1 Gather together, yes, gather,O shameless nation,
2
before the decree takes effect[a] -before the day passes away like
chaff—before there comes upon you the burning anger of the Lord, before
there comes upon you the day of the anger of the Lord.
3 Seek the
Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands;[b] seek
righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of
the anger of the Lord.
4 For Gaza shall be deserted, and Ashkelon
shall become a desolation; Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon,
and Ekron shall be uprooted.
5 Woe to you inhabitants of the
seacoast, you nation of the Cherethites! The word of the Lord is against
you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines; and I will destroy you until no
inhabitant is left.
6 And you, O seacoast, shall be pastures, with meadows[c] for shepherds and folds for flocks.
7
The seacoast shall become the possession of the remnant of the house of
Judah, on which they shall graze, and in the houses of Ashkelon they
shall lie down at evening. For the Lord their God will be mindful of
them and restore their fortunes.
8 “I have heard the taunts of Moab
(JORDAN) and the revilings of the Ammonites, how they have taunted my
people and made boasts against their territory.
9 Therefore, as I
live,” declares the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Moab shall become
like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles
and salt pits, and a waste forever. The remnant of my people shall
plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”
10 This shall be their lot in return for their pride, because they taunted and boasted against the people of the Lord of hosts.
11
The Lord will be awesome against them; for he will famish all the gods
of the earth, and to him shall bow down, each in its place, all the
lands of the nations.
12 You also, O Cushites, shall be slain by my sword.
13
And he will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy
Assyria,(SYRIA) and he will make Nineveh a desolation, a dry waste like
the desert.
14 Herds shall lie down in her midst, all kinds of
beasts;[d] even the owl and the hedgehog[e] shall lodge in her
capitals; a voice shall hoot in the window; devastation will be on the
threshold; for her cedar work will be laid bare.
15 This is the
exultant city that lived securely, that said in her heart, “I am, and
there is no one else.” What a desolation she has become, a lair for wild

DANIEL 2:37-45
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and
the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made
thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after
thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third
kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And
the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh
in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these,
shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the
feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom
shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron,
forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle
themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to
another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of
these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never
be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it
shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand
for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of
the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the
brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
DANIEL 7:17-26
17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.
19
Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from
all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his
nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue
with his feet;
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of
the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn
that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was
more stout than his fellows.
21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
22
Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of
the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
23
Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,
which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole
earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the
ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and
another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first,
and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words
against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High,
and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his
hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

Tiny tech, big AI power: what are 2-nanometre chips?
Tokyo,
Dec 31 (AFP) Dec 31, 2025-Taiwan's world-leading microchip manufacturer
TSMC says it has started mass producing next-generation "2-nanometre"
chips.AFP looks at what that means, and why it's important:- What can
they do? -The computing power of chips has increased dramatically over
the decades as makers cram them with more microscopic electronic
components. That has brought huge technological leaps to everything from
smartphones to cars, as well as the advent of artificial intelligence
tools like ChatGPT.Advanced 2-nanometre (2nm) chips perform better and
are more energy-efficient than past types, and are structured
differently to house even more of the key components known as
transistors. The new chip technology will help speed up laptops, reduce
data centres' carbon footprint and allow self-driving cars to spot
objects quicker, according to US computing giant IBM.For artificial
intelligence, "this benefits both consumer devices -- enabling faster,
more capable on-device AI -- and data centre AI chips, which can run
large models more efficiently", said Jan Frederik Slijkerman, senior
sector strategist at Dutch bank ING.- Who makes them? -Producing 2nm
chips, the most cutting-edge in the industry, is "extremely hard and
expensive", requiring "advanced lithography machines, deep knowledge of
the production process, and huge investments", Slijkerman told AFP.Only a
few companies are able to do it: TSMC, which dominates the chip
manufacturing industry, as well as South Korea's Samsung and US firm
Intel.TSMC is in the lead, with the other two "still in the stage of
improving yield" and lacking large-scale customers, said TrendForce
analyst Joanne Chiao.Japanese chipmaker Rapidus is also building a plant
in northern Japan to make 2nm chips, with mass production slated for
2027.- What's the political impact? -TSMC's path to mass 2nm production
has not always been smooth.Taiwanese prosecutors charged three people in
August with stealing trade secrets related to 2nm chips to help Tokyo
Electron, a Japanese company that makes equipment for TSMC."This case
involves critical national core technologies vital to Taiwan's
industrial lifeline," the high prosecutors' office said at the
time.Geopolitical factors and trade wars are also at play.Nikkei Asia
reported this summer that TSMC, which counts Nvidia and Apple among its
clients, will not use Chinese chipmaking equipment in its 2nm production
lines to avoid disruption from potential US restrictions.TSMC says they
plan to speed up production of 2nm chips in the United States,
currently targeted for "the end of the decade".- How small is two
nanometres? -Extremely tiny -- for reference, an atom is approximately
0.1 nanometres across. But in fact 2nm does not refer to the actual size
of the chip itself, or any chip components, and is just a marketing
term.Instead "the smaller the number, the higher the density" of these
components, Chiao told AFP.IBM says 2nm designs can fit up to 50 billion
transistors, tiny components smaller than a virus, on a chip the size
of a fingernail. To create the transistors, slices of silicon are etched,
treated and combined with thin films of other materials.A higher
density of transistors results in a smaller chip or one the same size
with faster processing power.- Can chips get even better? -Yes, and TSMC
is already developing "1.4-nanometre" technology, reportedly to go into
mass production around 2028, with Samsung and Intel not far behind.TSMC
started high-volume 3nm production in 2023, and Taiwanese media says
the company is already building a 1.4nm chip factory in the city of
Taichung. As for 2nm chips, Japan's Rapidus says they are "ideal for AI
servers" and will "become the cornerstone of the next-generation digital
infrastructure", despite the huge technical challenges and costs
involved.
Iran says launches three satellites into space from Russia.
Tehran,
Dec 28 (AFP) Dec 28, 2025-Iran launched three domestically built
observation satellites into space from Russia on Sunday, state
television reported, marking a new step for Tehran's space programme
despite Western sanctions. The country maintains that its aerospace
industry is peaceful and complies with UN Security Council resolutions
imposed over its nuclear programme."Three Iranian satellites, Zafar-2,
Paya and Kowsar 1.5, were launched into space by a Soyuz rocket from the
Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia," Iranian television reported. The
satellites were to be used for "observation" and were designed by "the
private sector", the official IRNA news agency said.Paya is Iran's most
advanced domestically produced imaging satellite, using artificial
intelligence to improve image resolution, IRNA said.It said the
satellite would focus on water resource management, environmental
monitoring and mapping. The Russian Soyuz launcher was chosen because it
is one of the most reliable in the world for transporting sensitive
satellites, according to the Fars news agency.Iran has carried out 10
satellite launches in the last two years, including one in July from the
same launch site in Russia.Western countries fear that these satellite
launch systems incorporate technologies interchangeable with those used
in ballistic missiles, potentially capable of carrying a nuclear
warhead.Tehran denies those accusations and refutes that it is trying to
acquire nuclear weapons.
New magnetic cloak design aims to protect sensitive electronics by Sophie Jenkins.
London,
UK (SPX) Dec 19, 2025-University of Leicester engineers have outlined a
design concept for a device that can shield sensitive components from
external magnetic fields by making them effectively invisible to
magnetic detection.A magnetic cloak redirects magnetic field lines so
that they flow around an object and behave as if the object is not
present. In work reported in Science Advances, the team shows that
practical cloaks can be engineered using combinations of superconductors
and soft ferromagnetic materials in forms that can be manufactured. The
study moves the concept beyond idealized designs toward devices that
could operate in real environments. The researchers used computational
and theoretical methods, including advanced mathematical modelling and
high-performance simulations based on real material parameters, to
create a physics-informed framework for designing magnetic cloaks for
objects of arbitrary shape. Previous approaches largely focused on
simple geometries such as cylinders, but the new framework accommodates
irregular forms more typical of real components. The designs are
intended to maintain cloaking performance over a broad range of magnetic
field strengths and frequencies.Magnetic interference can disrupt
precision instruments, sensors, and electronic components, causing
signal distortion, data errors, or equipment failures. Such issues are
increasingly important in settings like hospitals, power networks,
aerospace systems, and scientific laboratories, where highly sensitive
technologies operate in complex electromagnetic environments. The
proposed cloaks and related magnetic guides are meant to be tailored to
specific devices using materials that are already commercially
available.Potential uses include shielding parts of fusion reactors from
stray magnetic fields, protecting medical imaging equipment such as MRI
systems, and isolating quantum sensors used in navigation or
communications. By shaping the local magnetic environment around these
devices, the cloaks could help preserve measurement accuracy and
operational stability.Dr Harold Ruiz of the University of Leicester
School of Engineering said: "Magnetic cloaking is no longer a futuristic
concept tied to perfect analytical conditions. This study shows that
practical, manufacturable cloaks for complex geometries are within
reach, enabling next-generation shielding solutions for science,
medicine, and industry." He added: "Our next step is the fabrication and
experimental testing of these magnetic cloaks using high-temperature
superconducting tapes and soft magnetic composites. We are already
planning follow-up studies and collaborations to bring these designs
into real-world settings."

Minnesota
fraud investigation sparks backlash and daycare scrutiny in
Washington-by Michelle Esteban,KOMONewsReporterMon, December 29, 2025 at

SEATTLE (KOMO)
— The federal government has intensified its operations in Minnesota
following new allegations of fraud, particularly targeting daycare
centers reportedly run by the Somali community.LATEST: Washington
officials seek clarity on daycare fund usage amid national fraud
investigationThe escalation has resulted in both an increased scrutiny
of day cares and a rising backlash to Somalis in Washington
state.Homeland Security released a video showing agents going "door to
door" at suspected fraud sites. This escalation comes after a viral
video surfaced, allegedly depicting empty daycare centers receiving
millions in taxpayer dollars.FBI Director Kash Patel has pledged
additional resources for the investigation, and lawmakers in the House
are expanding their own probe.Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota) expressed
astonishment at the situation."It’s amazing to me that a 23-year-old
journalist, a YouTuber who's now got over 80 million views on this
thing, found more in a matter of hours than our Tim Walz and Keith
Ellison, our Attorney General, have found in 7 years," Emmer said. The
allegations add to a growing list of fraud investigations in Minnesota,
with 92 people charged and 60 convictions so far. Of those charged, FBI
said 82 are Somali-Americans.Washington is home to one of the country's
larger Somali-American populations, with local Somali leaders estimating
the number at 20,000.We found 283 childcare centers in our state that
list Somali as their primary language. We asked the FBI in Seattle if
it's investigating similar fraud allegations at day cares in Washington
state. In an email response, the FBI said it does not confirm or deny any
specific investigations in Washington state, as a matter of agency
policy. We also questioned the Washington State Department of Children,
Youth and Families (DCYF) . The agency licenses and regulates daycare
centers. We requested an interview to discuss the Minnesota childcare
fraud allegations.DCYF sent a statement in an email response that reads
in part:"Licensed early learning providers follow quality standards, the
Washington Administrative Code (WAC), set by the state to ensure
children in licensed care are in safe, healthy, and nurturing

them to send receipts and documentation to DCYF upon request. The agency
said if it determines that a provider is unable to submit receipts for

meeting with the Governor, attributed the backlash to political rhetoric
and fraud investigations in Minnesota."Those are isolated incidents,"
said Jama. "And that's across the board in any community when those
things happen in terms of fraud, it is being elevated just because of
the rhetoric from the President and this administration."During a

to his office following reports of Somali child care providers in
Washington being harassed and accused of fraud. These reports occur as
the federal government is investigating alleged billions in fraud in the
provision of social services in Minnesota; most of the people who have
been charged in that investigation are Somali American. The situation
has gotten attention from President Donald Trump, who has made
derogatory remarks about Somalis, rattling the Seattle-area Somali

media have focused on Washington as another place where they say there
are a large number of child care centers connected to the Somali
community.“Showing up on someone’s porch, threatening, or harassing them
isn’t an investigation,” Brown said. “Neither is filming minors who may

National-Trump
administration says it's freezing child care funds to MinnesotaUpdated

President
Trump's administration announced on Tuesday that it is freezing child
care funds to Minnesota and demanding an audit of fraud schemes
involving government programs.Women walk down a street in the

of Health and Human Services Jim O'Neill said on the social platform X
that the move is in response to "blatant fraud that appears to be
rampant in Minnesota and across the country."Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz
pushed back on X, saying fraudsters are a serious issue that the state
has spent years cracking down on but that this move is part of "Trump's
long game.""He's politicizing the issue to defund programs that help
Minnesotans," Walz said.Conservative influencer Nick Shirley films

right-wing influencer who posted a video Friday claiming he found that
day care centers operated by Somali residents in Minneapolis had
committed up to $100 million in fraud. O'Neill said he has demanded Walz
submit an audit of these centers that includes attendance records,
licenses, complaints, investigations and inspections."We have turned off
the money spigot and we are finding the fraud," O'Neill said. The
announcement comes one day after U.S. Homeland Security officials were
in Minneapolis conducting a fraud investigation by going to unidentified
businesses and questioning workers. There have been years of
investigations that included a $300 million pandemic food fraud scheme
revolving around the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, for which 57
defendants in Minnesota have been convicted. Prosecutors said the
organization was at the center of the country's largest COVID-19-related
fraud scam, when defendants exploited a state-run, federally funded
program meant to provide food for children.A federal prosecutor alleged
earlier this month that half or more of the roughly $18 billion in
federal funds that supported 14 programs in Minnesota since 2018 may
have been stolen. Most of the defendants in the child nutrition, housing
services and autism program schemes are Somali Americans, according to
the U.S. Attorney's Office for Minnesota. The Care Can't Wait coalition
has advocated for federal support for family caregivers, including
advocating for the Build Back Better bill in 2021.What It Takes-Policy
relief for family caregivers seems stalled out. But there are signs of
change-O'Neill, who is serving as acting director of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, also said in the social media post
Tuesday that payments across the U.S. through the Administration for
Children and Families, an agency within the U.S. Health and Human
Services Department, will now require "justification and a receipt or
photo evidence" before money is sent. They have also launched a
fraud-reporting hotline and email address. The Administration for
Children and Families provides $185 million in child care funds annually
to Minnesota, according to Assistant Secretary Alex Adams."That money
should be helping 19,000 American children, including toddlers and
infants," he said in a video posted on X. "Any dollar stolen by
fraudsters is stolen from those children."Adams said he spoke Monday
with the director of Minnesota's child care services office and she
wasn't able to say "with confidence whether those allegations of fraud
are isolated or whether there's fraud stretching statewide."Trump has
criticized Walz's administration over the fraud cases, capitalizing on
them to target the Somalia diaspora in the state, which has the largest
Somali population in the U.S.

AI,
fraud and market timing drive biometrics consolidation in 2025 … and
maybe 2026-Goode Intelligence, Liminal analysts say convergence is still
happening-Dec 26, 2025, 2:27 pm EST | Chris Burt
Biometric
Update reported on nearly 50 acquisitions in total during calendar 2025,
about 10 more than in 2024, which had a handful more than 2023.There
was “a significant amount of consolidation” among digital identity
technology suppliers in the assessment of Goode Intelligence CEO and
Chief Analyst Alan Goode. He told Biometric Update in an interview that
technology providers in current identity verification stacks are under
pressure to remake their offerings for the inflection point that
verifiable credentials are about to create, in one of several market
conditions encouraging deal-making.The crop of consolidations deals
ranged from Incode’s acquisition of AuthenticID, largely to add document
verification capabilities to its digital identity platform, to DNP
adding Laxton’s international market reach and experience to its
identity management core and AI parking lot operator Metropolis bringing
Oosto’s facial recognition in-house.Liminal CIO Filip Verley tells
Biometric Update he sees the market as likely to remain active in the
first half of 2026, due to the same forces that shaped the past
year.Fraud has overwhelmed organizations of all kinds, and Verley
emphasizes the degree to which this has pulled enterprise teams and
market players in adjacent areas together.AI has contributed to this
wave of fraud in several important ways. The barrier to entry has been
lowered, and forgeries are now scalable in a way cybercriminals could
only have dreamed of just a few years ago. The proliferation of
generative AI tools has also changed the state of the art in biometric
liveness detection, with injection attack detection (IAD) now table
stakes for secure remote user onboarding the way presentation attack
detection (PAD) has been for the last several years. And even then, more
signals are needed to have a significant impact on mountainous fraud
rates. These intertwined developments are occurring right at the same
time as many market players have reached natural decision-making
junctures.Interest rates are up, identity technology providers have
tested their products in the new AI threat environment and investors are
increasingly looking to cash out.Goode’s analysis of industry
consolidation at the end of last year highlighted the role of digital
identity and biometrics in digital transformation, such as in the
aviation industry.IN Groupe’s acquisition of Idemia Smart Identity had
already been announced, as had LexisNexis Risk Solutions’ deal for
IDVerse. But 2025 had plenty of consolidation and acquisition activity
in store for biometrics and digital ID.Cycles align-Corporate strategy
tends to work in two to three year cycles, Goode points out.During that
process, biometrics and digital identity providers that enter the
M&A market do so based on “what the product is going to be like in
three years time,” he says. “It’s quite a significant amount of
investment time, considering the whole process of understanding what
that product is, then who the match is, and the kind of companies that
can boost or add to that particular product, with an eye on what they
believe the future will entail.”The funding boom that accompanied the
historically low interest rates and unique market pressures of the COVID
pandemic allowed businesses to pursue the capabilities they would need
to fight for market share, whether by investing in research and
development to build it or buying it. Each did so based on its answer
to: “What does digital identity look like in three years time?”The
timing lines up with the expectations of investors who raced into the
space during the pandemic, Verley notes.“Guess what? Most investors are
looking for a return in three, four, five years.”A lot of money was
invested during the low-interest period, when rapid digitization created
growth curves shaped like hockey sticks. But the curve has plateaued
somewhat, Verley says, putting pressure on the massive valuations of the
pandemic era. Those anxious for a return on their investments may be
especially motivated to act if the tech market sours in other areas, as
well, Goode warns. At the same time, he says, “the move from documents
and card to digital assets and digital credentials is shaking this
market up.”At the beginning of the identity lifecycle, the traditional
security printers are looking at ways to extend their role in the
ecosystem, Goode says. They have been looking at acquisition as a way to
build capabilities that, even if they are “not necessarily full stack,”
provide an element to “get them over the line for an individual
tender.”That shift is also seen in areas like travel where digital and
physical credentials are coming together as the aviation industry looks
for ways to automate processes.Overwhelming fraud-Fraud was “the number
one topic in 2025” for businesses and public sector organizations,
Verley says, driving a convergence within them. “Cybersecurity is now
very interested in identity, identity is very interested in fraud, fraud
is interested in identity and cybersecurity,” he says.In some cases,
each of these teams has already purchased solutions, so the ability to
coordinate signals between them is increasingly important.Verley noticed
at a recent ACAMS (Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering
Specialists) event that every compliance company also billed itself as a
fraud prevention provider.“That is the number one pain point for
buyers” across industries, according to Verley.AI has made fakes too
good and too easy to make, whether for biometrics or ID document spoofs.
This is buoying injection attack detection (IAD), Goode notes, but
relying parties are still having trouble on both the fraud prevention
and customer friction sides of the ledger, Verley says.Goode noted in
last year’s wrap-up that the process of migrating to digital identity
documents is well underway, and this progress is reflected in the timing
of Signicat’s acquisition of Inverid, in one example.Reducing fraud is
part of the motivation behind the EU Digital Identity Wallet, which
launches in the year ahead. By tying digital IDs to government-issued
biometric documents with electronic chips.“That’s going to mean a huge
uptick in onboarding people to issue them these new credentials that are
going to be big in identity verification, and that’s going to be the
best way to do that,” Goode says.At the same time, businesses that had
no choice but to pay for identity services during pandemic now have more
choice, Verley says. So providers are emphasizing fraud protection to
justify the value of their products.Several of the year’s other digital
identity acquisitions could also be characterized as providers with
traction adding fraud-prevention capabilities.“We’re seeing that
consolidation where vendors, the ones that are strong, are now picking
up other vendors, or consolidating these vendors,” Verley says. “Instead
of building, they’re buying. And they’re buying technology that can
solve that next use case that it right next to” the one they’ve already
solved.Ping Identity’s acquisition of Keyless is an example of this kind
of transaction, adding attractive privacy protection capabilities to a
successful platform.AI for everything-This is a much more compelling
pitch, he points out, in the age of AI.The threat landscape has changed
just as AI agents join the ecosystem, and practically every business
attempts to find ways to put them to work. From 2023 to last quarter, use
of AI in press releases and fundraising materials accelerated from 152
mentions in Q4 2023 to 2,571 in Q3 2025, according to Liminal stats.With
the ease of AI-powered fakes and the volume of real data available to
criminals, IAD is becoming table stakes, and Goode points to it as
another potential area for consolidation, as identity verification,
deepfake detection and IAD “become more tightly integrated.Businesses
want to combines these capabilities with systems that can pull together
and interpret data from additional sources, Verley suggests, putting
further pressure on market players to consolidate their strengths.“You
can’t just rely on your document scanning or your selfie,” he says.
“You’ve got to figure out what are some of these probabilistic signals
around it, behavioral intelligence, device intelligence, all of these
signals that build a complete picture.”Uncertainty is a central feature
of the AI market landscape, and Goode notes the possibility that if
predictions of the AI market popping like a bubble in 2026 come true,
restricted credit availability “could put a damper on acquisitions.”But
one use case for AI, a deluge of market reports show, is here to
stay.“More than 90 percent of buyers are aware of gen AI, deepfakes and
synthetic fraud, only about 20 percent feel ready to tackle it,” Verley
says. “It is the biggest awareness to preparedness gap we’ve ever
measured over the five years we’ve been running the surveys. You’re not
alone knowing it’s a problem, and you’re not alone not knowing how to
fully solve it.”In some market areas, like border control, “the majority
of the market is still document based, and will remain so for a
significant amount of time,” Goode says, which means the transition to
digital credentials will continue to heavily influence market
consolidation for the next couple of years.“We’re seeing a lot of merger
and acquisition deals across cyber and fraud that are happening in this
space,” Verley says. “And I’m assuming we’re going to see a ton more,
maybe in Q1, Q2; I think we’re going to see a lot of activity.”
2025
saw the quiet consolidation of America’s biometric border-What appeared
incremental in isolation resolved into a system that now spans borders,
agencies, and time-Dec 30, 2025, 12:33 pm EST | Anthony Kimery
By
the end of 2025, it was no longer credible to describe the U.S.
government’s use of biometrics in immigration enforcement as fragmented,
experimental, or limited to border checkpoints.Over the course of the
year, a steady accumulation of procurement records, privacy filings,
rulemakings, and operational disclosures revealed something far more
durable. It unmasked a layered, interoperable surveillance architecture
in which identity itself has become a persistent enforcement
surface. What distinguished 2025 was not a single explosive revelation,
but the way previously discrete systems, often discussed in isolation,
began to resolve into a coherent whole.Facial recognition databases,
mobile biometric collection tools, and backend case-management platforms
were not merely expanding in parallel; they were converging. And
together, they showed how the federal government has been methodically
pushing biometric enforcement outward in space and forward in time,
embedding identity surveillance into routine administrative processes
while oversight mechanisms lagged behind. No technology better captured
this shift than Clearview AI. Once treated as a scandal-driven outlier –
a private company scraping billions of images from the open Internet –
Clearview’s true significance in 2025 lay in how unremarkable its
underlying model had become. The controversy surrounding Clearview no
longer centered on whether law enforcement should use facial recognition
at all, but on which vendor or system would supply it.The premise that a
person’s face could be captured anywhere, matched against vast image
repositories, and used to generate investigative leads without notice or
consent had largely been accepted.Even where Clearview itself was
absent, its logic persisted. Federal and state systems increasingly
mirrored the same assumptions: large-scale image aggregation,
probabilistic matching, opaque accuracy metrics, and limited avenues for
challenge once a match had been made. What Clearview normalized was not
simply facial recognition, but a governing idea that identity could be
inferred and acted upon without any prior relationship between the
individual and the state.By the end of the year, the Clearview story had
ceased to be about a single company and instead marked the maturation
of mass facial recognition as infrastructure rather than exception. If
Clearview illustrated normalization at the database level, Mobile
Fortify showed how that normalization reaches the street.Throughout
2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) quietly expanded its use
of Customs and Border Protection’s Mobile Fortify application under an
oversight framework that barely registered the scope of what was being
authorized.A joint ICE–CBP privacy threshold analysis did not dispute
that agents were capturing facial images, fingerprints, and associated
metadata in the field. Instead, it argued that existing Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) privacy documentation elsewhere in the
bureaucracy was sufficient to cover the practice. That procedural move
proved decisive. By framing Mobile Fortify as an extension of existing
systems rather than a new capability, DHS avoided the triggers that
would normally require a full Privacy Impact Assessment or a public
System of Records Notice. In doing so, the department effectively
treated real-time biometric collection on personal mobile devices as an
incremental change, not a qualitative shift.Operationally, Mobile
Fortify collapsed the distance between encounter and database. Identity
capture, biometric matching, and enforcement decision-making could now
occur almost instantaneously, often during brief, unplanned interactions
where individuals had little understanding of what data was being taken
or how it would be used. The significance of Mobile Fortify was not
merely that it enabled field biometrics, but that it demonstrated how
mobility itself has become a regulatory blind spot. Oversight regimes
built around static systems and centralized processing struggled to
respond to tools designed to move faster than the paperwork meant to
govern them.Less visible, but no less consequential, was the growing
role of ImmigrationOS. Marketed as a workflow and case management
platform, ImmigrationOS initially appeared administrative rather than
coercive.Systems that determine how data flows, which alerts are
generated, and how cases are prioritized often exert more influence over
outcomes than the sensors that collect the data in the first
place.ImmigrationOS repeatedly surfaced as a connective hub linking
biometric identifiers, enforcement priorities, location data, and
third-party inputs. It does not need to collect fingerprints or facial
images directly to shape enforcement decisions.By structuring how
biometric matches are surfaced and operationalized – who sees them,
when, and with what recommended action – it effectively governs behavior
at scale. The critical insight from this is enforcement logic is
migrating upstream into software architecture. Decisions once left to
supervisory judgment are increasingly encoded into dashboards, queues,
and automated workflows that few outside the system ever see.Together,
these technologies revealed the emergence of an integrated immigration
biometrics stack.Biometric enrollment now begins earlier, persists
longer, and travels further than at any point in the past. Data
collected during visa applications, asylum processing, airport
screening, or street encounters can reappear years later in unrelated
enforcement contexts.International data-sharing arrangements extend this
reach beyond U.S. borders, embedding American biometric systems within
foreign law enforcement operations while largely escaping domestic
transparency requirements. What stood out in 2025 was how rarely these
expansions were debated as expansions. Each step was justified as
modernization or efficiency. Taken together, they amounted to a
redefinition of immigration enforcement itself, one in which biometric
identity becomes a permanent condition rather than a situational tool.In
such a system, error and bias are no longer isolated risks. A single
flawed match can propagate across agencies and time, magnifying
consequences while diffusing accountability. The through line of the
year though was not technological inevitability, but governance
lag.Oversight mechanisms remained document-driven and siloed even as
systems became integrated and real time.Privacy reviews focused on
whether a system existed, not on how it reshaped power
relationships.Courts encountered biometric evidence downstream, long
after collection and matching decisions had already constrained
outcomes. And Congress received briefings framed in the language of
modernization rather than structural transformation.By the close of
2025, the cumulative effect was unmistakable. The biometric surveillance
state did not arrive through a single law or a single database. It
emerged through accretion, through tools framed as administrative,
through mobile apps authorized by procedural shortcuts, and through
backend systems that quietly encoded enforcement priorities into
software. The unresolved question left by the year’s record is not
whether this architecture exists, but whether democratic institutions
will meaningfully confront it before it hardens beyond recall. At stake
is not simply privacy, but the ability to govern identity itself. Once
biometric systems are fully integrated across borders, agencies, and
time, they become extraordinarily difficult to unwind. The work of 2025
made clear that the window for public reckoning is narrowing. Whether it
closes quietly or under scrutiny remains an open question, but the
architecture is already in place.
Israel expected to soon reopen
Rafah Crossing for exit and entry of Gazans — US official-Move expected
to go ahead after PM returns from US; as 2025 comes to an end, IDF chief
says Israel is determined to disarm Hamas, with 2026 a ‘decisive year’
for nation’s security By Jacob Magid,Stav Levaton-and ToI Staff 1
January 2026, 12:23 am
The Trump administration expects that
Israel will reopen the Rafah Border Crossing in the coming days to both
the entry and exit of Gazans after US President Donald Trump and his
aides raised the issue during their meetings in Florida with Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a US official has told The Times of
Israel. While the crossing was supposed to reopen as part of the October
Gaza ceasefire agreement, Israel has only been willing to comply if the
gate is used exclusively for the exit of Palestinians until the body of
the final hostage, police Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, is returned.Egypt, in
turn, has kept the Rafah crossing closed, arguing that Jerusalem is
trying to dilute the Strip’s population by not letting anyone back
in.Coming under pressure from the Trump administration, Netanyahu raised
the idea of reopening Rafah in both directions before his cabinet last
week. However, he faced pushback from far-right ministers who have
throughout the war called to encourage the migration of Gazans from the
Strip.According to Channel 12 news, Israel plans to move ahead with the
full reopening of Rafah when Netanyahu returns from the US on Friday,
with an Israeli official telling the network that Jerusalem does not
want to be seen as the party that is blocking the implementation of
Trump’s Gaza peace plan. Also Wednesday, IDF chief Eyal Zamir said that
as 2025 came to an end, Israel remains determined to disarm the Hamas
terror group. He described 2026 as a “decisive year” for Israel’s
security.Zamir visited troops in Gaza on Wednesday, days after Israeli
Netanyahu raised the issue of Hamas disarmament in talks with Trump.“The
year 2026 will be a decisive year in shaping the security reality of
the State of Israel. Our determination to disarm Hamas of its weapons is
absolute,” Zamir told troops.“We will not allow the Hamas terrorist
organization to rebuild its capabilities and threaten us,” he
added.Releasing a year-end summary of its operations in 2025 on
Wednesday, the military said that in Gaza, nearly 14,000 terror targets
were hit, including weapons depots and command facilities. Dozens of
senior Hamas commanders were eliminated, among them brigade, battalion
and company-level leaders.Trump and Netanyahu presented a united front
on Monday after the two discussed several issues as part of crucial
talks on moving to the next stage of the fragile Gaza truce plan,
including the disarmament of Hamas.“If they don’t disarm as they agreed
to do, then there will be hell to pay for them,” Trump told reporters
after the two leaders met. “They have to disarm in a fairly short period
of time.”Hamas has repeatedly said it would not surrender its
weapons.Since October 10, a truce in Gaza has largely halted the
fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas, but some White House
officials fear both are slow-walking the second stage of the
ceasefire.Under the second stage, Israel is supposed to gradually
withdraw from its positions in Gaza, while Hamas is supposed to lay down
its weapons. An interim authority is meant to govern the territory, and
an international stabilization force (ISF) is to be deployed. Both sides
have alleged frequent ceasefire violations.More deaths reported in
Gaza-On Wednesday, Hamas’s health ministry said Gaza hospitals had
received the body of one person killed by IDF gunfire over the past 48
hours, as well as two bodies of Gazans killed before that period. The
ministry did not identify the people or specify where or when they were
killed.Palestinian media reported Tuesday that the body of an
11-year-old girl, Dana Muqat, was brought to Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital
after she was shot dead by the IDF on the Hamas-controlled side of the
Gaza ceasefire line in Gaza City’s eastern Tuffah neighborhood. The IDF
has not commented on the reports.Gaza hospitals have also received 10
people wounded by IDF gunfire over the past 48 hours, the Hamas health
ministry said. It did not specify where the people were wounded or the
severity of their injuries. In addition, the ministry said two people,
including a four-year-old girl, had been killed by structural collapse
due to heavy rainfall since noon on Monday. It did not say where or
precisely when they were killed.Palestinian media reported Tuesday that a
young girl, Eilaf Barbakh, was killed and three others wounded after a
wall collapsed on tents housing displaced Palestinians next to a Red
Cross hospital near Rafah.A man was also said to have been killed Monday
afternoon from the collapse of a wall on a tent in Tel al-Hawa, in
southern Gaza City. The man could not immediately be identified. In
total, 19 Gazans have been killed by structural collapse due to heavy
rainfall this winter, the Hamas ministry said.Hamas’s civil defense
agency has warned displaced Palestinian not to shelter from the rain in
buildings damaged by bombing. The UN reported in October that over half
of Gaza’s structures were destroyed in the war between Hamas and Israel,
and that roughly 40% of the remaining structures are severely or
moderately damaged.Hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans face
flooding of their tents and shelters by heavy rains, and aid groups
charge that materials for shelters and sandbags are not being allowed to
enter the enclave.COGAT, the Israeli Defense Ministry body that
oversees aid to Gaza, has denied the allegations, saying it has let in
hundreds of thousands of tents and tarpaulins and is waiting for
international organizations to let in close to 100,000 pallets of
“water-related items.”Wednesday also saw troops operating in northern
Gaza uncover a loaded rocket launcher “ready to fire” toward Israel,
during ongoing efforts to dismantle terror infrastructure in the area,
the army said.According to the military, combat teams from the Gaza
Division’s Northern Brigade located the launcher during a weapons-search
operation in the Beit Hanoun area, near the so-called Yellow Line. The
launcher was found loaded with five rockets.A security source noted that
the launcher was likely an old one and would be destroyed by troops. The
military said forces remain deployed in the area in accordance with the
ceasefire framework and will continue acting to remove any “immediate
threats.”
Blown off course-Trump eagle-minded post tilts at
windmills, crash lands in Israel-President blasts wind farms for
‘killing all of our beautiful Bald Eagles,’ but misses on both the
species and the spot-By AFP Today, 11:17 pm-DEC 31,25
US
President Donald Trump has blamed wind turbines for killing iconic
American bald eagles in a year’s end social media post that hit on one
of his pet peeves. There were two problems with this latest lament: the
picture in his Truth Social post on Tuesday was taken years ago in
Israel, and it’s not a bald eagle.Trump shared a zoomed-in image of a
bird on rocky ground beneath a wind turbine, writing: “Windmills are
killing all of our beautiful Bald Eagles!”The bald eagle is the national
bird of the United States and appears on its seal, currency, stamps and
military insignia. An official White House account and the US Department
of Energy both shared the post on X, amplifying the latest attack on
the wind energy sector from Trump, who has long opposed the
power-generating turbines he claims are unsightly, expensive and
dangerous to wildlife. But the same photo appeared in a 2017 article from
the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, which credited it to the Israel Nature
and Parks Authority and said the bird was a falcon. The agency had
included the image a month prior in a Hebrew-language Facebook post
mentioning vultures.Writing visible on one of the wind turbines in the
photo is in Hebrew. Some of the Republican leader’s critics pounced on
the mix-up, with California Governor Gavin Newsom posting, “Dozy Don
doesn’t know what America’s bird looks like???”Two independent experts
consulted by AFP agreed that the bird of prey in the photo was not a
bald eagle, which lives in North America and is known for its large size
and white head. The animal depicted is smaller and has a different
color and bill structure. The experts said it was more likely a Eurasian
kestrel, a type of falcon, while noting that Eurasian griffon vultures
are also common in Israel.“It is definitely not a Bald Eagle,” said Ben
Sheldon, who studies birds as a professor of ornithology at the
University of Oxford.Hundreds of thousands of birds die each year from
wind turbines in the United States, according to the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, though the university wrote in 2023 that these
fatalities “represent a tiny fraction of the birds killed annually in
other ways, like flying into buildings or caught by prowling house

authority over Areas A and B-Proposed law, seeking to create a civilian
body in charge of antiquities and archaeological sites, has been opposed
by most Israeli archaeologists, likely violates international law-By
Rossella Tercatin-Today, 11:17 pm-DEC 31,25
A new version of a
bill whose purpose is to extend Israeli authority over antiquities and
heritage sites in the West Bank aims to include Areas A and B — where
the Palestinian Authority has civilian control — under the scope of its
applicability, according to the latest draft uploaded to the Knesset
website on Wednesday ahead of a meeting of the Education and Culture
Committee to discuss it.The draft includes dozens of notes highlighting
items that still need to be decided or clarified before the bill is
brought to the committee vote. One of the comments states that the bill’s
primary sponsor, Likud MK Amit Halevi, has requested that the new law
be applied also to the Gaza Strip. The original version of the bill,
first introduced in 2023, proposed that the Israel Antiquities Authority
(IAA), the body responsible for overseeing archaeology and
archaeological sites in Israel’s sovereign territory, oversee
antiquities in the West Bank. From the outset, the proposal has faced
backlash from nearly every professional archaeologist, many of whom
accused the coalition of seeking to approve a de facto annexation in the
field of antiquities. The IAA itself opposed the move, and the bill has
now been rewritten to establish a new Israeli civilian body for this
purpose.Under the Oslo Accords, Israel’s involvement in West Bank
antiquities is only supposed to extend to Area C, the 60% of the West
Bank where it maintains civil and military control, while Area A and B
are under the civilian control of the Palestinian Authority (in the case
of Area A, the PA also maintains control over security affairs).Under
prevailing interpretations of international law, even in Area C, Israel
is permitted only to conduct salvage excavations and operations to
preserve antiquities and archaeological sites, rather than to initiate
academic digs or site development.Currently, the body responsible for
antiquities is the Staff Officer of the Archaeology Unit of the Civil
Administration, a branch of the Defense Ministry’s Coordinator for
Government Affairs in the Territories (COGAT), in charge of civilian
affairs in the region. As for Gaza, at the moment, Israel controls over
53% of the Strip, which is mostly empty of civilians, while it does not
run civilian affairs in the rest of the area. The first clause of the new
version of the bill states that “the purpose of this Law is to
establish the direct responsibility of the State of Israel for the care
of antiquities and heritage and archaeological sites in Judea and
Samaria, and for the enforcement of legislation intended to prevent and
reduce harm to them, including the protection, preservation,
development, and rescue of antiquities and sites, taking into account
the unique aspects applicable to them in Judea and Samaria [the biblical
name of the West Bank].”The second clause, titled “Definitions,”
describes the geographical scope of the law as “the Judea and Samaria
Area” and adds in parentheses that, in accordance with the decision of
the Chair of the Committee at the meeting held on March 18, 2025, at
this stage, the proposed law shall apply to Areas A, B, and C.The notes
attached to the clause explain that, in light of the decision to include
Area A and B, the Justice Ministry and National Security Council have
been requested to submit a position on the matter, and that the bill’s
initiator “seeks to apply the authority under the proposed law also to
the areas of the Gaza Strip.”The committee meeting was scheduled to
present and discuss the new version of the bill, but only the first
clause was introduced as it sparked a prolonged debate. The Justice
Ministry’s representatives warned that the bill could create issues
given the West Bank’s complex legal status and other international
considerations.“The legislation contradicts Israel’s long-standing
policy regarding Judea and Samaria and raises international
sensitivities,” said Aryeh Balaban of the ministry’s Counseling and
Legislation Department.“The legislation may create clashes and
inconsistencies and could end up doing more harm than good,” echoed
Shira Emanuel, another justice ministry official. “All land and
expropriation laws are fundamentally different in Judea and
Samaria.”Also, Prof. Guy Stiebel from Tel Aviv University, who chairs
Israel’s Archaeology Council, which advises the government and public
entities on matters related to antiquities, spoke against the bill,
highlighting the possible consequences for Israeli academics at the
international level and suggesting that the new system is not really
going to help archaeology.Stiebel also highlighted that the government
has already addressed the main issue by increasing the funding for the
Archaeology Unit.“There is no need for the proposed law,” he said. “The
minister has already increased the budget of the Staff Officer for
Archaeology sixfold.”Halevi and Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu (Otzma
Yehudit), by contrast, stressed that the budget must be enshrined in
law and not subject to a government’s decision, suggesting this is part
of the rationale for creating an independent body. The bill maintains
that the budget for the new body will not be less than 30 million
shekels a year.“Antiquities are being destroyed and disappearing under
our watch almost daily, and we want to bring order to this situation,”
said committee chairman MK Zvi Sukkot, also a member of Otzma Yehudit.
“The state must take responsibility.”

COULD THE FALLING STARS-PLANETS BE PLEIADES AND ORION-JUST MY THOUGHT
Historically,
the Pleiades were seen as a group of seven stars – its brightest stars:
Alcyone, Atlas, Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta and Pleione are visible
to the keen naked eye. However modern observations show that this most
famous of open clusters is comprised of several hundred stars wreathed
in intricately structured nebulosity. As the Pleiades cluster is close to
the ecliptic (within 4°) in the constellation of Taurus it is a spring
and autumnal 'seasonal' object in both the northern and southern
hemispheres. Being close to the ecliptic, there are frequent
occultations of the cluster with the Moon and planets. To our
superstitious ancestors these were, no doubt, portentious events.
Likewise, the apparent annual motion of the cluster would have been
highly significant. The heliacal (near dawn) rising of the Pleiades in
spring in the northern hemisphere has from ancient times augured the
opening of the seafaring and farming season: while its dawn autumnal
setting marked the season's end.And also Spring and fall are Bird
migration seasons in Israel. It would not surprise me if Israeli wars are
not fought around the time of the Pleiades-Orion happenings. The Bible
contains three direct references to the Pleiades in Job 9:9 and 38:31,
and Amos 5:8, and a single indirect reference in the New Testament. This
latter passage (Revelation 1:16) describes a vision of the coming of
the Messiah – who holds, in his right hand, seven stars.Well since the
meteors do hit the earth in the last 6 months of the 7 year tribulation
period.I believe.Jesus' return will be only 6 months or so from
happening. So this Pieades (meteorites) earth hit would be warning the
world that Jesus is about to return to earth literally.

12
And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a
great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the
moon became as blood;
13 And the stars (METORITES) of heaven fell
unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she
is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and
the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every
free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the
face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come;(LAST HALF OF THE 7 YR TRIB) and who shall be able to stand?

with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became

9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10
And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star (ASTEROID)
from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part
of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of
the star (ASTEROID) is called Wormwood:(bitter,Poisoned) and the third
part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters,
because they were made bitter.(poisoned)
12 And the fourth angel
sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part

third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part
of it, and the night likewise.(HERES WERE THE ASTEROID HIT BLOCKS THE

And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven,
saying with a loud voice, Woe,(1) woe,(2) woe,(3) to the inhabiters of
the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three
angels,which are yet to sound!

THE NEW
YEAR MIGHT BEGIN WITH GEOMAGNETIC STORMS: At least one CME will hit
Earth during the opening days of 2026. NOAA forecasters believe that one
or two CMEs might deliver glancing blows on Jan. 1st, followed by a
direct-hit CME on Jan. 2nd or 3rd. If all of them hit, the combined
effect of the CMEs could add up to a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm.
Aurora visibility will be mitigated by the glare from this week's full
Wolf Moon. CME impact alerts: SMS Text

WHY HASN'T THE NOVA EXPLODED? In the summer of
2024, NASA announced that a star named "T Coronae Borealis" (T CrB) was
about to explode. "It’ll fuel the next generation of scientists," the
space agency declared. Almost two years later, "our wait continues,"
says amateur astronomer Eric G David, who photographed the star's
location on Dec. 30th:
"T CrB is still near minimum brightness,
estimated to be between +9.5 and +10.0 on the morning of Dec 30th," says
David. "It remains invisible to the naked eye."
T CrB is a
"recurrent nova." That means it erupts not just once, but over and over
again. Its explosion in 1866 was the first nova astronomers had ever
seen in detail. No one knew what caused it. Another blast in 1946
established its period (79 or 80 years) and led researchers to the
modern interpretation.
T CrB is a binary star system consisting
of an ancient red giant circled by a hot white dwarf. Hydrogen from the
red giant spills onto the surface of the white dwarf. It takes about 80
years to accumulate a critical mass, then–BOOM–a thermonuclear explosion
occurs. So, why hasn't the nova exploded? It might be as simple as this:
NASA's announcement was a little premature. 80 years after the last
explosion would be 2026, which means the New Year could bring an
exploding star, after all.

Canada's cold crunch is continuing into the
new year after a winter storm slammed Ontario and Quebec Monday and
Tuesday, wreaking havoc on the roads and leaving tens of thousands
without power.Millions were under yellow and orange weather warnings
from Environment Canada as storms sweep through Ontario and Quebec.Snow
squalls, blowing snow and cold temperatures followed Monday's freezing
rain, further complicating travel. In Ontario and Quebec, storm fronts
brought freezing rain, blowing snow and strong winds, leaving tens of
thousands without power at one point.Much of Canada has been blasted
with a number of weather systems over the last week, ranging from
blizzards and cold snaps to freezing rain. Cold temperatures have
followed in eastern provinces and are expected to last until the end of
the week, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)
forecasts. In B.C., some residents were left stranded after heavy
rainfall washed out a section of Highway 16 in Haida Gwaii, connecting
the north and south parts of the island.Residents said the washout cut
off a critical north-south route on the archipelago, affecting access to
hospitals and critical infrastructure.Environment and Climate Change
Canada (ECCC) says an atmospheric river system from the Pacific has
stalled over B.C.'s North Coast, bringing a prolonged period of rain to
Kitimat and nearby areas.A flood watch from the B.C. River Forecast
Centre for Haida Gwaii and the North Coast has been in place since Dec.
27, with nearby rivers possibly reaching or exceeding bank levels due to
the rain.Meanwhile, a strengthening bomb cyclone is barrelling its way
across the northern United States, unleashing severe winter weather in
the Midwest and aiming at the East Coast.Click on this interactive map

weather alerts across Canada:The federal weather agency says some areas
northeast of Quebec City and into northern New Brunswick could see
between 15 and 40 centimetres of snow Tuesday, along with high winds. In
London and the Lake Huron and Georgian Bay regions, ECCC is warning of
continuing blizzard conditions with "dangerous snow squalls," advising
residents to beware of prolonged disruptions to transportation, services
and utilities."Dangerous snow squalls and significant blowing snow
continue," the agency said, noting snow could continue falling until
Thursday and, in some places, reach 50 centimetres of accumulation.
"Near-zero visibility remains the primary concern due to northwesterly
winds gusting 50 to 70 km/h."Those winds are expected to ease by Tuesday
evening, the warning said.A large swath of northern Ontario, stretching
east and covering northern parts of Quebec as well, is under yellow
warning for "difficult winter conditions," which include about 10 more
centimetres of snow, strong winds and reduced visibility.Millions of
Canadians remain under yellow and orange weather warnings from
Environment Canada on Tuesday morning after a winter storm brought
freezing rain, blowing snow and strong winds across the eastern half of
the country. Parts of Ontario and Quebec braced for another messy day on
the roads, while in Halifax, flights were resuming after the weather
shut down the airport.Parts of the Atlantic region were under yellow or
orange warnings Tuesday, with additional snow and strong winds expected
in northern New Brunswick, as well as snow squalls forecast for the Nova
Scotia counties of Annapolis, Kings, Hants, Colchester and
Cumberland.Meanwhile, Air Canada cautioned on its website that flights
to and from Montreal, Ottawa and both Toronto airports could still be
affected Tuesday, as the airline recovers from a weather-related
backlog. It comes after a number of flights were cancelled or delayed in
Montreal, Toronto, London, Ont., Halifax and St. John's on
Monday.Southern Quebec is no longer under weather warnings, but is
seeing colder temperatures after freezing rain coated streets and
sidewalks in Montreal, prompting 100 911 calls an hour on Monday
morning, an ambulance service reported. Despite a thaw later in the day
Monday, many surfaces are once again covered in ice in Montreal and
other parts of Southern Quebec as the temperature hits –13 C (feeling
like –24 C), according to ECCC.With files from The Canadian Press

ISAIAH 24:17-23 KJV
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18
And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the
fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of
the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are
open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20
The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed

are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and
shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be
visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed,
when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and
before his ancients gloriously.

China says live-fire drills around Taiwan 'completed successfully'.
Beijing,
Dec 31 (AFP) Dec 31, 2025-China "successfully completed" military
drills around Taiwan that included live-fire exercises aimed at
simulating a blockade of key ports and assaults on maritime targets, its
military said on Wednesday.Beijing launched missiles and deployed
dozens of fighter jets, navy ships and coastguard vessels on Monday and
Tuesday around Taiwan's main island.Taipei slammed the war games as
"highly provocative and reckless" and said they failed to impose a
blockade of the self-ruled island.China's Communist Party has never
ruled democratic Taiwan, but Beijing claims the island of 23 million
people is part of its territory and has threatened to use force to annex
it."The reunification of our motherland, a trend of the times, is
unstoppable," Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his 2026 New Year
message from Beijing later on Wednesday, state news agency Xinhua
reported.A spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command of China's
People's Liberation Army (PLA) said it had "successfully completed" the
drills, code-named "Justice Mission 2025".Command spokesperson Senior
Captain Li Xi said Chinese troops would keep training to "resolutely
thwart the attempts of 'Taiwan Independence' separatists and external
intervention".The Taiwanese coastguard said earlier that Chinese
warships and coastguard vessels were withdrawing from surrounding
waters.Taiwan's coastguard was maintaining a deployment of 11 ships at
sea because China Coast Guard vessels hadn't "completely left the area
yet" and "we can't let our guard down", its deputy director-general
Hsieh Ching-chin told AFP earlier on Wednesday.Taiwan's President Lai
Ching-te warned on Wednesday that Chinese drills targeting the island
"are not an isolated incident" and pose "significant risks" to the
region."China's authoritarian expansion and escalating coercion pose
significant risks to regional stability and also impact global shipping,
trade and peace," he said at a ceremony for military officers in
Taipei.China's drills followed a bumper round of arms sales to Taipei by
the United States, Taiwan's main security backer, and comments from
Japan's prime minister that the use of force against Taiwan could
warrant a military response from Tokyo.- International criticism -There
has been a chorus of international criticism of China's drills.Japan
said on Wednesday that China's military exercises "increase tensions"
across the Taiwan Strait, and that it had expressed its "concerns" to
Beijing.Australia's foreign ministry condemned the "destabilising"
drills, saying it had raised concerns with its Beijing counterparts. The
Philippines' defence department also said it was "deeply concerned" over
drills that threatened to "undermine regional peace and
stability".Beijing said criticism of its exercises was
"irresponsible"."These countries and institutions are turning a blind
eye to the separatist forces in Taiwan attempting to achieve
independence through military means," foreign ministry spokesman Lin
Jian told a news briefing on Wednesday."Yet, they are making
irresponsible criticisms of China's necessary and just actions to defend
its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, distorting facts
and confusing right and wrong, which is utterly hypocritical."China said
on Tuesday it had deployed destroyers, frigates, fighters and bombers
"to conduct drills on subjects of identification and verification,
warning and expulsion, simulated strikes, assault on maritime targets,
as well as anti-air and anti-submarine operations".A statement from its
armed forces said the exercises in waters to the north and south of
Taiwan "tested capabilities of sea-air coordination and integrated
blockade and control".The drills were held as US ambassador to China
David Perdue met with his counterparts from Australia, India and Japan,
which are part of the Quad group that is seen as a counter to
Beijing."The Quad is a force for good working to maintain a free and
open Indopacific," Perdue said in a post on X on Tuesday, alongside a
photo of the four ambassadors in Beijing.burs-aw-mya/pbt
Taiwan coastguard says Chinese ships 'withdrawing' from waters near island.
Taipei,
Dec 31 (AFP) Dec 31, 2025-Chinese warships and coastguard vessels are
withdrawing from waters around Taiwan, the island's coastguard said
Wednesday, with Beijing's military drills appearing to be "over"."The
warships and coastguard vessels are withdrawing, but a few are still
lingering outside the 24-nautical-mile line," Hsieh Ching-chin, deputy
director-general of Taiwan's coastguard, told AFP, indicating the
"drills should be over".China launched missiles and deployed dozens of
fighter jets, navy ships and coastguard vessels to encircle the island
on Monday and Tuesday. They were part of live-fire drills aimed at
simulating a blockade of the Taiwan's key ports and assaults on maritime
targets.Communist China has never ruled democratic Taiwan, but Beijing
claims the island is part of its sovereign territory and has threatened
to use force to annex it.Taiwan's coastguard has maintained a deployment
of 11 ships at sea because China Coast Guard vessels "haven't
completely left the area yet", said Hsieh."We can't let our guard down,"
he said.
North Korea tests cruise missiles in show of 'combat readiness'By Hieun SHIN.
Seoul
(AFP) Dec 29, 2025-North Korea test-fired two strategic long-range
cruise missiles, state media reported Monday, hailing the exercise as a
show of "combat readiness" against foreign threats.Leader Kim Jong Un
oversaw the drill -- staged Sunday over the Yellow Sea to the west of
the Korean peninsula -- and called for "unlimited and sustained"
development of his nuclear weapons forces, the state-run Korean Central
News Agency said. The goal of the exercise was to review the
"counter-offensive response posture and combat capability of long-range
missile sub-units," KCNA said. The missiles flew for more than two hours,
state media said, sharing photos of the missiles being fired and
hitting a target.Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were
fired Sunday at 8:00 am (2300 GMT Saturday) from the Sunan area near the
capital Pyongyang.Kim vowed Pyongyang "would as ever devote all their
efforts to the unlimited and sustained development of the state nuclear
combat force", KCNA said.North Korea last staged a ballistic missile
test in early November, around a week after US President Donald Trump --
on a tour of the region -- expressed interest in meeting with
Kim.Pyongyang did not respond to the offer. At that time, Trump had just
approved South Korean plans to build a nuclear-powered submarine.Last
week Pyongyang showed off a nuclear submarine of its own.Photos
published by KCNA showed Kim walking alongside a purportedly 8,700-tonne
submarine at an indoor assembly site, surrounded by officials and his
daughter Kim Ju Ae.Pyongyang viewed Seoul developing nuclear subs as "an
offensive act severely violating its security and maritime
sovereignty", Kim said, according to KCNA.North Korean state media last
week also published a defence ministry statement condemning the docking
of the US Navy's nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Greenville in
South Korea's Busan. The cruise missile launch drill was aimed at
countering these moves, said Yang Moo-jin, former president of the
University of North Korean Studies in Seoul."The arrow-type cruise
missiles, with a range of around 2,000 kilometres, are capable of
striking not only the entire Korean peninsula but also rear bases of US
forces stationed in Japan," Yang told AFP.
North Korea's Kim orders factories to make more missiles in 2026 By Claire LEE.
Seoul
(AFP) Dec 26, 2025-North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered
officials to step up production of missiles and construct more factories
to meet his military's growing need for the projectiles, state media
said Friday.Pyongyang has significantly increased missile testing in
recent years -- aimed, analysts say, at improving precision strike
capabilities, challenging the United States as well as South Korea, and
testing weapons before exporting them to key ally Russia. In a visit to
munitions factories accompanied by top officials, the state-run Korean
Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim had ordered the factories to prepare
for a busy year ahead. The North Korean leader said they needed "to
further expand the overall production capacity" to keep pace with demand
from Pyongyang's armed forces and ordered the building of new munitions
plants, KCNA reported."The missile and shell production sector is of
paramount importance in bolstering up the war deterrent," Kim said.North
Korea and Russia have drawn closer since Moscow launched its invasion
of Ukraine nearly four years ago, and Pyongyang has sent troops to fight
for Russia, along with artillery shells, missiles and long-range rocket
systems. In return, Russia is sending North Korea financial aid,
military technology and food and energy supplies, analysts
say.Washington has also pointed to evidence that Russia is stepping up
support for North Korea, including providing help on advanced space and
satellite technology, in return for its assistance in fighting
Ukraine.Analysts say satellite launchers and intercontinental ballistic
missiles (ICBMs) share much of the same underlying technology."With its
ICBM program already at a stage widely seen as having achieved core
objectives, Pyongyang is likely to further accelerate development next
year," said Ahn Chan-il, a researcher originally from North Korea. The
country is likely to shift "focus toward testing and producing systems
linked to potential exports to Russia -- including medium- and
intermediate-range missiles," he added.- Nuclear-powered sub -Kim's
visit was reported a day after state media said he had toured a nuclear
submarine factory and vowed to counter the "threat" of South Korea
producing its own such vessels with Washington's backing. The North
Korean leader also learned about research into "new underwater secret
weapons", KCNA said.North Korea is expected to "seek advanced military
technologies from Russia, including nuclear-powered submarine
capabilities and fighter jets, as it looks to address its air force's
relative weakness," analyst Ahn told AFP.Kim was reported Thursday to
have overseen the test launch of new-type high-altitude long-range
anti-air missiles over the Sea of Japan. And he said that "new
modernisation and production plans" would be unveiled at his ruling
Korean Workers Party's first congress in half a decade, expected in
early 2026.
Israeli air force deploys first laser interception system By AFP Staff Writers.
Jerusalem
(AFP) Dec 28, 2025-Israel's defence ministry said on Sunday it had
deployed a new "Iron Beam" laser system for the air force to intercept
aerial threats. The laser system's main developers, the ministry's
research and development department and defence contractor Rafael,
delivered it to the air force at a ceremony in northern Israel."For the
first time globally, a high-power laser interception system has achieved
full operational maturity, successfully executing multiple
interceptions," Defence Minister Israel Katz said at the ceremony,
according to a statement."This monumental achievement... delivers a
critical message to our enemies, near and far alike: do not challenge
us, or face severe consequences," he said. The handover marks a major
milestone in a project more than a decade old."Israel has become the
first country in the world to field an operational laser system for the
interception of aerial threats, including rockets and missiles," said
Yuval Steinitz, chairman of Rafael. The laser system seeks to enhance and
slash the cost of Israel's interception of projectiles, and will
supplement other aerial defence capacities such as the more well-known
Iron Dome.Iron Dome offers short-range protection against missiles and
rockets. The David's Sling system and successive generations of Arrow
missiles are Israeli-American technology built to bring down ballistic
missiles. The defence ministry announced in early December that the laser
system was complete, and would be deployed by the end of the
month.During the 12-day war launched by Israel against Iran in June, the
country's missile defence system failed to intercept all the
projectiles fired by Tehran toward Israeli territory.Israel has since
acknowledged being hit by more than 50 missiles during the war with
Iran, resulting in 28 deaths.
Thailand and Cambodia declare truce after weeks of clashes by AFP Staff Writers.
Bangkok
(AFP) Dec 27, 2025-Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an "immediate"
ceasefire on Saturday, the two countries said in a joint statement,
pledging to end border clashes that killed dozens of people.UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement "as a
positive step towards alleviating the suffering of civilians... and
creating an environment conducive to achieving lasting peace", spokesman
Stephane Dujarric said.At least 47 people were killed and more than a
million displaced in three weeks of fighting with artillery, tanks,
drones and jets, according to official tallies. The conflict spread to
nearly every border province on both sides, shattering an earlier truce
for which US President Donald Trump took credit.Cambodia and Thailand
agreed to the ceasefire that took effect at 12 pm (0500 GMT), said the
declaration signed by the Southeast Asian neighbours' defence ministers
at a border checkpoint on the Thai side. The truce applies to "all types
of weapons, including attacks on civilians, civilian objects and
infrastructures, and military objectives of either side, in all cases
and all areas".Both sides agreed to freeze all troop movements and allow
civilians living in border areas to return home as soon as possible,
the statement said. They also agreed to cooperate on demining efforts and
combatting cybercrime, while Thailand was to return 18 captured
Cambodian soldiers within 72 hours.Thai Defence Minister Nattaphon
Narkphanit said the initial three-day window would be an "observation
period to confirm that the ceasefire is real".He called the truce "a
door to a peaceful resolution" in a speech earlier on Saturday.Displaced
Cambodian Oeum Raksmey told AFP she was "very happy that people can
return home" if the fighting stops."But I dare not return home yet. I am
still scared," said the 22-year-old, who has sheltered with her family
in Cambodia's Siem Reap province.- 'Real peace' -On the other side of
the border, 55-year-old Thai village head Khampong Lueklarp was
similarly cautious."I personally think the ceasefire won't really
happen," said the head of Ban Ta Sawang Samakkee village in Sisaket
province, adding he hoped for "a real peace".The ceasefire followed
three days of border talks convened following a crisis meeting of
foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN).EU foreign affairs spokesman Anouar El Anouni, in a post on X,
thanked "ASEAN for playing a positive part" and called on Cambodia and
Thailand to implement the agreement "in good faith".The European bloc
was ready to provide any needed support, he added. The United States and
China also pushed for an end to the fighting.Beijing's foreign ministry
said the ceasefire "demonstrates that dialogue and consultations are a
realistic and effective way of resolving complex disputes", offering
support moving forward.China's top diplomat Wang Yi will host the
Cambodian and Thai foreign ministers for talks in Yunnan province on
January 28-29, the countries said. The conflict stems from a territorial
dispute over the colonial-era demarcation of the 800-kilometre
(500-mile) Thai-Cambodian border, where both sides claim ancient
temples.- Broken ceasefire -Five days of fighting in July killed dozens
of people before a truce was brokered by the United States, China and
ASEAN chair Malaysia.Trump witnessed the signing of an expanded
agreement between Thailand and Cambodia in October, but it was broken
within months, with each side blaming the other for instigating the
fresh fighting. At least 25 Thai soldiers and one Thai civilian were
killed in the latest round of clashes, officials said.Cambodia,
outgunned and outspent by Bangkok's military, said 21 civilians were
killed.Phnom Penh has reported no military deaths, even though an
official Facebook post showed first lady Pich Chanmony, the wife of
Cambodia's leader Hun Manet, at a funeral for troops killed in the
fighting. The violence was still raging while this week's border talks
were underway. On Friday, Cambodia accused Thailand of intensifying its
bombardment of disputed border areas, and Thai media reported Cambodian
attacks overnight. While both sides agreed to halt the fighting, they
will still need to resolve the demarcation of their border following the
ceasefire. The contested temples are claimed by both nations because of a
vague demarcation made by Cambodia's French colonial administrators in
1907.UN human rights chief Volker Turk said he hoped the ceasefire "will
pave the way for confidence building & peace".
Thais, Cambodians fear returning home despite border truce.
Bangkok
(AFP) Dec 28, 2025 - At a Thai university-turned-shelter for displaced
people, Kanlaya Somjettana is reluctant to go home even after a truce
halted weeks of border clashes with Cambodia, fearing the violence may
not be over. She said some people forced to flee the fighting began
returning home on Sunday, a day after the ceasefire was announced, but
many evacuees on both sides of the border preferred waiting for an
official word that it was safe. Some cited a lack of trust that the
neighbouring country would respect the truce, after previous ones had
been broken."I really hope this ceasefire will last long and we can
return home," 21-year-old homemaker Kanlaya told AFP from the university
campus in Thailand's Surin city."But I will not go back home as long as
authorities do not confirm that it is safe," she said, adding that the
evacuation centre was now less crowded, although hundreds remained
there. On the Cambodian side, 35-year-old So Choeun said she expected to
give birth within days and hoped to then take her baby home, about one
kilometre (0.6 miles) from the border. But not yet, said the woman
sheltering with family under makeshift tents at a Buddhist pagoda in
Banteay Meanchey province."Despite the ceasefire, we dare not return
home yet. We are still frightened," she told AFP."We will wait to see
the situation for a few days, if it will stay calm."Officials on both
sides said the day-old ceasefire was holding on Sunday, but for most
areas, there has been no all-clear notice just yet.The truce follows
three weeks of renewed cross-border fighting that killed at least 47
people and displaced more than a million on both sides.China has been
involved in mediation efforts, and Beijing's top diplomat Wang Yi is
hosting the Cambodian and Thai foreign ministers for talks in Yunnan
province on Sunday and Monday.Wang told his Cambodian counterpart Prak
Sokhonn that the ceasefire "has opened the process of rebuilding peace",
according to a statement from Beijing's foreign ministry."In the next
step, both sides should proceed step by step to promote a comprehensive
and lasting ceasefire, restore normal exchanges, rebuild mutual trust,
and achieve a turnaround in relations," Wang added.- 'Good sign' -A
previous round in the decades-old conflict -- five days of fighting in
July -- killed dozens before a truce was brokered, and then broken. Many
of those displaced by the latest violence had evacuated in July,
too.Rice and cassava farmer Saichon Wongpitak said she could not afford
to wait any longer, planning to return to her home in Thailand's Sisaket
province on Sunday afternoon."I talked to our neighbour who said there
was no gunfire since yesterday," Saichon, 38, told AFP, adding that her
family would evacuate again if necessary."We have fear... but we have
jobs to do at home, we have cattle at home, we have our farm," she
said.Saichon said she was glad to hear of the truce, but did not expect
it to last long "before Cambodia starts a new round of fighting"."I live
on the border and what I have learned is not to trust Cambodia," she
said.Under the truce, the two countries agreed to cease fire, freeze
troop movements and allow civilians living in border areas to return
home as soon as possible, while Thailand was to return 18 Cambodian
soldiers captured in July within 72 hours.Kot Ngik, 43, from another
camp for displaced people in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey, said she was
thankful for the truce since it may allow children to soon return to
school. But "we don't trust the Thai military yet", she said."At this
point, we are not sure about the situation. They can fight again at any
time."While many evacuees, including Kot Ngik, were still too fearful to
leave shelters, So Choeun said the ceasefire at least offered some
hope."Yesterday morning, I could hear loud bangs, but I have not heard
it since 12:00 pm yesterday," she said."This is a good sign."
'Positive
optimism serves as practical direction of action'-In 1988, a futurist
envisioned Israel in 2025. Some of his predictions were spot-on-In his
book ‘Israel in the Year 2025,’ Dr. Alan Price imagines the Jewish state
in an era of space travel, but his visions of smart homes, solar fields
and cellphones ring true-By Zack Rothbart Today, 1:11 pm-DEC 31,25
At
some point in the 1980s, Dr. Alan Price sat down to research and write a
book about Israel in the future — in 2025, to be specific.A scholar in
“future studies” — which he described as “partly a science and partly an
art… based on imaginative and creative thinking” — Price set out to
present a “coherent analysis in vivid and graphic language” of what
Israel might look like in some four decades. His predictions, put forth
in “Israel in the Year 2025: A Concise History of the Future,” were
based on two years of research on various topics related to
demographics, building plans and technological trends, among others.“It
is not a ‘prophecy’ or an ‘exact prediction,’” Price warned in his
introduction. “The only prediction that can be made with confidence
about the future is that nothing will happen in exactly the way it has
been described in this book.”Price hoped that by better understanding
the details of how Israeli history might play out, “we may be able to
make preparations that will render ‘dangerous futures’ less probable or
less dangerous and influence ‘desirable futures.’”“As a Zionist, he was
always thinking of how to improve things in Israel, and what the future
will bring for this young country,” said his son, Prof. Colin Price, a
geophysicist at Tel Aviv University, in an interview with The Times of
Israel.Alan Price was born in the White Russian shtetl of Dolhinov
amidst the throes of World War I. When he was 17, just four years before
the Holocaust, his father took the family to South Africa, devoid of
wealth and any significant knowledge of the English language. Within
just a few years, though, Price was able to go to medical school and
rise to positions of prominence in various organizations.A devout
Revisionist Zionist, Price accompanied Zeev Jabotinsky when the renowned
ideological forefather of the Likud Movement visited South Africa prior
to his death in 1940. Fresh out of medical school, the young Dr. Price
volunteered to fight for Israel’s independence as well, serving as a
combat medic in the Givati Brigade during the 1948 war. In 1980, he,
along with his wife and four sons, ultimately settled in the state he
fought to establish.Through it all, Price remained an optimist — a trait
he unapologetically brought to his predictions about Israel’s future.“A
positive optimism serves both as a practical direction of action to be
taken and to counter pessimism and defeatism, which so often
unfortunately pass for ‘realism.’ The special virtue of positive
optimism is its capacity to transcend the limitations of the present
circumstances, to inspire alternative thinking, and to open new
directions for political action,” he wrote. So what exactly did Price
predict? The book covers far more than simply Israel in 2025; it
includes details about local, regional and global events from the 1980s
onward that would ultimately shape the Jewish state. In Price’s future
Israel, geopolitics were molded by the assassination of Yasser Arafat,
Muammar Gadhafi’s development of nuclear weapons, and 1996’s “Laser
War,” which would see Syria stand out as a major military threat. The
“Arab-Iranian union” disintegrated, leading to warm relations between
Israel and at least some of its neighbors. The USSR never fell.On the
civilian front, Israeli commuters in Price’s 2025 benefit from
“air-cum-space travel,” allowing them to reach New York in just 36
minutes from Tel Aviv. Israeli workers also enjoy a three-day weekend,
accommodating the country’s three monotheistic faiths. In fact, the
country’s population swells in part due to significant Christian Zionist
immigration. The Lubavitcher rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, also
moved to Israel, laboring in the fields to set a personal example of how
both Torah study and work must be intrinsic elements in the life of any
Jew of faith.Price correctly foresees the dramatic rise of Israeli
consumerism and creature comforts in ways that sound obvious today but
were far from certain for Israelis in the 1980s, a few short years after
hyperinflation all but bankrupted the country. In 2025, according to
Price, “No house or apartment [is] complete without two or three
bathrooms, air conditioner, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven,
telephone, TV set, and a computer terminal.”High schoolers by that time
are already “experienced in searching for information about anything
and everything from the comfort of [their] desk[s].” Cellular telephones
are “so small that they could be carried as a personal communication
device on the wrist, in the breast pocket, or in a lady’s
handbag.”Moreover, nearly a decade before Jeff Bezos founded Amazon, and
some two decades before touchscreen smartphones became central to most
Israelis’ lives, Price saw much of that coming:“Shoppers could speak by
direct voice into the home computer and request to see the prices and
quality of various goods. A touch-sensitive screen displayed the items.
The electronic shopper could change from shop to shop by just calling
the name of the store on the computer microphone. After selecting, the
shopper typed out a number and code on the microcomputer terminal, gave
instructions where the order was to be delivered, along with the
necessary credit card information.”His forecast of smart homes reads
almost prophetically, in what he called “the architronic home”: “The
‘electronic home’ is the vogue with the ‘moderns.’ The house is flexible
and geared to communication and information. An ‘intelligent’ house
with a brain of its own… it can be adapted to the various life-styles of
its inhabitants and to their changing moods.“Each house has a computer
brain that is located in a small cupboard. It is of a most advanced type
and connected to a multiplicity of sensors and activators by wires
within the walls…”Lots of hits — and some misses-Not all of his
technology prognostications were on point, however. We still don’t have a
permanent station on the moon — which Price thought would be functional
by 2008 — followed by lunar communities that would influence global
cultural and social trends, and visits to Mars.Back in Israel, while
Price did correctly foresee the rise of significant photovoltaic farms
in the Negev Desert, his predictions of a “Lake Herzl” and massive
“solar ponds” on the shores of the Dead Sea, fed by a direct canal from
the Mediterranean, were less than precise.Price foresaw the healthcare
community beginning “to focus on ‘wellness’ and not merely on ‘the cure
of disease.’” Already brewing to some extent in the 1980s, he also
foresaw Israel’s 1995 passage of the National Health Insurance Law,
which guaranteed basic universal healthcare to all residents.
Unfortunately, his prediction that nearly all dental caries would be
eliminated by 2010 fell short.Five years after the elimination of
cavities, Price predicts, the “Jerusalem Declaration on Technology”
comes into being, addressing many of the pressing issues now keeping
much of the world up at night. The document clearly spells out
scientists’ moral responsibilities around issues such as “the threat of
nuclear annihilation, the terrifying power of biotechnology and genetic
engineering, the enormous scope of the computers and artificial
intelligence, and the mind boggling opportunities of space exploration,”
which have left humankind “in a state of bewilderment, fear, and the
insecurity bordering on panic.”Jerusalem is, of course, also the center
of celebrations around Israel’s 75th birthday, seeing 100 world leaders
gather in the eternal capital of the Jewish people, including the
presidents of the United States, China and the USSR: “There were no
military parades in Jerusalem. The people of Israel did not celebrate
their freedom by showing weapons and marching soldiers through the
streets of Jerusalem. Instead, the people showed off their achievements
in macroengineering, transportation, communications, and irrigation.”Not
a ‘prophet of doom’In the real 2025, Price’s son thinks,
“Technologically and economically,” his father “would be super proud of
what the country has done, and our standing in the world as the Startup
Nation, with groundbreaking technologies in water, cyber and inventions
like the Iron Dome. This would have made him extremely proud to know how
Israel has advanced technologically and become an economic
superpower.”Politically, however, things are generally more complicated
and less rosy. The elder Price indeed envisioned an Israel in which “the
government was repeatedly extricating itself from crisis after crisis.
The electoral system was outdated and the individual was impotent in the
face of the party machine. Neither the members of the Knesset nor its
officialdom knew the meaning of the word ‘accountability’… the major
flaw in the system was a lack of leadership.”Still, his son thinks that
his optimistic father “would be very depressed to see what has happened”
in Israel today, specifically “to his beloved Likud party.”“The war
over the last two years and the indifference shown by the government to
the hostages, those displaced in the south and north, and the lack of
taking responsibility for their role in the tragedy that struck us all
on October 7 [2023]. I think that would have been very painful to him,
and I am glad he did not get to see this dark chapter in the history of
Israel,” Colin Price said.Nonetheless, as a dedicated Zionist, Price
senior “was always thinking of how to improve things in Israel, and what
the future will bring for this young country,” said his son.“Many
disaster books and crises papers or even apocalyptic Armageddon
scenarios have been postulated for the future of Israel,” Price wrote in
the introduction to his 1988 book. “It is my sincere conviction that
future history will prove all these ‘prophets of doom’ wrong.”
Iranian
demonstrators reportedly try to enter government building amid 4th day
of protests-Iran state media reports ‘leader of rioters’ arrested, as
video from Fasa shows security forces firing toward protesters;
Netanyahu said keeping mum so Tehran won’t have excuse to target

Iranian
protesters tried to break into a local government building in the
southern Fars Province on Wednesday, state media said, on a fourth day
of mounting demonstrations over the cost of living.Protests over high
inflation and a slump in the value of the local rial currency began
among shopkeepers in Tehran on Sunday, and have since drawn in students
across the country.“A few hours ago, an organized group tried to get
into the governorate building in the city of Fasa; their attack failed
with the intervention of security forces,” state media said. “The leader
of these rioters, a 28-year-old woman, was arrested.”Iran’s Tasnim news
agency cited a local official as saying four “attackers” were detained
and three members of the security forces had been wounded during the
incident.A video carried by state media showed a group of people trying
to break open the gate of the building. Reuters verified the location of
the footage but was not able to independently verify the
timing.Additional footage from Fasa, said to have been filmed Wednesday,
showed security forces firing toward demonstrators. The governor of Fasa
told state media that “the protests were caused by inflation and
economic conditions. Individuals influenced by hostile channels and
media participated in them… the situation is back to normal.”Iranian
authorities have responded to previous protests over issues ranging from
prices, drought, women’s rights and political freedoms with forceful
security measures and extensive arrests. This time, however, the
government said it would also set up a “dialogue mechanism” with leaders
of the demonstrations, the first major protests since Israeli and US
strikes on Iran in June, which prompted widespread expressions of
patriotic solidarity. It has not said how the mechanism would work. While
voicing support for previous anti-government protests in Iran and the
toppling of the Islamic Republic, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has
decided not to publicly weigh in on the ongoing demonstrations due to
concern that this will offer Tehran an excuse to target Israel in order
to distract from the country’s economic woes, according to a Channel 12
news report Wednesday. The network said the decision came following a
briefing Netanyahu held on the matter at his hotel in West Palm Beach,
where he met this week with US President Donald Trump to discuss, among
other topics, the possibility of renewed military action against Iran’s
nuclear and missile programs.“We’re watching dramatic domestic events in
Iran, but it’s too early to tell what the ramifications will be,” a
senior Israeli official told Channel 12.Iran’s economy has faced
significant challenges for years following the reimposition of US
sanctions in 2018, when Trump withdrew from an international agreement
concerning Iran’s nuclear program during his first term.Iran’s rial
currency has lost nearly half its value against the dollar in 2025, with
inflation reaching 42.5% in December in a country where unrest has
repeatedly flared in recent years. In September, United Nations sanctions
were reinstated, and Reuters reported in October that Iranian
authorities held multiple high-level meetings to address economic
instability, find ways to bypass sanctions, and handle public
discontent. In 2022, Iran faced protests across the country over price
hikes, including for bread, a major staple.Over the same period and into
2023, the country’s clerical rulers faced the boldest unrest in years,
triggered by the death of a young Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, in
the custody of the morality police, who enforce a strict female dress
code.
Anti-Zionism is a new chapter of Jew-hatred that must be
confronted head-on, say activist academics-A growing number of alarmed
scholars and professional groups call for a paradigm shift, arguing the
existing tools for identifying this form of antisemitism don’t meet the
moment-By Luke Tress-Today, 10:08 pm-DEC 31,25
Adam Louis-Klein, a
Jewish anthropologist, was living in an indigenous village in
Colombia’s Amazon rainforest on October 7, 2023, studying the local
Desana people, with no phone service or internet access. Two days later,
he made his way to a nearby town and reconnected to the wider world for
the first time in months. The first thing he saw was news of the Hamas
slaughter in Israel. The second was his leftist colleagues justifying
the terrorist invasion. He posted “Am Yisrael Chai” on Facebook and was
berated for it.“I was already starting to be purged. I soon lost
virtually all of my social and professional contacts in academia,” he
said. “I decided that it was important to have an intellectual
response.”Louis-Klein, 32, began to apply his background in philosophy
and anthropology to studying anti-Zionism. He came to view the
anti-Zionist movement as a new form of an old hatred — not a political
ideology that bleeds into antisemitism, but a distinct chapter in the
historical discrimination against Jews. He launched the Movement Against
Antizionism (MAAZ) earlier this year as part of that effort to push
back.Louis-Klein and MAAZ are part of a network of scholars and
activists pushing the Jewish community to tackle anti-Zionism as a hate
movement, not as a political ideology. They argue that anti-Zionism has
its own history, ideology and tactics that are used to target Jews, but
that differ from how most Americans have historically understood
anti-Jewish hatred, allowing anti-Zionists to evade charges of
discrimination. The activists want American Jews to move on from the
antisemitism paradigm as a framework for understanding discrimination
against Jews, to stop quibbling about when anti-Zionism crosses the line
into antisemitism, and instead confront anti-Zionism head-on.Academics,
activists and professionals are increasingly adopting the message, with
statements, protest signs and new groups appearing in recent months
decrying anti-Zionism as its own hate movement. An understanding of
anti-Zionism also appears to be coalescing, with many of the groups
putting out similar messaging.Jewish roots revived in the
jungle-Louis-Klein was raised Jewish, had a bar mitzvah, visited Israel
as a youth, and was involved in Jewish life while studying philosophy at
Yale University. He later became interested in Communist philosophy,
adopted “radical leftist” views and moved away from his Jewish identity
and connection to Israel, he told The Times of Israel in an
interview. That changed in the Amazon. Like Jews, the Desana, an
indigenous tribe, view themselves as chosen by their God with whom they
have “a distinct covenant,” Louis-Klein said. He had studied in an
academy steeped in anti-colonial paradigms that he used to understand
the Desana, and on October 7, saw those same ideas turned against
Jews.“We were being forcibly redefined as something we don’t define
ourselves as — white colonists, European imperialists, people who have
no history in the land of Israel,” he said. “Our voices were themselves
being silenced. When we spoke back against this ideology, we were told
that we were weaponizing antisemitism.”Louis-Klein, currently a PhD
candidate in anthropology at McGill University in Montreal, started
engaging with anti-Zionists and studying their “stereotypical
behaviors,” such as issuing anti-Israel “libels,” submitting others to
litmus tests on Israel and marking out opponents as Zionists. He
observed that scholars in his own area, anthropology, “reorganized the
whole field around the genocide libel” against Israel since October 7.He
argues that libels, or false accusations of collective guilt against
Jews, have been central to the persecution of Jews for centuries, from
the medieval blood libel to the contemporary genocide accusation. In a
recurring cycle, anti-Jewish societies invent libels, repeat them
obsessively to stigmatize Jews, leading to violence, and after the
violence, denial, he says.‘Anti-zionism is not ‘criticism of Israeli
policy’ but a movement built on defamation and denial — one that seeks
the erasure of Jewish sovereignty and the diminishment of Jewish life
everywhere’“Anti-zionism is not ‘criticism of Israeli policy’ but a
movement built on defamation and denial — one that seeks the erasure of
Jewish sovereignty and the diminishment of Jewish life everywhere,” MAAZ
says on its website. “It does not debate borders or governments; it
indicts Jewish existence itself.”Anti-Zionism is also seen as a threat
because societies that have embraced the ideology have become largely
inhospitable to Jewish communal life, from the Soviet Union to
Iran.Antisemitism as an outdated model-Louis-Klein and other scholars
pushing the message believe the American Jewish community should move on
from the antisemitism paradigm, which classifies discrimination against
Jews using an outdated model. While “antisemitism” has become a
colloquial catch-all for discrimination against Jews, the term has a
specific historical definition linking discrimination to past racial
persecution of Jews. Anti-Zionists frame their activism as political
advocacy for the Palestinians, and not motivated by race or
religion. When protesters at a synagogue shout at Jews that they are
colonizers or settlers, though, they are not making a political
argument, but deploying the terms as slurs, Louis-Klein argues, even if
those slurs are not traditional antisemitic tropes.“We think that the
current frameworks basically grant them this exemption clause and
continue this dynamic of the Jews calling the non-Jews antisemites and
the-non Jews, the anti-Zionists specifically, basically libeling Israel
and claiming that it’s all some big lie to even talk about
antisemitism,” he said. “It doesn’t work, calling them
antisemites.”Zionism is defined by Jews as the support for Jewish
sovereignty in Israel, a belief held by the vast majority of Jews.
“Zionist” has largely become a derogatory term on much of the American
left, though. Street protesters often chant “We don’t want no Zionists
here” and have berated Jews as “Zionists” outside synagogues and in
Jewish neighborhoods.MAAZ has laid out its understanding of anti-Zionism
— that it is based on three core libels that are repeated obsessively
by activists, claiming that Zionists are colonizers, guilty of apartheid
and committing genocide. The movement’s ideological foundations lie in
the Islamist-Nazi alliance led by Jerusalem’s Haj Amin al-Husseini in
the World War II era, anti-Zionist Soviet propaganda, and the
settler-colonial theory in Western academia, MAAZ says.He and other
academics advocate for the term “antizionism” — one word — similar to
the accepted spelling of antisemitism. The academics believe that
anti-Zionism is the third major iteration in anti-Jewish hatred-The
academics believe that anti-Zionism is the third major iteration in
anti-Jewish hatred. The first was anti-Judaism, based on the Jewish
religion, and the second was “classical” antisemitism, a race-based
hatred of Jews exemplified by the Nazis, while anti-Zionism indicts
Israel and Jewish peoplehood. Those frameworks do not meet the moment,
the scholars say. After assailants killed Jews this year in Colorado and
Washington, DC, for example, statements denounced the murders as
antisemitic. Neither attacker voiced classical antisemitism, though.
They did not condemn the Jewish religion or Jews as a race, but both
said they killed to “free Palestine.” The Colorado firebomber shouted
“end Zionists” during the attack, told police he wanted to “kill all
Zionist people,” but said he didn’t discriminate against “all Jewish
people.” The terrorists who massacred Jews at a Hanukkah event in
Australia this month also said they were targeting “Zionists.”New York
City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani last week condemned an appointee’s past
statement about “money hungry Jews” — a classic antisemitic trope — but
defended other appointees who said “Zionism is racism” and that Zionists
are worse than Nazis.“We must distinguish between antisemitism and
criticism of the Israeli government,” Mamdani said. While the iterations
are different, the underlying impulse is the same — casting Jews as the
enemy, using the moral language of the time, whether it’s religion, race
or human rights, said Naya Lekht, a researcher on Soviet history and
the Holocaust and the co-founder of a group called Stop
Antizionism.“What’s unifying in all three eras is that this is a
villain-constructing project,” Lekht said. “Our villainy is in
opposition to what is considered the most moral thing of its
time.”“Today, the moral language is human rights, and so we are
constructed as violators of the purity of human rights. The purity of
Christianity, the purity of race, to the purity of human rights,” she
said.‘The leadership organizations right now should launch a full-scale
campaign against anti-Zionism’MAAZ argues that, like anti-Zionist Jews
today, anti-Jewish movements have used Jews in the past, such as the
Yevsektsiya, a Jewish branch of the Soviet Communist Party that
persecuted other Jews. The movement’s aim is to stigmatize anti-Zionism
by calling out the libel cycle and educating others about anti-Zionist
methods, ideology and history.“The language needs to be right. It needs
to be able to name what anti-Zionists are doing, name their tactics,
name their behavior, instead of debating,” Louis Klein said.“The
leadership organizations right now should launch a full-scale campaign
against anti-Zionism. They should educate people about anti-Zionism,” he
said. The term “antisemitism” itself was coined by anti-Jewish racists
who defined Jews as “semites,” and was later recognized as a hatred and
stigmatized. Not all experts are on board with a paradigm shift.Deborah
Lipstadt, the former US envoy for antisemitism, said she was “skeptical”
because antisemitism and anti-Zionism “overlap so directly and share
the same tropes and share the same stereotypes.”“It’s not that I’m
against it, but I haven’t been convinced. What would we accomplish?” she
said. “I fear it would simply confuse matters.”She argued that Jews
should “stress what Zionism is.”“It’s the national liberation movement
of the Jews. It’s rooted in our ancient traditions,” she said. “We
should make the case that Zionism is a very positive, integral part of
Jewish history, Jewish tradition, Jewish culture, the identity of being a
Jew.”A growing movement-The framework is increasingly taking root,
showing up on the streets, in public statements, and as a topic of
discussion. The single-word spelling of “antizionism” is becoming more
common. After a caustic demonstration outside a New York City synagogue
last month, the Union for Reform Judaism condemned the event as an
“anti-Zionist protest.”At a rally held in support of the synagogue,
Jewish protesters held signs calling out anti-Zionism, not antisemitism.
Some of the signs had the MAAZ logo, while others were
homemade.“Antizionists spread libels to mark Jews for violence,” one
sign said. “Antizionism is a hate movement,” said another.Last month, an
anonymous group of Jewish medical professionals authored an “open
letter on antizionism” in their field. The letter, signed by more than
1,000 health care professionals, said anti-Zionism “perpetuates the same
cycle of libel, stigma and violence that has attacked Jews for
centuries.”Dr. Yael Halaas, the founder of the American Jewish Medical
Association, was one of the letter’s signatories.‘There’s a terrible
disease state of antisemitism. The current strain is
anti-Zionism’“People who work in medicine and health care, when we see a
pandemic, when we see a disease, we have to call out the most recent
virulent strain,” Halaas said. “There’s a terrible disease state of
antisemitism. The current strain is anti-Zionism, and that’s what we are
seeing in health care.”“Anti-Zionism is a problem and a disease unto
itself,” she said.Stop Antizionism has released a “global declaration”
that asks signatories to affirm “that antizionism is the contemporary
expression of Jew hatred in its latest form.” Lekht said that more than
10,000 have signed the document, including around a dozen grassroots
Jewish organizations.Andrew Pessin, a philosophy professor at
Connecticut College, is launching the Institute for the Critical Study
of Antizionism to facilitate academic research on anti-Zionism. Pessin
envisions an interdisciplinary group of scholars, each focusing on their
own area of expertise, such as Nazi or Soviet anti-Zionism. The
institute will start with a series of webinars in February. The institute
is in its infancy, but Pessin said he has spoken to universities about
hosting the project and a couple have expressed “keen interest.” Around
70 professors have contacted him about participating, he said. There are
academic centers that study antisemitism around the US, but none focus
on anti-Zionism.MAAZ acts more as an activist group, while the institute
will focus on academic scholarship, Pessin said.‘As is often the case,
we Jews are years or decades behind. We’re always playing defense.
They’ve captured the academy in large measure’“As is often the case, we
Jews are years or decades behind. We’re always playing catch-up. We’re
always playing defense. They’ve captured the academy in large measure,
as we all know. This is the dominant ideology in the academy,” Pessin
said. “I think scholarship on this issue has become so incredibly
corrupted by the dominance of the anti-Zionists that I want to
reestablish the correct academic standards for the study of
Zionism.”Louis-Klein has become a common guest on Jewish podcasts and
has written about his views for the news and on social media, finding a
wide audience. (He has also written on The Times of Israel’s open
blogging platform.)Last month, Louis-Klein hosted an event in the
basement of the CUNY Graduate Center in midtown Manhattan. The room
overflowed with attendees, many of them academics grappling with
activism on their campuses.“Why are people so credulous about these
libels?” one professor asked. Another asked if Jews should stop
identifying as Zionists because, now that Israel exists, using that
label keeps questions about its continued existence at the surface. After
two hours, as organizers said they had to wrap up the event, hands were
still raised around the room.
