evening targeted Hezbollah commander Ali Karaki, fueling speculation as
to whether the senior terror leader had been killed in the attack,
leaving the terror group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, alone at the top,
with Israel having eliminated almost all its leadership over the past 11
months.In a statement on Monday night, after security sources confirmed
that the strike had targeted Karaki, Hezbollah said that he was “fine
and, God willing, in full health and wellness and has moved to a safe

will prove advantageous in the event of a ground invasion of
Lebanon.Monday’s strikes are the latest in a series of blows against the
Shiite group. An Israeli airstrike on a Beirut suburb on Friday killed
top Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil and other leaders of Hezbollah’s
elite Radwan force.That operation came days after thousands of
communications devices, used mainly by Hezbollah members, exploded in
different parts of Lebanon, killing 39 people and wounding nearly 3,000.

Airbase.Last week, the security cabinet also updated its official goals
for the ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza to include the “safe return of
the residents of the north to their homes.”For months, Israel hoped that
a hostage deal with Hamas would bring about at least a temporary
ceasefire in Lebanon. It now recognizes that the chances for a deal that
is acceptable to both sides is highly unlikely in the foreseeable
future, especially with IDF forces effectively standing in place on the
Philadelphi and Netzarim corridors and not applying any military
pressure on Hamas.Now Israel is applying increasing pressure on
Hezbollah, while leaving space for Nasrallah to say he has had enough.If
the strikes on Hezbollah’s rocket arsenal do not push Nasrallah to end
his attacks, Israel has further steps it can take to ramp up the
pressure. It can carry out massive strikes on Hezbollah’s Dahiyeh
stronghold in southern Beirut, and it could even start to target
Lebanese state infrastructure to try to force its weak northern neighbor
to fulfill its obligation to prevent attacks from its territory.If
Nasrallah still does not back down, it’s hard to see how Israel has any
choice other than ordering some sort of ground operation.If that
happens, Israel has also gone some way in preparing the ground for an
invasion. The beeper attacks — if Israel is indeed behind them —
rendered Hezbollah’s tactical communications system irrelevant, which
will make it much harder for commanders to give orders to fighters and
receive accurate reports from the field.It also took out hundreds, if
not thousands, of fighters from the terror group’s ranks within 48
hours.Hezbollah’s main deterrent against Israel is its rocket and
missile array, especially its long-range ones. The more Israel is able
to destroy them ahead of time, the less Israel’s home front will suffer,
and the chances that Hezbollah is able to hit strategic sites in Israel
will go downMeanwhile, the US Biden administration is doing whatever it
can behind the scenes to get Hezbollah to agree to a negotiated
ceasefire, after almost a year of efforts have borne no fruit.But it has
not used all of the potential tools in its kit. Iran, which could order
Hezbollah to back off if it wanted to, is perfectly content watching
Lebanese citizens suffer greatly, as long as Israelis suffer
moderately.What it fears, however, is direct attacks on its territory
and its forces. The US has refused to use that threat, though it could
be the best chance to forestall the war in Lebanon that the White House
has tried to head off.Recent US threats against Iran seem to have
worked. After Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran —
in what was widely believed to have been an Israeli operation — the US
warned of a “serious risk of consequences for Iran’s economy and the
stability of its newly elected government” if it attacks Israel. So far,
Tehran has chosen not to attack Israel directly, in contrast to its
unprecedented strike in April.With the US unlikely to issue a similar
message, and Tehran unlikely to rein Hezbollah in without such a threat,
the decision on the next stage of the fight remains in the hands of
Nasrallah. If he insists on continuing down the path he embarked on 11
months ago, he will witness the next steps in the IDF’s escalation
ladder, which culminates in a ground invasion.

questioned two more employees of a tech firm in a probe of the
communications devices delivered to Lebanese-based terror group
Hezbollah, which exploded in what appeared to be a series of coordinated
attacks widely blamed on Israel.Questions abounded over where the
devices came from and how they were supplied to the terror group after
hundreds of pagers and two-way radios detonated across Lebanon last
week, killing at least 39 people and wounding nearly 3,000.Though
Hezbollah and its patron, Iran, have blamed the attack on Israel,
Jerusalem has neither confirmed nor denied involvement.The New York
Times reported last week that rather than merely managing to tamper with
the devices at some stage of their production or distribution, Israel
actually “manufactured them as part of an elaborate ruse.”Israel’s
Channel 12 reported on Tuesday that whoever was responsible for the
attacks had set up a factory to build the devices from scratch — so that
“it won’t be a device that we will tamper with; it will be a device
that we will produce.” The ability to supply the device to Hezbollah was
helped by the fact that the terror group is not able to make purchases
on the open market, because of suppliers’ fears of sanctions from the
United States, and therefore must routinely work with intermediary
suppliers, the TV report said.The whole scheme was dreamed up by a
brilliant female intelligence operative, aged less than 30, somewhere in
the Middle East, investigative reporter Ronen Bergman told Channel 12
in the report, which was approved by Israel’s military censor.Taiwanese
investigators initially searched four locations and questioned two
people including Gold Apollo’s head Hsu Ching-kuang, who has denied

preparing to strike terror targets in the Beqaa Valley soon. Hezbollah
stores strategic weapons there, in civilian buildings, and uses the
population as a human shield and knowingly puts it in danger,” he
said.He said the residents of the Beqaa Valley can “see the action we
are taking in southern Lebanon” today. “Hezbollah intends to launch
these weapons towards Israeli territory, and we will not allow it,”

Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, said at
around 3 p.m. that civilians had two hours to leave before the military

footage of Hezbollah operatives preparing to launch a cruise missile
from within a civilian home in a southern Lebanon village. The building
was targeted in an airstrike.The cruise missile was identified by the
IDF as a Russian-made “DR-3,” which appeared to be a variant of the
Tupolev Tu-143 drone, also called VR-3.The IDF said the missile was
packed with some 300 kilograms of explosives and had a range of up to
200 kilometers.“Hezbollah puts you and your families in danger.
Hezbollah is planning to launch these weapons toward Israel, stay away
from them immediately for your own protection,” Hagari told Lebanese

about a year and has been done in a very impressive way,” he said.“We
are deepening our attacks in Lebanon. The sequence of operations
continues and will continue until we achieve our goal of returning the

between success and failure will depend on citizens entering protected
rooms and other areas in accordance with the instructions we give them.

Civilian efforts to equip IDF soldiers ramp up as

tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have shot up to new highs, Israeli
soldiers anticipating being deployed to the north are increasingly
turning for help to the civilian donation efforts that have kept them
stocked in Gaza.Adi Vaxman, who heads the US-based donation effort
called Operation Israel, fields requests from individual soldiers and
says demand has spiked in tandem with security developments involving
Hezbollah.“With the situation up north, the demand has tripled in the
last few days,” Vaxman told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency last week. She
said the total requests by soldiers in September are on pace to reach
double the roughly 15,000 requests from August.Civilian volunteers have
been working for weeks to better understand the unique needs posed by
the intensifying conflict in the north, which is taking place across a
different terrain than Gaza and against Hezbollah, a group with more
advanced capabilities than Hamas.After conversations with senior
officers involved in military logistics, another civilian effort called
the Discretionary Fund for Israel, which is led by Shalem College
administrator Daniel Polisar, launched an $8 million fundraising drive
earlier this month.The dollar figure comes from a calculation of what
gear is needed — and which kind of items the military has recently
procured. Drones, for example, were one of the most requested items from
donors for many months, but the military is now distributing them in
large numbers, according to Polisar.In a fundraising email, Polisar
warned his donor pool that an escalation in the war was imminent and
soldiers were not sufficiently supplied for what was expected.“I’m
writing at one of the most difficult times Israel has faced since
Hamas’s atrocities of October 7 precipitated a multi-front war,” Polisar
wrote. “The evolving situation has created grave new risks for the

Polisar’s prediction has come much closer to reality. The Israeli
cabinet has declared as a war aim the return of 60,000 Israelis
displaced from their homes by Hezbollah’s rockets. Hundreds of pagers
and other communication devices exploded across Lebanon in attacks
targeting Hezbollah operatives which have been attributed to
Israel.Israel also assassinated top Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil and
other top officials in an airstrike over the weekend. Hezbollah chief
Hassan Nasrallah declared Israel has “crossed a red line,” and the
Israeli military has redeployed a large fighting division from Gaza to
the northern border.Over the weekend, tensions escalated sharply. Israel
battered Hezbollah positions inside Lebanon, including in Beirut far
from the border, as well as a meeting of Hezbollah commanders who Israel
said were planning an October 7-style invasion of the north. Meanwhile,
Hezbollah sent dozens of rockets deep into Israeli territory, injuring
several and sparking fires in populated areas.Whether the conflict will
evolve to include ground fighting remains to be seen. But Israeli
soldiers worrying that any effort to secure the north would necessarily
include an invasion have continued to request basic combat items like
helmets and ceramic plates for body armor as they have done in Gaza —
and donors have begun adding other kinds of equipment as well.SmThe size
of the battlefield in the north is larger than Gaza, which has been
characterized by close-quarter urban combat. Drones must fly over longer
ranges, which calls for different types of batteries and special
antennas, according to Vaxman.Hezbollah has its own drones, which fly
into Israeli territory to drop bombs on Israeli positions, so soldiers
are asking for special protective netting.Weather is also a factor as
winter months approach and temperatures drop, especially at high
elevations. The uneven topography of northern Israel and southern
Lebanon also makes it more difficult for the Israeli army to detect
threats, which is why soldiers have asked for special surveillance
cameras.Jews in the Diaspora who have been asked repeatedly since
Hamas’s attack last October to help buy soldiers combat gear have
largely responded with an open checkbook, but they have also expressed
alarm about the implication that the military cannot supply
itself.Polisar received a wave of questions reflecting such concerns
after his fundraising email and then addressed them in a follow-up
message.His email noted the immense scale of hostilities Israel is
facing and praised military leaders for ramping up their purchasing to
meet billions of dollars in equipment needs.“Even so, there are certain
critical areas in which the IDF has not fully succeeded in rendering our
soldiers as safe and effective as possible in the short time horizons
dictated by war-time conditions,” Polisar wrote. “In a perfect world,
the Israeli army would take care of everything, my team and I would not
need to raise funds and purchase gear, and I would not be asking you to
consider once again stretching your limited resources.”In another
possible sign of how serious the need for more equipment is, earlier
efforts by the military to stop the flow of donations to individual
units appear to have receded. In July, the commander of Israel’s ground
forces, Tamir Yadai, warned his troops about rules against accepting
donations and threatened heightened enforcement. He also called for
officers to inventory all donated supplies and confiscate equipment that
doesn’t match IDF standards.Yadai’s order had a chilling effect on
donors, who feared that their contributions would go to waste, according
to multiple fundraising groups.Since then, however, Yadai has resigned
from the military. And officers are not taking action to stop donations,

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has ordered
all members to stop using any type of communication device after
thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members in
Lebanon blew up in deadly attacks last week, two senior Iranian security
officials told Reuters.One of the security officials said a large-scale
operation is underway by the IRGC to inspect all devices, not just
communication equipment. He said most of these devices were either
homemade or imported from China and Russia.Iran was concerned about
infiltration by Israeli agents, including Iranians on Israel’s payroll,
and a thorough investigation of personnel has already begun, targeting
mid- and high-ranking members of the IRGC, added the official, who
declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.“This
includes scrutiny of their bank accounts both in Iran and abroad, as
well as their travel history and that of their families,” the security
official said.Iran’s Foreign, Defense and Interior ministries were not
immediately available to respond to the comments made by the security
officials to Reuters.In a coordinated attack blamed on Israel and
targeting Hezbollah, pager devices detonated on Tuesday across the
Lebanese terror organization’s strongholds. On Wednesday, hundreds of
Hezbollah walkie-talkies exploded. The attacks killed 39 people and

are using end-to-end encryption in messaging systems,” he said.According

technical assessments, and several examples of exploded devices have
been sent to Tehran for examination by Iranian experts.Protecting
missile and nuclear facilities-Another Iranian official said the Islamic
Republic’s main concern was the protection of the country’s nuclear and
missile facilities, particularly those underground.“But since last
year, security measures at those sites have increased significantly,” he

Israel has never commented on this.“There has never, ever been such
tight security and extreme measures in place as there are now,” he
added, suggesting that security has been significantly increased beyond

powerful political, military and economic force in Iran with close ties

models and brands might vary, Iranian military communications equipment
was often developed domestically or sourced from a combination of local

of Monday morning was shot down by Israeli fighter jets, the military
said.It was at least the sixth attack from Iraq within 24 hours.Sirens
had sounded in several southern Golan Heights communities amid the early
Monday incident.According to the Israel Defense Forces, the drone made
its way toward Israel from Iraq by flying over Syria. It was shot down
by fighter jets outside of Israeli airspace, according to the
military.The Islamic Resistance in Iraq took responsibility for the
incident, saying on Monday morning that the group had targeted an
Israeli observation base in northern Israel with drones.The coalition of
pro-Iran armed groups said the attacks were launched “in support of our
people in Gaza.”Late Sunday night, sirens had sounded in numerous
communities in the Beit She’an Valley as interceptor missiles were
launched at another drone that had entered Israeli airspace.According to
the military, that drone had also been launched from Iraq, and it flew
over Syria before reaching Israel. The IDF did not elaborate on whether
the drone was intercepted. Military sources said it was likely downed,

Palestinians were reported wounded on Monday due to rockets fired by
Lebanon’s Hezbollah that struck the northern West Bank.The rocket was
part of a barrage of some 10 long-range projectiles that Hezbollah
launched at Israel, setting off sirens in several West Bank settlements
east of Tel Aviv.The IDF said the rockets struck open areas.The
Palestinian Authority’s official Wafa news agency reported that the two —
a 60-year-old man and an elderly woman — were hurt by “an unknown
rocket” that struck between homes in Deir Istiya, causing “significant
material damage.”Images from Deir Istiya showed the site of the impact
and damage to a nearby car and home.Wafa did not specify the condition
of the wounded Palestinians, but said they were taken to a
