The FBI says it infiltrated a militia-style group's 'Bible study' after tracking a suspect in the Capitol riot-Sarah Al-Arshani Jul 7, 2021, 17:58 IST
The FBI says it infiltrated a militia-style group's 'Bible study' after tracking a suspect in the Capitol riot-Insider-Prosecutors say Fi Duong, 27, stormed the capitol on January 6 wearing a "Japanese-style mask." Courtesy of United States District Court of the District of ColumbiaA man charged with storming the Capitol on January 6 is also said to have participated in a self-styled militia that referred to its meetings as "Bible study" and discussed surveilling the Capitol complex after the attack.Fi Duong, 27, was released to home confinement on Friday after facing multiple charges, including disorderly conduct and obstruction of an official proceeding tied to the riot.In a complaint made public Tuesday, the FBI says an undercover police officer encountered Duong at the Capitol on the day when supporters of President Donald Trump breached the building and clashed with law enforcement. He described himself to the officer as an "operator," the complaint said, adding that evidence showed he was later spotted inside the building wearing a "Japanese-style mask."The complaint said roughly a week later the undercover police officer connected Duong to an undercover FBI employee, who embedded himself with Duong's group.Speaking with the FBI contact, Duong said that he was part of a militia-like "cloak and dagger" group that "can't be out in the open" and that his job was to find like-minded men to prepare for a "worst-case scenario" for Virginia, the complaint said. The complaint said that Duong sent a message to the undercover FBI contact indicating one of "our guys" was "patrolling" outside the Capitol and that another group member later sent a message saying he took footage of the west and east sides of the Capitol and would upload it to an encrypted site.On February 12, the FBI employee attended a meeting at Duoung's house, described as a "Bible study." The group, however, discussed only two Bible verses, the complaint said, with the rest of the meeting spent planning other meetings and talking about firearms and future training. The complaint did not show any charges stemming from violence on January 6 but said Duong "repeatedly expressed his willingness to engage in conflict, including violence, against groups that shared different views than his own."The documents also said he mused about freeing Capitol rioters from prison."I see that as an opportunity," the complaint quoted him as saying. ".With every great revolution, you go to the prisons and you break them out."So far, 545 people have been charged in the Capitol insurrection.
Herzog expected to speak of rifts, polarization in society-Herzog to take office as Israel’s 11th president in a day of pomp and ceremony-New president to be sworn in on same Bible as father; Rivlin on Israelis in letter to successor: ‘You’ll want to hug all of them. You’ll want to cry with them and laugh with them’-By TOI staff-jul 7,21-Today, 6:43 amUpdated at 8:52 am
Isaac Herzog will take office on Wednesday as Israel’s 11th president after a day of ceremonies with outgoing President Reuven Rivlin. The day will start with the official unveiling of a bust of Rivlin in the statue garden of the president’s official residence. The sculpture was erected Monday alongside those of Rivlin’s predecessors, two days before he completed his seven-year term.On a plaque beneath the bust is a quote from Rivlin: “Without the ability to listen, there is no ability to learn. Without the ability to learn, there is no ability to repair.”During his term in office, Rivlin consistently scored high public approval ratings, with his determination to represent the broad spectrum of Israeli communities and his obvious compassion resonating with the public. In the afternoon, Herzog will take his oath of office in the Knesset. He will be sworn in on a 107-year-old Bible that has a long history in his family — the same one that his father Chaim Herzog used when he was sworn in as president in 1983. The Bible survived both world wars and was given to his grandmother by her father on the eve of her wedding. The new president will then address the Knesset plenum. In his speech, Herzog is expected to speak of the rifts and polarization in Israeli society, the ways to repair the divides, and the tools needed to preserve Israel’s democracy, the Ynet news site reported Wednesday.Following a toast to the president at the Knesset, Herzog will head over to the President’s Residence where there will be a handover ceremony with Rivlin.Waiting for Herzog on his desk in the president’s office will be a personal letter from Rivlin, addressed to “the president.”“The truth is I am a little envious of you. In a short time you will discover the tremendous privilege that has fallen to you,” Rivlin wrote in the missive.“In the coming seven years you will meet the men and women who are citizens of Israel. I am already telling you, you will want to hug them, all of them. You will want to cry with them, and to laugh with them. To be excited with them,” Rivlin wrote.Echoing themes he expressed in a 2015 speech warning against the deterioration of unity in Israeli society, Rivlin wrote: “Among the tribes, in the shadow of the controversies and rifts, you will find brave people who do not talk about the ‘together’, they just live it. Day to day and hour by hour. In their homes, those on the right and the left, Jews and Arabs, veteran [citizens] and new immigrants, religious and traditional, young and old. People of all faiths, sectors and ethnicities. All of them, Israelis. Beautiful, enlightening, and generous. And what a heart they have, beyond words.”Rivlin warned his successor of the emotional toll too, recalling how his sleep was sometimes disturbed by thoughts of those he met who were facing challenges in one form or another.“You will be surprised. Fall in love. Be proud. Take things to heart,” Rivlin wrote.“Many times, on journeys, in meetings, I thought to myself the title ‘Citizen Number One’ was born simply because this is the number one people. Today I am sure,” Rivlin concluded.Herzog, a former Jewish Agency chairman and Labor party leader, won more votes in the Knesset in the election in early June than any presidential candidate in the country’s history.Ahead of the ceremony, Herzog prayed at the Western Wall on Tuesday and in the note he left in the cracks of the wall, he wrote that he will devote himself to “unity among our people and true love for Israel.”As the 11th president of Israel, he said, he will “do everything to make a significant contribution to our unity, a significant contribution to calming our spirits and strengthening the lofty vision of loving each other.”Herzog was elected on June 2 by 87 of the Knesset’s 120 members as 11th president of Israel, a largely ceremonial post. Miriam Peretz, a social activist and Israel Prize-winning educator who lost two soldier sons in Israel’s wars, was backed by 26 lawmakers in the secret ballot.Rivlin immediately phoned his successor to congratulate him on his win.“I send you my warmest greetings, Mr. President!” Rivlin was quoted saying in a statement. “The title of ‘first citizen’ and the task of guarding the character of the State of Israel, particularly at this point in time, are heavy responsibilities. I have no doubt that you will bear them superbly. I am proud to pass on the baton to you.”A moving truck outside the president’s official residence in Jerusalem on July 7, 2021, as current President Reuven Rivlin is set to be replaced by Isaac Herzog (Sraya Diamant/FLASH90)Herzog, who was opposition leader and former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s chief opponent in the 2015 general elections, said he hoped “to be able to work with any government and every prime minister.”Israel’s president is largely ceremonial but plays a key role in deciding who gets the mandate to form a government following elections. The president also has the power to pardon people and grant clemency. In the run-up to the vote, Herzog refused to say whether he would consider pardoning Netanyahu, who is on trial in three corruption cases. An attorney by profession at one of the country’s top firms (which was founded by his father), Herzog has a family history that is as close as one comes to Israeli royalty. He is the grandson of Israel’s first Ashkenazi chief rabbi, Isaac Herzog, for whom he is named, and the son of former IDF major general and then president Chaim Herzog. His brother Michael is a retired IDF brigadier general. His aunt Suzy was the wife of former foreign minister Abba Eban.
Russia says Afghan situation can swiftly worsen, pledges help if needed-Wed, July 7, 2021, 3:26 AM
MOSCOW, July 7 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that the situation in Afghanistan had a tendency to swiftly deteriorate and said Moscow was ready to defend its regional allies if necessary.Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday told Emomali Rakhmon, the president of Tajikistan, that Moscow would help the impoverished former Soviet republic contend with the fallout from NATO's exit from neighbouring Afghanistan if needed.Rakhmon has ordered the mobilisation of 20,000 military reservists to bolster his country's border with Afghanistan after more than 1,000 Afghan security personnel fled across the frontier in response to Taliban militant advances.Lavrov, speaking on Wednesday during a visit to Laos, said Russia was ready to use its military base in Tajikistan, one of its biggest abroad, to ensure the security of its allies in the region, part of the former Soviet Union and an area where Moscow tries to retain influence."We are closely watching what is happening in Afghanistan where the situation has a tendency to swiftly deteriorate including against the backdrop of the hasty exit of American and other NATO troops," said Lavrov."They were unable to achieve visible results when it comes to stabilising the situation during the decades they spent there," he said.Lavrov added that military obligations that Russia had undertaken in the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), a post-Soviet security bloc it leads and whose other members include Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, remained in full force.CSTO representatives had visited the Tajik-Afghan border, most of which Russian officials say is reportedly under Taliban control from the Afghan side, in order to assess the situation and report back, Lavrov said."We will do everything we can, including using the capabilities of the Russian military base on Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan, to prevent any aggressive impulses towards our allies," Lavrov said. Associated Press-8 more dead pulled from rubble of collapsed Florida -TERRY SPENCER-Wed, July 7, 2021, 1:25 AM
SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — The search for victims of the collapse of a Miami-area high-rise condominium reached its 14th day on Wednesday, with the death toll at three dozen, more than 100 people still unaccounted for and authorities sounding more and more grim.Crews on Tuesday dug through pulverized concrete where the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside once stood, filling buckets that were passed down a line to be emptied and then returned. The up-close look at the search, compliments of video released by the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Department, came as eight more deaths were announced — the most for a single day since the search began. It also came as rain and wind from now Hurricane Elsa disrupted the effort, though the storm was on track to make landfall far across the state.Searchers have found no new signs of survivors, and although authorities said their mission was still geared toward finding people alive, they sounded increasingly somb“Right now, we’re in search and rescue mode,” the county's police director, Freddy Ramirez, said at a news conference Tuesday evening. He soon added: “Our primary goal right now is to bring closure to the families.”No one has been rescued from the site since the first hours after the building collapsed on June 24 when many of its residents were asleep.Searchers were still looking for any open spaces within the mounds of rubble where additional survivors might be found, said the county's fire chief, Alan Cominsky.“Unfortunately, we are not seeing anything positive,” he said.Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the families of the missing were preparing for news of “tragic loss.” She said President Joe Biden, who visited the area last week, called Tuesday to offer his continued support.“I think everybody will be ready when it’s time to move to the next phase,” she said.Reporters got their closest in-person look at the site Tuesday, though it was limited to the portion of the building that workers tore down Sunday after the initial collapse left it standing but dangerously unstable. A pile of shattered concrete and twisted steel stood about 30 feet (9 meters) high and spanned roughly half the length of a football field. A pair of backhoes pulled rubble off the pile, which blocked any view of the search effort.Severe weather from Elsa hindered search efforts to a degree. Lightning forced rescuers to pause their work for two hours early Tuesday, Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah said. And winds of 20 mph (32 kph), with stronger gusts, hampered efforts to move heavy debris with cranes, officials said. However, the storm’s heaviest winds and rain would bypass Surfside and neighboring Miami as Elsa strengthened along its path to an expected landfall somewhere between Tampa Bay and Florida’s Big Bend.Crews have removed 124 tons (112 metric tonnes) of debris from the site, Cominsky said. The debris was being sorted and stored in a warehouse as potential evidence in the investigation into why the building collapsed, officials said.Workers have been freed to search a broader area since the unstable remaining portion of the building was demolished.

Iran says it has further enriched its uranium, drawing widespread condemnation-Caitlin McFall, Dana Karni-Tue, July 6, 2021, 7:10 PM
Iran has taken steps to enrich uranium metal to a 20 percent purity and manufacture nuclear reactor fuel, the United Nation’s top nuclear watchdog announced Tuesday. With the use of "indigenously-produced uranium" Iran will reportedly use fuel to supply the Tehran Research Reactor, but the U.S. and allied nations have called the move "worrying."US-IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL STALEMATE A ‘MISTRUST-AND-VERIFY SITUATION,’ FORMER CIA CHIEF SAYS-State Department spokesperson Ned Price said it was "another unfortunate step backwards" as the U.S. has engaged in indirect talks on nuclear nonproliferation with Iran since April.Price told reporters Tuesday that the move will not give Iran any leverage as the U.S. seeks to re-establish a nuclear agreement with the Middle Eastern nation, and said the "window for diplomacy remains open."Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) -- which Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of in 2018 -- Iran is not permitted to enrich uranium past a 3.67 percent purity threshold, which is all that is needed to power a commercial-grade power plant, according to the Arms Control Association. But International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi said Tuesday that Iran had breached the regulation."Today, Iran informed the Agency that UO2 [uranium dioxide] enriched up to 20 percent U–235 would be shipped to the R&D laboratory at the Fuel Fabrication Plant in Esfahan, where it would be converted to UF4 [Uranium tetrafluoride] and then to uranium metal-enriched to 20% U–235, before using it to manufacture the fuel," an IAEA spokesman said in a statement to Fox News.Uranium-235 can be used to fuel nuclear power plants and nuclear reactors that run naval ships, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But it can also be used for nuclear weapons – prompting concern from Western nations. In a unified statement condemning Iran’s plan, foreign ministers from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom called the move "concerning" and an "escalation of its nuclear violations."Iran has no credible civilian need for uranium metal R&D and production, which are a key step in the development of a nuclear weapon," the group said."We strongly urge Iran to halt all activities in violation of the JCPoA, without delay and to return to the negotiations in Vienna with a view to bringing them to a swift conclusion," the foreign ministers continued. "Iran is threatening a successful outcome to the Vienna talks despite the progress achieved in six rounds of negotiations to date."There are no set plans for direct talks between the U.S. and Iran.Price said the U.S. is not pushing Iran on a hard deadline when it comes to the negotiating table but said the administration is continuing to assess the situation.Professor Eyal Zisser of Tel-Aviv University and former head of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies told Fox News this announcement "is part of the Iranian game to put pressure on the United States and to get a better deal."Zisser explained that the Iranians can feel how much Washington wants the deal, so they are adding pressure and creating a crisis to get a better deal.Rich Edson contributed to this report.
Associated Press-European powers decry latest nuclear move by Iran-Tue, July 6, 2021, 3:58 PM
BERLIN (AP) — Germany, France and Britain are voicing “grave concern” over a further move by Iran that they say is a serious violation of its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, warning that it threatens the outcome of talks aimed at bringing the United States back into the agreement. The three European powers' foreign ministers issued a joint statement Tuesday over a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, that Iran intends to produce enriched uranium metal.Since then-President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the agreement in 2018, Iran has gradually been violating its restrictions to put pressures on the remaining parties — the three European nations, Russia and China — to come up with economic incentives to offset crippling American sanctions.Among other things, Tehran has started enriching uranium to well above the purity allowed under the agreement. It has also been spinning advanced centrifuges, producing uranium metal and stockpiling more uranium than allowed.Uranium metal can also be used for a nuclear bomb, and research on its production is specifically prohibited under the nuclear deal. The IAEA already said in February that its inspectors had confirmed that Iran has begun the production of uranium metal. The IAEA said Director-General Rafael Grossi informed the agency's board of governors that Iran now intends to use uranium enriched up to 20% in making fuel for its Tehran Research Reactor and that “in doing so, as part of a multi-stage process,” it will also produce uranium metal enriched up to 20%.Iran on Tuesday told the agency that the enriched uranium will be shipped to the research and development lab at its Isfahan fuel fabrication plant, where it will be converted to uranium tetrafluoride and then to enriched uranium metal before being used to manufacture fuel, the IAEA said. The European foreign ministers said of Tehran's latest step that “Iran has no credible civilian need for uranium metal (research and development) and production, which are a key step in the development of a nuclear weapon.”They said it was “all the more concerning” given that no date has been set for the resumption of negotiations in Vienna aimed at bringing the U.S. back into the nuclear deal and Iran back into full compliance, and that Iran has “significantly curtailed” IAEA access.“We have repeatedly stressed that time is on no-one’s side,” the statement said. “With its latest steps, Iran is threatening a successful outcome to the Vienna talks despite the progress achieved in six rounds of negotiations to date.”The 2015 accord is aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Tehran denies it is seeking such an arsenal.
Final countdown-Iran’s doomsday clock for Israel’s end halts amid power cuts-Public timer, which is set to mark destruction of Jewish state in 2040 as predicted by Khamenei, reportedly stops working amid rolling blackouts that are crippling Iranian life-By TOI staff and AP Today, 9:37 am
A clock in Iran that counts down to the destruction of Israel has reportedly ceased working as power cuts sweep through the nation.According to former Al-Monitor journalist Asaad Hanna in a tweet on Monday, the “countdown to Israel’s annihilation clock” stopped displaying following a power outage. The clock was unveiled in 2017, counting down to 2040, which is when Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei predicts there will no longer be a State of Israel. In recent days, the regular blackouts in Iran have spread chaos and confusion on the streets of the capital, Tehran, and other cities, knocking out traffic lights, shutting factories, disrupting telecommunications and affecting metro systems.Repeaters — devices around cities that enhance cellphone signals — have failed, along with electronic cash registers. Some towns in Iran’s north reported limited access to water because the power cuts affected the piped supply. Traffic police in the capital have said the sudden power cuts have caught officials completely by surprise.Iranian regime’s countdown to Israel’s annihilation clock has stopped working because of the power outages that have swept across Iran. pic.twitter.com/plWyIytqnl — Asaad Hanna (@AsaadHannaa) July 5, 2021-Iran’s outgoing president apologized Tuesday for the blackouts that have crippled businesses and darkened homes for hours a day.In a government meeting broadcast live on state TV, President Hassan Rouhani acknowledged that chronic power outages over the past week have caused Iranians “plenty of pain” and expressed contrition in an unusually personal speech.“My apologies to dear people who have faced these problems and pain,” he said.Officials have blamed the outages on the country’s stifling heat, escalating electricity demand and deepening drought that has threatened to snuff out hydroelectric generation.Power demand has peaked in recent days at 66,000 megawatts, surpassing the country’s practical generating capacity of 65,000 megawatts. Companies can actually provide people with even less electricity, closer to 55,000 megawatts — in large part because the aging, sanctions-hit electrical infrastructure leaves power plants prone to repeated technical failures.Former US president Donald Trump in 2018 pulled out a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, then reimposed tough sanctions on the Islamic Republic that have ravaged the Iranian economy. Talks in Vienna in recent months sponsored by European partners to the 2015 nuclear pact have been focused on getting the US to return to the deal and Iran to recommit to limitations on its nuclear program.Last month, Iran’s sole nuclear power plant underwent an unprecedented emergency shutdown. The facility in the southern port city of Bushehr returned online over the weekend after engineers said they repaired a broken generator.Electricity facilities have not been properly maintained, and a lack of spare parts has complicated the construction of new plants to keep up with the country’s runaway growth. Over the last two decades, modest apartment blocks and local markets have become high-rises, residential complexes and colossal shopping malls all humming with air-conditioners.While power cuts during the sweltering summer heat happen sporadically in Iran, the lack of recent rainfall has compounded the country’s electrical problems. Rouhani said precipitation had decreased by almost 50% in the last year, leaving dams with dwindling water supplies to fuel the country. Hydroelectric power generation has plummeted to 7,000 megawatts, Rouhani said, down from an estimated average of 12,000 megawatts in recent years.
Associated Press-China wants cross-border aid and sanctions relief for Syria-EDITH M. LEDERER-Tue, July 6, 2021, 6:57 PM
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — China said Tuesday it wants the U.N. Security Council to not only extend humanitarian aid deliveries to Syria from neighboring countries but to tackle the impact of Western sanctions and the need to expand deliveries across conflict lines. His comments came as the 15 council nations have just four days left before the mandate for cross-border aid expires.Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun told reporters after closed briefings to the council and a discussion among members on a draft resolution to continue cross-border deliveries that he hopes “with more diplomatic efforts we can find a solution” -- not just on cross-border aid.“For China, definitely we want to see a solution concerning unilateral sanctions, concerning cross-lines, concerning the transparency of the cross-border. Not just talking about cross-border but about the general situation in Syria,” Zhang said.In early July 2020, China and Russia vetoed a U.N. resolution that would have maintained two border crossing points from Turkey to deliver humanitarian aid to Syria’s mainly rebel-held northwest. Days later, under pressure from both countries, the council authorized the delivery of aid through just one of those crossings, Bab an-Hawa. The one-year mandate for using that crossing expires Saturday.U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield warned after Tuesday’s council meeting that Bab al-Hawa “is a lifeline to millions of people” in northwestern Syria’s Idlib region and if the crossing is closed, “I think the repercussions are obvious: people will starve to death.”Echoing U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, many Western diplomats and humanitarian groups working in Syria, Thomas-Greenfield said there is no substitute for delivering U.N. aid across borders from other countries rather than moving aid across conflict lines within Syria.“Cross-line aid alone cannot meet the needs of the Syrians -- needs that have only risen in the past year with COVID,” she said.“We have offered to support expanding cross-line aid, and we will continue to do so in good faith,” she said. “In fact, we have put forward a serious and credible proposal to expand humanitarian assistance across Syria -- including cross-line and cross-border, including urgent COVID relief -- to meet the urgent needs of the Syrian people.”Responding to a question about the comments from China’s ambassador and whether the U.S. is prepared to offer any concessions on sanctions, Thomas-Greenfield replied: “This is not a discussion about sanctions. It’s a question of humanitarian needs.”The ambassador, who visited Bab al-Hawa last month, said the U.S. sanctions target only Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, while U.S. humanitarian assistance is for all Syrians, in both government-controlled and rebel-held areas.During the debate over the cross-border resolution a year ago, Russia raised the issue of U.S. and European Union sanctions on its close ally Syria and their negative impact on Syria’s humanitarian situation. The U.S. and EU vehemently objected to the allegations, insisting their sanctions provide humanitarian exemptions. Two weeks ago, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Security Council that aid moving across conflict lines within Syria “is the only legitimate option for a humanitarian operation to deliver assistance.” He accused Western nations of wasting the past year that could have been used “to find a seamless and constructive solution and an optimal balance of Idlib’s procurement through both Bab al-Hawa and domestic channels.”Nebenzia also said U.S. and EU sanctions put “a heavy burden” on every Syrian, saying: “You blow the whistle regarding humanitarian access while pretending that the problem of Syria’s suffocation with sanctions does not exist.”Russia’s deputy U.N. ambassador, Dmitry Polyansky, told reporters after Tuesday’s meeting that Russia maintains “the same position as expressed previously.”The Security Council approved four border crossings when aid deliveries began in 2014, three years after the start of the Syrian conflict. But in January 2020, Russia used its veto threat in the council first to limit aid deliveries to two border crossings in the northwest, and then last July to cut to one.The council is now negotiating on a draft resolution proposed by Ireland and Norway that would maintain the Bab al-Hawa crossing and reopen the Al-Yaroubiya border crossing from Iraq to Syria’s mainly Kurdish-controlled northeast.Last week, Nebenzia called the proposal to reopen Al-Yaroubiya “a non-starter.”French Ambassador Nicolas De Riviere, the current council president, warned that if humanitarian aid deliveries are allowed only across conflict lines -- and not from neighboring countries -- Western nations that provide 92% of humanitarian relief will stop the funding.Robert S. Ford, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Middle East Institute, said in a briefing circulated Tuesday that “Moscow’s key consideration ahead of the vote is its relationship with Ankara.” He said the Turkish government, which supports the Syrian opposition, wants to avoid an enormous refugee rush from northwest Syria if the cross-border operation ends.Russia has been cooperating with Turkey in the so-called Astana process aimed at ending the fighting in Syria while it plays on “Turkish dissatisfaction with American policy to weaken NATO unity,” Ford said.“The Russians are considering the cost of an aid veto that would encourage the Turks to move farther and faster toward a rapprochement with the United States,” he said.Ford said Russia might accept an extension of cross-border aid deliveries “in return for reductions in Western sanctions,” clamping down on armed opposition groups in northwest Syria, and launching aid convoys from Damascus to Idlib.
Analysis-Egypt uses military to send firm message to newly conciliatory Turkey-Despite quiet talks between the two rivals, base opening and military exercises show Sissi not ready to accept Erdogan’s overtures-By Lazar Berman-JUL 07,21Today, 12:01 pm
Egypt sent a firm message to its regional rival Turkey this week, flexing its military might even as it engages in steps meant to calm tensions between the two Sunni powers.Egypt’s message was designed to address both major flashpoints between the two countries. Cairo fought a proxy war with Turkey in Libya in 2014-2020, and hosts a regional gas forum designed to counter Turkish moves in the eastern Mediterranean. For the better part of a decade, Turkey has been engaged in a bitter rivalry with Egypt that began when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan backed the Muslim Brotherhood after the group was ousted from power in Cairo when Sissi took over in 2013.Erdogan called Sissi a tyrant and submitted a formal request to the United Nations Security Council to have him recognized as a war criminal. Egypt expelled Turkey’s ambassador in Cairo and recalled its own from Ankara. The rivalry between the Sunni Muslim powers has metastasized into other areas and split the Middle East, with Turkey and Qatar leading a pro-Islamist faction, and Egypt siding with Saudi Arabia and the UAE in a pro-Western camp.In the Mediterranean, Egypt has aligned itself with Greece and Cyprus, which accuse Turkey of illegally drilling for natural gas in their exclusive economic zones. Together with Israel, the countries formed the EastMed Gas Forum, headquartered in Cairo, and they have conducted joint military exercises.Members of the self-proclaimed eastern Libyan National Army (LNA) special forces gather in the city of Benghazi, on their way to reportedly back up fellow LNA fighters on the frontline west of the city of Sirte, facing forces loyal to the UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), on June 18, 2020. (Photo by Abdullah DOMA / AFP)-On Saturday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi opened a strategic naval base on the Mediterranean Sea to “secure shipping lines,” according to the presidency. The base lies some 255 kilometers (160 miles) west of Alexandria, toward the border with Libya, a country in which both Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have played a key military role backing Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army. Turkey back the Government of National Accord, the opposing side in the 2014-2020 civil war.The ceremony, not coincidentally, was attended by the powerful crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.“It is the latest Egyptian military base on the Mediterranean, and will be focused on securing the country’s northern and western front,” Sissi said in a statement. The opening coincides with the eighth anniversary of Sissi leading the military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. The proxy war in Libya looked as if it could turn into a direct confrontation between the powers, when Sissi called the Libyan city of Sirte a “red line” and threatened direct military force if Turkish-backed forces attacked it.The civil war ended with a ceasefire in October 2020, and both Turkey and Egypt back the political process.Turkey and Egypt are also at odds over resource control in the eastern Mediterranean. Ankara has been aggressively asserting its maritime rights, enabled by its support for the GNA in Libya. In 2019, Turkey signed a maritime demarcation agreement with the government in Libya, claiming rights to waters Cyprus and Greece see as their own.In September 2020, Ankara upped the ante by sending a vessel, accompanied by warships, to survey for oil and gas in waters claimed by Greece. At one point, according to Reuters, Greek and Turkish warships collided. In response, Egypt and Greece signed a maritime border agreement that is rejected by Turkey. In 2020, the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum was formally launched, which includes rivals of Turkey like Israel, Greece, Cyprus and France. The EMGF, hosted in Cairo, is understood as an anti-Turkey alliance.Qader 2021-Egypt’s military exercise this week is designed to send a warning about Egypt’s readiness to defend its interests at sea.On Sunday, Egypt’s Defense Ministry released a video of the Qader 2021 exercise, taking place at the July 3 base. The video stressed that the base helps Egypt protect its natural resources in its territorial waters, a clear message to Erdogan. The message to Turkey is that Egypt has a capable, advanced military that will defend its waters and its vision of becoming a regional energy hub.The January 2020 Qader exercise took place a week after Erdogan announced his intention to send Turkish troops to Libya.Turkey needs friends-After a decade of assertive behavior and speech from Erdogan, global and regional shifts have pushed Ankara’s back against the wall. Isolated from Europe and many Arab states, it is facing an unfriendly White House and a US president who dislikes Erdogan personally, while its economy continues to get buffeted by the pandemic.Turkey’s tone and policies have changed in recent months, which includes overtures to Egypt. The two sides have held quiet intelligence and diplomatic talks, and Erdogan said in March that he hopes the reconciliation process with Egypt grows much stronger, and that Egypt and Turkey are natural allies. At the same time, Ankara asked Egyptian opposition television channels in Turkey to tone down their criticism of Sissi and the Egyptian government in a sign that it is eager for reconciliation.Turkey even stayed quiet in June when Egypt upheld the death penalty for 12 senior Muslim Brotherhood members for the 2013 killing of protesters.Egypt, on the other hand, has been more circumspect. Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry acknowledged the talks but stressed that progress depends on “real change in Turkish policy.”“Words are not enough, they must be matched by deeds,” he cautioned.Egypt is still not ready to accept Turkey’s overtures, and is instead countering with displays of military force.Israel, too, has been cold to Turkish attempts to rekindle ties. With new diplomatic and security relationships with Arab states, Israel likely won’t engage with Turkey until Ankara shuts down Hamas activity in the country, is transparent about its activities in East Jerusalem, and ends its harsh anti-Israel rhetoric.
In NIS 100m deal, navy buys four new patrol ships from Israeli firm-This is the first purchase of vessels from a domestic shipyard in 15 years; Shaldag-model ships to take part in operations along the coast-By Judah Ari Gross-jul 07,21-Today, 11:38 am
For the first time in 15 years, the Defense Ministry agreed to purchase four new ships for the Israeli Navy from a domestic shipyard on Wednesday in a NIS 100 million ($30.6 million) deal. The 32.5-meter (106.6-foot) Shaldag 5-class ships will take part in patrol operations along the Israeli coast and will be outfitted with a variety of offensive and defensive capabilities, the Defense Ministry said.A ministry spokesperson said the ships were due to be delivered in stages over the next four years. The deal, which was announced on Wednesday following months of deliberation by the navy, marked the first purchase of new naval vessels from a domestic firm — Israel Shipyards Ltd. — in some 15 years. The other ships purchased during this period were all made by foreign companies, most recently Germany’s Thyssenkrupp, which is building four large Sa’ar 6-class missile ships for the navy.“I applaud this agreement which has both security and societal importance. The Shaldag ships will allow the Israeli Navy to upgrade its capabilities, which are developing on the battlefield, as we saw clearly during Operation Guardian of the Walls,” Defense Minister Benny Gantz said Wednesday, referring to May’s 11-day Gaza conflict.“The purchase of Israeli-made ships demonstrates the strengthening of Israel’s defense industries,” he added. The 95-ton patrol ships have a top speed of 40 knots and will “give the navy the ability to respond to the threats developing on the naval front in the coming years,” the Defense Ministry said. The chairman of Israel Shipyards, Sami Katzav, hailed the deal, saying the purchase signified a vote of confidence in its abilities.“We are proud to serve the navy and the State of Israel’s Defense Ministry. This significant order represents a seal of approval for the quality and professionalism of the company as a provider of advanced naval vessels to countries and security forces around the world,” Katzav said.
Associated Press-Bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria attacked, 3 injured-Wed, July 7, 2021, 6:52 AM
BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S.-backed Syrian fighters and American troops foiled an attack with drones Wednesday on a base housing members of the U.S.-led coalition in eastern Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces said. In neighboring Iraq rockets hit a base housing U.S. troops, inflicting three minor injuries. The spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition Col. Wayne Marotto said that at around 12:30 p.m. Al-Assad Air Base in western Iraq was attacked by 14 rockets that landed on the base and perimeter. He said that Force Protection defensive measures were activated, adding that “at this time initial reports indicate 3 minor injuries. Damage is being assessed.”He did not say whether those injured were Americans. In Syria, the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led SDF said in a statement that drones were used in the attack on the al-Omar oil field in Syria's eastern province of Deir el-Zour. It added that the attack was foiled and more details will be released later in the day.Tension has been on the rise between U.S. troops and Iran-backed fighters after American airstrikes on eastern Syria killed six Iraqi fighters late last month in areas along the Syria-Iraq border.Wednesday's attack occurred at around 10:15 a.m. the SDF said adding that "early reports confirm that the attack was foiled and did not cause any damages.”Al-Omar base was attacked with two rockets over the weekend without inflicting any casualties, according to the SDF and Syrian opposition activist. The U.S. military denied there were any attacks on Sunday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the drones took off from areas controlled by Iran-backed fighters in the eastern Syrian town of Mayadeen. It added that the drones were shot down.Drone attacks against the U.S.-led coalition in Syria have been largely uncommon.Hundreds of U.S. troops are stationed in northeastern Syria, working with the SDF to fight against the Islamic State group.Thousands of Iran-backed militiamen from around the Middle East are deployed in different parts of Syria, many of them in areas along the border with Iraq. The leader of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia vowed on Monday to retaliate against America for the deaths of four of his men in a U.S. airstrike along the Iraq-Syria border last month. Abu Alaa al-Walae, commander of Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada said the attack will be a military operation everyone will talk about. The U.S. has blamed Iran-backed militias for attacks — most of them rocket strikes — that have targeted the American presence in Baghdad and military bases across Iraq. More recently, the attacks have become more sophisticated, with militants using drones.Late Tuesday, the counter-terrorism unit in Iraq’s northern Kurdish-run region reported a drone attack on Irbil airport, near where U.S. forces are based. The statement by the counter-terrorism unit said the attack caused no damage, though the missiles fell in open fields and set fires.
Associated Press-Iran accuses Israel of June attack on civilian nuclear site-In this photo released by the official website of the office of the Iranian Presidency, cabinet spokesman Ali Rabiei speaks at his weekly press briefing in Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Rabiei on Tuesday accused Israel of a sabotage attack in June that reportedly targeted a civilian nuclear facility near Tehran, the official IRNA news agency reported. (Iranian Presidency Office via AP)-ISABEL DEBRE and NASSER KARIMI-Tue, July 6, 2021, 5:56 AM
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran accused Israel on Tuesday of mounting a sabotage attack on a nuclear facility near Tehran last month, the country's state-run news agency reported as authorities acknowledged for the first time that the mysterious assault had caused structural damage to the site.Authorities announced in late June that they had prevented saboteurs from attacking a site located in Karaj, a city about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of the Iranian capital. They gave no details about what the targeted building belonging to the Iran’s Atomic Energy Agency contained, or how it was targeted. The sudden admission last month came just days after the election victory of the country's hard-line judiciary chief, Ebrahim Raisi, and followed a series of other attacks on Iran's nuclear program, including the killing of a top nuclear scientist. At the time, officials stressed that the attack had caused no casualties or damage. But Cabinet spokesman Ali Rabiei revised that account Tuesday, confessing to damage inflicted on the building's ceiling.“A hole appeared on ceiling of one of the industrial sheds, so the roof was removed for repairs,” Rabiei said, seeking to explain satellite images of the site widely circulated online that appeared to show the roof's abrupt removal following the reported attack. Rabiei acknowledged the images were taken when the roof was removed for restoration. “Damage to equipment was not remarkable," he added, without elaborating. The allegedly foiled attack last month came amid a flurry of diplomatic activity, as diplomats in Vienna struggle to resurrect Tehran's now-tattered 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which put curbs on its enrichment activities in return for relief from U.S. sanctions. Former President Donald Trump withdrew America from the landmark accord three years ago. That prompted Iran to gradually abandon the deal's limits on uranium enrichment, setting off a series of tense incidents in the Mideast. To exert pressure on the West for sanctions relief, Iran is now enriching uranium to 60%, its highest ever levels, although still short of weapons grade 90%. Rabiei on Tuesday accused Israeli saboteurs of seeking to derail the nuclear negotiations in Vienna, state-run IRNA news agency reported. “The Zionist regime carried out these actions to signal it can stop Iran and to say that there is no need to talk with Iran,” he said. “But whenever sabotage has happened, our strength has increased.” There was no immediate comment on the accusation from Israel, which has not claimed responsibility for any of the alleged attacks on Iran's nuclear program in recent months. Israel fiercely opposed the 2015 deal, which then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned as a “historic mistake.” In recent weeks, however, Israel's new government has struck a softer tone. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid told his American counterpart that Israel had “serious reservations” about the accord under discussion in Vienna but that the country would engage constructively and make its objections privately. Little is known about the reported assault in Karaj, located near various industrial sites, including pharmaceutical production facilities where Iran has manufactured its domestic coronavirus vaccine. Social media in Iran had crackled with unconfirmed reports that an unmanned aerial drone had targeted the facility. But the latest attack came at a sensitive time for Iran, in the midst of a political transition and on the precipice of a return to the historic nuclear deal. The country has, meanwhile, struggled to stem what it describes as an Israeli-led campaign against its nuclear program. Earlier this year, Iran’s underground Natanz nuclear facility experienced a mysterious blackout that damaged some of its centrifuges. Last July, unexplained fires struck the advanced centrifuge assembly plant at Natanz, which authorities later described as sabotage. Iran is now rebuilding that facility deep inside a nearby mountain. Iran also blamed Israel for the November killing of a scientist who began the country’s military nuclear program decades earlier.___Karimi reported from Tehran, Iran.

Miami Herald-Tropical Storm Elsa is moving along Florida coast. When and where will it make landfall? Michelle Marchante-Wed, July 7, 2021, 7:29 AM
Hurricane Elsa weakened into a tropical storm overnight and is forecast to make landfall in Florida Wednesday. The storm, which was moving north almost parallel with Florida’s west coast, is now approaching the northern Florida Gulf Coast, spreading heavy rains and gusty winds inland across the state, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 8 a.m. advisory. Here’s what to know:Where is Elsa? Elsa was about 35 miles west of Cedar Key and about 115 miles northwest of Tampa, as of the 8 a.m. advisory. The storm was moving north near 14 mph with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph with higher gusts. Its tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center.Where is Elsa going? How strong will it be? While Elsa is forecast to see little change in strength before landfall, there is still a chance that the storm might see a short-lived re-intensification, the hurricane center said. Because of this, a hurricane warning remains in effect for portions of Florida’s west coast. On the forecast track, Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to move near or over portions of Florida’s west coast before making landfall Wednesday, late morning or sometime in the afternoon, somewhere in the northern Florida Gulf Coast. The storm should then see some weakening as it moves inland, the hurricane center said. The storm is forecast to then move across the southeast and Mid-Atlantic states through Thursday. The system is expected to become extratropical by the time it reaches the Canadian Maritimes in 72 hours.Besides tropical-storm force winds, forecasters expect western and northern portions of Florida to see between three to six inches of rain with isolated areas possibly seeing up to nine inches of rain Wednesday. This could cause flash and urban flooding and minor to isolated moderate river flooding.Tornadoes are also possible across west-central to north Florida into Wednesday afternoon. There is also a risk of life-threatening surf and rip current conditions across portions of the Keys and Florida’s west coast. There is also a risk of storm surge. A storm surge warning is in effect for Florida’s west coast from Bonita Beach to the Aucilla River, including Tampa Bay, with 3 to 5 feet of water possible, according to the hurricane center. ?
