K says Russian intelligence trying to steal virus vaccine research-The Times of Israel-searchers in Britain, US, Canada said targeted as London vows ‘to hold perpetrators to account’-By AFP-JULY 16,20-Today, 6:02 pm 0

LONDON, United Kingdom — Britain’s cybersecurity agency on Thursday accused a hacking group it said “almost certainly” operates as part of Russian intelligence services of trying to steal research into potential coronavirus vaccines. Russia denied the claim.Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre said the attacks by the group APT29 were ongoing but targets have so far included UK, US and Canadian vaccine research and development organizations.“The NCSC assesses that APT29, also named the Dukes or Cozy Bear, almost certainly operate as part of Russian Intelligence Services,” it said, adding that the United States and Canada shared this view.Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab expressed outrage at the findings, which were published alongside an advisory on how organizations can help protect themselves from cyber attacks.Britain’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab arrives for a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 10 Downing Street in London, January 30, 2020. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth)-“It is completely unacceptable that the Russian Intelligence Services are targeting those working to combat the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.“While others pursue their selfish interests with reckless behavior, the UK and its allies are getting on with the hard work of finding a vaccine and protecting global health.“The UK will continue to counter those conducting such cyber attacks, and work with our allies to hold perpetrators to account.”The NCSC said that government, diplomatic, think tank, healthcare and energy groups were mainly being targeted, in a bid “to steal valuable intellectual property.”The Kremlin denied the claims.Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow, Russia, April 6, 2017. (AP Photo/Pavel Golovkin)“We have no information on who could have hacked pharmaceutical companies and research centers in Britain,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the TASS news agency.“We can only say this: Russia has nothing to do with these attempts. We do not accept such accusations.”The same applied to “the latest groundless allegations of interference in 2019 elections,” he said. The British government accused “Russian actors” on Thursday of seeking to disrupt last year’s general election in the UK by circulating leaked trade documents between London and Washington.Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova earlier mocked the British claim, saying it was “so hazy and contradictory that it’s practically impossible to understand.”“On the one hand, there’s no evidence. On the other hand they are talking about some retaliatory measures. These things are mutually exclusive,” she said.

Check Point researchers help fix cybersecurity flaw in Zoom software-The Times of Israel-Attackers had opportunity to impersonate an organization’s customized Zoom URL link and send legitimate-looking invitations to victims; problem now fixed-By Shoshanna Solomon-july 16,20-Today, 1:57 pm

Researchers at Israeli cybersecurity firm Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. said Thursday that they helped the maker of the popular Zoom video conferencing software find and fix a security issue that could have led to successful phishing attempts.Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to get sensitive information or data, such as usernames or passwords or credit card details, by criminals disguising themselves as trustworthy entities in electronic communications with the victims; the criminals send victims links to click on that then direct them to enter personal information into fake websites. The lockdowns imposed globally by the coronavirus pandemic have led to a surge in the use of the Zoom videoconferencing platform, with usage soaring to over 300 million daily participants in meetings in April from 10 million in December 2019.But this explosive growth in the use of the software has brought in its wake cyber-criminals, said researchers at the cybersecurity firm, who have worked with Zoom Video Communications to improve the security of the platform, after they found the flaw.“The explosive growth in Zoom usage has been matched by an increase in new domain registrations with names including the word ‘Zoom,’ indicating that cyber-criminals are targeting Zoom domains as phishing bait to lure victims,” wrote Adi Ikan, Liri Porat and Ori Hamama in a blog post of the Israeli firm. “We have also detected malicious files impersonating Zoom’s installation program.”The current flaw was found in Zoom’s Vanity URL, which allows organizations to create a customized version of Zoom’s invitation links — so instead of the standard Zoom link the person gets one with the organization’s name and logo in it.Prior to Zoom’s fix, the flaw would have given an attacker the possibility to impersonate an organization’s Vanity URL link, and even the logo of the firm, and send invitations from the organization, which appeared to be legitimate, to trick a victim. An additional flaw allowed attackers to access the official websites companies set up with Zoom, via which to hold their meetings. Hackers could have then invited victims to meetings, sending links from these websites. Thus, when the victims click join, to enter a meeting, and get prompted to introduce the meeting ID, they would have no way of knowing that the invitation actually didn’t come from the legitimate organization, the researchers said.“There are many relevant day-to-day scenarios that could potentially have been leveraged using this impersonation method, which could have resulted in a successful phishing attempt,” the researchers wrote. “For example, an attacker could have introduced themselves as legitimate employees in the company, sending an invitation from an organization’s Vanity URL to relevant customers in order to gain credibility. This activity could have then been leveraged to stealing credentials and sensitive information, as well as other fraud actions.”In an emailed comment, Zoom said: “Zoom has addressed the issue reported by Check Point and put additional safeguards in place for the protection of its users. Zoom encourages its users to thoroughly review the details of any meeting they plan to attend prior to joining, and to only join meetings from users they trust. We appreciate Check Point notifying us of this issue. If you think you’ve found a security issue with Zoom products, please send a detailed report to security@zoom.us.”In January this year Check Point researchers said hackers were able to potentially identify and join active meetings to which they weren’t invited, causing Zoom to quickly introduce a number of fixes that ensured that such attacks are no longer possible.Check Point researchers have also issued guidelines on how to use Zoom safely.

Court upholds incitement conviction for Islamist preacher Raed Salah-The Times of Israel-Judges say firebrand head of outlawed group gave speeches in support of gunmen who killed 2 police officers at Temple Mount in 2017, sparking more violence-By TOI staff-july 16,20-Today, 3:09 pm

Sheikh Raed Salah, the firebrand leader of an outlawed Islamist group, will serve 28 months in prison for incitement to violence, an Israeli court said Thursday, rejecting an appeal against his conviction.Salah, the leader of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement, was convicted by the Haifa Magistrate’s Court in November of incitement to terror and membership in an outlawed organization, after he spoke out in support of a terror attack on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount that left two police officers dead and inflamed regional tensions. The Haifa District Court upheld the conviction and a 28-month sentence, but ruled that Salah would not need to report to prison until August 4 so that he can celebrate the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, which ends a day earlier.Salah, a former mayor of Umm al-Fahm who has become a cause celebre in some pro-Palestinian circles, has served several stints in prison for incitement or support for terror.According to the the verdict, Salah, 61, gave a sermon on July 21, 2017, in which he praised “martyrs of Al-Aqsa,” and those “guarding” the flashpoint compound, home to the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.“For eight days they have not stopped [saying] over and over ‘In blood and spirit we will liberate Al-Aqsa. Have not stopped confronting the Israeli occupation, confronting the guns of the Israeli occupation, unafraid of the batons of the Israeli occupation and not afraid to be injured, wounded, arrested, not afraid of anything but Allah,” he said, according to the charge sheet. The sermon came a week after three men from Umm al-Fahm carried out a shooting attack at the entrance to the Temple Mount, killing two policemen. In the wake of the attack, Israel first shut the compound, and then installed metal detectors at the site, a move that led Palestinians to hold massive protests outside, ratcheting up already high tensions.Muslim worshipers perform noon prayers by the Lions Gate, outside the Temple Mount, in Jerusalem’s Old City, July 20, 2017. (Miriam Alster/Flash90)-Salah gave a similar speech at a symbolic funeral for the three gunmen in Umm al Fahm, and a would-be stabber from the city who was arrested in Tel Aviv days later indicated he had been inspired by Salah’s words, according to the conviction.Salah had argued in his defense that his views were religious opinions rooted in the Quran and did not constitute a direct call to violence.“It’s all lies,” he said after his original sentencing, according to the Haaretz daily. “Everything that was said [by the court] was far from the truth. I don’t know where they got this stuff that was attributed to me. It looks like someone wrote lies about me and the court presented them as facts.”The judges in the appeal also rejected Salah’s contention that the attack was not terror, calling the claim “outrageous,” and noting that his use of the word “martyr,” or shahid, supported the contention that it was terror. They also rejected the idea that the conviction impinged on free speech, saying that it did not extend to support for acts of violence, especially for a community leader.“The leader knows that the public looks to him and learns from his words, as well as his silence, on supporting criminal acts. And so he bears responsibility,” they wrote in the verdict.Sheikh Raed Salah, center, arrives at the Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court on August 15, 2017. (AFP/JACK GUEZ)-A contention that Salah’s Northern Branch organization should not be outlawed was rejected by the court as outside its purview.Israel banned the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement on November 17, 2015, charging the hard-line offshoot organization had links to terrorist groups and had helped incite a wave of stabbing attacks and car-rammings that was taking place at the time. The group rejects the Oslo peace accords between Israel and the Palestinians and boycotts national elections on the grounds that they give legitimacy to the institutions of the Jewish state. There was no immediate comment from Salah. In May 2016, as he began his last term in prison for similar offenses, he told hundreds of well-wishers that he was “honored to go to prison for the sake of Al-Aqsa.”

Jordan’s top court dissolves country’s Muslim Brotherhood-The Times of Israel-Amman moves against Islamist group defined by Egypt as a terrorist organization; leader insists it is ‘a model of moderation’-By Kamal Taha-july 16,20-Today, 5:06 pm

AMMAN, Jordan (AFP) — Jordan’s top court has dissolved the country’s branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist movement, an official said Thursday, citing the group’s failure to “rectify its legal status.”“The Court of Cassation yesterday (Wednesday) issued a final verdict ruling that the Muslim Brotherhood group is dissolved… for failing to rectify its legal status under Jordanian law,” the official said, requesting anonymity.-The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a pan-Islamic movement with both charitable and political arms.It has faced years of pressure, especially in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, and has been outlawed as a “terrorist” group in Egypt and banned in several other countries.Amman had tolerated the group’s political arm for decades, but since 2014 authorities have considered it illegal, arguing its license was not renewed under a 2014 law on political parties. It continued to operate, but its relations with the Jordanian state deteriorated further from 2015 when the government authorized an offshoot group, the Muslim Brotherhood Association. In this photo taken on December 13, 2017, a Jordanian man takes part in a demonstration organized by the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic movements outside the American embassy in the capital Amman against the US president’s declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. (Khalil Mazraawi/AFP)-In April 2016, security services closed the Brotherhood’s Amman headquarters and several regional offices, transferring their ownership to the splinter group in a step the movement denounced as political. The original Brotherhood took the case to court in a bid to retrieve the properties, but the court in its verdict Wednesday ordered it dissolved. The Brotherhood argues that it had already obtained licences to operate under previous laws in the 1940s and 1950s — and stressed that it would appeal Wednesday’s ruling. The group’s spokesman, Moaz al-Khawaldeh, said the Muslim Brotherhood did not consider the ruling as “final” and that a legal team was preparing to appeal.“The Brotherhood will not melt away because of an administrative ruling and we continue to carry out our activities in alternative rental properties,” Khawaldeh told AFP.This file photo taken on April 13, 2016 shows men standing outside the main entrance of the Muslim Brotherhood’s office in the Jordanian capital, after it was shut by police acting on orders of the Amman governor. (Khalil Mazraawi/AFP)-“The ruling is not final and our legal team is meeting in order to submit the legal documents necessary to appeal” the verdict, he added.‘Not outlaws’Sheikh Hamza Mansur, head of the organization’s ruling council, said the group would appeal against Wednesday’s ruling.“The Muslim Brotherhood… is a model of moderation and an important element in strengthening national unity, so dissolving it is not in the national interest,” he told AFP.Khawaldeh echoed him, adding: “We are not outlaws.”“We are ready to develop our legal status within a framework that could be agreed upon.In this photo taken on December 29, 2017, Jordanian police stand guard as protesters wave Palestinian and Muslim Brotherhood flags during a demonstration against the US president’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in the Jordanian capital Amman. (Khalil Mazraawi/AFP)-“But unfortunately the authorities have shut the doors (to negotiations)… and are not offering any initiative to solve this crisis,” he said. The breakaway group — the Muslim Brotherhood Association — aimed to sever ties with the Brotherhood in Egypt, where hundreds of supporters have been killed and thousands detained since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.Jordan’s Islamic Action Front, a political party aligned with the original Brotherhood chapter there, has had 16 members of parliament since 2016 elections. It had boycotted polls in 2010 and 2013. Elections are set for later this year but the coronavirus crisis has cast doubt over whether they will take place. The Jordanian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood has wide grassroots support in the kingdom. The movement is also banned in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries in the region, but is supported by Turkey and Qatar.

In Washington, a debate over conditioning US aid to Israel heats up-The Times of Israel-Restricting assistance now 'a mainstream idea'-With Netanyahu claiming to be on the brink of annexing parts of the West Bank, moderate Democrats are calling for fundamental changes to America’s funding policy-By Eric Cortellessa-july 16,20-Today, 3:21 am

WASHINGTON — If Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unilaterally annexes parts of the West Bank, he will do so knowing that virtually the entire United States Democratic Party opposes the move. The entire leadership has spoken out against it, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and at least 210 of the 233 Democrats in Congress have sent or signed on to letters urging Jerusalem to drop the proposal. But now, some Democrats are no longer just stating their disapproval of annexation; they are now calling for a policy response should Netanyahu go through with it.last week, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen introduced an amendment to the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to block US funds from going toward the prime minister’s planned annexation of roughly 30 percent of the West Bank. The motion currently has 13 co-sponsors, including Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, and is backed by a coalition of liberal Zionist groups, such as J Street and Americans for Peace Now.J Street Executive Director Jeremy Ben-Ami addressing the group’s conference in Washington, March 21, 2015. (Courtesy JTA/J Street)-“It’s a mainstream idea now being actively discussed in the United States Senate, in the heart of the Democratic Party, that in light of contemplated Israeli actions, there has to be some set of restrictions in the way American assistance is shaped,” said Jeremy Ben-Ami, founder and president of the liberal Mideast advocacy organization J Street. The Van Hollen amendment doesn’t go as far as a letter orchestrated by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and signed by some of the most progressive members of Congress — such as Sanders — that calls for reducing the $3.8 billion in annual aid to Israel if the country moves forward on annexation.Instead, it would keep US assistance at the same levels, but bar American taxpayer dollars from being used to annex the West Bank.“People who want to cut aid generally don’t want to see the full check of $3.8 billion actually delivered,” Ben-Ami told The Times of Israel. “People who want to restrict aid are perfectly comfortable with the $3.8 billion, but it just shouldn’t be used for the following purposes.”Still, the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has expressed strong opposition to the amendment, tweeting that it would “weaken Israel’s defenses” and limit “where Israel can place lifesaving missile defense systems like Iron Dome.”At the same time, all sides know that with a Republican majority in the Senate and US President Donald Trump in the White House, the amendment has no chance of being passed and signed into law.US President Donald Trump, left, listens as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, right, speaks during an event in the East Room of the White House in Washington, January 28, 2020, to announce the Trump administration’s much-anticipated plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)-Activists and analysts argue, therefore, that its significance comes more in the form of what it symbolizes than what it might tangibly accomplish in the short term.“There is now more consensus within the Democratic Party on opposing annexation than on supporting the same level of American aid to Israel,” a veteran Democratic operative close to presidential candidate Joe Biden told The Times of Israel. In a politically fractured Israel, Netanyahu has pushed for annexing, as early as this summer, all of the settlements and the entire Jordan Valley — the parts of the West Bank allocated to Israel under Trump’s plan, which theoretically envisions a Palestinian state in the remaining territory with land swaps.US assistance cannot be and should not be a blank check- For Ben-Ami, whose organization has been leading a campaign against annexation in Washington, the amendment’s support among leading and more moderate Democrats such as Van Hollen marks a fundamental shift in how the party views the nature of American aid to Israel.“I think the bigger argument is really over the question of whether it’s appropriate to have restrictions [on funding], period,” Ben-Ami said. “One can quibble here or there about a word and change the meaning of the exact drafting, but I think the principle is what Senator Van Hollen and his co-sponsors have established here: US assistance cannot be and should not be a blank check.”This debate is ‘not going away’The amendment is not supported by everyone on the left. Michael Koplow, the policy director of the Israel Policy Forum, which advocates a two-state solution, wrote in a column last Thursday that he did not consider it a “wise policy move.”But Koplow noted that “the sudden prominence of the debate over conditioning assistance to Israel is inextricably linked to annexation and thus is not going away.” He described the Van Hollen proposal as the “only option left to send a message [to Israel] that goes beyond strongly worded objections.”Halie Soifer heads the Jewish Democratic Council of America. (Courtesy of JDCA)-Halie Soifer, head of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, emphasized that Biden has stated that he wouldn’t touch aid to Israel, calling the idea “outrageous,” and that only 13 of the 45 Senate Democrats have co-sponsored the amendment.“Yes, there is a discussion going on amongst some, but when it comes to those leading the party — and hopefully soon from the White House — it doesn’t appear that they are part of that conversation, nor do they want to be,” Soifer told The Times of Israel. But Palestinian-American pollster Shibley Telhami of the Brookings Institution said that Democratic grassroots activists have wanted see changes to America’s Israel policy for years. In 2014, for instance, he published a survey that found 77% of Democrats wanted the United States to remain neutral on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.University of Maryland Professor Shibley Telhami (Wikimedia Commons)-Since then, he said, a number of factors have made Democratic politicians willing to adopt a more aggressive posture toward Israel — Netanyahu’s acrimonious relationship with former president Barack Obama; Sanders’s strong constituency during the 2016 primary that cared about Palestinian rights; and the Israeli premier’s close alliance with Trump. The looming possibility of annexation has only intensified and accelerated that political shift, suggested Telhami, the Anwar Sadat professor for peace and development at the University of Maryland.“Van Hollen and his colleagues are trying to balance their historical support for Israel — and Van Hollen has always been supportive of Israel and securing aid to Israel — and their anger with annexation and policies that go against the ethos of what a Democrat is and what they stand for,” he said.Telhami conducted a poll in March that found 81% of Democratic respondents favored Israel’s democracy more than its Jewishness. (Forty-four percent of Republicans said the same.)-Most Democrats, however, want Israel to survive as a Jewish democracy, he said, and fear that Netanyahu is taking steps that will make that outcome increasingly unrealistic.“They don’t want to be put in that position. They support a Jewish state. They support a democratic state,” Telhami said. “Annexation puts them in a position in which they have to make a choice. So they are now taking steps to prevent that from happening.”

Central bank head joins wave of criticism against ‘inefficient’ stimulus payouts-The Times of Israel-Amit Yaron says government could have taken better, more effective steps to direct money to those who need it most, predicts economy will continue to slide-By TOI staff-july 16,20-Today, 11:06 am

The country’s top banking official criticized a financial stimulus package proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying Thursday there were better ways than universal handouts to help the country weather the pandemic.Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron joined growing pushback from economists and politicians against the plan, which will deliver one-time payments of hundreds of shekels to all Israelis, regardless of their financial situation, in a bid to inject money into the faltering economy.“I think there are better ways and more efficient ways to increase demand,” Yaron told Army Radio. “We have a safety net and we do need to increase demand, but I think there are more efficient ways.”The plan will see couples with one child receive a one-time payment of NIS 2,000 ($583), which rises to NIS 2,500 ($729) for those with two children, and NIS 3,000 ($875) for those with three or more. Single Israelis aged over will receive NIS 750 ($218). It is expected to cost NIS 6 billion ($1.75 billion).Yaron suggested that instead, the government could temporarily and retroactively raise unemployment benefits for those who are out of work, on furlough, or self-employed to 90 percent of their normal income, as a way to target those who needed the financial aid the most.People wearing face masks as they shop at the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem on July 15, 2020. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Yaron, who said that Bank of Israel officials had been consulted about the plan in its initial stages but only heard of the final result through the media, also said that it did have “positive aspects” in terms of boosting economic activity, but “could have been targeted a tad better.”“The main thing now is stabilizing the economy,” he said. “There are a few things that are tied to increasing demand and growth, some of them by going straight to the consumer. The question is if in this case it should be a direct [payment]. Or if it’s possible to aim this toward those who need it and will use it immediately.”He pointed to vouchers given out in some East Asian countries that ensured spending on certain items in certain places. While Netanyahu said Israel had enough of a “rainy day fund” to cover the payments, Yaron warned that Israel needed to be prepared for the economy to slump even further before the end of the pandemic and should focus on growth later, not now.He said forecasts showed the deficit would double from its current 6.4 percent of GDP by the end of the year to 13%, even if Israel only imposes partial restrictions at two-thirds the level of the initial lockdown in order to curb the virus.“If we have another lockdown, it will cost us NIS 40 billion more. I think that when we are done with this we’ll return to growth,” he said.A man wears a protective face masks in Tel Aviv on July 15, 2020. (Miriam Alster/FLASH90)-Other finance officials have reportedly leveled harsher criticism at the plan, including Treasury director Keren Terner Eyal, who likened the proposal to “throwing suitcases of money that we don’t have into the sea,” according to Channel 13.A meeting between finance officials on the proposal ahead of its release devolved into a shouting match heard in nearby offices, Channel 12 news reported.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wears a face mask to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus as he chairs the weekly cabinet meeting, at the foreign ministry, in Jerusalem, July 5, 2020. (Gali Tibbon/Pool via AP)-Asked about the Finance Ministry’s opposition to the plan, Netanyahu was dismissive at a press conference Wednesday.Netanyahu said he was also working on “a long-term plan for the safe reopening of the economy, so we can deal with the coronavirus for as long as necessary — six months, a year, even more than a year.”Politicians also pilloried the proposal, including within Netanyahu’s government.“Blue and White supports directly transferring money to citizens, but this needs to be done with an emphasis on those whose livelihoods were hurt… we’ll deliberate this later in the government,” the party said in a statement.Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel of Derech Eretz called for “compensation for those that took a hit. Not widespread compensation. Business owners, self-employed people, the unemployed and vulnerable families need to get money. Working families do not.”Yoaz Hendel speaks at a conference in Ramat Gan on September 8, 2019. (Flash90)-Welfare Minister Itzik Shmuli, a member of the center-left Labor Party, said the plan neglected 80,000 business owners who needed support and lacked emergency funding for the disabled, children at risk and the elderly.Netanyahu is facing a groundswell of criticism over his response to the financial crisis as new infections in Israel rise at an alarming pace.Over 1,800 new infections were recorded between Tuesday night and Wednesday night, the highest-yet 24-hour total since the start of the pandemic. Over 200 people are in intensive care and 376 coronavirus carriers have died, according to Health Ministry figures.Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said Wednesday that Israel could return to a nationwide lockdown if immediate action isn’t taken to contain the virus, but ministers have sought to avoid such a step in order to keep from furtherbdestroying the economy.Magen David Adom evacuates a patient at the Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, July 8, 2020. (Flash90)-According to a Channel 13 poll released on Sunday evening, 61 percent of Israelis disapprove of Netanyahu’s overall handling of the pandemic, and 75% are unhappy with how his government has handled the economic fallout of the health crisis. Only 16% said they were satisfied with the government’s economic response.Over the weekend, thousands of people gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv to protest the government’s handling of the economic crisis and what they say is insufficient aid offered to small business owners and professionals in the hard-hit entertainment and hospitality industries. As of Wednesday, 853,843 people were out of work, amounting to an unemployment rate of 21%, the Israeli Employment Service said.

Israeli drones to help Florida’s emergency response to hurricane season-The Times of Israel-Percepto’s Sparrow can fly in winds up to 150 mph to assess storm damage-By Shoshanna Solomon-july 16,20-Today, 1:59 pm

Israeli startup Percepto, a maker of industrial drones, said that its Sparrow drone-in-a-box system been proven to be able to withstand winds of up to 150 mph, making it suitable to fly in the immediate aftermath of hurricanes to assess damage on the ground. The drone developed by the Modiin-based startup has passed level 5 hurricane testing at the Florida International University Wall of Wind, which performs hurricane mitigation research by testing out technologies in high wind conditions. The drone solution is the first one to pass this level of testing, the startup said in a statement on Thursday, making it “the most rugged drone-in-a-box system on the market.” The Sparrow drone platform is able to land in high winds and in snow.Ten percent of power outages globally are due to hurricanes, according to the World Bank, as they can directly damage the infrastructure of power plants and cooling towers. The firm’s customers include electricity firms such as Florida Power and Light (FPL) and Italy’s Enel, as well as Fortune 500 customers in more than 10 countries. The Sparrow system is set up to be stationed on-site, in a “base unit” — the box — where it lands, recharges, and transfers data it has acquired from its flights. The base also conducts maintenance checks on the functioning of the drone, verifying if repairs are needed.Percepto’s technology allows customers to react immediately after a hurricane, assessing and fixing any damage without endangering staff, when the weather is still very challenging and residents are experiencing electricity outages.FPL, one of the biggest energy companies in the US, posted $274 million of damages to its infrastructure in 2019 from Hurricane Dorian, which left 160,000 customers without power, according to the statement.“As soon as the storm passes, we can have this up…inspecting our plant and knowing immediately what sort of damage we have so we’re able to get our power back on that much sooner… for a utility to be able to see our infrastructure in areas where we can’t get to safely; to quickly fly over it and understand what our conditions are…the safety of our crews is paramount,” Michael Dorr, a pilot for Florida Power & Light’s drone system, said in the statement.FPL has six drones installed in five locations. By the end of the year FPL will have two further sites using Percepto’s solution on the Treasure Coast, one in St. Lucie County and another in Vero Beach, with a plan to deploy autonomous drones at all of its substations after that, the statement said.FPL’s goal is to eventually put a drone-in-a-box at every substation, transmission yard, plant and solar facility, according to Eric Schwartz, manager of FPL’s aerial intelligence response. “We can fly every single day and use image recognition to be able to identify a potential issue and reduce the number of outages to our customers,” he said. The Percepto Sparrow drones stay above 130 feet to avoid power poles and other obstructions.“Covid-19 has left critical sites such as power stations bereft of crucial staff, while hospitals and homes have become more vulnerable, isolated and dependent on their utility providers. For our customers, drones ensure minimal downtime despite staff shortages and in the worst weather conditions,” Dor Abuahsira, CEO of Percepto, said in the statement.

Blasts at Natanz site batter but don’t break Iran nuclear pursuits-The Times of IsraelAnalysis-Mysterious explosions unlikely to slow Tehran in growing its stockpile of low-enriched uranium, which had been curbed by nuclear deal that Trump abandoned
By Jon Gambrell-JULY 16,20-Today, 10:30 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A mysterious explosion and fire at Iran’s main nuclear facility may have stopped Tehran from building advanced centrifuges, but it likely has not slowed the Islamic Republic in growing its ever-increasing stockpile of low-enriched uranium.Limiting that stockpile represented one of the main tenets of the nuclear deal that world powers reached with Iran five years ago this week — an accord which now lies in tatters after US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from it two years ago.The larger that stockpile grows, the shorter the so-called “breakout time” becomes — time that Iran would need to build a nuclear weapon if it chooses to do so. And while Tehran insists its atomic program is for peaceful purposes, it has renewed threats to withdraw from a key nonproliferation treaty as the US tries to extend a UN arms embargo on Iran due to expire in October. All this raises the risk of further confrontation in the months ahead.A screenshot from video of a fire on a ship at the Bushehr port in southern Iran, July 15, 2020. (Screen capture: Twitter)-Iranian officials likely recognized that as they realized the scope of the July 2 blast at the Natanz compound in Iran’s central Isfahan province. They initially downplayed the fire, describing the site as a “shed” even as analysts immediately told The Associated Press that the blast struck Natanz’s new advanced centrifuge assembly facility.Days later, Iran acknowledged the fire struck that facility and raised the possibility of sabotage at the site, which was earlier targeted by the Stuxnet computer virus. Still, it has been careful not to directly blame the US or Israel, whose officials heavily hinted they had a hand in the fire. A claim of responsibility for the attack only raised suspicions of a foreign influence in the blast.A direct accusation by Tehran would increase the pressure on Iran’s Shiite theocracy to respond, something it apparently does not want to do yet.The explosion and fire, however, did not strike Natanz’s nderground centrifuge halls. That’s where thousands of first-generation gas centrifuges still spin, enriching uranium up to 4.5% purity. Meanwhile, enrichment also has resumed at Iran’s Fordo nuclear facility, built deep inside a mountain to protect it from potential airstrikes. Iran continues to experiment with previously built advanced centrifuges as well.Chinese President Xi Jinping, left, greets Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Qingdao in eastern China’s Shandong Province on June 10, 2018. (AP Photo/Alexander Zemlianichenko)-The explosion “at Natanz was above all a blow to Iran’s plans to move on to more advanced stages in its nuclear project,” wrote Sima Shine, the head of the Iran program at the Institute for National Security Studies in Israel who once worked in the country’s Mossad intelligence service.Shine cautioned: “However, it will not prevent Iran’s continued accumulation of enriched uranium, underway since Iran began its gradual violations of the nuclear agreement.”As of June, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had over 1,500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of low-enriched uranium. The 2015 accord limited Iran to having only 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of uranium enriched to only 3.67%, far below weapons-grade levels of 90%.Now at 1,500 kilograms, Iran has enough material for a single nuclear weapon if it decides to pursue one. However, that stockpile still is far less than in the days before the 2015 deal, when Tehran had enough for over a dozen bombs and chose not to weaponize its stockpile.Iran would also need to further enrich that uranium, which would draw the attention of international inspectors still able to access its atomic facilities. And it would still need to build a bomb. But the “breakout time” Iran would require to assemble a weapon — estimated to be at least a year under the 2015 deal — has narrowed. This photo released July 2, 2020, by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, shows a building after it was damaged by a fire, at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility some 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP)-All this comes after a series of incidents last year culminated in a US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad in January, followed by a retaliatory Iranian ballistic missile attack targeting American troops in Iraq. Those tensions remain even today as the coronavirus pandemic engulfs both the US and Iran.Iran has already signaled willingness to use its nuclear program as a lever as a longstanding United Nations arms embargo on Tehran is set to expire in October. That ban has barred Iran since 2010 from buying major foreign weapon systems such as fighter jets and tanks.Iran has threatened to expel IAEA inspectors and withdraw from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty amid the US pressure campaign. North Korea, which now has nuclear weapons, is the only country to ever withdraw from the treaty.Expelling IAEA inspectors and potentially shutting down their cameras now watching Iranian nuclear facilities would blind them from being able to see if Iran pushes its uranium enrichment closer to weapons-grade levels. But that also could see Iran alienate China and Russia, which have both urged all parties to remain in the nuclear deal.Centrifuge machines in the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, November 5, 2019. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP, File)-The US hopes to extend the embargo, calling Iranian threats over it being renewed a “mafia tactic.” But Washington has issued its own threats, claiming it could invoke the “snapback” of all UN sanctions on Iran that were eased under nuclear deal unless the embargo is prolonged — despite having left the atomic accord. As Trump campaigns ahead of a November election, he may be more willing to take those risks to highlight that he followed through on his 2016 campaign promise to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and take a harder line on Tehran. The Islamic Republic in turn may be more willing to take risks as well.“The US diplomatic campaign, as well as suspected Israeli sabotage and continued attacks on US forces in Iraq, will raise overall tension with Iran and introduce new uncertainty into the calculations of the Iranian leadership,” the Eurasia Group warned in an analysis on Tuesday. “That could induce Iran to take more risky action in the nuclear realm, or retaliate for … snapback in Iraq or the region.”

Twitter accounts of Netanyahu, Biden, Obama, others hacked in Bitcoin scam-The Times of Israel-Fake tweets from prominent politicians, tech personalities solicit deposits to anonymous cryptocurrency account; feeds of Apple, Kanye West, Jeff Bezos, Mike Bloomberg also hacked-By Agencies-JULY 16,20-Today, 3:20 am

Unidentified hackers broke into the Twitter accounts of technology moguls, politicians, celebrities and major companies Wednesday in an apparent Bitcoin scam. The ruse included bogus tweets from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former US president Barack Obama, presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg, and a number of tech billionaires including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.Celebrities Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, were also hacked, as were companies including Apple, Uber and Bitcoin specialty firms. The accounts include some of the most prominent on the platform — Obama has over 120 million followers, Kanye West has nearly 30 million, Musk has nearly 37 million and Gates has over 51 million.A screen capture of a tweet published on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s account after it was hacked on July 15, 2020, along with the accounts of other celebrities and world leaders. (Twitter)-The posts, which were largely deleted, were fired off from the array of high-profile accounts telling people they had 30 minutes to send $1,000 in Bitcoin to an anonymous account in order to be sent back twice as much.Comments and posts at Twitter indicated thousands of dollars in bitcoin may have been sent to the scammers’ digital account.A version of the scam invited people to click on a link at which they would be exploited. There is no evidence that the owners of the accounts were targeted themselves. Instead, the hacks appeared designed to lure their Twitter followers into sending money to an anonymous Bitcoin account. The Biden campaign, for instance, said that Twitter’s integrity team “locked down the account within a few minutes of the breach and removed the related tweet.”Obama’s office had no immediate comment. In a tweet, Twitter noted only that it was aware of a “security incident impacting accounts on Twitter.”The San Francisco company said it is investigating and promised an update shortly. It did not reply immediately to requests for comment.Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk speaks at the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition in Washington, March 9, 2020. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)-Bezos, Gates and Musk are among the 10 richest people in the world, with tens of millions of followers on Twitter. The three men are worth a combined $362 billion, according to the latest calculations by Forbes magazine. The same bogus offer cropped up a second time on Musk’s account, which has a history of sometimes befuddling tweets from the eccentric billionaire. Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.Gates, who has become one of the world’s leading philanthropists since stepping down as Microsoft CEO, confirmed the tweet wasn’t from him. “This appears to be part of a larger issue that Twitter is facing,” a spokesperson for the billionaire said in a statement.Among the political figures targeted, the hack mostly appeared to target Democrats or other figures on the left, drawing comparisons to the 2016 presidential campaign.US intelligence agencies established that Russia engaged in coordinated attempts to interfere in those US elections through social media tampering and various hacks, including targeting the various campaigns and major party organizations.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jemele Hill call out anti-Semitism in the Black communityThe Times of Israel-BA legend and columnist, sports journalist decry lackluster response to anti-Jewish statements by NFL’s DeSean Jackson, rapper Ice CubeBy Marcy Oster-july 16,20-Today, 2:17 am

JTA — In the wake of a string of high-profile controversies involving the rapper Ice Cube and NFL player DeSean Jackson, two prominent Black commentators called out anti-Semitism in the Black community this week: NBA Hall of Famer-turned columnist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and sports journalist Jemele Hill.In his latest column for The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, Abdul-Jabbar argues that there has been a “shocking lack of massive indignation” over recent statements on social media by various sports and entertainment figures that perpetuate anti-Semitic canards. He cites messages posted by Ice Cube; Jackson; comedian Chelsea Handler, who is Jewish but boosted a defense of Louis Farrakhan’s history of anti-Semitic remarks; and the former NBA player Stephen Jackson, who in defending DeSean Jackson’s original post brought up a conspiracy theory involving the Rothschilds and world domination.Abdul-Jabbar, who has written a regular column since 2017, says Hollywood and the sports world did a collective “shrug of meh-rage” in response to those incidents.“[I]f it’s OK to discriminate against one group of people by hauling out cultural stereotypes without much pushback, it must be OK to do the same to others,” he wrote.Philadelphia Eagles’ DeSean Jackson ahead of an NFL football game against the Dallas Cowboys, Dec. 22, 2019, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Michael Perez)-A day earlier, in a column in The Atlantic, Jemele Hill wrote that “Regardless of what happens with Jackson, the unfortunate truth is that some Black Americans have shown a certain cultural blindspot about Jews.”She called on DeSean Jackson, who has since talked with a Holocaust survivor, to take up Jewish NFL player Julian Edelman’s offer to visit the US Holocaust Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture together in Washington, DC.Abdul-Jabbar and Hill aren’t the first leading Black sports commentators to weigh in on DeSean Jackson and Stephen Jackson’s comments — Stephen A. Smith and Michael Wilbon voiced their thoughts on the topic last week.
