RUSSIA,GERMANY, ARAB MUSLIMS COME AGAINST ISRAEL.
EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2
Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA)
the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy
against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against
thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and
Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I (GOD) will turn thee back, and put hooks into
thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee
forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with
all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields,
all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6
Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of
the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with
thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and
prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto
thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be
visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is
brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against
the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is
brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of
them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a
cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with
thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall
also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy
mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt
say,(RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) I will go up to the land of unwalled
villages;(ISRAEL) I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely,
all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12
To take a spoil,(OIL IS IN SPOIL) and to take a prey; to turn thine
hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the
people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle
and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

Dedan,(SAUDI-ARABIA) and the merchants of Tarshish,(SPAIN) with all the
young lions thereof,(ENGLAND,AND ALL ITS ASSOCIATES-CANADA,AUSTRALIA-NEW

take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and
goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY
RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14 Therefore, son of man,
prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my
people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15 And
thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many
people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a
mighty army:
16 And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel,
as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I
will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I
shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17 Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my
servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many
years that I would bring thee against them?
18 And it shall come to
pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel,
saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19 For in
my jealousy and in the fire (atomic bomb) of my wrath have I spoken,
Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20
So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the
beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth,
and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my
presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places
shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21 And I will
call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord
GOD: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22 And I will
plead against him with pestilence (biological, chemical, nuclear) and with
blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many
people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones,
fire, and brimstone.(NUKED,THEN MIGRATING BIRDS EAT RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS

23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I
will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am
the LORD.
EZEKIEL 39:1-29
1 Therefore, thou son of man,
prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord
GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech
(MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee
back,(RUSSIA-ARAB MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS) and leave but the sixth part of
thee,(5/6TH OR 300 MILLION DEAD RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS I BELIEVE) and will
cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee
upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4
Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,(
ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the
ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be
devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6
And I will send a shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto
Gog (RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley
of the passengers (EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN JORDAN VALLEY) on the east
of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there
shall they bury Gog (RUSSIAN) and all his multitude:(ARAB/MUSLIM HORDE)
and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(BURIEL SITE OF THE 300
MILLION,RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS)
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13
Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it
shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified,
saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual
employment,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to
bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth,
to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15
And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s
bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the
buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of
Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)(EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN
THE JORDAN VALLEY)
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.(OF THE ISRAEL-GOD HATERS)
17
And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every
feathered fowl,(500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS THREW ISRAEL EVERY
SPRING,FALL) and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and
come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do
sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel,
that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM
ARMIES)
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood
of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of
bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye (MIGRATING BIRDS
IN ISRAEL) shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be
drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for
you.(RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS)
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21
And I (GOD-JESUS) will set my glory among the heathen,(WORLD NATIONS)
and all the heathen (WORLD NATIONS) shall see my judgment that I have
executed,(AGAINST ISRAELS ENEMIES) and my (GODS) hand that I have laid
upon them.(ISRAELS HATER ENEMIES)
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
23
And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity
for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I
my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so
fell they all by the sword.
24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity
of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be
jealous for my holy name;
26 After that they have borne their shame,
and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when
they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27 When I
have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their
enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28
Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to
be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto
their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29
Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my
spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Israel says resuming Gaza ceasefire after deadly
attack on troops led to massive strikes-Washington said leaning on
Jerusalem to keep truce going, prevented it from halting aid deliveries,
as Witkoff and Kushner set to visit Monday to discuss second phase of
deal-By Emanuel Fabian,Nava Freiberg and Jacob Magid Today, 1:42 am-OCT
19,25
The IDF announced the resumption of the ceasefire in the
Gaza Strip on Sunday evening after a deadly attack on troops in the
southern Gaza Strip in the morning, and a subsequent wave of retaliatory
Israeli strikes had threatened to shatter the fragile truce.Washington
was said to have scrambled to intervene to prevent the US-brokered
ceasefire from falling apart, just over a week after it came into effect
on October 10.Two Israeli soldiers — Maj. Yaniv Kula, 26, and Staff
Sgt. Itay Yavetz — were killed and three others were wounded when
Palestinian terror operatives launched an attack on troops in the Rafah
area on Sunday morning. The IDF blamed Hamas for the attack, and
launched a wave of intense strikes against the terror group in
response. On Sunday night, however, the military announced that, “in
accordance with the directive of the political echelon, and after a
series of significant strikes, the IDF has begun renewed enforcement of
the ceasefire following its violation by the Hamas terror
organization.”It stressed that Israel would “continue to uphold the
ceasefire agreement and will respond forcefully to any
violation.”Israel’s announcement that it would return to upholding the
truce came after the military carried out strikes against 20 targets in
Gaza, which the Hamas-run civil defense agency said killed 45 people,
although the figures could not be verified and did not differentiate
between civilians and combatants.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held
consultations with Defense Minister Israel Katz and other senior
security officials in the wake of the deadly attack on troops in Rafah,
and decided that Israel would respond “fiercely” to the incident, while
still maintaining the necessary momentum to secure the return of the
remaining slain hostages from Gaza under the first phase of Washington’s
ceasefire framework, Channel 12 reported.“Israel does not want to bring
about the collapse of the ceasefire… There is simply a straightforward
equation of a violation and a response — and this will continue as long
as Hamas keeps violating the agreement,” a security official told the
network that-The same official also warned that the area between the
so-called Yellow Line — to which the military withdrew under the terms
of the current ceasefire — and the Egyptian border is “a hotspot for
potential escalation.”“It is ostensibly under Israeli control, but [in
underground tunnels that remain operative] Hamas terrorists are hiding —
trying to harass Israeli forces under cover of the ceasefire, even
without explicit orders from their commanders,” the official
said.Meanwhile, in Washington, officials within the administration of US
President Donald Trump were working to prevent the flare-up of violence
from collapsing the ceasefire entirely, the Axios news outlet reported,
citing US officials familiar with the developments.According to the
outlet, US special envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Trump
adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner spoke to Strategic Affairs Minister
Ron Dermer about the developments, and that Washington requested that
Jerusalem “respond proportionately but show restraint.”The appearance of
cracks in the ceasefire came ahead of a planned visit from Witkoff and
Kushner to Israel on Monday, and the expected arrival of US Vice
President JD Vance on Tuesday.A US official told The Times of Israel
that the three officials were expected to meet with Netanyahu and other
top Israeli officials during their visit to further advance Washington’s
framework for the Gaza ceasefire.Sunday’s violence was the most serious
incident in Gaza since the US-brokered ceasefire entered into effect on
October 10, halting two years of war that began with the devastating
Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.A senior Trump
administration official told Axios that Washington “knew this was
brewing.”According to the official, the US told Israel to keep its
actions directed at Hamas while pressing ahead with the ceasefire
plan.“We are now in charge of what’s going on in Gaza when it comes to
the implementation of the deal,” Axios quoted the US official saying.
“We are going to be calling the shots.”US officials told the outlet that
Washington had anticipated such clashes could happen in the early
stages of the ceasefire, and it now intends to significantly increase
its oversight of the plan to ensure it holds together.“The situation is
still really touch-and-go,” one official said.Disputes over aid
deliveries-Israel had also appeared to be mulling the cessation of aid
deliveries to the enclave in response to the deadly attack on IDF
troops, with a security official claiming that it would be halting all
deliveries “until further notice.”The official spoke on the condition of
anonymity, however, as no formal announcement had been made on the
matter. An Israeli official cited by several outlets said Israel had
“halted truck movement” into Gaza on Sunday, “due to intensive bombings
and dozens of casualties on the Hamas side.”Aid deliveries would “resume
once the bombings end,” the official said.Yet no formal announcement
regarding aid deliveries ever came, and an unnamed US official told
Axios that Israel had informed Washington it would reopen the crossings
into Gaza as planned on Monday morning. The news outlet said Washington
had not been informed in advance of Israel’s decision to close the
crossing. In a further indication of tension between Israel and the US
over the potential step of halting aid deliveries, an unnamed official
said that the political echelon had decided to allow aid to enter the
enclave after all, “due to American political pressure.”The ceasefire
and hostage release deal that entered into effect on October 10 required
Hamas to release the remaining 20 living hostages and return all bodies
of the 28 deceased hostages accessible to it within the first 72 hours
after the IDF’s withdrawal to the so-called Yellow Line inside
Gaza. While Hamas released the 20 living hostages within the first 72
hours, it has still yet to hand over the bodies of 16 deceased hostages,
saying that it cannot yet locate them due to the level of destruction
in the Gaza Strip.Israel has accused the terror group of lying, saying
it is intentionally withholding some of the bodies. In the second phase
of the ceasefire, as detailed in Trump’s 20-point plan for peace, Hamas
will be required to disarm and cede governance of Gaza to a technocratic
committee overseen by an international transitional body.No hard
timeline for Hamas disarmament-Trump, in an interview with Fox News
aired Sunday, reiterated that Hamas had “promised” it would disarm, but
acknowledged that there was no “hard” timeline for when it would do
so.“They promised they would,” Trump told Fox News when pressed on the
issue during the interview, conducted on Friday.WATCH IN FULL: President

Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) October 19, 2025“It’s not a hard
timeline, but it’s a line in my own mind,” he said. “At a certain point,
if they don’t do what they’re supposed to do, then we’ll have to do it
for [them].”He appeared to suggest that the US would be the one to go
into Gaza and disarm Hamas if it did not do so itself, but walked back
the claim when pressed further.“We won’t have boots on the ground,” he
clarified, adding that the forced disarmament could be done by “a proxy”
— Israel. While Trump’s 20-point plan does envision Hamas disarming, the
actual ceasefire agreement signed by Israel and Hamas in Egypt earlier
this month only focused on the initial IDF withdrawal, the
hostage-prisoner swap, and humanitarian aid provisions. The president was
also asked about Hamas’s execution of rival militia members in Gaza
since the start of the ceasefire, an issue on which he has made
inconsistent remarks in recent days.“[Hamas] said they were gang
members… But these are very violent people. This is a very violent part
of the world. Nobody’s seen violence like this,” he told Fox.Initially,
last Tuesday, the president claimed that he had given Hamas “approval
for a period of time” to carry out the killings, asserting that the
terror organization was targeting some “very bad gangs.”By Wednesday,
though, the commander of US forces in the Middle East called on Hamas to
immediately stop attacks on “innocent Palestinian civilians” and begin
“disarming without delay.”Hours later, Trump told CNN he was doing “more
research on it… It could be gangs plus.”Separately, the US president
appeared to allude to his widely repudiated and since-abandoned February
proposal to take over Gaza and permanently relocate its Palestinian
population, telling Fox that he initially wanted Egypt and Jordan, which
“have a lot of land… right next door,” to host the refugee
population. But his new plan, which, unlike his first, is favored by Arab
and Muslim leaders, abandons that idea and encourages Gazans to remain
in the Strip.“The whole thing is all rubble, so it’s not too hard to top
that, and we’d build houses… paid for by the wealthiest countries” in
the region, Trump said.Trump hailed the Arab leaders who have backed his
vision for Gaza, but reserved particular accolades for Qatar, which has
been a key mediator between Israel and Hamas for the past two
years.Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is a “fantastic man,” Trump
said, noting that “he’s in the middle of a very tough little area
because he’s sort of surrounded by every little problem.”“He has to play
it close to the vest a little bit,” Trump said, adding that Qatar was
“the one that’s most vulnerable because it [is] right next to Iran.”“But
they had great courage,” he said.Asked whether he had to lean on Qatar
to pressure Hamas to accept his ceasefire deal, Trump said, “I didn’t
have to make too much of a case because they are very smart people.”
Israel and Hamas accuse each other of breaching Gaza truce amid strikes, clashes.
Gaza
City, Palestinian Territories, Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-Gaza's
nine-day-old ceasefire came under strain Sunday after the Israeli army
said it launched air strikes in response to attacks it claimed were
carried out by Hamas militants against its forces.Hamas, however,
maintained it was adhering to the truce, with one official accusing
Israel of devising "pretexts" to resume its own attacks.Later on Sunday,
the military said in an online briefing that it launched strikes after
attacks in Rafah, southern Gaza, and in the northern town of Beit Lahia,
warning "there is a possibility of more strikes".Gaza's civil defence
agency, which operates under Hamas authority, said at least 13 people
had been killed across the territory. The Israeli military said it was
looking into the reports of casualties.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu earlier instructed security forces to take "strong action
against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip", his office said in a
statement, accusing Hamas of "a ceasefire violation".Defence Minister
Israel Katz then warned that the group would "pay a heavy price for
every shot and every breach of the ceasefire", adding Israel's response
would "become increasingly severe".The uneasy truce in the Palestinian
territory, brokered by US President Donald Trump and taking effect on 10
October, brought to a halt more than two years of devastating war
between Israel and Hamas. The deal established the outline for hostage
and prisoner exchanges, and was proposed alongside an ambitious roadmap
for Gaza's future but has immediately faced challenges in
implementation."Earlier today, terrorists fired anti-tank missiles and
opened fire on IDF (army) forces," in Rafah, the military said in a
statement."The IDF responded with air strikes by fighter jets and
artillery fire, targeting the Rafah area," the statement
said.Palestinian witnesses told AFP clashes erupted in the southern city
of Rafah in an area still held by Israel. One witness, a 38-year-old man
who asked not to be identified by name, said that Hamas had been
fighting a local Palestinian gang known as Abu Shabab but the militants
were "surprised by the presence of army tanks"."The air force conducted
two strikes from the air," he said.- 'Security illusion' -National
security minister and right-wing firebrand Itamar Ben Gvir urged the
army to "fully resume fighting in the Strip with all force".A statement
from Izzat Al-Rishq, a member of Hamas's political bureau, reaffirmed
the group's commitment to the ceasefire and said Israel "continues to
breach the agreement and fabricate flimsy pretexts to justify its
crimes".Hamas's armed wing insisted on Sunday that the group was
adhering to the ceasefire agreement with Israel and had "no knowledge"
of any clashes in Rafah.Under Trump's 20-point plan, Israeli forces have
withdrawn beyond the so-called Yellow Line, leaving them in control of
around half of Gaza, including the territory's borders but not its main
cities.Hamas in turn has released 20 surviving hostages and is in the
process of returning the remaining bodies of those who have died. The
war, triggered by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, has killed
at least 68,159 people in Gaza, according to the health ministry in the
Hamas-run territory, figures the United Nations considers credible. The
data does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but indicates
that more than half of the dead are women and children.Hamas's 2023
attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people, mostly
civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.-
Rafah crossing closed -On Sunday, Israel identified the latest two
bodies returned overnight as Ronen Engel and Thai farmworker Sonthaya
Oakkharasri.Engel, a resident of Nir Oz kibbutz, was abducted from his
home aged 54 and killed during the October 7 attacks, with his body
taken to Gaza.He was a photojournalist and volunteer ambulance driver
for Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross in the
southern Negev region.A farmworker at the Beeri kibbutz, Oakkharasri was
also killed in the attack on Israel. He had a seven-year-old
daughter.Israel returned the bodies of 15 Palestinians to Gaza on
Sunday, bringing the total number handed over to 150, the health
ministry in the Hamas-run territory said. The issue of hostage bodies
still in Gaza has become a sticking point in the ceasefire
implementation, with Israel linking the reopening of the main gateway
into the territory to the recovery of all of the deceased.Relief
agencies have called for the Rafah crossing from Egypt to be reopened to
speed the flow of food, fuel and medicines.Hamas has so far resisted
disarming and, since the pause in fighting, has moved to reassert its
control over Gaza. The group has said it needs time and technical
assistance to recover the remaining bodies from under Gaza's
rubble.Netanyahu's office said reopening Rafah would "be considered
based on how Hamas fulfils its part in returning the hostages and the
bodies of the deceased, and in implementing the agreed-upon framework,"
it said.Hamas warned late Saturday that the closure of the crossing
would cause "significant delays in the retrieval and transfer of
remains".
2 soldiers killed, 3 wounded in attack on troops in
Gaza; IDF launches wave of strikes on Hamas-21 said killed in
retaliatory strikes; major Hamas tunnel previously used to hold hostages
struck, elite Hamas Nukhba commander said killed; terror group says it
found body of hostage-By Emanuel Fabian and Nurit Yohanan 19 October
2025, 9:11 pm
The Israel Defense Forces announced on Sunday
evening that two soldiers were killed and three were wounded in an
attack by Palestinian terror operatives in Rafah during the morning
hours. The military launched a wave of intense attacks on Hamas in
response, with the violence leaving the fragile ceasefire teetering
after less than a week. The slain soldiers were named as Maj. Yaniv Kula,
26, and Staff Sgt. Itay Yavetz, 21. Both served in the Nahal Brigade’s
932nd Battalion and were from the central city of Modiin. Kula was a
company commander.Israel blamed Hamas for the attacks, saying it was “a
blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.” However, the terror group
said the incident occurred in an area under Israeli control, where they
claimed to have had no contact with their operatives for months.IDF
Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said troops would “remain on high
alert.“We are prepared and preparing for any scenario,” he said at a
handover ceremony for the president’s military secretary. The incident
took place at around 10:30 a.m., in southeastern Rafah, close to the
Salah a-Din Road. The area, east of the so-called Yellow Line, is under
IDF control as part of the ceasefire deal with Hamas.According to an
initial IDF probe, a cell of terror operatives emerged from a tunnel in
the area and fired RPGs at an excavator, killing the two troops. At the
same time, another excavator was hit by sniper fire, wounding two more
troops — heavy machinery operators — including one seriously and one
moderately.A short while after that, another soldier, also a heavy
machinery operator, was moderately wounded by sniper fire, according to
the army’s preliminary investigation. The terror operatives did not
attempt to abduct soldiers in the incident, the probe found. The troops
had been operating in the area — under Israeli control as part of the
ceasefire — to clear it of Hamas infrastructure, with the assumption
that gunmen could still be holed up in the terror group’s tunnels. It
marked the first deadly incident for the IDF in Gaza since the start of
the US-proposed ceasefire, which began just over a week ago, aimed at
ending two years of war.In response to the attack, the Israeli Air Force
and ground troops immediately carried out strikes in the area, hitting
tunnel shafts and other infrastructure used by Hamas.Later in the day,
the IDF carried out a wave of dozens of strikes in southern and central
Gaza, including against a major tunnel system previously used by Hamas
to hold hostages.Among the targets hit by fighter jets, drones, and
artillery shelling were weapon depots, cells of operatives who were
identified in “real-time,” and other infrastructure used by the terror
group, according to the military. The IDF said it also targeted Hamas
operatives and field commanders in central Gaza. Palestinian and Arab
media reported that a strike in central Gaza killed Yahya al-Mabhouh, a
commander in Hamas’s elite Nukhba Force. One airstrike carried out by
fighter jets, which involved over 120 munitions, hit a major Hamas
tunnel, spanning some six kilometers (some 3.7 miles), in the southern
Gaza Strip, the military said.According to the IDF, the tunnel was used
by Hamas for advancing attacks on Israel, and it was previously used by
the terror group to hold hostages. The Hamas-run Gaza Civil Defense
agency said that the strikes killed at least 21 people across the
territory. The figures do not differentiate between civilians and
gunmen. In another incident on Sunday, several armed terror operatives
were killed in a drone strike after they crossed the Yellow Line and
approached troops near northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya. The IDF said the cell
had “posed an imminent threat to the forces,” and therefore, “in
accordance with the agreement,” a drone strike was carried out against
the gunmen “to remove the threat.”The army published a video of the
strike.During the wave of strikes against Hamas, Israel temporarily
halted the entry of aid into the Strip, as a precautionary measure, not a
sanction, an Israeli official said. The aid was set to resume on Monday
morning as usual. The Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt, which was
set to open for the movement of Palestinians in both directions — not
for the entry of aid — as part of the deal, would continue to remain
closed until further notice, the official added.Meanwhile, Hamas
announced that a delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, a leader in the
terror group who resides outside the Strip, arrived in Cairo “to follow
up on the implementation of the ceasefire agreement — with the mediators
and with the Palestinian factions.”Earlier in the day, the military
wing of Hamas said it had found the body of another hostage during
ongoing search operations.“We will transfer the body today if the
conditions on the ground are suitable,” it said, adding that “any
Zionist escalation will complicate the search and digging operations and
the recovery of the bodies, which will lead to a delay in the
occupation’s receipt of the bodies.”With the bodies of two hostages
returned to Israel late Saturday, the number of bodies of captives still
held in the Strip now stands at 16, out of the 28 that were there at
the start of the current ceasefire. The hostage deal reached earlier this
month required Hamas to release the remaining 20 living hostages and
the deceased hostages accessible to it within 72 hours of Israel’s
October 10 withdrawal to the so-called Yellow Line inside Gaza.In
exchange, Israel has released nearly 2,000 Palestinian security
prisoners and detainees, including 250 terror convicts serving life
terms, plus the bodies of 15 Palestinians for every dead hostage
returned from Gaza.Hamas has said it would require additional machinery
to locate the remaining deceased hostages. Israel has accused Hamas of
lying, saying it can return almost all of the bodies.Agencies
contributed to this report.
Senior Hamas official: Terror group
can’t commit to disarm, is open to 3-5 year truce-Doha-based politburo
member says Hamas intends to maintain control of Gaza for ‘transitional
phase,’ defends summary executions; PM’s office: ‘No ifs, no buts’ on
disarmament-By Reuters and ToI Staff 18 October 2025, 5:24 am
DOHA,
Qatar – Hamas intends to maintain security control in Gaza during an
interim period, a senior Hamas official told Reuters, adding he could
not commit to the terrorist group disarming — positions that reflect the
difficulties facing US plans to secure an end to the war.Hamas
politburo member Mohammed Nazzal also said the terror organization was
ready for a ceasefire of up to five years to rebuild devastated Gaza,
with guarantees for what happens afterwards depending on Palestinians
being given “horizons and hope” for statehood.Speaking to Reuters in an
interview from Doha, where Hamas leaders have long resided, Nazzal
defended the terror group’s crackdown in Gaza, where it carried out
summary public executions on Monday. There were always “exceptional
measures” during war and those executed were criminals guilty of
killing, he claimed. While Hamas has broadly expressed these views
before, the timing of Nazzal’s comments demonstrates the major obstacles
obstructing efforts to cement a full end to the war started by the
Hamas-led October 7, 2023, terror onslaught against Israel, days after
the first phase of the ceasefire was agreed. They point to big gaps
between Hamas’s positions and US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza,
ahead of negotiations expected to address Hamas’ weapons and how the
enclave is governed.Asked for comment on Nazzal’s remarks, the Prime
Minister’s Office said Israel was committed to the ceasefire agreement
and continued to uphold and fulfill its side of the plan.“Hamas is
supposed to release all hostages in stage 1. It has not. Hamas knows
where the bodies of our hostages are. Hamas are to be disarmed under
this agreement. No ifs, no buts. They have not. Hamas need to adhere to
the 20-point plan. They are running out of time,” it said in a statement
to Reuters.Trump’s September 29 plan called for Hamas to immediately
return all hostages before committing to disarmament and ceding
governance of Gaza to a technocratic committee overseen by an
international transitional body.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
supported the plan, saying it would dismantle Hamas’s military
capabilities, end its political rule, and ensure that Gaza would never
again pose a threat to Israel. However, the ceasefire agreement signed by
Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and mediators in Sharm
el-Sheikh on October 9 does not address the disarmament of Hamas or
require the terrorist group to free all the deceased hostages it holds
before Israel released Palestinian prisoners.Pummeled by Israel in the
war, Hamas is under intense pressure to disarm and surrender control of
Gaza or risk a resumption of the conflict.Asked if Hamas would give up
its arms, Nazzal, speaking on Wednesday, said: “I can’t answer with a
yes or no. Frankly, it depends on the nature of the project. The
disarmament project you’re talking about, what does it mean? To whom
will the weapons be handed over?”He added that issues to be discussed in
the next phase of negotiations, including weapons, concerned not only
Hamas but other armed Palestinian groups, and would require Palestinians
more broadly to reach a position.Asked for its response to Nazzal’s
remarks, the White House directed Reuters to comments by Trump on
Thursday.“We have a commitment from them and I assume they’re going to
honor their commitment,” Trump said, noting that Hamas had returned more
bodies but without elaborating on the issue of it disarming or its
interim presence on the ground.Nazzal also asserted Hamas no interest in
keeping the remaining bodies of deceased hostages seized in the October
7 attack.Hamas has handed over at least nine out of 28 bodies. It was
encountering technical problems recovering more, he stated, adding that
international parties such as Turkey or the US would help search if
needed.A senior Turkish official said last week that Turkey would take
part in a joint task force along with Israel, the US, Qatar and Egypt to
locate the bodies.Hamas agreed on October 4 to release the hostages and
hand over governance to a technocratic committee, but said other
matters needed to be addressed within a wider Palestinian framework. It
released all living hostages on Monday.Nazzal said the phase two
negotiations would begin soon.Goals of elections, ‘hope’ for
Palestinians-On Tuesday, Trump said he had communicated to Hamas that it
must disarm or it would be forced to. Trump has also suggested Hamas
was given temporary approval for internal security operations in Gaza,
and has endorsed Hamas killing members of gangs.Noting Trump’s remarks,
Nazzal said there was an understanding regarding Hamas’s presence on the
ground, without specifying among whom, indicating it was necessary to
protect aid trucks from thieves and armed gangs.“This is a transitional
phase. Civilly, there will be a technocratic administration as I said.
On the ground, Hamas will be present,” he said. After the transitional
phase, there should be elections, he said.Nazzal said mediators had not
discussed with the group an international stabilization force for Gaza,
which was proposed in Trump’s ceasefire plan.Hamas’s founding charter
calls for the destruction of Israel, although the terror group’s leaders
have at times offered a long-term truce with Israel in return for a
Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.Israel
regards this position as a ruse.Nazzal said Hamas had suggested a
long-term truce in meetings with US officials, and wanted a truce of at
least three to five years to rebuild the Gaza Strip. “The goal isn’t to
prepare for a future war.”Beyond that period, guarantees for the future
would require states to “provide horizons and hope for the Palestinian
people,” he said.“The Palestinian people want an independent Palestinian
state,” he added.
Analysis-Hamas isn’t acting like a defeated
force, which puts the entire Gaza ceasefire at risk-Trump says Israel
won, but Hamas hasn’t returned most hostages’ bodies, refuses to disarm,
and attacks IDF troops; the only hope of Hamas compliance is the threat
of renewed war-By Lazar Berman-19 October 2025, 8:55 pm
Standing
in front of an adoring crowd at the Knesset last week, US President
Trump told Israel’s leaders that “you’ve won” in Gaza.“What a victory
it’s been,” he said in a speech that was maundering even for the
famously loquacious president.Speaking before Trump — hours after the 20
remaining living hostages were released by Hamas — Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu was only slightly less triumphant, boasting that
Trump’s plan “ends the war by achieving all our objectives.”“All of the
prime minister’s objectives have now been achieved,” his spokeswoman
had said three days earlier, as the ceasefire came into effect. There is
one problem, however. No one seems to have informed Hamas that it has
been defeated.Trump’s 20-point plan, if fully implemented, would indeed
spell an unmitigated victory for Israel and likely a fatal blow to any
Hamas plans to rule Gaza in the foreseeable future. But it is nowhere
near being fully implemented. Only two of the 20 clauses have been fully
carried out, both of them concessions by Israel. It released thousands
of Palestinian prisoners and gave up any potential plan to push Gazans
to emigrate.Hamas, on the other hand, seems determined to show that it
controls events on the ground. It has slow-rolled the release of the 28
slain hostages. By Sunday, it had handed over only 12, six days after
the end of the 72-hour window to give up all 28 bodies.Senior Israeli
officials mince no words in their rejection of Hamas — and White House —
excuses that the terror group is struggling to find or access the
remaining bodies. “We know, as a matter of fact, they can easily bring
back a significant number of dead hostages and give them back according
to the agreement,” said Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Thursday.
Defense Minister Israel Katz, a day earlier, instructed the IDF to
prepare plans to return to war if Hamas continues to avoid fulfilling
its obligations. Not about to step down-Hamas does not seem especially
bothered by such threats, whether they come from Jerusalem or
Washington.Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal told Reuters on
Saturday that Hamas would not commit to disarming, a central component
of Trump’s plan. This despite Trump’s threat that the terror group could
be dealt with “violently” if it refuses to give up its weapons.Hamas is
not trying to hide its weapons or its determination to violently
eliminate any opposition in Gaza. It has carried out public executions,
and its operatives have put uniforms back on, riding around Gaza in
pickup trucks brandishing rifles. This is not the behavior of a whipped
organization that is about to hand over power and give up
violence.Sunday’s deadly attack on IDF troops in Rafah was the logical
next step for Hamas. It had been testing how serious the Trump
administration was about the terms of the ceasefire, and how determined
he was to keep Israel from enforcing them by fire.Hearing the White
House make excuses for it, and seeing the IDF watching from behind the
new “yellow line” in Gaza, no one should be surprised that Hamas
continued to test the boundaries of the ceasefire.Trump’s repeated
declaration that “the war is over” has made that reality less likely to
emerge. He has signaled to Hamas that the threat of a renewed IDF push
into Gaza City is off the table, and that it has plenty of space to
maneuver before it risks paying a significant price.Leaving a coherent
Hamas organization inside of Gaza all but guarantees more conflict in
the Strip, and keeps Trump’s vision of an age in which “peace and
respect can flourish among the nations of the broader Middle East” a
distant dream.Hamas has shown time and again that it can suffer immense
damage and return stronger than it was before. It did so after Operation
Cast Lead in 2008, Operation Protective Edge in 2014, and the repeated
smaller operations in Gaza since the Israeli pullout in 2005.True, it
has never taken anything like the punishment Israel inflicted since its
October 7, 2023 invasion, but it remains armed, motivated, and the
strongest force in Gaza besides the IDF.There is a pathway to defeating
Hamas through the US-backed agreement, but it is a narrow one. It will
only work if Hamas understands that it has no wiggle room, and that any
violation will be met by military force. The White House is clearly
determined to maintain the ceasefire, and has taken the position until
now that keeping Israel from responding in force will make it more
likely for Hamas to be disarmed and toppled by other means. But that
fundamentally misreads what Hamas is and what it responds to.If there is
not a vigorous Israeli response, and a clear message from Trump that
the IDF is free to respond to further violations, Hamas will continue
pushing the bounds of the deal until it falls apart.“Peace through
strength,” Trump likes to say. There is no better time to prove that
adage.
Seven released hostages leave hospital, receive rapturous
welcome in hometowns-Cunio brothers speak of ‘new lives;’ Yavne streets
fill for David Cunio; Berman twins swamped; Maxim Herkin urges unity,
Elkana Bohbot signals heart; Yosef-Haim Ohana home at last-By Diana
Bletter-and Jessica Steinberg-19 October 2025, 4:14 pm
Seven
freed hostages were discharged from Sheba Medical Center on Sunday,
nearly a week after they were released from Hamas captivity as part of
the Gaza ceasefire.Crowds lining the streets gave joyful, hearty
welcomes to David and Ariel Cunio, Gali and Ziv Berman, Yosef-Haim
Ohana, Maxim Herkin, and Elkana Bohbot as they arrived at their
hometowns. In separate statements announcing their releases, the hospital
said the men will continue their outpatient treatment at the Returning
to Life Clinic, designed for hostages and their immediate families. The
seven were abducted on October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led
terrorists stormed southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people and took
251 hostages, sparking the Gaza war.Ohana, Herkin, and Bohbot, were
kidnapped from the Nova music festival; twin brothers Gali and Ziv
Berman were abducted by Hamas terrorists who overran Kibbutz Kfar Aza,
and David and Ariel Cunio were taken hostage from their homes in Kibbutz
Nir Oz.Hamas released 20 living hostages on Monday. Families of
returned hostages have said their loved ones described torture,
starvation, and long periods of isolation in captivity. The bodies of the
remaining 28 hostages who were killed on October 7 or died in captivity
were meant to follow, but thus far, Hamas has only returned 12 of
them.In a video announcing their release from the hospital, the Cunio
brothers jumped onscreen yelling, “boo!”“Hello to all our wonderful
nation, we were released from the darkness to the light,” said the
brothers, who hail from Kibbutz Nir Oz near the Gaza border. “We know
how much you worked for our release, and we want to thank each of you.
You went out in all kinds of weather. In the hardest moments there, we
felt you were fighting for us.”They spoke about how their new lives
“start now.”David Cunio promised his two daughters, Emma and Yulia, that
he would read them stories before bedtime and hug his wife, Sharon
Alony Cunio. The brothers thanked their parents and family, and then
Ariel Cunio thanked his “beloved” girlfriend Arbel Yehud, a former
hostage who was freed in January. But the most important thing, they
added, was to thank the IDF and Israeli security forces, and the
families who “paid the biggest price” in the war: “You are our
heroes.”They also spoke about the remaining hostages whose bodies
haven’t yet been released to Israel and said they will not stop fighting
“until the last hostage returns to us.”As David Cunio was driven from
the hospital to his family’s temporary home, the streets of the central
city of Yavne were filled with friends and neighbors holding Israeli and
American flags.Cunio leaned out of the car window to shake people’s
hands. His wife, a former hostage herself, has been living in Yavne with
her parents since she and their twin daughters were released from Hamas
captivity in November 2023.Locals leaned in to hug him and wish him well
as celebratory music played in the background and people clapped and
cheered, particularly when the Cunios got out of the car with big smiles
on their faces. The Berman twins were also swamped by large crowds
welcoming them at Kibbutz Beit Guvrin, home to their aunt, Macabit
Mayer, a prominent figure in the campaign to free the
hostages.Well-wishers carried Israeli flags and yellow hostage flags, as
well as banners of Maccabi Tel Aviv, their favorite soccer team. The
twin brothers leaned out of the car as it slowly drove down the street,
blowing kisses and waving at the crowd, clearly overwhelmed by the
attention. They sang with the crowd, calling out their thanks.“You guys
are crazy people!” said Gali Berman, “we have no words.”They held their
own hostage poster when it was pushed into their hands, taking photos
but deflecting most questions that were asked of them.“We love you, we
love you!” said Ziv Berman.Thousands waited for Herkin in his hometown
of Tirat Carmel where posters of his portrait were hung along streets
with the slogan “Welcome back Maxim the hero.”The municipality arranged a
welcoming ceremony where Herkin, visibly moved, took to the stage to
address the gathered crowds.“I am here because of all of you,” he said.
“I am out, I am free, I look up at the heavens, and I see a future for
me.”Herkin thanked those from the local community who had campaigned for
his return, telling them they are “all one big family and that it would
be sad if the unity was lost.“Don’t lose that unity, stay together.
Help one another,” he urged. His daughter Monica, five, who lives in
Russia with her mother, is expected to arrive in Israel next week to
meet her father, the Ynet outlet reported.Bohbot returned to Mevassert
Zion, where he lives with his wife Rivka and young son, Ra’am. There,
too, hundreds lined the streets of the Jerusalem suburb to welcome him
home. As he was driven through the crowds in a minibus, with his son
perched on his knees, Bohbot signaled a heart to the well-wishers using
his hands. To the sounds of drums and singing, the crowds called to raise
him up on their shoulders as young men in yarmulkes and white shirts
danced, their arms around one another. After Bohbot arrived at his
apartment, he appeared on the balcony and a rabbi spoke, asking Bohbot
to recite the Jewish prayer for survival.Bohbot tearfully repeated the
blessing after the rabbi, as his mother and wife stood next to
him.Ohana, who was badly injured during the Hamas attack, returned to
his home in Kiryat Malachi.Back at Sheba, Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Kalman
Ber arrived to visit other freed hostages who are still receiving
treatment. In a video shared by a Chief Rabbinate spokesperson, Ber was
seen singing and dancing in a circle with Bar Kupershtein and Segev
Kalfon, who were released from captivity on Monday.According to the
spokesperson, Kupershtein and Kalfon, who were both kidnapped at the
Nova festival on October 7, 2023, shared some of their experiences in
captivity with Ber.“We thank the Creator of the World for the return of
all the living hostages to their homes, and we bow our heads to the pain
of the families whose loved ones have not returned,” Ber said.“We all
have a national and moral duty to act until [all the slain hostages] are
brought to Israel for the proper burial they deserve,” he added.
'A
divorce' between Israel’s Jewish, democratic identities-Coalition
advances bill mandating mezuzahs, allowing Orthodox rituals in public
spaces-Bill sparks outrage at idea of foisting Jewish Orthodox practices
on public; proposed clause requiring religious tests for judges, giving
new powers to rabbinic courts dropped-By Ariela Karmel and Rossella
Tercatin 19 October 2025, 11:46 pm
A bill advanced by coalition
lawmakers on Sunday requires public institutions to install mezuzahs and
grants special protections to Jewish Orthodox religious practices in
public spaces, including criminalizing any interference with them, an
idea that sparked outrage among liberal critics.Several other
controversial elements, including a call to give rabbinical authorities
control over the selection of civic judges, were removed from the
bill.Public rituals such as laying tefillin (phylacteries) and prayer in
public spaces would legally protected according to the new legislation,
and any interference, even minor bureaucratic obstacles, might be
considered a criminal offense. Some of these practices have become
battleground issues, most notably in September 2023, less than a month
before the Hamas-led October 7 onslaught, when Orthodox worshipers
defied a municipal ruling and set up gender dividers at mass prayer
services in Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Square, sparking an angry response from
liberal activists and highlighting the deep societal tensions over
public expressions of religious practice and gender segregation. The bill
does not explicitly mention gender segregation, but its language,
including the protection of “Jewish prayer conducted according to the
worshipers’ tradition,” implies that gender-segregated prayer would be
legally protected if it aligned with the worshipers’ custom. Under the
proposed legislation, any disputes over these practices would be
resolved by the Chief Rabbinate, effectively giving it the authority to
enforce gender separation at religious events in the public square, and
codifying that authority into law.Previously, the Supreme Court ruled to
bar gender segregation in public places.Entitled “Realization of Jewish
Identity in the Public Sphere,” the bill was approved by the
Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Sunday, and will advance to the
Knesset for a preliminary reading. It would eventually need three more
plenum readings to become law.The most controversial clause of the bill
did not pass the ministerial committee. It had called for civil judges
to pass exams on halacha (Jewish law) in order to serve on the bench in
secular courts, and designated the Grand Rabbinical Court the sole
authority for disputes on the subject, leaving no avenue for appeal, and
apparently granting members of the Chief Rabbinate — who are not
experts in Israeli law — veto power over judicial appointments. While
rabbinical courts are part of Israel’s judiciary, handling many personal
legal matters such as divorce, wills and inheritances, and conversions,
they have no jurisdiction over civil courts.Non-Jewish religious courts
deal with family issues for other religions, respectively. While
Orthodox Judaism has long held a privileged status in Israel’s legal and
religious framework, the legislation would formally codify and expand
this authority, with apparently no parallel protections for non-Orthodox
branches of Judaism or for other religions. The implication of
legislation that would protect Jewish Orthodox practices is the
effective imposition of them on the public sphere. The bill makes no
reference to secular, non-Jewish, or non-Orthodox religious practices at
all.Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara expressed firm opposition to
the proposal, according to Hebrew media reports.Speaking before the bill
passed the committee, Orly Erez-Likhovski, the director of the Israel
Religious Action Center, told The Times of Israel that the bill seeks to
“turn the public sphere in Israel into an ultra-Orthodox one.”“It
stands in contradiction to Israel as a democratic country and the state
of all Jews,” she continued.“This legislation constitutes yet another
step toward Orthodox regulation of the public sphere in Israel and a
turning away from the global Jewish majority,” Shlomit Ravitsky Tur-Paz,
an attorney who serves as director of the Israel Democracy Institute’s
Center for Shared Society, told The Times of Israel. Tur-Paz has
frequently appeared before the rabbinic courts on issues of conversion,
marriage, and divorce. In a post on X, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid
responded, saying: “Of course I have a mezuzah in my home — and in my
office. I never thought there could be any other way. Until today. Until
I saw that this deranged coalition wants to force people by law to hang
mezuzahs.”He added that using the law to force religion upon the public
will have the opposite effect.“If religion needs the power of the state
to impose itself on citizens, people will rightly conclude that its
spiritual message is so weak and hollow that it must rely on force. The
scroll inside the mezuzah says, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with
all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might’ — no one
asked the government to add, ‘or you’ll get fined,’” he
quipped.Supporters of the bill say it is intended to protect Israel’s
Jewish character. The stated purpose of the legislation is “to ensure the
ability of the people of Israel to fulfill their obligation to express
their national and religious identity in their sovereign state, as
commanded by the Creator of the World, in accordance with the traditions
of their ancestors, and to exercise this right without fear of
interference or persecution by authorities, foreigners, or external
entities that impose laws or regulations not accountable to or serving
the needs and will of the citizens of the State of Israel.”Promoting the
legislation was Likud MK Galit Distel-Atbaryan, who chairs the
Subcommittee on Jewish Thought in the Education System and has
frequently disparaged non-Orthodox Judaism, most notably ejecting Labor
MK Gilad Kariv from a Knesset committee meeting in June after snapping
at the Reform rabbi, “The Jews here want to continue.”The bill was
co-sponsored by Likud MK Ariel Kallner and Otzma Yehudit MK Yitzhak
Kroizer, with the support of ultra-Orthodox parties, United Torah
Judaism and Shas. The bill was initiated by the Yachin Center, a
right-wing research institute that has long advocated for expanding the
authority of Israel’s rabbinical courts, according to a Channel 13
report.Opponents of the legislation warn that it threatens the
democratic character of the state, undermines liberal values, privileges
one stream of Judaism over others, and deepens divisions within Israeli
society.“As a rabbi and community leader, it saddens me to see such an
absurd legislative proposal. In the State of Israel, there is no doubt
that the public sphere is Jewish,” Rabbi Seth Farber, head of the ITIM
religious rights organization, told The Times of Israel. He added that
attempts to force religious ceremonies on the public will only harm the
status of Judaism.“I fully support furthering Judaism in Israel, but not
with a whip,” he continued. The religious rights organization, Hiddush,
said in a statement that the current government has “effectively
declared a divorce” between Israel’s Jewish and democratic identities,
though Israel’s Declaration of Independence guarantees freedom of
religion and conscience for all.

Trump threatens to send military to San Francisco.
Washington,
Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-Donald Trump threatened to send troops to San
Francisco, in an interview that aired Sunday, as he looks to push the
US military into more Democratic-controlled cities. The comments come as
the president has already sent National Guard into Los Angeles,
Washington and Memphis often against the wishes of local leaders, and as
judges have halted their deployment in Chicago and Portland."Next we're
going to go to San Francisco," he told Fox News."The difference is, I
think they want us in San Francisco. San Francisco was truly one of the
great cities of the world. And then 15 years ago, it went wrong."We're
going to go to San Francisco and we're going to make it great."Trump has
repeatedly exaggerated the extent of crime and unrest in US cities to
justify ordering deployments that have largely been opposed by local
Democratic leaders. He suggested late last month that American cities be
used as "training grounds" for the country's military forces. The first
deployment to Los Angeles, in June, came after sometimes unruly protests
over widespread immigration raids that critics said appeared to target
people based largely on their race or the language they were
speaking. That deployment was roundly criticized by California Governor
Gavin Newsom, who frequently butts heads with the Republican
billionaire, and who is widely expected to be a presidential candidate
in 2027.Trump's comments on San Francisco come after Marc Benioff, the
boss of San Francisco-based tech giant Salesforce apologized after
calling for the National Guard to be sent to the city.Benioff, a
one-time darling of the left, has shifted right in recent years, along
with other tech titans.Nevertheless, his support for a military
intervention in San Francisco sparked fury and a public backlash that
saw former friends distance themselves from him.San Francisco has a
particular place in the Republican worldview. The city, which has
well-documented problems with homelessness and drug addiction, features
frequently on right-leaning cable channels as an unparalleled example of
what they see as the demise of America's urban centers under Democratic
Party control.
Israel resumes Gaza strikes, accusing Hamas of violating truce deal.
Jerusalem,
Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-Israel resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip
on Sunday, after accusing the Palestinian militant group Hamas of
breaking a ceasefire and hostage release deal brokered last week."In
response to the blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement earlier
today (Sunday), the IDF (Israeli army) has begun a series of strikes
against Hamas terror targets in the southern Gaza Strip", the military
said in a statement.Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas and its
allies committed to releasing all remaining hostages they seized on
October 7, 2023. They have so far released all 20 surviving hostages,
but have returned only 12 bodies of the 28 dead hostages they still
hold, blaming difficulties in locating them under the rubble.Besides
failing to return all the hostages, Israel accuses Hamas of targeting
its troops in areas of the Gaza Strip where they are allowed to be
stationed under the deal, a claim that Palestinian militants reject. An
Israeli military official said that a first wave of strikes on Sunday
morning was in retaliation for at least three attacks against its
forces.According to the official, the army responded to "at least three
incidents in which Hamas fired towards our troops standing behind the
yellow line in the agreed-upon positions," referring to the line of
withdrawal of the Israeli army under the terms of the ceasefire. In two
incidents in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, Hamas allegedly opened
fire and launched a rocket-propelled grenade against Israeli troops,
some of whom were engineering forces "operating to dismantle terrorist
infrastructure in southern Gaza."The official said that troops were
stationed in areas behind the yellow line where the Israeli military is
allowed to manoeuvre under the terms of the truce. In a separate incident
in Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian militants crossed
the yellow line into Israel-controlled areas and were "eliminated in a
precise strike," the military official said.Hamas denied the accusations
it had attacked Israeli forces, saying it was adhering to the truce and
that Israel was devising "flimsy pretexts" to resume the
war.Palestinian witnesses told AFP that clashes erupted in Rafah, in an
area still held by Israel, between Hamas and a local Palestinian gang
known as Abu Shabab, supported by Israel.Following the strikes, Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Defence Minister Israel Katz and the
heads of the Shin Bet and Mossad security agencies, and "directed that
strong action be taken against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip,"
according to a statement from his office.
Gaza civil defence says at least 45 killed in Israeli strikes Sunday.
Jerusalem,
Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-Gaza's civil defence agency and hospitals
said a series of Israeli air strikes across the territory killed at
least 45 people on Sunday, updating an earlier toll of 33.The Israeli
military said it had struck dozens of Hamas targets across the Gaza
Strip, as both Israel and Hamas accused each other of violating the
nine-day-old ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump."At least
45 people were killed as a result of Israeli air strikes on various
areas of the Gaza Strip," Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for the civil defence
agency, which operates as a rescue service under Hamas authority, told
AFP.Four hospitals in Gaza confirmed the death toll to AFP, saying they
had received the dead and wounded.Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat reported
24 dead and 73 wounded from multiple strikes in central Gaza.Al-Aqsa
Hospital said it received 12 dead from nearby bombings, while Nasser
Hospital in Khan Yunis reported five dead, and Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza
City confirmed four fatalities.Earlier, Bassal detailed several of the
strikes. He said six people were killed when an Israeli strike targeted a
"group of civilians" in Zuwaida town in central Gaza.Six other people,
including children, were killed and 13 others injured in two separate
strikes near Nuseirat in central Gaza, Bassal said.A woman and two
children were killed when a drone strike hit a tent housing displaced
people near Asdaa City, north of Khan Yunis. Two people, including a
journalist, were killed and several others injured in an Israeli strike
in the western part of Zuwaida town in central Gaza.In another attack,
two people were killed and several injured when an Israeli strike hit a
tent in the Al-Ahli Club area in Nuseirat, central Gaza, Bassal said. Two
more people were killed in an Israeli air strike in eastern Jabalia,
northern Gaza Strip, he added. One individual was killed in a strike on
an apartment in a building in western Gaza City, the civil defence
agency said. The others succumbed later on Sunday to injuries received in
these strikes, Bassal said. The Israeli military told AFP it was
checking reports of casualties.Later on Sunday, the Israeli military
said it has resumed enforcing the ceasefire in Gaza.
China says US waged cyberattacks on national time centre.
Beijing,
Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-China on Sunday accused the United States of
conducting cyberattacks on Beijing's national time centre that could
have caused severe damage to critical financial and telecommunications
infrastructure.Beijing has stepped up espionage warnings in recent years
as relations with the United States and other Western nations have
worsened.Chinese authorities found "irrefutable evidence" of efforts by
the US National Security Agency (NSA) to hack the National Time Service
Center, between 2022 and 2024, according to a statement published on the
official Ministry of State Security WeChat account. The facility is
responsible for coordinating clocks around the country used by
everything from computer servers to train stations and power grids. The
ministry accused the NSA of exploiting weaknesses in the messaging
service of an unspecified foreign mobile phone brand in order to steal
login credentials from employees at the time centre. The attacks could
have jeopardised power grids, transport, and even space launches, the
ministry said.Chinese authorities have since "severed attack chains,
upgraded protective measures, and eliminated potential threats.""In
recent years, the United States has aggressively pursued cyber hegemony,
repeatedly trampling on international cyberspace rules," the ministry
said in its statement. It urged Chinese citizens to be vigilant of
foreign attacks and to report suspicious activity to the
authorities.Western countries have accused hacker groups allegedly
supported by China of conducting a global cyber espionage campaign
against figures critical of Beijing, democratic institutions, and
companies in various sensitive sectors.Washington said last year that a
China state-sponsored actor was behind a cyber breach at the US Treasury
Department.Beijing at the time called the accusations
"groundless"."Ironclad evidence proves that the United States is the
true 'hacker empire' and the greatest source of chaos in cyberspace,"
the Chinese Ministry of State Security said Sunday.
Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to 'immediate ceasefire' in Qatar talks.
Spin
Boldak, Afghanistan, Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-Pakistan and Afghanistan
agreed to an "immediate ceasefire" at talks in Doha, Qatar said Sunday,
after at least 10 Afghans were killed in Pakistani air strikes that
broke an earlier truce. For more than a week, the South Asian neighbours
have engaged in bloody border clashes -- their worst conflict since the
return of the Taliban government in 2021.A 48-hour truce briefly put a
stop to the fighting, which has killed dozens of troops and civilians,
until Friday's air strikes. After peace talks in Doha, Qatar's foreign
ministry said early Sunday that "the two sides agreed to an immediate
ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to consolidate lasting
peace and stability between the two countries".They also agreed to
follow-up meetings in the coming days to ensure the ceasefire, the
foreign ministry added.Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif
confirmed that a ceasefire agreement had been reached and said the two
sides would meet again in Istanbul on October 25."Terrorism on Pakistani
soil conducted from Afghanistan will immediately stop. Both
neighbouring countries will respect each other's sovereignty," Asif
posted on social media.Afghan Defence Minister Mohammed Yaqub said both
sides had "concluded that each country will respect the other"."(We)
will not violate the other's rights, will not support hostile actions
against the other, and no party or group will be allowed to harm the
security of the other country or attack it," he said. The defence
ministers posted a picture on X shaking hands after the signing.- 'No
interest' in conflict -Michael Kugelman, a leading South Asia analyst,
said "the Taliban have no interest in an all-out conflict that would pit
them against a vastly superior military force"."That gives them a
strong incentive to agree to a long ceasefire," he told AFP, though he
warned that the risks of escalation "remain high".Security issues lie at
the heart of the clashes.Since the Taliban returned to power, Pakistan
has witnessed a dramatic spike in militant attacks, mainly near its
2,600-kilometre (1,600-mile) border with Afghanistan.Analysts say
Islamist fighters have been emboldened by the neighbouring insurgency's
success following the withdrawal of US forces in 2021.Islamabad alleges
that hostile groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP),
operate from "sanctuaries" in Afghanistan, a charge the Taliban
government routinely denies.Kugelman said it was the Taliban's "lack of
action" on those alleged groups "that provoked Pakistani military
strikes and triggered the recent crisis".The cross-border violence
flared on October 11, days after explosions rocked Kabul during an
unprecedented visit by the Taliban's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi
to India, Pakistan's archrival. The Taliban then launched a deadly
offensive along parts of its southern border with Pakistan, prompting
Islamabad to vow a strong response.Ahead of the Doha talks, a senior
Taliban official told AFP that Pakistan had bombed three locations in
Paktika province late Friday, and warned that Kabul would retaliate.A
hospital official in Paktika told AFP that 10 civilians, including two
children, were killed and 12 others wounded. Three cricket players were
among the dead.Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on X that
their forces had been ordered to hold fire "to maintain the dignity and
integrity of its negotiating team".Saadullah Torjan, a minister in Spin
Boldak in Afghanistan's south, said: "For now, the situation is
returning to normal.""But there is still a state of war, and people are
afraid."stm-jma/mjw/rsc-X
Major California freeway shut amid US military live-fire exercise.
Los
Angeles, United States, Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-A major US freeway in
California was shut Saturday due to the US Marine Corps firing live
artillery over the roadway as part of ceremonies marking its 250th
anniversary, an event attended by Vice President JD Vance. The closure of
a 17-mile (27-kilometer) stretch of Interstate 5, which links Los
Angeles and San Diego, snarled traffic for hours and set off another
spat between California's liberal governor and Republican Donald Trump's
White House."The President is putting his ego over responsibility with
this disregard for public safety," said Governor Gavin Newsom, a
frequent Trump critic who is expected to make a White House run in
2028."Firing live rounds over a busy highway isn't just wrong -- it's
dangerous."Signs near the interstate warned on Saturday: "Live weapons
over freeway."The order to shut the freeway came after California
Highway Patrol officials warned that live munitions flying overhead
would distract drivers on the oceanfront stretch of Interstate 5 near
Camp Pendleton. In a statement, the Marine Corps insisted there was no
risk to the public."Artillery pieces have historically been fired during
routine training from land-based artillery firing points west of the
I-5 into impact areas east of the interstate within existing safety
protocols and without the need to close the route," it said in a
statement."This is an established and safe practice."The massive Marine
exercise featured fighter jet flyovers, amphibious ships, explosions in a
simulated village and Navy SEALS dropping into the Pacific Ocean from
helicopters. In his address, Vance said the Trump administration was
focused on supporting Marines and removing "woke" priorities that he
argued have weakened the US armed forces."When officials try to shift
focus to mandating diversity quotas, or they try to inject partisan
politics into the American armed forces, they impede the Marine Corps's
ability to do its best work."And that's why the secretary of war and the
president of the United States have stood so firmly against that crap,"
Vance, a Marine veteran, told the assembled troops. The Marine display
came the same day that millions took to the streets from coast to coast
in the United States to protest the hardline policies of the Trump
administration, which have included the dismantling of diversity and
equity programs. In June, Trump ordered National Guard troops to Los
Angeles to support federal officials in carrying out sweeping
immigration raids and to tamp down local protests. The deployment, which
also included hundreds of Marines, was criticized by Newsom and local
officials, who argued that the relatively small demonstrations could
have been easily handled by city and state law enforcement.
Work begins to repair Ukraine nuclear plant's power lines.
Vienna,
Oct 18 (AFP) Oct 18, 2025-Work has started to repair damaged power
lines to Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant after a lengthy outage,
following the establishment of local ceasefire zones, the UN's nuclear
watchdog said Saturday. The site, occupied by Russian forces since March
2022, lost its connection to the grid on September 23 for the 10th time
-- the longest outage of external power supply to the facility since
Russia invaded Ukraine.Repairs to the off-site power lines began after
the "establishment of local ceasefire zones to allow work to proceed",
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in a
post on X.The IAEA said that both sides had worked with the agency to
allow the "complex repair plan" to proceed."Restoration of off-site
power is crucial for nuclear safety and security," it said. The agency
said later it expected the work to take about a week. It had previously
said repairs were needed on both sides of the front line, several
kilometres from the plant. Both Russia and Ukraine confirmed the repair
works were ongoing.Since the outage, the largest nuclear power plant in
Europe has been powered by backup diesel generators. The IAEA says
safety has been maintained with reactors continuing to be effectively
cooled.Located near the city of Enerhodar along the Dnieper River, the
nuclear plant is close to the front line. Its six reactors, which
produced about one-fifth of Ukraine's electricity before the war, were
shut down after Moscow took control. However, the plant needs electricity
to maintain its cooling and safety systems to prevent a disaster. At the
beginning of October, Moscow claimed that the situation was "under
control" in Zaporizhzhia following concerns raised by Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelensky.Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused
each other of risking a nuclear disaster by attacking the site and have
blamed each other for the latest power outage.
Thousands of ‘No
Kings’ protest rallies held across US, drawing mockery from
Trump-Demonstrators march against what they see as US drift into
authoritarianism; Trump responds with AI videos of himself wearing
crown, dropping sewage on protesters-By MIKE PESOLI, Matt Brown and GARY
FIELDS 19 October 2025, 5:29 pm
WASHINGTON (AP) — Large crowds
of protesters marched and rallied in cities across the US on Saturday
for “No Kings” demonstrations decrying what participants see as the
government’s swift drift into authoritarianism under US President Donald
Trump.People carrying signs with slogans such as “Nothing is more
patriotic than protesting” or “Resist Fascism” packed into New York
City’s Times Square and rallied by the thousands in parks in Boston,
Atlanta, and Chicago. Demonstrators marched through Washington and
downtown Los Angeles and picketed outside capitols in several
Republican-led states, a courthouse in Billings, Montana, and at
hundreds of smaller public spaces.Trump’s Republican Party disparaged
the demonstrations as “Hate America” rallies, but in many places, the
events looked more like a street party. There were marching bands, huge
banners with the US Constitution’s “We The People” preamble that people
could sign, and demonstrators wearing inflatable costumes, particularly
frogs, which have emerged as a sign of resistance in Portland, Oregon. It
was the third mass mobilization since Trump’s return to the White House
and came against the backdrop of a government shutdown that not only
has closed federal programs and services but is testing the core balance
of power, as an aggressive executive confronts Congress and the courts
in ways that protest organizers warn are a slide toward
authoritarianism. In Washington, Iraq War Marine veteran Shawn Howard
said he had never participated in a protest before but was motivated to
show up because of what he sees as the Trump administration’s “disregard
for the law.” He said immigration detentions without due process and
deployments of troops in US cities are “un-American” and alarming signs
of eroding democracy.“I fought for freedom and against this kind of
extremism abroad,” said Howard, who added that he also worked at the CIA
for 20 years on counter-extremism operations. “And now I see a moment
in America where we have extremists everywhere who are, in my opinion,
pushing us to some kind of civil conflict.”Trump, meanwhile, was
spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.“They say they’re
referring to me as a king. I’m not a king,” the president said in a Fox
News interview that aired early Friday, before he departed for a $1
million-per-plate MAGA Inc. fundraiser at his club.A Trump campaign
social media account mocked the protests by posting a computer-generated
video of the president clothed like a monarch, wearing a crown and
waving from a balcony. In another AI video shared by Trump’s social media
accounts, the president, also wearing a crown, was shown flying a
fighter jet as it dumping sewage on crowds of protesters.Nationwide
demonstrations-In San Francisco, hundreds of people spelled out “No
King!” and other phrases with their bodies on Ocean Beach. Hayley
Wingard, who was dressed as the Statue of Liberty, said she, too had
never been to a protest before. Only recently she begun to view Trump as
a “dictator.”“I was actually OK with everything until I found that the
military invasion in Los Angeles and Chicago and Portland — Portland
bothered me the most, because I’m from Portland, and I don’t want the
military in my cities. That’s scary,” Wingard said.Tens of thousands of
people gathered in Portland for a peaceful demonstration downtown. Later
in the day, tensions grew as a few hundred protesters and
counter-protesters showed up at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement
building, with federal agents at times firing tear gas to disperse the
crowd and city police threatening to make arrests if demonstrators
blocked streets. The building has been the site of mostly small nightly
protests since June — the reason the Trump administration has cited for
trying to deploy National Guard troops in Portland, which a federal
judge has at least temporarily blocked.About 3,500 people gathered in
Salt Lake City outside the Utah State Capitol to share messages of hope
and healing after a protester was fatally shot during the city’s first
“No Kings” march in June. And more than 1,500 people gathered in
Birmingham, Alabama, evoking the city’s history of protests and the
critical role it played in the Civil Rights Movement two generations
ago.“It just feels like we’re living in an America that I don’t
recognize,” said Jessica Yother, a mother of four. She and other
protesters said they felt camaraderie by gathering in a state where
Trump won nearly 65 percent of the vote last November.“It was so
encouraging,” Yother said. “I walked in and thought, ‘Here are my
people.'”Organizers hope to build opposition movement“Big rallies like
this give confidence to people who have been sitting on the sidelines
but are ready to speak up,” Democratic US Sen. Chris Murphy said in an
interview with The Associated Press. While protests earlier this year —
against Elon Musk’s cuts and Trump’s military parade — drew crowds,
organizers say this one is uniting the opposition. Top Democrats such as
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Independent Sen. Bernie
Sanders are joining what organizers view as an antidote to Trump’s
actions, from the administration’s clampdown on free speech to its
military-style immigration raids.More than 2,600 rallies were planned
Saturday, organizers said. The national march against Trump and Musk
this spring had 1,300 registered locations, while the first “No Kings”
day in June registered 2,100.“We’re here because we love America,”
Sanders said, addressing the crowd from a stage in Washington. He said
the American experiment is “in danger” under Trump but insisted, “We the
people will rule.”Republican critics denounce the
demonstrations-Republicans sought to portray protesters as far outside
the mainstream and a prime reason for the government shutdown, now in
its 18th day. From the White House to Capitol Hill, GOP leaders called
them “communists” and “Marxists.” They said Democratic leaders,
including Schumer, are beholden to the far-left flank and willing to
keep the government shut to appease those liberal forces.“I encourage
you to watch — we call it the Hate America rally — that will happen
Saturday,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana.“Let’s see who
shows up for that,” Johnson said, listing groups including “antifa
types,” people who “hate capitalism” and “Marxists in full display.”Many
demonstrators, in response, said they were meeting such hyperbole with
humor, noting that Trump often leans heavily on theatrics such as
claiming that cities he sends troops to are war zones.“So much of what
we’ve seen from this administration has been so unserious and silly that
we have to respond with the same energy,” said Glen Kalbaugh, a
Washington protester who wore a wizard hat and held a sign with a frog
on it.New York police reported no arrests during the protests.Democrats
try to regain their footing amid shutdown-Democrats have refused to vote
on legislation that would reopen the government as they demand funding
for health care. Republicans say they are willing to discuss the issue
later, only after the government reopens. The situation is a potential
turnaround from just six months ago, when Democrats and their allies
were divided and despondent. Schumer in particular was berated by his
party for allowing an earlier government funding bill to sail through
the Senate without using it to challenge Trump.“What we are seeing from
the Democrats is some spine,” said Ezra Levin, a co-founder of
Indivisible, a key organizing group. “The worst thing the Democrats
could do right now is surrender.”Times of Israel staff contributed to

Rescues
and evacuations in Alaska after major typhoonMore than 1,000 people
have been airlifted to safety after their towns were washed away in the
aftermath of a powerful typhoon. In the aftermath of a destructive
typhoon, historic floodwaters have destroyed remote communities across
western Alaska, forcing hundreds of evacuations that could continue for
days, officials said.Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy toured the damage in
Kipnuk and Kwigillingok on Friday, telling reporters, "Kipnuk's in bad
shape. It’s a disaster area. Homes are tossed everywhere. It looks like a
blast radius because of the surge and the wind."He added, "There’s a
handful of people still there, trying to get aspects of the village back
together."The devastating floods were fueled by remnants of Typhoon
Halong, which originated in the northern Philippine Sea on Oct. 5.The
typhoon brought massive flooding to Alaska, sweeping across the west
coast of the state on Monday and dumping more than 6 feet of water in
some areas. Along with coastal flooding, wind gusts reached 50 to 100
mph in some of the 49 communities affected."This is still a very much
fluid situation; we are still in the process of evacuating hundreds of
people from the affected towns," Michelle Torres, the outreach branch
chief for the state of Alaska, told ABC News on Thursday.Remote, coastal
towns have been hit the hardest by the floods. Hundreds of Alaskans
have been evacuated by the Alaska National Guard, according to Jeremy
Zidek from the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency
Management.Dozens rescued in Alaska after remnants of Typhoon Halong
batter regionThe evacuations of these flooded-out, smaller communities
will continue "for days," Zidek said. Both local agencies and private
charters are being used for the evacuations, Zidek said.At least one
person has died from these floods, with two people remaining missing,
officials said.Photos from the Alaska National Guard show around 300
displaced individuals taking shelter in a C-17 aircraft."Through it all,
we stand shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors, evacuating those
displaced, flying supplies and lending a helping hand wherever it's
needed most," the Alaska National Guard said in a statement on Friday. At
least 2,000 people from rural Alaska have been displaced, according to
the Alaska Community Foundation."Alaskans have already come together to
raise more than $1 million in support - and the fund is still growing,"
the Alaska Community Foundation said in a news release.Homeland Security
Secretary Kristi Noem said on Thursday that the U.S. Coast Guard has
rescued 38 people from the flood and helped "evacuate 28 people from a
temporary shelter."Glacier lake outburst at Alaska's Mendenhall Glacier
causes record-breaking flooding"The Coast Guard continues to support the
state of Alaska's response efforts in impacted communities," Noem said
in a post on X on Thursday.Dunleavy said he signed an application for a
Presidential Disaster Declaration, asking President Donald Trump to
"declare a major disaster for Alaska" as a result of this storm.Dunleavy
previously declared a state of emergency for "all areas impacted or
threatened by these storms."Alaska previously experienced major flooding
in 2023 when a glacier lake outburst occurred on the Mendenhall
Glacier, located about 12 miles north of Juneau, Alaska. The 2023
flooding destroyed homes situated along the river, with decades' worth
of erosion happening in one weekend, according to the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration.ABC News' Matt Gutman and Julia Jacobo

Lightning strikes can exempt airlines from compensation: EU court by AFP Staff Writers.
Vienna
(AFP) Oct 16, 2025-The EU's top court ruled Thursday that a lightning
strike on an aircraft may qualify as an "extraordinary circumstance"
that may exempt airlines from compensation for long delays or
cancellations. An Austrian court referred the case to the Court of
Justice of the European Union, in which a passenger sought to claim
compensation from Austrian Airlines. The passenger arrived with a delay
of more than seven hours from Romania to Austria after the aircraft the
traveller was supposed to take was hit by lightning and had to be
replaced.Lightning "constitutes an extraordinary circumstance which may
relieve the airline of the obligation to pay compensation... where it
leads to mandatory safety inspections," the court said in a statement on
the ruling. It said it was up to the Austrian court to assess if the
airline took "all reasonable measures" to avoid the extraordinary
circumstances. In 2017, the court classified a collision with a bird as
"extraordinary circumstance".
