The BBC news network apologized over the weekend for a report late last month on its radio station in which it accused Israel Defense Forces troops of executing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.In a report that ran overnight on December 24, the BBC said, it ran a story about Hamas accusing the IDF of “carrying out summary executions in the Gaza Strip.”A statement from the BBC issued on Friday, almost two weeks after the initial report, said that “although the accusations were attributed and our story contained a response from the Israeli military saying they were unaware of the incident and that Hamas was a terrorist organisation that did not value truth, we had not made sufficient effort to seek corroborating evidence to justify reporting the Hamas claim. We apologise for this mistake.”According to Deadline, the BBC report appeared to have been based on an AFP article from December 23, which stated that Hamas claimed in a statement to have gathered testimonies showing “the Israeli army had carried out the summary execution of 137 Palestinian civilians” in the northern Gaza Strip, including Gaza City, since the start of Israel’s ground offensive on October 7.The article noted that the claims could not be independently verified, and that the IDF said it was “currently unaware” of any such incidents and that it was “at war with the Hamas terrorist organization who has proven that they do not value truth or accuracy.”The military said last week that it was investigating an incident in which a Palestinian detainee was shot dead in Gaza by a soldier who was guarding him, but there has been no evidence to support any of Hamas’s claims about mass executions by ground troops in the Strip.The BBC, the UK’s public broadcaster, has had to issue several apologies over its reporting of the Israel-Hamas war since the start of conflict on October 7.In mid-November, it apologized after one of its presenters said and then repeated that IDF soldiers who had entered Shifa Hospital in Gaza “were targeting people including medical teams and Arab speakers.”In fact, the original Reuters report quoted an IDF statement that upon entering Gaza’s largest hospital — which Israel says housed a Hamas command center — specially trained forces were accompanied by “medical teams and Arabic-speaking soldiers [who] are on the ground to ensure that [medical] supplies reach those in need.”The broadcaster was also slammed for its rush to report unverified and later-disproved claims that an Israeli airstrike was responsible for a deadly explosion at Gaza’s Al-Ahli Hospital on October 17. Saudi Arabia is still interested in pursuing a normalization deal with Israel after its war against Hamas in Gaza ends, an envoy from the Gulf nation said Tuesday.Prince Khalid bin Bandar, the Saudi ambassador to the UK, told the BBC in a radio interview that Riyadh is still open to establishing ties with the Jewish state as long as it is part of an overall two-state solution.“Absolutely there’s interest, there’s been interest since 1982 and before,” Bandar said of reaching a deal with Israel. “We’ve been at this for a long time, and willing to accept Israel for a long time, it’s a reality that’s there that we have to live with. Six troops were killed in an explosion in central Gaza and three others died during intense battles in the south of the Strip, Israel’s army announced Tuesday, as heavy fighting persisted a day after military leaders indicated that combat was shifting into lower gear after over three months of war.The deadly setbacks came as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the region to discuss Israel’s transition to a new phase in the punishing conflict, with the Israel Defense Forces largely in control of northern Gaza, but continuing to face resistance during pushes into central Gaza and the metropolis of Khan Younis in the south of the Strip, where the army said it was expanding operations.The deaths, which occurred Monday, raised the toll in Israel’s offensive to 185 since troops invaded the Strip in late October on a campaign to eliminate the Strip’s Hamas rulers and free hostages kidnapped during the terror group’s October 7 onslaught.The army said the six reservists, all combat engineers, were killed when explosives intended for demolishing a tunnel detonated during activity in central Gaza’s al-Bureij refugee camp.The explosion, which is being investigated by the IDF, occurred close to where officers were leading reporters on a tour of a Hamas rocket manufacturing plant.The Times of Israel’s reporter heard and saw a large blast rip through the air, and captured the moment in the photo below.As the IDF began to escort the reporters out of the Strip, medical dispatches were heard over the radio, with commanders declaring a mass casualty incident.The six fatalities were named as Sgt. The UN will reportedly send an envoy to Israel later this month to investigate the growing mountain of evidence that Hamas terrorists engaged in sexual violence during their October 7 onslaught against southern Israel.According to Hebrew media reports, Pramila Patten, the special representative of the UN secretary-general on sexual violence in conflict, is expected to arrive in Israel at the end of January, the first UN representative being sent to Israel for this purpose.The Haaretz daily reported that Patten was invited to Israel by the Foreign Ministry and will hand over her findings to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for inclusion in his annual report to the UN Security Council.The news comes shortly after two UN experts on torture and executions, Alice Jill Edwards and Morris Tidball-Binz, demanded accountability for sexual violence against Israeli civilians during the October 7 Hamas massacre.The two said that mounting evidence of rapes and genital mutilation point to possible crimes against humanity.On October 7, thousands of Hamas terrorists burst through the border with the Gaza Strip and into Israel in an attack that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The attackers raped women and massacre victims were tortured or mutilated. At least 240 people were abducted and taken as hostages to Gaza.Last month, Patten met the mother of one of the Israeli hostages being held in Gaza, and called for the unconditional and immediate release of all those being held captive.“The toll of this war on innocent civilians, on both sides, is too high and must end. We know that in circumstances of abduction or detention, women especially are at a heightened risk of different forms of violence, including sexual violence,” she said at the time.She added that all reports of sexual violence committed on October 7 by Hamas terrorists must be investigated immediately, and urged the State of Israel to grant access to UN investigative bodies to look into it.At the same time, Patten reiterated Guterres’s call for an immediate ceasefire in the Strip and urgent humanitarian assistance to be sent to civilians in Gaza.Israel has previously criticized the United Nations for not doing enough to address the issue of sexual violence, particularly after UN Women came under intense fire for an October 13 statement that equated Hamas’s terror onslaught with Israel’s military response in the Gaza Strip, while failing to mention the terror group by name or address its sexual crimes.Israeli authorities have also opened their own investigation into sexual crimes committed by Hamas terrorists during the most deadly attack ever on the country. In addition to witness testimony, Israel Police have video evidence, testimony from terrorists and photographs of victims’ bodies that all point toward sexual assault.Most details of the investigations are currently under a gag order.The New York Times recently published a chilling and comprehensive report into the sexual assault against Israeli women at sites across southern Israel on October 7 by Hamas terrorists.The New York Times report, which came out in late December, included interviews with more than 150 witnesses, medical personnel, first responders, soldiers, rape counselors, and government officials, along with video footage, photographs and GPS data from cellphones.Hamas has denied all accusations of sexual abuse despite the overwhelming evidence and testimony.
