Muslim and Indigenous communities from across the country came together Saturday to build connections at a convention in Calgary.The annual Jalsa Salana Convention is the largest and longest-running Muslim convention in Western Canada. Held at the Genesis Centre in Calgary, this year's event marked the return of the convention after two years of cancellations due to the pandemic.Lal Khan Malik, national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at of Canada, who flew in from Toronto, was happy to be back at the event."It's really [a] delightful feeling to be together again after three years," he said.Malik said one of the main focuses of Saturday's conference was to build connections between Muslim and Indigenous communities. The BC Wildfire Service says a fire burning about 21 kilometres southwest of Penticton saw minimal growth overnight, but low visibility is making it difficult to fight the flames from the air.The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen issued an evacuation order on Saturday for communities in the vicinity of the Keremeos Creek wildfire, which was discovered Friday and was earlier described by the Wildfire Service as displaying "aggressive" and "erratic" behaviour.The order covers Green Mountain Road between Highway 3A to the south and Apex Mountain Road to the north, as well as the general vicinity of Ford Lake and the north end of Sheep Creek Road.The Wildfire Service says in an online update Sunday that the fire covers an area of more than four square kilometres, and that personnel conducted patrols and structural protection where necessary throughout the night.But it says poor visibility presents challenges for aerial resources, and it says the wildfire is in terrain that neither air tankers nor heavy machinery can operate in.The cause of the blaze has not been determined.Air tanker and heavy machinery support resources are on standby "as the incident evolves," the Wildfire Service notes in its Sunday update.The update also said that the Nohomin Creek wildfire about 1.7 kilometres northwest of Lytton, B.C., saw growth Saturday in high-elevation areas due to hot and dry conditions.It said helicopters bucketed the blaze steadily during the day, while rocky slopes and sparse fuels slowed its growth in certain areas.This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 31, 2022.The Canadian Press

HINDMAN, Ky. (AP) — Damage to critical infrastructure and the arrival of more heavy rains hampered efforts Sunday to help Kentucky residents hit by recent massive flooding, Gov. Andy Beshear said.As residents in Appalachia tried to slowly piece their lives back together, flash flood warnings were issued for at least eight eastern Kentucky counties. The National Weather Service said radar indicated up to 4 inches (10.2 centimeters) of rain fell Sunday in some areas, with more rain possible.Beshear said the death toll climbed to 26 on Sunday from last week's storms, a number he expected to rise significantly and that it could take weeks to find all the victims.As many as 37 people were unaccounted for, according to a daily briefing from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A dozen shelters were open for flood victims in Kentucky with 388 occupants on Sunday.Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the U.S. National Guard Bureau, told The Associated Press about 400 people have been rescued by National Guard helicopter. He estimated that the guard had rescued close to 20 by boat from hard-to-access areas.At a news conference in Knott County, Beshear praised the fast arrival of FEMA trailers but noted the numerous challenges.“We have dozens of bridges that are out — making it hard to get to people, making it hard to supply people with water," he said. "We have entire water systems down that we are working hard to get up.”Beshear said it will remain difficult, even a week from now, to "have a solid number on those accounted for.
