WHEN ARE THE 500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL IN THE SPRING TIME.(GET READY ISLAM TO BE BIRD SEED FOR THESE BIRDS)
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/m0bXU5Xqc5M
The
500 million migratory birds in Israel during the spring arrive from
Africa and head toward Europe and Asia, with the peak migration
occurring in March and April. While migration starts in late February,
the most intense movements, particularly of birds of prey, storks, and
pelicans, occur during the third week of March and continue into April.
Key Details on the Spring Migration
Peak Period: Mid-March through April.
Main
Migration Route: The birds use the Great Rift Valley, which includes
the Hula Valley and Eilat, acting as a "bottleneck" where millions of
birds fly through the narrow land bridge.
Best Spots: The Hula Lake
Park (Northern Israel) and the Eilat Birding Center (Southern Israel)
are primary locations for observing the migration.
Key Species:
Hundreds of thousands of white storks, along with black kites, raptors,
and pelicans, pass through over these months.
uration: The spring migration runs from late February and continues into June, though the heaviest traffic is in March/April.
The
500 million migratory birds fly over Israel in the fall between late
August and mid-December. The peak migration period for the autumn, when
the highest volume of bird traffic occurs, is typically October and
November.
Key Fall Migration Details
Location: The Hula Valley (Agamon Hula Park) in northern Israel is the premier spot to witness this phenomenon.
Timing: Migration starts as early as late June with some waders, but intensifies from mid-August through November.
Peak Festival: The "Annual Hula Valley Bird Festival" is usually held in November to align with the peak migration traffic.
Key
Species: Many birds of prey (raptors), including honey buzzards and
steppe eagles, cross during this time, along with massive flocks of
storks and cranes.
While roughly 500 million birds pass through in
the autumn on their way to Africa, the same number crosses again in the
spring (mid-February to May) on their way back to Europe and Asia.

UAE says dismantled Iran-linked group plotting 'terror' operations.
Dubai,
April 20 (AFP) Apr 20, 2026-Authorities in the United Arab Emirates
said Monday they arrested members of an Iran-linked group plotting
"terrorist" acts in the country, attempting to recruit Emiratis and
funnelling funds to "suspicious" foreign entities. The arrests came as
Gulf states clamped down on cells linked to Iran and its Lebanese ally
Hezbollah after Tehran struck its Gulf neighbours in the ongoing Middle
East war. Before a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran took
effect, the UAE had borne the brunt of Tehran's attacks, weathering more
Iranian strikes than any other country, though most were
intercepted."The State Security Department announced the dismantling of a
terrorist organisation and the arrest of its members," it said, adding
they were "planning systematic terrorist and sabotage operations" in the
UAE."Investigations revealed the organisation's ties to the Velayat-e
Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist) in Iran," it added in a statement
published on X.State security also shared mugshots of 27 men and their
names, without specifying their nationality.Group members were handed
charges including "establishing and operating a secret organisation,
running it from the UAE, pledging allegiance to foreign entities, and
harming national unity and social peace," it said. The group had
collected funds and transferred them to "suspicious foreign
entities".They had tried to recruit and indoctrinate people during
secret meetings that aimed to "infiltrate sensitive positions", it
said. The group also aimed to "spread misleading ideas among Emirati
youth and recruit them to serve foreign interests, incite against the
state's foreign policy and internal procedures, and attempt to portray
the country negatively," state security said.Last month, the UAE said it
arrested at least five members of a "terrorist network" linked to Iran
and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.Bahrain and Kuwait have also made
similar arrests.
Iran says no plan for US peace talks.
Tehran,
April 20 (AFP) Apr 20, 2026-Iran insisted it has no plan to attend a
new round of negotiations with the United States on Monday, as
uncertainty grows over a push to stop the Middle East war from
resuming.US President Donald Trump said he was sending negotiators to
Pakistan for talks on ending the war that engulfed the region and
rattled global markets, while repeating threats to attack Iran's energy
infrastructure if it did not make a deal. After initial talks ended
without a deal in Islamabad earlier this month, both sides have traded
accusations of ceasefire violations, including the US seizure of an
Iranian cargo ship early Monday that Trump said was trying to evade a US
blockade of the country's ports."We have no plans for the next round of
negotiation, and no decision has been made in this regard," said
foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei."While claiming diplomacy and
readiness for negotiations, the US is carrying out behaviours that do
not in any way indicate seriousness in pursuing a diplomatic process,"
he added, calling the US blockade and cargo ship seizure "clear
violations of the ceasefire".Iran says the US blockade and attack
breached the two-week truce set to end overnight Tuesday and threatened
to retaliate, while Trump says Tehran has breached the ceasefire in the
crucial Strait of Hormuz, which it has all but shut. The counter-claims
have thrown into fresh doubt the bid to end the war that began with
US-Israeli strikes on Iran the morning of February 28, killing the
country's supreme leader Ali Khamenei."We're offering a very fair and
reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it," Trump said in a social media
post.Oil prices jumped sharply on Monday over fears hostilities could
resume in the weeks-long war, after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz
again over the weekend following its brief reopening on Friday in
recognition of a ceasefire in Lebanon.- Security tight -In spite of the
uncertainty surrounding the talks in Pakistan, security has been visibly
stepped up in the capital, IslamabadAuthorities announced road closures
and traffic restrictions across the city, as well as in neighbouring
Rawalpindi. The US president said his negotiators, whom he did not name,
would arrive in Islamabad on Monday evening.A White House official said
Vice President JD Vance would lead the delegation after Trump said he
would not, citing security concerns. He would be joined by Middle East
envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, the official
said.Trump has been under pressure to find an off-ramp since Tehran
moved to choke off the Strait of Hormuz. But the cargo ship attack and
naval blockade to cut off Iran's oil revenues drew renewed threats from
Tehran instead of immediately bringing them back to the negotiating
table. On Sunday, Trump announced that a massive Iranian-flagged cargo
ship "tried to get past our Naval Blockade, and it did not go well for
them," adding a US destroyer blew "a hole in the engineroom" before US
Marines seized the vessel. The ISNA news agency later cited a
spokesperson for Iran's central command centre as warning that the
military "will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy and
the US military".Tasnim news agency reported Tehran had sent drones in
the direction of US military ships after Touska was seized and
"attacked".Iran's Revolutionary Guards for their part warned that any
attempt to pass through the strait without permission "will be
considered cooperation with the enemy, and the offending vessel will be
targeted".- Sticking points -Iran's foreign ministry said delays in
implementing a ceasefire in Lebanon, where Israel has been fighting
militant group Hezbollah, was also a violation of the ceasefire.A
separate truce agreed between Israel and Lebanon took effect on Friday,
which included Hezbollah, whose rocket fire in support of Iran drew
Lebanon into the war.Israel's military on Monday warned Lebanese
civilians against returning to dozens of villages in southern Lebanon,
claiming Hezbollah's activities in the area were violating that
agreement.Thousands of displaced residents have begun making their way
back to southern Lebanon since the truce began.Israel's Defence Minister
Israel Katz said Sunday that the military would use "full force"
against any threats in Lebanon, even during the ceasefire. He also vowed
to level homes allegedly used by Hezbollah, with Lebanese state media
reporting that demolitions were underway.Another major issue in the
US-Iran negotiations has been Tehran's stockpile of enriched
uranium.Trump said on Friday that Iran had agreed to hand over its
roughly 440 kilograms (970 pounds) of enriched uranium."We're going to
get it by going in with Iran, with lots of excavators," he said. But
Iran's foreign ministry has said the stockpile, thought to be buried
from US bombing in last June's 12-day war, was "not going to be
transferred anywhere".Baqaei said on Monday that the issue of moving the
country's enriched uranium was not discussed with US negotiators."It
was never raised as an option for us," he said.burs-jfx/ser
Xi tells Saudi prince passage through Hormuz 'should be maintained': state media.
Beijing,
April 20 (AFP) Apr 20, 2026-Chinese President Xi Jinping told Saudi
Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in a phone call on Monday that
"normal traffic" through the vital Strait of Hormuz "should be
maintained", state media said."Normal navigation through the Strait of
Hormuz should be maintained, this is in the shared interests of regional
countries and the international community," Xi said, according to state
broadcaster CCTV.The Chinese leader has sought to position Beijing as a
stable counterweight in the face of the US- and Israeli-led
conflict.China is a major trading partner of Gulf countries and the main
buyer of Iranian oil, most of which passes through the Hormuz strait.Xi
also stressed in the call with the Saudi prince that China "advocates
for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire", CCTV reported.
Trump says will bring Iran uranium 'back home to the USA'
Phoenix,
April 17 (AFP) Apr 17, 2026-President Donald Trump said Friday that the
United States and Iran would jointly remove uranium from Tehran's
nuclear sites with excavators under any peace deal, before the material
is transferred to US territory.Trump's comment came despite Iran's
foreign ministry saying earlier that the Islamic Republic's stockpile of
enriched uranium would not be transferred "anywhere.""Somebody said,
how are we going to get the nuclear dust? We're going to get it by going
in with Iran, with lots of excavators," Trump told a gathering of the
conservative Turning Point USA movement in Phoenix, Arizona."We need the
biggest excavators you can imagine," he added."But we're going to go in
together with Iran. We're going to get it. We're going to take it back
home to the USA very soon."Trump's comments elaborated on his claim on
Thursday that Iran had agreed to hand over its enriched uranium, but
without giving any details on such a transfer. The US leader regularly
uses the term "nuclear dust" to refer to Iran's stock of enriched
uranium, which the United States accuses Iran of hoarding in order to
make an atomic bomb. But he has also sometimes used it to refer to
material left from US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities in June last
year.Trump sounded increasingly upbeat on Friday about the chances of a
peace deal with Iran, telling AFP on Friday there were "no sticking
points" and a deal was "very close."His remarks on Iran came during a
speech to Turning Point USA, where he was introduced by Erika Kirk, the
widow of the group's founder Charlie Kirk -- a Trump ally who was
assassinated in September.
Iran says its enriched uranium 'not going to be transferred'
Tehran,
April 17 (AFP) Apr 17, 2026-Iran's foreign ministry on Friday said the
country's stockpile of enriched uranium would not be transferred
"anywhere", denying an earlier claim by US President Donald Trump that
the Islamic republic had agreed to hand it over."Iran's enriched uranium
is not going to be transferred anywhere," Iranian foreign ministry
spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told state TV."Transfer of Iran's enriched
uranium to the US has never been raised in negotiations."Trump posted on
his Truth Social platform earlier Friday: "The U.S.A. will get all
Nuclear 'Dust,' created by our great B2 Bombers," referring to enriched
uranium buried by US strikes last year. But Baqaei said recent talks
centred on solving the conflict and not on recovering Iran's
uranium."The previous negotiations focused on the nuclear issue, but now
the negotiations are focused on ending the war, and naturally the range
of topics discussed has become wider and more diverse," he said."The
10-point plan for lifting sanctions is very important to us. The issue
of compensation for the damages incurred during the imposed war is of
particular importance."He also took aim at Trump for posting on his
Truth Social platform Friday that the US naval blockade of Iranian ports
would remain in place until a peace deal with Tehran was reached,
despite Tehran declaring the Strait of Hormuz reopened."The opening and
closing of the Strait of Hormuz, does not take place on internet, it is
determined in the field, and our armed forces certainly know how to
behave in response to any action by the other side," said Baqaei."What
they call a naval blockade will definitely be met with an appropriate
response from Iran. A naval blockade is a violation of the ceasefire and
Iran will definitely take the necessary measures."His comments came
after US news outlet Axios reported that Washington and Tehran were
negotiating a plan that would include Washington releasing $20 billion
in frozen Iranian funds in return for Iran giving up its stockpile of
enriched uranium.Tehran still possesses a significant quantity of
uranium enriched both to 60 percent, close to the 90-percent level
required to make an atomic bomb, as well as a stockpile of uranium
enriched to 20 percent, another critical threshold.Prior to US strikes
in June 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) calculated
that Iran possessed approximately 440 kilogrammes of uranium enriched to
60 percent, well above the 3.67-percent limit set by a 2015 agreement
from which the United States subsequently withdrew.Since June 2025, the
fate of this stockpile has remained uncertain, with Tehran refusing
access to IAEA inspectors at the sites ravaged by US and Israeli
strikes.
Israel announces exposure of Iranian terror network
targeting Israelis abroad-Arrests by Azerbaijan over planned synagogue
and embassy attacks exposed drone plots and intelligence gathering
operations; ringleaders killed during Iran war By Lazar Berman-Today,
1:29 pm-APR 20,26
Israel in recent months exposed an Iranian
terror network that targeted Israeli officials and assets around the
world, according to a joint statement Monday by the Mossad, Israel
Defense Forces, and Shin Bet.Senior operatives in the network were
killed during the US-Israeli campaign against Iran that began on
February 28.The Israeli statement said the network was uncovered
following the arrests of several members of the network in Azerbaijan in
March.Azerbaijan said last month that it had foiled a series of Iranian
terror attacks on its territory, including ones targeting the Israeli
embassy in Baku, a synagogue and Jewish community leaders. At least
seven Azeri nationals were arrested in connection with the probe. In a
statement, Azerbaijan’s state security service said at the time that it
had “prevented terrorist acts and intelligence operations in Azerbaijan
organized by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).”Also among
the planned targets was the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which runs
through neighboring Georgia and Turkey and carries around a third of
Israel’s oil imports, it said.According to Monday’s Israeli statement,
members of the cell had smuggled explosive drones into Azerbaijan and
were gathering intelligence on potential targets under the direct
instructions of their Iranian handlers. The arrests of the cell members
led to the uncovering of the terror network and its chain of
command.Rahman Moqadam, head of the Special Operations Division (4000)
within IRGC intelligence, was in charge of the network. He was killed at
the beginning of the war with Iran, known in Israel as Operation
Roaring Lion.Moqadam recruited and trained operatives both inside and
outside of Iran, and asked them to gather intelligence on Israeli
political leaders, security officials, Israeli and Western military
installations, ports, and Israeli ships around the world.Moqadam served
under senior IRGC intelligence official Majid Khademi, Israel said.
Khademi was also killed by Israel during the war.A central player in
Moqadam’s network was Mohsen Suri, another member of Division 4000, who
met with terror cells outside of Iran. He too was killed during the war
in an Israeli strike on an IRGC safehouse.Mahdi Yekeh-Dehghan led the
network in Azerbaijan and beyond. His role was discovered in January,
when Turkish authorities arrested six people, including an Iranian
national, on charges of political and military espionage for Iran, after
coordinated raids across five provinces. Yekeh-Deghan directed the
cell, working to smuggle explosive drones from Iran through Turkey to
Cyprus, and to gather intelligence on US forces at Turkey’s Incirlik
Base. The Israeli statement noted that in the wake of the US-Israeli war
against Iran, the IRGC has redoubled its efforts to establish terror
cells abroad and carry out attacks.Throughout the course of the war,
European countries have stepped up their domestic security efforts over
rising fears that Iran would try to orchestrate terror attacks on their
soil in retribution.Since February 28, Europe has seen a string of
attacks, largely targeting Jewish and Israeli institutions, including a
blast that caused damage to a synagogue in Belgium and an arson attack
on four ambulances run by the Jewish medical charity Hatzolah in London.
Several of the attacks have been claimed by the Harakat Ashab al-Yamin
al-Islamiya group, a newly established Iran-linked terror
organization.Additionally, last December, the IDF said troops arrested
several members of a terror cell deployed by Iran in southern Syria,
targeting the group based on intelligence gathered in the weeks leading
up to the raid.

Is Israel replicating Gaza's 'Yellow Line' in south Lebanon?
Beirut,
Lebanon, April 20 (AFP) Apr 20, 2026-Israel says it has established a
"Yellow Line" in south Lebanon near the border, where its forces are
operating despite a 10-day ceasefire with Iran-backed militant group
Hezbollah. What is the so-called "Yellow Line", how does it resemble an
Israeli military demarcation in the Gaza Strip and where does it leave
Lebanon? What has Israel announced? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu said Israel agreed to the truce, which took effect on Friday,
but would maintain a 10-kilometre (six-mile) deep "security zone" along
the border in southern Lebanon. On Saturday, Israel's military announced a
"Yellow Line" in the country's south. The following day, it published a
map identifying a "forward defence line", stretching from the
Mediterranean in the west up to Lebanon's border with Syria in the
east.It said "five divisions, alongside Israeli navy forces" were
operating in the area to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure and "prevent
direct threats to communities in northern Israel".The area includes
frontier villages that were destroyed or heavily damaged after a
previous round of hostilities erupted between Israel and Hezbollah in
2023.Most locals have fled the area, though residents of some Christian
villages have been defying Israeli army evacuation orders.UN
peacekeepers are also stationed there. On Monday, Israel's military
warned Lebanese civilians against returning to dozens of villages south
of the "forward defence line", claiming Hezbollah's activities in the
area were violating the ceasefire.Israeli troops have been destroying
buildings in border towns since the truce began.Israel has repeatedly
tried to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. In 2000 after
persistent pressure from Hezbollah, Israeli troops withdrew from
Lebanese territory after some two decades of occupation.Similar to Gaza?
In Gaza, the "Yellow Line" refers to an Israeli military demarcation
established during an October 2025 ceasefire with Palestinian militant
group Hamas, creating a de facto boundary inside the Palestinian
territory. It effectively splits Gaza between an area under direct
Israeli military control where Palestinians are not permitted, and a
Hamas-governed area where residents remain vulnerable to Israeli
strikes. The line has reshaped daily life for Gazans and prevented tens
of thousands of displaced Palestinians from returning home.Israel's
military regularly says it has targeted individuals it describes as
militants approaching the line in Gaza, and has begun doing the same in
Lebanon.Lebanese military expert Hassan Jouni told AFP that "the Yellow
Line in Lebanon is a copy of the idea and philosophy of the Yellow Line
in Gaza", even bearing the same name.In Gaza, however, the line was "the
result of an agreement with Hamas. In Lebanon, there is no agreement...
it was decided unilaterally" by Israel, he said, calling it "an
aggressive decision".The line represents a new Israeli security border, a
defensive line "that will certainly be fortified" to protect northern
Israel's towns and villages, and potentially "a line for launching new
offensive operations", he added.It creates "a so-called free-fire area,
like in Gaza, where any activity... is considered suspicious and
justifies opening fire".What options does Lebanon have? Lebanese
President Joseph Aoun said Monday that planned direct talks with Israel
aimed to end hostilities and Israel's occupation in the south.Under the
truce terms, which do not mention an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon,
Israel reserves the right to continue targeting Hezbollah to prevent
"planned, imminent or ongoing attacks".Israeli forces never fully
withdrew after the last war, despite being required to under a November
2024 ceasefire.Hezbollah strongly opposes the planned negotiations and
has also called on Israeli troops to withdraw, decrying what it sees as
Israeli expansionism.Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah told AFP on
Monday that "we will bring down this Yellow Line through the resistance
(Hezbollah), with our insistence on our legitimate right to defend
ourselves and our country".He vowed that Israel would be unable to set
up any buffer zone in south Lebanon, and that Hezbollah would drive out
Israeli troops if they stay "on any inch of our territory".Jouni said
the "Yellow Line" would be a flashpoint for "political confrontation
firstly, and a military confrontation by Hezbollah".He said he expected
to see both "a political path that starts with the negotiations", and an
approach on the ground "that will be decided according to the regional
situation... between Iran and America"."Maybe US President Donald Trump
will surprise everyone by pressuring Israel to withdraw" from Lebanon,
Jouni added.
Radical settler group to stage march by Gaza border
to ‘renew Jewish hold on Gaza Strip’Nachala settlement cadres to be
among participants; ‘It is our right to settle in the entire Land of
Israel including Gaza,’ says Likud MK supporting Independence Day event
By Jeremy SharonToday, 1:50 pm-APR 20,26
A large march and rally
close to the Gaza border is being planned by the Nachala settlement
movement for Independence Day on Wednesday, under the banner of “The
People of Israel are Returning to Gaza.”The event will see members of
Nachala settlement cadres, created to establish new settlements in Gaza
at a moment’s notice, march towards Gaza from Kibbutz Mefalsim, together
with other activists, some bereaved families and discharged
soldiers.Similar events staged by Nachala in the past have resulted in
efforts by some activists to break into Gaza and set up outposts there,
although all such attempts have been thwarted by the IDF.The latest such
effort came in December 2025, when two of Nachala’s Gaza settlement
cadres entered the strip and planted Israeli flags at the sites of the
former settlements of Morag and Kfar Darom.Last Wednesday, the heads of
the Nachala organization, Daniella Weiss and Zvi Elimelech Sharbaf,
conducted what they called “a tour of the northern part of the Gaza
Strip,” and sent back a video of part of their tour. It is not clear if
they actually managed to enter the territory or merely viewed it from
near the border. They claimed to be just 200 meters from the former
Israeli settlement of Elei Sinai, which was located in Gaza’s northern
edge, on the border with Israel.“We will bring a few caravans, we will
march not [even] 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and here is the Elei Sinai
settlement,” Weiss said excitedly in the video.Nachala is a radical
organization that has helped establish illegal settlements in the West
Bank and has advocated for the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian
population of Gaza ever since the October 7, 2023, atrocities.According
to Nachala, the organization is defining the upcoming Independence Day
event as a “national, state event seeking to connect the heroism of the
fighters on the ground and the public demand to renew the Jewish hold on
the Gaza Strip as a Zionist and defensive response.”The organization
has been working with several MKs to drum up interest and participation
in the upcoming march.Far-right MK Limor Son Har Melech of Otzma Yehudit
issued a video message on her social media accounts and Nachala’s
calling for members of the public to attend the rally on Independence
Day, saying that Nachala was “inviting everyone to celebrate in the Gaza
Strip,” and called herself for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.“Everyone
already knows the real and only answer to terrorism and a murderous
enemy: conquest, expulsion and settlement,” said Son Har Melech.“Only
strong Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip will bring the security that
we are hoping for,” she declared.Another member of Knesset who has
promoted the march is MK Osher Shekalim of the Likud party.“We will
convey the message that it is our right to settle in the entire Land of
Israel, including Gaza,” Shekalim said in his own video message
promoting the Nachala event.“We will also convey the message that
settlement is the solution, it is our security, and it is, God willing,
also our total victory over our enemies.”
Israel army warns Lebanese against returning to south.
Jerusalem,
April 20 (AFP) Apr 20, 2026-Israel's military on Monday warned Lebanese
civilians against returning to dozens of villages in southern Lebanon,
claiming Hezbollah's activities in the area were violating a ceasefire
agreement struck last week.Thousands of displaced residents have begun
making their way back to parts of southern Lebanon since the truce
between Israel and Lebanon took effect on Friday.Since the ceasefire
began, Lebanon's armed forces have reopened a key road linking the
southern city of Nabatiyeh with the Khardali area after it was closed
due to Israeli strikes. They have also partially restored access to the
Burj Rahal-Tyre bridge. But the Israeli military on Monday urged
civilians to avoid returning to numerous villages in the
south."Hezbollah has continued its terrorist activity during the
ceasefire in violation of the agreement; accordingly, the IDF remains
deployed in the defensive area," the military's Arabic-language
spokesman Colonel Avichay Adraee said on X."For your safety and the
safety of your families, and until further notice, we urge you not to
move south of the Forward Defence Line," he said, referring to a
boundary marking an area occupied by Israeli troops. On Saturday, senior
Hezbollah official Mahmud Qamati also warned residents against
returning."Israeli treachery is expected at any time, and this is a
temporary truce," he said."Take a breath, relax a little, but do not
abandon the places you have taken refuge in until we are completely
reassured about your return" to your homes, he said.Israel's Defence
Minister Israel Katz said Sunday that the military had been ordered to
use "full force" against any threats in Lebanon even during the
ceasefire. He also vowed to level homes allegedly used by Hezbollah, with
Lebanese state media reporting that demolitions were underway. The
military published a map showing its "forward defence line" and an area
stretching the length of the Israel-Lebanon border where it said its
forces were operating to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure and "prevent
direct threats to communities in northern Israel".burs-jd/axn
North Korea uses cluster bombs in latest missile test: KCNA.
Seoul,
April 20 (AFP) Apr 20, 2026-North Korea fired multiple short-range
ballistic missiles that tested the power of its cluster munitions, its
government news agency said on Monday, confirming the latest in a flurry
of launches by the nuclear-armed state. The Sunday launches, which were
supervised by leader Kim Jong Un, aimed to "verify the characteristics
and power of cluster bomb warhead and fragmentation mine warhead applied
to the tactical ballistic missile", the Korean Central News Agency
(KCNA) reported. They followed other tests in recent weeks of weaponry,
including ballistic missiles, anti-warship cruise missiles and cluster
munitions.Neither Korea has signed the 2008 Oslo convention against
cluster bombs.South Korea condemned the launches and called on the North
to cease "provocations".KCNA said the manoeuvre tested the warhead of
the Hwasongpho-11 Ra surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missile.Five
projectiles were fired towards a target area around an island about 136
kilometres (85 miles) from the launch site, it said. They struck an area
of 12.5 to 13 hectares with "very high density, fully displaying their
combat might".Kim "expressed great satisfaction over the test results"
and noted that the development of cluster bomb warheads "can... boost
the high-density striking capability to quell a specific target area as
well as the high-precision striking capability", KCNA said.Hong Min, a
senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification,
said the reported range would put Seoul and key US military
installations within Pyongyang's reach."This system appears designed to
fill the gap between multiple rocket launchers and short-range ballistic
missiles," he said.Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul's University of
North Korean Studies, noted that frontline corps commanders observed the
test, in contrast to the weapons researchers who watched previous
ones."This suggests the system is nearing operational deployment, with
the capability to be launched directly from forward positions against
South Korea and US bases," he said. The United States stations about
28,000 troops in the South to help it defend against military threats
from the North.- 'Firm' defence posture -South Korea reported the test
on Sunday, saying its military had "detected several short-range
ballistic missiles" fired from the Sinpo area in eastern North
Korea.Seoul said it was maintaining a "firm combined defence posture"
with the United States and would "respond overwhelmingly to any
provocation"."Pyongyang must immediately halt its successive missile
provocations that are heightening tensions", and "actively engage in the
South Korean government's efforts to establish peace", the defence
ministry said. But analysts said the tests signalled that Pyongyang had
rejected Seoul's attempts to repair strained ties.Among them was an
expression of regret from Seoul over civilian drone incursions into the
North in January, a gesture that Pyongyang initially seemed to welcome
before reverting to describing the South as its "most hostile" enemy
state.- Two more destroyers -North Korea is subject to multiple United
Nations sanctions banning its nuclear weapons development and use of
ballistic missile technology, restrictions it has repeatedly
flouted.Earlier in April, Kim Jong Un oversaw tests of strategic cruise
missiles launched from a naval warship, with official photos showing him
watching the firings flanked by military officials. Those tests were
carried out from the Choe Hyon, one of two 5,000-tonne destroyers in the
North's arsenal, both launched last year. The North is also building two
more 5,000-tonne class destroyers to add to its fleet.Citing satellite
imagery from a US-based intelligence firm, a South Korean lawmaker said
this month that the North was "accelerating the naval forces'
modernisation on the back of military assistance from Russia".North
Korea has sent ground troops and artillery shells to support Russia's
invasion of Ukraine, and observers say Pyongyang is receiving military
technology assistance from Moscow in return.

As IDF maintains hold on south Lebanon, residents of over
50 villages told to stay away-Amid truce, Lebanon’s President Aoun says
he has chosen to negotiate with Israel ‘to save’ his country By Emanuel

Israel on Monday warned residents of south Lebanon to stay
out of a belt of territory running the length of the border and not to
approach the area of the Litani River, entrenching its grip over
southern Lebanon despite a ceasefire in the war with
Hezbollah.Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that planned
talks with Israel aim to end hostilities and the Israeli occupation in
the south, as he named an ex-ambassador to the United States to lead the
delegation.Lebanon, said Aoun, “is facing two options: either the
continuation of the war with all its humanitarian, social, economic, and
sovereignty repercussions, or negotiations to put an end to this war
and achieve sustainable stability.”“I have chosen negotiation,” said
Aoun, according to his office, “and I am full of hope that we will be
able to save Lebanon.”Aoun named former Lebanese ambassador to
Washington Simon Karam to head the negotiations with Israel, and said
“no one will share this task with Lebanon or take its place.”The
US-mediated, 10-day ceasefire took effect on Thursday, largely stopping
the war between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah that spiraled out of
the conflict between the United States and Iran. The ceasefire halted
more than six weeks of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the
Lebanese terror group backed by Iran, but the IDF has continued to
respond to what it says are violations of the ceasefire. The truce
remains fragile, with Israeli troops holding on to territory deep in the
south of Lebanon, aiming to create a buffer zone to shield northern
Israel from Hezbollah attacks, while the group says it maintains the
“right to resist” the Israeli military presence in Lebanon. The Israeli
military posted a map on social media with a red line across much of the
south, and said residents should not move into the area between it and
the border, saying IDF troops were maintaining positions in the
south.“During the ceasefire agreement, the IDF continues to remain
deployed in its positions in southern Lebanon in the face of the ongoing
terror activity of Hezbollah,” army spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee said
in a post on X.Adraee named 58 villages to which residents should not
return. “In addition, do not approach the Litani River area, Wadi
al-Salhani, and Saluki,” he added.During the ceasefire, the military has
said that it would continue to clear the area currently under its
control of Hezbollah infrastructure, operatives, and any other
threats.Stretching east to west, the deployment line on the map runs
5-10 km (3-5 miles) deep from the border into Lebanese territory,
covering an area where the IDF has been razing entire villages, as
instructed by Defense Minister Israel Katz, to prevent Hezbollah from
using the area to stage attacks.Ali Hassan Khalil, a top aide to
Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, said Monday
that Israel’s destruction of civilian homes in the south amounted to “a
clear war crime.”The military has insisted that it is destroying
Hezbollah infrastructure, which it says is often embedded within
civilian homes.US President Donald Trump announced the truce in Lebanon
on Thursday. Trump later said he expected Aoun and Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the White House in the coming days. The
ceasefire came days after Lebanon and Israel’s ambassadors to the US
held a meeting in Washington, the first direct meeting between the two
countries in decades, as they have technically been at war since
1948.Hezbollah also warns against return-Senior Hezbollah official
Mahmoud Qamati, addressing residents of the Hezbollah-controlled
southern suburbs of Beirut on Saturday, told them they shouldn’t return
to their homes yet because of the risk of Israeli attack.“Israeli
treachery is expected at any time, and this is a temporary truce,” the
senior Hezbollah leader said.“Take a breath, relax a little, but do not
abandon the places you have taken refuge in until we are completely
reassured about your return” to your homes, he added.Local councils in
the south also warned residents against returning home, saying doing so
was not yet safe.Hezbollah, in a statement on Monday, said explosive
devices previously planted by its operatives had detonated as a convoy
of eight armoured military vehicles was moving between Taybeh and Deir
Siryan. The military, in response to a query, confirmed that one armored
vehicle was “likely hit by an explosive device,” and that no injuries
were caused. The IDF said the incident was under further
investigation. Two reservist soldiers were killed over the weekend as a
result of Hezbollah-placed explosives, and over a dozen more were
wounded, according to the military.Lebanon was dragged into the regional
war on March 2, when Hezbollah opened fire on Israel in support of
Tehran.Israel ordered a wide-scale evacuation of all of southern
Lebanon, which Lebanese civilians largely abided by, especially in
villages close to the border, leaving behind an estimated 1,000
Hezbollah operatives — most of whom have been killed, according to the
Israeli army.Lebanese authorities say the subsequent Israeli offensive
has killed more than 2,300 people, including 177 children, and forced
more than 1.2 million to flee. These figures do not differentiate
between civilians and combatants.Hezbollah has not disclosed its
casualty figures, but the IDF says at least 1,800 Hezbollah fighters
have been killed since March 2.Hezbollah has fired some 5,500 rockets at
IDF troops operating in the south of the country, as well as around
2,500 at Israel amid the fighting. The terror group’s attacks have killed
two civilians in Israel, while 15 Israeli soldiers have been killed in
southern Lebanon. Additionally, an Israeli civilian was mistakenly
killed in the north by Israeli artillery shelling.
Interview
'Our allies are rightly let down that we didn't help them'Iran ‘is our
war,’ says UK lawmaker Greg Smith — contrary toPM Starmer’s claims-The
new head of the Conservative Friends of Israel lambasts the Labour
party’s handling of the US-Israel conflict with Iran, as antisemitism in
Britain reaches ‘appalling’ levels-By Robert Philpot-APR 20,26-Today,
1:55 pm
LONDON — Ever since the United States and Israel jointly
launched strikes on the Iranian regime in late February, British Prime
Minister Keir Starmer has repeated the mantra: “This is not our
war.”Polls suggest Starmer’s position may be popular, but it’s not
shared by his Conservative opponents.“This is our war. It has already
reached the United Kingdom,” says Greg Smith, the newly appointed chair
of Conservative Friends of Israel, citing the 20-plus Iranian-backed
terror plots in Britain detected by MI5 between late 2024 and late 2025.
“It’s fantastic that our security services have foiled those plots, but
at some point, if they keep trying, one will get through,” said
Smith.Overnight Sunday, northwest London’s Kenton United Synagogue was
targeted in an arson attack. A pro-Iranian government Islamist group
claimed responsibility for this and a recent spate of attacks across
Europe on US, Israeli and Jewish targets.Smith, the Conservative MP for
the constituency of Mid Buckinghamshire in southern England, tells The
Times of Israel in an interview that “nobody wants war.” But, he adds,
he does not doubt that getting rid of the regime in Tehran is “a
fundamentally good thing.”“That Iranian regime is the root of all evil
when it comes to the financing of terror, the [main] victims of which
are Israel,” Smith says. “This is a regime that massacres its own people
for having the audacity to protest in the tens of thousands.”Smith
welcomes the two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US, but says “the
real test” is whether the Iranian regime “ceases all hostility towards
Israel, stops funding terror organizations across the region and desists
in its own malign behavior towards the West.”Since Smith sat for the
interview, the US has imposed a naval blockade on Iran as talks yielded
little movement on the issues of the Strait of Hormuz and the Islamic
Republic’s nuclear program.US President Donald Trump has expressed
confidence that the pressure tactic could push Iran into accepting an
agreement that would bring with it better ties with the West and a level
of prosperity not seen in decades, but Smith seems less optimistic that
the current hardline regime can be successfully negotiated with.“This
is not a regime that is interested in talking,” he says, adding that
negotiations over its nuclear program simply resulted in a “level of
enriched uranium that is near as, damn it, a nuclear weapon. Talks
didn’t work very well in that, did they?”His position on the conflict
reflects the more hawkish stance adopted by the Conservative leadership
towards the conflict. Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch welcomed the
US-Israeli strikes and attacked Starmer for failing to give the US
permission to use American bases on British soil for its initial
operations. As the domestic economic fallout of the war has mounted, and
public opposition to it has stiffened, the Tories have moderated their
tone without substantively altering their position. The Conservatives are
especially critical of the Labour government’s preparedness for a
conflict in the region. The British military, charges Smith, appears to
have been held back, and Starmer “seemed to be taken by surprise” by the
initial US strikes, despite Trump signaling “for weeks” that he
intended to take action.“The UK had no assets in the region; nothing
there ready to defend our own bases if nothing else,” Smith says. “When
the [Iranian] missile was launched at [joint UK-US military base] Diego
Garcia, we were essentially defenseless. We had to rely on the Americans
to defend… our own asset.”British allies, such as the UAE and Bahrain,
which have come under sustained Iranian bombardment, he believes, “are
right to feel let down that the United Kingdom wasn’t there to help
them.”While Starmer eventually compromised, allowing the US to use UK
bases for defensive operations, Smith contrasts the prime minister’s
approach to the manner in which his predecessor, Rishi Sunak, used
British forces to help defend Israel when it came under attack from Iran
in April 2024.‘The UK had no assets in the region; nothing there ready
to defend our own bases if nothing else’Smith is equally frustrated by
the government’s failure to proscribe Iran’s paramilitary Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps, despite a pre-election commitment to do so,
and readily concedes the Tories failed to act during their 14-year
stretch in office.“I called for the last Conservative government to do
this … and I’ve carried on calling on this government to do it,” Smith
says.“It’s not even contentious in the House of Commons,” he says,
noting that, aside from the Tories, many on the Labour backbenches and
even the dovish Liberal Democrats are supportive. “It is actually beyond
me, not least given the foiled plots on United Kingdom soil… why no
government has been willing to go there [and ban it].”Unsurprisingly,
Smith is highly critical of Labour’s approach towards Israel,
attributing it to domestic political pressures. Within months of the
party taking office, its backbenchers became “very irritable,” Smith
says.Amid what he calls a “constant flow of misinformation” about the
war in Gaza, Smith believes the government began to increasingly give
ground to a restive Labour party. The partial ban on arms exports to
Israel and the decision to suspend negotiations on a free trade
agreement culminated last summer in Starmer’s decision to recognize a
Palestinian state. It was, Smith says, “a deeply domestic political
decision.” Similarly, he adds, the UK continues to refuse to follow
Germany in lifting its arms embargo, despite the ostensible end of the
Gaza conflict. Again, the only explanation, he believes, is “domestic
political pressure.”Smith is adamant that, had the Conservative
government been re-elected in July 2024, it would not have followed
Australia, Canada and European allies like France down the path of
recognition.“There is no way on earth a Conservative government would
have recognized a state of Palestine at a point where Hamas was still
actively militarized… still clearly rearming for a wider offensive,
still with the threats from the Houthis, Hezbollah in Lebanon, [and] the
IRGC in Iran,” Smith says.‘You can’t get into a two-state solution when
one of the key components of one of those states is still run by
terrorists’The Tories, says Smith, maintain their “broad support for a
long-term two-state solution” while recognizing “you can’t get into that
two-state solution when one of the key components of one of those
states is still run by terrorists.”None of this is likely to improve,
believes Smith, with the fiercely anti-Israel Green party competing hard
with Labour for left-wing voters. Starmer’s loss of a special election
to the Greens in a formerly solid Labour seat in northwest England in
March left the party reeling.“The level of sectarian politics there was
off the charts,” says Smith. “It’s like we’ve never seen before in the
United Kingdom. Anyone would think that the Green candidate was the Gaza
candidate.”As he notes, Labour’s defeat followed a series of
politically bloody local battles during the 2024 general election, which
saw four “pro-Gaza” independents snatch seats from the party in
districts with a large Muslim population.“I think Labour have just
become too afraid of their own shadow,” Smith says.Smith believes the
Israeli-Palestinian issue is disproportionately raised by MPs in the UK
parliament and says “it seems to be all some Labour MPs want to talk
about.”The focus, he says, is “ideological.”“It’s not just the
parliamentary time that’s spent on it,” he says. “It’s the narrative
that ministers themselves are having to push out in order to satisfy
that appetite from their own backbenches.”Smith worries that some of
that parliamentary focus and narrative around Israel has a negative
impact beyond the corridors of Westminster, impacting the media and
wider public perceptions with “knock-on effects” in terms of
antisemitism “on our own shores.”While headlines are made by “appalling
incidents” such as the Yom Kippur terror attack on the Heaton Park
synagogue and last month’s arson attack on four ambulances belonging to a
Jewish-run volunteer organization in north London, Smith believes it’s
important to recognize the pervasive sense of insecurity affecting the
Jewish community. He was appalled, for instance, to attend a Hanukkah
event in his constituency in December 2024 and hear the local rabbi
remark that “we no longer feel safe to meet as a community.”“How on
earth have we got to that point as a country where Jewish people don’t
feel safe to congregate?” Smith asks.Emails from Jewish constituents are
“some of the most heartbreaking emails I’ve ever received as a member
of parliament,” he says. “A Jewish lady [who] was marrying a Christian
guy wrote to me basically saying she felt the need to completely remove
all symbols of her Jewish faith, all parts of her Jewish identity in
order to keep her future husband safe.”Smith admits there is no “magic
bullet” for tackling antisemitism.“It’s going to take years of hard work
to put right again,” he says, but believes the focus must be on
addressing the “root causes,” especially in parts of society where
antisemitism is tolerated.‘How on earth have we got to that point as a
country where Jewish people don’t feel safe to congregate?’The first
priority, he says, is places of higher education, where he believes
“some of the worst antisemitism” occurs. He is angered by what Jewish
students tell him they have to endure on campuses and by the fact that
“university vice-chancellors don’t seem to even think it’s a
problem.”And Smith is adamant that antisemitism can’t be fully tackled
while misconceptions about Israel are so rife. Late last year, he met
with juniors and seniors at a local school in his constituency. When his
support for the Jewish state was raised, Smith asked his audience
whether any of them had ever visited Israel — none had — and then asked
how they pictured the beach in Tel Aviv.“I told them it is a postcard, a
symbol of the most tolerant, diverse place I have ever been, where
you’ve got Jewish people, Christian people having a few beers or playing
volleyball, a Muslim family, some in full burqas, sitting maybe having
tea or a picnic or equally playing games on the beach, a couple of gay
guys kissing. Nobody bats an eyelid. It’s just normal. It’s open, it’s
tolerant, it’s democratic, it’s freedom-loving,” he says.The problem,
says Smith, is that the idea that this was Israel was “just beyond” his
young audience.“That feeds into this narrative that exists in so many
people that then becomes antisemitism,” he says. “It is so deeply
disturbing and challenging.”Smith admits it’s a difficult time to be a
supporter of Israel in the UK, but doesn’t allow that to deter him.“It
is an important time for those of us who are friends of Israel,
supporters of Israel, to stand up and be counted in what is a very
hostile environment in the United Kingdom and in many Western countries
at the moment,” he says, adding he was a member of CFI long before
becoming an MP in 2019.When the call came inviting him to chair the
organization, Smith knew he couldn’t duck it: “I thought, ‘If I don’t do
this now, that’s just wimping out.’”He admits that there may have been
“a politically easier path” for him. But, he quips, “I’m not known for
taking easy paths.”
FINALLY THE EUROPEAN UNION IS TALKING ABOUT HAVING THEIR OWN ARMY.AND IT MUST HAPPEN.

These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Zephaniah 2:1-15
1 Gather together, yes, gather,O shameless nation,
2
before the decree takes effect[a] -before the day passes away like
chaff—before there comes upon you the burning anger of the Lord, before
there comes upon you the day of the anger of the Lord.
3 Seek the
Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands;[b] seek
righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of
the anger of the Lord.
4 For Gaza shall be deserted, and Ashkelon
shall become a desolation; Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon,
and Ekron shall be uprooted.
5 Woe to you inhabitants of the
seacoast, you nation of the Cherethites! The word of the Lord is against
you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines; and I will destroy you until no
inhabitant is left.
6 And you, O seacoast, shall be pastures, with meadows[c] for shepherds and folds for flocks.
7
The seacoast shall become the possession of the remnant of the house of
Judah, on which they shall graze, and in the houses of Ashkelon they
shall lie down at evening. For the Lord their God will be mindful of
them and restore their fortunes.
8 “I have heard the taunts of Moab
(JORDAN) and the revilings of the Ammonites, how they have taunted my
people and made boasts against their territory.
9 Therefore, as I
live,” declares the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Moab shall become
like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles
and salt pits, and a waste forever. The remnant of my people shall
plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”
10 This shall be their lot in return for their pride, because they taunted and boasted against the people of the Lord of hosts.
11
The Lord will be awesome against them; for he will famish all the gods
of the earth, and to him shall bow down, each in its place, all the
lands of the nations.
12 You also, O Cushites, shall be slain by my sword.
13
And he will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy
Assyria,(SYRIA) and he will make Nineveh a desolation, a dry waste like
the desert.
14 Herds shall lie down in her midst, all kinds of
beasts;[d] even the owl and the hedgehog[e] shall lodge in her
capitals; a voice shall hoot in the window; devastation will be on the
threshold; for her cedar work will be laid bare.
15 This is the
exultant city that lived securely, that said in her heart, “I am, and
there is no one else.” What a desolation she has become, a lair for wild
beasts! Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.Sa'ar: No

DANIEL 2:37-45
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and
the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made
thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after
thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third
kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And
the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh
in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these,
shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the
feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom
shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron,
forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle
themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to
another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of
these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never
be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it
shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand
for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of
the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the
brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
DANIEL 7:17-26
17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.
19
Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from
all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his
nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue
with his feet;
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of
the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn
that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was
more stout than his fellows.
21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
22
Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of
the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
23
Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,
which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole
earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the
ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and
another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first,
and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words
against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High,
and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his
hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

Macron and Tusk meet in Poland to discuss European defence.
Gdansk,
Poland, April 20 (AFP) Apr 20, 2026-French President Emmanuel Macron
and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk are meeting Monday in the north of
Poland to strengthen defence cooperation in the face of Russian threats
and weakening US commitment to Europe. The meeting is the first since
the two countries signed a treaty of friendship and enhanced cooperation
last May."We have very similar views on how to build Europe's strength,
the sovereignty of Poland, of France, and of Europe," Tusk said on the
eve of the visit. As Europe ramps up its defensive capabilities in the
face of Russia's four-year old invasion of Ukraine and US President
Donald Trump's questioning of the Atlantic alliance, the two leaders
will discuss the possibility of a Polish role in France's nuclear
deterrent. While France has specified it would retain full control over
the decision to use force, Polish forces could contribute in areas such
as early warning and air defense, both sides say.- 'European preference'
-Macron's office said the two countries would also enter into a
partnership on a "military communications satellite project," involving
"French, Polish, and other European operators."Another key issue is
"European preference" for military procurement, which Macron has
promoted. That's led to some tension with Eastern European countries,
including Poland, strongly attached to their relationship with the
United States.Poland in recent years has massively invested in
modernizing its armed forces, making it an attractive ally.Poland's
military spending is among the highest in NATO, expected to exceed 4.8
percent of GDP in 2026, far ahead of most countries in Europe. But the
country has placed "colossal orders for American F-35s, Apache attack
helicopters, Patriot missiles, and Abrams tanks," a European diplomat
close to the matter told AFP.Nationalist President Karol Nawrocki, a
rival to Tusk, is opposed to Poland's participation in the EU's SAFE
Security Action For Europe) program, citing a threat to his country's
"independence", even if it would contribute tens of billions of euros to
its defence.- Pro-European fold -Poland is now led once again by a
pro-European government following Tusk's electoral victory in 2023, but
it remains fundamentally attached to its relationship with the United
States. That relationship has been tested by Trump's repeated insults
against Europe and the war he started with Iran."Washington's strategy
has indeed changed" toward Europeans, the Prime Minister told a press
conference. But "Polish-American and Euro-American relations" remain
"very important," he said.Macron and Tusk will also welcome Hungary's
return to the pro-European fold after the electoral defeat of Prime
Minister Viktor Orban, who had cast himself as the leader of the
illiberal and nationalist camp in the EU.Monday's meetings are being
held in Gdansk, a symbol of Europe's upheavals in the 20th century. The
port city, which lies about 150 kilometers from the Russian enclave of
Kaliningrad, was the site of iconic shipyards where the pro-democracy
Solidarnosc (known in English as Solidarity) movement was born, that
eventually resulted in the end of Soviet rule.Macron began his trip with
a visit to a nearby French military cemetery, following in the
footsteps of previous visiting French presidents.
Op-ed-Destruction
of Jesus statue should serve as moral wake-up call for IDF,
Israel-Israel boasts about being safe for Christians and other
minorities, yet is unwilling to crack down on soldiers and civilians
whose actions are taking a hammer to ties with Christians By Lazar
Berman-Today, 5:10 pm-APR 20,26
On Sunday, an image of an Israeli
soldier operating in Lebanon spread rapidly across social media. It so
perfectly encapsulated some of the worst tropes about Israel and Jews
that many instinctively assumed it was an AI-generated product meant to
slander the Jewish state.Friends of Israel who thought the photograph
might be real prayed it wasn’t, so damaging was the picture.Their
prayers went unanswered. An IDF soldier had indeed taken a hammer to the
face of a statue depicting Jesus in the Christian town of Debel in
southern Lebanon. There was no AI, no manipulation, no getting around an
image that points to a deep moral morass in the IDF and in broader
Israeli society. It is hard to think of an image that could be more
damaging to Israel on the world stage right now.The emergent “woke
right” in the US — led by figures like Tucker Carlson — contends that
Jews are enemies of Christians, who are persecuted by Israelis in the
Holy Land. Carlson has devoted multiple episodes of his popular podcast
to speaking with local Christian figures about hardships imposed by
Jerusalem. The movement is working hard to convince Christian Zionists,
the backbone of America’s support for Israel, that Israelis harbor a
not-so-secret disdain for Christians, and that their natural allies are
the Palestinians.Meanwhile, on the other side of the political spectrum,
Israel is cast as a uniquely cruel fighting force, going out of its way
to destroy homes, lives and religious sites. All of this is done with a
bizarre glee by IDF forces, say anti-Israel social media figures. And,
of course, there is the millennia-old charge of deicide, that Jews
collectively bear eternal guilt for the death of Jesus on the cross.
That accusation, which has led to the death of untold thousands of Jews,
has been adapted in Palestinian liberation theology, which recasts
Israeli soldiers as the Romans and Palestinians as their victim,
Jesus. What better evidence could all those camps ask for than a photo of
a broken figure of Jesus, torn off the cross and hanging upside down as
an emotionless Israeli soldier smashes him with a hammer? The same army
that killed tens of thousands in Gaza, and struck the only Catholic
church in the territory, those critics can now say, is going out of its
way to desecrate images of Jesus as it systematically destroys southern
Lebanon as well.As Jerusalem and Beirut wade into unprecedented peace
talks, Israel has gone to great lengths to insist that its fight is with
Hezbollah and its Shiite strongholds, not the Maronite communities in
southern Lebanon that have worked with Israel since before its
independence. But the image of the soldier destroying infrastructure in a
Christian town, and a statue of Jesus at that, would seem to directly
contradict the contention that Israel is not targeting Christians as
well. Most Israelis are rightly horrified by the incident, and the IDF
and Foreign Ministry have denounced it in unequivocal terms. “Yesterday,
like the overwhelming majority of Israelis,” said Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu, “I was stunned and saddened to learn that an IDF
soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon.”Not an
isolated incidentAlthough it is authentic, the image is not
representative of the conduct of Israel’s soldiers, many Israelis have
noted in the last few hours. Every large organization has a few bad
apples, they point out.But Israel and its leaders can’t be let off the
hook by dismissing it as an isolated incident, involving a single
soldier.First of all, the soldier desecrating the statue is not the only
guilty party. Another reservist took the picture, and soldiers don’t
wander around southern Lebanon in pairs or drive around in lone
vehicles. There were likely over 10 soldiers — and very likely an
officer — who witnessed some part of the act and did not stop
it.Moreover, the soldier with the hammer thought it was a good idea to
put the evidence of his crime online, with no fear of the potential
personal and national consequences for his act.He is far from the first
IDF soldier to upload damning images, and even evidence of war crimes.
Since the war that began with the October 7, 2023, Hamas invasion of
southern Israel, Israeli soldiers have been posting videos and photos to
Instagram and TikTok that have gone viral both in anti-Israel circles
and in mainstream media, with some being used for evidence in
international cases against Israelis.Soldiers have put photos online
showing them throwing Qurans into fires, burning books, abusing
prisoners of war and more.Even more damningly, Sunday’s incident wasn’t
the first time Israeli troops shocked Christians around the world with
behavior they put online. In 2024, elite troops operating in Lebanon
filmed a mock wedding ceremony inside an Orthodox church, entirely
oblivious to the sanctity of the site. Naturally, they uploaded footage
to social media, essentially handing it to news organizations around the
world.Deir Mimas, South Lebanon | church Advertisement Israeli soldiers

November 25, 2024-The trend is indicative of a fundamental problem
within the IDF. Despite incalculable damage to the legitimacy of
Israel’s military operations — a key factor that determines what Israel
is able to accomplish on the battlefield — the IDF has not put an end to
the phenomenon of soldiers taking phones onto the battlefield to
document themselves defying IDF regulations and international law, and
then uploading that content to the internet. The army recognizes at least
some aspects of the problems, but has only addressed the symptoms.Amid
efforts by pro-Palestinian organizations to get Israeli soldiers
traveling abroad arrested and prosecuted for war crimes, the army has
issued guidelines requiring that the identities of all troops who
participate in combat be concealed.Interviews with officers under the
rank of brigadier general are now aired with their faces blurred or from
the back, and with their full names hidden.Of course, that doesn’t do
much when soldiers put their own videos online, nor does it address the
moral and disciplinary issues at play.To the lions-The soldier didn’t
smash the Jesus statue accidentally, and his actions didn’t take place
in a vacuum.Without knowing exactly what motivated his act, it’s
reasonable to think it was done with forethought and intention.
Somewhere in his education or his social milieu, he likely learned that
Christian shrines and icons are not to be respected, or even that they
are to be destroyed.Though the vast majority of Israel doesn’t support
persecuting religious minorities in general or Christians in particular,
there are enough extremists and religious fanatics in the country who
do support such actions that the soldier has plenty of potential sources
of inspiration for his crime.Christians in Israel say they are
increasingly coming under assault, including a series of incidents in
recent years in which mostly young Orthodox Jews made a habit of
spitting on the ground in front of clergy and other Christians, mainly
in Jerusalem’s Old City, an act that may be prosecuted in Israel as a
hate crime. There were also acts of vandalism against churches and
cemeteries, and physical assaults, including actions that bear the
hallmark of extremist Jewish settler violence familiar to the West
Bank. The publication of the picture comes as Israel finds itself in
repeated and avoidable fiascos around its relationship with
Christians. On Palm Sunday last month, Latin Patriarch Pierbattista
Pizzaballa, the top Catholic official in the Holy Land, and other senior
clergy were prevented by Israeli police from worshipping in the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre because of wartime safety guidelines. The incident
became an international scandal that demanded Netanyahu’s speedy
intervention.US Ambassador Mike Huckabee had to threaten Israel to get
the Shas-run Interior Ministry to give visas to Christian clergy; the
ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party submitted a symbolic bill in
2023 that would make proselytization punishable by jail time; a tax
fight between the Jerusalem Municipality and major churches in Jerusalem
led to them closing the Holy Sepulchre in protest. In all the cases,
Netanyahu had to get involved after damage was done internationally in
order to find a solution, evidence that Israel does not recognize the
importance of its ties with Christians and does not prioritize the
issue. That was painfully evident in July of last year, when an Israeli
tank shell hit Gaza’s only Catholic church, killing three people. Father
Gabriel Romanelli, the church’s priest whom former pope Francis used to
speak to daily, was injured in the attack. It is hard to imagine the
Israeli army intentionally targeting the church.Yet that does not mean
Israeli leaders and commanders deserve a pass. If the military decides
it must avoid hitting something at all costs, it has plenty of tools to
ensure that troops do not fire in that direction. The IDF had been very
careful about avoiding any strikes that had even a small chance of
hitting areas where Israeli hostages might have been.If it recognized
the sensitivity of the church, the fact that hundreds of civilians
shelter there, and the resonance of the site for Christians around the
world, the IDF would have ordered troops to avoid firing anywhere near
the site.A new IDF standard?“Israel is the only country in the region
that the Christian population and standard of living is growing,” read
an awkwardly phrased English-language statement from Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu on X Monday condemning the destruction of the statue
of Jesus. “Israel is the only place in the Middle East that adheres to
freedom of worship for all.”That may be. But it’s also a country that
has not stopped Jewish teens from regularly attacking Palestinian
civilians in the West Bank, nor has it taken meaningful action to stop
IDF soldiers from violating laws in Gaza and Lebanon and filming
them.Israel is also a country in which soldiers and civilians, let’s
face it, desecrate Christian sites. There are certainly no orders to do
so, it violates Israeli law and IDF orders, and disciplinary action is
taken. But that doesn’t change the fact that it happens in the IDF, as
it does in ISIS, Salafi groups and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. The
militaries of Israel’s emphatically authoritarian neighbors Egypt and
Jordan don’t attack statues of Jesus or disrespect churches. And it’s not
that the IDF and the security services don’t know how to drop the
hammer on relatively minor violations of its orders.Last week, four
Border Police officers were sentenced to two weeks in military prison
for “harming religion and Judaism” by barbecuing on base during
Shabbat. The same week, the IDF court-martialed three female soldiers and
docked a third of their salaries for wearing purportedly revealing
clothes to base as they were being discharged. The military said that
incident “constitutes a departure from orders and was therefore handled
by the deputy commander of the unit in accordance with the IDF’s
disciplinary code of conduct.”If Israel’s military is treating all
violations of its regulations seriously, then we can expect to see a
long jail sentence for the reservist who desecrated the statue,
certainly more time than the Border Police officers received for
grilling on Shabbat. But if the reservist gets minimal jail time for
destroying a cherished religious object while others are punished
severely for violating Jewish religious sensibilities, then Sunday’s
incident in Lebanon shouldn’t be seen as a crime by a soldier, but as
further evidence that Israel is sliding away from tolerance and
democratic values and toward religious and political extremism.
