A minor league
ballpark in New Jersey was transformed into a large synagogue for Yom
Kippur.About 1,000 congregants from Temple Har Shalom, a Reform
congregation in Warren, spread throughout the TD Bank Ballpark in
Bridgewater Township for Yom Kippur services, WABC-TV reported. The
worshipers were able to sit socially distanced but also see each other,
according to the report.Josh Kalafer, a member of Temple Har Shalom, and
his family own the Somerset Patriots, an independent baseball squad in
the Atlantic League with no affiliation to any Major League team.“It’s
one of the most meaningful things we’ve ever been a part of,” Kalafer
told WABC.The ballpark, in central New Jersey, has a capacity of 6,100.
Northern
community successfully transfers ancient ritual bath to new
home-Kibbutz Hannaton in the Jezreel Valley raised hundreds of thousands
of shekels needed to move 57-ton Roman-era mikveh discovered during
highway construction-By Jessica Steinberg-sep 30,20-Today, 7:37 pm
A
Roman-era mikveh, or ritual bath, was successfully transferred this
week from a highway interchange under construction to Kibbutz Hannaton, a
nearby community in the Jezreel Valley. It took two weeks to prepare the
transfer of the 57-ton stone bath, which included detaching it from
bedrock, surrounding it with a steel cage to protect it, and hoisting it
onto a tractor-trailer to move it down the road to its new home on the
kibbutz, near the community’s existing ritual bath.“It was really
against all odds,” said Steve Gray, a kibbutz member who was part of the
team that moved the unlikely project toward completion. “It was a
rollercoaster of emotions the whole way.”The summertime discovery of the
ancient ritual bath united the kibbutz, the Israel Antiquities
Authority, a public infrastructure company, and the local government in
the efforts to save it for posterity. The existence of the mikveh, found
on the remains of an ancient farm, indicated that the residents were
Jewish and led a traditional way of life, according to the Israel
Antiquities Authority archaeologists in charge of the dig, Abd Elghani
Ibrahim and Dr. Walid Atrash. It was the first Jewish farm from the
Second Temple period found in the Galilee, they said, changing long-held
notions that Jews in the Roman period lived only in villages and
towns.About 1,700 years have passed since the farm was destroyed in an
earthquake, and about 1,400 years since the site was finally abandoned.

a highway in the Lower Galilee, in June 2020 (Courtesy Ibrahim/Israel
Antiquities Authority)-Gray, a tour guide currently out of work due to
the coronavirus, was volunteering on the Israel Antiquities Authority
dig that unexpectedly uncovered the ritual bath in June during the
construction of a highway overseen by Netivei Yisrael, the National
Transport Infrastructure Company. When the mivkeh was discovered, locals
were allowed to come and see it. Hannaton resident Haviva Ner-David, a
rabbi and writer who runs the Shmaya Mikva on the kibbutz, saw the
mikveh and decided to try to bring it to Hannaton.Ner-David, Gray and
another community member, Anat Harrel, who spearheaded an effort to
raise 256,500 shekels ($75,000), enough money to dig up the ritual bath
and move it to the kibbutz’s land — a task that seemed nearly
impossible.“There was a point in the first week of August when we
thought we’d have to return money to donors,” said Gray, referring to
the money raised from a crowdfunding campaign and family foundations
that pitched in as well. Finally, working with the local government
authority, the kibbutz team was given the final portion from a budget
set aside for archaeological and historical preservation projects. The
highway authority gave them until September 13 to remove the ritual
bath.A 500-ton crane was used to lift the mikveh out of its base and
then drop it into its new home at Hannaton, a deep hole that was seven
meters wide and three meters deep. The crane that moved the Roman-era
ritual bath to its new home in Kibbutz Hannaton in September 2020
(Courtesy Yuli Schwartz/Israel Antiquities Authority)-Once the mikveh
was placed in the hole, there was great celebration among the kibbutz
members, said Gray.“It was so much more emotional than I had
anticipated,” he said. Now the kibbutz has to figure out what to do with
the area that is centered with the ancient mikveh. The Israel
Antiquities Authority has technically lent the ritual bath to the
kibbutz, and the community has to figure out how to present the national
treasure to the public, whether that will include using it as a ritual
bath, or creating an archaeological park out of the space.Whatever the
decision, it is something of a miracle that the bath is now located at
Hannaton, said Gray.“It’s the power of the narrative that got people
enthused,” he said. “It’s a confluence of things, of people who are
enthusiastic and the story and Hannaton.”
ArchaeologyTefah unit
used in sukka building for Feast of Tabernacles-Rabbinic debate settled?
Study takes measure of biblical ‘handbreadth’ unit-Comparison of 350
years of Iron Age storage jars finds that despite changing vessel
shapes, the rims maintain diameter of a man’s hand — the source of the
elusive ‘tefah’ measure-By Amanda Borschel-Dan-sep 30,20-Today, 5:55 pm
Pottery
production was man’s work back in Iron Age Israel. A new Israeli study
comparing the dimensions of hundreds of ceramic storage jars over 350
years of production discovered that the inner-rim diameter measure
remained consistent with the width of a man’s hand, an elusive unit
known from biblical times as a tefah. The tefah unit is attested to in
the Hebrew Bible (see Numbers 25:25 and 37:12), as well as in ancient
Assyrian and Egyptian sources. But the precise measurement of the
biblical unit has remained a matter of longtime rabbinical debate. While
Iron Age vessels’ body shapes and volumes morphed drastically over the
centuries, their average inner-rim diameters — between 8.85 and 8.97
centimeters — appear to be a uniform Iron Age unit that corresponds with
the width of the average male’s hand. Moreover, the study states that
palm dimensions have barely changed in the past 3,000 years: The team
used 1980 data from the United States Army, which, when ordering gloves
for their male soldiers, found their men’s handbreadth mean value to be
8.67±0.48 centimeters. Therefore, the elusive tefah unit can be
confidently measured in modern male handbreadths. The measure of the
tefah unit is far from hypothetical in Jewish law today. In practical
terms, the ancient measurement is still used for a variety of
situations, including the upcoming Feast of the Tabernacles in which
Jews’ makeshift huts are built according to prescribed biblical
units. From Left-to-right: Storage jars from Khiyife, Hippo, Lmlk. The
‘tefah’ inner-rim diameter is outlined in red. (Hebrew
University)-According to a Hebrew University press release, rabbis have
tried to give modern conversions, with two leading theories that were
posited by Avraham Chaim Naeh and the Chazon Ish, both 20th century
pre-State Palestine Orthodox rabbis. “According to Rabbi Chaim Naeh, one
tefah = 8 centimeters, whereas according to the Chazon Ish one tefah =
9.6 centimeters,” writes the press release, noting that the new study’s
average tefah jar rim diameter is “squarely in between.”A signature
move-According to study co-author Ortal Harush, the standardized
handbreadth jar rim diameters — dating from pre-Temple times to the
early First Temple period — were very much a manufacturing “signature”
among professional potters.Harush, an expert in ceramic technology, said
the Iron Age potters were experts — skilled craftsmen, versus amateurs
who created almost disposable vessels for household use. Like the modern
masters she has studied from India, these Iron Age men would have
eschewed tools and instead used their hands to measure their jar rims.
For these potters, making a standardized rim measurement was as
instinctive as any number of mindless chores performed today.“Just as
you brush your teeth the same way every morning, without thinking about
it,” Harush told The Times of Israel, these men would have used their
hands in an innate, automatic way to finish assembling the tops of pots
in a standardized manner. “The things you’re not thinking about — this
is who you are.”
Ortal Harush (Hebrew University)-The study was
conducted by Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Harush, Israel Antiquities
Authority’s Avshalom Karasik and Weizmann Institute’s Uzy Smilansky.
Titled “The Morphology of Iron Age Storage Jars and Its Relation to the
Handbreadth Measure (Biblical Tefach),” it was recently published in
BASOR, the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research.Judean
L’Melech jar. (Yael Yuluvitz/IAA)-Harush said that the comparison
ceramic study began coincidentally as she and Karasik chatted and
compared notes on what they were working on side by side in the lab. It
turned out they were both studying Iron Age pottery: Karasik worked on
royal Judah Kingdom storage jars (8-7th century BCE) and Harush on
“hippo” jars from northern Israel (Israelite Kingdom, 9th century BCE).
They quickly realized that of all the measurements, only the rim
measurements were consistent between the two pottery assemblages.Under
the direction of their supervisor, Smilansky, the pair looked at a third
sample of Iron Age jars that was already in the database, an assemblage
from Khirbet Qeiyafa (Judah Kingdom; early 10th century BCE). To their
amazement they found the same consistent handbreadth measure. The team
generated high precision 3D-digitized models of the 307 Iron Age jars,
which all resulted in the same handbreadth measurement, regardless of
the pots’ different production times, vessel shapes, volumes, and find
locations.-The plot thickens-For a control group, the researchers
randomly chose another assemblage that was already found in their
database. They generated 3-D models of 259 Roman-era jars from Shuafat,
near Jerusalem, and here — in a complete surprise to the scholars, said
Harush — is where we see a shift in the potters’ gender balance. The
Shuafat jars, dated to the 1st century CE, exhibit the same consistent
use of a handbreadth measure — but this time the hands were much
smaller, leading the team to conclude they were most likely of females,
said Harush. The authors write, “Similar behavior was observed in the
Roman ensemble, with one important difference — the observed
distribution of the inner rim diameter is similar (but not identical) to
the distribution of the handbreadth of the modern female.”Storage jars
from Khirbet Qeiyafa (Clara Amit/IAA)Again, the team compared the
measures with available US Army data. “Quantitatively, the mean
handbreadth for female soldiers is 7.82 ± 0.39 cm and for the Shoafat
group it is 7.87 ± 0.79,” they write. In the article and in a Hebrew
University press release, efforts are made to tie the tefah measure of
the pots to Jewish law dealing with purity and vessels. Harush said,
measuredly, that it was perhaps one of the potters’ considerations in
using the unit.“Maybe they have rules, but I don’t know. We know of
purity and impurity laws in later periods,” she said, noting that at
least some of these pots were produced prior to the First Temple. “The
spiritual consideration is one of the considerations [for standardized
production], but eventually they produced the storage jars to deliver
goods and for taxes.”

Azeris use Israeli-made drones as conflict
escalates with Armenia — report-As two countries fight for 4th day over
separatist Nagorno-Karabakh region, assistant to the president of
Azerbaijan lauds Israeli military technology-By TOI staff and AP-sep
30,20-Today, 6:20 pm
The Azeri military has been using
Israeli-made attack drones during the recent uptick in violence with
neighboring Armenia, Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the president of
Azerbaijan, said in an interview with the Israeli Walla news outlet
Wednesday.Heavy fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces over
the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh continued for a fourth
straight day on Wednesday, in the biggest escalation in years of a
decades-old conflict that has killed dozens and left scores of others
wounded. In the interview, Hajiyev said that his country has used Israeli
drones, including loitering munitions, or “kamikaze drones,” in the
recent round of fighting and lauded their effectiveness.“Hats off to the
engineers who designed it,” Hajiyev said.He also said that the Azeris
“very much appreciate the cooperation with Israel, especially the
defense cooperation.”A view of an apartment building that was allegedly
damaged by recent shelling during fighting over the breakaway region of
Nagorno-Karabakh in Tartar region, Azerbaijan, Wednesday, Sept. 30,
2020. (AP Photo/Aziz Karimov)-Israel and Azerbaijan enjoy security and
import agreements and it is speculated that Israel supplies 60 percent
of the Azeri military’s armaments, while Azerbaijan supplies a large
amount of natural fuel to the Jewish state.Asked if he was disappointed
by the silence from Israel regarding the recent fighting, Hajiyev said
unequivocally, “No, no, Israel and Azerbaijan understand our situation,”
and cited the multiple agreements between the two nations.Asked about
recent sightings of Azeri cargo planes that reportedly landed in Israeli
military bases, and if Israel was supplying Azerbaijan with weapons for
the current round of fighting, Hajiyev said he didn’t think so and
brushed the question off, citing the defense agreements between the two
nations, and noting that they are not a secret.Azerbaijan’s Defense
Ministry said Armenian forces started shelling the town of Tartar on
Wednesday morning, damaging “civilian infrastructure” and wounding
people, while Armenian military officials reported that Azerbaijani
forces were bombing positions of the Nagorno-Karabakh army in the north
of the war-torn region.Armenian officials alleged that Turkish drones
and F-16 fighter jets were being used. Turkey has denied supplying
Azerbaijan with arms, and Azerbaijan said it didn’t have any F-16
jets. The fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh erupted Sunday and has continued
despite mounting calls for a ceasefire from around the
globe.Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the
control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by the Armenian government
since 1994, at the end of a separatist war following the breakup of the
Soviet Union three years earlier. The region in the Caucasus Mountains of
about 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 square miles), or about the size
of the US state of Delaware, is 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the
Armenian border. Soldiers backed by Armenia also occupy some Azerbaijani
territory outside the region. The conflict escalated on Tuesday, with
Armenia alleging Turkish involvement and claiming that a Turkish F-16
fighter jet shot down an SU-25 from its air force in Armenian airspace,
killing the pilot. In this image taken from video released by the
Armenian Defense Ministry on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, Armenian solders

Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan. (Armenian Defense Ministry via AP)-Turkey,
which has been vocal about siding with Azerbaijan in the dispute,
denied those claims, and so did Azerbaijan. In the meantime, European
officials are seeking to bring the opposing sides to the negotiating
table.French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking on Wednesday at a news
conference in Riga, Latvia, called for talks between France, Russia and
the United States — the three countries co-chair the Minsk group, set up
in 1992 by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to
resolve the conflict — to mediate.“I will speak to President (Vladimir)
Putin tonight and, I think, President (Donald) Trump tomorrow to discuss
and propose an exit strategy” for the crisis, Marcon said.
IDF
closes fighter jet squadron, ending 67 years of operations-Move comes as
part of military’s Momentum Plan, meant to free up resources for more
advanced aircraft; troops to be moved to other units-By Judah Ari
Gross-sep 30,20-Today, 5:55 pm
The Israeli Air Force on Wednesday
shuttered a squadron of fighter jets as part of the military’s Momentum
Plan, in a bid to free up resources for more advanced aircraft going
forward.Earlier this year, IAF commander Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin picked
the 117th First Jet Squadron, which currently flies F-16 jets out of
northern Israel’s Ramat David airbase, for closure, ending the outfit’s
67 years of operation through all of the country’s wars but its
first.“This is a historic day in the air force, which is closing one of
the most active and operational squadrons in the force’s history today,”
Norkin said at the closing ceremony.“The ‘First Jet’ Squadron and its
operations are an inseparable part of the history of the air force,” he
said.Illustrative. F-16 fighter jets from the Israeli Air Force’s 117th
Squadron, which was closed on September 30, 2020, fly during an exercise
in an undated photograph. (Israel Defense Forces)-In February, with the
release of details of the Momentum Plan, the military announced that it
would be closing two air force squadrons, as well as an armored
brigade.According to the Israel Defense Forces, the 117th Squadron
continued training and conducting operations until “the day of its
closure” on Wednesday. The military added that all the soldiers and
officers in the squadron will continue serving in the air
force.According to the military, one of the reasons to close the F-16
squadron was to free up resources for new fifth-generation planes,
namely the F-35 stealth fighter jet, which Israel purchased from the
United States. The Israeli Air Force will continue to operate at least
eight other F-16 squadrons. The 117th Squadron was formed in 1953, taking
part in every war in the country’s history since then, as well as a
number of major operations, including the 1981 strike on Iraq’s nascent
nuclear reactor, known as Operation Opera.Initially, the unit flew the
British-made Gloster Meteor — the Israeli military’s first jet aircraft —
and then moved to operate the French Dassault Mirage III, until Israel
received the F-16 in the late 1970s.Israeli Air Force chief Amikam
Norkin, left, looks at an F-16 fighter jet that will take part in an
exercise in Germany in an undated photograph. (Israel Defense
Forces)-“The squadron was the first in the world to shoot down an enemy
plane with an F-16 [in 1981], and the first in the world to shoot down a
MiG-23 [in 1982],” the army said.Earlier this year, the IDF began
rolling out its five-year Momentum Plan, which is meant to make the
military better equipped to operate in the types of operations that it
is expected to face in the coming years. The guiding principle of the
plan is to take full advantage of the areas in which the IDF has
superiority over its enemies — air power, intelligence and technology —
in order to ensure the military maintains a constant and significant
edge over its foes, notably Iran and Hezbollah.Though some aspects of
the plan require only internal restructuring and reallocation of
existing resources, many of its key parts — namely the acquisition of
new missiles, drones, armored vehicles, air defense batteries,
helicopters and ships — are expected to be very expensive, which will be
difficult to accomplish in light of the financial crisis caused by the
coronavirus pandemic.
Columbia students pass university’s
first-ever Israel boycott referendum-Vote follows a federal complaint
filed in December 2019 accusing the school of anti-Semitic
discrimination-By Hannah Dreyfus-sep 30,20-Today, 5:54 pm
NY
Jewish Week via JTA — Students at Columbia University have passed a
first-ever referendum to boycott and divest from companies that “profit
from or engage in the State of Israel’s acts towards Palestinians.”The
news was released to the Columbia student body via email Tuesday
morning, the day after the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. According to
the vote results shared with The Jewish Week, 61% of undergraduates who
weighed in (1,081 votes) voted in favor of the referendum, 27% (485
votes) voted against it, and 11% (205 votes) abstained. The referendum
does not affect the university’s investments. Columbia University
president Lee Bollinger released a statement Tuesday morning emphasizing
that the university “should not change its investment policies on the
basis of particular views about a complex policy issue, especially when
there is no consensus across the University community about that issue.”
Bollinger,
who earlier this year published a statement tying the movement to
boycott Israel to the current rise in anti-Semitism, clarified that
“questions about possible divestment of endowment funds are not decided
by referendum” but rather through a process involving the university’s
advisory committee.Protesters outside the main gates of Columbia in New
York City call on the university administration to do more to protect
pro-Israel students, October 4, 2018. (Ben Sales)-Still, the student
leader of an Israel advocacy group said the vote, which represents the
first time the Columbia College student council passed the referendum
and brought the vote to the student body, represents a “symbolic loss”
for pro-Israel students.“After everything that was done to pass this
referendum, the president immediately came out with a statement that the
university has zero plans to divest,” said Romy Ronen, a junior in the
joint degree program of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia
University and the vice president of Students Support Israel on

she is not officially an undergraduate at Columbia; students of Barnard
College, the women’s college that operates in partnership with Columbia,
were similarly not allowed to participate in the vote.)“Still, what the
vote has accomplished is making the majority of pro-Israel students on
campus feel unsafe, victimized and disappointed,” said Ronen. “It makes
it feel normalized to boycott and divest from the only Jewish state, a
place a lot of us call home.”Members of Columbia University Apartheid
Divest, a collaborative student group that includes Columbia Students
for Justice in Palestine and Columbia/Barnard Jewish Voice for Peace,
did not respond to a request for comment. The group posted an
announcement with the voting results on its Facebook page Tuesday
morning, shortly after the results were released.“We are so excited to
announce that our divestment referendum has passed with majority student
support at Columbia College! Thank you for your support and for voting,
we couldn’t have done it without you! Full statement coming soon,”
reads the post. The referendum follows several previous attempts by
Palestinian groups on campus to bring a BDS vote to the student
body.Anti-Israel students at Columbia University erect a mock ‘apartheid

Columbia students to “vote no” to the BDS referendum ran September 20 in
the Columbia Daily Spectator, a week before the vote. The
advertisement, sponsored by Students Support Israel, said, “Vote NO to

publication, the Daily Spectator published an apology for running the
advertisement. The apology was signed by the publication’s
editor-in-chief Karen Xia, managing editor Shubham Saharan and vice
president Isabel Jauregui.“The message, which referenced the Columbia
University Apartheid Divest referendum, was clearly inappropriate and
did not meet our standards for distribution,” the statement said. “We
deeply apologize for giving this advertisement space on our platform and
are immediately reviewing our internal processes to ensure that
publication of such material will never happen again. Neither The
Columbia Spectator nor Spectator Publishing Company endorses Students
Supporting Israel and Columbia or its products, services or views.”The
referendum vote follows a federal complaint filed in December 2019
against Columbia University accusing the school of anti-Semitic
discrimination. The case was the first filed since US President Donald
Trump’s executive order on combating anti-Semitism, which grants Jewish
students the same protections as other minority groups. In the complaint,
student Jonathan Karten alleges “pervasive and ongoing” discrimination
against Jewish students by other students and faculty at the school. It
asks the US Education Department to investigate and consider pulling all
federal funding from the university. The university’s director of media
relations, Caroline Adelman, previously said the school had “no comment
at this time” on the suit.
UN nuclear watchdog inspects second
site Iran had previously barred access to-IAEA says it took
environmental samples from location following agreement last month that
ended standoff over suspected activity-By Agencies and TOI staff-sep
30,20-Today, 4:06 pm
The UN’s nuclear watchdog said Wednesday it
had gained access to a second site in Iran where undeclared nuclear
activity may have take place in the early 2000s.“As part of an agreement
with Iran to resolve safeguards implementation issues specified by the
IAEA, the agency this week conducted a complementary access at the
second location in the country and took environmental samples,” the
International Atomic Energy Agency said in a statement.Late last month
Iran announced it would allow the IAEA access to two sites — their exact
locations have not been made public — following a visit to Tehran by
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.Iran agreed to grant access to both
sites on specific dates this month, Reuters reported. The first site was
visited by inspectors in early September.Iran had denied the agency
access to the locations earlier this year, prompting the IAEA’s board of
governors to pass a resolution in June urging Iran to comply with its
requests. The row had threatened to put yet more strain on the 2015 Iran
nuclear deal, which has hung by a thread since the United States pulled
out of it in 2018.The IAEA in March identified the two sites as places
where Iran may have stored and/or used undeclared nuclear material or
undertaken nuclear-related activities without declaring them to
international observers. One of the sites was reported to be in Abadeh,
south of Isfahan — a location that in September 2019 was flagged by
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the site of an alleged secret
nuclear facility.Netanyahu said at the time that Iran had tried to
destroy the site and any evidence it had been used to develop nuclear
weapons.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealing what he says is a
nuclear weapons development site in Abadeh, Iran, at the Prime Ministers
Office, on September 9, 2019. (Screenshot: YouTube)-At a press
conference on September 14, IAEA director Grossi said analyzing
environmental samples collected at the first site would take “not less
than a couple of months, two or three months maybe.”That means the
results will only be available after the coming US presidential
elections, in which US President Donald Trump is hoping to win a second
term in office. The ultimate goal of the 2015 deal, known as the Joint
Comprehensive Plan of Action, is to prevent Iran from developing a
nuclear bomb, which Iran insists it does not want to do.Since Trump
pulled the US unilaterally out of the pact in 2018, Iran has steadily
been violating restrictions on the amount of uranium it can enrich and
the purity it is allowed to enrich to, and other limits. But one reason
the other countries involved — Germany, France, Britain, China and
Russia — say that it’s important to maintain the agreement is for the
access IAEA inspectors continue to get to Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Paris
meat cleaver attacker charged with attempted terrorist killings-Suspect
in attack near former Charlie Hebdo offices named as Pakistan-born
Zaheer Hassan Mehmood, 25; he admits to initially lying about his
identity-By AFP -sep 30,20-Today, 3:22 pm
PARIS, France — A
man who wounded two people in a meat cleaver attack in Paris last week
has been charged with “attempted murder with relation to a terrorist
enterprise,” French anti-terrorist prosecutors told AFP on Tuesday.A
judge also placed the man — who has identified himself as 25-year-old
Pakistani-born Zaheer Hassan Mehmood — under judicial investigation for
criminal association with terrorists, the prosecuting authority PNAT
said, adding that a request had been made for him to be remanded in
custody.Earlier, the suspect admitted he lied to police when he said he
was 18 and had entered the country as a minor, the lead prosecutor in
the case said. The assailant in what the French government has called an
act of Islamist terrorism had initially identified himself as Hassan A.,
an 18-year-old born in the Pakistani town of Mandi Bahauddin. He
entered France in 2018 under the false identity that gave him access to
social security aid for minors, national anti-terror prosecutor
Jean-Francois Ricard told a news conference. After the attack last
Friday, investigators became suspicious about his claims when they found
a photo of an identity document on his phone that appeared to suggest
he was actually called Zaheer Hassan Mehmood, aged 25.“He eventually
admitted that this was his true identity and that he was 25 years old,”
Ricard said. This grab taken from a video obtained by AFP shows French
police detaining an alleged suspect after several people were injured
near the former offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo
following an attack by a man wielding a knife in Paris on September 25,
2020 (Laura CAMBAUD / AFP)It was under that identity that he appeared in
a video filmed before the attack, in which he said he was avenging the
publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad by the satirical
weekly Charlie Hebdo. The magazine was the scene of a massacre by
Islamist gunmen in January 2015, and the trial of 14 alleged accomplices
in that attack is currently underway in Paris. The attacker seriously
wounded two employees of a TV production agency whose offices are on the
same block that used to house Charlie Hebdo. They are now in stable
condition, officials said.He told investigators he thought he was
targeting employees of Charlie Hebdo but did not realize they had since
moved to a new location that is kept secret because of security
risks.Ricard said the attacker had never attracted the attention of any
government intelligence agency before Friday’s assault.
Gazans
left stranded abroad due to PA decision to cut ties with Israel-‘This is
a humanitarian situation. The political situation shouldn’t enter into
it,’ says one Gazan stuck in Amman; Palestinians say more than 30,000
newborns left unregistered-By Agencies and TOI staff-sep 30,20-Today,
12:22 pm
For the last four months, Ahmed al-Kurdi, his wife and
three children have been stranded in Jordan, where they traveled from
their home in the Gaza Strip for life-saving medical treatment for his
2-year-old daughter. At a time when the coronavirus pandemic has led to
border closures and travel restrictions, they find themselves stuck, not
because of quarantine measures, but because of a dispute between Israel
and the Palestinian Authority. They need an Israeli permit to return to
Gaza through the West Bank and Israel, which would normally be
facilitated by the PA’s civil affairs division. But the Palestinians
officially cut off all ties with Israel in May to protest Israel’s plans
— since suspended — to annex parts of the West Bank, making it even
more complicated to get permission to travel. The Palestinians had hoped
to pressure Israel by forcing it to assume more of the burden of its
half-century military rule of the territory. Instead, the decision has
mainly hurt ordinary Palestinians.Al-Kurdi and his wife, who left Gaza
with their children last December, have been on unpaid leave, relying on
relatives to pay rent and support them in Amman, Jordan’s capital,
where prices are much higher than in Gaza. They are among dozens of
families who left Gaza for health or other reasons and cannot
return. They applied for a permit through the PA embassy in Amman but
were told it is no longer in contact with Israel.“It’s very hard, not
just for us but for the other Gazans in Jordan who want to go back and
can’t,” he said. “This is a humanitarian situation. The political
situation shouldn’t enter into it.”Gaza has been under an
Israeli-Egyptian blockade since the Islamic terror group Hamas seized
power from PA security forces in 2007 in a bloody coup. Israel allows
Gazans to travel for humanitarian reasons but requires them to
coordinate requests through the Western-backed Palestinian Authority,
which governs parts of the West Bank.Hamas security officers stand guard

Rafah, Gaza Strip, August 11, 2020 (AP Photo/Adel Hana)-Gisha, an
Israeli group that advocates for Palestinian freedom of movement, has
been able to help some families obtain permits outside the normal
channels. But it claims Israel is ultimately responsible for allowing
Gazans to return home.“Israel’s ongoing control over Gaza comes with
legal obligations to uphold the rights of Gaza residents, including to
freedom of movement,” it said in a statement. “Returning to one’s home
is a fundamental human right that cannot be withheld using procedural
excuses.”The Israeli military body that oversees Palestinian civilian
affairs, known as COGAT, said that under past agreements the PA must
submit requests for residents to enter Israel through the established
channels. COGAT said it is prepared to process such requests but has not
received any from the PA since it cut off contact.COGAT “is constantly
working, together with the appropriate offices — despite the suspension
of coordination by the Civil Committee, and despite the outbreak of the
coronavirus — to provide the best possible response to the various
humanitarian needs of the Gaza Strip residents,” it said in a
statement. In theory, Palestinians have the option of bypassing Israel
altogether and entering Gaza through the Rafah crossing with Egypt. But
Egypt only opens the crossing sporadically, and getting there requires
flying to Cairo and then traveling overland across the northern Sinai
Peninsula, where Egyptian troops are battling insurgents from an Islamic
State affiliate. The al-Kurdi family departed through Rafah after
several delays in getting an exit permit from Israel, which was
ultimately granted. But that was late last year, before the pandemic.“My
daughter’s condition does not allow us to travel by way of Rafah. You
have to take a car from Cairo and it can take 11 hours with all the
checkpoints,” al-Kurdi said. “My daughter is
immunocompromised.”Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during a
meeting to discuss the United Arab Emirates’ deal with Israel to
normalize relations, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, August 18, 2020.
(Mohamad Torokman/Pool Photo via AP, File)-The PA decision to cut ties
with Israel has affected ordinary Palestinians in other ways. The PA is
refusing to accept tax and customs duties Israel collects on its behalf,
forcing it to slash the salaries of civil servants. The boycott has also
affected the registration of Palestinian births, leaving more than
30,000 babies unregistered.Under agreements reached in the 1990s, during
the now-moribund peace process, the Palestinian Authority issues birth
certificates and passports. But these must be registered with Israel,
which controls all access to the West Bank. The unregistered babies are
therefore unable to travel.Palestinian Authority Deputy Interior
Minister Yousef Harb says more than 33,000 babies have been born in the
West Bank since the Palestinians cut ties on May 19, and at least six
families have been unable to travel abroad for work because they can’t
bring their babies with them.“The entire world recognizes the documents
issued by PA, except for Israel,” he said.Palestinian officials say they
have reached out to international organizations to facilitate travel
but that Israel insists on direct coordination.Senior PLO official Ahmed
Majdalani. (YouTube screen capture)-Why on earth should we give our
citizen records to Israel? The entire world recognizes us, why don’t
they?” said Ahmad Majdalani, a senior PA official. The Palestinian
Authority appears to be in a holding pattern, hoping a new US
administration will discard President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace
plan, which it perceives as strongly favoring Israel and would have
allowed Israel to annex up to 30 percent of the West Bank (though Israel
subsequently shelved annexation plans in exchange for the normalization
of ties with the United Arab Emirates). In the meantime, Palestinians
stranded outside the country are stuck in limbo.Dr. Mohammed Ayesh left
Gaza in the summer of 2019 to do a medical specialization in Ukraine.
After he completed his course his student visa expired, but he was
unable to return via Jordan because he cannot get an Israeli permit.
Instead, he flew to Dubai, where he has been stranded for more than two
months. He hasn’t seen his three children in more than a year.“Their
birthdays are all in the summer, in June, August and September… I missed
them all,” he said. “My daughter calls me a liar. She says you promised
you would return before I went back to school and you aren’t here.”As a
highly trained physician, he could find lucrative work in the United
Arab Emirates, far from the crippling conditions of the Gaza blockade.
But he’s homesick.“People ask me why I can’t return, if it’s because of
the coronavirus, and I say no, it’s because of the Israeli military and
the Israeli government,” he said, placing the blame on the Jewish state
rather than the PA. “They won’t let me come back.”
UAE announces
candidacy for UN Security Council seat-Emiratis seeking non-permanent
representation for 2022-2023; election will be held in June-By AFP-sep
30,20-Today, 12:13 pm
DUBAI — The United Arab Emirates has
announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations
Security Council for the 2022-2023 term, state media said.In June 2021,
the UN General Assembly will elect five member states to serve on the
Security Council, which has a total of 10 non-permanent members who
serve overlapping two-year terms.“My country will follow the same steps
and principles upon which it was founded to maintain international peace
and security in cooperation with the members of the Council,” Foreign
Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in New York.“We affirm
that the UAE will work towards solving the important issues confronting
states with resolve and determination,” he said, according to a report
on official Emirati news agency WAM on Tuesday. The UAE’s role on the
global diplomatic stage has been heightened in recent months with its
announcement of normalized relations with Israel, a major policy shift
that was also adopted by neighboring Bahrain. In this September 15, 2020

share a common hostility to Iran, which Washington has put under
crippling economic and diplomatic pressure.WAM said that the UAE’s
campaign for the seat would focus on “efforts to advance inclusion, spur
innovation, build resilience and secure peace.”It last served on the
Security Council in 1986-1987.Five nations — Britain, China, France,
Russia and the United States — hold permanent seats on the world body’s

resolutions.
University of Illinois students pass resolution
urging divestment from Israel-Nonbinding BDS move was bundled with vote
in support of Black Lives Matter movement; Jewish student group slams
‘attempt to paint Israel and Jews as the obstacle to racial equity’
By Marcy Oster-sep 30,20-Today, 10:55 am
JTA
— The University of Illinois student government included a call for
divestment from companies that do business with Israel as part of a
resolution in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The
university’s Office of Student Affairs condemned the nonbinding
resolution, which passed last week in a 22-11 vote with seven
abstentions.“It is unfortunate that a resolution before the group
tonight was designed to force students who oppose efforts to divest from
Israel to also vote against support for the Black Lives Matter
movement,” the Office of Student Affairs said in a statement signed by
Chancellor Robert Jones and five vice chancellors.“This resolution
includes several points on which we can agree, but a foundational value
of this institution is inclusion, and this resolution includes language
that we cannot and will not support,” the statement continued. In
February, the student government passed a resolution by a vote of 20-9
with seven abstentions that called on the university to divest from
“companies that profit from human-rights violations in Palestine and
other communities globally,” naming three companies in particular:
Raytheon, Elbit Systems Ltd. and Northrup Grumman. But a week later the
body’s president vetoed the resolution, saying its passage “made
students feel unsafe and have fostered a climate of hate on this
campus.”The February vote was the fifth attempt in as many years to pass
a BDS resolution against Israel.“After five failed attempts in as many
years to pass BDS, student activists enshrouded calls for divestment
within a resolution opposing anti-Black violence,” the Illini Hillel at
Cohen Center for Jewish Life said Thursday in a statement on Facebook.
“This was an attempt to paint Israel and Jews as the obstacle to racial
equity, amidst the holiest time in the Jewish calendar.“The Jewish
students refused to submit to this anti-Semitic litmus test. Instead
they issued a joint statement of principles declaring their steadfast
commitment to Zionism and racial justice. During the ISG meeting
Senators made clear that they are driven by their Jewish values which
call for social, racial and environmental justice.”Jewish students read
the statement into the record during the student government meeting.
Scandinavian
neo-Nazis circulate anti-Semitic flyers on Yom Kippur-Far-right
extremists carried out coordinated campaign in Sweden, Denmark, Norway
and Iceland on Jewish holy day, says World Jewish Congress-By Cnaan
Liphshiz-sep 30,20-Today, 10:38 am
JTA — Several incidents
involving anti-Semitic hate speech occurred in Scandinavia in what the
World Jewish Congress said was a coordinated campaign by neo-Nazis on
Yom Kippur. Most of the incidents recorded on Sunday and Monday in
Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland involved the circulation of
anti-Semitic pamphlets, sometimes in the form of small posters near
Jewish community buildings. There was no violence in any of the
incidents. In Norrköping, a city located about 70 miles southwest of the
Swedish capital of Stockholm, a handful of men from the Nordic
Resistance Movement stood outside the local synagogue on Monday, which
was Yom Kippur, with flags of their movement, the Jewish Central Council
wrote in a statement. The synagogue was empty at the time.“The Jews
circumcise their babies so rabbis can suck blood from the penises of
newborns and according to the Talmud they may have sex with children
from the age of 3,” one of the posters seen at that demonstration
said. The World Jewish Congress in a statement said the effort was “a
string of coordinated actions on Yom Kippur targeting Jews” called on
the nations to follow Finland’s example from earlier this year “and move
swiftly to ban the Nordic Resistance Movement and rid its violent
propaganda from our streets.”
U.S.Father, son from U.S. charged with joining Islamic State-[Associated Press]-September 30, 2020
MIAMI
(AP) — A father and son accused of traveling from the U.S. to Syria and
joining the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham are facing terrorism
charges in South Florida, prosecutors said.Emraan Ali, 53, a U.S.
citizen born in Trinidad & Tobago, and Jihad Ali, 19, a U.S. citizen
born in New York, made their initial court appearances Wednesday in
Miami federal court, according to records. The father is charged with
providing and attempting to provide material support to ISIS, and the
son is charged with conspiracy to provide material support to
ISIS.According to criminal complaints, Emraan Ali took his family to
Syria to join the Islamic State group in March 2015. Both Emraan Ali and
Jihad Ali received military and religious training and served as
fighters in support of the terrorist organization, prosecutors said. The
father and son surrendered to Syrian Democratic Forces near Baghuz in
March 2019, during the last sustained Islamic State battles to maintain
territory in Syria, officials said. They were recently transferred to
FBI custody and returned to the U.S.Online court records didn't list
attorneys for the men.
Sadly, it’s not a joke: Cuba, China,
Russia about to join U.N. Human Rights Council | Opinion-[Miami
Herald]-Andres Oppenheimer-September 30, 2020
It sounds totally
insane, but the ongoing session of the United Nations General Assembly
is about to elect Cuba, Russia and China to the U.N. Human Rights
Council, the U.N.’s top human-rights body.Just as crazy, the Council is
expected to keep Venezuela as one of its 47 member countries, despite
recent devastating findings by U.N. entities accusing President Nicolas
Maduro’s dictatorship of being responsible for thousands of
state-sponsored killings and the systematic torture of political
prisoners. You might not hear much about the voting for new Council
member countries in the media. It’s drawing little attention amid the
COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. presidential race and other major new from
around the world. But make no mistake — it’s a big deal.If Cuba, Russia
and China win their seats, they will have a better-than-usual chance to
kill future U.N. human-rights investigations. They would turn the
Council into a virtual mutual protection society for some of the world’s
worst dictatorships, more so than it is already.Voting to fill 15 of
the Council’s 47 seats is scheduled to take place Oct. 13 at the U.N.
General Assembly. The candidates already have been chosen by the U.N.’s
regional blocs, which each elect a predetermined number of
candidates.“Cuba and Russia are running unopposed, so it’s looking very
likely that they will be joining the Council,” Louis Charbonneau, the
Human Rights Watch advocacy group’s U.N. affairs expert, told me. “It
also looks very likely that either China or Saudi Arabia, or both, will
be elected for their regional bloc.”How is this possible? Simple: Most
democracies that are not potential subjects of human-rights probes spend
their diplomatic energies at the United Nations to winning seats on
commissions that can help them advance their economic interests.
Dictatorships, on the other hand, go out of their way to win seats at
the Human Rights Council, so that they can fend off probes into their
own abuses. The Trump administration, in protest, withdrew from the U.N.
Human Rights Council in 2018. While the administration was right in
denouncing the Council’s hypocrisy, withdrawing from the Council ended
up reducing America’s influence on it, making it easier for it to elect
more authoritarian regimes.Putting Cuba, Russia, China and Saudi Arabia
on the Council could make it more difficult for other U.N. human-rights
bodies to continue their investigations into massive abuses by the
Maduro dictatorship in Venezuela, advocates say.On Sept. 16, a U.N.
mission created last year by the Council to investigate the human-rights
situation in Venezuela issued a stunning 411-page report, concluding
that the Maduro regime is responsible for “arbitrary killings and the
systematic use of torture” that “amount to crimes against humanity.”Last
year, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet
released a report saying that Maduro’s death squads were responsible for
more than 6,700 extrajudicial killings just between January 2018 and
May 2019.Asked what can be done to stop the likely election of such
authoritarian regimes to Council seats, Hillel Neuer, head of the
Geneva-based U.N. Watch advocacy group, told me that Cuba’s election to
the Council could be thwarted if a democracy such as Costa Rica
presented its candidacy before the Oct. 13 vote.“There’s still time to
do it,” Neuer said, recalling that Costa Rica jumped into the race last
year in an ultimately unsuccessful effort to thwart Venezuela’s election
to the Council. “But it doesn’t look like it’s happening.”My guess is
that the election of Cuba, Russia and China to the Council is a done
deal. The least democracies around the world can do now is to publicly
condemn the United Nations for this travesty. It not only violates the
U.N.’s own norms, which call for taking a country’s human-rights records
into consideration before adding it to the Human Rights Council, it’s
also an insult to everything the international body stands for.Shame on
the United Nations for this insanity. And shame on all the countries
that continue to remain silent about it.Don’t miss the “Oppenheimer

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15
Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell
are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through,
it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under
falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord
GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a
precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not
make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to
the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the
waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with
death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not
stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be
trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall
take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by
night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.
DANIEL 8:23-25
23
And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are
come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and
understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And
his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and
he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall
destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy
also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify
himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also
stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken
without hand.DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to
his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself
above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of
gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that
that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God
of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of
women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38
But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY
GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold,
and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus
shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA
MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and
increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY
LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of
the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR
PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall
come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and
with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall
overflow and pass over.
ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall
be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have
fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they
stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes,
and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall
come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be
among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his
neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his
neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)
Analysis-After years of
bashing Israel at UN, UAE and Bahrain dramatically soften tone-What a
difference a year makes: At 2019 General Assembly, the 2 Gulf states
condemned alleged violations against the Palestinians. This time, they
hailed their accords with Israel-By Raphael Ahren-sep 30,20-Today, 10:26

Old habits die hard. But sometimes they do die, and this
year’s session of the United Nations General Assembly showed that, with
strong political will and the right set of circumstances, it’s possible
to kick even a deeply entrenched diplomatic convention. For decades, the
United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have used the UN stage to relentlessly
bash Israel and champion the Palestinian cause. Even in recent years,
every speech in Turtle Bay featured a condemnation of the Jewish state
and the assertion that regional stability will remain elusive until the
creation of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 lines. In 2010, for
instance, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan dedicated a
whopping 563 words to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His country
believes peace between the two parties is “central and vital” to the
entire region, he said. And this cannot be realized without ending the
Israeli occupation of the Occupied Palestinian and other Arab
Territories and its withdrawal to the line of 4 June 1967, including
East Jerusalem, the Syrian Golan Heights and the remaining occupied
territories in Southern Lebanon.”Abu Dhabi stands by Palestinian
Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and commends him for his efforts to
restore the rights of his people, Al Nahyan went on.“Our commitment to
the achievement of peace as a strategic choice makes it imperative for
us to condemn the Israeli practices committed against the Palestinian
people, including the collective punishment policy and the inhumane
blockade imposed on the Palestinian people in Gaza, and its flagrant
violations to international law, principles and purposes of the UN
Charter and international humanitarian law,” he declared.“In this
context, we emphasize that the continuation of Israeli settlements and
confiscation and judaization of the occupied Palestinian and other Arab
territories clashes with the pursuit of peace,” the minister went on.
“Either choose to pursue peace or insist on continuing the settlements.
Combining the two is incompatible with peace.”We emphasize that the
continuation of Israeli settlements and confiscation and judaization of
the occupied Palestinian and other Arab territories clashes with the
pursuit of peace-He also called for an end to Israel’s “atrocious
blockade” on Gaza and condemned the “Israeli aggression” against the
Mavi Marmara, a ship that tried to break the naval blockade of Gaza.
(Earlier that year, Israeli commandos had boarded the vessel and, coming
under violent attack by Turkish activists armed with clubs and metal
bars, killed 10 of them.)-That speech was delivered a long time ago. But
even half a decade later, in 2015, the same Abdullah Bin Zayed — known
as ABZ — told the General Assembly that the Palestinian issue “remains
at the core of conflict in our region, and one of the main threats to
its security and stability.”The “feelings of injustice and frustration
resulting from the continued Israeli occupation of the Palestinian
territories and the flagrant human rights violations committed by the
occupation forces, provide extremist groups with an opportunity to
exploit these serious humanitarian conditions and to spread their
radical thinking and incite frustrated youth to implement their
destructive agenda,” he said at the time.-UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah
Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan getting ready to address the UN General Assembly,
September 22, 2017 (Aliza Eliazarov/UN Photo)(Cia Pak/UN Photo)-In last
year’s speech, he declared once more that the Palestinian plight remains
the “central issue” of the Arab world.“Stability cannot be established
in our region without reaching a just, lasting, and comprehensive
solution that enables the Palestinian people to establish their
independent state with Jerusalem as its capital,” he said at the 2019
General Assembly.“The violations committed by the occupying power
against the Palestinians, including the creation of new ‘facts on the
ground’ in Jerusalem, will enable extremist groups to exploit the
suffering of the Palestinian people.”What a difference a year makes.

signing of the Abraham Accords at the White House on September 15,
2020. (SAUL LOEB / AFP)-Israel is still an “occupying power” and no
Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital has come into being, but
ABZ sounded very different on Tuesday — exactly two weeks after he
signed the Israel-UAE peace agreement at the White House — when he
delivered his (pre-recorded) statement at the UN.“The call for the
establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of 1967
with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the relevant
international resolutions and the Arab and international consensus, will
remain a firm demand,” he said.“My country has made persistent efforts
using all available diplomatic channels to affirm our total rejection of
the annexation of Palestinian territory, and we have warned of its
impact on all parties and on the security of the region.”UAE Foreign
Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan addressing the UN General
Assembly, September 29, 2020 (screen grab)-The “historic peace accord
with Israel,” he continued, opened “broad prospects to achieve a
comprehensive peace in the region. We hope this peace accord will
provide the opportunity for the Palestinians and the Israelis to
re-engage in negotiations to achieve peace.”In other words: We’re still
in favor of a two-state solution, in principle, but temporarily halting
Israel’s plan to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank is enough for
us right now. No word on Israeli violations. No mention of any
occupation. Condemning settlement expansions? Lamenting Palestinian
suffering? Bewailing the judaization of occupied Arab lands? Not
anymore.‘Israel’s provocative acts enrage Muslims all over the
world’Bahrain, too, has changed its tune quite dramatically in light of
the Abraham Accords. We look forward to a halt to the oppression of
Palestinians, the lifting of the blockade on Gaza and an end to the
building of settlements so as to provide an environment conducive to the
success of these solutions,” then-foreign minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al
Khalifa told the General Assembly in 2013. Israel should halt its
repeated aggressions and provocative acts that enrage Muslims all over
the world and impede the resumption of the peace process-He also
expressed his “full support” of Abbas. “He is one of the best leaders
ever produced by Palestine, and deserves our support in each step he
undertakes toward the attainment of the desired peace.”Four years later,
Al Khalifa reiterated that the Palestinian questions tops Bahrain’s
foreign policy priorities. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he said, is
“an issue of territorial occupation that must end.”“Rights confiscated
must be returned to their owners and this precisely is what Israel,
notwithstanding all its security concerns, should understand, for it
will achieve peace for its people, and for itself, only when it abandons
all forms of violence against Palestinians.”Bahraini FM Khalid Bin
Ahmed Al-Khalifa addresses the UN General Assembly at UN Headquarters in
New York, September 28, 2007 (Marco Castro/UN Photo)-Jerusalem, he
added, should halt its settlement activities and “stop violating the
sanctity of religious sites, especially what is happening in
[Jerusalem’s] al-Aqsa mosque in the form of repeated aggressions and
provocative acts that enrage Muslims all over the world and impede the
resumption of the peace process and all supporting regional and
international initiatives.”And at last year’s General Assembly, which
took place after Bahrain hosted the rollout of the first part of the US
administration’s two-pronged Mideast peace plan, Al Khalifa said the
international community must force Israel “to stop its unjust annexation
policies and violations of international law, which hinder all efforts
aimed at reaching a just and sustainable solution to the Palestinian
issue.”On Wednesday, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, in his recorded
speech to the UN, called for “intensified efforts to end the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict in accordance with the two-state solution”
and urged the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967-lines
with East Jerusalem as its capital. But he refrained from any attacks on
Israel. Rather, he hailed his country’s normalization of ties with
Israel as an “embodiment of our resolute approach to openness and
coexistence with all.”
Jerusalem: He steered Kuwait 'to modernity
and stability' Death of Kuwait ruler draws outpouring of tributes, from
Israel to Iran-Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah’s demise elicits
condolences from across a divided Middle East, where he is hailed as a
bridge-builder-By AP and TOI staff-sep 30,20-Today, 8:45 am
DUBAI,
United Arab Emirates — The death of Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah,
the leader of Kuwait who earned a reputation as a seasoned diplomat and a
rare ruler who could cross the region’s political and sectarian
divides, touched off an outpouring of grief from the Arab world
Tuesday. As news of his death broke, condolence messages streamed in from
across the region, including Israel, and from Western countries with
longstanding ties to Kuwait, including the US and Britain. Several Arab
governments declared days of mourning and lowered their flags to
half-staff in his honor. As a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, a
regional body of Arab Gulf states, Kuwait has often charted its own
course, pushing for diplomacy to resolve a bitter dispute between Qatar
and other Arab states that continues to this day. Diplomats around the
world eulogized Sheikh Sabah as an expert statesman who navigated
regional feuds and provided humanitarian aid in times of crisis.Sheikh
Sabah “was an extraordinary symbol of wisdom and generosity, a messenger
of peace, a bridge-builder,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres. From the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh
Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan offered an admiring tribute, describing the
late emir as “a great pioneer in Gulf cooperation.”In Saudi Arabia, one
of Kuwait’s closest allies, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan
said Sheikh Sabah “devoted his life to the service of his country and to
Arab and Islamic nations,” a sentiment echoed by Bahrain, another close
regional partner.Illustrative: A picture of Kuwait’s ruling emir,

from Qatar and Iran, locked in long-running rivalries with Kuwait’s key
Gulf allies, as well as from Israel, underscoring his reputation as a
source of stability in a turbulent region. The emir of Qatar, Sheikh
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, referred to Sheikh Sabah as the “father of
all.”“With his departure, the world has lost a beacon and symbol of
humanity,” he wrote.File: Kuwait’s emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah,

(AP/Ebrahim Noroozi, File)-Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran
wrote on Twitter that he was “pained” by the loss of Sheikh Sabah, who
“painted an image of moderation and balance, for Kuwait and for the
region.”The Israeli Foreign Ministry lauded Sheikh Sabah for steering
Kuwait “to modernity and stability.”Kuwaiti officials have recently
rejected the possibility of normalizing ties with Israel, following the
accords signed between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump predicted Kuwait would
forge ties with Israel in the near future.Yemen’s Shiite Houthi rebels,
who are battling a Saudi-led military coalition for control of the
country, said they appreciated the late emir’s support of peace-making
efforts.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called Sheikh Sabah “central
to building peace and prosperity in the Gulf region,” noting that his
“humanitarianism and global leadership shaped Kuwait into a prosperous
modern state.” From Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Sheikh
Sabah “made a personal contribution to regional stability and
humanitarian assistance which will long be remembered.”“I sincerely hope
the long and deep ties that unite our countries will continue,” he
added. In September Trump awarded the Legion of Merit on Al Sabah, who
played a central role in resolving a yearslong four-nation boycott of
Qatar. In Lebanon, where the late Kuwaiti leader played a key role in
trying to end the country’s ruinous 1975-90 civil war and later helped
with its reconstruction, President Michel Aoun said his country had
“lost a great brother who stood by the Lebanese during the difficult
circumstances over the past years.”US President Donald Trumpm right, and

NGAN)-Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi praised the late emir’s
long-standing “fraternal stance” toward Egypt, while Jordan’s royal
court announced a 40-day mourning period nationwide.In Iraq, Kuwait’s
northern neighbor, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi recalled Sheikh
Sabah as one of the first leaders to support Iraqi state-building
efforts after the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled the regime of Saddam
Hussein, and later in fighting the Islamic State group.Veteran UN
diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi cited the friendly present-day relations
between Kuwait and Iraq as proof of the late emir’s “wisdom and
farsightedness” three decades after the Gulf War.s Kuwait’s Cabinet
announced that Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah would take
the reins of power, many expressed hope that the tiny oil-rich country
would follow the peacemaking path set by Sheikh Sabah.“The role that
Kuwait traditionally plays in the Middle East as a bridge-builder is
needed today more than ever,” said Ban Ki-moon, former UN
secretary-general and deputy chair of The Elders, a group of world
leaders.
