AND I WAS IN MY ROOM FOR THE NEXT 6 DAYS. ON THE 3RD DAY IN. THE NURSE CAME TO ME TO TAKE MY BLOOD PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE AND BOO UP THE NOSE TEST. NOW ALL MY EXPERIENCES IN ISOLATION.WELL AFTER THE 2ND DAY I WAS FEELING FINE EXCEPT FOR THE ODD COUPHING AND SNEEZING. FROM THEN ON I HAD REALLY TOUGH DAYS. COVID czar: 2,000 medical workers currently out due to virus-Coronavirus czar Salman Zarka says that there are approximately 2,000 medical personnel across the country who are in quarantine either due to testing positive for COVID or being exposed to a positive case.There are currently 116,411 active COVID cases in Israel.After a report earlier today said health officials were considering allowing medical personnel who test positive but remain asymptomatic to continue working, the head of the doctors union lashed out.“We will not agree in any way to allow doctors who test positive to continue to work as normal,” said Prof. Zion Hagay, chairman of the Israel Medical Association, calling the suggestion dangerous for public health.

A team of scientists in Cyprus has identified a strain of the coronavirus that apparently combines many of the characteristics of the Delta and Omicron variants, according to a report on Saturday.Bloomberg News said the discovery was given the moniker “Deltacron” due to the identification of “Omicron-like genetic signatures within the Delta genomes.”Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus and head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology, told Sigma TV in an interview cited by Bloomberg that 25 such cases had been identified so far.“There are currently Omicron and Delta co-infections and we found this strain that is a combination of these two,” Kostrikis said.Kostrikis said although it was not yet known how infectious or pathological the combined strain was, he believed it would likely be displaced by the highly contagious Omicron variant.The Cypriot team has sent the information on the combined strain to the GISAID global science initiative, which is tracking variants.The potential new variant came as the Omicron strain surged around the world.The World Health Organization said Thursday that a record 9.5 million COVID-19 cases were tallied globally over the last week, a 71% increase from the previous seven-day period. However, the number of weekly recorded deaths declined.While Omicron seems less severe than the Delta variant it has swiftly replaced, especially among people who have been vaccinated, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautioned against treating it lightly.“Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalizing people, and it’s killing people,” he said. “In fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick that it is overwhelming health systems around the world.”The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The technology developed by spyware firm NSO should be more strictly regulated but not discarded altogether, Israel’s cybersecurity guru said — though he acknowledged that the scandal surrounding the Herzliya-based firm was blackening Israel’s reputation.The NSO scandal “is spoiling our name,” Prof. Isaac Ben-Israel, who led the task force that set out Israel’s national cybersecurity policy, said in a recent interview with The Times of Israel from his office at Tel Aviv University.Ben-Israel was head of military research and development in the Israeli army and at the Defense Ministry from 1991 to 1997. In January 1998, he was promoted to major general and appointed director of the Defense R&D Directorate at the ministry. During his service, he twice received the Israeli Defense Award. Post-army, he was central to the establishment of Israel’s National Cyber Bureau and other authorities protecting national civilian and security infrastructure from cyberattacks.Ben-Israel said that of all exports of Israeli cybersecurity products and services — which accounts for some 10% of global market sales — offensive products like those developed by NSO and Candiru, two companies recently blacklisted by the US Department of Commerce, are just a “small percentage” of the total.Unfortunately, in the public eye this is irrelevant as people tend not to distinguish between defensive and offensive cybersecurity tools. As a result, the damage to Israel’s reputation is comprehensive, explained the 72-year-old Ben-Israel, who today heads the ICRC – Blavatnik Interdisciplinary Cyber Research Center at Tel Aviv University.NSO’s flagship spyware, Pegasus, is considered one of the most powerful cyber-surveillance tools available on the market, and experts say there is no defense against it. The software gives operators the ability to effectively take full control of a target’s phone, download all data from the device, or activate its camera or microphone without the user knowing. The company has made global headlines as revelations about the reach of its technology, and the consequences, keep piling up.This summer, Citizen Lab and Amnesty International unveiled an in-depth probe that found that the firm’s software had been used by many countries with poor human rights records to hack the phones of thousands of human rights activists, journalists, and politicians from Saudi Arabia to Mexico.As a consequence, NSO has been facing a torrent of international criticism over the allegations, with mounting diplomatic fallout as Israeli allies, such as France, demanded answers amid reports that Pegasus was being used within their borders.The Washington Post reported last month that NSO’s Pegasus spyware had been placed on the cellphone of the wife of journalist Jamal Khashoggi months before he was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018. Other reports claimed the spyware had targeted Polish opposition politicians and an Indian activist.The US blacklisting of the two Israeli firms has pushed Israel to dramatically scale back the number of countries to which local companies can sell cyber technologies and impose new restrictions on the export of cyber warfare tools. The Israeli Defense Ministry must authorize the sale of spyware firms’ products abroad.NSO for its part has said that its products are meant only to assist countries in fighting serious crime and terrorism.The ensuing fallout has greatly affected the company, which became at risk of defaulting on about $500 million of debt and saw its credit rating take a dramatic hit, leading to issues of solvency.NSO is said to be considering shutting down its Pegasus operation and selling the entire company to an American investment fund, Bloomberg reported in December, citing officials involved in the talks.The Israeli government’s role-Private companies can freely export defensive technologies. But for offensive or even potentially offensive weapons, including offensive cyber technologies, private companies need to get a special export license from the government, said Ben-Israel.“As far as I know — I am not part of NSO — in all the cases they got an export license,” said Ben-Israel. “So, if there is some problem, perhaps the government was too easy with giving them the license. The problem is not with NSO but the government.”Technologies like those developed by NSO are used by governments to track criminal groups as well as terrorist groups, said Ben-Israel, arguing that these kinds of offensive tools are “essential” for democracies. “You don’t want to live in a country [that] doesn’t have a way to track terrorists or criminals.”But some governments have obviously misused such technologies to wield them against dissidents, he said, and that is the problem.“NSO is not a service company” and does not itself perform tracking, said Ben-Israel. NSO sells the technology, whereupon the governments that buy it use it or misuse it, said Ben-Israel.When a terrorist stabs someone or rams a car into people, he mused, the blame is laid on the wielder of the weapon or the driver, rather than the knife or car manufacturer. “The same is with NSO,” he said. “The Israeli government gave them a license to sell to certain countries like Mexico and others, [to be used] for a good reason.” If these countries used it for a different purpose, he asked rhetorically, is NSO to blame? Sometimes, Ben-Israel mused, you build something with good intentions, “and somehow you lose control of it. What can be done? I don’t know… What can you do, not develop those types of technologies anymore? “We need them. The free world needs them,” he posited.Cars are one of the main causes of death today because of traffic accidents. But no one would argue “we should go back to horses and donkeys,” Ben-Israel said. Instead, legislation and new safety features have made cars less lethal than they used to be.“Everything you introduce costs you sometimes.”In the long term, he forecast, Israel’s cybersecurity industry as a whole will not be affected significantly by the spyware scandal. “But if you look at NSO or Candiru, or these types of companies, it will affect them significantly. It may even destroy the companies,” he said.Beyond cybersecurity-Ben-Israel in 2011 was appointed by then-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to lead a task force to formulate a national cyber policy. This resulted in government resolutions aimed at making Israel a global cybersecurity powerhouse both for defense and the economy.“The goal was to position Israel among the five leading countries in cyber space capabilities by 2015,” he said.The hope was that Israel would account for 3% or, optimistically, 5% of the global cyber market share. “But we are much more today. The economic numbers are overwhelming.”Israeli exports of cybersecurity products total some $10 billion, of which some 10%, or $1 billion, is believed to be exports of offensive software, according to Calcalist.In the first half of the year, Israeli cybersecurity companies raised $3.4 billion in 50 deals and seven of them became unicorns — private companies valued at over $1 billion — the Israel National Cyber Directorate said. The half-year figure accounts for 41% of the total funds raised by cybersecurity firms worldwide, and is three times the amount raised in the same period a year earlier, the data shows.Israel’s next challenge, Ben-Israel said, will be artificial intelligence, a field. like cybersecurity, in which Israel can have a strategic global advantage.He submitted a five-year plan in 2019 to make Israel among the top five nations globally in artificial intelligence, a year after he was tasked with doing so by Netanyahu.But due to the political turmoil including four elections in two years and a lack of a national budget, “The National Initiative for Secured Intelligence Systems” is still on Ben-Israel’s desk, waiting for the new government to discuss and approve the plan.“We already lost three years because of politics and elections,” he said. “I hope we will not lose another three years with the new government.”Ricky Ben-David contributed to this report.

The Israel Democracy Institute and the Israel Internet Association filed an urgent request on Tuesday with the Knesset’s Ministerial Committee for Legislation to review a bill seeking to curtail “incitement” online that, they say, goes far beyond what any democratic country has allowed.The bill, dubbed the “Facebook Bill,” has been circulating since at least 2017 and on Monday night passed a key hurdle by receiving the required approval of the committee. The bill will now advance to a second and third reading in the plenum.Under the proposed bill, a judge would be able to issue an order requiring a content publisher to remove posts from its website, if law enforcement agencies are convinced that a criminal offense has been committed through the publication of the content. It essentially allows Israeli authorities to block posts from any website featuring user-generated content, including Google, Twitter and Facebook, as well as news sites from being seen by Israeli viewers, including those with a paywall and those that require user registration.The proposed legislation almost passed in 2018 when, at the last moment, (and following inquiries by The Times of Israel) then-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu stepped in to remove it from the Knesset docket. He said at the time that it could be interpreted to grant powers so broad as to threaten freedom of speech.The bill is now being promoted by Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar who welcomed the okay of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation.In their letter to the committee, Dr. Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler, a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute and head of its Democracy in the Information Age program, and Dr. Asaf Wiener, head of regulation and policy at the Israel Internet Association, outline several main problems with the Facebook Bill.“The bill is broader than necessary and offers a substantial and procedural opening for government censorship,” the authors wrote. “Moreover, the bill also makes it possible to remove content from institutional content sites, like Israeli and foreign newspapers, at a level of intrusion that does not exist in any other country in the democratic world.”Shwartz Altshuler told The Times of Israel on Tuesday that “the law applies to any website, with a paywall, or without, with registration or without. This means that one could go to court and ask for content removal even from news sites, which is unheard of.”She explained that the bill was far too wide-reaching, and would apply to sites of any size — those with thousands of visitors and those with millions — and those hosted on servers in Israel and abroad, “which means that they can actually approach a place like The Washington Post and ask for content removal from Israeli IP addresses.”Germany’s content removal legislation, for example, deals only with social media networks and excludes those with fewer than two million registered users in Germany.“It’s very wide and there are no limits. There’s no reason to do it like that,” she said.The bill was first conceived in late 2016 following a wave of deadly stabbing and car-ramming terror attacks perpetrated mainly by individual Palestinian attackers in the preceding two years.According to security authorities, incitement to violence or terror on social media platforms played a role in fueling these attacks and the initial legislation sought to provide authorities with tools to handle inciting content on the internet in Israel, specifically on social media, and especially in cases where the identity of the writer or poster was unknown or they were located outside of Israel and beyond its jurisdiction, Shwartz Altshuler explained on the Lawfare blog in 2018 with Rachel Aridor-Hershkovitz, a researcher in the Democracy in the Information Age Program at the Israel Democracy Institute.But the final version that almost passed was much broader and contained key references to the Israeli penal code under which content could potentially be removed if it pertains to any criminal offense under Israeli law, including those related to political discourse.Now, it’s back again with only “minor changes.”“The legislation contains references to all offenses in the Israeli penal code, and in this sense, it includes what we call ‘the political clauses.’ For example, defaming a political figure or incitement to racism. All these are criminal offenses with enforcement that could be considered very political,” Shwartz Altshuler said.By contrast, in Australia and Germany for example, “where they have legislation for content removal from social media, they’ve narrowed it to specific offenses from the penal codes, or to specific subjects… like offenses against minors, or nudity, or sexual violence, and actual harm” to individuals, as well as terror, she explained.In Israel, the bill would apply to any criminal offense that might harm public safety, not specifically a person’s safety or national security. “Public safety can be interpreted as public trust in the government and things like that, and I wouldn’t want the government to approach a court with the demand to remove content,” Shwartz Altshuler said.An additional problem is the process by which authorities can move to block content, as stated in the bill.“First, someone can report content to [the authorities]. Then they go and ask permission from the attorney-general, and then they go back to court and get an order within 48 hours. So the whole procedure will take 2-3 days. Three days is an eternity on the internet. This is not how you do content removal when you really need to do it. Not when it’s incitement to terror and not when it’s revenge porn,” Shwartz Altshuler.The suggestions put forth by Shwartz Altshuler and Wiener, of the Israel Internet Association, include limiting the legislation only to social media platforms, and to very severe life-or-death issues, as well as moving to have it removed within three hours.The proposed legislation not only “opens the door for government censorship,” but it is also “inefficient in the purpose, in removing real harmful content quickly,” said Shwartz Altshuler.As an example, she referenced an incident she was personally involved with relating to a Bedouin preteen from a conservative family in southern Israel whose brother had taken a photo of her without her hijab (head covering) and uploaded it, as a joke, to a social media platform where it was circulating.“They realized that once her dad finds out that her photo without her hijab was on Twitter, he was going to kill her, or beat her. You need to remove this photo immediately. I don’t have three days,” Shwartz Altshuler described.The legislation is “justified in the sense that there are pieces of content that need to be removed immediately from the internet,” but the definition of what type of content this applies to need to be very narrow and to be handled efficiently,’ she added.Shwartz Altshuler also said she was baffled by the decision to move forward with such a broad bill.“It’s weird to introduce it now. In 2018, it was obvious to everyone that the bill needed to be corrected. Sa’ar could have done that and he hasn’t. I don’t understand why they haven’t changed it,” she said, adding that she doubts it will have the support of the coalition as it stands.The timing was also off, she added. Sa’ar recently appointed a special committee under the Justice Ministry tasked with formulating regulatory recommendations vis-à-vis social media networks, and emerging technologies in Israel and abroad.“This committee had maybe two meetings until now and they haven’t come up with anything yet. On top of that, he’s now introducing this bill. Why aren’t you waiting for this committee? That’s their job,” said Shwartz Altshuler.

Shortly after coronavirus vaccines were rolled out about a year ago, women started reporting erratic menstrual cycles after receiving the shots.Some said their periods were late. Others reported heavier bleeding than usual or painful bleeding. Some postmenopausal women who hadn’t had a period in years even said they had menstruated again.A study published Thursday found that women’s menstrual cycles did indeed change after vaccination against the coronavirus. The authors reported that women who were inoculated had slightly longer menstrual cycles after receiving the vaccine than those who were not vaccinated.Sign up for The Morning newsletter from the New York TimesTheir periods, which came almost a day later on average, were not prolonged, however, and the effect was transient, with cycle lengths bouncing back to normal within one or two months. For example, someone with a 28-day menstrual cycle that starts with seven days of bleeding would still begin with a seven-day period, but the cycle would last 29 days. The cycle ends when the next period starts and would revert to 28 days within a month or two.The delay was more pronounced in women who received both vaccine doses during the same menstrual cycle. All were U.S. residents ages 18 to 45 who had logged their periods for at least six months.For those who were vaccinated, researchers examined the three cycles before and after the vaccine to look for changes, comparing them with a similar six-month duration in women who did not receive a vaccination.Overall, vaccination was associated with less than a full day’s change in cycle length, on average, after both vaccine doses, compared with pre-vaccine cycles. The unvaccinated group saw no significant changes over the six months.Future studies using the database will examine other aspects of menstruation, such as whether periods were heavier or more painful after vaccination.The findings of the new study may not apply equally to all women. Indeed, much of the change in cycle length was driven by a small group of 380 vaccinated women who experienced a change of at least two days in their cycle, said Dr. Alison Edelman, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Oregon Health & Science University and the paper’s lead author.Some women who were vaccinated had cycles that were eight days longer than usual, which is considered clinically significant, Edelman said.“Though the cycle length was less than one day different at the population level, for an individual, depending on their perspective and what they’re relying on menses for, that could be a big deal,” she said. “You might be expecting a pregnancy, you might be worrying about a pregnancy, you might be wearing white pants.”It’s not clear why the menstrual cycle might be affected by vaccination, but most women with regular periods experience an occasional unusual cycle or missed period. The president of Turkmenistan is calling for an end to one of the country’s most notable but infernal sights — the blazing natural gas crater widely referred to as the “Gates of Hell.”The desert crater located about 260 kilometers (160 miles) north of the capital, Ashgabat, has burned for decades and is a popular sight for the small number of tourists who come to Turkmenistan, a country which is difficult to enter.The Turkmen news site Turkmenportal said a 1971 gas-drilling collapse formed the crater, which is about 60 meters (190 feet) in diameter and 20 meters (70 feet) deep.To prevent the spread of gas, geologists set a fire, expecting the gas to burn off in a few weeks.The spectacular of unwelcome fire that has burned ever since is so renowned that state TV showed President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov speeding around it in an off-road truck in 2019.But Berdymukhamedov has ordered his government to look for ways to put the fire out because it is causing ecological damage and affecting the health of people living in the area, state newspaper Neitralny Turkmenistan reported Saturday. ???? Cold kills 22 stuck in cars in heavy snow at Pakistan resort-ZARAR KHAN-Sat, January 8, 2022, 3:56 AM

ISLAMABAD (AP) — At least 22 people, including 10 children, died in a popular mountain resort town in Pakistan after being stuck in their vehicles overnight during a heavy snowstorm as temperatures plummeted, officials said Saturday.

Most of the victims died of hypothermia, officials said. Among them was an Islamabad police officer and seven other members of his family, fellow police officer Atiq Ahmed said. More than 4 feet (1 meter) of snow fell in the area of the Murree Hills resort overnight Friday and early Saturday, trapping thousands of cars on roadways, said Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. The snow was so severe that heavy equipment brought in to clear it initially got stuck during the night, said Umar Maqbool, assistant commissioner for the town of Murree. Temperatures fell to minus 8 degrees Celsius (17.6 degrees Fahrenheit).Officials called in paramilitary troops and a special military mountain unit to help. By late Saturday, thousands of vehicles had been pulled from the snow but more than a thousand were still stuck, Ahmed said. Most roads leading to the area’s resorts were largely cleared of snow by late Saturday, and military troops were working to clear the rest, Maqbool said. The military also converted army-run schools into relief camps where they provided shelter and food for the tourists who had been rescued.Emergency officials distributed food and blankets to people while they were trapped in their snowed-in vehicles, but many died of hypothermia. Others may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning after running their car heaters for long periods of time, said rescue services physician Abdur Rehman. As of late Saturday, the death toll included 10 men, 10 children and two women, Rehman said. In one instance, a husband and wife and their two children all died in their car. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas arrived Sunday in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.According to the Palestinian Authority’s envoy to Cairo, Diab al-Louh, Abbas will stay in the city for the next two days.“Abbas’s meeting with Sissi will address the latest developments on the Palestinian arena, efforts to advance the peace process, and efforts to end the Israeli occupation,” al-Louh said.Abbas is accompanied by his two top aides, Hussein al-Sheikh — who is responsible for ties with Israel — and Palestinian Authority intelligence chief Majed Faraj, as well as advisers Mahmoud al-Habbash and Majdi Khaldi.The PA’s official news agency WAFA said Abbas arrived for an official visit to participate in the opening of the World Youth Forum.According to al-Louh, Abbas and Sissi will also discuss “Egypt’s efforts to achieve [Palestinian] national reconciliation, end division, and rebuild what was destroyed by the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip.”The latter part is a reference to an escalation last May that saw 11 days of violence in which thousands of rockets were launched by Gazan terror group Hamas toward Israeli cities, that were met with retaliatory Israeli airstrikes that heavily damaged parts of the Gaza Strip.Egypt has since been mediating efforts to achieve a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas that would likely see Jerusalem and Cairo somewhat ease their blockade on Gaza and help rebuild the Strip in exchange for long-term quiet or other concessions.
