dear world, that we decided to leave you - in a manner of speaking - and establish a Jewish State. The reasoning was that living in close contact with you, as resident-strangers in the various countries that comprise you, we upset you, irritate you, disturb you. What better notion, then, than to leave you and thus love you - and have you love us? ROME (AFP) - Only a day after Europe pledged to provide nearly 7,000 soldiers, the United Nations enlarged peacekeeping force started taking form, as contributors prepared to send troops from early next week. Italy, which will provide the biggest contribution with between 2,000 and 3,000 troops, is counting on other nations to follow its lead when it starts dispatching its contingent on Tuesday.Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and UN chief Kofi Annan stressed in a telephone conversation Saturday the importance of rapidly getting under way with the engagements that have been taken, a statement from the Italian government said Saturday.European nations pledged on Friday in Brussels to provide up to 7,000 troops to reinforce the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which is mandated to expand from about 2,000 currently to 15,000 in order to police a fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah militants.
In line with Annan's wish to see the the first phase of deployment in several days or a week, Prodi said late Friday that the Italian contingent could be able to leave as soon as Tuesday once his cabinet formally approves the mission on Monday.Italian
newspapers said that Rome could send five ships -- including an aircraft carrier -- to Lebanon with 700 to 1,000 troops on board as part of its promised contingent.The warship San Marco, the aircraft carrier Garibaldi, the troop carriers San Giusto and San Giorgio and a patrol boat will leave from their respective Italian ports.In total, 2,500 troops will be on board the Italian ships although less than one thousand would join UNIFIL.The troops called up for the mission will be from the San Marco naval regiment and the elite Serenissima regiment, both battle-hardened from service in Iraq.They are to be accompanied by an amphibious force and special-forces troops as well as a reconnaissance unit with Centauro tanks equipped with 105mm guns.In addition to being the biggest contributor, Italy is to take over command of the UN force next February after France finishes its existing mandate to lead the mission.French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie told Saturday's edition of the The Wall Street Journal that the 2,000 troops France has pledged would arrive within 20 days.
A vanguard of 170 French reinforcements arrived in Lebanon on Friday, making France the only country so far to have actually sent troops for the enlarged force. A dozen French army units are on alert to head to Lebanon once the specific missions of each
countries' troops are decided.Despite early hesitations to make a big contribution to the enlarged force, French President Jacques Chirac agreed to send the extra two battalions after winning a robust mandate for UNIFIL as well as guarantees the force would be able to cope if hostilities flare up again.The announcement of the French reinforcements spurred some other EU countries into firming up previously vague promises to contribute.Madrid, which has yet to confirm its contribution, would provide 950 soldiers and 30 to 40 tanks, Spanish radio channel Cadena Ser said Saturday, although when they would leave was not given.Poland, which already has 214 troops in the existing UNIFIL force, is to lift that to 500 soldiers. The newcomers are likely to be responsible for logistics, like the Polish soldiers already in Lebanon, a Polish foreign ministry spokesman said.
Belgium has said that it will send 300 troops within two months and possibly another 100 later, and Finland is offering 250 although no dates were given for when they would leave.Greece is offering a frigate, helicopter and special forces while other countries, notably Portugal and Latvia, have indicated they could send soldiers. Annan said Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia had offered to participate in UNIFIL though Israel has opposed contributions from those Muslim countries because of an absence of diplomatic relations.
