That will be a valuable showcase if federal government spending continues to increase. The government of the Pakistan province of Sindh has approved the budget for an installation of biometric cameras to increase the security of toll booths across the province, reports Pakistan Today.The cameras will be equipped with facial recognition and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), and the province has budgeted 1.567 billion rupees (US$5.5 million). Sindh police say that because of its sensitive nature, the contract may be carried out through a government-to-government transaction involving the National Radio Telecom Corporation (NRTC).Officials have been tasked with awarding the contract within a month.Authorities hope the cameras will help reduce crime by identifying vehicles that are stolen or have been involved in hit-and-run incidents. The plan is for the cameras to also be capable of identifying the occupants of vehicles.Images captured by the system will be sent to Sindh’s central police office in real-time, according to the report.There are 40 toll booth plazas that will be hooked up to the central monitoring system, according to Dawn.Pakistan has also turned to biometrics for vehicle registration in an attempt to lower crime around automobile sales.

The physical card will be given to applicants the same day they register.Colombia’s National Registry of Civil Status announced registrations for the digital ID surpassed 500,000 in September.And the National Registry and the Collegiate Union of the Colombian Notary agreed in January to allow civil registrations to be processed digitally and secured by face biometrics. Digital rights group Access Now urged biometric surveillance companies operating in Latin America for more transparency after presenting a new report detailing how many companies sent information on their human rights practices when queried.The group sent a list of questions to 23 technology companies querying them on sales of surveillance products to governments, data collection practices and practices that ensure products are not used in human rights abuses in Latin American countries. Getting straight answers was “unsurprisingly difficult,” says the report. Only nine out of the 23 companies contacted chose to send information on their practices.Among the companies that sent replies to Access Now are Idemia, Cellebrite, NEC, Dahua and IBM. Companies that declined to send answers include Huawei, Hikvision, Johnson Controls, Oosto and more.Many of the replies lacked detail and clarity while some responses may indicate that companies are not in compliance with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), according to the report.If they engage, their answers are mostly short, general, focused on the procurement angle, or coming straight from the public relations playbook,” Access Now’s Ángela Alarcón says in a press release. “Civil society needs accountability from these companies, and people across Latin America have the right to security and privacy.”The Access Now report was published with the Asociación por los Derechos Civiles (ADC), Laboratory of Public Policy and Internet (LAPIN) and LaLibre.net.

Archaeologists have identified three sites that appear to have been temporary Roman military camps, stretched across a swath of territory in northern Arabia, that indicate a previously unknown campaign.The discovery was made using remote image sensing, including photographs from Google Earth.The research from the University of Oxford School of Archaeology, published in the journal Antiquity, said it was not currently possible to date the camps, which lie east of Bayir in Jordan, but speculated they were part of the 106 CE Roman annexation of the Nabatean kingdom, centered on the desert city Petra.Michael Fradley, who led the research, told the BBC, “We are almost certain they were built by the Roman army.”Though the study did not mention Masada, a mountainous site in southern Israel that the Romans were said to have besieged, there are remains of a Roman camp from around the same period located at the base of the mountain.Researchers analyzed satellite imagery of southern Jordan from the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) project, which uses images from Google Earth. As the European Union edges towards its spring deadline for finalizing the Artificial Intelligence Act and the U.S. Congress examines potential risks stemming from AI, debates on AI risks are heating up on both sides of the Atlantic.While some highlight incompatible regulations between the two trade partners, others are debating the impact of AI on civil rights. The past week has seen warnings from civil society groups hoping to impact European AI legislation, including the use and exports of biometric identification.Joining them from across the Atlantic were a number of U.S. federal agencies which issued a reminder that they have the authority to tackle harms caused by AI bias and they plan to use it.-Brookings warns about EU-US regulatory misalignment on AI risks-Last year in December, Brussels and Washington agreed to set up a roadmap for defining common technical standards, terminology and evaluation of AI as part of the EU-U.S. Trade and Technology Council (TTC). Ultimately, companies on both sides of the Atlantic should be able to comply with both regulatory regimes using a single set of tools.But the duo are still a way apart on how to regulate risks of AI technology, Brookings warned in a report issued this week.“Regarding many specific AI applications, especially those related to socioeconomic processes and online platforms, the EU and U.S. are on a path to significant misalignment,” the report says.The report details differences between EU and U.S. approaches to AI risk management and lays out policy recommendations. While the EU places faith in AI legislation, the U.S. relies more on federal agencies and non-regulatory infrastructure, such as the new AI risk management framework. And while both strategies are aligned on concepts of risks, trustworthy AI and endorsement of international standards, the specifics of these AI risk management regimes have more differences than similarities, the report said.Brookings recommends a number of measures, including deepening knowledge sharing on a number of levels and joint work on recommender systems, network algorithms and online platforms. The U.S. should execute federal agency AI regulatory plans while the EU should create more flexibility in the sectoral implementation of the EU AI Act, the report said.NGOs reiterate call for bans on remote biometric identification-Groups gathered under human rights organization ARTICLE 19, including European Digital Rights, Access Now, Algorithm Watch, Amnesty International and others, invited Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to prohibit AI systems that pose an unacceptable risk for fundamental rights.The group proposed a full ban on all types of remote biometric identification, predictive and policing systems in law enforcement, emotion recognition systems, biometric categorization systems using sensitive attributes or being used in public spaces as well as other AI applications.Article 19 also invited MEPs to prioritize human rights while working on the EU AI Act. The Civil Rights Division noted that it aims to hold companies accountable when they use artificial intelligence in ways that prove discriminatory while CFPB is already looking into housing discrimination resulting from bias in lending or home-valuation algorithms. Finally, the EEOC noted the use of AI for hiring and recruitment.The four U.S. agencies are not the only ones looking into AI risks. The city government said Ukraine’s air force intercepted 11 cruise missiles and two unmanned aerial vehicles over Kyiv.The strikes on the nine-story residential building in central Ukraine occurred in Uman, a city located around 215 kilometers (134 miles) south of Kyiv that houses Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s gravesite, a popular pilgrimage site for Hasidic Jews. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas man went next door with a rifle and began shooting his neighbors, killing an 8-year-old and four others inside the house, after the family asked him to stop firing rounds in his yard because they were trying to sleep, authorities said Saturday.San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said authorities were still searching for the 39-year-old suspect following the overnight shooting in the town of Cleveland, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Houston. He said the suspect, whom he did not identify, used an AR-style rifle in the shooting.Capers said there were 10 people in the house and that no one else was injured. He said two of the victims, all believed to be from Honduras, were found laying over two children inside.“The Honduran ladies that were laying over these children were doing it in such an effort as to protect the child,” Capers said.The confrontation followed family members walking up to the fence and asking the suspect to stop shooting rounds, Capers said. The suspect responded by telling them that it was his property, according to Capers, and that one person in the house got a video of the suspect walking up to the front door with the rifle.Three of the victims were women and one was a man. Their names were not released. (AP) — A tornado touched down in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on Saturday as a powerful storm system brought intense rain and powerful winds to the state, overturning cars, damaging homes and snapping tree branches.The National Weather Service in Miami said the tornado hit late Saturday afternoon with winds of 100 mph (160 kph) near Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and headed northeast toward the coast.Storm damage forced authorities in the coastal city to close major roadways in the city as workers cleared debris and inspected wreckage. PHOENIX (AP) — Paramedics summoned to an Arizona retirement community last summer found an 80-year-old woman slumped inside her mobile home, enveloped in the suffocating 99-degree (37 C) heat she suffered for days after her air conditioner broke down. Efforts to revive her failed, and her death was ruled environmental heat exposure aggravated by heart disease and diabetes.In America’s hottest big metro, older people like the Sun Lakes mobile home resident accounted for most of the 77 people who died last summer in broiling heat inside their homes, almost all without air conditioning. Now, the heat dangers long known in greater Phoenix are becoming familiar nationwide as global warming creates new challenges to protect the aged.From the Pacific Northwest to Chicago to North Carolina, health clinics, utilities and local governments are being tested to keep older people safe when temperatures soar. They’re adopting rules for disconnecting electricity, mandating when to switch on communal air conditioning and improving communication with at-risk people living alone.Situated in the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix and its suburbs are ground zero for heat-associated deaths in the U.S. Such fatalities are so common that Arizona’s largest county keeps a weekly online tally during the six-month hot season from May through October. Chan School of Public Health.“If you are elderly and sick you are unlikely to get into an Uber or bus to get to a cooling center,” said Bernstein, who vividly recalls a 1995 heat wave that killed 739 mostly older people in Chicago, his hometown. “So many were socially isolated and at tremendous risk.”Sociologist Eric M. (AP) — With her insurance about to run out and Republicans in her home state of Missouri ramping up rhetoric against gender-affirming health care, Erin Stille nervously visited a foreign pharmaceutical site as a “last resort” to ensure she could continue getting the hormones she needs.Stille, 26, sent a $300 bank transfer to a Taiwan-based supplier for a 6-month supply of estrogen patches and androgen-blocking pills. For three weeks she feared she'd been scammed but breathed a sigh of relief when a large package arrived at her home in St. Peters.“It's definitely a little scary,” Stille said. “Taking a chance like this, I could have my money stolen and there's not much I can do about it. But I figured, at this point, that the benefits outweigh the risks.”Stille, and others nationwide, are scrambling to form contingency plans as Republican politicians rapidly erode access to the gender-affirming treatments many credit as life-saving.Fears became even more pronounced in Missouri this month after Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey issued a first-of-its-kind emergency rule that places strict restrictions on that care for minors — and adults.While some doctors say self-medicating trans health care is dangerous, Stille is among a growing population who say they see no other option.If enacted, the Missouri rule will require people to have experienced an “intense pattern” of documented gender dysphoria for three years and to have received at least 15 hourly sessions with a therapist over 18 months or more before receiving puberty blockers, hormones, surgery or other treatment.Patients also must first be screened for autism and “social media addiction,” and any psychiatric symptoms from mental health issues will have to be treated and resolved. Some trans people in GOP-controlled states that have not yet enacted bans are buying from these suppliers to build an emergency stockpile.But self-administering hormones without adequate supervision can be “extraordinarily dangerous,” especially for those taking testosterone, said Dr. Robert Lash, chief medical officer at the Endocrine Society, which represents specialists who treat hormone conditions.Although taking testosterone can help trans men develop some desired physical features, it also increases their risk of a blood clot or stroke. Estrogen use can also increase risk of blood clots, he said.“These are powerful medications with a lot of effects on a lot of body systems, not all of which are good,” Lash said. “Taking these hormones on your own is just an invitation to running into problems. 27 And he ( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant (PEACE TREATY) with many for one week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE ANIMAL SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

JTA — Among the many honors accruing to King Charles III in advance of his coronation next week: a new version of a traditional prayer performed by a British-Jewish children’s choir.United Synagogue, the union of British Orthodox synagogues, commissioned a new recording of “Adon Olam,” a prayer perhaps most recognizable as the conclusion of Shabbat services, and dedicated it to the new king.The rendition was composed by a British-Jewish musician who teaches at a Jewish school and was arranged by the brothers in the indie rock duo Portnoy, according to the Jewish Chronicle, a British Jewish newspaper.The choir includes children from five Jewish schools who are accompanied by musicians from Ukraine.Everyone involved is wearing a shirt for the coronation, planned for May 6, in a “We are the World“-style video released Friday.The recording is part of a passel of celebrations that British communities are undertaking as they prepare to crown a new monarch for the first time in more than 70 years. Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in September after taking the throne in 1952.“King Charles III has always been a stalwart personal friend to the Jewish community,” said Anthony Broza, chief executive of a music distributor company called Wienerworld that participated in the project.“We hope that this new recording of Adon Olam will act as further recognition of the community’s affection for the Royal Family and our gratitude that Jews can observe their customs and traditions safely and openly in the UK,” he said.England’s chief rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, is reportedly sleeping at the king’s residence the night before the coronation so that he can attend without violating Shabbat.The coronation will take place at Westminster Abbey, a royal church; while many Orthodox interpretations of Jewish law hold that Jews should not enter churches, London’s top rabbinical court ruled in the 1970s that chief rabbis may do so if their presence is requested by the monarch.
