The new head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on Sunday said Tehran plans to announce a “prohibited zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz aimed at vessels it believes are attempting to transit the waterway, amid the United States’ attempts to squeeze Iran economically to bring it to the negotiating table.Mohsen Rezaei’s comments to Iran’s state broadcaster came with few details, a day after the US struck three Iranian oil tankers in response to Tehran launching ballistic missiles at US warships. Experts called the launches a dangerous escalation after Iran’s previous attacks at sea targeted commercial shipping.“In the coming days, a prohibited zone will be announced outside the Strait of Hormuz. This zone will start from the US Navy’s blockade line and include areas of the Persian Gulf. Any ship entering this new zone will be placed on the sanctions list” of Iran, Rezaei told state TV.It is not clear where Iran defines the location of the weekslong US blockade, which is aimed at Iranian ports and keeping Tehran from shipping out its oil. The US military has said over 20 warships are supporting the blockade, which as of Sunday had redirected 92 commercial ships and disabled three.The US has been introducing new measures to increase the economic pain on Iran after negotiations collapsed and no end to the intermittent fighting appears in sight. Israeli researchers have developed a simple, fast, $60 blood test for diagnosing lung cancer that eliminates the need for costly DNA sequencing.In peer-reviewed research of 103 participants, the test accurately identified 93 percent of stage 2-4 lung cancers while ruling out cancer in 90 percent of the healthy control group. Using fluorescent light, the scientists analyzed chemical patterns on DNA fragments circulating in the bloodstream.The research was led by scientists at Tel Aviv University’s School of Chemistry in collaboration with JaxBio Technologies, and physicians at Haifa’s Bnai Zion Medical Center and Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv.“Lung cancer is one of the most fatal cancers and one of the most common cancers,” said Dr. Abed Agbarya, director of the oncology department at Bnei Zion Medical Center, lead author of the study and its main clinical researcher. He told The Times of Israel during a Zoom interview, “Most people arrive in the last stages of the disease. If we can discover the disease in its early stages, we can go to surgery. We can go to a full cure. The five-year survival rate would be much better.”The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Precision Oncology.A more extensive trial is now underway across several hospitals in Israel and Europe, where clinicians are evaluating the researchers’ uniquely designed chip and using it for patient follow-up. This trial phase is expected to conclude by mid-2027.Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, accounting for an estimated 1.8 million deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. About 2,000 Israelis die from the disease each year.Because early-stage lung cancer rarely presents symptoms, the vast majority of patients are diagnosed only after the disease has already spread, drastically reducing their chances of survival.“Many people with undiagnosed lung cancer come to the emergency room during the winter with a bloody cough and shortness of breath,” Agbarya explained. “They have COPD and emphysema symptoms. Up to 60% of patients are diagnosed with lung cancer only when they are in advanced stages.”Agbarya said that while the Israeli health basket offers low-dose CT tests, fewer than 20% of patients undergo this screening.“That figure is worldwide, not only in Israel,” he said. “Patients don’t want to do the test. That’s why we want to catch lung cancer in people early, before they are symptomatic.”Agbarya first connected with Dr. Yuval Ebenstein of Tel Aviv University through the 8400 Health Network, a network of roughly 400 leading researchers, executives, and clinicians working across Israel’s health tech and biotechnology sectors. Agbarya said he was responsible for the clinical arm of the research, while Ebenstein led the chemical and technological development of the blood test.“We combine chemistry and physics to provide solutions,” Ebenstein told The Times of Israel in a Zoom interview. For the research, his team combined chemistry with genomics, the branch of biotechnology that applies molecular techniques and high-speed DNA sequencing to map and analyze complete sets of genes.“We realized that chemical changes in DNA characterize different tumors,” he said. “We invented a chemical reaction that lights up these chemical changes.”“We took a bunch of little DNA molecules out of the bloodstream,” Ebenstein explained. “We labeled them and tracked the light they emitted, which signified the chemical changes caused by the cancer.”The researchers then put light-emitting DNA molecules on a specially developed glass chip.“Each spot gives off a different level of light based on its chemical makeup and the different amounts of chemical change,” he said. “The grid on the glass looks like a tiny QR code.”Dr. Yuval Ebenstein of Tel Aviv University’s School of Chemistry-The next step is the computational part, Ebenstein said, where the scientists connected the pattern of light to a pattern of the disease.“We were then able to accurately detect stage 2-4 lung cancer,” he said. “It’s just a blood test, and it’s very cheap. It doesn’t cost thousands of shekels.”The method also successfully differentiated between the two primary subtypes of lung cancer: adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.“The test is designed to give solutions to low-income countries because it’s very simple and doesn’t need a lot of infrastructure,” Ebenstein said. “We’re hoping that it could be integrated into routine blood tests.”‘Genuinely clever’ solution-Dr. Ari Raphael, Head of Translational Oncology at Rabin Medical Center’s Davidoff Cancer Center, told the Times of Israel that lung cancer is “the world’s deadliest cancer precisely because it is rarely caught early enough.”Raphael was not involved with the research.“What I find genuinely clever about this study is its ability to identify cancer-related DNA changes through a simple blood test, without expensive sequencing,” he said. “It detects stage 2-4 cancer with over 90% sensitivity and specificity, correctly flagging patients and correctly clearing healthy individuals.”Raphael said that “a fast and affordable tool like this, even at these stages, could meaningfully aid both diagnosis and treatment monitoring.”He pointed out, however, that it was tested in just over 100 patients.“The real challenge ahead is proving it works at Stage 1, when curative treatment is most within reach,” Raphael said. “That is the bar every liquid biopsy must clear before earning a place in the clinic.”‘I feel like this is my mission’For both Agbarya and Ebenstein, the research carries deep personal significance.Ebenstein’s interest in the work was sparked by his stepfather’s diagnosis of a preliminary stage of multiple myeloma, a blood cancer.“That’s how I got interested in studying this,” he said. “I realized that the technologies that we’re developing in the lab are the right tools to follow cancers.”Agbarya said he felt compelled to get involved in the research because lung cancer accounts for 29.2 percent of male cancer deaths among Israeli Arabs compared to 18.1 percent among Jewish men, adding that up to 42 percent of adult Arab men identified as heavy smokers.“In the north, in Haifa and Nazareth where I work with these patients, I see that they can’t afford to travel to the center for treatments,” he said. “They need somebody who invests in them and brings them new treatments. I feel like this is my mission. I want to treat my community, and even protect and diagnose them in the early stages of their disease. They need this support.”He added that over the course of their research, he and Ebenstein became close friends.“Yuval [Ebenstein] was one of the first people I called to say that my son got into Tel Aviv University Medical School,” Agbarya said. “Despite the last really horrible few years that we have had, and what we are still going through, we’re working together on projects. We still have this hope.”

Scientists at southern Israel’s Ben-Gurion University have engineered a high-tech sponge made from plant fibers that can both mop up an oil spill and feed the bacteria that feast on oil and break it down, the university said.The usual methods for tackling oil spills are to skim and soak up the black mess or wait for nature’s microscopic cleaners to digest it.But oil-eating bacteria operate slowly in open water because they lack essential nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus.In the past, scientists tried dumping liquid fertilizers into oil-slicked waters to feed the bacteria. While it helped accelerate cleanup, the liquid fertilizer quickly diluted into ocean currents, lost its effectiveness, and sometimes caused unintended environmental consequences, such as triggering massive algae blooms.The new research, led by Prof. Ariel Kushmaro and headed by Dr. Danit Lisa Karsagi Biron in the Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory, combines physical strength with sped-up biology.The scientists created a spongy material made from cellulose fibers enriched with nutrients, then freeze-dried and baked at high heat (pyrolysis) to create a porous aerogel that acts like an ultra-light sponge. It repels water while locking onto petroleum compounds and can absorb roughly 100 times its own mass in crude oil or fuel in just seconds.Once the oil is trapped, the aerogel transforms into a micro-ecosystem. The baked-in nutrients give local oil-degrading bacteria a comfortable platform from which to guzzle their favorite food source. Instead of floating away or washing out, the nutrients remain on the sponge. Bacteria swarm the fibers, form dense colonies, and rapidly break down the trapped pollutants, then devour the sponge itself.“These findings demonstrate the potential of the method we developed as a versatile and sustainable platform for treating oil spills in aquatic and marine environments,” a university statement quoted Kushmaro as saying. “By combining physical adsorption with biodegradation, the technology offers a promising and innovative alternative to conventional approaches, addressing both immediate containment and long-term environmental recovery.”The research team also included Hanna Barak, Barak Halpern, Esti Kramarski-Winter, Lee Sheli, Noa Azri, Prof. Shmuel Hayoun, and the late Prof. Alex Sivan, all from Ben-Gurion University.The research is published last month in Chemical Engineering Journal Advances and the product is currently undergoing patent protection through BGN Technologies, the university’s technology commercialization company.

BERLIN — Ulrich Siegmund, the leading candidate for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, has made a Simson moped the symbol of his election campaign.The small Simson motorcycles are produced by a company originally founded by a Jewish family and now manufactured in East Germany. Today, they have a cult following and for many AfD supporters, Simson represents East German pride, individual freedom, and resistance to an establishment they see as predominantly West German and liberal.Siegmund’s regular campaign events have featured dozens of vintage Simson mopeds and drawn large crowds of supporters. A rising star in his party, the 35-year-old was recently labeled “Germany’s most dangerous man” by Der Spiegel.Should the AfD come out ahead in this Sunday’s election in Saxony-Anhalt, as polls predict, Siegmund could become the first far-right head of a German state government in the postwar era.Among those watching the election with alarm is Dennis Baum, the US-based heir and spokesperson for the Simson family.Baum’s uncles, Arthur and Julius Simson, were the last Jewish managing directors of Simson-Werke before the company was expropriated by the Nazis. The family won back exclusive rights to the Simson brand name as part of a partial restitution agreement they reached following German reunification.In a recent interview with Tagesspiegel, Baum described the AfD as “antisemitic,” saying, “We find any association with the AfD repulsive and an insult to our family name.”The Baum family’s concerns are not unique: Jewish organizations in Germany have warned for years about the danger the AfD poses to the country’s Jewish community, which has about 100,000 formally affiliated members. As early as 2017, around three dozen Jewish organizations published a statement describing the party as unacceptable to Jewish voters.Since then, the AfD has become increasingly radicalized. In 2025, Germany’s domestic intelligence service classified the party as right-wing extremist, allowing for intelligence monitoring — a decision the AfD is currently challenging in court.Despite this, the party has continued to gain support. Last year, it became the largest opposition party and the second-largest party in the German parliament.The AfD has been particularly successful — and radical — in eastern Germany. Days before the Saxony-Anhalt elections, polls show the AfD holding a commanding lead of around 40%, while the governing CDU trails at just over 20% among the state’s over 2 million population.No other party has said it would be willing to form a coalition with the AfD. But if several smaller parties fail to pass the 5% threshold required to enter the state parliament, 40% of the vote could potentially be enough to give the AfD an absolute majority.Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, told The Times of Israel that the election is a “litmus test for the democratic center” and called Siegmund a “declared enemy of our open society.”Schuster urged the other parties to maintain their refusal to cooperate with the AfD.For Saxony-Anhalt’s Jewish community, the stakes are particularly concrete: A state government has authority over funding for the police, school curricula and cultural institutions. The state’s small Jewish community, numbering around 1,100 members, relies heavily on the state for security and financial support.State governments also hold seats in the Bundesrat, Germany’s upper house of parliament, whose approval is required for some federal legislation.Nazi era ‘happened a long time ago’The AfD’s election manifesto in Saxony-Anhalt is among the party’s most radical to date. It demands that children of asylum seekers be taught in “special classes” and refers to homosexuality as a “sexual deviation.”The platform also criticizes German politicians for avoiding “any positive reference to our rich history prior to 1933,” claiming this “national masochism” prevents “stable national identity formation.” The party promises to “heal this identity disorder” through a new cultural policy and usher in a “patriotic turnaround.”Across the manifesto’s 250 pages, there is no explicit reference to the Holocaust, Nazi crimes, or Jewish history.The manifesto’s main author, Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, deputy chairman of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, told The Times of Israel that the Nazi era was “the darkest chapter in German history.” However, he added, “all of that happened a long time ago and no longer affects us in the here and now.”Tillschneider has repeatedly been accused of antisemitic statements. In 2018, he said the Central Council of Jews was “using” Islam to “bring about the abolition of our people,” language critics said echoed conspiracy theories about Jews orchestrating Muslim migration.He denied that the statement was antisemitic, arguing that “Islam in Germany is not only displacing German culture, it is also threatening Jewish life,” and suggested that the Central Council should “extend a hand to the AfD.”Siegmund himself rarely draws attention for overtly extremist statements and is often described as the “friendly face” of the AfD. But media investigations have found that four former members of a banned neo-Nazi organization are among his close political associates.Confronted with the findings, Siegmund defended the four to Die Welt as “outstanding people.”He did not respond to a request for comment from The Times of Israel. In November 2025, however, he described allegations of antisemitism against his party as “completely absurd,” saying the AfD approaches Jews “with respect and appreciation.”Among the relatively few Jews who publicly support Siegmund and the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt is Artur Abramovych, chairman of Jews in the AfD, which says it has about 25 members.Abramovych believes Jews would benefit from an AfD government because it would end what he called “state funding of left-wing extremist nonsense,” pointing to anti-Israel actions by left-wing students. Die Linke and the populist BSW have taken strongly critical positions toward Israel and have also faced accusations of antisemitism.Together with the AfD, the three parties currently account for up to 60% of the vote in some polls.“The Jewish communities have little influence on the upcoming political situation, which is why pragmatism above all is required,” Privorozki said.The Jewish community has taken some steps to protect itself against political uncertainty. A teen from the northern Bedouin town of Shibli was set to be charged on Monday with membership in a terrorist organization, after he allegedly pledged allegiance to Islamic State.Yaqoub Shibli, 19, was arrested on August 16, and his interrogators learned he “expressed identification with the Islamic State terrorist organization, including watching content about the terrorist organization and pledging allegiance to it,” police and the Shin Bet said Monday in a joint statement.The Northern District Attorney’s Office is slated to indict Shibli on Monday at the Nazareth-Nof Hagalil Magistrate’s Court, the statement said.It added that this is the fourth time in recent weeks that a resident of northern Israel faces an indictment for allegedly joining Islamic State.“The Shin Bet and Israel Police act resolutely against any activity that endangers the security of the state and its citizens, and against any activity in which Israeli citizens seek to act against Israelis on behalf of a terrorist organization,” the security agencies said.Last week, a former IDF soldier was charged with training to fight abroad with ISIS.The Haifa District Attorney’s Office filed an indictment against Khamis Sawaed, a resident of the northern Bedouin village of Hussniyya in his 30s, at the city’s Magistrate’s Court along with a request to keep him in custody until the end of the legal proceedings.Sawaed indicated during police interrogation that he had watched how-to videos on warfare and missile and drone production out of “identification with the Islamic State terror group,” according to the Shin Bet and police.According to the indictment filed against Sawaed and cited in Hebrew-language media, he served in the IDF from 2017 to 2019, but in 2023 became interested in ISIS. He then began watching the training videos in 2024, after deciding he would eventually go abroad, either to Syria or somewhere in Africa, to fight alongside the group.And late last month, two teenagers from the Galilee were also indicted for planning ISIS-inspired attacks against security forces.The first suspect to be arrested, on August 4, was a 16-year-old resident of the Galilee.An investigation revealed that he was searching online for instructions on how to prepare explosive belts, and that he “intended to carry out an attack against police officers and Jewish soldiers on the Temple Mount,” the statement alleged.Several days later, as the investigation progressed, another suspect was arrested. He was identified as Ibrahim Kaabia, 19, a resident of Haifa. Kaabia also swore allegiance to ISIS and was planning to attack an army base in northern Israel,  police said.Dozens of Arab citizens have been arrested in recent years on suspicion of plotting attacks on behalf of Islamic State, including five residents of Taybe who allegedly plotted to set off a car bomb at Tel Aviv’s Azrieli mall in 2024.

Lebanese media reported 11 dead and five wounded in Israeli airstrikes overnight Sunday-Monday in the southern Lebanon town of Kfar Reman.According to the state-run National News Agency, a strike carried out by Israeli fighter jets on a residential building in the town after midnight killed nine people, including two children, and wounded five others.A separate drone strike on a car in Kfar Reman killed two paramedics of the Hezbollah-allied Amal movement’s Risala Scouts, according to NNA.NNA added that other Israeli strikes overnight hit Nabatieh and the nearby town of Arab Salim. A strike also destroyed a building in Deir al-Zahrani, after the Israel Defense Forces issued an evacuation warning for it.“Hezbollah’s terrorist activity compels the IDF to act forcefully against it,” the army said of the area, adding that it was targeting a “Hezbollah terrorist facility.”An evacuation warning had not been issued for Kfar Reman.There was no immediate comment from the IDF on any of the strikes.The latest strikes came after Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Sunday killed seven people and wounded 20 others, according to Lebanese authorities, after Hezbollah launched two explosive drones at Israeli troops operating in the area.Israeli forces remain deployed inside what Israel describes as a “security zone” extending roughly 10 kilometers (6 miles) into southern Lebanon along the border.Israel and Lebanon signed a US-brokered framework agreement on June 26 aimed at paving the way toward an eventual peace deal. THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Germany on Monday will challenge claims at the United Nations’ top court that it is “facilitating” acts of genocide in Gaza by providing arms and other military support to Israel.Nicaragua, which launched the case at the International Court of Justice, accuses Berlin of violating the Genocide Convention and international humanitarian law. While the case centers on Germany, it indirectly takes aim at Israel’s campaign in Gaza in response to the deadly October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas.Israel, which isn’t a party in the proceedings, strongly denies that its actions amount to acts of genocide.Monday’s hearing at the court in The Hague will address questions raised by Germany over whether the court has jurisdiction in the case.The conflict has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and devastated the enclave. Despite a fragile ceasefire brokered by the United States last year, violence has continued. Since the ceasefire was announced, Israeli fire has killed more than 1,300 Palestinians in Gaza, according to figures supplied by the Hamas-run health ministry, that do not differentiate between civilians and combatants.The IDF says five Israeli soldiers have also been killed in the same period.Germany has been a staunch supporter of Israel for decades and is the second-largest supplier of arms to Israel after the United States.Berlin denies Nicaragua’s allegations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered some illegal outposts in the West Bank dismantled, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich confirmed on Sunday, amid pressure from the US to crack down on violent settlers.According to a Reuters report, Netanyahu ordered the evictions in response to Washington’s pressure. The High Court of Justice on Sunday also assailed the government, Israel Defense Forces, and police for their failure to quell the attacks, though two arrests were made over an incident in the Nablus-area Palestinian town of Qusra.The outposts are considered illegal under Israeli law, as they’re established without all of the necessary permits — however, most of them receive varying degrees of government support and funding, and some have later been formally recognized.The state has from time to time demolished some outposts, but they are often rebuilt immediately after being demolished, and previous government decisions to crack down on the phenomenon have not been widely enforced.The Ynet news site reported that Netanyahu’s order targeted around 100 outposts across the West Bank.Smotrich, asked at a conference in Jerusalem about that report, said Netanyahu had given “an instruction to evict places built in Areas A and B,” referring to parts of the West Bank meant to be under full or partial Palestinian Authority control.The effort to crack down on Area B outposts, however, was reportedly not new, as it was part of a government decision in April, according to the Ma’ariv outlet.In addition to the lack of clarity over when the operation was ordered, it was also not immediately clear when it would begin. The Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to a request for comment on the reports.Two settlers, including soldier, arrested over Qusra attack-In a rare occurrence, two West Bank settlers, including an 18-year-old IDF soldier from the Jordan Valley, were arrested Sunday on suspicion of taking part in an August 29 attack in Qusra.The attack, which occurred weeks into a siege by settlers on several homes in Qusra, saw settlers seize a Palestinian home with a family inside.Officers who searched the car of one of the suspects, a 19-year-old from the northern West Bank, found a knife, a switchblade, and tear gas, according to police.The two suspects were arrested by police in cooperation with the Shin Bet, and the military police also took part in the arrest of the soldier, police said. Both suspects were taken for interrogation and would later be brought before a judge to have their detention extended.Another suspect in the Qusra attack who was arrested on Thursday will also be brought before a judge on Monday to have his detention extended, police said.“The joint investigative team of police and the Shin Bet is continuing efforts to gather evidence and take testimonies to locate and arrest everyone who took part in this serious incident,” police said.The West Bank has seen near-daily incidents of settler violence and harassment in recent months. Arrests are rare, and critics have accused the government of condoning or even encouraging the attacks.High Court: Settler attacks ‘completely unacceptable’The High Court, echoing outrage from others about the phenomenon, lambasted the IDF, Israel Police and Defense Minister Israel Katz on Sunday for failing to tackle the violence.The court was responding to a case brought by residents of three buildings in the West Bank Palestinian village of Jalud. They have petitioned the court to enable them to return safely to their homes, which extremist settlers besieged in July, setting up an illegal outpost and violently expelling them.“This is a completely unacceptable phenomenon that stands in contrast to the basic values and moral principles of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, and in contrast to the principles of liberty, fairness, and justice of Jewish heritage and the [biblical] prophets of Israel,” the court said in a decision signed by Supreme Court President Isaac Amit, and Justices Alex Stein and Yechiel Kasher.The justices added that extremist settler violence and the failure to tackle it also harm Israel’s image internationally as a state that respects the rule of law.The court took the IDF and police to task for failing to act effectively to enable the residents to return to their homes in Jalud in safety, and demanded answers to specific and granular questions regarding the case. Those questions included how security forces have worked to prosecute the perpetrators and how they are working to prevent future attacks on Jalud.The court further ordered the IDF and police to enable the residents to return to their homes in safety within 14 days, to provide them with protection when they return, and to enable them to bring in the necessary equipment and materials for fixing the homes and utilities damaged in the attack.The court also issued a conditional order in the case, putting the burden of proof on the IDF and police to actively demonstrate how they are implementing the court’s orders.IDF probing troops who seemed to eject Palestinian from vehicle-The IDF said it was investigating troops who allegedly ejected a Palestinian man out of the back of a military vehicle in the West Bank.Footage Saturday from al-Mughayyir showed an IDF “David” vehicle closing its rear door after the Palestinian man had apparently dropped out of it. The man was seen lying on the ground as the army vehicle drove off.In response to the footage, the army said that “the conduct of the troops toward the suspect and the person recorded in the video is being investigated.”It added that troops were in the village following reports of a suspected explosive device and a stone barrier placed on a road.Troops find rocket amid raid on Hamas cell in Aqqaba-In the village of Aqqaba, meanwhile, a rocket was found by Israeli forces during a raid against a Hamas cell, the police and military said.Officers of the police’s elite Yamam unit and IDF troops had raided the village following intelligence provided by the Shin Bet on a Hamas network in the area.During the raid, the police and military said the Yamam officers and IDF soldiers apprehended 10 Hamas operatives. JTA — As pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel progressives in the United States find some success at the 2026 ballot box, the long-gestating Israel divestment campaign is looking to capitalize in Rhode Island.Voters in Providence, the state capital, will vote on a referendum this November saying the city should refrain from investing in “foreign countries conducting ethnic cleansing, apartheid, illegal military occupation, or genocide.”The language of the actual ballot petition does not mention Israel, nor any other country, by name. But the signature campaign was led by Providence for Palestine, a local activist coalition, and both its proponents and opponents have framed the measure as a referendum on Israel and the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.With the referendum’s ballot placement secured, Providence has become the largest American municipality ever to place divestment before the voting public.“We’re in this moment when the general public at large, and particularly Democratic voters, very much understand what’s going on in Gaza and Palestine as genocide, as apartheid, and want their leaders to take action on it,” Zack Kligler, a lead organizer of the ballot initiative and member of the Rhode Island chapter of the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.Kligler described the current divestment campaign as having “definitely been led disproportionately by Jewish organizers.”To determine which countries are “conducting” any of its list of human rights abuses, the referendum would rely on “resolutions” from various bodies, including the United Nations Security Council, the International Court of Justice and “any” US court ruling or UN body. Some, though not all, of those bodies have reached conclusions that would implicate Israel in the ballot language’s divestment campaign.Both Israel and the Trump administration have strongly rejected all genocide accusations leveled against the country. “Apartheid” can be considered an independent crime under international law, while “ethnic cleansing” has no formal legal definition.Divestment from Israel has seen some success on the municipal level since the bloody October 7, 2023, Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel sparked the war against Hamas and other terror groups in Gaza, which has sunk the country’s popularity across the American electorate. Last year a non-binding divestment resolution in Somerville, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb with less than half of Providence’s population, became the first such initiative to win at the ballot box. Over objections from Jewish groups, the city this summer began exploring the question of how to enact the measure into law.Critics of divestment measures argue that they force local governments to put undue focus on international issues, could prompt division and backlash against local Jewish communities, and jeopardize public pension programs. The Providence campaign’s decision to avoid mentioning Israel in the ballot language sets it apart from similar initiatives, while also neutralizing claims made against other resolutions that such measures unfairly single out Israel.Yet local Jewish groups say the risk to the community remains.“All this will do [is] stoke more division in our community, and potentially make Jewish people here feel more unsafe,” Stephanie Hague, chief strategy officer of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, told JTA.Hague noted that the ballot language, as written, prompts questions about the authority of the international bodies making judgments about what constitutes genocide, ethnic cleansing and other terms in the initiative. She said that the Alliance would campaign against the ballot measure and, if it passes, explore legal options for putting up roadblocks to it.A 2024 proposal to the city council urged Providence, whose approximately 15,000 Jews make up around 7% of the population, not to invest in Israel bonds. The measure failed to make it out of committee. Likewise, the board of Brown University, the Ivy League school located in Providence, voted on a divestment resolution as part of the demands of the school’s pro-Palestinian encampment movement in 2024. It failed.Activists are more confident this time, citing the success in Somerville — where, unlike in Providence, Israel was mentioned by name as the target of the winning ballot measure. Also unlike Somerville, whose measure was non-binding, Providence’s initiative would mandate city action.Supporters also note that Providence joined a 2006 divestment initiative against Sudan to protest ethnic cleansing in Darfur, a divestment campaign that was spearheaded by American Jewish groups.“We’re really proud of the legacy of the American Jewish community and standing up on social issues,” Kligler, who grew up in the Conservative movement, attended a Jewish day school in Brooklyn and has family in Israel, told JTA.Unlike in Pittsburgh, where a similar 2024 initiative was undone before the election following legal challenges to the signatures, the Providence activists were able to collect and verify more than enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. The initiative’s supporters said they had identified around $2.5 million in city funds that would be affected by a divestment order. They cited American companies frequently targeted by pro-Palestinian activists, such as construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar and weapons firm Axon Enterprise.The city council of Portland, Maine, also passed a divestment proposal in 2024, though that city’s mayor, after initially endorsing the plan, later said he regretted having done so because of the divisiveness it spurred.Some progressive Jewish professionals in Providence say the initiative is in keeping with their values.“I know there are others out there who think that this is a situation where one would need to choose between their Jewish principles and other principles. I don’t perceive it that way,” Lex Rofeberg, senior Jewish educator with the alternative Jewish engagement network Judaism Unbound, told JTA about his support for the ballot campaign.Rofeberg, a Providence resident, said it would be wrong for non-Jews to conclude that “it is a Jewish value to support human rights violations.”“For those who see a ballot initiative that does not name Israel at all, but simply says we should not invest our dollars in atrocities — for people who see that as somehow threatening to Judaism, why would they think that?” he asked.Hague, the Jewish Alliance staffer opposing the initiative, sees just such a threat to Jewish interests. She acknowledged that it can be hard to communicate to non-Jews, who would understandably oppose genocide and apartheid, the ways in which her group sees the BDS movement as “a calling card for antisemitism.”She outlined what she saw as her group’s mission: “We have to do so much education in a short period of time, and helping people understand the Jewish community’s relationship to Israel, and then understanding this initiative’s relationship to the BDS movement and how those things are connected, and the real fear and isolation many Jewish Americans are already feeling, particularly after October 7.”The political environment, though, may be unfriendly to such efforts. Following broader national trends, the city’s Democratic mayoral primary, set for September 9, is also pivoting to a large degree around Israel.Incumbent Mayor Brett Smiley, who converted to Judaism and held a bar mitzvah while in office, is a vocal Israel supporter who opposes the ballot initiative. His progressive challenger, state Rep. David Morales, has backed the ballot initiative.So too have some local elected officials with Jewish heritage. “For any community that we are identified with, and for the sake of our soul and our humanity, we have to be able to say, ‘This is not OK,’” Rachel Miller, city council president, told JTA.Miller, who has a Jewish father and Catholic mother, said she considers herself “culturally” Jewish and objected to the idea that there is a single Jewish voice on the issue. She believes, she said, in “disconnecting the actions of a state against a group of people from my personal Jewish heritage, from my personal Jewish identity.”Even if passed, it’s possible the ballot initiative could run afoul of a statewide ban on working with government contractors who openly boycott Israel — a so-called “anti-BDS law,” one of many such measures enacted in a range of states.Those laws themselves have been debated for years. This fall, a ballot initiative in Oak Park, Illinois, a liberal Chicago suburb, will ask voters to register a formal objection to that state’s anti-boycott law. The initiative, which is opposed by local Jewish groups, survived a legal challenge on Monday.Hague acknowledged current Jewish divisions on Israel, and the difficult political climate for pro-Israel Jewish groups. Facing down a ballot initiative like this, she said, takes work.“I think we know public opinion is not supportive of Israel right now. I think it’s not an issue that people understand implicitly when they just read a ballot question,” she said. “So yes, of course, there’s reason for concern, and I think no matter what happens at the ballot, I still think it’s an important moment.”

A 9-year-old child was hospitalized in serious condition with inflammation of the brain in the intensive care unit at Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, the Health Ministry said Sunday, after being infected with a very rare “brain-eating” amoeba, apparently while swimming in the Sea of Galilee.Tests sent to the ministry’s laboratory overnight confirmed that the boy contracted an encephalitis infection from Naegleria fowleri, an amoeba that can be fatal.He was identified in Hebrew media as Baruch Neriya from Pardes Hannah. His family asked that people pray for the recovery of their son. The ceasefire has held, more or less, since October 2025, and at the end of July the next phase was announced. Whatever comes of it, the war is moving out of the field and into the archives. What gets written down now — in UN submissions, in prosecution dossiers, in the academic literature — is largely fixed.Much of it rests on a single database, and Gregory Rose, a professor of law at the University of Wollongong, and I have spent months analyzing it for a report published by the Henry Jackson Society and The Hague Initiative for International Cooperation. We found that the database cannot bear the weight.The World Health Organization’s Surveillance System on Attacks on Health Care, launched in 2017, holds 3,229 records for what it classifies as “Occupied Palestinian Territory”. That figure, or numbers derived from it, appears in special rapporteurs’ statements, in NGO submissions to UN bodies, and in the journals now assembling the case against Israel. It is presented as verified. It is treated as a casualty count. It is neither.Start with the container. The WHO folds East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza into one reporting unit. A checkpoint delay in Jerusalem, an ambulance search near Jenin, and an airstrike in Khan Younis all land in the same bucket and surface as one number. Anyone citing “over three thousand attacks on health care in the Palestinian territories” is describing a war in Gaza using a figure substantially composed of events that happened somewhere else.How much of it? By our analysis, 38.6 percent of the events in that bucket occurred during periods when there was no armed conflict at all. Under international law, an “attack” is an act of violence connected to an armed conflict. For nearly four in ten of these records, the precondition for the word “attack” is simply absent.The word is doing other work it cannot support. The WHO defines an attack as any act of verbal or physical violence, threat of violence, psychological violence, or obstruction interfering with health services. This includes insults, arrests, detentions and searches. By the WHO’s own written methodology, a doctor who arrives late for a shift after a checkpoint delay is an “attack on health care.” So is an ambulance searched for weapons, a practice the Red Cross accepts as lawful and one Israel has obvious cause to maintain.The consequence shows up in the severity data. We classified as “severe” those events involving heavy-weapons violence with no recorded militarization of the facility. In the WHO’s Palestinian bucket, 26.1 percent clear that bar; in Ukraine, 88.6 percent do. Only 6.3 percent of the Palestinian records involve a death, against 42.1 percent in Somalia and 45.5 percent in South Sudan.Then there is the question the methodology does not ask. Under the Geneva Conventions, a hospital forfeits its protected status when used to commit acts harmful to the enemy — as a command post, a weapons store, a tunnel access. The WHO records “militarization” as an event category, yet publishes nothing indicating that such a facility is treated differently from a protected one. The database appears to hold 112 events for Gaza between November 11 and 24, 2023, when the IDF surrounded Al-Shifa and searched it after three days of failed evacuation talks. An operation conducted because a hospital had lost its protection sits in the same ledger as an attack on one that had not.Nor does the WHO verify what it publishes. Staff score their confidence that an event occurred; they do not check reported deaths and injuries against death certificates or medical records, and they do not determine responsibility. One record that appears to correspond to the killing of a Médecins Sans Frontières physiotherapist — whom Israel identified as a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad — reports six killed and six injured as an attack on health care, with no public evidence the others were medical personnel.And consider the entry at the top of the entire global dataset. The deadliest event the WHO has recorded anywhere, in any conflict, is the explosion at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in October 2023 — blamed on Israel within hours, then traced by forensic analysis to a rocket that misfired on launch inside Gaza. The record stands as first entered. Israel cannot contest it. No state can.Which brings us to who is filing. The WHO relies on country offices and pre-identified local partners. In Gaza, the health ministry answers to Hamas. A health worker who reported the terror group’s use of a hospital would lose his job at best; that same worker has every reason to report Israeli conduct in detail. When we tried to match a random sample of records against public sources, we could not verify more than 90 percent.None of this means violence against health care in Gaza did not occur, or that it does not deserve documentation. It did, and it does. Our point is narrower: a dataset assembled this way cannot support the comparisons, the attributions, and the legal conclusions now being built on it.There is a moment to press this. Nominations for the next WHO director-general close on September 24, with the appointment due in May 2027. The organization should be asked for neutral terminology in place of “attack”; a prominent statement that its data supports neither cross-country comparison nor findings of legal responsibility; verification of reported deaths and injuries; and a public right of reply for the states these records describe.The war is passing into history. The record of it should be one that can survive examination.

The protests were in response to an influx of migrants from Morocco into Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa.The broader demonstrations in Madrid were called by Spain’s conservative People’s Party and far-right Vox party, drawing about 50,000 people to the streets, according to government estimates. Daniel chapter 10 provides us with a particularly fascinating incident from the life of the prophet Daniel. The incident has to do with answers to prayer and why those answers sometimes get delayed. In Daniel’s case, his answer was delayed for three full weeks.

Temperatures in built-up areas of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area can reach up to 4°C (7.2°F) higher than in surrounding open areas in summer, and up to 9°C in winter, according to new research on so-called urban heat islands, an issue of growing concern for planners in an era of global warming.The study, led by Prof. Oded Potchter of the central Holon Institute of Technology along with Tel Aviv University scientists Moshe Mandelmilch, Amit Goldberg and Prof. Yitzhak Omer, reveals microclimatic variations between specific parts of the metropolis and its greener hinterland, depending on the season, the time of day, and the type of urban landscape.Differences in air temperatures where humans walk—the space between the ground and tree canopies—vary more in the summer (up to 4°C) than in winter (up to 2°C, or 3.6°F).However, when looking at heat trapped on the surface of the ground, the reverse happens: surface temperature variations between the city and the countryside are more significant in winter (up to 9°C, or 16.2°F) than in summer (up to 4°C).This happens because winter weather suppresses strong daytime heat accumulation, while clear or breezy winter nights allow rural ground to radiate heat away and cool rapidly compared to the city.The most heat-retentive places are industrial areas, compact mid-rise residential neighborhoods like those in south Tel Aviv, and cities such as Bnei Brak, Ramat Gan, Bat Yam, Holon, and Rehovot, the study revealed.
