Waukesha attack: Darrell Brooks identified as suspect after five killed at Christmas parade-Darrell Brooks, 39, will be charged with five counts of intentional homicide, police say-Bevan Hurley-The suspect who is accused of plowing into a Christmas parade in Waukesha had been released on bail just a few days before the deadly attack on charges of driving over an ex-partner.Darrell Edward Brooks, 39, was taken into custody on Sunday night shortly after a red Ford Escape SUV drove into a the parade in the Wisconsin city, killing five and injuring 48 people, including 18 children aged 3 to 16.Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson said Mr Brooks would be charged with five counts of intentional first-degree homicide, and further charges were likely.Mr Thompson said police were called to a domestic disturbance involving Mr Brooks just before the tragedy occurred, but he had left the scene in his SUV before they arrived. He drove towards the parade route before smashing through a police barricade and colliding with marchers at high speed on Waukesha’s Main St at 4.39pm local time.According to criminal record searches, Mr Brooks was a longtime felon whose offending dated back to 1999. He has convictions for drug and firearm possession, strangulation, battery and resisting arrest, has been sentenced to two prison terms, and spent years on probation and under court supervision. On 2 November, Mr Brooks was arrested on domestic violence charges after he allegedly tried to run over the mother of his child. He was charged with recklessly endangering safety, felony bail jumping, battery, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm released a statement on Monday morning to say the bail recommendation was “inappropriately low” in light of his criminal record and the active charges against him.He said the bail recommendations were “not consistent” with his office’s approach on defendant’s facing violent crime charges and he would be undertaking an internal review of the decision.Mr Brooks was also facing active charges of recklessly endangering safety and possesion of a firearm as a felon in July 2020.In that case bail was initially set at $10,000 before being reduced to $7,500. Mr Brooks remained in custody until 9 February 2021, when he was released on $500 bail after the trial was delayed.Darrell Edward Brooks' mugshot from a sexual offense conviction in Nevada in 2006-He is also listed as a tier two sexual offender on Nevada’s sex offender register for a 1996 conviction for statutory sexual seduction.Mr Brooks was an amateur rapper who released several videos to YouTube under the stage name MathBoi Fly.In a song named Half a Tikket, which was taken down by YouTube, Mr Brooks’ SUV appears onscreen behind him.His songs frequently reference extreme violence and show automatic weapons, and he has threatened former presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama in his lyrics. In since-deleted social media accounts, Mr Brooks described himself as an “underground hip-hop recording artist”.

Police: 'Some' killed when SUV hits Christmas parade-By SCOTT BAUER and MIKE HOUSEHOLDER Associated Press Nov 21, 2021 Updated 17 min ago -By SCOTT BAUER and MIKE HOUSEHOLDER Associated Press

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — An SUV driver sped through a police line and into a parade of Christmas marchers on Sunday, hitting more than 20 adults and children in a horrifying scene captured by the city’s livestream and the cellphones of onlookers.Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said “some” people had been killed but would not give an exact number. A person was in custody, he said, but he did not give any indication of motive. One video shows a woman screaming, “Oh my God!” repeatedly after a group of girls wearing Santa hats and dancing with white pompoms is struck. Another shows the SUV plowing into members of a marching band, their music replaced with terrified screams.Fire Chief Steven Howard said 11 adults and 12 children were injured and transported to hospitals by his department. It was unknown how many people were taken to hospitals by others. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin said it received 15 patients from the parade and no reported fatalities as of 8 p.m.Police also had custody of the vehicle, Thompson said. The investigation was ongoing, with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.“What took place in Waukesha today is sickening, and I have every confidence that those responsible will be brought to justice,” tweeted the state's top law enforcement officer, Attorney General Josh Kaul.As the SUV broke through barricades, a Waukesha police officer fired his gun in an attempt to stop the vehicle, Thompson said. No bystanders were injured and Thompson said he did not know if the driver was struck by the officer's bullets. One video shows the moment the SUV broke through the barricades and the sound of what appears to be several gunshots. The video taken when the pompom dancers got struck ends with a group of people tending to one of the girls who is on the ground.Corey Montiho, a Waukesha school district board member, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that his daughter’s dance team was hit by the SUV.“They were pompoms and shoes and spilled hot chocolate everywhere. I had to go from one crumpled body to the other to find my daughter,” he said. “My wife and two daughters were almost hit. Please pray for everybody. Please pray.”One entry in the parade, the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, posted on its Facebook page that “members of the group and volunteers were impacted and we are waiting for word on their conditions.” The group’s profile describes them as a “group of grannies that meet once a week to practice routines for summer and winter parades.”Chris Germain, co-owner of the Aspire Dance Center studio, had about 70 girls in the parade ranging from as young as 2 being pulled in wagons to age 18. Germain, whose own 3-year-old daughter was in the parade, said he was driving at the head of their entry when he saw a maroon SUV that “just blazed right past us.” A police officer came by on foot chasing after, he said. Germain said he jumped out of his own SUV and gathered the girls who were with him.“There were small children laying all over the road, there were police officers and EMTs doing CPR on multiple members of the parade," he said.Angelito Tenorio, a West Allis alderman who is running for Wisconsin state treasurer, said he was watching the parade with his family when they saw the SUV come speeding into the area.“Then we heard a loud bang,” Tenorio said. “And after that, we just heard deafening cries and screams from the crowd, from the people at the parade. And people started rushing, running away with tears in their eyes crying.”The Waukesha school district canceled classes Monday and said in a notice on its website that extra counselors would be on hand for students and staff. The parade’s list of entries included cheer, dance and band entries associated with district schools.Gov. Tony Evers said he and his wife, Kathy, were “praying for Waukesha tonight and all the kids, families, and community members affected by this senseless act.”Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow, who was at the parade but left just before the incident, called it “an unspeakable tragedy, affecting us all as we work to overcome an extremely challenging two years and resume our cherished holiday traditions.”The parade is sponsored by the city’s Chamber of Commerce. This year’s edition was the 59th of the event that’s held each year the Sunday before Thanksgiving.Waukesha is a western suburb of Milwaukee, and about 55 miles north of Kenosha, where Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted Friday of charges stemming from the shooting of three men during unrest in that city in August 2020.——— Bauer reported from Madison, Wis. USA TODAY-At least 5 dead, over 40 injured after SUV slammed into Wisconsin Christmas parade; 'person of interest' in custody-Christopher Kuhagen, Mary Spicuzza, Molly Beck and Celina Tebor, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel-Mon., November 22, 2021, 7:58 a.m

MILWAUKEE — At least 5 people were dead and over 40 people were injured after an SUV sped through a barricade and into a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee Sunday, officials confirmed.Waukesha authorities confirmed the deaths in a statement late Sunday. Police said the numbers could change as many people took themselves to hospitals. The city of Waukesha posted to its Twitter and Facebook accounts revised casualty totals. "At this time, we can confirm that 5 people are deceased and over 40 are injured," the statement said. "However, these numbers may change as we collect additional information."Earlier, authorities said 11 adults and 12 children were ferried to local hospitals. Others were taken by friends and family. Children's Wisconsin hospital said it had 15 patients and no fatalities.Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said the investigation was ongoing, but that a “suspect vehicle” was recovered and that there is a person of interest in custody at the moment. Some of the injured were taken by police to hospitals, and others were taken by family members, Thompson said, describing the incident as "very tragic" and "very chaotic." He declined to give the exact number of deceased individuals, citing the need to notify next of kin first. The incident occurred during one of the city's biggest and most cherished annual events as the red SUV barreled down the street, plowing into parade participants.Videos posted to social media, including a live feed of the parade operated by the City of Waukesha, show a red SUV breaking through barriers and speeding into the roadway where the parade was taking place.A police officer fired gunshots at the SUV in an attempt to stop it, Thompson said, and no bystanders were injured by the gunfire. He said police don't believe any shots were fired from the SUV.In the city’s footage, taken from a distance, the SUV speeds into the parade just behind a school marching band. A reporter at the scene said that a red SUV came barreling down the street, and the crowd could hear the thuds as it struck people, leaving many on the ground.Corey Montiho, a Waukesha school district board member, said his daughter's dance team was hit by the SUV."They were pom-poms and shoes and spilled hot chocolate everywhere. I had to go from one crumpled body to the other to find my daughter," he said. "My wife and two daughters were almost hit. Please pray for everybody. Please pray.""My family is safe but many are not. I held one little girl's head in my hand, she was seizing and she was bleeding out of her ears. I held her mother as she collapsed. Please pray.”The Waukesha School District announced on Facebook that all public schools will be canceled on Monday.Thompson said it's unknown if the incident is connected to terrorism.

TheGrio-Riot declared in downtown Portland following Rittenhouse verdict-Jaelen Ogadhoh-Sun, November 21, 2021, 8:22 PM

Deputies reported being pelted with projectiles during a demonstration-declared-riot in response to Kyle Rittenhouse’s controversial acquittal.Protesters and police clashed in Portland, Oregon following the not-guilty verdict for Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, prompting the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) to declare a riot Friday evening.According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), reports of crowds blocking traffic near the Justice Center on SW 2nd Ave. came in around 7 p.m., with one passerby claiming his vehicle’s window was broken by one of the demonstrators.MCSO authorities said a crowd of a “couple dozen” demonstrators then gathered in front of a vehicle entryway at the Justice Center with some members allegedly heard chanting “burn it down,” per the official press release.Portland police have declared a riot tonight after demonstrators gathered downtown to protest the verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial pic.twitter.com/7OBjgFvkbo — Zane Sparling (@PDXzane) November 20, 2021-The gate reportedly opened after protesters were seen tampering with it. Authorities then said between 10 and 20 members of the crowd proceeded to enter the ramp, making their way toward the building’s jail entrance as crowd members propped the gate open with “large tree branches.”Deputies reported being pelted with “urine, alcoholic beverages, water bottles and batteries” hurled by demonstrators as law enforcement was “instructing them to exit.”“Because a large group of people were engaging in tumultuous and violent conduct, and further entry into the building would have posed significant implications and grave risk of causing public alarm, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) declared a riot,” authorities wrote. The MCSO directed PPB to communicate the declaration to protesters via its Sound Truck, a vehicle equipped with a loudspeaker used to give warnings of force “several times” according to police reports.PPB reportedly arrested one individual, 27-year-old Elly Starling, for a warrant, with Portland officers additionally issuing five citations and 17 warnings to protesters. The MCSO reported no arrests during or in relation to Friday’s events.Rittenhouse, an Illinois teenager, fatally shot two people during an August 2020 Jacob Blake protest in Kenosha, Wis. The protests started after Blake, an unarmed Black man, was shot in the back by a Kenosha, Wis. police officer. Blake is now paralyzed from the waist down. Rittenhouse was charged with homicide, attempted homicide, and reckless endangering of safety.18-year-old Rittenhouse was acquitted of all charges Friday after pleading self-defense in the deadly shooting that became a flashpoint in the nation’s debate over guns, vigilantism, and racial injustice.“Some people may be hurting hearing this verdict today. Please take care of each other in this difficult moment,” tweeted Gov. Kate Brown, among many area leaders who responded to the acquittal. “We have a lot of work to do as a country in building a more just and equitable future.”“We have an injustice system in America,” wrote Portland Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty.Yesterday was a very difficult day and another example of the two justice systems we have in America based on the color of one’s skin,” Hardesty tweeted in response to Friday’s events. “I’m a child of the civil rights movement and dedicated to the practice of non-violence.” And this frame doesn’t have my finger. This is not advocacy to advance reforms. These actions do not reflect our values as a city.”“People have a right to be upset, and the right to protest,” she added. “Just as protestors have a right to film the police or anything occurring in public, the press has the right to film what’s occurring in public.”Local Portland station KATU reported a confrontation after a group of protesters approached a recording crew and demanded they stop filming. After crew members for the TV station refused, the group of demonstrators reportedly attacked a camera operator and were confronted by security guards.“I’m still learning the full details of what occurred last night but want to make it clear that attacking or intimidating the press is never acceptable, such as what happened to a @KATUNews crew last night,” Hardesty tweeted in response.theGrio’s Ny Magee contributed to this report.

Associated Press-Attorney accuses Arbery advocates of `lynching' defendants-Fri, November 19, 2021, 1:26 PM

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The defense attorney who caused an outcry by saying Black pastors should be barred from the murder trial over Ahmaud Arbery's death declared in court Friday that a courthouse rally and other actions supporting the slain Black man's family were comparable to a “public lynching” of the three white defendants.“This case has been infected by things that have nothing to do with the guilt or innocence of these defendants,” attorney Kevin Gough told the judge, arguing that civil rights activists are trying to influence the disproportionately white jury.Gough renewed a request for a mistrial the day after the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Martin Luther King III joined hundreds of pastors, most of them Black, praying and rallying at the steps of the Glynn County courthouse. The event was organized after Gough last week objected to Sharpton sitting in the back row of the courtroom with Arbery’s parents.“Third parties are influencing this case," Gough said. "They’ve been doing it from the gallery in this courtroom. They’ve been doing it outside. This is what a public lynching looks like in the 21st century.”He told the judge his client's right to a fair trial was being violated by a “left woke mob.”Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley dismissed the mistrial motion with little discussion.“I don’t recall any disruption in the courtroom itself,” the judge said of Thursday's rally, which coincided with defense testimony.Gough is the lead attorney for William “Roddie” Bryan, who joined father and son Greg and Travis McMichael in pursuing Arbery in pickup trucks after spotting the 25-year-old man running in their coastal Georgia neighborhood on Feb. 23, 2020. Bryan took cellphone video of Travis McMichael shooting Arbery as he threw punches and grabbed for the shotgun.Arbery’s killing later became part of the broader reckoning on racial injustice in the criminal legal system after a string of fatal encounters between Black people and police.Gough has repeatedly raised concerns about outside activists seeking to influence the case. He made the lynching remark after prosecutor Linda Dunikoski accused Gough of intentionally provoking outrage among Black pastors and civil rights activists.“They are responding to what he strategically, knowingly, intelligently did so that there would be a response so that he could then complain of it,” Dunikoski said. “That is good lawyering right there. Because now he’s motioned for a mistrial based on something that he caused.”Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, called Gough’s latest comments “ridiculous.”“He’s done things repeatedly that just surprise me that he would say,” she told reporters outside the courthouse. “Very surprising, but not unexpected I would say.”With closing arguments set for Monday, prosecutors and defense attorneys spent Friday debating nuances of the legal instructions the judge plans to give to the jury before deliberations.Much of the debate dealt with how the judge will describe the limitations on making a citizen’s arrest. Defense attorneys say Georgia law authorized the McMichaels and Bryan to detain Arbery for police because they had valid reason to suspect he was a burglar. Prosecutors say there’s no evidence that Arbery had committed any crimes in the neighborhood.Defense attorneys objected when the judge said he would instruct the jury that “a private citizen’s warrantless arrest must occur immediately after the perpetration of the offense, or in the case of a felony during escape.”Robert Rubin, an attorney for Travis McMichael, said the proposed language would make it virtually impossible for a jury to find the defendants had probable cause to detain Arbery based on suspicion he’d committed prior burglaries in same home under construction he was seen running from before his death.“We have built this whole case around the probable cause ... that Travis McMichael and Greg McMichael had on Feb. 23 for events that happened previously,” Rubin said. “And you are gutting all of it.”Travis McMichael testified this week that he had seen security camera videos of Arbery inside the unfinished home and that he spotted Arbery “creeping” outside of it 12 days before the shooting. None of the five videos of Arbery inside the home showed him stealing. The owner said he installed cameras after items were taken from a boat he kept in an open garage.Walmsley said he would consider changes if attorneys could support them citing other cases.—- This version updates with fuller “lynching” quote and clarifies that Gough's comment was about the pastors' rally as well as other actions.

Saleh al-Arouri, Zacharia Najib said to lead cell-Shin Bet: Forces thwart major Hamas terror plans, nab more than 50 cell members-West Bank cell aimed to carry out some bombings imminently; suicide attacks planned; ringleader was offered $1m. for kidnapping; arrests come day after Old City killing of Eli Kay-By Judah Ari Gross-NOV 22,21-Today, 4:48 pm

Israeli security forces arrested dozens of members of a Hamas cell that was in the advanced stages of planning major terror attacks in the West Bank and Israel, the Shin Bet security service said Monday. The effort to uncover the cell has been ongoing for several months, first coming to light with a round of arrest raids in September, including one in which two Israeli soldiers were seriously injured and several Palestinian suspects were killed in gunfights.According to the Shin Bet, over 50 Hamas operatives were arrested across the West Bank for suspected involvement in the cell and large quantities of weaponry was seized, including the materials needed to make at least four explosive belts for suicide attacks. An undisclosed amount of money that was allegedly used by the cell was also seized in the raids, according to the Shin Bet.“You thwarted a large infrastructure, some of which you know was ready to go with explosive belts… grenades and other explosives,” IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi told the military commanders whose units took part in the raids. The Shin Bet’s announcement about the discovery of the Hamas cell came a day after a member of the terror group in Jerusalem carried out a shooting attack in the Old City, killing one man, Eli Kay, and injuring four people.Israeli officials generally believe that Hamas is looking to carry out attacks in the West Bank and in Israel while maintaining relative calm in the Gaza Strip, where the group serves as the de facto ruler.According to the Shin Bet, the Hamas cell was led from afar by Saleh al-Arouri, deputy head of the terror group’s politburo, and Zacharia Najib, a member of the organization who was released from Israeli prison in the 2011 Gilad Shalit exchange and exiled to Turkey, where he allegedly continues to operate on behalf of Hamas. In the 2011 deal, over 1,000 Palestinian terrorists were released from Israeli incarceration in exchange for the release of Shalit, an IDF soldier who had been kidnapped by Hamas along the Gaza border in 2006.Najib, who took part in the kidnapping and killing of Israeli soldier Nachshon Wachsman in 1994, was allegedly involved in a failed Hamas plot to assassinate Israelis abroad in 2019.The Shin Bet said al-Arouri invested hundreds of thousands of shekels in the cell’s activities and offered a prize of $1 million if the cell successfully carried out a kidnapping.“This was a major preventative effort that thwarted dangerous terrorist infrastructure, which was planning serious attacks. The goal of the terrorist activities, which were undertaken by Hamas operatives abroad and in Gaza with operatives in the West Bank, was to destabilize the region, while exacting a heavy price from local residents,” a senior Shin Bet officer said, referring to the toll on Palestinians in the West Bank.According to the Shin Bet, the cell was planning “to carry out terror attacks in a number of formats in the West Bank and Jerusalem, as well as the possibility of carrying out bombings in Israel.”Al-Arouri and Najib, who both live abroad, recruited a number of top operatives from Palestinian cities and towns across the West Bank, notably Jenin, Ramallah, and Hebron, who in turn found additional members, according to the Shin Bet.The Israeli security service identified one of those lieutenants as Hijazi Qawasmeh, a 37-year-old Hebron native, who has been arrested several times by Israel for allegedly planning terror attacks for Hamas, most recently in September. An undated photograph showing Israeli forces raiding a home as part of an effort to break up a major Hamas cell planning terror attacks on Israeli targets in the West Bank and Jerusalem. (Israel Defense Forces)“Hijazi recruited operatives in the West Bank, including Hamzah Zahran, a 40-year-old Hamas operative from the village of Bidu, near Ramallah,” the Shin Bet said.According to the Shin Bet, Zahran, who has also been arrested multiple times for Hamas activities, went on to recruit several other operatives, including his family members. One of his brothers, Ahmad Zahran, was killed in a firefight with Israeli troops during one of the raids in Bidu in September. Two other Hamas members — Mahmoud Hameedan and Zakria Badwan — were killed in the same exchange.“They worked using the money they received from abroad to obtain weapons and to create explosives, which were seized as part of the efforts to thwart this infrastructure,” the Shin Bet said.According to the IDF, large amounts of explosives were found and later destroyed in a series of controlled blasts. The Shin Bet identified two of the main bomb makers that were used by the cell: Muhammad Abu al-Hassan, from the village of Burqin near Jenin, and Ghani Hadour, from Bayt Sira near Ramallah. The Israeli security services warned that Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip and abroad were “constantly funneling funding toward various terrorist activities” in the West Bank.In a tacit threat, the Shin Bet identified “one of the noteworthy people involved” as Musa Dudin, a senior Hamas member whom the security service alleged led an operation to send large sums of money to Hamas in the West Bank through couriers.

Babies emit smell to get aggressively loyal moms and mellow dads, Israeli study says-Scientists astounded that chemical on newborns’ heads has opposite effect on men and women, but say it’s logical because kids are safest with protective mother, unaggressive father-By Nathan Jeffay-NOV 22,21-Today, 11:46 am

The smell of a newborn boosts their chances of survival by making moms more aggressive and dad less aggressive, Israeli scientists have suggested in peer-reviewed research. They were astounded to find that inhaling hexadecanal, a chemical that is sometimes emitted from the human skin, especially on the heads of newborns, has an entirely different effect on men and women. The scientists say their experiment, newly published in Science Advances, is among the first to provide a direct link between human behavior and a single molecule picked up through the sense of smell.A team from the Weizmann Institute of Science got volunteers to sniff oil, some of it with hexadecanal and some without. Hexadecanal is odorless, but the men who sniffed it became less aggressive than others who didn’t — while the women who sniffed it became more aggressive.“We were really surprised,” Dr. Eva Mishor, lead author of the study, told The Times of Israel. “Our hypothesis was that it was a social cue that reduced aggression, but we didn’t expect it to cause a different reaction in men and women.“However, once we started to observe and understand it, there was logic,” Mishor said.“The effect seems to make sense in childrearing, because in the animal kingdom male aggression is often directed against the infant, which endangers the offspring, while female aggression is directed against others as the mother tries to protect the infant.“Male aggression translates many times into aggression toward newborns; infanticide is a very real phenomenon in the animal kingdom. Meanwhile, female aggression usually translates into defending offspring. So this smell mechanism we studied may actually be a means for an infant, who has limited communication, to increase survival by getting the effect they need from both parents.”Dr. Eva Mishor (left) and Prof. Noam Sobel (courtesy of the Weizmann Institute of Science)-The main experiment for the study involved getting participants to play a game, believing they were competing against another person while the opponent was really a computer. The opponent behaved unfairly and the participants were told to respond by generating sounds at the touch of a button, some of which were loud enough to hurt the ears of a human on the receiving end.Women who sniffed hexadecanal blasted the noise louder than other women, while men who had smelled the chemical generated gentler sounds. The scientists also ran brain scans on some volunteers, and found that while men and women perceive hexadecanal as odorless, their neurological reaction to it was very different. They actually identified specific brain regions that responded very differently. The research took place in the lab of Prof. Noam Sobel, a neuroscientist who researches the function of smell in human interactions, and famously concluded in 2015 that the handshake may have originated as a socially acceptable way of checking out each other’s odors.“Like all mammals, humans sniff themselves and each other all the time,” Sobel said, commenting on the new research, which he co-authored with Mishor. “Now, perhaps we know the outcome of sniffing newborns and have a better understanding of the mechanisms involved, and of its possible evolutionary role.”Results from the Weizmann experiment, which shows that women responded more aggressively when given the chance to ‘blast’ noise at opponents in a game after smelling hexadecanal, while men responded less aggressively (Weizmann Institute of Science)
