Trump
won't intervene, but opposes Gaza annexation — report-Gaza takeover
plan said set to last 4-5 months, focus on Gaza City, Strip’s
center-Security cabinet expected to okay phased proposal despite top
generals’ warnings this would endanger hostages; it would drive a
million Palestinians southward, while boosting aid By Nava
Freiberg,Michael Bachner and Emanuel Fabian-Today, 5:30 am-AUG 7,25
Israel
was expected Thursday to approve a phased plan to conquer vast new
areas of the Gaza Strip, potentially over five months, newly displacing
around a million Palestinians and despite warnings from top military
officials that this would endanger the lives of hostages being held in
those areas, according to various Hebrew media reports Wednesday. The
plan is reportedly aimed at destroying what remains of the Hamas terror
group and pressuring it to free the 50 hostages it is still holding,
around 20 of them alive, after recent talks for a deal broke down. It
would begin with taking over Gaza City and camps in the central Strip,
driving around half of the enclave’s population southward toward the
Mawasi humanitarian zone.Despite a few ministers potentially opposing
the plan, multiple reports said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would
likely secure a majority within the high-level security cabinet to
support the plan when it convenes at 6 p.m. Thursday.During a three-hour
security discussion among a smaller group on Tuesday, Netanyahu was
presented with several options for continued military operations in the
Gaza Strip by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. The plan’s reported
content-The plan reportedly focuses initially on seizing Gaza City and
expanding aid distribution centers in coordination with the United
States.According to Channel 12 news, in the plan’s first phase, Israel
would issue an evacuation notice to the residents of Gaza City —
estimated to number around 1 million people, roughly half the Strip’s
population — to allow time for the establishment of civilian
infrastructure in central Gaza, including hospitals and camps for
evacuees. This phase is expected to last several weeks.Israel would then
launch a military offensive in the second phase, during which US
President Donald Trump is expected to deliver a speech announcing the
acceleration of humanitarian aid in coordination with Israel, the report
continued.US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee told Bloomberg News
Wednesday that there was a push to quickly add 12 aid sites to the four
currently operated by the Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian
Foundation.“A quadrupling over two months, if possible. It’s all about
funding,” Huckabee said, signaling that this would be coordinated with
IDF military advancements: “I think there’s still some question about
areas of the north that may depend on whether the IDF can clear those
areas and make it safe.”The expansion would be funded by approximately
$1 billion in donations from the US and other countries, Channel 12
said, adding that the goal would be to enable Gazans to access aid that
bypasses Hamas while Gaza City falls under Israeli control.Reports by
the Ynet news site, the Kan public broadcaster and Channel 13 news said
the military campaign was expected to last between four and five months
and involve four to five IDF divisions. Kan reported that in addition to
Gaza City in the Strip’s north, the plan was to expand to the camps in
central Gaza, where the IDF has barely maneuvered so far.The civilian
population is expected to be further pushed toward the southern Strip,
while maneuvers take place in areas where hostages are believed to be
held, with efforts toward avoiding any harm to them.Kan added that
mediators Egypt and Qatar were pressuring Israel — via the US — not to
implement the plan, while also urging Hamas to resume negotiations. The
broadcaster cited unnamed security sources as saying the goal was to
quickly push more Gazans toward the southern Mawasi zone, in hopes this
would serve the stated plan to encourage emigration from Gaza. The plan’s
goals were also said to include pressuring Hamas to free the remaining
hostages. Kan cited an Israeli official, however, as estimating the
chances of Hamas returning to the negotiation table before the plan is
approved to be “almost zero.”According to Channel 12, another goal is to
possibly align with a proposed US-led framework for a comprehensive
deal. While Israel may pause operations if that framework advances,
officials see it as unlikely, the network said.By the end of the cabinet
meeting, Netanyahu is expected to seek a mandate to authorize himself
and Defense Minister Israel Katz to make operational decisions,
including phased steps. An alternative plan on the table, according to
Kan, is to encircle Gaza City and the central Gaza camps, block aid to
those areas and launch pinpoint raids, rather than full conquest, aiming
to wear Hamas down. The downside would be that it would take time, but
security officials were cited as saying this could be an initial step
before taking over the areas. Netanyahu has reportedly shot down this
plan.According to Channel 13, Shas party leader Aryeh Deri is expected
to take part in the meeting, and while he and Foreign Minister Gideon
Sa’ar are leaning toward opposing the full takeover plan, analysts
expect Netanyahu to have a majority in favor of approving it.Trump not
opposed to plan, though IDF chief is-Trump said this week that the
question of taking over all of Gaza was “pretty much up to Israel,”
indicating that he would not interfere in Jerusalem’s decision-making on
the matter. The Axios news site cited an unnamed US official Wednesday
as affirming that Washington was indeed not planning to intervene,
adding that a recent Hamas propaganda video — showing hostage Evyatar
David emaciated and forced to dig what may become his own grave —
influenced Trump to make the decision “to let the Israelis do what they
need to do.”The official added, however, that the Trump administration
does not support the idea of Israel annexing parts of the Gaza
Strip. However, many reports in recent days have said Zamir and other
military officials have warned against the plan for the full occupation
of Gaza, with Channel 12 quoting Zamir as saying in closed-door
meetings: “Occupying the Strip would drag Israel into a black hole —
taking responsibility for two million Palestinians, requiring a
years-long clearing operation, exposing soldiers to guerrilla warfare
and, most dangerously, jeopardizing the hostages.”A senior security
official also cautioned to Channel 12 that Israel “could end up
knowingly entering a Vietnam model” — a reference to the US getting
bogged down in a years-long, costly military campaign that yielded
limited results during the Vietnam War.Military officials also believe
that if Israel proceeds with the plan, it will lead to heavy casualties
among Israeli troops, the Kan public broadcaster reported earlier
Wednesday. The defense officials estimate that “dozens” of soldiers could
be killed, and a large number would be wounded in the operation, Kan
reported. Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza
and in military operations along the border with the Strip stands at
459. The toll includes two police officers and three Defense Ministry
civilian contractors.Possibly alluding to the tension between Zamir and
Netanyahu over the reoccupation plan, Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor, the chief of
the IDF Southern Command, appeared to confirm Wednesday that there are
“disagreements” in the military’s top brass.A report earlier in the day
by the Yedioth Ahronoth daily accused the general of sparring with the
head of the Air Force during a recent meeting on Gaza.“The fighting in
Gaza is often accompanied by tension, and sometimes there are
disagreements between various parties,” Asor said during a ceremony for
the fallen soldiers of the 401st Armored Brigade, in a video released by
the IDF.“It’s important for me to say clearly: these are disagreements
with the best of intentions. These are substantive and professional
discussions, driven by the sincere desire of all IDF commanders to do
what is right for the security of the State of Israel,” he
said.According to the Yedioth report, during a video call meeting some
10 days ago, Asor demanded that Israeli Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Tomer
Bar stop overturning his decisions to carry out strikes in Gaza.Bar,
according to the report, had intervened in strikes after increasing
reports of civilian casualties in the Strip since March, which has led
to growing tension between him and Asor.Asor, in the meeting, lashed
out, reportedly saying to the other generals: “You there in Tel Aviv are
disconnected from the [what is happening] on the ground.”Cairo slams
Israel over aid crisis-Meanwhile Wednesday, Egypt’s foreign minister, on
a visit to Greece, described the international response to the
escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza as shameful, and urged powerful
Western nations to increase pressure on Israel.“The international
community should be ashamed of the tragic situation unfolding in Gaza
and the devastating actions being carried out by Israel,” Egyptian
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told reporters in Athens.“What is
unfolding is a human tragedy, and the suffering witnessed is a stain on
the conscience of the international community,” he said. The Egyptian
minister described Israel’s military campaign in the territory as a
“systematic genocide,” reiterating his government’s position that it
“firmly rejects any displacement of the Palestinian people from their
ancestral lands.”The ongoing war erupted after the Hamas-led October 7,
2023, massacre, in which some 5,600 terrorists invaded the country,
killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages to
Gaza. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 60,000 people in
the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far,
though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between
civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants
in battle as of January and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel
during the October 7 onslaught.Israel has said it seeks to minimize
civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as
human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals,
schools and mosques.Times of Israel staff and AP contributed to this
report.
Opposition says PM wants Zamir to be a 'rubber

even if hostages harmed-Meeting comes as PM’s loyalists launch attacks
on IDF chief Zamir for reportedly objecting to IDF fully occupying the
Strip, PM’s son implies he’s leading a coupBy Nava Freiberg,Emanuel

Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with senior security officials on
Tuesday to hammer out Gaza war plans, and reportedly came out in favor
of the military taking control of the entire enclave, even if it meant
that the remaining hostages could be harmed or executed by Hamas. The
meeting came amid multiple reports of rising tensions between the prime
minister and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir over the prospect of
Israeli forces fully occupying the enclave. The Prime Minister’s Office
said in a brief statement that Netanyahu “held a limited security
discussion today that lasted about 3 hours, in which the chief of staff
presented the options for continuing the campaign in Gaza.”“The IDF is
prepared to implement any decision made by the security cabinet,” the
statement added, an apparent reference to reported opposition from the
IDF chief to plans to reoccupy Gaza, following the apparent breakdown of
hostage-ceasefire talks with Hamas in recent weeks. The meeting aimed to
finalize a plan to present to a broader cabinet session later this
week, according to reports in multiple Hebrew outlets.Others attending
Tuesday’s meeting included Defense Minister Israel Katz, Strategic
Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and IDF Operations Directorate head Maj.
Gen. Itzik Cohen.Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir
and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich — both ardent advocates of a
complete Gaza takeover by Israel — were excluded from the meeting,
Israel Hayom reported.Netanyahu reportedly told ministers this week that
he will seek cabinet backing for a plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip,
despite objections from within the IDF. Zamir was said to have opposed
the plan, sparking anger against the IDF chief from Netanyahu loyalists,
with unnamed senior officials calling on him to resign if he didn’t
like his orders.Hostage families and their supporters rally at Hostages
Square in Tel Aviv on August 2, 2025. Following the meeting, an unnamed
source familiar with the talks told the Kan public broadcaster that
Netanyahu is heavily leaning toward occupying the Palestinian enclave.
Other Hebrew-language news outlets, including Ynet and i24 News, carried
similar reports, all quoting anonymous sources. One source told Kan that
the government is aware that the military campaign to gain full control
over Gaza will likely endanger the remaining hostages, of whom 20 are
believed to be alive. The report said that the IDF and the defense
establishment remain opposed to the plan, in part because it puts the
hostages in danger of being executed by their captors should troops
approach where they are being held. The IDF currently holds control over
approximately 75 percent of the Gaza Strip, but under the new plan, the
military would be expected to occupy the remaining territory as well,
bringing the entire enclave under Israeli control. The military has
largely refrained from operating in certain areas where it is believed
that the hostages are held. Hamas has repeatedly said it will execute
them if it believes Israeli forces are closing in.It is also unclear
what such a move would mean for the Strip’s millions of civilians and
humanitarian groups operating in the enclave.Earlier Tuesday, reports of
Zamir’s reluctance drew sharp condemnations from the far-right and
Netanyahu loyalists, including his son.Ben Gvir urged Zamir to publicly
commit to carrying out the orders of elected officials, even if they
decide on the occupation of the Strip“The chief of staff must say
clearly that he will fully carry out the orders of the political
echelon, even if it’s decided to go for full conquest and a clear
result,” Ben Gvir said in a post on X.Netanyahu’s eldest son, Yair, also
took to social media from his home in Miami to lambaste Zamir in a
series of posts on X, and implied the IDF chief was trying to lead a
military rebellion against his father. He claimed Zamir was only
appointed to his position because Defense Minister Katz insisted on the
choice. He also seemed to imply that Zamir secretly dictated a post on X
by Yedioth Aharonoth military correspondent Yossi Yehoshua, in which
the journalist criticized Netanyahu’s reported plan to occupy Gaza.“If
Netanyahu really is interested in making the really dramatic and
divisive decision among the Israeli public — the occupation of Gaza City
and the central camps — he needs to stand before the nation, clarify
the expected price to the lives of the hostages and soldiers who will
fall, and declare that he takes full responsibility, despite the IDF’s
opposition,” Yehoshua wrote.Yair Netanyahu replied: “If whoever dictated
to you that tweet is who we think, this is a rebellion and attempted
military coup fit for a banana republic in Central America during the
70s. This is completely criminal.”And even the defense minister appeared
to issue a veiled attempt to pressure Zamir into backing down.“Once the
political leadership makes the necessary decisions, the military
echelon, as it has done in all fronts of war so far, will professionally
implement the determined policy,” Katz said during a visit to an IDF
post in the Gaza buffer zone on Tuesday. “My role as the defense
minister in charge of the IDF is to ensure that this will be the case,
and that is what I will do.”Katz said he had formulated his positions
“regarding the security and political steps Israel must take to ensure
the achievement of the war’s objectives,” and would present them to
Netanyahu and cabinet ministers at the meeting later in the day.Speaking
publicly, during a meeting with new recruits to the IDF’s Armored Corps
and Combat Engineering Corps at the main military induction base in
central Israel, Netanyahu reiterated the three stated aims of the war,
without mentioning the prospect of conquering Gaza entirely. He told
troops that there is “still a need to complete the defeat of the enemy
in Gaza, to release all our hostages and to ensure that Gaza is no
longer a threat to Israel.”Zamir, however, received support from the
opposition and from Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, the sole government
minister to back him publicly.“The chief of staff is required to express
his professional opinion clearly and unequivocally to the political
echelon. I am convinced that he will do so,” Saar wrote on X. “He is not
required to clarify the subordination of the military echelon to the
government’s decisions.”Reports of Netanyahu’s dispute with Zamir
prompted objections from Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, who insisted that
such disagreements must remain “behind closed doors.”“IDF soldiers
should not think that a divided and conflicted leadership is leading
them, that the political echelon does not respect their commander, that
they are selling them out for a headline,” Lapid wrote on X.He added
that an “operational price” exists for such leaks, since they could
dissuade the IDF chief from voicing his opinion if he thinks it may make
it to the press.Blue and White-National Unity chairman Benny Gantz
condemned cabinet ministers’ “unrestrained attacks” against Zamir.“In
the State of Israel, the chief of staff is subordinate to the political
echelon, as it has always been and will be, but he is not a puppet on a
string or a rubber stamp,” Gantz posted. “Instead of threatening and
whining, perhaps it’s worth internalizing: The problem lies with the
political echelon, not the military one.”The war began with the
Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which killed some 1,200
people and took more than 250 hostage. Since then, the Hamas-run Gaza
health ministry says more than 60,000 people in the Strip have been
killed or are presumed dead in the fighting, though the toll cannot be
verified and does not differentiate between civilians and
fighters.Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants in battle as
of January and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during the October
7 onslaught. Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities
and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting
from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools, and
mosques.Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and
in military operations along the border with the Strip stands at 459.
The toll includes two police officers and three Defense Ministry
civilian contractors.
Police bar Jerusalem’s grand mufti from
Temple Mount for 6 months, his lawyer says-Attorney for capital’s top
Muslim cleric says ban is over sermon about Gaza delivered at flashpoint
holy site, asserts it contained ‘nothing inappropriate’; police do not
comment-By AFP and ToI Staff Today, 1:48 am-AUG 7,25
Police have
banned Jerusalem’s top Muslim cleric from entering the Temple Mount
compound for six months over a recent sermon, according to his
attorney.Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, the grand mufti of Jerusalem, will be
prevented from entering the holy site, known to Muslims as the Al-Aqsa
Mosque compound, until January 2026, lawyer Khaldoun Najem told AFP.He
was barred over a Friday sermon he gave at Al-Aqsa in late July, which
Najem contended “contained nothing inappropriate.”The Palestinian
Authority’s official news agency WAFA said the sermon had focused on
deteriorating conditions in Gaza and featured claims that Israel is
pursuing a policy of starvation in the war-torn territory amid the
ongoing war, sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, massacre.Police had
already issued an eight-day ban against Hussein following that sermon,
according to the outlet.Najem said police “did not interrogate” or hold a
hearing for the mufti prior to the decision.Police did not respond to a
request for comment by The Times of Israel. The Temple Mount is
Judaism’s holiest site, and its Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islam’s third-holiest
site and a frequent rallying point for Palestinian nationalists, making
it a frequent flashpoint for tensions between Israelis and
Palestinians.Earlier this month, National Security Minister Itamar Ben
Gvir led morning prayers on the Temple Mount during the Jewish fast day
of Tisha B’Av—a contentious move that violated a long-standing, vague
status quo governing the site, which is administered by a Jordanian
religious trust, with the Israel Police in charge of security.A growing
number of right-wing Israeli Jews have been protesting the ban on Jewish
prayer, viewing it as religious discrimination and urging the
government to permit it and allow Jews greater access. While Muslims can
enter the site at all hours of the week, Jews and tourists can do so
only for several hours on weekdays, with overtly religious Jews being
taken on a predetermined route while closely supervised by police. While
Ben Gvir has repeatedly visited the site and declared that it is his
policy to permit Jewish prayer, and while police have increasingly
tolerated Jewish prayer there under his watch, Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu has insisted that Israel doesn’t seek to change the status
quo.Changes to the Temple Mount’s status quo evoke strong emotions and
are frequently cited as a motivation for Palestinian terror attacks. The
site is of central importance to Hamas, which termed its October 7
massacre “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.” Jordan has threatened in the past to
nix its peace treaty with Israel if the status quo is changed.
In
symbolic move, Slovenia bans West Bank settlement imports over war in
Gaza-Meanwhile, ethics watchdog for Norway’s sovereign wealth fund says
it should have considered divesting from firm servicing Israeli fighter
jets-By Agencies 6 August 2025, 11:58 pm
Slovenia on Wednesday
announced a ban on imports of goods from settlements in the West Bank,
in a “symbolic measure” designed to ratchet up diplomatic pressure over
the war in Gaza.Slovenia’s government has frequently criticized Israel
over the conflict, and last year moved to recognize a Palestinian state
as part of efforts to end the war against Hamas in Gaza as soon as
possible.“The actions of the Israeli government… constitute serious and
repeated violations of international humanitarian law,” the Slovenian
government said in a statement on Wednesday.Slovenia “cannot and must
not be part of a chain that enables or overlooks” such violations, which
it said includes the “construction of illegal settlements,
expropriations, the forced evictions of the Palestinian population.”The
Slovenian government thus decided to “ban imports of goods originating
from Israeli illegal settlements.”Its latest move represents a “clear
reaction to the Israeli government’s policy, which… undermines the
possibilities for lasting peace and a two-state solution.”“While
symbolic,” the ban “is a necessary response to the ongoing humanitarian
and security situation in Gaza,” Slovenia’s Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon
said of the measure. The government said it was also examining a ban on
exports of goods from Slovenia “destined for (the) illegal settlements,”
saying that it would then “decide on further measures.”According to the
STA news agency, citing a government statement from January, Slovenia
did not import any goods from Israeli settlements in 2022 and 2024,
respectively.In 2023, imports amounted to some 2,000 euros.Slovenia
announced it would ban all weapons trade with Israel over the war in
Gaza, in what it said is a first by a European Union nation.Early in
July, Slovenia was the first EU country to ban two far-right Israeli
ministers, Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, from entering the
country. It declared both Israelis “persona non grata,” accusing them of
inciting “extreme violence and serious violations of the human rights of
Palestinians” with “their genocidal statements.”In June 2024,
Slovenia’s parliament passed a decree recognizing Palestinian statehood,
following in the steps of Ireland, Norway, and Spain, in moves partly
fueled by condemnation of Israel’s bombing of Gaza after the October 7,
2023, Hamas massacre on southern Israel that sparked the war.Norway
fund’s ethic watchdog scrutinizes Israel investmentsAlso Wednesday, the
ethics watchdog for Norway’s $1.9 trillion sovereign wealth fund, the
world’s largest, said it should have considered whether a company that
services Israel’s fighter jets ought to be assessed for possible
divestment. The influential fund’s holdings in Israel — nearly $2 billion
of shares in 65 companies at the end of 2024 — have been under greater
scrutiny since the war began, with pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel
activists globally calling for Israel to be shunned. The Norwegian fund
has sold stakes in an Israeli energy company and a telecoms group in the
last year, and its ethics council has said it is reviewing whether to
recommend divesting holdings in five Israeli banks. On Monday,
Aftenposten daily said the fund had built a stake in 2023-24 in Israeli
jet engine group Bet Shemesh Engines that provides services to the armed
forces, including the maintenance of fighter jets.Norway’s government
ordered a review of the fund’s portfolio on Tuesday to ensure that
Israeli companies contributing to activities in the West Bank or the war
in Gaza were excluded. It gave 15 days to the watchdog, called the
Council on Ethics, and the fund’s operator, Norges Bank Investment
Management (NBIM), to report back. The Council on Ethics said it had
assessed sellers of aero engines, including Bet Shemesh, some time ago,
in relation to a guideline about companies selling weapons to states
that use them in violation of conflict norms. The firm’s activities were
assessed not to be within that scope, Aslak Skancke, chief adviser to
the council, told Reuters. However, maintenance probably should have
been considered, he added.Bet Shemesh did not reply to a request for
comment. The watchdog investigates whether companies the fund invests in
break ethical guidelines set by parliament and makes recommendations.
But the final say lies with the board of the Norwegian central bank,
which operates the fund.Separately on Wednesday, Norway’s Finance
Minister Jens Stoltenberg called in fund chief Nicolai Tangen, Central
Bank Chief Governor Ida Wolden Bache, and Council on Ethics chief Svein
Richard Brandtzaeg, to a meeting about the review.“During the meeting,
the finance minister underlined the seriousness of the case as well as
its significance and that the review must happen as soon as possible,”
the finance ministry said.NBIM declined to comment, citing the impending
review.Tangen told public broadcaster NRK that Bet Shemesh had not been
on any list of companies, established by non-government organizations
or other bodies, recommended for divestments. The fund held a 2.09% stake
in the company at the end of 2024, the latest fund data available,
worth $15 million. That was up from $3.6 million at the end of 2023, the
year it began investing in Bet Shemesh. The fund’s investments in Israel
are managed partly internally and partly by external management
companies, the fund told Reuters, declining to give further
details.Norway’s parliament in June rejected a proposal for the
sovereign wealth fund to divest from all companies with activities in
the West Bank. The fund owns 1.5% of the world’s listed shares across
8,800 companies. The nearly two-year Israeli offensive has killed more
than 61,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in
Gaza, in figures that have not been verified and do not distinguish
between combatants and civilians. There are also an increasing number of
reports on a looming famine in Gaza. The devastating war came after
Hamas-led terrorists killed more than 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians,
and took 251 hostages to Gaza during their massacre on October 7, 2023.
More than 450 Israeli soldiers have subsequently been killed fighting in
the Strip.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Almost
9 in 10 aid trucks looted before reaching Gaza destinations, UN figures
show-Majority are overrun by ‘starving, desperate people,’ not Hamas or
other armed groups, UN staffer tells ToI, adding problem didn’t exist
during January truce, when aid was sufficient-By Jacob Magid and ToI

Almost nine out of every 10 UN
trucks that entered Gaza with humanitarian aid over the last several
months were looted — either by hungry Gazans or by armed groups — before
reaching their destination, according to United Nations statistics. The
figures were released amid a push by Israel and allies to surge
humanitarian aid into the enclave, including through ten-hour daily
pauses in combat operations in parts of the Strip, airdropping
operations, and new corridors on the ground for aid’s
distribution.Israel denies any policy to deprive Gazans of food and
blames the UN and other groups on the ground for failing to effectively
distribute the aid that’s entered the Strip; still, Jerusalem
acknowledges that many Gazan civilians face hunger, some twenty-two
months into Israel’s ongoing war to defeat the Hamas terror group and
free the hostages it took captive on October 7, 2023.Since the May
resumption of humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza after a two-month
Israeli blockade, a total of 2,604 aid trucks have been collected by the
UN. Of those, 2,309 — 88% — did not reach their intended destinations
inside the Strip, according to the United Nations Office for Project
Services.According to the organization, this was due to the trucks being
“intercepted either peacefully by hungry people or forcefully by armed
actors during transit in Gaza.”According to UNOPS, in June, 1,155 trucks
were collected by the UN and its partner organizations after crossing
into Gaza, and 1,048 of them — 90.7% — were intercepted before reaching
their destinations. In July, the figure rose to 94%, with 1,161 trucks
collected and 1,093 intercepted.Olga Cherevko from the UN Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs clarified to The Times of Israel
that the vast majority of looting is being carried out by hungry Gazans,
not by armed gangs.“The long-standing restrictions on the entry of aid
have created an unpredictable environment where there is a lack of
confidence by the communities that aid will reach them,” she said.“This
has resulted in many of our convoys offloaded directly by starving,
desperate people as they continue to face deep levels of hunger and are
struggling to feed their families,” the UN staffer continued.“As we have
said before, the only way to reach a level of confidence is by having a
sustained flow of aid over a period of time. This was clearly evident
during the weeks of the last ceasefire when such incidents did not
occur,” she added.Israel says that Hamas steals supplies from deliveries
by the UN and international aid groups. The US- and Israel-backed Gaza
Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), established to provide aid via an
alternative that would keep goods out of Hamas’s hands, has been plagued
by near-daily shooting incidents that have seen hundreds killed as they
try to reach the GHF distribution centers.Israel, in response to a
rising international uproar over the humanitarian situation in the
Strip, announced last week steps to let more aid reach Gaza, including
pausing fighting for part of the day in some areas, approving air drops
by foreign nations, and announcing protected routes for aid
convoys.Israel also announced Tuesday it will gradually permit the entry
of goods into Gaza through the private sector for the first time in
almost a year, adding another channel for supplies to arrive alongside
the aid organizations already operating.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry
said Monday evening that five people died of starvation or malnutrition
over the previous 24 hours. The new deaths raised the alleged toll of
those dying from hunger to 180, including 93 children, since the war
began. Hamas figures cannot be verified, and the group does not
distinguish between civilians and fighters. The war in Gaza began on
October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists invaded Israel,
killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, of whom 50 — 20 of
whom are believed to be alive — are still held in the Strip.
