The new study, published in the journal Nature Immunology and based on 12,413 employees of Israel’s largest hospital, Sheba Medical Center, found that levels of IgG — one of the main antibody types — increased 1.7-fold on average after a third dose compared with the rise following the second dose. The biggest rises were among the young and healthy.It also found that the strength — or avidity — of antibodies was significantly higher after the third shot than after the second shot. The study also provides hard evidence that the assumption of scientists that higher antibodies do indeed protect from infection is correct, and therefore measuring antibody levels is a good guide for assessing levels of protection. It showed that “breakthrough” infections, meaning infections after vaccination or recovery, were more common among people whose antibody levels had dropped.The authors, led by Dr. Gili Regev-Yochay, director of Sheba’s Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit, wrote that “given at least 5 months after the second dose, [a third dose] safely boosts protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection by substantially inducing broad humoral and cellular responses.” Humoral responses are those in the body’s fluids.The study is important, according to Prof. Cyrille Cohen, a Bar Ilan University immunologist who wasn’t involved in it.“Although several studies documented the effectiveness of a third mRNA vaccine dose compared to two doses, this new study actually provides direct and real-world data on antibody levels among hundreds of subjects,” he told The Times of Israel.“This work provides mechanistic insights as to how these vaccines work, showing for example that not only the number of antibodies goes up after a third dose, but also their quality or avidity increases, which is important and useful to understand as health authorities plan their vaccine strategies.”

JTA — A Jewish cemetery in Hlukhiv, Ukraine, was reportedly shelled Sunday in fighting close to the Russian border.The cemetery, where about 1,500 Jews are buried, is the latest Jewish site to face damage amid the 10-week-old war that began when Russia invaded Ukraine Feb. 24.Many of the Jews buried in the cemetery were victims of a 1918 pogrom. Among them are Samuel Nokhimovich Shumyatsky, an older brother of a well known rabbi, and a shochet, or butcher, named Ber Izrailevich Barkan, according to Ukraine’s Kourier news site.Ukrainian Minister of Culture Oleksander Tkachenko said in a statement that influential rabbis were also buried in the cemetery.“This is not only a monument to history, it is a special symbol for the entire Jewish people,” Ukrainian Minister of Culture Oleksander Tkachenko said in a statement. “The proof that all the higher powers are on our side is that the graves of the chief tsadik [Hasidic spiritual leader] have survived.”In the past, Jewish sites that have been damaged by Russian shelling have become symbols for the Ukrainians, who are battling the Russians’ false claim that their country is run by Nazis. In the early days of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is Jewish, highlighted damage to a memorial for Jews murdered by the Nazis and local collaborators at Babyn Yar, as well as shelling in Uman, a Jewish pilgrimage site, as evidence that Russian forces are trying to obliterate Ukrainian history.At least one other Holocaust memorial, on the outskirts of Kharkiv, was damaged in the war. Military analysts believe the Hamas terror group is not behind a recent string of deadly terror attacks, but has rather been “riding the wave” to encourage further violence, defense officials said Monday.In an assessment delivered to political leaders, the Israel Defense Forces presented a picture of the terror group milking the successful assaults for their PR value and to push more Palestinians to take similar action. The group was not directly involved in orchestrating the attacks, the IDF said, even one that it claimed responsibility for.Nineteen people have been killed and several more have been hurt in a series of attacks in Israel and the West Bank since March 22. Several recent terrorists have been claimed by Hamas as members, but the group has stopped short of claiming responsibility in most cases, aside from a deadly attack in Ariel late last month.Hamas’s Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar has been fingered by Israeli leaders and pundits for fiery speeches urging attacks and calls for his assassination growing louder in recent days, despite the near-certain possibility that it would spark a new war.However, the military does not believe Sinwar to be a major inciting factor driving the attacks, describing Hamas as reactionary, rather than enterprising.An Israeli hit on Sinwar or another senior Gaza terror leader would almost certainly spark a fresh round of hostilities, just a year after an 11-day war that left both Israel and the Palestinian enclave deeply scarred.The military assessment said the attacks were largely fueled by religious and nationalist tensions, including recent clashes on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. President Vladimir Putin said Monday that Russian forces in Ukraine were fighting to defend the motherland from an “absolutely unacceptable threat,” evoking the “hangmen, executioners and the Nazis” of World War II.The Russian president made the comments in a speech to thousands of soldiers as he opened the annual parade marking victory over Nazi Germany. According to the Reuters news agency, he did not mention Ukraine by name in the speech.“You are fighting for the motherland, so that no one will forget the lessons of World War II and there will be no place in the world for hangmen, executioners and the Nazis,” he said.Putin additionally claimed Kyiv and its allies had been preparing “an invasion of our historical lands” including in the Russian-speaking Donbas region and in Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014.“An absolutely unacceptable threat to us was being created, directly on our borders,” Putin said, pointing to NATO weapon deliveries to Ukraine and the deployment of foreign advisers.Ukraine was invaded by Russia in late February, with Moscow claiming its operation was in part to “de-Nazify” the country, despite the fact that it is a country led by a Jewish president.Russia had no choice, Putin said, but to undertake a preemptive response to aggression, calling it “the only right decision” for a “sovereign, strong and independent country.”Putin told thousands of troops gathered in Moscow’s Red Square that Russian forces in Ukraine were continuing the battle against Nazism, but that it was important “to do everything so that the horror of a global war does not happen again.”Putin made no major announcements in the speech, despite reports in the West that he could use the anniversary to announce an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine or a general mobilization in Russia.Instead, Putin looked to rally public support for the campaign by linking the current conflict to what Russians call the Great Patriotic War.Putin claimed that Russian troops were fighting for the country’s security in Ukraine and observed a minute of silence to honor the troops who fell in combat. (AP Photo/Alexander Zemlianichenko)At the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin reminded the West that Russia had nuclear weapons by putting them on “special combat readiness.”Putin’s actions suggested that Russia was considering their use, even though actually launching them was a remote possibility. In precisely what circumstances Russia might use nuclear weapons was left vague — Putin’s intent was presumably to frighten NATO and discourage its intervention on behalf of Ukraine.Since then, much has changed — and not for the better in terms of the risk of nuclear war.Although NATO hasn’t sent troops to fight in Ukraine, the West has implemented increasingly tough economic sanctions against Russia and provided Ukraine with military equipment like tanks.NATO is now involved in what is, in essence, a full-fledged proxy war against Russia. Not only have NATO nations — particularly the United States — provided Ukraine with an array of different weapons, but they are clearly helping Ukraine with other elements of its war effort, including intelligence — some of which has been used to target Russian generals.Ukraine emboldened-From the failure to take Kyiv to the plodding pace of Soviet gains in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, the war has not gone according to plan. Russia has taken heavy losses due to the intense Ukrainian resistance.Russian troops will likely dig in and seek to consolidate their gains in the east. Reasserting independence from Ukraine for the separatist regions — backed up by troops on the ground — could be presented by Putin as a Russian win. He could then declare his “special military operation” over.Ukraine could subsequently reach some sort of peace agreement with Russia involving loss of territory — one that probably wouldn’t be much different from the sort of agreement that could be negotiated today.Currently there is no sign of Ukrainian inclination to negotiate over the Donbas region. Nor is Ukraine willing to formally give up Crimea, seized by Russia in 2014 after the pro-western and anti-Russian Euromaidan revolution in Ukraine.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made clear his war aim is to liberate all Ukrainian territory in Russian hands, including Crimea. His NATO backers — most vocally the U.S., the U.K. and Canada — are willing to provide Ukraine with the means to do so.These countries hope to see Russia come out of this war significantly weakened as a regional power.The Russian nuclear threat-While committing NATO forces directly to Ukraine is unlikely, some hawkish western commentators have suggested NATO could do so without Russia retaliating with nuclear weapons.Even though Russia raised the spectre of nuclear weapons at the beginning of the war, as it progressed, Russian sources suggested that nuclear weapons would only be used in the event of an existential threat to Russia.Recent Russian nuclear sabre-rattling — such as the testing and deployment of more advanced missiles or Russian TV segments showing the impact of a nuclear attack on the U.K. — is undoubtedly cause for concern, but it doesn’t make the use of nuclear weapons significantly more likely in the short term.What would? If the war was to turn in Ukraine’s favour and Ukrainian forces started not only to recapture swaths of territory in the east, but to threaten the separatist regions — or Crimea.Some western observers have suggested that Russia might employ an “escalate to de-escalate” strategy in such circumstances, using tactical nuclear weapons. Launching them in territory likely to be held by the enemy, instead of where Russia hopes to retain control, makes a lot more sense.If the war escalates to the point where a western-backed Ukraine threatens territory Putin considers to be Russian, then the chances of nuclear weapons being employed would increase dramatically.-The problem of Crimea-Zelenskyy has suggested that Ukraine will not stop fighting until Crimea is in Ukrainian hands. But for Putin and many Russians, Crimea is Russian.Crimea’s incorporation into Ukraine in 1954 is often seen as a historical accident, rather than an expression of Crimea being ethnically Ukrainian.Crimea’s Tatar population was largely displaced by ethnic Russians — not Ukrainians — and it has a long history as Russian. From Leo Tolstoy’s Sevastpol Sketches, for example, to Vasily Aksyonov’s 1970s novel The Island of Crimea, Crimea is widely represented in Russian literature.A credible western-backed threat to Crimea would undoubtedly constitute the sort of existential threat to Russian territory that would dramatically increase the risk of nuclear weapons being used.-A distant but increased nuclear threat-Putin’s frustration over Ukrainian resilience and western support is clearly increasing — recent nuclear posturing is evidence of that. The nuclear threat has been increasing since February, even if the use of nuclear weapons probably isn’t imminent.Even the use of low-yield tactical nuclear weapons by Russia would likely provoke some sort of western response. Such a response would then increase the likelihood of further escalation. Informed estimates suggest Russia has more than 1,900 non-strategic or tactical nuclear weapons. The threshold for their use is lower than for larger nuclear weapons.The sort of scenarios that might lead to the use of nuclear weapons are outside the immediate confines Putin’s war in Ukraine. It would require a significant deterioration in Russian fortunes — and greater western involvement in the conflict.Nonetheless, not since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 or nuclear tensions in the early 1980s has the spectre of potential nuclear war loomed so large in the future.Back in 1962, politicians on all sides ultimately showed their statesman-like qualities and stepped back from their threat to employ nuclear weapons. Police were forced to evacuate homes in Ness Ziona on Monday, as firefighters struggled to contain a wildfire that broke out near the central town.The wildfire started in an open field between Ness Ziona and the adjacent town of Irus on Monday. About 15 firefighting crews were working to extinguish the fire, but as a precaution the police evacuated the first line of homes closest to the blaze.Firefighters eventually managed to get the blaze under the control, and remained in the area to ensure to hotspots reignited. Residents were asked to say away.No injuries or damage to homes or property was reported, according to local news site Ness Ziona Net.The wildfire came as the region saw a larger-than-average jump in temperatures on Monday from 59°F (15°C) in the morning to 87°F (31°C) by late afternoon. The Israel Meteorological Service reported that strong winds would prevail in the south and would pick up during the day, particularly along the country’s coast.Temperatures were expected to hover around seasonal averages for next three days.

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba government said Monday it would offer financial aid for flood victims as wet weather threatened to raise rivers again and prolong an already soggy spring.The province expects to spend well over $10 million under Disaster Finance Assistance — a long-standing program cost-shared with the federal government that covers large-scale catastrophes. It pays for losses not covered by insurance at private properties, business, non-profits and by municipalities."The program will ensure that non-insurable losses — so, damages to basic and essential property, response costs and infrastructure damage — are covered," Johanu Botha, head of the province's emergency management organization, said.Heavy snowfall and spring rainstorms have left many parts of Manitoba flooded, and some 30 municipalities and First Nations are under local states of emergency.The hardest-hit area is Peguis First Nation, 160 kilometres north of Winnipeg, where some 1,800 people have evacuated homes surrounded or flooded by the swollen Fisher River. The river has dropped in recent days, but with more rain in the forecast this week it is likely to rise again."We are expecting flooding to reoccur in areas where the water levels have receded," read a notice posted Monday on the community's official Facebook page. The water may rise to a point 30 centimetres above its highest level last week, the notice added.To the south, the Red River between the United States border and Winnipeg is expected to crest this week.The river has already become a lake in some areas, flooding farmland and roads including the main highway between Winnipeg and North Dakota.
