Most
long COVID symptoms are gone in a year for mild cases — Israeli
study-Researcher says ‘small number of people’ still suffer from
shortness of breath or weakness 12 months after infection, but ‘vast
majority’ are OK-By AFP-jan 12,23-Today, 6:11 am
PARIS — Most
symptoms from long COVID clear up within a year for people who had mild
initial infections, a large Israel study said Thursday, with the
findings welcomed as “reassuring.”At least 17 million people in Europe
suffered from long COVID symptoms months after recovering from their
initial infection during 2020 and 2021, according to modeling from the
World Health Organization. However, much about the condition has remained
unclear, including how long it lasts.Researchers in Israel analyzed the
medical records of nearly two million people of all ages who were
tested for COVID in the country between March 2020 and October 2021.The
results therefore covered the earlier COVID variants including Delta,
but not the more recently discovered Omicron variants. The researchers
combed through the records, which were provided by Maccabi Healthcare
Services, for more than 70 different symptoms that have been linked to
long COVID.They excluded patients who had more serious illness,
including those who were hospitalized, which previous research has
suggested have a higher risk of long COVID.For the mild cases, the study
found a significantly increased risk of several conditions, including
loss of smell and taste, breathing problems, weakness, palpitations,
strep throat, dizziness, and concentration and memory impairment
commonly called “brain fog.”However, most symptoms cleared up within 12
months.“There is a small number of people still suffering from shortness
of breath or weakness for a year after COVID,” said Maytal
Bivas-Benita, a researcher at Israel’s KI Research Institute and study
co-author.The study, published in the journal BMJ, also found that
vaccinated patients had a lower risk of breathing problems — the most
common symptom — compared to unvaccinated cases.Children, meanwhile, had
fewer health problems than adults, and recovered from most of them well
within a year.Bivas-Benita told AFP that she was “encouraged” by the
findings, particularly after fears about how long the symptoms could
linger.“The vast majority of patients will be OK after a year,” she
said.Lead study author Barak Mizrahi said he hoped the research would
help lower uncertainty for doctors trying to figure out if their
patients’ symptoms are related to COVID.Michael Absoud, a pediatrician
and clinical academic at King’s College London not involved in the
study, called the findings “reassuring.”It confirms that the vast
majority of children with long COVID symptoms have “a very good
recovery,” he said.
Trump Calls on Congress to Investigate How the ‘Deep State’ Censored Americans-by Sputnik-January 12th 2023, 4:09 am
"Congressional
leaders should promptly issue subpoenas in furtherance of this
goal."Former US President Donald Trump is calling on leaders in Congress
to look into the ways the FBI and other government agencies colluded
with Big Tech companies to stifle Americans’ free speech.“The new
Congress should immediately hold hearings to investigate the role of the
FBI and other federal agencies in censoring lawful speech,” Trump said
in a video message published Wednesday.“Congressional leaders should
promptly issue subpoenas in furtherance of this goal.”In addition, Trump
called for “a 7-year cooling off period before any employee of these
powerful agencies is allowed to take a job at a major platform.”The
message came just a day after the House of Representatives voted along
party lines to create the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of
the Federal Government, an effort that has drawn comparisons to the
famed Church Committee that investigated the CIA in the 1970s.The panel
will probe the extent to which US government agencies worked to
“collect, compile, analyze, use, or disseminate information about
citizens of the United States, including any unconstitutional, illegal,
or unethical activities committed against citizens of the United
States.”Trump’s call to action made frequent reference to the Twitter
Files, an ongoing series of reports into collusion between the social
media giant and the US government.Documents published in the course of
the mammoth investigation have shown the FBI paid Twitter millions of
dollars to suspend the accounts of users it accused of violating the
platform’s policies.“As recent reporting shows, the FBI and other rogue
agencies have been systematically colluding with former national
security officials placed in high positions – at Twitter and, very
likely, other companies – to advance their censorship regime” and “steal
an election,” Trump noted in his address.“The now-famous ‘Twitter
Files’ have proven beyond all doubt that the corrupt officials at the
FBI have been coordinating a massive censorship, surveillance, and
propaganda campaign against the American People and, frankly, against
me,” the former president said.“The Twitter Files prove that we urgently
need my plan to dismantle the illegal censorship regime – a regime like
nobody’s ever seen in the history of our country, or most other
countries for that matter,” he continued.“The revelations also highlight
why my proposal to end the revolving door between the deep state… and
the tech tyrants, is so important.”“And there is a deep state, indeed,”
Trump noted. “I wasn’t a believer but everybody’s a believer right
now.”“In the most recent and notorious example, the FBI worked to stop
the truth from being told about the Biden family’s criminality.”“They
didn’t want any bad information to come out about the Biden family,”
Trump continued. “The fix was in. The election was rigged. But the
censorship of the ‘Laptop from Hell’ is only the beginning of the story
about the weaponization of government against free speech.”On Wednesday,
James Comer (R-KY), the new chairman of the powerful Oversight
committee, formally requested that the US Treasury Department provide
the body with information on the Biden family’s business dealings.
Sen. Graham Demands Special Counsel Probe As Biden Breaks Silence Over Classified Docs-by Zero Hedge-January 12th 2023, 4:53 am
"Every
conservative out there is completely disgusted."Sen. Lindsey Graham
(R-S.C.), a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on
Wednesday called for Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a
special counsel to investigate the handling of classified documents by
President Biden while he served as vice president.Graham said the
appointment of a special counsel is necessary to investigate Biden after
Garland announced the appointment of career prosecutor Jack Smith to
investigate former President Trump’s possession of classified documents
at Mar-a-Lago.“I think if you believe a special counsel is necessary to
assure the public about the handling of classified documents by Donald
Trump, you should apply a special counsel to the mishandling of
classified documents by President Biden when he was vice
president,” Graham said during an interview with Martha MacCallum on Fox
News. “If there is not a special counsel appointed to find out how this
happened with President Biden regarding classified information … it
will hurt the country,” Graham warned.Graham warned that many
conservatives believe prosecutors and the media are applying a different
set of standards for Trump and Biden.“Every conservative out there is
completely disgusted with the standard that exists in America when it
comes to conservatives and everybody else,” he said.“Garland, if you’re
listening, if you thought it was necessary to appoint a special counsel
regarding President Trump, then you need to do the exact same thing
regarding President Biden when it comes to handling classified
information,” Graham said.Additionally, President Biden has broken his
silence on the issue. At a news conference Wednesday for the North
American Leaders’ Summit in Mexico, President Biden said he doesn’t know
why classified papers were lying around in his former office at the
Penn Biden Center (this was before the second batch of classified papers
were discovered). “People know I take classified documents and
classified information seriously,” he said. “When my lawyers were
clearing out my office at the University of Pennsylvania, they set up an
office for me — a secure office in the Capitol, when I — the four years
after being vice president, I was a professor at Penn. “They found some
documents in a box — you know, a locked cabinet, or at least a
closet. And as soon as they did, they realized there were several
classified documents in that box. And they did what they should have
done: They immediately called the Archives — immediately called the
Archives — turned them over to the Archives.” “And I was briefed about
this discovery and surprised to learn that there were any government
records that were taken there to that office. “But I don’t know what’s
in the documents. I’ve — my lawyers have not suggested I ask what
documents they were. I’ve turned over the boxes — they’ve turned over
the boxes to the Archives. And we’re cooperating fully — cooperating
fully with the review and — which I hope will be finished soon, and will
be more detail at that time.”As a reminder, when informed about the FBI
raid of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence to retrieve classified
documents, Biden asked “how could anyone be that irresponsible?”
Swiss Army Sends 5000+ Soldiers to Guard Davos Globalist Elites-by Breitbart-January 12th 2023, 5:19 am
Some
5,000-plus soldiers from the Swiss army are deployed. When the globalist
elites fly into Davos, Switzerland, in coming days to prepare for the
World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, they will be far from alone
as they step off their private jet transports and into the fleet of
waiting limousines. Some 5,000-plus soldiers from the Swiss army are
deployed to welcome attendees to the luxury ski resort and protect
participants from any harassment, protests or dissenting voices. In a
statement released Friday, January 6th, the Swiss Defense Department
(VBS) said the Federal Assembly, the country’s parliament, had approved
the deployment of the mass Swiss army contingent, the Swiss
German-language newspaper Blick reports.Anti-WEF protests
are reportedly expected to take place all next week after the conference
opening on Monday. Two requests for permission to demonstrate against
the summit have been submitted to the town of Davos, one of the town’s
administrative officials told the Swiss press. As Breitbart News
reported, this year’s meeting is headlined “Cooperation in a Fragmented
World” and will follow on from the Great Reset as declared at the
Davos summit of 2021.
Spectacular Byzantine church mosaics
uncovered near Jericho-Building appears to have been large house of
prayer that survived iconoclasm during early Islamic period and later
earthquake; to be relocated for preservation, display-By TOI staff-jan
12,23-Today, 5:27 pm
A Byzantine church with elaborate mosaic
floors was uncovered in the area of Jericho, in the West Bank, the Civil
Administration said in a statement Wednesday. The Civil Administration,
the government body that oversees activity in the West Bank, did not say
when the church was first discovered by its archaeology unit, which has
been working at the site.It dated the church to the 6th century CE, and
noted it was still being used during the Early Muslim Period a hundred
years later. Though Islam bans the display of icons and images in public
places, the mosaic floors showed no indications of damage from
destructive iconoclasm. The church covers 250 square meters, big enough
to have served as one of the larger Christian houses of worship in the
area at the time. Its nave was almost completely preserved and is
covered with a mosaic depicting vine braids and animal
figures.Construction included materials not found locally, such as
marble columns and black bitumen stone that would have required great
effort to transport from other areas, an indication of the church
builders’ wealth, the statement said.A three-meter-long inscription,
containing five lines in Greek and found in the prayer area,
commemorates Georgios and Nonus, apparently two public figures who
donated to the construction of the church.“The Civil Administration sees
great importance in the discovery of antiquities,” and will continue
archaeological excavations “for the continued discovery of the area’s
glorious past,” the statement said. The building survived a major
earthquake in 749 CE that destroyed other churches and constructions
throughout the region, though it was abandoned before the landmark event
and its entrance deliberately sealed. The Civil Administration said it
intends to move the building and put it on display in the mosaic museum
at the Good Samaritan site, close to the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale
Adumim.
Criminal de-Nile-Egypt foils theft of 10-ton ancient
Ramses II statue-Three men arrested for trying to steal pharaonic
artifact and excavate antiquities at Aswan-By AFP and TOI staff-jan

CAIRO, Egypt — Egyptian authorities said
Tuesday they had detained three people for trying to steal a
millennia-old 10-ton statue of the pharaoh Ramses II with a crane. The
public prosecutor’s office said in a statement it had “ordered three
defendants be held in custody for four days pending investigations,”
accusing them “of attempting to steal a pharaonic statue” from the
ancient southern city of Aswan, some 675 kilometers (420 miles) south of
Cairo on the Nile. The statement said police had reported that “three
people were arrested in possession of manual digging tools and heavy
equipment, a crane,” which they had used in a bid to “lift the statue
and excavate antiquities in the area.”The Antiquities Authority in Aswan
has proven the “antiquity [of the statue] and attributed it to Ramses
II, with a weight of approximately 10 tons,” the statement addedThe
prosecutor’s office ordered officers to “quickly investigate others who
were involved with the suspects in the crime.”Ramses II (c. 1303–1213
BC), one of the most famous pharaohs of the 19th dynasty, ruled for 67
years. He was known as a great warrior and prolific builder who ordered
the construction of temples across Egypt. Egitto, tentano di rubare con

January 11, 2023-Ramses II is commonly associated with the figure who
was in power during the biblical Book of Exodus, which tells the story
of the Israelites leaving Egypt after years of slavery, under the
leadership of Moses. The rule of Ramses II marked the last peak of
Egypt’s imperial power. In December last year, researchers in England and
Egypt used computer imagery and scanning techniques to reconstruct the
face of Ramses II.Over the past decade, Egypt has recovered about 29,000
antiquities found to have been taken abroad through illegitimate means.
Still
standing: Researchers crack secret of ancient Rome’s self-healing
concrete-Scientists have long wondered what made the material so
durable, but a new MIT study utilizing microarchaeology and infrared
cameras gives insight into Herod’s enduring monuments-By Melanie
Lidman-jan 12,23-Today, 9:17 pm
The Start-up Nation’s crumbling
concrete buildings show modern Israel has a thing or two to learn from
2,000-year-old Roman tech. Through earthquakes, severe weather, and even
after being submerged underwater, ancient Roman concrete structures
have survived millennia without the spiderwebs of cracks that plague
Israel’s brutalist architecture after just a few decades. That’s because
Roman concrete has the unique ability to “heal” its own cracks after
being exposed to water, according to a group of Italian and American
scientists who were able to shed more light on the chemical reaction
that helps concrete make cracks disappear.
Using new information
gathered by infrared cameras and other microarchaeology methods on
samples taken from ancient concrete in central Italy, the group was able
to recreate their own “Roman concrete” and witnessed their samples make
inflicted cracks disappear in a matter of weeks. Some of the Roman
construction in Israel, including the Caesarea port, parts of Herod’s
palace in Jericho, and Herod’s family tomb in Jerusalem, contain
concrete similar to the Italian concrete studied. Concrete in these
sites used imported Italian ash, called pozzolana, which was extracted
from an area near Naples and brought to Israel by ship.In addition to
solving the riddle of these enduring Roman monuments, the research could
help the modern concrete industry, one of the most polluting industries
in the world, learn how to create more durable concrete that requires
fewer materials and less maintenance.“Romans were very savvy in how to
formulate concrete for different applications,” Dr. Linda Seymour, the
lead author of the study published Friday in the prestigious journal
Science Advances, told The Times of Israel this week. The Romans came
across these concrete varieties after much trial and error, Seymour
explained.“As early as Phoenician times [1500 to 300 BCE], they saw that
when they added crushed pottery, [the concrete] was able to set in
different conditions, like with more water, or even underwater,” Seymour
said. “There was kind of this evolution of them trying out different
aggregates, and they saw when they used volcanic aggregate [based on
volcanic ash] they could build even larger structures.”Seymour, who is
currently an independent consultant in the concrete industry, studied
ancient Roman concrete at MIT during her PhD research, delving into how
Romans were experts at creating concrete that was uniquely adapted to
each specific location and purpose. Some concrete set quickly, which
allowed the Romans to build large and impressive structures such as the
giant dome of the Pantheon. Others set slowly, ideal for creating smooth
water channels on aqueducts, such as the one found near Caesarea. But
one of the most impressive aspects across many types of Roman concrete —
and one that has stumped scientists until recently — is that the
concrete continues to react with water after it has set, allowing it to
heal cracks that develop over time.Seymour and her team were able to
recreate a type of concrete similar to one they found at Roman ruins
they studied at Privernum, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of
the Italian capital. The researchers created cylinders of their own Roman
concrete, then inflicted tiny cracks half a millimeter wide in the
samples. When the cylinders were immersed in running water for one to
three weeks, the cracks shrunk and sealed. After a year, the cracks were
completely gone.Concrete with designer Italian ash.Modern concrete
consists of gravel, sand and water, held together by the binding element
of cement. Most modern concrete uses Portland cement, invented in the
1800s in England, which is a combination of materials such as calcium,
silicon, aluminum, iron, limestone, shells, and chalk, heated at
exceptionally high temperatures and then ground into a fine
powder.Modern cement requires the materials to be heated to a
temperature of more than 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,700 degrees
Fahrenheit), leading to enormous greenhouse gas emissions. Each ton of
concrete produced creates a metric ton of carbon dioxide emissions. If
the cement industry were a country, it would have the third-highest
emissions in the world, after only the United States and China.Modern
concrete is also notoriously fragile and will crack and crumble after
just a few decades, especially when wet or near salt water, as evidenced
by the crumbling brutalist concrete architecture popular in many
Israeli cities.Roman concrete, especially in marine environments such as
the Caesarea port, has long captured the fascination of researchers for
its durability. The Romans themselves were exceptionally proud of their
concrete and left extensive written records about their concrete
mixing. Pliny the Elder’s first century CE opus “Naturalis Historia,”
described a process whereby volcanic ash mixed with water formed an
“impenetrable stone.”University of Utah geologist Prof. Marie Jackson
led a team in 2017 that used Pliny the Elder’s description to guide
their groundbreaking research about Roman cement that was used
underwater. Their research found that seawater creates a reaction with
the concrete — specifically the volcanic ash contained in it — to seal
cracks. The construction of Caesarea’s breakwaters was an ingenious use
of dense “hydraulic concrete,” a mixture of mortar, Italian pozzolana,
sandstone and slaked lime. There are approximately 35,000 cubic meters
(1.2 million cubic feet) of concrete in the Caesarea port, and 24,000
cubic meters (850,000 cubic feet) of this concrete are made up of the
pozzolana ash, said Prof. Boaz Zissu, an expert in the Roman,
Hellenistic and Byzantine periods at the Martin (Szusz) Department of
Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology at Bar Ilan University. This
represented at least 52,000 tons of imported volcanic ash, the
equivalent of 100 to 150 large boatloads, archaeologists determined in
an earlier study focusing on the port’s construction.“There were boats
bringing wheat from Alexandria to Italy, because the Italians were
hungry for Egyptian wheat, and we believe that on the way back to Egypt,
the ships were likely bringing the pozzolana,” Zissu said.Caesarea is
an amazing story. It was the idea of a stubborn king with an agenda that
goes against the laws of nature-Because the pozzolana was such a luxury
item, it was only used for the most important projects, ones that were
near and dear to Herod’s heart — like his family tomb — or that required
extraordinary engineering feats, like Caesarea.“Caesarea is an amazing
story,” Zissu said, because the geographic location is not necessarily
suited to a port, as there is no protection from the open sea. “It was
the idea of a stubborn king with an agenda that goes against the laws of
nature.”According to Zissu, the quality of work at the Caesarea port is
not as refined as other Roman construction. But that could be because
the local workers, unfamiliar with the imported materials, were trying
to pour concrete into blocks while bobbing in a boat in the middle of
the open sea, he said.“They were required to build a port in difficult
conditions, where it’s totally not suitable,” Zissu said. “So part of
the support for this project [from Rome] came in the form of this
pozzolana.”Only the concrete made with the pozzolana ash has the
self-healing qualities that Seymour’s team observed in their
experiments.Other Roman ruins in Israel such as Apollonia, Beit Shean,
and Masada utilized similar building methods to Roman construction in
Italy, but used local labor and local materials. When making concrete,
workers used things like crushed pottery or cement as the binding
agent. Why does this concrete have white specks? Seymour and her team
started questioning why the concrete they found had lime clasts, or
white granules rich in calcium, that are visible to the naked eye,
especially because it looked like these lime clasts had reacted in
strange ways within the concrete. There is lots of historical writing
about what went into [Roman concrete], but it is hard to recreate in the
lab-“One of the elusive features of Roman concrete is understanding the
exact order of operations, how it was produced, and how it was produced
at scale,” said Seymour. “There is lots of historical writing about
what went into it, but it is hard to recreate in the lab.”“One of the
things we noticed from previous studies, particularly in Roman marine
concrete, is that these lime clasts were pretty prevalent and looked
like they had partially reacted or fully reacted over time to become
different,” said Seymour. They were deep into the research when Seymour
took part in an exchange between MIT and Israeli scientists through
MISTI, the MIT International Science and Technology Initiative, in 2018.
Seymour visited an archaeological dig outside of Rehovot managed by the
Weizmann Institute’s Prof. Stephen Weiner, the founder and director of
the Kimmel Center for Archaeological Science.Seymour was struck by the
way Israeli researchers on-site were using Fourier Transform InfraRed
(FTIR) spectroscopy, an advanced camera that determines how infrared
rays are absorbed in the material and can provide a unique “thumbprint”
of that material’s chemical composition. It’s a popular process in
microarchaeology, but Seymour’s team at MIT hadn’t yet utilized it for
their Roman concrete. After this “aha” moment, when she returned to the
lab in Boston, they sent a few samples through a neighboring lab’s FTIR
machine and were able to further characterize the calcium carbonate in
the concrete. This helped them understand more about its chemical
composition. The team surmised that the Romans were likely using “hot
mixing” for this type of concrete, which occurs when sand, volcanic ash
and burned limestone are mixed. When water is added, a chemical reaction
occurs that heats the mixture up to 200 degrees Celcius (392
Fahrenheit). This process also leaves tiny but visible white granules
rich in calcium. As time goes on, if the concrete cracks and water enters
it, the water dissolves these bits of calcium and they recrystallize
along the fissure, sealing it over time. This reaction between the water
and the bits of calcium is what gives the concrete a self-healing
property-Archaeology the eye can’t see
Weizmann’s Weiner is one of
the pioneers in the field of microarchaeology — and one of the first
scientists to bring advanced microscopes and lab equipment to the site
of the dig for real-time analysis.Weiner first started bringing infrared
spectroscopy machines to the field in the 1990s, encouraged by the
possibilities of understanding the chemical makeup of different
materials and the stories these materials can tell about daily life.
Having the lab equipment on site is important because the material that
can provide the most information on a microscopic level, such as bits of
mortar or ash, often gets cleared out during the excavations, Weiner
said. When the lab equipment is on hand, they can determine within a few
minutes if a certain material is useful and excavation should proceed
in a different manner.Weiner’s lab runs a field school each summer for
PhD and master’s students from around the world, which was how Seymour
first saw the onsite testing in 2018.Mortar was a huge revolution and
one of the first materials synthetically produced by humans. Once they
did that, they could do all sorts of things-Weiner is also fascinated by
the stories found in the material that holds the stones together.
“Mortar was a huge revolution and one of the first materials
synthetically produced by humans,” he said. “Once they did that, they
could do all sorts of things.”All roads to Rome are paved with Portland
cement… for now-Seymour is now trying to apply her ancient Roman
knowledge to modern concrete in hopes that the cement industry can
replicate some of the self-healing mechanisms the Romans perfected two
millennia ago.“One of the things we are looking at is understanding the
durability mechanisms in Roman concrete in order to make better
materials for the future,” she said. “This is about sustainability
because more durable structures require less work and less materials to
maintain.”MIT’s Prof. Admir Masic, Seymour’s advisor and a co-author of
the paper, has a patent exploring how modern concrete can maintain its
structural integrity while incorporating self-healing properties. Masic
is also the co-founder of a company, DMAT, which is trying to implement
these practices.Seymour is now a consultant in the private sector of the
concrete industry. She focuses on supplementary cementitious materials
or materials that can be added to concrete to replace some of the
Portland cement. Her goal is to make concrete more environmentally
friendly, based on Roman practices.“It’s important to note this study is
one small piece of the puzzle of how Roman concrete remains durable,”
Seymour added. “There were so many different formulations the Romans
used based on location and application, we may never know every single
process going on with this material. We have so much to learn about how
these processes work.”Seymour spoke to The Times of Israel on the first
day of a personal trip to Israel, and the day before her first visit to
Caesarea, the ancient port city built by Herod the Great in around 25-13
BCE.“Aqueducts are my favorite type of Roman construction,” she said.
“But I’ve only seen aqueducts in Rome and Naples, so this is really an
opportunity to see how material was being made and used in a totally
different context.”That’s one of the things that fascinates Seymour
about Roman concrete: In each place it’s used, the composition is a
little bit different, uniquely adapted to the specific function and
location while still maintaining the same properties that allowed it to
endure for millennia.“I could study this for the rest of my life, and
I’d still be coming across new types,” she said. “I’m still in awe of
how they were able to manipulate the material, and what control they had
over the material.”
Israeli researchers able to build enzymes
‘like Lego,’ in potential boon for drugs-Bold new technique at Weizmann
Institute generates new enzymes with unprecedented scale, in possible
boost to both chemical industry and development of medical treatments-By
Nathan Jeffay-jan 12,23-Today, 9:08 pm
Israeli scientists say
they have developed a new method to construct enzymes “that’s like
building Lego,” in the hope that they could eventually be used to
engineer new drugs. The discovery allows new enzymes to be created on
such a rapid scale that the Weizmann Institute of Science team behind
the research created a million enzymes in a single test tube — some
3,000 of which showed potential for development.Enzymes are proteins
that speed up chemical processes, like a fast-forward button on movies.
Therefore the researchers behind the breakthrough say their work could
“transform the chemical industry,” as well as advance medical
developments.By progressing the field of enzyme-building, the
researchers hope to make it easier to safely break down pollutants,
sewage and agricultural waste, and then turn them into biofuel or animal
feed. The study group, led by Prof. Sarel Fleishman of the Weizmann’s
Biomolecular Sciences Department, published its findings on Thursday in
the peer-reviewed journal “Science.”Scientists have long been creating
new enzymes, but Fleishman’s technique does so on unprecedented scale.
“The standard approach in this field is to create hundreds of candidates
to perform the function that is needed, screen them, and pick a
‘winner,’” Fleishman told The Times of Israel.“What we have done is to
break down enzymes into fragments, with each fragment being a portion of
a single protein. Then we can design new enzymes on computers in a
modular way — by putting together fragments like building with Lego.”An
artificial intelligence technique developed in Fleishman’s lab is
“learning” what function different combinations of fragments fulfill and
determining which fragments should be pieced together to generate an
enzyme that serves a particular purpose.Scaling up the invention of new
enzymes could provide a shortcut to inventing new drugs, Fleishman said.
“In order to produce specific molecules for drugs, enzymes take source
molecules and transform them chemically in to the substance that is
desired for medical use,” he explained.“The idea here is that you could
optimize specific enzymes to get exactly the reactions you want, and
widen the range of drugs we can make,” he added.“Also, for existing
drugs that are currently created not by enzymes but by polluting and
inefficient processes, new enzymes could provide a significantly more
environmentally friendly approach.”The research got underway when
Rosalie Lipsh-Sokolik, a PhD student in Fleishman’s lab, started
experimenting with a family of several dozen enzymes that break down
xylan, a common component of plant cell walls.“If we manage to boost the
activity of these enzymes, they might be used for breaking down plant
compounds such as xylan and cellulose into sugars, which in turn can
help generate biofuels,” Lipsh-Sokolik said. “Instead of disposing of
agricultural waste, for example, we should be able to turn it into an
energy source.”Fleishman stated that the new Weizmann method, which he
is calling CADENZ – short for Combinatorial Assembly and Design of
Enzymes – produced more enzymes than could prove useful in one
experiment than standard methods could produce in a decade.“The first
time we looked at the experimental results, we were amazed,” he said.
“The sheer number of different active enzymes we got was staggering.”

ostrich eggs over 4,000 years old found near excavated firepit in
south-Israel Antiquities Authority says campsite discovery can shed
light on lives of nomadic desert population; experts believe eggs were
used for food as well as decoration-By TOI staff-jan 12,23-Today, 2:31

Eight ostrich eggs dated between 4,000 and 7,500 years ago
have been discovered during excavations in the south of Israel, next to a
firepit. The eggs were found during an Israel Antiquities Authority
archaeological dig in the agricultural fields of Moshav Be’er Milka, the
organization announced Thursday.“This is a very important find that —
with the help of modern scientific methods — can teach us a lot about
the nomadic people of the desert in ancient times,” said Lauren Davis,
the IAA’s excavation director.Davis said the team found a campsite
spread over 200 square meters that was used by desert nomads since
prehistoric times. In addition to the ostrich eggs, the excavations
uncovered burnt stones, flint and stone tools, and pottery
shards.“Although the nomads did not build permanent structures at this
site, the finds allow us to feel their presence in the desert. These
campsites were quickly covered over by the dunes and were re-exposed
with the sand movement over hundreds and thousands of years,” Davis
said. “This fact explains the exceptional preservation of the eggs,
allowing us a glimpse into the lives of the nomads who roamed the desert
in ancient times.”Davis said that because the eggs were found in close
proximity to the firepit, it appeared they had been deliberately
collected.“One of the eggs was found directly in the fire pit,
strengthening the understanding that they were used as food here. The
ostrich eggs were crushed but well-preserved, despite the fact that they
were uncovered in the surface layer,” Davis said.According to the IAA,
ostrich eggs have been found at archaeological sites dating from a
number of periods, demonstrating that they held value as a material.“We
find ostrich eggs in archaeological sites in funerary contexts, and as
luxury items and water-canteens. Naturally, they were used as a source
of food: one ostrich egg has the nutritional value of about 25 normal
chicken eggs!” said Dr. Amir Gorzalczany.“There is sometimes even
evidence of decorating and incising on ostrich eggs, showing their use
as decorative items. It is interesting, that whilst ostrich eggs are not
uncommon in excavations, the bones of the large bird are not found.
This may indicate that in the ancient world, people avoided tackling the
ostrich and were content with collecting their eggs,” he said.

UN secretary-general says settlements drive conflict,
slams ‘unilateral initiatives’At Security Council, Antonio Guterres
singles out Israel alongside Russia, North Korea, Afghanistan and
Myanmar, condemns violence on both sides-By Luke Tress-jan 12,23-Today,
9:25 pm
NEW YORK — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres condemned violence on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict and said Israeli actions were fueling tensions, in a Thursday
address to the Security Council.“2022 was a deadly year for both
Palestinians and Israelis. We condemn all unlawful killings and acts by
extremists. There is no justification for terrorism,” Guterres said at a
debate on international law held at UN headquarters in New York.“At the
same time, the expansion of settlements by Israel, as well as home
demolitions and evictions, are driving anger and despair,” Guterres
said.“I am also very concerned by the unilateral initiatives that we
have seen in recent days. The rule of law is at the heart of achieving a
just and comprehensive peace, based on a two-state solution, in line
with UN resolutions, international law and previous agreements,” he
said.UN officials and the international community have widely condemned
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s visit to Jerusalem’s
flashpoint Temple Mount earlier this month, describing it as a
unilateral Israeli threat to the fragile status quo that governs the
holy site. The Security Council held an emergency session on the visit
that saw heated debate between the Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian
representatives.Israel’s envoy to the UN, Gilad Erdan, called the
session “absurd” in light of the council’s inaction on other global
developments, while the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour,
warned of an “uprising” surrounding the Temple Mount at the session,
saying the site could become “the epicenter of religious
conflict.”Guterres highlighted the International Court of Justice and
its role in enforcing international law in his Thursday address. The top
UN court is set to investigate Israel after a highly contentious
General Assembly vote last month that Israel called biased and
dismissive of its security concerns.“I note the importance of accepting
the compulsory jurisdiction of the court and call on all member states
to do so without any reservations,” Guterres said.He also stressed the
importance of the UN’s commissions of inquiry and fact-finding
missions. There are open-ended investigations against Israel being
carried out by a UN commission of inquiry, and by a special rapporteur,
the only country under such scrutiny. Members of both investigations are
on the record as making antisemitic statements, but have not faced any
repercussions from the UN for their comments.Israel was one of only a
few countries Guterres mentioned, along with Russia, North Korea,
Afghanistan, Myanmar and Haiti.Israel and the US have long accused the
UN of having a lopsided focus and bias against the Jewish state. Last
year, the General Assembly passed more resolutions critical of Israel
than against all other nations combined.

Analysis-Who
heads the court, and 2 other overlooked core components of the judicial
overhaul-Levin’s bill remakes terms for choosing High Court president,
aims to prevent justices blocking his whole package, allows
re-legislation of any law the justices strike down-By Jeremy Sharon-jan
12,23-Today, 5:01 pm
The planned radical shake-up of Israel’s
judicial and legal system introduced by Justice Minister Yariv Levin has
been roundly denounced by opponents as an effort to remove all
constraints on executive power and remove democratic safeguards from
Israel’s system of government. But there are three aspects of these
proposals, outlined in greater detail on Wednesday night with the
publication of Levin’s draft legislation, that would have particularly
profound consequences for the country.Changing the terms for choosing
the Supreme Court president-The first is the stipulation in this
legislation that the president of the Supreme Court, aka the chief
justice, will be selected by the (government-controlled) Judicial
Selection Committee, instead of the current system in which the justice
with the greatest number of years on the court becomes president after
the incumbent leaves.According to the draft bill, however, the court
president will not even need to already be a Supreme Court justice, as
is currently the case. Indeed, he or she would not even need to have
served as a judge on any lower court either. This is achieved in the
legislation by stipulating that the court’s president will be appointed
“in the same way Supreme Court judges are elected.” Since regular
Supreme Court judges do not need to be appointed from the lower courts,
so too under Levin’s reforms, the president could also be selected from
outside the benches of those courts. Why is this important? The Supreme
Court president has significant powers that affect the workings of the
court. These include choosing the size and composition of the panel for
any given case, and the authority to prevent a justice from being on a
panel for a particular case if the president believes that justice has a
conflict of interests. The Supreme Court president is also automatically
one of the three justices on the Judicial Selection Committee, and has
authority over disciplinary proceedings, including those to dismiss a
judge. If, as opponents of Levin’s reforms warn, the new government’s
legal overhaul is designed to take control of or radically restrain the
court, then the ability to select the president is crucial.Current
Supreme Court President Esther Hayut is due to retire this year, and the
ability to determine who will be the next president would give the new
government immediate and significant influence.-Protecting Levin’s
reform itself from High Court intervention-Another key element of
Levin’s reform package is that it is being passed as a Basic Law, or
more accurately an amendment to Basic Law: Judiciary, giving it
quasi-constitutional status. This amendment will explicitly stipulate
that the Supreme Court in its role as High Court of Justice will be
prohibited from even hearing petitions against Basic Laws, and any
ruling by the court on Basic Laws will have no validity. In his
announcement of the broad aspects of the reform plans last week, Levin
did not specify that his proposals would be enacted through a Basic
Law.But this stipulation is a logical necessity for the justice minister
and the government, since it seeks to prevent the High Court from
assessing whether this constitutional amendment itself violates the
provisions of Israel’s Basic Laws and its core values, as determined in
key state documents such as the Declaration of Independence.Again, if
the idea is to radically rein in the judiciary then this provision is
absolutely necessary in order to prevent the High Court from annulling
Levin’s legal revolution. It is important to note, however, that the High
Court has partially developed a doctrine for coping with what is known
as an “unconstitutional constitutional amendment.” In her decision on
the Basic Law: Nation State, Hayut wrote that the only instance where
the Knesset’s authority to legislate Basic Laws might be limited is if
it revokes “ Israel’s essence as a Jewish and democratic state.”Although
she did not write whether in her opinion the High Court would have the
ability to intervene in such a situation, the possibility nevertheless
remains open.Going down this avenue would, however, inevitably lead to a
constitutional crisis, bearing in mind Levin’s fierce insistence that
the court not involve itself in the country’s constitutional
concerns.Anything can be re-legislatedFinally, but no less importantly,
Levin has insisted throughout the unveiling process of his radical legal
shake-up that the principle of judicial review over Knesset legislation
will be preserved, albeit in a dramatically constrained manner.Despite
this assertion, written into the draft legislation is a clause that
would make a piece of Knesset legislation totally untouchable should a
majority of 61 MKs wish it so.According to the draft bill, the Knesset
would not be able to re-legislate in the same Knesset term a law struck
down by the High Court by a unanimous decision of a full panel of
justices. But, the legislation specifies, a new Knesset could
subsequently re-legislate that law and override the court’s unanimous
decision. In essence, this means that even the extremely narrow
conditions under which the High Court can determine a law to be in
fundamental violation of the civil rights set out in the Basic Laws can
be ultimately be overturned by the will of the Knesset majority.

Biden
administration pressed on classified docs found at think tank-Aides to
US president reportedly uncover ‘at least one additional batch’ of
unsecured files, complicating probe into Trump’s hoarding of secret
documents at Mar-a-Lago-By Sebastian Smith-jan 12,23-Today, 5:44 pm
WASHINGTON
(AFP) — The White House faced aggressive questioning on Wednesday over
the discovery of classified documents apparently mislaid by US President
Joe Biden, a case complicating the authorities’ probe into a far bigger
scandal involving Donald Trump.NBC News, followed by other US outlets,
reported Wednesday that Biden aides had discovered “at least one
additional batch” of unsecured documents. So far, the White House has
confirmed that a “small number” of classified documents — reportedly
around 10 — were uncovered in a locked closet at a Washington think tank
where Biden used to have an office before becoming president. The
documents themselves date from his time as vice president to Barack
Obama. The latest revelation guarantees the story won’t die down quickly,
with unpredictable consequences for the future of the probe into Trump,
who hoarded gigantic numbers of documents at his Florida residence
after leaving the White House in 2021.Although the Trump case is more
serious — the FBI carted away some 11,000 documents after serving a
search warrant in August and Trump could face obstruction of justice
charges — the Biden version is at minimum embarrassing to a president
who touts his high ethical standards.Analysts also say it could also
introduce complicated political considerations into the probe of Trump,
who is already arguing that Biden should come under the same
scrutiny.“When is the FBI going to raid the many homes of Joe Biden,
perhaps even the White House,” he wrote on his social media site Truth
Social. The White House says that if mistakes were made, the
administration at least immediately acted to rectify the situation. As
soon as the first batch of documents was discovered in Biden’s former
office at the Penn Biden Center think tank last November, lawyers turned
them over to the National Archives, which handles all such materials,
the White House counsel’s office said.In addition, lawyers for Biden
have been in the process of scouring possible locations for any other
stray documents, the counsel’s office said. That may explain the
surfacing of yet more papers on Wednesday — and possibly lead to more to
come.In a bid to defuse accusations of political interference, Attorney
General Merrick Garland has put a Chicago federal prosecutor appointed
during the Trump administration to review the lost Biden documents. That
response differentiates starkly from Trump, who did not cooperate with
authorities’ repeated attempts to track down missing documents — leading
to the FBI entering his home with a search warrant. At a briefing with
reporters on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre repeatedly
tried to shut down questions, saying that because the Justice Department
is investigating the Biden documents she cannot comment. That didn’t
stop the questions, however.“We’re going to be limited on what we can
say here,” she said.Pressed repeatedly, she pointed reporters to Biden’s
own carefully phrased statement made during a press conference at the
end of a summit in Mexico on Tuesday. Biden stressed that he did not
know the contents of the discovered documents and “people know I take
classified documents, classified information seriously.”Facing yet more
questioning, Jean-Pierre said: “I’m not going to go beyond what the
president shared yesterday. I’m not going to go beyond what my
colleagues at the White House counsel shared with all of you as well.”

Lawyers rally outside Tel Aviv court against
‘dangerous’ judicial overhaul-Hundreds of attorneys stage rare
demonstration amid Netanyahu government’s push to remake judiciary,
which they call a threat to democracy: ‘We won’t let it happen!’By
AFP-jan 12,23-Today, 7:12 pm
Hundreds of Israeli lawyers rallied
Thursday outside a Tel Aviv court to protest against the government’s
controversial plans to overhaul the judicial system. The rare
demonstration by attorneys follows the justice minister outlining
proposals such as allowing politicians to override Supreme Court
decisions.Wearing her black robe, lawyer Orna Sher said the “dangerous”
proposals by Justice Minister Yariv Levin were a threat to
democracy.“The nomination of judges will be political. Court won’t be
independent, but controlled by politicians,” the 66-year-old said
outside the district court.Around 400 demonstrators joined the rally, an
AFP journalist said, some waving Israeli flags.Levin wants to hand more
powers to members of Knesset in appointing judges, which are currently
picked through a panel of magistrates, lawyers and politicians, under
the supervision of the Justice Ministry. He has also proposed an
“override clause,” which would allow the Knesset to annul a Supreme
Court decision with a simple majority.Analysts say such a clause could
allow lawmakers to uphold any annulment of the corruption charges facing
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, should the Knesset vote to absolve
him and the Supreme Court then rule against it.In an open letter
published Thursday, a group of former state attorneys and attorney
generals said they were “shocked” by Levin’s program.“We call on the
government to retract the plan it published and prevent the severe
damage to the court system and rule of law,” wrote the 11 senior
jurists, many of whom also served as Supreme Court judges. In Tel Aviv,
lawyer Bruria Lekner said the proposed measures amounted to “destruction
and a regression.”“We have to stop that,” she told the crowd, as
protesters chanted “shame!” and “we won’t let it happen!”The new justice
minister entered office last month, as part of Israel’s most right-wing
government, led by Netanyahu.Announcing his reform program last week,
Levin said it is “up to the elected government to decide the laws.”But
the proposals were slammed Monday as “radical regime change” by
opposition leader Yair Lapid, who said the plans amount to the
“elimination of democracy.”
Op-ed-Here comes the new regime in
Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu’s ‘democratic dictatorship’The prime minister
has unleashed his justice minister to neutralize the High Court, the
only effective brake on government excess, and secure him unbridled
power-By David Horovitz,jan 12,23-Today, 6:40 am
An earlier
version of this Editor’s Note was sent out Wednesday in ToI’s weekly
update email to members of the Times of Israel Community. To receive
these Editor’s Notes as they’re released, join the ToI Community
here.Yariv Levin has been formulating proposals to curb the powers of
the High Court of Justice for 20 years, he told the nation last week.
And for most of those 20 years, though Levin was a loyal and respected
colleague in their Likud party, those revolutionary plans placed him at
odds with Benjamin Netanyahu, a longtime outspoken defender of the
independence and authority of the court.Returning to office on December
29, however, Netanyahu signaled that the path was clear for Levin to
introduce his long-conceived judicial revolution by appointing him as
justice minister. And just six days later, Levin unleashed his proposed
onslaught.Unveiled with what was either deliberately threatening or
thoroughly indifferent timing, on the eve of a High Court hearing on
petitions against the “reasonableness” of recidivist criminal Shas party
leader Aryeh Deri’s return to ministerial office, one of Levin’s four
promised “first stage” changes would cancel the very capacity of the
justices to invoke “reasonableness” as a measure of legality; if he has
his way, the kind of judicial examination currently in progress
regarding Deri’s fitness for office would simply be forbidden.Overall,
indeed, Levin’s “reforms” would combine to render the court almost
totally incapable of thwarting any of the goals of any Israeli governing
majority, as advanced via government decisions or Knesset legislation.
His proposals, already taking shape with lightning speed as draft
legislation published on Wednesday, require a “special majority” in an
expanded bench of justices to strike down laws and/or decisions deemed
to contradict Israel’s quasi-constitutional Basic Laws. And even were
this to happen, the coalition majority could simply re-legislate such
laws via a so-called “override clause.” Re-legislation would be barred
only if all 15 High Court justices ruled unanimously to strike down a
law — a tall order, made impossibly remote by another of Levin’s
proposals that would give the coalition a majority on the panel that
selects the justices in the first place.Even the likes of Israel’s
former Supreme Court president Aharon Barak have spoken in support of a
reform of the balance of power between Israel’s executive and judiciary —
our only two powerful branches of government, since the legislature is a
mere tool in the hands of a unified majority coalition such as the one
Netanyahu leads today. Barak would back an “override clause” were it to
form part of an additional Basic Law, on legislation, provided it
required a degree of coalition-opposition consensus to overrule the
justices. But what Levin intends to execute, Barak argued in three
frantic TV interviews on Saturday, would neutralize the court and leave
Israelis with no protection whatsoever against the removal of any of
their rights by the prime minister and his government.Predicting that
Levin’s package, if fully realized, would mark no less than the
beginning of the end of modern Israel, Barak paraphrased the German
pastor Martin Niemoller’s confessional lament about terrible silence in
the face of the rise of Nazism to warn that Israelis must not be like
the man who “when they told him they’re killing the communists, says I
don’t care, I’m not a communist. And then when they’re killing the
liberals, he says, I don’t care, I’m not a liberal. And then ultimately,
when he says, they’re killing my family, there’ll be nobody to turn to.
That is what is likely to happen.”In his anguish, Barak offered to lay
down his life if that would somehow prevent the evil decree, and
suggested that were he on the bench that he headed in 1995-2006, he
would resign rather than stay merely to do the prime minister’s bidding.
Of course, nothing would delight Levin, and presumably Netanyahu, more
than a mass resignation of the current, fairly diverse bench; all the
easier to pack it with less inconvenient jurists. In an interview with
The Times of Israel published Wednesday morning, a former deputy
president of the court, Elyakim Rubinstein, counseled that “resigning
means desperation, and we shouldn’t come to that.”Still, Rubinstein, who
once served as Netanyahu’s attorney-general, made plain that he shares
much of Barak’s distress at Israel’s potential shift to what he called
“democratic dictatorship” — an oxymoron more familiar from the
Constitution of the People’s Republic of China.Ostensibly magnanimous in
his declared bid to “restore” Israeli democracy, Levin is promising
that his vision will be fully debated in the Knesset’s Constitution, Law
and Justice Committee and in the plenum, that “all views will be
heard,” and that the legislative process will be conducted “with
patience.” But Levin has also said he hopes the legislation will reflect
his proposals as closely as possible and that “nothing will deter me.”
And an official in the office of MK Simcha Rothman, the far-right
Religious Zionism MK who chairs that committee, told the Times of Israel
that the government intends to get the proposals passed into law by the
end of March. If — or rather, it would seem, when — the court is denied
the capacity to protect Israelis from abuse by its hardline government,
we know what we can expect:The coalition agreements between Likud and
its far-right and ultra-Orthodox partners provide, for instance, for
legislation to allow discrimination on the grounds of religious belief; a
widened exclusion from military and any other national service for the
ultra-Orthodox community; state funding for ultra-Orthodox schools with
limited oversight and without the teaching of a core curriculum; the
legalizing of West Bank settlements hitherto acknowledged as illegal
because they are built on private Palestinian land; restricting the
provisions of the Law of Return; and changes to the criminal code that,
applied retroactively, would ease Netanyahu’s legal woes — all areas
where the High Court has previously weighed in and/or would be expected
to if it were able.Saturday night’s test-As the full crushing weight of
what Levin and the Netanyahu-led coalition intend to impose has
registered with at least part of the electorate, calls for mass protests
and demonstrations to resist it are rising — and so too the expressions
of intolerance by members of the coalition for such resistance. On
Monday, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid vowed to wage “a war over our
home,” while Benny Gantz, the defense minister until two weeks ago,
warned that the judicial overhaul could lead to “civil war” and urged
the public to lawfully take to the streets, declaring: “It’s time to go
out en masse and demonstrate; it’s time to make the country trembleOn
Tuesday afternoon, in response, Otzma Yehudit MK Zvika Fogel accused
them and two other outspoken critics, former MKs Yair Golan and Moshe
Ya’alon, of “treason against the state” and called for their arrests.
“These four are now talking about war… If they were calling for
protests, I’d give them every right to protest. But they’re talking in
terms of me being an enemy.”Only several hours later did Netanyahu slap
Fogel down — unequivocally, but with a twist. His statement began, “In a
democratic country, opposition chiefs aren’t arrested…” but continued
“… just like government ministers aren’t called Nazis, Jewish
governments aren’t called the Third Reich and civil disobedience among
the public isn’t encouraged.” The Nazi-related reference was to placards
likening Levin and the Netanyahu government to the Nazis that were
brandished at an anti-government demonstration on Saturday in Tel
Aviv.Placards Fogel’s party leader, National Security Minister Itamar
Ben Gvir, told Army Radio on Wednesday morning that the police force he
oversees will not be arresting political opponents, but added that he
“absolutely understands” how Fogel feels, “when he wakes up every
morning to personal threats against him and against his state, against
all of our state.”Ben Gvir is calling for a toughened police response to
demonstrations, including arrests of those who “block roads and get
wild” and, complaining that ultra-Orthodox anti-draft demonstrators in
Jerusalem get rougher treatment by police than the Tel Aviv protesters,
equality in the use of water cannons.Netanyahu, on Wednesday night,
appeared to back such toughened policing of protests, declaring that in a
properly functioning democracy, “there can be no violence — no license
for violence, no license to block roads or to carry out other actions
that harm the citizens.”A much larger demonstration than last week’s is
planned for Tel Aviv on Saturday night. In the current fevered political
climate, with Israeli democracy being challenged as rarely if ever
before, it constitutes something of a test (including for the
organizers, who will want to attract the broadest participation, and not
deter concerned citizens who are alienated by Palestinian flags and
appalled by Nazi placards).Netanyahu, who promised his hands would be on
the wheel of his hard-right government, has unleashed Levin, watched
opposition concerns predictably mount, heard a far-right member of his
coalition accuse opposition leaders of treason and mildly slapped him
down-Israel, and indeed Netanyahu, knows only too well, however, when
the divides are particularly acute, not everybody knows when to stop.
