12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

17 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?
18 And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;

At least 7 injured, some seriously, in Hamas rocket barrage fired from Rafah area-Terror group says it targeted troops near Gaza border * Gallant: Signs point to Hamas rejecting deal, Rafah op will begin in ‘very near future’40 rockets fired from Lebanon at northern Israel-By Emanuel Fabian-MAY 5,24

A barrage of some 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon at the Galilee Panhandle a short while ago, the IDF says. Some of the rockets were intercepted, according to the military. There are no reports of injuries in the attack.Initially, the IDF said some 65 rockets were launched, but it later lowered the number to 40.Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack.Earlier today, 20 rockets were fired by Hezbollah at Kiryat Shmona.

‘Nobody needs to tell me what to do’: PM pushes back on far-right pressure over Rafah-Netanyahu says Israel will not agree to ‘surrender’; Gallant says operation in south Gazan city could happen ‘very soon’; Ben Gvir accuses IDF chief of tying military’s hands-By Sam Sokol-Today, 4:14 pm-MAY 5,24

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reportedly pushed back against criticism from far-right ministers over the pace of Israeli operations in Gaza, telling members of his cabinet that “nobody needs to tell me what to do or how to do it.”According to Hebrew media reports, the prime minister declared that “things are happening and will happen” and that he “expect[s] unity from this table.”After Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced during the weekly cabinet meeting that an Israeli operation in Rafah — Hamas’s last remaining stronghold in southern Gaza — is close, a number of far-right ministers reportedly lashed out at the government’s handling of the conflict.“Over the last week, I have been very intensively involved in the preparation of the operation in Rafah – including today. The operation will happen soon, even very soon,” Gallant was reported saying. In response, Settlements and National Projects Minister Orit Strock launched a broadside, saying that Gallant had said that “negotiations will only be conducted under fire,” but this was now “not happening.” Indirect negotiations have been taking place in Cairo over the past several weeks.Weighing in, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir accused Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi of tying the hands of the armed forces, charging that they “do not let the IDF fight.”Pushing back, Netanyahu reportedly responded by insisting that “if anyone thinks we will abandon our intention to eliminate Hamas, they are wrong”. He further said that despite the delays, Israel will ultimately “eliminate Hamas.”As the ministers were arguing, protesters outside the building called for an immediate Rafah offensive. Before he entered the meeting, Sports and Culture Minister Miki Zohar told those gathered outside that accomplishing “the goals of the war are a necessary condition for the continued existence of the government,” Channel 12 reported. Also addressing the demonstrators outside the Prime Minister’s Office, Finance Minster Bezalel Smotrich called for an immediate military incursion into Rafah, declaring that he would not allow Netanyahu and his fellow cabinet members to “extinguish the spirit of heroism.”In a video message later on Sunday afternoon, Netanyahu doubled down on his promise not to end the war before Hamas is defeated, emphasizing in no uncertain terms that Israel will not agree to an end to the campaign and the withdrawal of IDF troops from the Strip.“Israel cannot accept this,” he said. “We are not prepared to accept a situation in which the Hamas battalions come out of their bunkers, take control of Gaza again, rebuild their military infrastructure, and return to threatening the citizens of Israel in the surrounding communities, in the cities of the south, in all parts of the country.”“Israel will not agree to Hamas’s demands, which mean surrender, and will continue the fighting until all its goals are achieved,” Netanyahu declared.Responding to Netanyahu’s video, Ben Gvir issued a statement repeating his demand for an immediate Rafah operation.“We did not attack Gaza and we got October 7. We didn’t attack Rafah and we got a targeted attack,” he said, referring to today’s rocket attack on the Kerem Shalom Crossing launched from the Rafah area.“Netanyahu, enter Rafah now,” Ben Gvir urged.Weekend discord over hostage deal-Sunday’s disagreements in the cabinet occurred against the backdrop of rumors of international pressure on Israel to agree to an effective end to the war in Gaza as part of a hostage release deal.Senior officials from the US, Qatar and Egypt were taking part in talks in Cairo, as are Hamas officials — although Netanyahu decided not to send a delegation at this stage. In response to the reports of a possible end to the hostilities in exchange for the hostages, an Israeli official, speaking anonymously to the media on Saturday, repeated Jerusalem’s insistence that “Israel will under no circumstances agree to end the war as part of an agreement to free our abductees.”The official added: “The IDF will enter Rafah and destroy the remaining Hamas battalions there — whether there is a temporary pause to free our captives or not.”The same official put out a second statement later to the same effect, saying any claims Israel had agreed to end the war “are untrue.”A number of media outlets named the official who put out the two statements as Netanyahu himself.Signaling discord within the Israeli leadership, war cabinet Minister Benny Gantz criticized those comments.“I advise the ‘official sources’ and all other decision-makers to wait for official updates, to act with restraint and not to become hysterical due to political reasons,” he said in a statement on Saturday afternoon, apparently referencing far-right pressure on Netanyahu not to agree to a deal that could be perceived as a win for Hamas.Gantz added that when Hamas does submit a response, the war cabinet will convene to deliberate it.United Torah Judaism MK Moshe Gafni lashed out at Gantz for issuing his statement on Shabbat, but made no mention of the two statements Gantz had been responding to — widely reported to have been issued by Netanyahu’s office — which were also released during the Sabbath.History of threats-Both Ben Gvir and Smotrich have repeatedly expressed vehement public opposition to a deal scaling back or temporarily halting the fighting, both saying it would undermine the government’s right to exist and lead to its dissolution.Slamming the Netanyahu government for making what he said were dangerous “strategic concessions” in order to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, Smotrich last week appeared to threaten to bolt the coalition if it approved the agreement currently being negotiated in Egypt.“A government that submits to international pressure, stops the war in the middle, avoids immediate entry into Rafah and returns to Egyptian mediation proposals that leave Hamas existing in any configuration will at that moment lose its right to exist,” Smotrich stated following a meeting of his Religious Zionism party last Tuesday. His announcement came shortly after Ben Gvir stated, following a private meeting with the prime minister, that Netanyahu had promised not to agree to a “reckless” hostage deal.“I warned the prime minister [of the consequences] if, God forbid, Israel does not enter Rafah, if, God forbid, we end the war, if, God forbid, there will be a reckless deal,” Ben Gvir said in a video statement.Ben Gvir has more than once threatened to bolt the coalition over the conduct of the war, including early last week when he tweeted that a “reckless deal equals the dissolution of the government.”Responding to Ben Gvir and Smotrich’s threats and rhetoric last week, National Unity Minister Gadi Eisenkot, an observer in the war cabinet, slammed what he described as political blackmail.“The cabinet defined the goals of the war six months ago. Over the last day, two cabinet members have been blackmailing with political threats,” Eisenkot said.Lazar Berman and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

How Yad Vashem is implementing AI to give every Holocaust victim a name-The World Holocaust Remembrance Center works to pinpoint victim names previously lost among 230 million text documents; museum seeks to record 5 million victim names by 2029-By Matt Lebovic
Today, 4:14 pm-MAY 5,24

Like many Holocaust survivors, Olga Katz gave Yad Vashem in Jerusalem the names of her immediate family members murdered in the genocide.Born in Belgium in 1933, Katz survived the war hidden in a convent with false papers. In 2017, she gave Yad Vashem an interview in which she shared the names of her immediate family members who were murdered. However, Katz did not share the names of her more distant relatives.“By feeding her testimony through our innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, Yad Vashem was able to extract the names of additional family members, previously unknown, who were murdered in Auschwitz during the Holocaust — including [Katz’s] grandmother, uncles and nephews,” Shira Roth of Yad Vashem’s Information Technology Division told The Times of Israel.Katz’s family members were among 73,000 victim names added to Yad Vashem’s central database in 2023. While some of the names were added by people filling out Pages of Testimony — the traditional means through which the name of someone murdered in the Holocaust has been reported to Yad Vashem — increasingly, new names are being located through an AI-based pilot program.AI allows millions of documents to be sorted and triangulated to uncover overlooked information. Software can make connections within Yad Vashem’s massive archive that a human worker would not have the time or ability to make.In the years ahead, the museum — whose name in Hebrew means “a memorial and a name” — will make expanded use of AI to pinpoint previously unidentified victims, said spokesperson Simmy Allen.Since the 1950s, more than 4,900,000 Holocaust victim names have been recorded by Yad Vashem. Many Jewish families and communities were totally destroyed by the Nazis, leaving no one behind to record their names as victims.“AI helps us by reviewing testimonies and extracting names that have until now gone unnoticed,” said Allen. “Up until recently we predominantly relied on human intervention, however this process is extremely time-consuming.”Each year, millions of documents are donated to Yad Vashem, said Allen.“Within the next three to five years, Yad Vashem hopes to reach more than 5,000,000 names. Yet, as we move further away from the events of the Holocaust, our work becomes much more challenging,” said Alexander Avram, director of Yad Vashem’s Shoah Names Recovery Project.Yad Vashem houses 230 million pages of text documents, in addition to more than half a million photographs. This summer, a permanent, underground archive — six stories deep — will open to the public.‘Reliability and precision’The term Artificial Intelligence is used widely, but what AI means is not well understood. Before an AI model could be deployed at Yad Vashem, researchers had to determine how the names on their war-era lists could be sorted by AI, said Roth.“Our initial step was to identify and understand the database NER (Named Entity Recognition) and the Relation Extraction,” said Roth.“We trained a SPAcY model. This model, combined with pattern matching techniques, yielded an impressive accuracy rate exceeding 95%,” Roth told The Times of Israel.Whereas the museum’s technology once consisted of black binders with Pages of Testimony, staffers now deploy AI tools that were unfathomable a generation ago.“To further bolster the reliability and precision [of our model], we integrated substantial logical code, collaborating closely with content experts from Yad Vashem,” said Roth. The award-winning AI tool developed by Roth and her colleagues yielded remarkable results in the case of a survivor previously known only as Swajlach, a veterinarian from Lithuania.“ Swajlach was married to Eta Grudzanski, who is listed as having been murdered in 1941, in Jurbarkas,” said Avram.A pivotal link to the name Swajlach was in the testimony of survivor Menachem Lichtenstein, who spoke about a man named Peter Swajlach who was married to a woman named Etele.“This testimony also refers to six other members of the Grudzinski family, most probably Etele’s relatives,” said Avram.Swajlach and his wife were murdered by Lithuanian “locals,” said Avram. No one ever filled out Pages of Testimony for their couple’s relatives, but Yad Vashem’s AI tool connected the Grudzinski family to Swajlach through Lichtenstein’s testimony.“Thanks to [AI] these names can now be added to the database so we can restore an identity from the oblivion of the Holocaust, and also give a better picture of who they were before they fell victim to antisemitism,” said Avram.

Antisemitism seems to have 'taken firm root' in US academia-Antisemitism surging, report finds, prompting fear for future of ‘Jewish life’ in West-The US saw a 103% increase in incidents fueled by Gaza war, a global report for 2023 shows, while France stands out with near-quadrupling of cases-By Canaan Lidor-Today, 11:07 amUpdated at 1:05 pm-MAY 5,24

In 2023, France registered the highest increase in recorded antisemitic incidents of any country with reliable statistics, according to data released in a new report that warned that current trends could threaten the very “ability to lead Jewish lives in the West.”Published Sunday by Tel Aviv University and the Anti-Defamation League, the report showed a near-quadrupling of incidents in France, from 436 in 2022 to 1,676 last year. It also highlighted antisemitism on US campuses, which the head of the ADL called the “most alarming” aspect of the surge of Jew-hatred in the United States.Of last year’s antisemitic incidents in France, the tally showed that 74% happened after October 7, when invading Hamas terrorists killed some 1,200 people in Israel and abducted another 253, triggering a still-ongoing military campaign by Israel in Gaza and daily exchanges of fire with Hezbollah along the border with Lebanon. In the United States, the tally more than doubled, from 3,697 incidents in 2022 to 7,523 last year, with 52% of the 2023 total occurring after October 7. In Canada, the increase was from 65 to 132; in the United Kingdom from 1,662 to 4,103; in Germany from 2,639 to 3,614, and in Italy from 241 to 454.On an incident-per-capita basis, French Jews, who according to the report number about 440,000, were three times likelier to experience an antisemitic attack than Jews in the US, whose population the report estimates at 6 million.“For those whose views serve an anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist ideological and instrumentalist purpose, October 7 was a golden opportunity to advance further their hateful and racist fringe perspectives into mainstream conservative discourse, using it to attack rivals, mobilize supporters and attract new followers,” wrote the authors of the US chapter of the report, which is titled “Antisemitism Worldwide Report for 2023.”The authors of the chapter on France interviewed Jonas Jacquelin, the rabbi of the Copernic Street Synagogue, the first Reform synagogue in France. He does not wear his kippa on the street, partly because he was raised not to and in part because he does not want to provoke antisemitic attacks, the authors wrote.“The year is not 1938, not even 1933,” Prof. Uriya Shavit, head of The Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry and the Irwin Cotler Institute, wrote in a press release. “Yet if current trends continue, the curtain will descend on the ability to lead Jewish lives in the West – to wear a Star of David, attend synagogues and community centers, send kids to Jewish schools, frequent a Jewish club on campus, or speak Hebrew.”The 148-page report features an essay devoted to antisemitism on US campuses, where the ADL recorded 913 incidents in 2023, or 12% of the annual tally for the entire country.“Antisemitism today seems to have taken firm root in the academy,” the author of that essay, Dr. Sara Yael Hirschhorn, wrote. On campuses across the US, anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian students have staged demonstrations that included the occupation of campus buildings and other disruptions and led to clashes with police, who have arrested hundreds of student protesters. A standoff at Columbia University in New York City between police and students occupying campus grounds ended in fresh arrests last week.“Jewish and pro-Israel students have been physically assaulted, verbally harassed, bullied online, and generally made to feel unsafe on campus, while Jewish fraternities, Hillel and Chabad houses, and even dorm rooms have been vandalized,” Hirschhorn added.Nearly 75% of American university students have said they experienced or witnessed some form of antisemitism since the academic year began, the ADL report notes.“All this occurred as the leadership of academia fell silent, particularly at America’s most elite universities,” wrote Hirschhorn. She connected that reality, as she described it, to ethnic studies and discourses that vilify Jews and Israel as colonialist or oppressive; prevailing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) frameworks that fail to account for antisemitism; and Qatari and other funding from the Middle East.“By dint of their affiliations, campuses sponsored by despotic and anti-Zionist regimes are sometimes silent partners to rampant human rights abuses and illiberal agendas,” Hirschhorn wrote. In his essay in the report, Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the ADL, called the proliferation of antisemitism on US university campuses the “most alarming” aspect of the national surge of Jew-hatred after October 7.“We have seen instances where Jewish students barricaded themselves in a library because a pro-Palestinian mob was outside. We have heard stories of students being afraid to cross their campuses at night for fear of being attacked, or attending Shabbat dinners at their Hillels with armed guards posted at the doors,” wrote Greenblatt. These and other events on US campuses, he added, mean that “the Jewish community is facing a crisis unseen in generations.”

UK to probe possible cover-up of Nazi camps on English Channel island-Victims from 20 countries were sent to Alderney, including hundreds of French Jews; Britain released Nazi culprits in 1945 without prosecution, despite Allied war crime agreement-By ToI Staff Today, 12:13 pm

A United Kingdom commission of inquiry into Nazi atrocities on the English Channel island of Alderney during World War II will investigate why the wartime British government decided against prosecuting the German officers responsible for the crimes, The Guardian reported Saturday. The German army, which conquered Britain’s dependencies in the English Channel after the Allies’ defeat in the 1940 Battle of France, set up labor and concentration camps — but no extermination camps — on the self-governing Channel island of Alderney, the only known instance of Nazi camps on British soil.Prisoners from some 20 countries, including hundreds of French Jews, were sent to the island, where slave laborers constructed a forward part of Adolf Hitler’s so-called “Atlantic Wall” — a coastal wall of defenses with which the führer hoped to forestall an Allied incursion into the continent. The British government — which recaptured the Channel Islands in 1945 — decided against prosecuting the German officers detained there, including major Carl Hoffman, Alderney’s wartime commandant, despite the Allies’ 1943 Moscow Declaration agreement that Nazi war criminals be tried in the countries where they had perpetrated their crimes. In 1981, the Guardian revealed that multiple Nazi officers responsible for atrocities at Alderney were living freely in Germany.Hundreds of people are known to have been killed at the Alderney camps, and many more were sent to extermination camps on the continent, but problems in documentation and the Germans’ practice of dumping inmates’ corpses at sea have prevented the commission of inquiry from determining the precise extent of atrocities — the inquiry’s original goal. However, the committee had been pressed from the start to investigate why the Nazi war criminals had never stood trial in Britain.“This is important not just because these events happened on British soil, but because the barbarity and inhumanity were felt with full force here,” Lord Pickles, the UK government’s Holocaust envoy, told the Guardian. “From the very beginning, the big question was why there were no war crimes trials for the atrocities committed there.”A preview into the Alderney Expert Review which I am coordinating, which is currently consuming my waking hours (and dreams). It is almost complete and I am damn proud of the team's work!https://t.co/FkPw6yai2T— Dr Gilly Carr ???????????????????????? (@CarrGilly) May 4, 2024-Pickles was goaded to extend the inquiry by Prof. Anthony Glees, an intelligence expert who had advised prime minister Margaret Thatcher’s 1989 committee investigating Nazi war crimes, and whose call was backed by Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge, a daughter of Jewish refugees who had fled the Nazis.“What is truly shocking and needs to be emphasized is that, beyond the numbers, it is absolutely true that the Nazis brought their exterminatory mindset to Alderney and were involved in the most unspeakable and unimaginable brutality and sadism on the island that led to many deaths,” Glees was quoted as saying in the report. “Lord Pickles asked me to find out why those responsible were not brought to justice.”Prof. Dan Plesch, a war crimes expert, compiled a dossier of historic documents for the committee’s review that, according to the report, showed how the British government had consistently missed opportunities to try German officers for crimes committed at Alderney.Illustrative: German WWII bunker ‘The Odeon’ in Alderney. The bunker is about three to four stories high and has an anti-aircraft emplacement at the back. (CC-SA-Tim Brighton)-Among the documents was a United Nations War Crimes Commission report describing atrocities on the island as “systematic terrorism,” which included “murder and massacre” and the “torture of civilians.”The fact that the UN commission, which operated between 1943 and 1948, had produced such a document showed the British government had missed opportunities to try Nazi officers responsible for the atrocities, the report said.“Nazi crimes on Alderney, including extermination and casual shootings, were indicted by an international legal authority in the 1940s that Britain led,” Plesch told the Guardian, adding: “The accused should have been tried in a British court for crimes committed on British soil under British war crimes law.”

Police officers and Communications Ministry inspectors arrive at Al Jazeera’s Jerusalem offices to confiscate the Qatari channel’s broadcast equipment.Video footage sent out by the office of Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, who led the charge to ban the channel, shows the Israeli officials entering Al Jazeera’s East Jerusalem office and beginning to document the equipment inside. The move comes just hours after the government voted to shutter Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel for 45 days, in line with a temporary law passed in April allowing foreign media outlets to be temporarily closed if they are suspected of harming national security.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement ahead of Yom Hashoah, Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, cites comments made to him by Holocaust survivors about gentiles who make promises not being trustworthy, and says the lesson to learn from the Holocaust is that if the Jewish nation doesn’t protect itself, nobody else will.“Tonight we will commemorate the millions of our brothers and sisters who were murdered in the Holocaust,” Netanyahu says in a statement hours before the annual commemoration, which begins on Sunday evening.Meeting with Netanyahu, two of the six survivors scheduled to light one of six torches representing the Holocaust’s six million victims at Yad Vashem this evening declared that the Jewish state “is the one and only refuge for the Jewish people” and that “gentiles who make promises are not to be trusted,” Netanyahu recalls.“These heroic survivors are right. In the terrible Holocaust, there were great leaders in the world who stood by, so the first lesson of the Holocaust is this: If we don’t protect ourselves, no one will protect us. And if we have to stand alone, we will stand alone,” he says.“Therefore, we will defend ourselves in every way, overcome our enemies and ensure our security — in the Gaza Strip, on the northern border, everywhere.”

25 arrested at University of Virginia amid pro-Palestinian campus activity across US-Dozens arrested for criminal trespass outside the Art Institute of Chicago; students disrupt Michigan University commencement ceremony-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 8:47 am-MAY 5,24

Twenty-five people were arrested Saturday for trespassing at the University of Virginia as police clashed with pro-Palestinian protesters who refused to remove tents from the campus.Students across the US have rallied or set up tents at dozens of universities to protest the months-long war in Gaza and call on US President Joe Biden, who has supported Israel, to do more to stop the bloodshed in Gaza. They also demand their schools divest from companies that support Israel’s government, such as arms suppliers. The University of Virginia said in a news release that protesters had violated several university policies including setting up tents on Friday night and using amplified sound. On Saturday, a video from WVAW-TV showed police wearing heavy gear and holding shields lined up on the campus in Charlottesville. Protesters chanted “Free Palestine,” and university police said on the social platform X that an “unlawful assembly” had been declared in the area.In a statement, school president Jim Ryan said demonstrators were told the tents and canopies they erected were prohibited under school policy and were asked to remove them. Virginia State Police were asked to help with enforcement when attempts by university police “to resolve the situation were met with physical confrontation and attempted assault.”“This afternoon, the police declared an unlawful assembly, issued no-trespass orders to those who refused to disperse, and arrested those who continued to refuse dispersal,” Ryan said.He called the episode “upsetting, frightening, and sad,” blaming a small group of rule-breakers for the trouble and claiming, without evidence, that they included people unaffiliated with the school.University of Virginia just got wild as Virginia State Police were attacked by pro-Palestine extremists.Police were forced to respond by spraying tear gas, using their shields and arresting the attackers. pic.twitter.com/wy6jUrx6Yi— ShivRaj Yadav (@shivayadav87_) May 5, 2024-As police moved in, students were pushed to the ground, pulled by their arms, and sprayed with a chemical irritant, Laura Goldblatt, an assistant professor of English and global studies who has been helping student demonstrators, told The Washington Post.“Our concern since this began has been the safety of our students. Students are not safe right now,” Goldblatt said.Dozens of people were also arrested for criminal trespass outside the Art Institute of Chicago at a demonstration on Saturday after the institute called in police to remove protesters it said were illegally occupying its property, the Chicago Police Department said on X. Administration has called in the SWAT team and begun making arrests at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Gaza solidarity encampment. pic.twitter.com/g3xHbuBmeq — War Watch (@WarWatchs) May 4, 2024-Also on Saturday, students at the University of Michigan chanted anti-war messages and waved flags during commencement ceremonies. The protest occurred at the beginning of the event at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. About 75 people, many wearing traditional Arabic kaffiyehs along with their graduation caps, marched up the main aisle toward the graduation stage. They chanted, “Regents, regents, you can’t hide! You are funding genocide!” while holding signs, including one that read: “No universities left in Gaza.”Overhead, planes flew banners with competing messages. “Divest from Israel now! Free Palestine!” and “We stand with Israel. Jewish lives matter.”Officials said no one was arrested, and the protest didn’t seriously interrupt the nearly two-hour event, which was attended by tens of thousands of people, some of them waving Israeli flags.State police prevented the demonstrators from reaching the stage and university spokesperson Colleen Mastony said public safety personnel escorted the protesters to the rear of the stadium, where they remained through the conclusion of the event.“Peaceful protests like this have taken place at U-M commencement ceremonies for decades,” she added.US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro paused a few times during his remarks due to the protests. Before administering an oath to graduates in the armed forces, Del Toro said they would “protect the freedoms that we so cherish,” including the “right to protest peacefully.”The university has allowed protesters to set up an encampment on campus, but police assisted in breaking up a large gathering at a graduation-related event Friday night, and one person was arrested.Protests at other universities also led to tensions around graduation ceremonies. Indiana University’s student newspaper reported that pro-Palestinian protests briefly interrupted the school’s main commencement ceremony, with demonstrators shouting “free Palestine” and “resign” several times during speeches by IU President Pamela Whitten and Provost Rahul Shrivastav. The Daily Student reported that friction flared near the school’s iconic Sample Gates as graduates attempting to take post-commencement pictures were disturbed by protesters holding signs and chanting. Two separate people confronted the demonstrators, yelling at them, the newspaper reported, and protesters then returned to their main encampment.Planes pulling pro-Palestinian banners were reportedly also spotted flying over that ceremony.Spotted above the stadium that's currently holding Indiana University's commencement ceremony. Protest organizers said in a statement that they were “deeply angered and disappointed” that negotiations with the university had failed. The protests stem from the conflict that started October 7 when the Palestinian terror group Hamas led a devastating cross-border attack on southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 253 people of all ages hostages in Gaza. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 34,000 people in the Strip have been killed in the fighting so far, a figure that cannot be independently verified and includes some 13,000 Hamas gunmen Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.Demonstrators have gathered on at least 40 US university campuses since April 17, often erecting tent camps to protest against the soaring death toll in the Gaza Strip.Nearly 2,000 people have been detained, according to US media, in demonstrations reminiscent of protests against the Vietnam War.The Associated Press has recorded at least 61 incidents since April 18 in which arrests were made at protests, with more than 2,400 people being arrested on 47 campuses. The figures are based on AP reporting and statements from universities and law enforcement agencies. Some schools have reached agreements with protesters to end the demonstrations and reduce the possibility of disrupting final exams and commencements. In recent days, police have forcibly dismantled several student sit-ins, including one at New York University at the request of its dministrators. Demonstrators barricaded inside Columbia University, the epicenter in New York of the student protests, complained of police brutality when officers cleared the faculty. At the University of California, Los Angeles, hundreds of police emptied a camp, tearing down barriers and detaining more than 200 protesters.Israel and its supporters have branded the university protests antisemitic, while Israel’s critics say it uses those allegations to silence opposition. Although protesters have been caught on camera making antisemitic remarks and violent threats, protest organizers say theirs is a peaceful movement to defend Palestinian rights and protest the war.

Inside story'It was my dream school, but I won't go even if accepted'‘Good Jews oppose Zionism’: French Jewish students say campus no longer a safe space-Post-October 7 anti-Israel agitation and the antisemitism it unleashed are pushing promising candidates away from French schools. Last week’s protests may be the tipping point-By Canaan Lidor-Today, 2:10 pm-MAY 5,24

A straight-A student in her final year of high school, Esther is within reach of her first life goal as an adult: Getting accepted into the law or geopolitics program of the ultra-prestigious Paris Institute of Political Studies, or Sciences Po.In recent months, however, Esther (who requested that her last name be withheld due to the sensitivity of the subject) has cooled off the goal that had guided her for years. She cites aggressive and protracted anti-Israel agitation on campus that she and many other critics (French-language link) say is spilling over to antisemitism without a firm response from authorities. Esther now considers Sciences Po unsuitable for a Jew who does not wish to hide their identity or support of Israel.“It used to be my dream,” Esther tells The Times of Israel about studying at Sciences Po. “But now, honestly, I wouldn’t go even if I’m accepted.”Esther’s disillusionment with Sciences Po is shared widely among the French-Jewish community. Like many American Jews who are horrified by the anti-Israel mobilization on US campuses, French Jews perceive this development — and the antisemitism they say characterizes it — as portending a shift in their ability to prosper in France. The anti-Israel mobilization has been simmering for years at many French campuses, and Jewish student groups see it as linked to an increase in antisemitism. In a poll (French) from September, 91% of French Jewish students sampled said they had encountered an antisemitic incident during their studies. But the problem exploded after October 7, when about 3,000 Hamas terrorists murdered some 1,200 Israelis and abducted another 252. Israel’s ongoing incursion into Gaza to topple Hamas has prompted a global wave of protest, as well as a spike in antisemitic incidents in France and beyond. In France, many fear this wave means that anti-Jewish attitudes have returned to universities that for decades after World War II had been the main vehicle for upward social mobility by Jews and others. Higher education has been key to the success of France’s Jewish community, where most members were born to Holocaust survivors or impoverished immigrants from North Africa. At Sciences Po, anti-Israel activists began staging in March what they call “blockages,” occupying campus buildings, sometimes for days. That month, the protesters prevented one Jewish student leader from entering a Sciences Po campus building as other students were let through, prompting the UEJF Jewish student association to accuse the protesters of antisemitism. The blockages — there have been dozens across French campuses — feature multiple calls for a “global intifada,” a term many interpret as a call to harm Jews, and chants of “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” which critics say is a call for ethnic cleansing. In January, three Jewish students in Strasbourg were assaulted (French) for putting up posters raising awareness for the hostages in Gaza. Signs reading “no entry to Zionists” have become commonplace in French campuses, according to the UEJF.This development is occurring against an explosion of antisemitic hate crimes, of which the Jewish community watchdog SPCJ recorded in 2023 a total of 1,676 cases (more than the tallies of the previous three years combined). Nearly 75% of all cases recorded last year happened after October 7.French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal in an April 27 speech said that blockages would not be tolerated in France.Yet the handling of the blockages at Sciences Po, the flagship of French academia, and beyond left many feeling that the blockers had gotten a free pass.Negotiations with supporters of terrorists-On April 30, students at Sciences Po agreed to end their weeklong blockage after obtaining from the university administration an amnesty on any disciplinary action and a promise to arrange a campus debate about the war in Gaza. Despite the compromise, dozens of protesters returned to Sciences Po on Friday, prompting police to evacuate them from the campus building they had occupied. The compromise by Sciences Po’s administration, which had vowed (French) initially to be “uncompromising” in its actions against antisemitic intimidation and blockages, set it apart from some counterpart institutions in the United States, and especially Columbia University, where the administration called police to break up campus occupation actions, and arrest participants. At Sciences Po, “the administration lay down before the anti-Israel crowd and its antisemitism,” said historian Marc Knobel, who is a graduate of Sciences Po and who researches modern-day antisemitism.Jean Bassères, the caretaker director of Sciences Po, defended (French) the compromise in an interview published in Le Monde. An intervention by law enforcement “would be a difficult operation and not result in an end to the blockages,” he said. The Paris region authority punished Sciences Po for the compromise. On Tuesday, the  Île-de-France government suspended its annual funding of about $1 million for Sciences Po “until calm and security have been restored at the school,” region president Valerie Pecresse wrote on X. Sciences Po is heavily subsidized — taxpayers provide 37% of its annual budget of about $214 million — but most of the funding comes from the central government, which has not suspended it.The message that came out of the blockages, Knobel said, was: “You can disrupt studies, harass Jewish students and intimidate faculty into concessions — and get away with it.”‘Good Jews oppose Zionism’At Sciences Po and other French universities, some Jewish students feel unsafe.Lea Hanoune, a leader of the Union of French Jewish Students in France and a student at the Sorbonne University, said: “Many Jewish students like me feel unsafe when we hear slogans about intifada.” She added: “We have to be the ‘good Jews’ and oppose Zionism. If we’re ‘bad Jews’ who support Israel, we will be intimidated — or worse.”Sophie B., who also asked her last name be withheld from this article, recalled avoiding a certain bathroom on the campus of her Université Paris Cité because it had been defaced with the words “Free Palestine” in large letters and slogans accusing Israel of murdering children on the walls. The graffiti was removed following Sophie’s complaint, but it made her feel uneasy.“I try not to show my identity. I’m a secular Jew, so for me it’s normal,” she told The Times of Israel. At her university, she added, “I have never seen anyone wear a kippa or any religious Jewish sign.” The response to her initiatives in November to go with other Jews and hang up posters of the hostages were lukewarm. “People said they’re too scared,” she said.Political maneuvering-Knobel, the historian, is among the many French Jews who view the campus blockages and riots as an orchestrated push by one of France’s main political forces, the far-left LFI party of Jean-Luc Melenchon.“What we’re seeing isn’t a grassroots explosion of sentiment, although it’s sometimes framed this way,” Knobel said. “At Sciences Po and other campuses, we see the fingerprint of LFI’s incessant weaponization, by its top members and campus activists, of the Palestinian issue to strengthen its base with young voters .”Melenchon, a former communist who won 19% of the vote in the previous presidential elections and whom the CRIF umbrella of French Jewish communities has accused of stoking antisemitism, has called (French) Israel’s actions in Gaza “genocide.”His party has placed Rima Hassan, a French-Palestinian activist who is under a police investigation for justifying the October 7 onslaught, on its ticket for the European Parliament elections next month. She visited the Sciences Po blockage and danced and sang with the protesters. Melenchon, who in a 2017 speech had said about French Jews that “France is the opposite of aggressive communities that lecture to the rest of country,” has dismissed claims that he is encouraging antisemitism as an attempt to besmirch him.Melenchon and LFI have been vocal supporters of the blockages, advertising them on social media and announcing each new blockage approvingly. “After Columbia, Sciences Po and hundreds of faculties worldwide, the Sorbonne joins the vast movement of student solidarity with the Palestinian people,” LFI wrote on X recently, in a post that Melenchon shared (French) on his own X account. In her heavily Jewish and affluent suburb of Paris, Esther is weighing options along with her two brothers. Her older brother is preparing to study at the École Polytechnique, where he hopes to get on an exchange program with MIT or Harvard. But now, studying on an American campus seems much less desirable to him than it did before October 7, says Esther.“London, New York, Montreal: It’s the same, so I’m not sure how to choose. None of us do,” said Esther.Studying in Israel would solve the antisemitism issue, she said, but she doesn’t see herself living in Israel.“We’re kind of lost. We’re asking ourselves where to go, where will we encounter problems,” she says. “Now safety is suddenly a major criterion. It’s kind of crazy.”

Cheers and flames at Jerusalem’s ancient ‘Holy Fire’ event-Marking Orthodox Easter at Church of the Holy Sepulchre, worshipers spread flame they believe has miraculous origins-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 10:29 am-MAY 5,24

Bells and clamor, incense, and flames. One of the most chaotic gatherings in the Christian calendar is the ancient ceremony of the “Holy Fire,” with worshipers thronging the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Saturday.Cheers and prayers rang out as candles one by one were lit after reaching through a small opening into Jesus’ tomb. Soon, the dim chamber was lit by a constellation of handheld flames as part of the rite of Orthodox Easter week in Jerusalem. Worshipers believe the flame’s origin is a miracle. One man waved his flame back and forth as if anointing his beard, smiling. Some young men holding crosses jumped up and down in the crowd and chanted.“I am speechless, I don’t even know how to explain it,” said one worshiper, Angela Manoug. “It is my first time that I have seen the holy light, and I am very blessed by God to have seen it.”The ceremony for believers in Greek Orthodox communities has been held for more than a millennium. The church is built on the site where Christian tradition holds that Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected. There is not enough space for all who would like to attend, which has caused friction with authorities, and stampedes have occurred in the past. But Saturday’s event was joyous, if jostling, and reflective amid the Israel-Hamas war not far away to the south in the Gaza Strip.“This year is very sad, but I wish with the light of the holy fire from Jerusalem will give peace all around the world, thank you and happy Easter, Jesus is risen,” said a worshiper, Issa Assasieh, with flames in both fists.War erupted on October 7 when the Palestinian terror group Hamas led a massive cross-border attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians.Israel responded with a military campaign to destroy Hamas, topple its Gaza regime, and free the 252 hostages who were abducted from Israel during the Hamas attack.Israel captured the Old City, along with the rest of the city’s eastern half, in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it.Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of their hoped-for state.

'Canada is a rule-of-law country,' Trudeau says of charges in B.C. Sikh activist's killing-Comments come day after 3 Indian men charged with murder in Hardeep Singh Nijjar's death-CBC News · Posted: May 04, 2024 11:11 AM EDT | Last Updated: May 4

'Every Canadian has the fundamental right to live safely and free from discrimination and threats of violence,' Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told attendees at the Sikh Foundation of Canada gala in Toronto on Saturday following Friday's arrest of three men who were charged with murder in the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in B.C. last year.Social Sharing-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touted Canada as a "rule-of-law country" in comments on Saturday about arrests made in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader, as he sought to reassure Sikh Canadians that persecution won't be tolerated.Trudeau's comments came a day after three Indian men were arrested in Edmonton and charged with murder in the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.Nijjar, 45, was shot dead in June outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C., a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population. A few months later, Trudeau cited credible allegations of Indian government involvement, prompting a diplomatic crisis with New Delhi."This is important because Canada is a rule-of-law country with a strong and independent justice system, as well as a fundamental commitment to protecting all its citizens," Trudeau said Saturday at a Toronto gala celebrating Sikh heritage and culture."As the RCMP stated, the investigation remains ongoing, as does a separate and distinct investigation not limited to involvement of the three people arrested yesterday."A person speaks at a lectern as other watch on behind the speaker. The prime minister acknowledged that many in Canada's Sikh community are feeling unsafe following Nijjar's killing, adding: "Every Canadian has the fundamental right to live safely and free from discrimination and threats of violence in Canada."Nijjar was a Canadian citizen campaigning for the creation of Khalistan, an independent Sikh homeland carved out of India. The presence of Sikh separatist groups in Canada has long frustrated New Delhi, which had labelled Nijjar a "terrorist."Police make arrests in killing of B.C. Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar-Police in Canada said they had worked with U.S. law enforcement agencies, without giving additional details, and suggested more arrests might be coming.RCMP Assistant Commissioner David Teboul, the force's commander for the Pacific region, said Friday that he wouldn't comment on the alleged links between the three men arrested and Indian officials but noted the force is "investigating connections to the government of India."CBC's Evan Dyer breaks down what investigators revealed on Friday about the arrests of three men in connection with the killing of prominent Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., last June.Earlier on Saturday, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said his country will wait for police in Canada to share information on the three Indian men they arrested and charged.Jaishankar said he had seen news of the arrests and that the suspects "apparently are Indians of some kind of gang background ... we'll have to wait for the police to tell us.""But, as I said, one of our concerns which we have been telling them is that, you know, they have allowed organized crime from India, specifically from Punjab, to operate in Canada," he said.At an event on Saturday in the state of Odisha, Jaishankar criticized the Canadian government for allowing people with links to organized crime into the country. He also singled out Canada in a denunciation of several countries where he said pro-Khalistan voices held sway.A man wearing a suit walks on the street."Our biggest problem right now is in Canada, because in Canada, actually today the party in power in Canada ... [has] given these kind of extremism, separatism, advocates of violence a certain legitimacy in the name of free speech," Jaishankar said.Sanjay Verma, India's high commissioner to Canada, said India hopes to get regular updates from Canadian authorities regarding the three arrested Indians."I understand that the arrests have been made as a result of investigations conducted by the relevant Canadian law enforcement agencies. This issue is internal to Canada and therefore we have no comments to offer in this regard," Verma said. With files from Reuters.

India calls Canada arrests over Sikh activist murder ‘political compulsion’

Canada’s investigation into alleged Indian involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist in Vancouver last year is a “political compulsion”, India’s foreign minister has said after three Indian citizens were arrested over the killing.Canadian police on Friday arrested the trio for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, saying they were investigating their links to the Indian government, “if any”. He migrated to Canada in 1997 and acquired citizenship 18 years later. He was wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder, the allegations he had denied. On June 18, 2023, he was shot dead by masked assailants in the car park of the Sikh temple he led in suburban Vancouver.Nijjar’s killing sent diplomatic relations between Ottawa and New Delhi into a tailspin last year after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were “credible allegations” linking Indian intelligence to the crime.India rejected the allegations as “absurd”, temporarily halting the processing of visas and forcing Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country significantly.“It is their political compulsion in Canada to blame India,” the Press Trust of India news agency quoted India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar as saying on Saturday.New Delhi has sought to persuade Ottawa not to grant Sikh separatists visas or political legitimacy, Jaishankar said, since they are “causing problems for them [Canada], for us and also for our relationship”.He added that Canada does not “share any evidence with us in certain cases, [and] police agencies also do not cooperate with us”.Jaishankar said India will wait for the Canadian police to share information on the arrested men, adding that the suspects “apparently are Indians of some kind of gang background”.“We’ll have to wait for the police to tell us,” he said. “But, as I said, one of our concerns which we have been telling them is that, you know, they have allowed organised crime from India, specifically from Punjab, to operate in Canada.”The three Indian nationals, all in their 20s, were arrested in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta province, on first-degree murder and conspiracy charges. They were accused of being the attacker, driver and lookout in his killing last June. The Canadian police said they were aware that “others may have played a role” in the murder.Meanwhile, Trudeau, speaking on Saturday at an event in Toronto to celebrate Sikh heritage and culture, acknowledged that many Sikhs in Canada are “feeling uneasy, and perhaps even frightened right now”, but urged faith in the justice system.“Let us remain calm and remain steadfast in our commitment to our democratic principles and our system of justice,” he said.Trudeau said the arrests were “important because Canada is a rule of law country with a strong and independent justice system, as well as a fundamental commitment to protecting all its citizens”.Nijjar advocated for a separate Sikh state, known as Khalistan, carved out of India. Thousands of people were killed in the 1980s during the separatist movement, which was put down by the Indian security forces. The movement has largely petered out within India, but in the Sikh diaspora – whose largest community is in Canada, with about 770,000 people – it retains support among a vocal minority.India has warned governments in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom repeatedly that Sikh separatists were trying to make a comeback. In November, the US Department of Justice charged an Indian citizen living in the Czech Republic with allegedly plotting a similar assassination attempt on US soil.A Washington Post investigation found last week that Indian foreign intelligence officials were involved in the plot, a claim rejected by New Delhi.Source: News Agencies.

Advocate for separate Sikh state in India shot dead in Canada-This article is more than 10 months old-Hardeep Singh Nijjar, president of temple in British Columbia, found fatally injured in car park-Agence France-Presse in Ottawa-Tue 20 Jun 2023 10.08 BST

A campaigner for a Sikh nation to be carved out of India’s Punjab state who was wanted by Indian authorities has been shot dead in Canada, police have said.Federal police said a man was found in his pickup truck in the car park of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara temple in Surrey, British Columbia, at about 8.30pm on Sunday, with apparent gunshot wounds.“The man died of his injuries at the scene,” the Royal Canadian mounted police added. They did not initially identify the victim but later said he was 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the temple’s president who advocated for the creation of a Sikh state known as Khalistan. The police they were releasing his identity “in hopes of advancing their investigation”.Timothy Pierotti, a member of the force’s integrated homicide investigation team, added: “We understand there is a lot of speculation regarding the motive of this homicide, but we are dedicated to learning the facts and letting the evidence lead our investigation.”Nijjar was wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorism offences and conspiracy to commit murder, which he reportedly denied to Canadian media. He had been warned by Canada’s spy agency about threats against him, according to the World Sikh Organization of Canada, which alleged he was “assassinated in a targeted shooting”.It pointed to the killings or suspicious deaths of other prominent Khalistan activists in recent months: Avtar Singh Khanda, in Britain, and Paramjit Singh Panjwar, in Pakistan.India’s Punjab state – which is about 58% Sikh and 39% Hindu – was rocked by a violent Khalistan separatist movement in the 1980s and early 1990s, in which thousands of people died.Today, that movement’s most vocal advocates are primarily among the Punjabi diaspora.India has often complained to foreign governments, including Ottawa, about the activities of Sikh hardliners among the Indian diaspora who, it says, are trying to revive the insurgency. In March, Indian authorities summoned Canada’s top diplomat in Delhi after Sikh protesters gathered outside India’s diplomatic mission in Canada.

Number of study permits processed for Indian students has fallen, applicants from elsewhere are making up the difference-Julia Hornstein

Newly released data shows that the number of Canadian study permit applications processed for Indian students is down more than 40% since July of this year.Between July and October of 2022, the Canadian government processed almost 146,000 new study permit applications for Indian students. However, across the same period in 2023, the government has processed fewer than 87,000.This means that 60,000 fewer student visas were processed for Indian students from July to October 2023 than over the same period in 2022.Discover your options to study in Canada-The data comes from a recently released article by ApplyBoard, an online platform for international student recruitment, and suggests that this decline may be a result of more and more international students posting on social media about the hardships they have faced in Canada, specifically calling out the high cost of living. To test the theory, ApplyBoard conducted a sentiment analysis of top tier Indian media. It found that, between April and August of 2023, the number of articles written about housing in Canada increased fivefold versus the same period in 2022. In addition, the percentage of content flagged as negative rose from 12 to 30%.What is Canada doing to address the increased cost of living? In response to the inflationary pressures and an increased cost of living, the Government of Canada has introduced and retained several policies to help residents with their expenses. The Affordability Plan includes a variety of measures that represent the Canadian governments $12.1 billion CAD investment to increase affordability across the country. Some of these measures include cutting childcare fees by 50% in Ontario, increasing the Old Age Security (OAS) pension by 10% for seniors and indexing various benefits to be consistent with inflation. As of January 1st, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will raise the cost-of-living requirement for study permit applicants. The current requirement was brought in during the early 2000s and has not been adjusted since. IRCC says adjusting this requirement will prevent student vulnerability and exploitation by preparing students for the higher cost of living in Canada. Most provinces also have programs that cater to their residents, which include financial aid for medical expenses, workers benefits, and employment assistance for childcare. In addition, the provincial governments have the responsibility to provide affordable housing and housing support. Will fewer Indian students come to Canada? According to ApplyBoard, study permit approval rates need to be examined to assess the impact of actual student inflows.Study permit approval rates for Indian students have continued to climb. In fact, 32,000 more Indian students were approved to study in Canada from January to September this year than last year, despite the drop in applications processed. In 2022, Canada welcomed a record 551,405 international students from 184 countries. The number one source country of new international students entering Canada in 2022 was India, with 226,450 Indian students.Canada is on track to surpass the 2022 total for student visas approved for Indian students. If processing volumes remain near half of 2022 totals, ApplyBoard projects 200,000 to 210,000 Indian students will be approved to study in Canada in 2023, depending on how the current approval rate holds.International students beyond India-ApplyBoard’s insights also explained that students from countries other than India are still very interested in coming to study in Canada. In particular, from July to October 2023, the number of study permits processed for all other countries rose by 34%. As of December 2023, study permits processed are up 52% from last year’s total. The implication of this increase is a more diverse set of applicants to Canadian educational institutions. While Indian students have submitted nearly half of all student visas processed last year, they have accounted for just 36% in 2023.
