Spiritual Deception in the Age of AI-Authors-Eric Dahlin-The Promise and Peril of Generative AI.
Recent
advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI)—digital technology
that mimics human cognition—hold the potential to address some of
society’s most pressing challenges. From diagnosing disease with
unprecedented accuracy and analyzing vast amounts of data to helping
identify criminal suspects or find missing persons. And while AI holds
immense potential to address societal issues, it can also be weaponized
for insidious purposes. AI systems can orchestrate cyberattacks and
operate weapons autonomously, even launching military strikes with
little-to-no human oversight.AI-generated deepfakes represent another
significant threat. Deepfakes are hyper-realistic digital media
including videos, images, and audio. Their uses can range from harmless
entertainment—replacing an actor’s face in movie footage with the face
of another actor—to malicious. AI-generated deepfakes can be used to
manipulate public opinion, damage someone’s reputation, or challenge
deeply held religious beliefs. Imagine expertly crafted videos of
political or religious leaders making inflammatory statements or
endorsing morally questionable positions. Deepfakes could even imitate
events surrounding the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.Prophetic Warnings
About Spiritual Deception-Religious teachings have long cautioned
believers about the risks posed by false prophets and deceptive signs.
Speaking about the Last Days, Jesus Christ offered this warning: “Take
heed that no man deceive you; For many shall come in my name, saying—I
am Christ—and shall deceive many” (Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:5-6). He
continued by asserting that false Christs and false prophets “shall show
great signs and wonders, insomuch, that, if possible, they shall
deceive the very elect…” (Joseph Smith—Matthew 1: 22, italics added).
The Savior’s admonition highlights the potential for spiritual deception
that could challenge the beliefs of even the most faithful saints.
Contemporary Church leaders have echoed these sentiments about evil
conspirators’ attempts to deceive in the latter days. In his October
2019 General Conference talk, Elder Gary E. Stevenson noted, “Satan, the
father of lies and the great deceiver…. has spent millennia calculating
and practicing the ability to persuade God’s children to believe that
good is evil and evil is good.”[1] Strategies for Discernment in the
Digital Age-We can employ various strategies to contest sophisticated
strategies designed to deceive. Here are just three (among
others).Evaluate the source of the content. Is it coming from social
media or other news outlets known for sensationalism? Or is it coming
through official, authoritative channels? Find the original or primary
source. Is the content based on second-hand accounts? Or is it coming
from eyewitnesses? Consult a variety of sources. For significant current
or political events or messages, check several reputable news outlets
as well as fact-checking websites like Snopes.com and
FactCheck.org.Spiritual Guidance-Teachings from scriptures and church
leaders offer comparable guidance for detecting content that is
calculated to lead astray the followers of Jesus Christ.Rely on and
compare the content with Divinely inspired sources of truth. Compare it
with scriptural teachings about the Last Days found in passages like
Matthew 24, Doctrine and Covenants 45, 2 Thessalonians 2, and Revelation
6-19.Use the Holy Ghost to help us evaluate the content. John chapter
14 describes the Holy Ghost as the Spirit of Truth (verse 17), which can
teach us all things (verse 26). Doctrine and Covenants 45:57 indicates
that those who have received the truth and taken the Holy Spirit as
their guide will not be deceived in the latter days.Leverage multiple
sources. 2 Corinthians 13:1 states, “In the mouth of two or three
witnesses shall every word be established.” Reports of significant
events, statements by political or religious leaders, or any incident
involving the return of Jesus Christ, should be verified by multiple
sources including firsthand witnesses, regardless of online content that
is accompanied by visual or audible evidence.In an age where AI has the
potential to blur the lines further between imitation and reality, the
scriptures and church leaders provide guideposts for navigating and
exposing digital deception. And using them in combination will help us

universities, communities, or the public, raising urgent questions about

Last week, the White House
unveiled the Genesis Mission (opens in new window), an ambitious plan to
build a national AI platform for scientific discovery. (see the

in new window)).Genisis Misison-The Executive Order calls for
“build[ing] an integrated AI platform to harness Federal scientific
datasets — the world’s largest collection of such datasets, developed
over decades of Federal investments — to train scientific foundation
models and create AI agents to test new hypotheses, automate research
workflows, and accelerate scientific breakthroughs.” The aim is to “win
the race for global technology dominance.” As with other Administration
policies, it seeks to do so by centralizing control over the direction
of scientific research in the White House, affording universities and
the public little to no input.The order directs the Department of Energy
to integrate its supercomputers, national laboratories, robotic
facilities, and vast scientific datasets into a single “closed-loop” AI
system to power breakthroughs across fields from biotechnology and
materials science to fusion, semiconductors, and quantum computing.A
closed-loop AI system is one in which data, models, compute, and
experimental results circulate within a single, self-contained
environment, with little or no external visibility, external review, or
public access.With a sixty-day deadline to identify “20 science and
technology challenges of national importance” to tackle, the scale and
speed of Genesis are ambitious. “Built on artificial intelligence and
quantum computing, it will radically redefine the scale, speed, and
purpose of scientific progress in America.”This policy could amount to
the most significant centralization of federal research infrastructure
since the early Cold War. But the initiative's boldness only heightens
three unresolved questions that deserve urgent public attention and
outcry. 1. A Manhattan Project, not a Moonshot for AI -Genesis
consolidates unprecedented scientific power in the DOE and the White
House. Agencies must share datasets, align research, and integrate
infrastructure, yet the Executive Order creates no mechanisms for public
participation or democratic accountability. This includes:No
independent ethics or safety review,No public or community or even
science expert participation,No oversight in who will determine the
questions worth studying -No requirement for transparency or
auditability,No process for assessing social impacts.There’s no mention
of advisory committee oversight or adherence to the transparent
processes called for by the Federal Advisory Committee Act.The order
invokes the wartime mobilizations of the 1940s and 1960s, where secrecy
and speed were the point. But AI-accelerated science is not a weapons
program. Prioritizing problems, shaping datasets, and steering national
research should be a deep public decision.If Genesis is a national
scientific initiative, where is the nation’s voice? 2. Public
Infrastructure — or a Federal–Industrial Fortress? Genesis is described
as a closed-loop AI platform that uses proprietary, federal, and
synthetic data under tight national security constraints. In science,
closed systems historically slow discovery by limiting replication,
critique, and innovation outside the institution that controls the
tools. The project's website (opens in new window) lists dozens of
exclusively corporate partners. The order leaves fundamental access and
transparency questions unanswered:Who gets to use this system? Are
universities — especially public ones — meaningfully included? Will
independent researchers, nonprofits, or smaller labs have a pathway in?
The website says “DOE will open parts of the Genesis Mission platform to
qualified researchers, innovators, and companies,” but all the listed
partners are companies.Who will decide what corporate partners are
allowed in, and what’s the price of admission? The plan talks of
facilitating “agency collaboration with external partners” and
“establish[ing] clear policies for ownership, licensing, trade-secret
protections,” marking a significant departure from fifteen years of open
data policy that ensures that the fruits of taxpayer investment in data
are widely shared. Is Genesis the next great public research platform —
or the world’s most powerful gated environment? Without safeguards,
public compute and data could become de facto subsidies for the largest
AI labs and corporations.3. A National AI Effort Misaligned With Public
Needs-If the administration is committing to a once-in-a-generation
scientific moonshot, the target matters. The priority domains (critical
minerals, semiconductors, nuclear energy, quantum, “energy dominance,”
and national security) overwhelmingly reflect industrial strategy and
geopolitical competition. Notably absent are many of the issues that
most affect communities:Climate resilience and environmental
science,Public health,Agricultural sustainability, Housing, labor, and
social infrastructure,Research that would strengthen governance and
democratic institutions.Genesis is pitched as a breakthrough engine for
scientific progress. But its priorities suggest a narrower goal:
accelerating strategically valuable and commercially aligned science
rather than the work that would most directly improve people’s lives.Why
launch a national AI moonshot without aiming it at the problems the
public most urgently faces? Why These Questions Matter-The Genesis
Mission could transform U.S. scientific capability. But without public
oversight, broad access, and priorities rooted in societal need, it
risks becoming a centralized, closed, and strategically narrow system —
powerful enough to reshape science, but not necessarily in ways that

Administration (NNSA) is following through on President Donald Trump’s
directive to strengthen national security by rapidly advancing
artificial intelligence through the recently approved Genesis Mission.
Not all Americans are openly embracing rapid AI implementation.The
Genesis Mission, launched Nov. 24 through executive order, is another
step in the administration’s broader push for U.S. global technology
dominance predicated on aggressively pushing scientific discovery and
economic growth via AI‑accelerated innovation. The Trump administration
said the urgency will “require a historic national effort, comparable in
urgency and ambition to the Manhattan Project” that produced the
world’s first nuclear weapons during World War II.The NNSA, a
semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy that dates
back to the Atomic Energy Act of 1946, has issued a Request for
Information (RFI) titled "Transformational AI Capabilities for National
Security." The RFI is being used to execute national and international
goals by means including accelerating nuclear weapons development
timelines and enhancing nuclear nonproliferation efforts around the
globe.Officials say the RFI will receive input from a broad spectrum of
innovators that include cutting-edge AI model developers, cloud
environment providers, think tanks, universities and others with an end
goal “to foster long-term collaborations to integrate transformative AI
capabilities into NNSA’s critical operations.”“NNSA is at the forefront
of leveraging cutting-edge technology to safeguard our nation,” NNSA
Administrator Brandon Williams said in a statement. “President Trump’s
Genesis Mission provides a clear mandate, and we are responding with

broader initiative dubbed the “Presidential AI Challenge” that “seeks to
inspire young people and educators to create AI-based innovative
solutions to community challenges while fostering AI interest and
competency.”That includes early training in responsible AI use and tools
that the White House says will “prepare America’s students to be
confident participants in the AI-assisted workforce, propelling our
Nation to new heights of scientific innovation and economic
achievement.”“Students and educators of all backgrounds and expertise

administration has admitted that these myriad AI initiatives along with
the latest Genesis Mission will require “large amounts of organized and
high-quality data and significant computing power.”“With the Genesis
Mission, the Trump Administration is bringing the power of AI to bear on
our already expansive data infrastructure and creating a platform for
multiple Federal research agencies and the private sector to collaborate
to achieve breakthroughs currently thought impossible, and to win and
stay ahead in the AI race,” a White House fact sheet states.But not
everyone is on board with the broader and seemingly swift implementation
of AI on a national or even global scale. That includes portions of
Trump’s own voters and supporters.Residents in states including Oregon,
Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas have made headlines for either trying
to block or delay AI data center projects in their communities.Earlier
this year, Data Center Watch released a report covering the period
between May 2024 and March 2025—finding that $64 billion in U.S. data
center projects had been blocked or delayed by local opposition. They
have built a database that examines where pushback is taking place and
how the issue is taking hold in government filings, local media,

government should maintain rules for AI safety and data security, even
at the behest of slower implementation of AI capabilities.General trust
issues remain. That survey found that just 2% of U.S. adults “fully”
trust AI’s capability to make fair and unbiased decisions, while 29%
trust it “somewhat.” But distrust in AI was reported by roughly
six-in-10 respondents, with numbers slightly improving among AI users.
