ISRAEL TO GO AFTER GAZA AND HAMAS WITH 50,000 IDF TROUPS.
EZEK 39:11-16
11
And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a
place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the
east of the sea: (IN THE JORDAN VALLEY) and it shall stop the noses of
the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and
they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13
Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to
them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord God.
14
And they shall sever out men of continual employment, (NUCLEAR
SPECIALISTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those
that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of
seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass
through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a
sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.

IDF GEARS UP: 50,000 Troops Preparing For Final, Crushing Assault To Eradicate Hamas From Gaza-March 2, 2025
Israel
is reportedly preparing to launch a massive military operation to
finally eliminate Hamas from the Gaza Strip. According to an explosive
report by The Washington Free Beacon, the offensive is slated to begin
in four to six weeks and will see the IDF deploy over 50,000 soldiers in
a full-scale ground invasion.The operation—described as a “ruthless and
uncompromising” push—aims to dismantle Hamas’s strongholds once and for
all. It will commence with intense aerial bombardments followed by a
systematic reduction of humanitarian aid to the enclave. The IDF will
then advance in force, slicing Gaza into three segments by attacking
simultaneously from the north, center, and south.According to multiple
Israeli officials cited in the report, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu
and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz have personally tasked incoming IDF
Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. (res.) Eyal Zamir with designing this
aggressive plan, which is expected to be finalized when he assumes
command this Thursday.Israel’s military and security leaders are leaving
no room for ambiguity—this battle will be different. Brig. Gen. (res.)
Amir Avivi, founder of the Israel Defense and Security Forum (IDSF), put
it bluntly: “Israel will use every tool it has to conquer Gaza and
eradicate Hamas.”Meanwhile, Col. (res.) Hezi Nechama, a prominent
advocate of previous military offensives, emphasized the scale of the
coming assault: “We’re going to see four to five divisions
simultaneously attack in the north, in the center, and in the south, to
occupy every area and clear out the enemy. It will look different than
what we saw in the war until now.”In a dramatic shift in policy,
Professor Kobi Michael of the Institute for National Security Studies
(INSS) at Tel Aviv University confirmed that outside designated
humanitarian zones, no aid will be allowed into Gaza. He argued that
this would prevent Hamas from looting resources while also increasing
pressure on the terrorist group through its own population.Despite the
overwhelming force Israel is preparing to unleash, the report suggests
that the war could be paused—but only under strict conditions. If Hamas
agrees to release all hostages or surrenders and goes into exile, a
temporary cessation of hostilities may be considered. As of now, 59
hostages remain in captivity, with intelligence reports indicating that
at least 35 of them may already be dead.Meanwhile, Hamas is also
reportedly preparing for the resumption of combat, prompting the IDF to
raise its alert level along the Gaza border. In a strategic
recalibration, Israeli military commanders believe that Hezbollah’s
weakened position in Lebanon has allowed the IDF to redeploy more
divisions to the south. Nechama, one of the key military voices behind
the plan, underscored the shift in focus: “We always had divisions in
the north, and now we don’t need them there because Hezbollah is not a
threat. So we can take those divisions and put them all in Gaza at the
same time, and this is very important.”Outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Lt.
Gen. Herzi Halevi’s military plan for Gaza was reportedly deemed too
timid by his successor. The report indicates that Zamir dismissed the
previous blueprint and instead proposed a far more aggressive and
decisive approach, with significantly greater troop involvement.“The
next chief of staff didn’t like what he heard,” Nechama said. “He told
the prime minister and the defense minister that he would present them
with another plan, much more aggressive and decisive with many more
troops involved.”With U.S. support for Israel at a peak, reports suggest
that the Netanyahu government feels emboldened to wage this war with
fewer restraints than in previous operations. If the Trump
administration continues its policy of giving Israel broad operational
freedom, the next phase of the Gaza war could unfold with unprecedented
intensity.(YWN World Headquarters – NYC)
Jerusalem claims US
backs move to push extension of now-expired 1st phase of ceasefire
rather than negotiating 2nd phase; PM: ‘Humanitarian aid turned into
terrorist budget against us’By Lazar Berman,ToI Staff and Agencies 2
March 2025, 1:58 pm
Israel said Sunday it would not allow any
more goods to enter Gaza over what it called Hamas’s refusal to accept a
proposal to extend the expiring initial stage of the ceasefire and
hostage release deal, and threatened “additional consequences” and a
return to war.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government said the
move had rock-solid backing from US President Donald Trump’s White
House, even as Jerusalem appeared to back away from its previous
agreement with Hamas to negotiate a second phase of the ceasefire during
which additional hostages would be released and Israel would fully
withdraw from Gaza.“With the end of phase one of the hostage deal and in
light of Hamas’s refusal to accept the [US special envoy Steve] Witkoff
outline for continuing talks – to which Israel agreed – Prime Minister
Netanyahu has decided that, as of this morning, all entry of goods and
supplies into the Gaza Strip will cease,” the Prime Minister’s Office
said in a statement Sunday morning.“Israel will not allow a ceasefire
without the release of our hostages,” the PMO added, threatening
“further consequences” if Hamas continues to say no to the proposal. It
later denied a report in Arabic-language media that Netanyahu had
dispatched a delegation to Egypt for talks.Netanyahu also claimed at his
weekly cabinet meeting that Hamas is diverting aid entering the Strip
for its own use.“Hamas is currently taking control of all supplies and
goods sent to the Gaza Strip. It is abusing the Gazan population who are
trying to receive the aid, it is shooting at them, and is turning
humanitarian aid into a terrorist budget directed against us,” he
said.According to the Kan public broadcaster, Israel believes enough aid
has entered the enclave in recent weeks to last Gaza for several
months. Jerusalem has questioned the veracity of reports of famine in
the enclave over the course of the war, which has been blamed on a lack
of sufficient aid flowing into the Strip via Israel-controlled border
crossings. Both Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said Israel
was prepared to negotiate the next phase of the ceasefire but was
insisting on more hostages being freed during the talks.“The commitment
to bringing in this amount [of supplies to Gaza] was in the first
phase,” Sa’ar said at a press conference. “The first phase ended, and we
are implementing the principle of no free meals.”Israel announced it
was adopting a previously unpublicized “Witkoff plan” early Sunday as
the first stage of the ceasefire deal expired and the sides failed to
negotiate a second phase.According to Israel’s account of Witkoff’s
proposal, the halt in fighting would extend until the end of Passover on
April 19. Under the plan, half of the remaining hostages — living and
dead — would be released on the first day of the extended ceasefire, and
the remaining captives would be released at the end of the period if a
permanent ceasefire is reached.Netanyahu denied that Israel was shirking
its commitment to negotiate the second phase, saying Witkoff proposed
the extension after he understood there was no way to bridge Israeli and
Hamas positions on moving to the next stage.“He even defined his
proposal as a corridor for negotiations on phase two,” said Netanyahu.
“Israel is ready for this.”Hamas rejected the new proposal and lashed
out against Israel for cutting off aid, calling it “cheap extortion, a
war crime and a blatant attack on the [hostage-ceasefire] agreement.”The
terror group urged mediators to compel Israel to reverse the
decision.Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters the decision
to halt goods would impact the ceasefire talks, adding his group
“doesn’t respond to pressures.”Both sides stopped short of saying the
ceasefire had ended, though Palestinians reported several killed in an
Israeli strike in Beit Hanoun Sunday morning. The Israel Defense Forces
confirmed the strike, saying a drone was used to hit suspects spotted
planting explosives near troops stationed in the Strip. In a Jerusalem
press conference on Sunday, Sa’ar insisted the halt of aid was fully
coordinated with the White House.“The Americans, of course, accept our
position, and are familiar with it,” the foreign minister said alongside
his Croatian counterpart. He said Israel had received a side letter from
the Biden administration “that explicitly states that there is no
automatic transition between phases.”“We fulfilled all our commitments
[under Phase 1] until the very last day, which was yesterday,” he told a
press conference. “Our position is that during negotiations, hostages
should be released.”Phase one of the ceasefire with Hamas formally ended
at midnight as Saturday became Sunday. Minutes later, following a
four-hour security consultation with top officials, Netanyahu’s office
declared that it was endorsing what he described as a US proposal, which
would see the ceasefire with Hamas extended through Ramadan and
Passover, during which all hostages could potentially be released. The
Israeli statement claimed that Hamas has so far rejected the US plan,
and implied that if this stance isn’t changed, Israel could resume the
war that was sparked by the Palestinian terror group’s October 7, 2023,
devastating onslaught in southern Israel and that has been on pause
since January 19.There has been no official comment from the US
administration on Israel’s announcement nor has it confirmed the Witkoff
proposal.Talks on the second phase were meant to begin on Day 16 of the
42-day first phase that has now ended, but Israel has not engaged in
indirect talks with Hamas on the topic.Beyond failing to engage in talks
on the second phase, Israel has also not begun pulling back from the
Philadelphi Corridor, which it is required to begin doing this week
according to the agreement with Hamas.Netanyahu has indicated he is
opposed to redeploying troops away from the belt of land on the
Gaza-Egypt border that Israel says is used as a key smuggling route by
Hamas to rearm and rebuild its forces.Terror groups in the Gaza Strip
are holding 59 hostages, including the bodies of at least 35 confirmed
dead by the Israel Defense Forces. Two of the 24 abductees presumed
alive, as well as three of the dead captives, don’t hold Israeli
citizenship. The 24 hostages presumed to be alive who are still held by

phase, 33 Israeli hostages were released, eight of them dead, in
exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including many
convicted terrorists serving hefty jail sentences. Five Thai nationals
held hostage in the Gaza Strip were freed during the same period under a
separate arrangement.Under the ceasefire outline agreed to by Israel
and Hamas on January 19, the remaining living hostages were to be
released during the second stage of the deal, during which the IDF would
complete a full withdrawal from Gaza. A third stage is also planned,
during which the bodies of hostages held by Gazan terror groups would be
released, the war would end, and the reconstruction of Gaza would
begin.Senior Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz,
have said in recent days that the military was preparing for the option
of the war resuming.Witkoff is expected to visit Israel soon, likely
this coming week. The Ynet news site reported early Sunday, without
citing sources, that Jerusalem would likely hold off on renewing the
fighting until the visit. A trip to the region planned for last week was
called off due to a lack of progress in the talks. An Israeli official
told The Times of Israel that Witkoff would not travel to the region
until late in the week at the earliest, as he plans to remain in the
United States for Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday.
Report: Next potential steps to pressure Hamas include cutting electricity to Gaza, resuming war-Today, 2:26 am-MAR 2,25
Israel
is planning to incrementally pile on pressure on Hamas to accept a new
proposal extending the ceasefire deal’s first phase and securing the
release of all the hostages the terror group is holding, in addition to
Sunday’s halt to aid entering the Gaza Strip, the Kan public broadcaster
reports. The report says the next stages of Israel’s “maximum pressure”
plan, said to have been drafted over the past few weeks, is to again
move the Gazan population from northern Gaza to the territory’s south —
as had been the case for most of the war — and later, if needed, cutting
all electricity to the Strip. The final planned measure is reportedly a
full return to the war, this time with the heavy bombs withheld by the
previous US administration as well as the billions worth of arms and
military equipment the new administration is sending Israel.
US
backs Israeli demand for new Gaza framework; hostage families: Move on
to 2nd phase-White House doesn’t confirm Witkoff behind proposal to
extend deal’s 1st stage, as Jerusalem contends; relatives of captives
urge bringing everyone back before any renewed fighting By Jacob
Magid,Jessica Steinberg and ToI Staff Today, 2:15 am-MAR 2,25
The
United States offered support Sunday for Israel’s decision to condition
the continuation of the Gaza ceasefire on a new framework extending its
first phase rather than moving on to the second phase, as hostages
families and activists in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem urged the government to
pick the latter option to bring the remaining captives home and end the
war.The White House said it backed Israel’s approach in the hostage
negotiations, but did not specifically confirm Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu’s characterization of the proposal for a new hostage release
framework which Jerusalem decided to back early Sunday as one crafted by
US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.Earlier
Sunday, an Arab official denied to The Times of Israel that Witkoff was
behind the proposal announced by Netanyahu’s office. That proposal would
abandon the second phase framework that Israel and Hamas had agreed to
for a new outline of releasing the remaining 59 hostages in two batches
toward the beginning and end of the Ramadan and Passover holidays that
run through March and until April 19.The Arab official said the plan
Netanyahu described as Witkoff’s was “more of an Israeli plan.”Asked to
comment on the claim, White House National Security Council spokesperson
Brian Hughes avoided responding directly, instead sending a statement
that expressed support for the position of Israel, which decided to stop
the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza after the first phase of the
deal expired on Saturday night.“Israel has negotiated in good faith
since the beginning of this administration to ensure the release of
hostages held captive by Hamas terrorists. We will support their
decision on next steps, given Hamas has indicated it’s no longer
interested in a negotiated ceasefire,” Hughes said.Israel and Hamas were
supposed to begin negotiations regarding the terms of phase two a month
ago, but Israel refrained from doing so since that phase requires — in
exchange for the release of the remaining living hostages — a full
Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and permanent ceasefire, which Netanyahu
has ruled out.Saturday was also supposed to see Israel begin to withdraw
from the Philadelphi Corridor between Egypt and Gaza, but Netanyahu’s
office already said last month that it would not be complying with this
requirement. The Arab official said Hamas had made clear before and after
Netanyahu’s announcement that it was only prepared to release
additional hostages as part of the framework that the sides agreed to in
January.‘Hostages immediately, Hamas afterward’Also Sunday, at a press
statement in Tel Aviv, family members of hostages still held captive in
Gaza said phase two of the hostage deal must commence immediately,
before any return to fighting in Gaza.“Hostages immediately, Hamas
afterward,” said Lishay Miran-Lavi, whose husband Omri Miran, father of
their two young daughters, is still held captive in Gaza.“What are we
waiting for?” said Miran-Lavi. “When can I get up in the morning and
answer my girls’ questions about when daddy Omri is coming home?”Ilay
David, brother of hostage Evyatar David who appeared in a Hamas
propaganda video last week with his best friend, hostage Guy
Gilboa-Dalal, said that was the first time the family had seen Evyatar
since he was kidnapped by Hamas-led terrorists on October 7,
2023.“Evyatar and the others have no time left,” said David. “We’re
grateful to Trump. Bring us a stronger, safer deal. No stages, no
phases, bring us Trump’s deal.”Time is of the essence, said Udi Goren,
whose cousin Tal Haimi was killed on October 7 and his body taken
hostage to Gaza.He said his cousin and the other hostages were the cards
that Hamas holds, but the hostages would not survive if Israel resumed
fighting in Gaza before bringing them back.“The living will become the
dead,” said Goren.Ella Ben Ami, whose father Ohad Ben Ami returned gaunt
and emaciated during the first phase of the deal, said her father was
proof that the hostages must be brought home immediately. Now at home,
Ben Ami eats half a pita after each meal as a way of thinking about the
“five brothers” he left behind, said Ben Ami, describing the starvation
suffered by her father and his fellow captives left in Gaza.Meanwhile,
thousands of people were demonstrating outside the Prime Minister’s
Residence in Jerusalem to demand Israel continue the ceasefire agreement
in Gaza in order to secure the release of more hostages.Terror groups
in the Gaza Strip are holding 59 hostages, including the bodies of at
least 35 confirmed dead by the Israel Defense Forces. In its statement on
early Sunday, Netanyahu’s office said Witkoff had suggested the outline
due to his impression that “at this stage, there is no option to bridge
the gaps between the sides on ending the war, and that additional time
is needed for talks about a permanent ceasefire.”The statement claimed
that Hamas has so far rejected the US plan, and implied that if this
stance isn’t changed, Israel could resume the war against the
Palestinian terror group that was sparked by the latter’s October 7,
2023, onslaught and which has been on pause since January 19.During the
deal’s first phase, 33 Israeli hostages were released, eight of them
dead, in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including many
convicted terrorists serving hefty jail sentences. Five Thai nationals
held hostage in the Gaza Strip were freed separately.Israel did not
directly threaten a return to war, instead reminding the public — and
Hamas — that the initial agreement allows Israel to return to fighting
after March 1 if negotiations are deemed ineffective. But the Kan public
broadcaster reported Sunday evening that resuming fighting was one of
the options for pressuring Hamas to agree to the new proposal, after the
aid halt to Gaza.Under the ceasefire outline agreed by Israel and Hamas
on January 19, the remaining living hostages were to be released during
the second stage of the deal, during which the IDF would complete a
full withdrawal from Gaza. A third stage is also planned, during which
the bodies of hostages held by Gazan terror groups would be released,
the war would end, and the reconstruction of Gaza would begin.Witkoff is
expected to visit Israel soon, likely this week. Several Hebrew media
outlets have reported that Jerusalem will likely hold off on renewing
the fighting until the visit.Lazar Berman contributed to this report.
Arab
states, UN condemn Israel’s halt of aid into Gaza until hostage outline
accepted-Egypt says ‘no alternative’ to original truce deal, while
Jordan and Saudi Arabia accuse Israel of ‘using starvation as a weapon,’
as Hamas rejects Israeli call to extend phase one By Agencies, Lazar
Berman,Jeremy Sharon,ToI Staff and Jacob Magid-Today, 12:38 am-MAR 2,25
Arab
states, the United Nations and rights groups issued condemnations
Sunday of Israel’s decision to halt the flow of humanitarian aid into
the Gaza Strip, though the US was supportive, after the first phase of
Israel’s hostage-ceasefire deal with Hamas lapsed with the terror group
yet to commit to freeing any more of its captives.Israel said Sunday it
had stopped allowing any new aid to flow into the Strip, with Foreign
Minister Gideon Sa’ar saying Jerusalem was “implementing a principle of
‘no free meals'” and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explaining that
Hamas “steals the supplies and prevents the people of Gaza from getting
them.”According to Hebrew media reports, Israel believes that enough aid
is already in Gaza to last the enclave several months.Announcing the
halt to the aid, Israel called for an extension of the deal’s
now-expired first phase through the end of Passover on April
19.According to this plan — which the US said it would support, though
it did not confirm Netanyahu’s contention that it was originally
presented by the White House — half of the remaining hostages, living
and dead, would be released on the first day of the extended ceasefire,
and the remaining captives would be released at the end of the period if
a permanent ceasefire is reached.“Israel has negotiated in good faith
since the beginning of this administration to ensure the release of
hostages held captive by Hamas terrorists. We will support their
decision on next steps, given Hamas has indicated it’s no longer
interested in a negotiated ceasefire,” said White House National
Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes, in a statement.Senior Hamas
official Mahmoud Mardawi rejected the extended-phase-one proposal on
Sunday, telling Qatari network Al Jazeera that the Palestinian terror
group would only release the remaining Israeli hostages under the terms
of the already agreed-upon phased deal.Mardawi’s comments drew a quick
rebuke from the European Union, which condemned Hamas for rejecting the
proposal. In a statement from its External Action Service, however, the
EU also warned that Israel’s decision to keep aid from entering Gaza
“could potentially result in humanitarian consequences” — though it
avoided directly condemning Israel. The EU called for a speedy return to
talks on the ceasefire’s second phase, and for “full, rapid, safe and
unhindered access to humanitarian aid at scale for Palestinians in need
and for allowing and facilitating humanitarian workers and international
organizations to operate effectively and safely inside Gaza.”Arab
states accuse Israel of using starvation as a weapon-Egypt, a key
mediator of the deal and of continued talks between the sides, denounced
Israel’s move on Sunday to stop aid into Gaza as a “flagrant violation”
of the agreement, and accused Israel of using starvation as “a weapon
against the Palestinian people.”Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty
earlier said there was “no alternative to the faithful and full
implementation by all parties of what was signed [in] January.” He said
progress was possible “if goodwill and political will are present.”Egypt
was set to host a meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Monday, ahead of
a Tuesday summit where Arab leaders were due to discuss a
reconstruction plan for Gaza. The Saudi foreign ministry said Sunday that
Israel’s decision “to stop the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza
Strip, and its use as a tool of blackmail and collective punishment… is a
flagrant violation of international law and a direct violation of the
rules of international humanitarian law.”The statement, cited by the
official Saudi Press Agency, also urged the international community to
“stop these serious Israeli violations.”Jordanian foreign ministry
spokesman Sufyan Qudah said in a statement that “the Israeli
government’s decision… threatens to reignite the situation in the
Strip,” adding that Israel must “stop using starvation as a weapon
against innocent Palestinians who are under siege, especially during the
holy month of Ramadan.”The charges by Arab countries that Israel is
using “starvation as a weapon” echoed an accusation leveled repeatedly
at the Jewish state since the war with Hamas began on October 7, 2023,
when the group led thousands of terrorists to invade southern Israel,
killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. In November 2024, the
International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav
Gallant, accusing them of using starvation as a weapon of war — charges
that Israel, as well as the US, strenuously reject, and have denounced
the court for leveling.Israel maintains that all its warfare is
conducted in accordance with international law, pointing to efforts it
makes to avoid civilian casualties.A recent analysis, by a pro-Israel
group, of the aid flow into the Strip also found that the quantity of
food entering the enclave throughout the war has been too high for
famine to be a plausible scenario, even according to figures endorsed by
those levying the accusations at Israel.UN, nonprofits say halting aid
violates international law-The United Nations’ humanitarian chief, Tom
Fletcher, said Sunday: “International humanitarian law is clear: We must
be allowed access to deliver vital lifesaving aid.”In Israel, the Gisha
human rights organization and four other left-wing nonprofits filed a
motion to the High Court of Justice calling for an interim order banning
the government from cutting off the supply of aid.Gisha argued that
halting the provision of aid is illegal “even if [Israel] claims that
the existing aid is sufficient,” adding that recent media reports that
six babies in Gaza died of hypothermia in February proved the claim to
be false anyway.“According to humanitarian law, there is an obligation
to protect the civilian population and allow the free passage of
humanitarian aid to such a population,” wrote Gisha in its petition,
saying the supply cannot be “made conditional.”24 presumed-living
hostages still in Gaza, 35 dead-Terror groups in the Gaza Strip are
holding 59 hostages, including the bodies of at least 35 confirmed dead
by the Israel Defense Forces.Under the ceasefire outline agreed to by
Israel and Hamas on January 19, the remaining living hostages were to be
released during the second stage of the deal, during which the IDF
would complete a full withdrawal from Gaza. A third stage is also
planned, during which the bodies of hostages held by Gazan terror groups
would be released, the war would end, and the reconstruction of Gaza
would begin.Talks on the second phase were meant to begin on day 16 of
the 42-day first phase which ended on Saturday night, but Israel has not
engaged in indirect talks with Hamas on the topic.Senior Israeli
officials have said in recent days that the military is preparing for
the option of the war resuming.White House envoy Steve Witkoff is
expected to visit Israel soon — though likely not until late this coming
week or next, according to an Israeli official speaking to The Times of
Israel. The Ynet news site reported early Sunday, without citing
sources, that Jerusalem would likely hold off on renewing the fighting
until the visit.
Egypt says Gaza reconstruction plan ready, will
intensify efforts for phase two-Foreign minister says once plan is
adopted at coming Arab summit, Cairo will seek international donors to
fund program that would leave Gazans in place — unlike Trump’s vision-By
Agencies and ToI Staff 2 March 2025, 5:03 pm
Egyptian Foreign
Minister Badr Abdelatty said Sunday that his country’s Gaza
reconstruction plan, which would ensure that the Palestinian population
remains in the Strip, is ready and will be presented to an emergency
Arab summit on March 4.Arab states that were swift to reject US
President Donald Trump’s plan for the US to take control of Gaza and
resettle Palestinians are scrambling to agree on a diplomatic offensive
to counter the idea.Trump’s plan, announced on February 4 during a
fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, has infuriated
Palestinians and Arab countries and upended decades of US diplomacy that
envisioned the Gaza Strip as part of a future Palestinian state under a
two-state solution.The Egyptian counter-plan, according to Abdelatty,
will not be purely Egyptian or Arab but will seek international support
and funding to ensure its successful implementation.“We will hold
intensive talks with major donor countries once the plan is adopted at
the upcoming Arab summit,” Abdelatty said in a press conference with
European Union Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka
Šuica.Abdelatty said Europe’s role, especially in the economic aspect of
rebuilding the war-torn enclave, is critical.Asked about the ceasefire
deal, whose first phase ended last week, Abdelatty said Egypt will
continue its intensive efforts to ensure the truce is maintained and
negotiations for its second phase can begin. He stressed the importance
of safely executing the ceasefire agreement signed in January,
emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to ensuring its proper
implementation.“The first phase has concluded successfully, and now we
must shift to discussions on the second phase, which is key to
sustaining the ceasefire,” he said. “Naturally, it will be difficult,
but with goodwill and political determination, it can be achieved.”The
fate of the ceasefire was thrown into confusion on Sunday as its first
phase came to an end.Abdelatty said that following the emergency Arab
summit, there will be an urgent ministerial meeting in Saudi Arabia of
the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, where foreign ministers will
push for the summit’s outcomes to be presented globally.“We will ensure
that the results of the Arab summit are presented to the world in the
best possible way,” he said. The three-stage ceasefire agreement, reached
last month, halted some 15 months of fighting triggered by Hamas’s
October 7, 2023, invasion of southern Israel, when thousands of
terrorists killed some 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. The deal
requires Hamas to release all the hostages, Israel to release thousands
of Palestinian security prisoners — including hundreds serving life
sentences — and a halt to fighting in the Strip, followed by
negotiations for a “sustainable calm” and IDF withdrawal from the
enclave. The first stage, though plagued by missteps, ended Saturday,
having achieved its targets. Talks on the second phase, during which
additional hostages would be released and Israel would fully withdraw
from Gaza, were meant to begin on day 16 of the 42-day first phase.
However, Israel has not engaged in mediated talks with Hamas on the
topic. Then, on Sunday, Israel said it would not allow any more goods to
enter Gaza over what it called Hamas’s refusal to accept a proposal to
extend the expiring initial stage of the ceasefire and hostage release
deal.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government said the move had
rock-solid backing from Trump’s White House.Hamas rejected the new
proposal and lashed out against Israel for cutting off aid, calling it
“cheap extortion, a war crime and a blatant attack on the
[hostage-ceasefire] agreement.”Both sides stopped short of saying the
ceasefire had ended.Abdelatty on Sunday called for total compliance with
the Gaza ceasefire deal, urging both Israel and Hamas to honor their
commitments.“There is no alternative to the faithful and full
implementation by all parties of what was signed last January,”
Abdelatty said.Even before the ceasefire was signed, Netanyahu came
under pressure from the far-right flank of his coalition to continue the
war. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has threatened to pull his
Religious Zionism party from the government if his demand to resume the
war after the first stage is not met, which would eliminate Netanyahu’s
parliamentary majority.
Coalition lawmakers welcome Netanyahu’s
decision to stop entry of aid into Gaza-Halt imposed as Israel accuses
Hamas of refusing proposal to extend first phase of truce; terror group
slams ‘cheap extortion,’ warns of consequences to hostages-By Sam
Sokol,Lazar Berman,Nava Freiberg and ToI Staff 2 March 2025, 4:27 pm
Coalition
lawmakers welcomed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision on
Sunday to not let any more aid enter Gaza, citing Hamas’s refusal to
accept what Israel said was an American proposal to extend the ceasefire
agreement’s first phase, which expired at midnight after 42 days. The
terror group slammed Netanyahu’s decision as “cheap extortion, a war
crime and a blatant attack on the agreement,” and urged mediators to
force Israel to reverse the decision. The terror group said the Jewish
state “bears responsibility for the consequences of its decision” for
Gazans and hostages alike.Zionist opposition leaders — The Democrats’
Yair Golan, Yesh Atid’s Yair Lapid, Yisrael Beytenu’s Avigdor Liberman
and National Unity’s Benny Gantz — refrained from speaking out about the
decision. Meanwhile, further-left lawmakers and civil society groups
warned it would harm civilians and hostages in Gaza, and assailed
Netanyahu for refusing to negotiate the second phase of the
ceasefire. That second phase would see Hamas release remaining living
hostages and Israel withdraw from the Strip — a red line for the
Netanyahu coalition’s right-wing flank.Speaking about the humanitarian
aid halt, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said that US President Donald
Trump’s administration “accepts our stance” and that warnings of famine
in Gaza have been “a lie” throughout the war there.“We’re prepared to
continue negotiations, including on phase two, according to our
principles, in exchange for the release of hostages,” Sa’ar said at a
joint press conference in Jerusalem with his Croatian
counterpart.Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has threatened to
topple the government should it proceed to the second phase, wrote on X
that Netanyahu’s decision “to completely halt the flow of humanitarian
aid into Gaza until Hamas is destroyed or completely surrenders and all
our hostages are returned is an important step in the right
direction.”Israel needs to open the “gates of hell… as quickly and in as
deadly a manner as possible” until “complete victory” is achieved,
wrote Smotrich, paraphrasing Trump’s repeated threats against Hamas if
it failed to release the hostages. He added that ensuring the aid halt
was the reason his Religious Zionism party had stayed in the government
despite opposing the ceasefire agreement.Education Minister Yoav Kisch
(Likud) said on X that “the decision to halt the entry of humanitarian
aid until the hostages are returned is important and correct.”“Israel
must continue to pressure Hamas with all the tools at its disposal,
while cooperating with the American administration until the last of the
hostages is returned,” he said.Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi
(Likud), who has called for the forced expulsion of Gazans, said all of
the hostages must return home immediately or Israel would rain “fire and
brimstone on the despicable terrorists without mercy.”“The Jews will
have light and joy, and the Nazis will have the gates of hell open
today,” he wrote on X.Former national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir,
whose far-right Otzma Yehudit party left the coalition in protest of
the hostage-ceasefire agreement with Hamas, welcomed Netanyahu’s
decision “if it is indeed implemented” and said the move was “better
late than never.”“This should be the policy until the last of the
hostages is returned,” said Ben Gvir.“Now is the time to open the gates
of hell, stop the electricity and water, return to war, and — most
importantly — not settle for just half of the hostages, but rather
return to President Trump’s ultimatum: all the hostages immediately or
all hell will break loose in Gaza.”MK Ofer Cassif, of the communist
Hadash party, wrote on X that Netanyahu’s decision was a war crime that
“violates the [ceasefire] agreement, and punishes not just the
Palestinians — who are honoring the agreement — but also the hostages
who are being abandoned to die in cruel captivity.”Israeli-Palestinian
socialist collective Standing Together warned in a statement that the
humanitarian aid halt would harm hostages and civilians in
Gaza.“Netanyahu’s refusal to hold talks on the [ceasefire] deal’s second
phase — contrary to the agreement the government signed some six weeks
ago — spells the sacrifice of the hostages and surrender to Smotrich’s
demand to resume the fighting,” said the group, which has collected and
transferred humanitarian aid to the Strip.“A significant majority of the
Israeli public wants the deal to be completed, the war ended, and all
the hostages brought home alive,” read the statement. The second phase of
the ceasefire deal would see Hamas release 24 hostages believed to
still be alive. Following the completion of the first phase — which saw
Hamas release 33 women, children, civilian men over 50 and those deemed
“humanitarian cases” — all the remaining living hostages are young
men.Another 35 hostages confirmed dead by the IDF would be returned in a
potential third phase. These comprise a soldier killed in the 2014 Gaza
war and 34 people kidnapped on October 7, 2023, when thousands of
Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Israel to kill some 1,200 people
and take 251 hostages, sparking the war in Gaza.Netanyahu commenced
talks for the second phase only on Thursday, despite having been
required under the agreement to start negotiating by February 3, day 16
of the first phase. Israel also failed to withdraw on Saturday from the
Philadelphi Corridor, separating Gaza and Egypt, as stipulated by the
deal.Early on Sunday, minutes after the first phase expired, Netanyahu’s
office said it endorsed a proposal to extend the ceasefire through
Ramadan and Passover. The Muslim holy month, which began on Friday in
Gaza, will last through March 29, while the weeklong Jewish holiday ends
on April 19. In that time, the remaining 59 hostages could be released,
according to the premier’s office, which attributed the proposal to US
President Donald Trump’s special Middle East envoy, Steve
Witkoff.According to Israel’s account of the proposal, half of the
remaining hostages — living and dead — would be released on the first
day of the extended first phase of the ceasefire, and the remaining
captives would be released at the end of the period if a permanent truce
is reached.
In Gaza, Ramadan’s start overshadowed by war fears
as ceasefire’s first phase expires-Truce brings some relief compared to
last year’s holy month, but uncertainty whether agreement will last
leaves war-wary Gazans apprehensive: ‘We want peace and safety’By AP and
ToI Staff 2 March 2025, 11:42 am
Before the war, the Muslim holy
month of Ramadan was a festive time of increased worship, social
gatherings and cheer for Fatima Al-Absi. Together with her husband, the
resident of Jabalia, in northern Gaza, said, she used to do Ramadan
shopping, visit relatives and head to the mosque for prayers. But the
Israel-Hamas war has shredded many of the familiar and cherished threads
of Ramadan as Al-Absi once knew it: her husband and a son-in-law have
been killed, her home was damaged and burnt and the mosque she attended
during Ramadan was destroyed, she said.“Everything has changed,” she
said on Saturday as her family observed the first day of Ramadan.
“There’s no husband, no home, no proper food and no proper life.”This
year’s Ramadan comes 16 months into the war in Gaza, sparked on October
7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Israel
to kill some 1,200 people and take 251 hostages. The holy month began on
the 42nd and final day of the ceasefire deal’s first phase, with the
agreement’s future unclear.Compared to last Ramadan, many in Gaza found
relief in the truce — but there’s also worry and fear about what’s next
and grief over the personal and collective losses, the raw wounds and
the numerous scars left behind.“I’ve lost a lot,” said Al-Absi, a
57-year-old grandmother, who’s been reduced to eking out an existence
amid the wreckage. “Life is difficult. May God grant us patience and
strength,” she added. The ceasefire agreement’s first phase saw Hamas
release 33 women, children, civilian men over 50 and those deemed
“humanitarian cases,” in exchange for some 1,900 Palestinian prisoners,
including over 270 serving life terms for the murders of dozens of
Israelis.Talks for the second phase began on Thursday, after Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to commence them on February 3 — day
16 of the first phase — as stipulated by the agreement. The premier’s
right-wing flank has threatened to topple the government should Israel
proceed to the second phase, which would require the IDF to withdraw
from Gaza.In a statement minutes after the first phase expired,
Netanyahu’s office said it supports a US proposal to extend the first
phase of the ceasefire in Gaza through Ramadan, which ends March 29, and
Passover, which ends April 19, even as Hamas had insisted earlier on
negotiating the truce’s second phase.According to the statement, the US
proposal came after White House envoy Steve Witkoff got “the impression
that at this stage there was no possibility of bridging the positions of
the parties to end the war, and that more time was needed for talks on a
permanent ceasefire.”On Sunday, Israel announced it was cutting off the
entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza due to Hamas’s refusal to extend
the expired initial stage of the ceasefire.Speaking before the statement
was issued, Al-Absi said she’s praying for the war to end and can’t
bear any more losses.“We’re scared because there’s no stability,” she
said.Though Ramadan is still far from normal, some in the Gaza Strip
said that, in some ways, it feels better than last year’s.“We can’t
predict what will happen next,” Amal Abu Sariyah, in Gaza City, said
before the month’s start. “Yes, the country is destroyed and the
situation is very bad, but the feeling that the shelling and the
killing… have stopped makes you [feel]that this year is better than the
last one.”Overshadowed by war and displacement, last Ramadan was “very
bad” for the Palestinian people, she said. The 2024 Ramadan in Gaza
began with ceasefire talks at a standstill, hunger worsening across the
Strip and no end in sight to the war. This year, under the ceasefire,
hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced at the start of the war
returned to northern Gaza. After initial relief and joy at returning to
their homes — even if damaged or destroyed — they’ve been grappling with
living amid the wreckage. As Palestinians in the Gaza Strip prepared for
Ramadan, shopping for essential household goods and food, some lamented
harsh living conditions and economic hardships, but also said they rely
on their faith in God to provide for them.“I used to help people…
Today, I can’t help myself,” said Nasser Shoueikh. “My situation, thank
God, used to be better and I wasn’t in need for anything… We ask God to
stand by us.”For observant Muslims the world over, Ramadan is a time for
fasting daily from dawn to sunset, increased worship, religious
reflection, charity and good deeds. Socially, it often brings families
and friends together in festive gatherings around meals to break their
fast.Elsewhere in the Gaza Strip, Fatima Barbakh, from the southern city
of Khan Younis, said her Ramadan shopping was limited to the
essentials.“We can’t buy lanterns or decorations like we do every
Ramadan,” she said.Back in Jabalia, Al-Absi bitterly described how she
used to break her fast with her husband, how much she misses him and how
she remembers him when she prays.“We don’t want war,” she said. “We
want peace and safety.”According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry,
more than 48,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed
dead in the fighting so far. The toll, which cannot be verified, does
not distinguish between civilians and fighters.Israel says it has killed
some 20,000 combatants in battle as of January and another 1,600
terrorists inside Israel on October 7. The IDF has said it seeks to
minimize civilian fatalities and accuses Hamas of using Gaza’s civilians
as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes,
hospitals, schools, and mosques.
US approves sale of $3 bn in munitions, bulldozers to Israel-by AFP Staff Writers.
Washington
(AFP) Mar 01, 2025-The United States on Friday announced the approval
of the sale of more than $3 billion in munitions, bulldozers and related
equipment to Israel, which used American-made weapons to devastating
effect in densely populated Gaza.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio
signed off on the sales of $2.04 billion in bomb bodies and warheads,
another $675.7 million in other bomb bodies and guidance kits, and $295
million in bulldozers and related equipment, the US Defense Security
Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said.Rubio "has determined and provided
detailed justification that an emergency exists that requires the
immediate sale to the government of Israel of the above defense articles
and defense services in the national security interests of the United
States," DSCA said. That results in the waiver of the usual requirement
that such sales be approved by Congress, it said."The United States is
committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to US national
interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready
self-defense capability," DSCA added. The latest weapons transactions
come after Washington approved the sales of more than $7.4 billion in
bombs, missiles and related equipment to Israel earlier this
month.Israel launched a hugely destructive offensive against Hamas in
Gaza in October 2023 in response to an unprecedented attack by the
Palestinian militant group that month. The war devastated much of Gaza --
a narrow coastal territory on the Mediterranean -- resulting in the
displacement of much of its population, but a ceasefire has been in
effect since last month, bringing a halt to the deadly conflict and
providing for the release of hostages seized by Hamas. In response to
concerns over civilian deaths, then-president Joe Biden's administration
blocked a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel last year. But his
successor Donald Trump has rolled back that decision, and the sales
announced Friday include weapons of that size.
DANIEL 2:37-45
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and
the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made
thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after
thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third
kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And
the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh
in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these,
shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the
feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom
shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron,
forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle
themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to
another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of
these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never
be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it
shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand
for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of
the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the
brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
DANIEL 7:17-26
17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.
19
Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from
all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his
nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue
with his feet;
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of
the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn
that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was
more stout than his fellows.
21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
22
Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of
the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
23
Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,
which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole
earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the
ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and
another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first,
and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words
against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High,
and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his
hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

Ukraine’s
allies embrace Zelensky in London, warn of ‘once-in-a-generation
moment’UK’s Keir Starmer tells Zelensky Europe is ready to back Kyiv
‘for as long as it takes,’ at talks held days after Trump and Vance
publicly berated Ukrainian president-By James Pheby 2 March 2025, 6:53
pm
LONDON (AFP) — UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday warned
that European security faces a once-in-a-generation moment at the start
of Ukraine crisis talks in London, just days after a Kyiv-Washington
clash.Eighteen allies gathered on the key question of security
guarantees for Ukraine, especially after US President Donald Trump
berated his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in an
unprecedented White House blow-up.Summit host Starmer, sitting next to
Zelensky and in front of the flags of Ukraine and European nations, said
it was “a once-in-a-generation moment for the security of Europe and we
all need to step up.”“I hope you know that we are all with you and the
people of Ukraine for as long as it takes. Everyone around this table,”
he told the Ukrainian leader.Zelensky was embraced by some of the 18
other top leaders, including Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau and NATO chief Mark Rutte. It was a stark contrast to Zelensky’s
unusually heated Friday meeting with Trump in Washington, where he was
berated by the American leader and accused of not being “ready” for
peace with Russia.Speaking ahead of the summit in London, Starmer said
“nobody wants to see” scenes like Zelensky and Trump’s Oval Office
clash.“We have to find a way that we can all work together. Because, in
the end, we’ve had three years of bloody conflict. Now we need to get to
that lasting peace,” Starmer told the BBC.Italian Prime Minister
Giorgia Meloni echoed the sentiment, saying as she met Starmer in his
Downing Street home that it was “very, very important that we avoid the
risk that the West divides.”Ukraine’s allies have been underscoring
their steadfast commitment to counter growing concerns that Trump is
about to sell Kyiv short in negotiations with Russia.Starmer warmly
welcomed Zelensky to the British capital on Saturday, the day after the
Ukrainian leader was kicked out of the White House, extending a loan to
strengthen Ukraine’s depleted defenses. The London meeting brings
together leaders from around continental Europe, including France,
Germany, Denmark and Italy as well as Turkey, NATO and the European
Union. With fears growing over whether the United States will continue to
support NATO, the meeting will also address the need for Europe to
increase defense cooperation. In addition to attending the security
summit, Zelensky is also due to meet King Charles III during his
visit. As Zelensky’s convoy swept into London on Saturday, a crowd of
supporters cheered.“You’re very, very welcome here in Downing Street,”
Starmer told Zelensky before their 75-minute closed-door talks.Zelensky
effusively thanked Britain and its people “for their tremendous support
from the very beginning of this war.”The pair unveiled a £2.26-billion
($2.84 billion) loan agreement to support Ukraine’s defense
capabilities, to be paid back with the profits of immobilized sovereign
Russian assets.Just a day earlier, Zelensky had been shouted down at the
White House. As cameras rolled in the Oval Office, Trump and US Vice
President JD Vance angrily accused Zelensky of not being “thankful” and
refusing to accept their proposed truce terms.Zelensky signals openness
to mineral deal-Trump has alarmed Kyiv and European allies with his
abrupt pivoting of Washington’s years-long support for Ukraine. The
recently inaugurated Republican has cast himself as a mediator between
Putin and Zelensky and has sidelined Kyiv and Europe while pursuing
rapprochement with Putin.Though he refused to apologize after the White
House clash, Zelensky indicated that he was still open to signing a deal
on Ukraine’s mineral wealth — coveted by Trump.“Despite the tough
dialogue,” Ukraine and the United States will “remain strategic
partners,” Zelensky said.“But we need to be honest and direct with each
other to truly understand our shared goals,” the Ukrainian leader wrote
on X.Moscow, meanwhile, branded Zelensky’s Washington trip a “complete
failure.”The Kremlin said in remarks aired on Sunday that the United
States’s dramatic shift in foreign policy toward Russia largely aligned
with its vision.“The new administration is rapidly changing all foreign
policy configurations. This largely coincides with our vision,” Kremlin
spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Russian state
television recorded on Wednesday.
UK, France, Ukraine to present
ceasefire plan to Trump after Zelensky chewed out-European summit
overshadowed by US president’s scolding of Ukrainian leader at Oval
Office meet; Macron says he is open to discuss expanding French nuclear
umbrella across Europe-By AP and Reuters 2 March 2025, 1:06 pm
LONDON
— Britain, France and Ukraine have agreed to work on a ceasefire plan
to present to the United States, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
said Sunday as he prepared to host a summit of European leaders. The
summit has been overshadowed by the extraordinary scolding US President
Donald Trump gave Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White
House on Friday for being ungrateful for US support in Ukraine’s battle
against the invasion by Russia. But Starmer said he is focused on being a
bridge to restore peace talks and use the collapse of talks as an
opportunity to re-engage with Trump and Zelensky and French President
Emmanuel Macron rather than “ramp up the rhetoric.”He told BBC news that
an urgent round of calls to Trump, Zelensky and Macron over the weekend
had cemented the idea that a “coalition of the willing” in Europe would
need to move fast to come up with a peace plan to be presented to the
United States. That meant Europe moving faster than it has done to show
it can defend itself, Starmer said, adding he was not criticizing other
nations but making it clear that countries needed to step up as Britain
and France had by offering peacekeeping troops.“I am not criticizing
anyone here, but rather than moving at the pace of every single country
in Europe, which would in the end be quite a slow process, we’ve got to
probably get to a coalition of the willing now,” he said.“The UK and
France are the most advanced on the thinking of this and that is why
President Macron and I are working on this plan, which we will then
discuss with the US,” he said, adding he did not think Zelensky had done
anything wrong on Friday.Sunday’s meeting is an important step-The
London meeting has taken on greater importance in defending the war-torn
ally and shoring up the continent’s defenses.Sunday’s summit is likely
to include talks on establishing a European military force to be sent to
Ukraine to underpin a ceasefire. Starmer said it would involve “a
coalition of the willing.”Starmer said he does not trust Russian
President Vladimir Putin but does trust Trump.“Do I believe Donald Trump
when he says he wants lasting peace? The answer to that is yes,” he
said.“There’s a real problem for European leaders to pick up the pieces
and try and move forward,” Peter Ricketts, the former British national
security adviser, said of the summit in an interview to BBC radio on
Saturday. “It’s going to be a damage limitation exercise. It’s going to
have to be an exercise in where do we go from here?”The meeting at
Lancaster House, a 200-year-old elegant mansion near Buckingham Palace,
follows a charm offensive last week to engage with Trump at the White
House to put Ukraine at the center of negotiations and tilt his
allegiances toward Europe. The summit will also include leaders from
France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain,
Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania. The Turkish
foreign minister, NATO secretary-general and the presidents of the
European Commission and European Council will also attend.European
leaders are backing Zelensky-Zelensky received broad support from
leaders across Europe after the White House fiasco, which was
exceptional for featuring an attack on an ally — and because it was
broadcast on live television.Starmer embraced Zelensky when he arrived
Saturday for a private meeting — a day before a get-together had been
scheduled before the summit.“As you heard from the cheers on the street
outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom,” Starmer said.
“We stand with you, with Ukraine, for as long as it may take.”Europe
has been uneasy since Trump initiated direct peace talks with Russian
President Vladimir Putin, who had been isolated by most Western leaders
since invading Ukraine three years ago. The scramble to remain relevant
and protect European interests as their once stalwart ally appeared to
be cozying up to Putin was even more troubling when Trump called
Zelensky a dictator and falsely said Ukraine started the war.Meetings in
recent days had provided some hope — until Zelensky’s visit to the
White House.Visits to the Oval Office by Macron, who had declared his
visit a “turning point,” and Starmer were seen as steps in the right
direction. The meetings were cordial and Trump even took a gentler tone
toward Ukraine, though he would not commit to providing US security
guarantees and maintained Europe would need to provide peacekeeping
troops.Within 12 hours of Starmer’s return from Washington, the talk of
peace seemed to collapse as US Vice President JD Vance berated Zelensky
for challenging Trump’s assertions that Russian President Vladimir Putin
could be trusted.“Starmer did an impressive job of asserting Europe’s
agency in the war on Ukraine and conveying to President Trump that
Europe is willing and able to take a leading role in implementing any
credible peace deal,” said Rachel Ellehuus, director-general of Royal
United Services Institute, a defense and security think tank.
“Unfortunately, Friday’s White House meeting was a major step
backward.”Ukraine can no longer count on military or political support
from the US after Trump declared himself neutral in negotiations,
Ellehuus said. She said Europe needs to step in and could release some
200 billion euros ($207 billion) in seized Russian assets to help fund
that effort.“The immediate goal of the meetings in London must be to
keep Ukraine in the fight so it can negotiate from a maximum position of
strength,” she said.Starmer pledged this week to boost military
spending to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2027. Other
European nations may follow suit.Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said
Saturday that Europe faces a historic test and has to care for itself.
He said European countries have to increase their arms spending to reach
at least 3% of GDP.“If we don’t increase our effort fast enough and let
the aggressor dictate its conditions, we won’t end up well,” he
said.Macron, who said it was legitimate for the US to shift its focus to
dealing with China and Asia, also called for more defense spending as
he called for unity among his neighbors.“We should have woken up
earlier,” Macron said. “I’ve been saying for years that we need a more
sovereign, more united, more independent Europe.”Nuclear
deterrence-Macron told Portuguese TV RTP in an interview he posted on X
on Saturday that if Europe wanted to move towards “greater autonomy” in
matters of defense and nuclear deterrence, its leaders should start a
discussion about it.“I am available to open this discussion…if it allows
to build a European force,” he said. “There has always been a European
dimension to France’s vital interests within its nuclear
doctrine.”French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was swift to react to
Macron’s comments, saying at the Farm Show in Paris that “The French
nuclear deterrent must remain a French nuclear deterrent… It must not
be shared, let alone delegated.”French Defense Minister Sebastien
Lecornu reiterated Macron’s stance that France’s vital interests include
a “European dimension” adding that it was under the exclusive control
of the French head of state.“Our nuclear deterrent is French, and it
will remain so: from the design and production of our weapons, to their
implementation by decision of the President of the Republic,” he said on
X.“It protects the vital interests of France, which the head of state
alone can define.”
We urgently have to rearm Europe': EU chief after Ukraine talks.
London,
March 2 (AFP) Mar 02, 2025-European Commission chief Ursula von der
Leyen warned on Sunday that "we urgently have to rearm Europe" as
leaders from the continent met in London for crisis talks over
Ukraine.Von der Leyen said she would present a "comprehensive plan" at
an EU summit on Thursday, adding that "we have to have a surge in
defence" and "step up massively"."It's now of utmost importance we
increase spending ... it's important we prepare for the worst," she
added. The leaders had a "good and frank discussion" and talked about the
need for security guarantees, said the EU chief.Addressing US President
Donald Trump, she said: "We're ready together with you to defend
democracy, to defend the principle that there's a rule of law, that you
cannot invade your neighbour and bully your neighbour, or you cannot
change borders with force"."It's in our common interest that we prevent
future wars," she added.Focusing on nuclear allowed ministers to appear
committed to low-carbon energy while sticking with fossil fuels,
Bergamaschi argued, saying that "as far as Italy is concerned, for all
practical reasons, nuclear power is greenwashing".
Denmark hopes to have air defence system in place from 2026 by AFP Staff Writers.
Copenhagen
(AFP) Feb 28, 2025-Denmark hopes to have an air defence system in place
from 2026, the Danish defence minister announced on Friday."I think we
can realistically come to an agreement by the summer, so that we can
start using the first ground-based air defence systems from 2026,"
defence minister Troels Lund Poulsen told a press conference. The Danish
government recently announced that it would allocate a further 50
billion krone ($7.0 billion) in additional defence spending from 2025 to
2026, increasing Danish defence spending to 3.0 percent of national
GDP.European allies are now talking about further boosting defence
investments in the face of Russian aggression and uncertain support from
Washington.Doubt has been cast on US President Donald Trump's
commitment to European security, as he has demanded that European powers
pay more for their own security. The government already said it wanted
to acquire a system to defend the country from aerial attacks a year
ago, but the current situation has pushed officials to act faster to
find a solution, even if only temporary."Initially, we had planned to
have a system in place in the 2030s," the defence minister said.He said
Denmark would "save at least a few years" by acquiring a temporary
ground-based air defence system, although the government is yet to
decide where to source it from.Lund Poulsen said the government might
rent or lease an air defence system, or decide to buy it."We are
exploring options around the world to see which one can reach us very
soon," Lund Poulsen said.
German government hopefuls planning billions for defence spending: report-Frankfurt, Germany, March 2 (AFP) Mar 02, 2025
The
two parties hoping to form Germany's next government are planning to
plough hundreds of billions of euros into defence and infrastructure
when in power, the Bild newspaper reported Sunday. Both subjects have
become all the more pressing for Berlin's prospective new leaders as
Europe's largest economy stutters and the United States' apparent pivot
toward Russia casts doubt over the continent's security.Citing several
sources close to the negotiations, Bild said the investment plan was
brought up on Friday at coalition talks between the conservative CDU/CSU
alliance, which came top in the recent elections, and the centre-left
Social Democrats (SPD).Both parties are considering the quick
establishment of two special investment funds, one for the threadbare
German army and another to renovate the country's creaking
infrastructure. The amounts discussed for each of the funds are
"significantly higher" than the fund of 100 billion euros ($104 billion)
already set aside for the German army in 2022 after the Russian
invasion of Ukraine, according to the newspaper. Both sides' negotiators
looked at economist reports evaluating the needs of the German army at
400 billion euros and that of the country's infrastructure at half a
trillion euros, Bild added. The two funds are conceived as emergency
spending outside the federal budget and as such exempt from Germany's
"debt brake", which places a strict constitutional limit on how much the
state can borrow outside of crises.According to Bild both parties are
likewise considering relaxing that restriction, seen by a growing number
of Germans as a straitjacket ill suited to the challenges facing the
country. But any such reform would require a two-thirds majority in
parliament, which the proposed Conservative-Social Democrat coalition
would not have in the new legislature.
Iranian finance minister
fired amid spiraling economic crisis-Dismissal comes as rial nears
historic lows, inflation soars, and US sanctions tighten; president
defends minister Hemmati, says problems cannot be blamed ‘all on one
person’By Agencies 2 March 2025, 5:26 pm
Iran’s parliament sacked
the country’s finance minister on Sunday after impeaching him over
soaring inflation and a plunging currency, state television
reported.Economy and Finance Minister Abdolnaser Hemmati lost a vote of
confidence, with 182 of 273 parliamentarians present backing his
removal. The decision comes amid rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear
program and worsening relations with the West.Iran’s economy has been
severely affected by international sanctions, especially after the US
withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal. In 2015, the rial was worth 32,000
to the dollar, but by July, it had plummeted to 584,000. It dropped even
further recently, with exchange shops in Tehran trading 930,000 rials
for each dollar. The deal, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan
of Action, provided for an easing of sanctions and the return of Western
investment to Iran for increased limits on the country’s nuclear
activities.Earlier, President Masoud Pezeshkian defended Hemmati, a
former central bank governor, telling lawmakers: “We are in a full-scale
[economic] war with the enemy… we must take a war formation.”“The
economic problems of today’s society are not related to one person and
we cannot blame it all on one person.”Lawmakers took turns angrily
censuring Hemmati, blaming him for Iran’s economic woes.“People cannot
tolerate the new wave of inflation; the rise in the price of foreign
currency and other goods must be controlled,” said one parliamentarian,
Ruhollah Motefakker-Azad.“People cannot afford to buy medicine and
medical equipment,” said another, Fatemeh Mohammadbeigi .Pezeshkian took
office in July with the ambition of reviving the economy and ending
some Western-imposed sanctions. But the depreciation of the rial has only
intensified, especially since the fall in December of Iran ally Bashar
al-Assad of Syria. The day before his government was toppled in Damascus,
the US dollar was trading for around 717,000 rials on Iran’s black
market.“The rate of the foreign exchange is not real; the price is due
to inflationary expectations,” Hemmati said in his defense.“The most
important problem of the country’s economy is inflation, and that is
chronic inflation, which has plagued our economy for years,” the finance
minister added.US President Donald Trump, who returned to the White
House in January, has revived his policy of “maximum pressure” on Iran,
further tightening restrictions on the Islamic Republic but at the same
time calling for talks.Nevertheless, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei later rejected the idea of negotiations with the US
altogether.“I personally believe in dialogue, and I will continue to do
so,” said Pezeshkian during the impeachment session.“However, we will
stand by the position the supreme leader has taken regarding America
until the end, and we will not do anything else.”
US announces
airstrike that killed senior al-Qaeda leader in Syria-Strike targeting
top military commander in Hurras al-Din comes after the Islamist terror
group’s Syrian branch claimed to disband in wake of Assad regime’s
fall-By AFP 1 March 2025, 9:27 pm
WASHINGTON — The US Army said
Saturday it had killed a top military leader of Hurras al-Din, a Syrian
branch of al-Qaeda, which announced its dissolution in January. The US
Central Command (CENTCOM), in charge of American forces in the Middle
East, said in a statement that its forces on February 23 “conducted a
precision airstrike in Northwest Syria, targeting and killing Muhammed
Yusuf Ziya Talay, the senior military leader of the terrorist
organization Hurras al-Din.”Since Hurras al-Din announced in late
January that it was dissolving itself, US airstrikes have killed several
of the group’s leaders, according to CENTCOM.On February 22, it said a
“precision airstrike” had killed Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar, a leader of the
group, which the US classifies as a terrorist organization.American
forces are in Syria as part of an international coalition created in
2014 to fight the jihadists of the Islamic State group. After a rebel
alliance led by radical Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and took power in Damascus on December

US to deploy nearly 3,000 additional troops to southern border.
Washington,
March 1 (AFP) Mar 01, 2025-The United States will deploy nearly 3,000
additional troops to its border with Mexico, bringing the total number
of active-duty personnel there to around 9,000, the US military said
Saturday.Border security is a key priority for President Donald Trump,
who declared a national emergency at the US frontier with Mexico on his
first day in office."Approximately 2,400 soldiers from elements of the
2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 4th Infantry Division" will be
sent to the border, along with "approximately 500 soldiers from the 3rd
Combat Aviation Brigade," US Northern Command (NORTHCOM) said in a
statement. The Stryker unit "will not conduct or be involved in
interdiction or deportation operations," it said, but rather will assist
in detection and monitoring, administrative duties and transportation
and engineering support, among other tasks.Troops from the aviation unit
will meanwhile "assist in the movement of personnel, equipment, and
supplies; and provide aerial medical evacuation capabilities," NORTHCOM
said."These deployments will bring additional agility and capability to
further efforts to stop the flow of illegal migrancy and drugs at the
southern border," its commander, General Gregory Guillot said.- Trump
says 'invasion' is over -The Trump administration has launched what it
cast as a major effort to combat illegal migration that has included
immigration raids, arrests and deportations.Trump on Saturday hailed his
administration's border security efforts, posting on his Truth Social
platform that "the Invasion of our Country is OVER.""Thanks to the Trump
Administration Policies, the Border is CLOSED to all Illegal
Immigrants. Anyone who tries to illegally enter the U.S.A. will face
significant criminal penalties and immediate deportation," the president
wrote.Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth visited the southern frontier at the
beginning of last month, vowing that "we are going to get control of
this border."He warned drug cartels that "all options are on the table,"
after Trump signed an executive order in January that said they
"constitute a national security threat beyond that posed by traditional
organized crime."Hegseth also said that "any assets necessary" from the
Defense Department will be used to support "the expulsion and detention
of those in our country illegally," including the US base at Guantanamo
Bay in Cuba.Trump unveiled a surprise plan last month to hold up to
30,000 migrants at the base -- a facility notorious for abuses against
terror suspects detained after the September 11, 2001 attacks -- and US
forces have held dozens of people there in recent weeks, many of whom
have since been deported.
