Suicide hotline sees sharp rise in calls amid COVID-19 pandemic-The Times of Israel-Director of group that operates emergency call center says most callers initially cited loneliness and health fears, but an increasing number are reporting financial distress-By TOI staff-july 22,20-Today, 4:51 pm

Calls by Israelis to crisis hotlines since March have grown by 30 percent over the same period last year, and there has been a sharp increase in reports of attempted suicide, according to the country’s main emotional aid organization.A report last week by ERAN Emotional First Aid by Telephone & Internet said that since mid-March, when the government imposed a nationwide lockdown and stringent social distancing restrictions, there have been 143,000 calls to crisis hotlines. The document, reported by Zman Yisrael, The Times of Israel’s Hebrew-language sister site, said 133,000 of the calls were to ERAN’s hotline, 7,000 were to the Sahar aid organization, and 3,000 were to NATAL – the Israel Trauma and Resiliency Center, which aids victims of terror and war. Some 2,880 calls involved suicidal thoughts, the report said.It added that the biggest increase in calls came during March and April, when the country was under a general lockdown that forced the closure of mental health clinics and psychiatric hospital wards. As the lockdown ended in early May and the economy reopened, the spike slowed down, but it jumped again in June and July as the virus reemerged and forced partial lockdowns. While at first, most of the calls dealt with loneliness, isolation and health fears, the second wave of calls has increasingly dealt with financial distress, said ERAN’s director general, David Koren.“There are people whose problem these days is that they don’t know what will happen with them tomorrow, how they will pay their rent or their mortgage and buy food,” Koren told Zman Yisrael. “Others suddenly feel ‘superfluous,’ that they have nothing to do with themselves, that the business they invested in so completely has closed or their job no longer exists and there is no new job on the horizon.”He also said the “policy of instilling fear” by some official bodies amid the pandemic has further contributed to feelings of anxiety.“I understand the need for people to adhere to the instructions and avoid infection. But instilling fear, exaggerated threats about things that didn’t happen and won’t really occur, have a heavy mental cost,” Koren said.According to ERAN, 60 percent of those who have called its hotline are women and 40% are under 40. Among those who called, 26% said they had feelings of loneliness, 59% cited anxiety or a sense of crisis and 15% said they had severe mental distress. The group said it has expanded its operations during the coronavirus crisis, launching special hotlines for Arab Israelis, ultra-Orthodox Jews and Amharic speakers.According to a report Wednesday in the Haaretz daily, there have been 70 people since May who called ERAN while attempting to commit suicide or expressing an intention to commit suicide due to financial distress. There were 10 such cases in all of 2019.“Suicidality in an economic context wasn’t significant before the coronavirus,” Dr. Shiri Daniels, ERAN’s professional director, told the newspaper. “Since May this is the most significant factor leading people to suicide.”Self-employed Israelis protest at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, calling for financial support from the Israeli government on July 11, 2020. (Miriam Alster/Flash90)-Daniels noted that research shows there is normally a drop in suicides during crises, as people are more focused on external problems and less on personal issues. She said, however, that the same research shows a rise in depression and suicides in the years after a crisis.“It’s important to remember that the coronavirus crisis is unusual and therefore it’s hard to forecast its consequences,” Daniels said. She also said there appeared to be a link between the rising number of young people calling and a greater number of people citing economic problems as a cause of distress.“Continued economic harm and a long employment crisis could lead to a rise in suicide and in health and mental disorders,” she warned.Despite the rise in hotline calls, ERAN has been unable to train more volunteers due to Health Ministry restrictions on gatherings, and reported it has 400 unfilled posts. In March, Daniels told Kan TV that feelings of uncertainty and lack of control were exposing people to mental distress. It was important to assert control over information and not to be controlled by it, she advised — to choose when and for how long to listen to coronavirus-related news and information and to leave time to do things that are meaningful. She recommended maintaining a routine while at home, getting up on time, getting dressed, eating regular meals and continuing with physical exercise. She also suggested bringing nature into the home, saying, “It’s good for the immune system and for physical and mental health. Open the windows, let the sun come in. If you have plants or flowers, maybe get busy with them. If you have pets, stroke them. These are things that give us a feeling of connection. And don’t be alone. We can do this together. That’s what we’re here for.”She said, “Far is the new near,” in that a remote conversation was no less meaningful than one face to face.Asked how to explain the situation to small children, Daniels said the first step was for parents to be relaxed, because stress was immediately picked up on by children, even very small ones.Sue Surkes contributed to this report.

Stone tools suggest human presence in North America over 25,000 years ago-The Times of Israel-Previously, widely accepted timeline for earliest archaeological sites on continent was 15,000-17,000 years ago-By Malcolm Ritter-july 22,20-Today, 6:59 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Stone tools found in a Mexican cave suggest that people were living in North America as early as about 26,500 years ago, much earlier than most scientists accept, a new study says. It’s a new step in the difficult and contentious process of establishing when people arrived in North America from Asia. Presently, the most widely accepted dates for the earliest known North American archaeological sites date to before 15,000 years ago and extend maybe to 17,000 years ago, says anthropology professor Tom Dillehay of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He was not involved in the cave study. In Wednesday’s issue of the journal Nature, scientists reported on artifacts found in a mountain cave in the state of Zacatecas in north-central Mexico. Ciprian Ardelean of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas and others say they found stone tools and debris from tool-making that they dated back as far as 26,500 years ago. There’s some indication that some artifacts go back beyond 30,000 years, but so far the evidence isn’t strong enough to make a firm claim, Ardelean said.Ardelean said he believed people probably used the cave as a winter shelter for short periods of time. His team was unable to recover any human DNA from the cave.Dillehay said the proposed date for the artifacts may be valid if it stands up to further scrutiny. But he suspects they aren’t more than 20,000 years old and most likely fall in the range of 15,000 to 18,000 years old. He doesn’t question that some of the artifacts are probably man-made, but said he’d like to see other evidence of human occupation of the cave, like hearths, butchered bones and burned edible plant remains. In a Nature commentary, Ruth Gruhn, a professor emerita of anthropology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, said the results should bring fresh consideration of six Brazilian sites proposed to be older than 20,000 years. Those age estimates are now “commonly disputed or simply ignored by most archaeologists as being much too old to be real,” she wrote.

Netanyahu calls for NIS 3.3 billion increase to the defense budget-The Times of Israel-PM: Funds needed due to 'security challenges surrounding us' Though premier generally approved the boost for military spending, the government still needs to figure out where the money will come from-By Judah Ari Gross-JULY 22,20-Today, 2:58 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for a NIS 3.3 billion ($964 million) increase to the defense budget on Wednesday, despite the current economic downturn due to the coronavirus pandemic, saying the move was necessary in light of “the many security challenges surrounding us.”In a statement, Netanyahu’s office said the decision was made following a discussion with Defense Minister Benny Gantz, Finance Minister Israel Katz, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi, National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and other top government officials.“The prime minister ordered the Finance Ministry, together with officials from the Defense Ministry, National Security Council, and the Prime Minister’s Office, to find sources of funding to add NIS 3.3 billion to the defense budget,” his office said. The directive came amid ongoing negotiations between the Israel Defense Forces and the Finance Ministry over the defense budget. The military has called for an increase in funding as it attempts to roll out its multi-year Momentum Plan, which is meant to improve its capabilities, while the Finance Ministry has generally worked to scale back the defense budget, especially in light of the international financial crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.Though less than what the military wanted, this budgetary increase can be seen as a victory for the IDF and Kohavi.According to the Prime Minister’s Office, this money will go to “funding routine IDF activities, [construction of the] Gaza border barrier, and other critical areas that cannot be delayed.”“Prime Minister Netanyahu stressed the importance of allowing the defense establishment to preserve stability in the face of the many security challenges surrounding us,” his office said.Earlier this month, the IDF announced it was canceling a large exercise planned for September because of a lack of funding, which was widely seen by defense analysts as a move to pressure the government. The defense budget in 2019 — the last year in which one was approved — was NIS 72.8 billion ($21.3 billion), which included funding not only for the IDF but for all other areas under the auspices of the Defense Ministry. In addition to that funding from the government, the State of Israel also received an additional NIS 13 billion ($3.8 billion) from the United States each year as military aid.Due to the lack of a functioning government over the past year, the IDF has not had a formal budget through 2020 but has instead received one-twelfth the 2019 budget each month.

Canadian would-be PM seeks greater role in peace process, is wary of annexation-The Times of Israel-Interview-Peter MacKay, front-runner in Conservative Party’s upcoming leadership race, vows to immediately move embassy to Jerusalem, calls for ‘enormous sustained pressure’ on Iran-By Raphael Ahren-july 22,20-Today, 4:52 pm

Canada should play a greater role in efforts to broker peace between Israelis and Palestinians, according to Peter MacKay, the current front-runner for the leadership of the Canadian Conservative Party and likely future prime ministerial candidate. In an interview with The Times of Israel, the former justice, foreign and defense minister said that if he became premier, Ottawa would seek to be both an “honest broker” and a staunch ally of Israel — as opposed to the current government of Justin Trudeau, which MacKay charged had abandoned the Jewish state in international forums.MacKay also vowed to move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem immediately after taking office. At the same time, he endorsed a negotiated two-state solution and expressed doubts over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned unilateral annexation of parts of the West Bank, saying such a move could complicate future peace negotiations.I think there are opportunities for Canada in the future to try and help with negotiated solutions for Israel. I believe we do have a role to play in this,” MacKay, 54, said during a telephone interview last week on his way to a campaign event.“I know that it’s been very often the United States and the European Union, and that Canada has never been as forward-leaning as I believe we could [be] in trying to bring about sustained peace in the region, which is the goal we all share,” he said.Canada’s then-defense minister Peter MacKay, left, with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, right, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, January 12, 2011 (AP Photo/Majdi Mohammed)-Asked how he envisioned Ottawa playing a greater role in the peace process, MacKay, who was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, spoke of “incremental steps,” such as hosting international conferences and coexistence programs. In that context, he took pride in his role in brokering private meetings between Palestinian and Israeli officials a few years ago at the Halifax International Security Forum. “We were able to sit down together in ways that could never have happened in the region or perhaps anywhere else, but in that place, in that time, there was communication that I found very heartening. That’s how I think it can happen.”He also mentioned a project that saw Israeli and Palestinian girls come to Nova Scotia to compete together in a series of soccer matches against Canadian teams. “It was magical to see this happen,” MacKay recalled.“I don’t think I am being naive in suggesting that it’s human interaction, that it’s that common love of something beyond the daily life of young people, where they are doing something together free of pressure from adults, free of the environment they grew up in,” he said. “And it made a difference. I suggest strongly that for those young people who went home, it lessened the tensions and apprehension and perhaps the hatred and misinformation they had been fed all their lives.”Then Canadian minister of defense Peter MacKay, left, at his Parliament of Canada office, with then-IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi and Canadian General Walter Natynczyk, November, 2010. (S Tremblay/Flash90)-Asked about his views on annexation, MacKay, who has traveled to Israel several times for meetings with senior officials, including Netanyahu, said he believes that a negotiated two-state solution is the best path to peace in the Middle East.“I am not commenting on other elements of this; to call this complex is perhaps the greatest understatement in the world,” he said. “But the Canadian position has always been to support a two-state solution, to move toward a sustainable peace. This, to me, is not inconsistent with Canada trying to be an honest broker and a friend.”He went on to hint at his misgivings about Netanyahu’s planned annexation: “I find that in the world of diplomacy it is those who you are closest to, it is your dearest friends, who can sometimes tell you when you’re wrong, or that perhaps you should wait a day before making a decision… We never really encourage unilateral action that could very well provoke certainly very negative responses.”Pressed on his position on Israel’s goal to unilaterally apply sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and all West Bank settlements, he replied: “A negotiated settlement rather than imposed annexation is the preferred path. This is in keeping with the traditional Canadian position. We don’t want to interfere in that [annexation] decision if it’s taken by the Israeli government — if it’s taken, and that’s the operative word here, I think there is a real possibility that it could make future negotiations more difficult.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (right) meets Canada’s then-defense minister Peter MacKay at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem, January 2011 (Amos Ben Gershom/GPO)-The Canadian Conservative Party will elect a new leader in late August, and according to recent polls MacKay has the best chance of succeeding outgoing chairman Andrew Scheer. But he’s not complacent, heading from one campaign event to another.“I always run like I’m behind. It’s important for your well-being to make that extra phone call, shake that extra hand, and deliver,” he said.Canada just had national elections in October, but Trudeau failed to win a majority and currently heads a minority government that could fall anytime, especially amid the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In this May 19, 2020, photo, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks during his daily news conference on the COVID-19 pandemic outside his residence at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Ontario. (Justin Tang/The Canadian Press via AP)-MacKay said it was not unlikely there would be snap elections in the fall, though he would not actively campaign for that. Trudeau, who is facing criticism for not having recused himself from government decisions that financially benefited close family members, might engineer a new vote himself, his would-be successor surmised.“As the economic situation worsens and people reflect on their difficulties, they may come to the conclusion, as they do so often, that a socialist party is not the best party to be in power during an economic crisis. And they [Trudeau’s Liberal Party] may want to get ahead of this realization,” MacKay said.Canada is traditionally considered one of Israel’s closest allies, but under Trudeau “they have taken the traditional liberal position, which is in the mushy middle,” MacKay charged. “They have not stood with Israel in the United Nations on many occasions.”Statement on the Canadian Embassy in IsraelCanada's Jewish community knows that the Conservative Party stands shoulder…???? ?? ??? ??Peter MacKay?? ?- ??? ?????, 4 ??????? 2020-MacKay now supports moving the Canadian embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but on February 3 he reportedly said he had to consider the matter first.“This is a complicated subject and I’m not in a position to do it, so I can’t be presumptuous in making these kind of commitments until I hear from people,” he told The Post Millennial, a Montreal-based online news site.Speaking to The Times of Israel, he said claims that he had suddenly changed his view to align it with his rivals for the Tory leadership had come from the other candidates in an effort at “partisan positioning.”“I have been a longtime supporter of Israel. My position with regards to the embassy being in Jerusalem is the party’s position, and there were attempts to try to portray me as equivocating; it’s simply not true,” he said.Would he relocate the embassy to Jerusalem immediately upon becoming prime minister, without additional review processes? “Absolutely,” he replied. “That’s the place where the Canadian embassy will be.”MacKay, who was a prosecutor before entering politics, has long been a staunch friend of Israel, though he has also been critical at times. In 2007, for instance, the then-foreign minister publicly expressed concern over the route of Israel’s West Bank security barrier. In 2011, as defense minister, MacKay told then-IDF chief of staff (and now foreign minister) Gabi Ashkenazi that “a threat to Israel is a threat to Canada.” This statement caused some consternation in Canada as it was seen by some as a commitment to fight alongside Israel in a possible military conflict.Asked how he would imbue such theoretical statements with concrete meaning, MacKay cited increased defense cooperation, “demonstrative signs” that Canada will speak up for Israel and its right to exist, and support for the Canadian Jewish community and the fight against anti-Semitism. “These steps might seem small, but taken in totality, it shows that Canada is truly a friend of Israel,” he said.MacKay is married to Tehran-born Nazanin Afshin-Jam, who left Iran with her family in the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and has since been an outspoken critic of the regime. As foreign minister, he sought to have the Iranian attorney general detained for his complicity in the murder of a Canadian photojournalist. A few years later, he was deeply critical of the 2015 nuclear deal and has supported the White House’s decision to terminate it.“We have been very strong in opposition to the regime, and recent and continuous acts of aggression,” he said. “Iran has to conform to international norms and that will require enormous sustained pressure from Western democratic countries.”Asked if he would support a preemptive Israeli military strike against Iran’s nuclear program, the would-be prime minister replied: “Israel has the right to defend itself. Those kinds of questions are hypothetical. But I also know that the Israeli intelligence-gathering capability is pretty evident — it is probably among the best, if not the best, in the world. So I put a great deal of trust in these decisions.”

Chevron’s Noble buy reflects Israel’s ‘warming’ ties with Gulf states — expert-The Times of Israel-Interview-JULY 22,20-International energy adviser says deal indicates Israel is ‘no longer a taboo’ in industry over fear of Arab boycott; still, the energy giant may end up selling the Israeli assets-By Shoshanna Solomon-Today, 1:13 pm

US multinational Chevron Corp.’s acquisition of Noble Energy, Inc., which would make it the new owner of Israel’s mammoth offshore natural gas fields, is an “incredible” reflection of the warming of ties between Israel and the Gulf states, according to Prof. Brenda Shaffer, an international energy expert.“It indicates that the country is no longer a taboo for the international energy industry,” Shaffer said in a phone interview with The Times of Israel. “These firms used to shy away from doing business in Israel because of concern of an Arab boycott, as many of them have assets in the Arab world.”“Chevron has many holdings in the Gulf countries,” she noted. “The fact that it could now be the owner of assets in Israel reflects the change that is taking place in the ties between Israel and the Gulf countries, and shows that there is no more boycott.”Gulf states, including the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have no formal diplomatic ties with Israel, but have increasingly begun to cooperate openly after years of rumored back-channel discussions between them over the mutual enmity of Iran.International energy expert Brenda Shaffer (Courtesy)-Shaffer is a faculty member of the US Naval Post-Graduate School and a senior adviser for energy at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank in Washington, DC. She has also served as an adviser on energy policy in Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office and the Energy Ministry.Chevron on Monday said it had entered into a definitive agreement with Noble Energy to buy all of the outstanding shares of the Houston, Texas-based oil and gas explorer in an all-stock transaction valued at $5 billion, making it the biggest oil deal since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.Noble Energy has stakes in Israel’s mammoth gas fields Tamar and Leviathan. It got a license to explore for oil and gas in Israeli waters in the early 2000s, when no other international player in the industry was willing to do so out of concern of an Arab backlash.Chevron made its first two major discoveries in the Middle East in the 30s, in Bahrain and in Saudi Arabia, and is the only global energy firm that has had a continuous presence in Saudi Arabia since, the company says on its website. The firm also has assets in Kuwait and Iraq.Chevron “obviously thought this out, and I am sure they assessed how this will impact their existing business in the Gulf and concluded there was no significant risk,” Shaffer said. “There is no way they did this on a whim.”A worker walking on the Leviathan natural gas platform, offshore of Israel. (Albatross)-The Chevron-Noble deal was made possible after oil prices plunged to historic lows in April, as the coronavirus spread and lockdowns put the brakes on global demand. And even as prices have recovered from their lows, they remain depressed due to a renewed surge in coronavirus infections, making oil and gas assets cheaper.Noble Energy’s shares on the Nasdaq rallied 5.4% on Monday on the news, bringing its 12-month decline to 51%, and its market cap to $4.9 billion. Chevron’s shares in New York slid 2.2% on Monday after the news, bringing its 12-month decline to 29%, and its market cap to $159 billion. The Leviathan offshore natural gas field, Noble’s largest discovery to date, started production in December 2019. Noble has a 39.66% stake in the field, and is partners in the site with Ratio Oil Exploration (1992) LP., which holds a 15% stake and Delek Drilling LP, with a 45.43% stake.Noble also has a 25% stake in the nearby Tamar field, which started producing gas in 2013 and has been supplying Israel with the fuel. Tamar holds some 10 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, half of the amount of Leviathan. Noble also has a stake in the much smaller Dalit field, also of Israel’s shore.Noble Energy Mediterranean Ltd.’s headquarters in Herzliya. (Sue Surkes/Times of Israel)-The acquisition is good news for Israel, Shaffer said. “Noble Energy did a great job here and Israel is appreciative that they were here when no one else was willing to come and explore.”The Texas-based explorer “also made a lot of money from its Israel assets,” Shaffer said. “I think that having a company of the level of Chevron will make it even better on the technology and environmental level, increasing the quality of its operations.”Israeli environmentalists have complained about the number of breakdowns on Leviathan’s processing platform over the months since the start of its operations, and about the location of the platform. Consumer groups also protest the fact that the long-term contracts signed to provide the gas to Israeli customers are at a price that are significantly higher than prices in the US.Chevron may end up selling the Israeli assets-Shaffer said it is still not clear whether Chevron is planning to hold on to the Israeli assets or to sell them on, depending on purely commercial factors, she said.“It is not clear yet what part of Noble they actually want,” she said. “There could be a situation as they complete the deal that they actually sell off some of the assets. We don’t know if they are actually going to take under the belt all of the assets of Noble, and it is not clear how long Chevron is planning to hold on to the Israeli assets.”In its statement on Monday, Chevron underlined the importance of Noble Energy’s Israeli assets.“Noble Energy brings low-capital, cash-generating offshore assets in Israel, strengthening Chevron’s position in the Eastern Mediterranean,” Chevron said. Noble’s large-scale, producing Eastern Mediterranean position “is expected to generate strong returns and cash flow with low capital requirements.”“That does indicate that they are attracted to them, but in the end, they may actually sell them, mainly because of commercial reasons, and not for reasons connected to Israel,” Shaffer said. “Companies often sell assets even though they are profitable and good, but other assets may be more profitable. It is not enough that something is good; it has to be better than the alternative. And there is the issue of not being geographically spread too thin, and having in place the right administrative infrastructure.”The Noble Energy control room on the Leviathan platform on December 31, 2019. (Noble Energy)-Finding a buyer for the Israeli assets may not be that difficult, she said. “These are very profitable assets. Israel is a stable and high-paying reliable market,” and there is demand from Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. “For a company which has the long-term perspective, it is a high paying valuable market. ”Shaffer dismissed the idea that US political maneuvering was behind the deal.“This is not how it works with US companies. There are not coordinated with the US government and they don’t set their investments by US government preferences. In no way is this connected to anything political in terms of US policy. They operate completely independently.”Meanwhile, shares of Noble Energy’s partners in Leviathan and Tamar surged for a second day on Tuesday following the news of the deal. Delek Drilling shares jumped 30% on Tuesday, after rising 23% on Monday. Ratio jumped 26% percent, after surging 25% on Monday. Tamar Petroleum and Isramco Negev LP, which hold stakes in Tamar, on Tuesday jumped 7.4% and  6.4% respectively, after rising 6% and 5% on Monday.Ella Fried, an analyst at Bank Leumi Le-Israel, said in a note to investors that she thinks the chances of Chevron selling its Israeli assets are high, but that a buyer won’t be so easy to find. There is “a certain chance” that in the event of a successful acquisition, Chevron will stay with Noble’s operations in Israel, “but chances are that operations will be sold,” she wrote. “In such a case, it will be very difficult to find a suitable replacement in terms of capabilities and of resilience to stand up to complex geopolitical situations.”

Tsunami warning issued as 7.8-magnitude quake hits off Alaska-The Times of Israel-Residents of Alaskan peninsula scramble to higher ground, but experts say they don’t expect massive wave to hit-By AFP-JULY 22,20    Today, 12:41 pm

WASHINGTON, United States — A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Alaskan peninsula Wednesday, triggering a tsunami warning for areas within 200 miles (300 kilometers) of the epicenter.Sirens blared as residents were warned to move inland or to higher ground, reports said. The shallow quake hit at 0612 GMT Wednesday about 500 miles southwest of Anchorage, and around 60 miles south-southeast of the remote settlement of Perryville, the US Geological Survey said.Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters … hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.A tsunami warning was in effect for the Alaskan peninsula and south Alaska.“For other US and Canadian Pacific coasts in North America, the level of tsunami danger is being evaluated.”Warning sirens sounded in Kodiak, the main city on Kodiak island, and several thousand people were evacuating lower lying areas, Sergeant Daniel Blizzard, with the Alaska State Troopers, told 11 KTVA News.“People are pretty concerned especially with an earthquake that big that close to Kodiak,” he said. “The last one, there was no wave whatsoever. This time, we’re not sure there is a wave, but we are preparing like there is one.”The first place predicted to see a tsunami wave, Sandy Point, had so far reported only “a very small wave,” James Gridley, director of National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, told Alaska Public Media (APM).“We’re not expecting a massive wave anywhere,” he said.A car is trapped on a collapsed section of the offramp of Minnesota Drive in Anchorage, Alaska, November 30, 2018, following an earthquake. (AP Photo/Dan Joling)The quake, however, was felt hundreds of miles away.“Bed and curtains were going. Felt like a very long quake!” one witness in Homer, Alaska, 400 miles from the epicenter, said on the quake monitoring website msc-csem.org.It was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.7.There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The tremor appeared to be a subduction zone quake, where two tectonic plates converge, a seismologist said.“It’s the interface, the plate boundary between where the Pacific plate thrusts underneath North America. A very standard type of earthquake in this area,” Mike West from the Alaska Volcano Observatory told APM.Alaska is part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. The US state was hit by a 9.2-magnitude earthquake in March 1964, the strongest ever recorded in North America. It devastated Anchorage and unleashed a tsunami that slammed the Gulf of Alaska, the US west coast, and Hawaii.More than 250 people were killed by the quake and the tsunami.

OOOOUS closes Chinese consulate in Houston, drawing protest from Beijing-The Times of Israel-China warns move will ‘sabotage relations’ between the two countries; State Department says Washington will not tolerate ‘violations of our sovereignty’ or intimidation-By KEN MORITSUGU-JULY 22,20-Today, 2:02 pm

BEIJING (AP) — The US said Wednesday that it has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston “to protect American intellectual property” and the private information of Americans.hina strongly condemned the move, the latest in a series of steps by the Trump administration as it ratchets up pressure on the world’s second-largest economy over trade, technology, human rights and security.Firefighters responded to reports of papers being burned on the consulate grounds Tuesday night but were barred entry, according to Houston news media reports. The US, in a brief statement, did not provide any details on why the consulate in Texas was targeted.“The United States will not tolerate (China’s) violations of our sovereignty and intimidation of our people, just as we have not tolerated (its) unfair trade practices, theft of American jobs, and other egregious behavior,” said the statement, which was attributed to State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus.he consulate was informed of the decision Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, calling it “an outrageous and unjustified move that will sabotage relations between the two countries.”The unilateral closure of China’s consulate general in Houston within a short period of time is an unprecedented escalation of its recent actions against China,” Wang said at a daily news briefing in Beijing. He warned of firm countermeasures if the US does not reverse itself. Besides its embassy in Beijing, the US has five consulates in mainland China, according to its website. They are in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan and Shenyang.Houston media reports said authorities responded to reports of a fire at the Chinese Consulate. Witnesses said people were burning paper in what appeared to be trash cans, the Houston Chronicle reported, citing police.Police were told that occupants were given until 4 p.m. Friday to leave the property, the Chronicle said.Houston police said in a tweet that officers responded to “a meet the firefighter” call at the Chinese Consulate building at 3417 Montrose Blvd. The tweet said smoke was observed in an outdoor courtyard area, and that officers were not allowed to enter the building.Wang accused the US of opening Chinese diplomatic pouches without permission multiple times, confiscating Chinese items for official use and imposing restrictions on Chinese diplomats in the US last October and again in June. He also said that US diplomats in China engage in infiltration activities.“If we compare the two, it is only too evident which is engaged in interference, infiltration and confrontation,” Wang said.He also said that the Chinese Embassy in Washington has received bomb and death threats, and accused the US government of fanning hatred against China.

Bill banning gay conversion therapy passes initial vote, enraging ultra-Orthodox-The Times of Israel-Likud's gay minister Amir Ohana defies order, supports bill-Coalition parties Blue and White and Labor support legislation despite objections by Netanyahu’s religious allies; Haredi MKs warn Benny Gantz: ‘You will not be prime minister’-By Michael Bachner-JULY 22,20-Today, 2:42 pm

A bill outlawing controversial “gay conversion therapy” passed a preliminary vote in the Knesset on Wednesday, drawing cheers from LGBT rights advocates and angering Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ultra-Orthodox political allies. The bill advanced after Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s Blue and White party supported the legislation, in a move that generated a fresh coalition crisis. The government’s Labor party also broke with the coalition to back the bill. The opposition-spearheaded motion passed with 42 lawmakers supporting it and 36 objecting.Among the supporters were many Blue and White MKs, as well as Public Security Minister Amir Ohana, an openly gay member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, whose members were officially told to vote against the bill. Many other Likud ministers and lawmakers were not present. The Knesset plenum on July 22, 2020. (Screenshot: Twitter/Knesset Channel)-Gay conversion therapies, also called reparative therapies, have been strongly discouraged in Israel, the US and elsewhere, with major health organizations criticizing what they term pseudo-scientific methods and the treatment of homosexuality as a mental illness.Though discouraged by the Health Ministry, the practice remains legal in Israel, and is still accepted in some conservative and Orthodox circles. The proposed legislation only bars psychotherapists from performing conversion therapy and doesn’t forbid rabbis from continuing to perform it.The bill still has to pass three readings and be approved by a Knesset committee before it becomes law and the practice is outlawed. After the vote results were announced, many in the plenum started applauding, but ultra-Orthodox lawmakers were visibly furious. They shouted at Gantz, “You will not be prime minister,” an apparent threat to topple the government before the defense minister is set to replace Netanyahu as premier in November 2021.????? ????? ?????? ?????? ?? ???? ????? ?? ?????? ????, ?????? ???? ???@ZeevKam @ittaishick pic.twitter.com/XxqVnQ56cM — ??? ????? (@kann_news) July 22, 2020-Likud sources accused Blue and White of violating the coalition agreement, which states that no decisions — apart from West Bank annexation — can be promoted without the mutual agreement of both parties.“Blue and White are creating cracks in the coalition and leading Israel to elections… it’s brazen and shameless, against all coalition agreements,” Likud Minister David Amsalem told the Knesset after the vote.Likud breached the coalition agreement earlier this month by supporting the formation of a state commission of inquiry to probe Supreme Court judges’ alleged conflicts of interests, which was opposed by Blue and White. That move was ultimately rejected by the parliament, despite Likud’s support.A Blue and White source was quoted by Channel 12 news acknowledging the vote was “retaliation” for Likud’s backing of the proposed panel to investigate judges.“We’re not suckers,” the source said.Blue and White had been under immense pressure to support the bill, since the party repeatedly highlighted the issue of conversion therapy during several Knesset election campaigns over the past year and a half. Before the vote, Gantz told his party members via WhatsApp to support the bill.“We promised that and we will deliver,” he wrote. “There could be repercussions. Nevertheless, this is a top-priority moral issue and it’s the right thing to do.”Defense Minister Benny Gantz at the weekly cabinet meeting, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem on June 28, 2020 (Olivier Fitoussi/Flash90)-Housing Minister Yaakov Litzman, leader of the United Torah Judaism party, was livid with both Likud and Blue and White after the vote.“Blue and White’s poor conduct, in violation of coalition discipline, is an open affront to our political partnership,” he said in a statement. “Likud must decide whether it knows how to manage a coalition or if it is committing political suicide.”Litzman’s No. 2, Moshe Gafni, said the party was “weighing our options.”United Torah Judaism leaders Yaakov Litzman (R) and Moshe Gafni (L) at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem on September 23, 2019 (Hadas Parush/Flash90)-“We won’t cooperate with Blue and White,” Gafni said. “But also Likud isn’t worth anything. Where was Prime Minister Netanyahu? Why did Amir Ohana vote in favor?”In a follow-up statement, United Torah Judaism said it would no longer cooperate with Blue and White.Fellow ultra-Orthodox party Shas decided to boycott all other plenum votes and called on Likud to “come to its senses.”However, Blue and White’s faction leader, MK Eitan Ginzburg, said he was “proud” of his party’s vote.“Nobody is prouder than me,” said Ginzburg, who is openly gay. “The horror that harms and abuses young people and creates lifelong damage must leave this world.”Explaining his vote, Labor Party chief and Economy Minister Amir Peretz decried conversion therapy as “inhumane, immoral and un-Jewish.”“Alongside coalition discipline there is also [our] conscience,” he wrote on Twitter.Welfare Minister Itzik Shmuli, also of Labor and who is gay, said the practice was a “crime.”“LGBT youth should be accepted, not changed,” he tweeted. The legislation was proposed by Nitzan Horowitz, leader of the left-wing Meretz party and and one of a record six openly gay Knesset members. In his bill, Horowitz cited the overwhelming professional consensus that the practice is harmful and causes severe mental distress. The preliminary reading of the bill was originally planned for last week, but the opposition pulled it after realizing it didn’t have a majority supporting it. Instead, it continued to pressure various parties and lawmakers to support the bill.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) speaks with Alternate PM and Defense Minister Benny Gantz, both wearing protective mask due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, during the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on June 7, 2020. (Menahem KAHANA / AFP)-Many celebrities have backed the bill on social media. A group of people who had undergone the controversial therapy sent a letter to lawmakers urging them to not “abandon teenagers to mental abuse by ‘therapists’ who will make them believe they are flawed due to a natural and human orientation.”“We are all carrying the scars that refuse to heal to this day,” they wrote. “We suffered in the treatment. We hated ourselves, we suffered from depression, and some of us wanted or tried to commit suicide. It goes without saying that the ‘therapy’ didn’t convert a single one of us. Our sexual orientations and identities haven’t changed.”Dr. Zvi Fishel, chairman of the Israeli Psychiatric Association, called on lawmakers to outlaw the practice, before the vote was held. The first law in medical ethics is ‘first of all, don’t do damage,'” he said. “It is not an issue of religion or principles; it is a matter of life or death.”Rabbi Professor Daniel Sperber at the June 9, 2015, ordination celebration of the first cohort for Har’el Beit Midrash. (Sigal Krimolovski)-A prominent Modern Orthodox rabbi last month issued a religious ruling against the use of conversion therapy, lambasting spiritual leaders who claim the practice can be effective and warning that it can have severe, long-term consequences.“This treatment, according to competent evidence, is not effective at all. It can cause great, physical and psychological suffering, even long-term consequences of severe damage,” rabbi and professor Daniel Sperber wrote in a response to a query from the Israel Society for Sex Therapy.Sperber, an Israel Prize-winning Talmud and Jewish Studies scholar at Bar-Ilan University, wrote that “some of the conversion therapy methods involve torture, and therefore important international bodies have” outlawed its use.In May, the Israeli Medical Association and the Tel Aviv municipality announced the creation of a new hotline for reports and complaints of conversion therapy.Callers to the hotline will be directed to welfare services and the police if necessary and will receive help in dealing with the authorities if they wish. The hotline can be reached at 03-7244660, and is available from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., Sunday to Thursday.
