(Reuters) - Emergent BioSolutions Inc said on Monday it signed a five-year contract to make the drug substance used in Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine candidate, adding to a series of deals likely to put it at the heart of future global vaccine production.Under the deal, starting next year Emergent will provide large-scale manufacturing services to produce the drug substance over five years, with the first two years valued at about $480 million.The news follows a $135 million deal struck by the two companies in April, to use Emergent's manufacturing facilities to speed up the development and production of its vaccine candidate.J&J has partnered with the U.S. government on a $1 billion investment to produce more than 1 billion doses of its vaccine, which is set to enter human testing in the second half of this month.The manufacturing activities will happen at Emergent's Baltimore Bayview facility, the company said. A military court in the West Bank sentenced a Palestinian truck driver who killed an Israeli father of seven in a 2015 car-ramming attack to life in prison on Monday.Shaban Titi had been convicted in 2016 of premeditated manslaughter for running over 54-year-old Avraham Hasano, a charge equivalent to murder in civilian courts.As the Ofer Military Court judge read out the sentence, Hasano’s family members in the chamber began shouting at Titi’s relatives and had to be removed from the room as the verbal confrontation escalated. The suspect, a resident of the West Bank village of Dahariya, claimed he ran over Hasano by accident, fleeing the scene out of fear.According to the indictment, Titi ran over Hasano, after which he dragged him for 37 meters (121 feet), before driving away and leaving the severely injured Israeli on the road.Images from the scene of the attack showed Hasano emerging from his car brandishing a large wooden club after his vehicle was pelted with rocks by Palestinians near Hebron. He approached the truck, waving the club, and was run over. MOSCOW, July 5 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday constitutional amendments approved in a nationwide vote created the conditions for Russia's "progressive development" for decades to come.One of the changes approved in the week-long vote that ended on July 1 makes it possible for Putin to seek two more terms as president and, if re-elected, to stay in power until 2036.Other changes grant former presidents immunity from prosecution, enshrine a reference in the constitution to God, offer pensions protection and define marriage as a union of a man and a woman.Opponents said the vote was illegal and illegitimate, and an independent monitoring group said the vote was deeply flawed.But Russian news agencies quoted Putin as saying: "I am absolutely convinced that we are doing the right thing in adopting amendments to the current constitution.""They will strengthen our nationhood and create conditions for the progressive development of our country for decades to come," he said.The Kremlin has hailed the overwhelming vote in favour of the amendments as a triumph for Putin, who said on Friday that Russian society had shown unity by voting to back the reforms.(Reporting by Maxim Rodionov, Editing by Timothy Heritage)

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Edouard formed on Sunday evening over the far North Atlantic, but posed no immediate threat to land.The storm had top sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and was centred at 11 p.m. EDT about 685 miles (1,100 kilometres) south-southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, off Canada, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. It was moving to the northeast at 35 mph (56 kph) and was expected to become a post-tropical storm on Monday.No coastal storm watches or warnings are in effect, and little significant change in strength was forecast for the brief period Edouard was expected to remain a tropical storm.Edouard is the earliest fifth named storm on record, according to Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach. The previous record was Emily on July 12, 2005, Klotzbach said.Two named storms formed in the Atlantic before the official start of the hurricane season June 1.Tropical Storm Arthur formed off the coast of Florida May 16, and Tropical Storm Bertha surprised the South Carolina coast May 27.The earliest tropical cyclone on record also formed earlier this year, in the eastern North Pacific, far off the coast of Mexico on April 25.The Associated Press.
