US streets calmest in days as looting tapers off, most protests peaceful-The Times of Israel-Demonsttors break curfews across the county but mainly avoid clashes with police in marked deescalation after days of rioting-By Zeke Miller and Tim Sullivan-june 3,20-Today, 2:06 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — Protests were largely peaceful and America’s streets were calmer than they have been in days since the killing of George Floyd set off demonstrations that at times brought violence and destruction along with pleas to stop police brutality and injustice against African Americans. There were scattered reports of looting in New York City overnight, and as of Wednesday morning there had been over 9,000 arrests nationwide since the unrest began following Floyd’s death May 25 in Minneapolis. But there was a marked quiet compared with the unrest of the past few nights, which included fires and shootings in some cities. The calmer night came as many cities intensified their curfews, with authorities in New York and Washington ordering people off streets while it was still daylight.A block away from the White House, thousands of demonstrators massed following a crackdown a day earlier when officers on foot and horseback aggressively drove peaceful protesters away from Lafayette Park, clearing the way for US President Donald Trump to do a photo op at nearby St. John’s Church. Tuesday’s protesters faced law enforcement personnel who stood behind a black chain-link fence that was put up overnight to block access to the park.“Last night pushed me way over the edge,” said Jessica DeMaio, 40, of Washington, who attended a Floyd protest Tuesday for the first time. “Being here is better than being at home feeling helpless.”With the White House in the background, a line of police forms behind a fence in Lafayette Park as demonstrators gather to protest the death of George Floyd, June 2, 2020, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)-Pastors at the church prayed with demonstrators and handed out water bottles. The crowd remained in place after the city’s 7 p.m. curfew passed, defying warnings that the response from law enforcement could be even more forceful. But the crowd Tuesday was peaceful, even polite. At one point, the crowd booed when a protester climbed a light post and took down a street sign. A chant went up: “Peaceful protest!”Trump, meanwhile, amplified his hard-line calls from Monday, when he threatened to send in the military to restore order if governors didn’t do it.“NYC, CALL UP THE NATIONAL GUARD,” he tweeted. “The lowlifes and losers are ripping you apart. Act fast!”Thousands of people remained in the streets of New York City Tuesday night, undeterred by an 8 p.m. curfew, though most streets were clear by early Wednesday other than police who were patrolling some areas. Midtown Manhattan was pocked with battered storefronts after Monday’s protests.Protesters kneel in Times Square in New York, June 2, 2020. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)-Protests also passed across the US, including in Los Angeles, Miami, St. Paul, Minnesota, Columbia, South Carolina and Houston, where the police chief talked to peaceful demonstrators, vowing reforms.“God as my witness, change is coming,” Art Acevedo said. “And we’re going to do it the right way.”More than 20,000 National Guard members have been called up in 29 states to deal with the violence. New York is not among them, and Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he does not want the Guard. On Tuesday, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo called what happened in the city “a disgrace.”“The NYPD and the mayor did not do their job last night,” Cuomo said at a briefing in Albany. He said the mayor underestimated the problem, and the nation’s largest police force was not deployed in sufficient numbers, though the city had said it doubled the usual police presence.George Floyd. (Christopher Harris via AP)-Tuesday marked the eighth straight night of the protests, which began after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck while the handcuffed black man called out that he couldn’t breathe. The officer, Derek Chauvin, has been fired and charged with murder. The mother of George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter, Gianna, said she wanted the world to know that her little girl lost a good father.“I want everybody to know that this is what those officers took,” Roxie Washington said during a Minneapolis news conference with her young daughter at her side. “I want justice for him because he was good. No matter what anybody thinks, he was good.”Some protesters framed the burgeoning movement as a necessity after a string of killings by police.“It feels like it’s just been an endless cascade of hashtags of black people dying, and it feels like nothing’s really being done by our political leaders to actually enact real change,” said Christine Ohenzuwa, 19, who attended a peaceful protest at the Minnesota state Capitol in St. Paul. “There’s always going to be a breaking point. I think right now, we’re seeing the breaking point around the country.”“I live in this state. It’s really painful to see what’s going on, but it’s also really important to understand that it’s connected to a system of racial violence,” she said.Ddemonstrators stand in front of Los Angeles City Hall during a protest over the death of George Floyd, June 2, 2020, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)-Meanwhile, governors and mayors, Republicans and Democrats alike, rejected Trump’s threat to send in the military, with some saying troops would be unnecessary and others questioning whether the government has such authority and warning that such a step would be dangerous.A senior White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the president is not rushing to send in the military and that his goal was to pressure governors to deploy more National Guard members.Such use of the military would mark a stunning federal intervention rarely seen in modern American history.Amid the protests, nine states and the District of Columbia held presidential primaries that tested the nation’s ability to run elections while balancing a pandemic and sweeping social unrest. Joe Biden won hundreds more delegates and was on the cusp of formally securing the Democratic presidential nomination. Also Tuesday, Minnesota opened an investigation into whether the Minneapolis Police Department has a pattern of discrimination against minorities.

Coronavirus pandemic is fast-tracking a health-tech revolution, expert says-The Times of Israel-Interview-The ‘floodgates are now open’ and regulators, patients and healthcare providers are all going with the flow, according to Yair Schindel of aMoon VC fundBy Shoshanna Solomon-june 3,20-Today, 12:42 pm

The coronavirus pandemic has fast tracked the merger of high tech with the health sector, leading to a health-tech revolution that will come about much faster than it would have otherwise, a venture capital fund expert said.“We have a new normal,” said Yair Schindel, managing partner and co-founder of aMoon, a global HealthTech VC fund based in Israel, in an interview with The Times of Israel. “The world has changed dramatically,”Schindel was part of a team of experts set up by the  Health Ministry to develop guidelines on minimizing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed over 377,000 people and infected over 6.3 million. In Israel the death toll from the virus has reached 289, with over 17,000 people infected. Thanks to the virus, the timeline of the ongoing health-tech revolution has now shortened “quite dramatically,” he said. “We will see changes happening significantly faster than we originally anticipated.”Dr. Yair Schindel co-founder and managing partner of VC fund aMoon (Tomer Jacobson)-This revolution is now happening on a number of fronts, he explained, the first one being the patients themselves. For many years everything that had to do with remote healthcare and telemedicine was difficult for many patients to accept, he said. They felt they needed the doctors to see them, to examine their lungs, their hearts, their throat.“All these things today, in the mind of the patient, are no longer a necessity,” he said. Not only do patients today accept being treated from afar, they actually prefer it in order to avoid the risk of catching something at the doctor’s office.Technologies that facilitate remote treatment have helped bridge this psychological gap for patients in general. “That is a huge step forward,” Schindel said. The “hospital room of the future,” built in the Israel Center for Medical Simulation at Sheba Medical Center (courtesy of Sheba Medical Center)-Earlier this month, Sheba Medical Center, at the forefront of Israel’s fight against COVID-19, unveiled what it called the “hospital of the future” – in which robots, AI and augmented reality do much of the work while doctors and nurses stay at a distance. Sheba has also utilized the Vici telemedicine system, a robot-like device that monitors patients’ vital signs.Other systems include Tytocare, which allows physicians to remotely examine patients using stethoscopes, thermometers, and lung monitoring, and EarlySense, for the real-time delivery of actionable data along with patient data management tools that allow physicians to pinpoint and prevent potentially serious medical situations before they escalate. Not only patients changed their frame of mind, said Schindel. Regulators, both in the US and Europe, “understand they have to move a lot faster,” he said.“Obviously, we don’t want to put patients at risk, but if we can accelerate the process of approval for things that are safe and efficacious, we should do that as soon as possible,” he said. That is especially true for digital therapeutics, when software programs are used to prevent, manage or treat medical disorders, or when platforms are created to help analyze medical data and provide insights to physicians.“For a while we didn’t know how fast it would go forward. Now it is basically a flood, and the floodgates are now open,” he said, referring to both technologies that are are being developed faster and regulatory approvals.Tyto Care has developed a device for on-demand, remote medical exams. The handheld examination device has attachments that can examine the heart, lungs, skin, ears, throat and abdomen, as well as measure body temperature (YouTube screenshot)-Healthcare providers, too, have realized they need to make more use of devices and technology to treat patients at home, rather sending them unnecessarily to already jam-packed hospitals.Lastly, said Schindel, the genomics revolution that is taking place — what he calls the study of “the barcode with which we came into the world” — will further get a boost by the coronavirus pandemic.“All the large pharma companies and academic institutions are trying to figure out who is influenced by COVID-19 and who isn’t,” he said. “Who will have a mild or more serious disease? Is it related to certain types of genes, or actually to certain types of proteins that some of us have or don’t?” All of these questions will help advance genomics research, he said.Magen David Adom medical workers at a drive-through site to collect samples for coronavirus testing in Jerusalem on May 30, 2020 (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Schindel, who was recruited by the director general of the Health Ministry to join the task force early in the crisis, said that he believes Israel deserves a “very high grade” in its effort to keep the virus at bay because it quickly took stringent steps, and because citizens are well versed in going into and out of emergency mode. The ability to “quickly adapt and transition from routine day to day to emergency mode is a huge advantage of the Israeli people,” he said.“Suppose we were not as responsive as we were; we would have ended up with numbers like some of these European countries,” he said. According to Statista, Israel has had 31.97 deaths per million inhabitants, compared to 821.92 per million in Belgium, 580.41 per million in Spain ,569.07 per million in the UK and 548.42 per million in Italy.“Let’s say we knew there was a risk of some terror attack that could cause the loss of 3,000 lives and maybe another 20,000 injured or sick, via bioterror. What would the country do? Would we be willing to endure a month of lockup to avoid something like that? I think the answer is yes.”Israel has eased lockdown measures as the virus spread slowed, but a resurgence of infections has raised the specter of renewed restrictions.

Israel’s security chiefs to meet on looming annexation amid fears of violence-The Times of Israel-IDF, Shin Bet chiefs and top commanders to weigh how to respond to possible Palestinian uprising or Jordan breaking off ties, with a month to go to July 1 target dateBy Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff-june 3,20-Today, 10:15 am

Security chiefs will convene Wednesday for a key discussion to prepare for various scenarios if parts of the West Bank are annexed next month, as currently planned.IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi will host Shin Bet chief Nadav Argaman and several senior IDF commanders and Shin Bet officials at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv for a first-of-its-kind meeting on the subject, Hebrew-language media reported.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted he will go ahead with plans to extend Israeli sovereignty to settlements and the Jordan Valley — some 30 percent of the West Bank — from July 1, though there are signs a short delay might be in the offing. That gives the military a month to complete preparations for a move that many defense analysts and officials have warned could lead to an outbreak of Palestinian violence, as well as threaten Jerusalem’s ties with its neighbor Jordan and other Arab countries. The preparations, given the code name “Shahar Beharim” (Dawn in the mountains) are clouded not only by limited knowledge of what Palestinians might be planning in response to an annexation announcement, but also by lack of information on what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government intends to announce. The discussion will focus on the different scenarios that may follow an Israeli move to annex, from so-called lone wolf attacks by Palestinians and protests, to mass riots, a full-blown third intifada — or uprising — or even an extreme option of the severance of all ties with Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. The security chiefs will also discuss possible ramifications such an escalation could have on other fronts, particularly the Gaza Strip.Israeli soldiers stand guard near the scene of an apparent attempted car-ramming attack by the West Bank settlement of Halamish on May 29, 2020. (Abbas Momani/AFP)-Defense analysts have warned of a potential outbreak of violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in response to Israeli annexation efforts.Ahead of the move, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said his security forces were cutting ties with the Israeli military, a claim that has since proven to be overstated, as some degree of coordination has continued despite the dramatic announcement, though to a lesser extent than normal.Jordan, with which Israel has its longest border, has threatened to review its relationship with Jerusalem, if the Jewish state goes ahead with the controversial plans. On Tuesday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned of “fiercer conflict” if annexation moves ahead.European countries, as well as Arab nations with which Israel does not have formal ties, have also warned Israel against the consequences of annexation.Israel’s military preparations have been going on for months and have included special training, preparing equipment and weapons, and tightening the military’s coordination with the Shin Bet and the Israel Police. They also include an examination of what body would be in charge of each area in the event of annexation, which would likely transfer some authority currently held by the Defense Ministry to civilian bodies. On Monday, Defense Minister Benny Gantz ordered Kohavi to “step up preparations for the Israel Defense Forces,” his office said, after a meeting with US Ambassador David Friedman.Gantz himself is believed to oppose unilateral annexation, but his coalition deal with Netanyahu allows the latter to push forward with the plan from July 1, so long as he can secure approval from the Knesset — where he is almost guaranteed a majority — and from the United States. However, the US approval depends on the completion of a mapping process being carried out by a joint Israeli-US team, and a source has told The Times of Israel that it is “highly unlikely” that the process will be done by July 1. The source said it could be delayed by weeks or even months.Netanyahu initially promised in January that annexation would take place in a matter of days, but has repeatedly been forced to temper expectations.Though the military had already been preparing for potential unrest in response to the move, until Gantz’s meeting with Kohavi on Monday the IDF was doing so without having much specific information about the government’s intentions, aspects of which still remain undecided. In his statement, the defense minister did not explicitly refer to annexation, but ordered Kohavi to “step up preparations for the IDF ahead of diplomatic efforts on the agenda in the Palestinian arena.”A Palestinian rioter hurls a rock during clashes with Israeli security forces following a protest in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on January 29, 2020. (Musa AL SHAER / AFP)-“The defense minister also updated the chief of staff on advancements on the diplomatic front,” a spokesperson said, without elaborating.Gantz said he also plans to appoint a point-person to coordinate between the different government bodies involved in the process.“A joint team will be formed that will bring together recommendations — on an operational level — for the efforts that are on the agenda for the West Bank and Gaza Strip,” his office said. The move would be coordinated with the United States, in accordance with a Middle East plan US President Donald Trump unveiled in January, which endorsed extending Israeli sovereignty over these parts of the West Bank. While the plan calls for peace talks and envisions a Palestinian state on the rest of the West Bank, the entire proposal has been rejected by the Palestinian Authority, which seeks the West Bank as territory for a future Palestinian state. The government’s exact plans of when and where it intends to extend sovereignty have yet to be released and are still being discussed by the joint Israeli-US committee that is tasked with mapping the exact territory to be annexed and the status of each piece of land.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a press conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, September 10, 2019. Netanyahu vowed to annex the Jordan Valley and, later, all West Bank settlements if he were to win national elections. (AP Photo/Oded Balilty)-Last week, Netanyahu told government ministers that he planned to extend Israeli sovereignty to portions of the West Bank at some point in July.Ze’ev Elkin, a member of the top-level security cabinet, said an exact date had not yet been set because of the ongoing efforts of the joint mapping committee.“I know they’re working on the map, and that process could take some more time,” Elkin told Army Radio on Sunday. “July 1 is the first day when the matter can be brought to the cabinet and the Knesset. It could possibly take a few more days or weeks, but generally I think the prime minister is very clear that he intends to advance this.”Elkin said there were many signs that the mapping would be done by “sometime in July.”

Breaking China: A rupture looms between Israel and the United States-The Times of Israel-Analysis-As an American-Chinese power struggle ramps up, the Jewish state increasingly feels the fallout with US pressure to nix deals it deems detrimental to its security interests-By Ron Kampeas-JUNE 3,20-Today, 1:12 pm

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Israel’s announcement last week that an Israeli consortium would build Sorek 2, the world’s largest desalination plant, surprised many who had been watching the deal: The contract had been expected to go to a Hong Kong-based company. But that was before the Trump administration ramped up pressure on Israel to diminish its ties to China. For years, Israel has been working to dramatically expand trade with China, one of the world’s largest markets. That push is suddenly running up against strong opposition from the White House, as the Trump administration pivots from the decades-old policy of increasing US engagement with China to treating the country as an increasingly bitter rival. The Sorek 2 deal was widely seen as a bow to pressure from the Trump administration, which is pushing Israel and other key allies to curtail trade with China. But observers of this deepening dynamic say it may not be enough to head off a US-Israel crisis over China.A Chinese company, SIPG, is building a major port in Haifa and will control it for 25 years. The Trump administration, according to multiple insiders, wants Israel to roll back at least part of that deal. The Israelis consider it a done deal, even if they may have regrets over it.“It’s a bit of a shock to the system,” Jonathan Schanzer, the vice president of a think tank, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, that has close ties with the Trump administration and with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said of the looming crisis. “We had been hearing from the administration officials and even some Israeli diplomats about some of the complications arising from the intensification of the great power competition between the US and China.”Illustrative: Shipping containers at the Haifa port. November 14, 2011. (Yaakov Naumi/Flash90.)-In mid-May, the Trump administration unveiled a 16-page revised approach for relating to China amid American fury with the Chinese for obfuscating the origins of the coronavirus and failing to contain the pandemic. The US has not publicly spelled out potential consequences for countries that do not go along with its anti-China push. But those with ties to both the Israeli and US government said there is a real risk of diminished security cooperation if Israel does not accede to American pressure to stringently review any commercial deals with China and nix those that might impinge on Israeli and US security interests.Doug Feith, a top Pentagon official under President George W. Bush who helped resolve the last US-Israel crisis over China — over Israel’s weapons sales to China in the mid-2000s — said the Trump administration was poised to act unless Israel took steps to alleviate US concerns.Feith pointed to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s brief trip to Israel in mid-May — only his second visit abroad since the coronavirus pandemic shut down the United States — to make sure Jerusalem got the message. During his one-day visit, Pompeo openly accused China of “obfuscating” and “hiding” information related to the pandemic. (China’s ambassador to Israel responded by calling the accusations “absurd,” saying China “has never covered up the outbreak.” He died of an apparent heart attack in his apartment in Israel less than a week later.)Former US undersecretary of defense for policy Doug Feith. (Public domain)-Pompeo had warned Israel earlier in the month “that further Israeli economic linkage with China will hurt relations with the US,” Feith, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, wrote in a May 15 Wall Street Journal op-ed.In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Feith said he learned of Pompeo’s warning from Israeli and American officials. (Requests for comment from the State Department and from Israel’s embassy here were not returned.)-Israel is not alone, Feith said, noting similar recent warnings issued by Trump administration officials to Britain and Australia.“What the government is saying is that it applies to Israel in the same way that it would apply to other countries, including very close friends,” he said. Those warnings could rupture the close relationship between President Donald Trump and Netanyahu, who have been joined at the hip on policy and politics, ranging from Israel’s claims to territories won in the 1967 Six-Day War, to heightening confrontation with Iran, to disdain for the Democratic Party’s left wing.“This administration likely feels particularly empowered to have tachlis discussions with Israel about limitations since it [rightly] views itself as having provided Netanyahu and the last government with wall-to-wall support,” said Scott Lasensky, a visiting professor at the University of Maryland and an adviser on Israel policy to the Obama administration.A resolution to the crisis could sink in Haifa’s port-The biggest deal Israel has signed with a Chinese company was in December: The Shanghai International Port Group, or SIPG, is to build and operate a port in Haifa for 25 years. The agreement followed years of negotiations. The Trump administration wants controls in place to limit Chinese malfeasance, if not a complete abrogation of the deal. Breaking the contract is unlikely, as Israel does not want to risk alienating its trade relationship with China. Those ties, according to an analysis last year by the Rand Corp., a think tank that advises the Pentagon, was worth $8 billion in Chinese exports to Israel and $3 billion in Israeli exports to China in 2016.Illustrative: Shipping containers at the Haifa port. November 14, 2011. (photo credit: Yaakov Nahumi/Flash90)-Netanyahu has made his cultivation of ties with China a feather in his cap, and China has already warned Israel against acquiescing to “US bullying.”SIPG’s control of the port allows the Chinese intelligence-gathering proximity to Israeli naval bases, and to information that flows from the port, as well as the ability to frustrate access in an emergency.“Ports are high-tech,” Gary Roughead, a retired US Navy admiral who last year co-authored with Feith a Hudson Institute report on US-Israel cooperation in the eastern Mediterranean, said in an interview. Port operators “have control systems and the data that goes with it.”Roughead said that could give China eyes into Israeli-US communications and, more broadly, into Israel’s military, which would raise concerns for its allies.“It would be important to know, do [Israel’s] security services have access to the port to monitor for the capabilities that are focused on your naval base, is that allowed, or does Shanghai say, ‘No, you can’t sweep the port, or peer into the types of activity or intercept the communications,’” he said.Cranes at Haifa’s port (photo credit: Moshe Shai/Flash90)-Other concerns Roughead noted: US military vessels that stop in Haifa for servicing and whether China would be able to intervene in US assistance to Israel during a military crisis.Feith said that Israeli officials have endeavored to reassure Americans that they have checks in place at the port, but the Americans remain wary.Shaul Chorev, a retired rear admiral in the Israeli Navy and a co-author with Feith and Roughead of the Hudson Institute report, said the port deal was a mistake on national security grounds, but Israel was not about to substantially retreat.“If Israel goes to China and says let’s roll back, we will lose face, we will lose our economic relations,” said Chorev, who directs the Haifa Research Center for Maritime Policy and Strategy. The crisis has come on suddenly-Until around 2018, few in Israel or the United States saw this crisis coming. Dealing with China, with its deep pockets and resources, had been a no-brainer across the planet for years. Its Belt and Road initiative, bringing infrastructure on the cheap to developing countries, is transforming Africa. But then some critics began to claim that Chinese information technology companies were allowing China’s government to spy on countries that use their cellular technology. And Beijing also began facing claims that it was using Belt and Road to squeeze diplomatic concessions from participating countries. In 2018, Trump administration officials began to aggressively warn allies against deals with China. Lawmakers from both parties have issued similar warnings.Former US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro attends at a farewell session at the Knesset ahead of his departure from the role on January 17, 2017. (Miriam Alster/Flash90)-Those concerns were simply not on anyone’s radar in 2015, said Daniel Shapiro, then the US ambassador to Israel. Yisrael Katz, then Israel’s transportation minister, approached Shapiro seeking US contractors to redo Haifa’s port. That never eventuated, in part because the project was seen as too small by US contractors, so Israel turned to the Shanghai International Port Group.“They went ahead with their process, they signed a deal with the firm,” Shapiro said. “No one in the US government — not in the Navy, not in the Defense Department — called me and said ‘Hey, we have a problem.’”A renewed process to vet Israel’s international deals-Last year, Israel launched a foreign investment review board at the behest of John Bolton, then Trump’s national security adviser and one of Israel’s closest-ever friends in US government. The goal of the board is to ensure that agreements are vetted with national security concerns in mind — and avoid a situation like the Haifa port deal, where negotiations took place for several years, yet parts of Israel’s security establishment were caught off-guard by the agreement. The review board is seen as feckless and ineffectual, in part because it was formed under Israel’s interim government and lacked a mandate. Now that Netanyahu has set up a government, the Americans expect him to strengthen the mechanism.Illustrative: US President Donald Trump speaks during a roundtable discussion on the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act at the White House on August 23, 2018. (AFP Photo/Mandel Ngan)-“The first thing that Israel should do for its own sake, even if America and China were not on this collision path, is to have a real foreign investment screening mechanism,” said Shira Efron, a visiting fellow at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies who co-authored the 2019 Rand report.Efron said the mechanism should be legislated — the committee last year was a Cabinet decision — which would give it the power to compel compliance. Its scope should be extended to the technological sector, she said, and it should be an independent entity. The Israeli government should make clear that strengthening the mechanism is in Israel’s interest and not at the behest of the United States, Efron added.“If it’s in response to US pressure, it’s insulting to China,” she said. It’s not about 5G-Trump administration officials have formally warned Britain and Australia that allowing Huawei, the Chinese communications giant, to help establish 5G communications networks in their countries would adversely affect intelligence sharing. The US, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network.Democrats and Republicans alike see Chinese communications companies as arms of China’s intelligence network.Illustrative: A police robot mounted with surveillance cameras watches people walking past a 5G network advertisement in a shopping district in Beijing, Wednesday, May 15, 2019. (AP/Andy Wong)-There were concerns last year that Israel was considering similar contracts, but Israel has put them to rest, said a March report by Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies.“In view of the absence of Chinese technology from previous generations of communications infrastructure in Israel, and despite the lack of clear official announcements by the Israeli government on the matter, the likelihood of its 5G infrastructure being built with Chinese technology is low to nonexistent,” the report said. But there’s a lot more to talk about-China has been building infrastructure in Israel since at least 2007, when the China Civil Engineering Construction Corp. brought in 300 workers to build the tunnel system linking the southern entrance to Haifa with the suburbs to the city’s north. That success has led to a thirst for Chinese construction, and there was talk of China building new rail links in Israel. China’s Bright Food Group owns a controlling stake in Tnuva, Israel’s preeminent dairy.Decoupling from China won’t be easy. And China appears prepared to place its own pressure on Israel. After Pompeo’s visit last month, the Chinese embassy’s spokesman declared that his country trusted that its “Jewish friends are not only able to defeat the coronavirus but also the ‘political virus,’ and choose the course of action that best serves their interests.”Illustrative: A view of the Sorek A Desalination Plant, November 22, 2018. (Isaac Harari/Flash90)-Still, Israel’s willingness last week to cut China out of the Sorek 2 desalination deal shows it is ready to roll back engagement on some fronts. The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies released a paper last month outlining how to avert a deeper crisis. Its recommendation: “The United States should work with Israel and other allies to facilitate alternatives to help Israel pivot away from China.“Other Indo-Pacific countries, such as Japan, Canada, India, Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan, already invest in Israel and may be eager to increase their engagement to replace Chinese investment,” the paper said. There are other spheres in which Israel will be under US pressure to apply greater scrutiny, including Chinese investment in Israel’s high-tech sector, said Vance Serchuk, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and once a foreign policy adviser to former US Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.“In many cases on the surface, the companies that are working in these areas are not primarily focused on military applications, but the capabilities themselves have the potential to be leveraged for strategic impact,” Serchuk said. “Both Israelis and Americans agree that Israeli capabilities should never be leveraged or weaponized against the United States, but figuring out exactly what that means is very tricky.”

OZONE DEPLETION JUDGEMENT ON THE EARTH DUE TO SIN

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Cyclone spares India's business capital from major damage-[Associated Press]-RAFIQ MAQBOOL, EMILY SCHMALL and ANIRUDDHA GHOSAL-June 3, 2020

MUMBAI, India (AP) — The first cyclone in more than a century to hit India's financial capital of Mumbai appeared to have largely spared the metropolis on Wednesday. No deaths or major damages were reported as workers began clearing fallen trees and other debris from affected areas along India's western coastline. As Cyclone Nisarga crossed the central state of Maharashtra, live TV coverage showed inky black clouds framing the Arabian Sea, and trees swaying wildly as rain pounded coastal towns and villages. In the state capital, Mumbai, home to Bollywood, India's largest stock exchange and more than 18 million residents, high winds whipped skyscrapers and ripped apart shanties near the beach.About 10,000 city residents were evacuated from their homes, municipal officials said. With powerful storms a rarity, there were no preexisting cyclone shelters, and many of the city's large and sturdy buildings have already been converted into coronavirus isolation or treatment facilities, National Disaster Response Force spokesman Krishan Kumar said."We moved people to other strong buildings where there is a supply of water,” he said.Such storms are less common in the Arabian Sea than on India’s east coast, and usually form later in the year. But Nisarga may represent ways in which the warming of oceans due to climate change is already altering lives, experts said.In the hours before the storm hit India's shores, drivers and peddlers deserted Mumbai's iconic Marine Drive, fishermen yanked their nets out of the wavy Arabian Sea and police shooed people away from beaches.Homes in city slums were boarded up and abandoned, and officials patrolled the streets, using bullhorns to order people to stay inside.Nisarga brought heavy rain and sustained winds of 100 to 110 kilometers (62 to 68 miles) per hour through Wednesday afternoon after slamming ashore near the city of Alibag, about 98 kilometers (60 miles) south of Mumbai, the Meteorological Department said.In Alibag, photos posted on Twitter by the disaster agency showed toppled carts, fallen trees scattered over roads and tin roofs ripped apart.Alibag absorbed some of the storm's power, reducing its impact on Mumbai, said Madhavan Rajeevan, secretary at the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The storm moved away from the city across Maharashtra state with its wind speed slowing to 85 kilometers (52 miles) per hour.Ahead of the storm, about 100,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas in Maharashtra and neighboring Gujarat. Both states, already among the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, activated disaster response teams, fearing extensive flooding could further impair overwhelmed health systems.“If hospitals and clinics are damaged by the cyclone, the city won’t be able to cope with the large number of COVID-19 cases, and social distancing measures will become virtually impossible to follow,” Bidisha Pillai, chief executive of Save the Children in India, said in a statement.About 200 COVID-19 patients in Mumbai were moved from a field hospital beneath a tent to another facility to avoid the risk of strong winds, officials said.S.N. Pradhan, director of India's National Disaster Response Force, said social distancing norms were being followed in evacuation shelters.“Let us fight this danger like we are standing up to the corona pandemic and are on our way to defeat it. Likewise, we will prevail over this situation too!” Maharashtra's top official, Chief Minister Uddhav Balasheb Thackeray, tweeted.Maharashtra, which accounts for more than a third of India's coronavirus cases, has seen the rate of infection slow in recent days, below India's national average.Officials in Mumbai and also in the central government in New Delhi have pinned hopes of an economic turnaround on a dramatic ease of restrictions this week after nine weeks of lockdown. India has reported more than 200,000 cases and 5,800 deaths due to the virus, and epidemiologists predict that the peak is still weeks away.Nisarga comes just two weeks after Cyclone Amphan tore through the Bay of Bengal on India’s east coast and battered West Bengal state, killing more than 100 people in India and neighboring Bangladesh. The frequency of cyclones in the Arabian Sea is predicted to increase, said Adam Sobel, a climate scientist at Columbia University. The temperature of the top layer of the sea, from which the cyclone draws its energy, is “unusually high,” said K.J. Ramesh, former chief of India’s Meteorological Department. Much more frequent and intense cyclones have been appearing over a shorter time in recent years due to climate change, he said.“Forecasting such storms becomes a challenge,” he said.___Schmall and Ghosal reported from New Delhi. SpaceX captures the flag, beating Boeing in cosmic contest-[The Canadian Press]-June 3, 2020

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The first astronauts launched by SpaceX declared victory Monday in NASA’s cosmic capture-the-flag game. They quickly claimed the prize left behind at the International Space Station nearly a decade ago by the last crew to launch from the U.S.“Congratulations, SpaceX, you got the flag,” NASA astronaut Doug Hurley said a day after arriving at the space station.Hurley showed off the small U.S. flag during a news conference and again in a linkup with SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California."You can bet we will take it with us when we depart back to Earth,” said Hurley, floating alongside Dragon crewmate Bob Behnken. The flag flew on the first space shuttle flight in 1981 and the final one in 2011. Hurley was on that last shuttle crew. The flag was an added incentive for Elon Musk's SpaceX company and Boeing, competing to be the first private company to launch a crew to the space station. Saturday’s liftoff of NASA astronauts was the first from the U.S. in nine years. Boeing's first astronaut flight isn’t expected until next year. The crew will include Chris Ferguson, commander of the last shuttle flight who now works for Boeing.“Proud to yield the title of “The last commander of an American launched spacecraft” to @Astro_Doug who, with @AstroBehnken, has returned US to space from KSC after 3,252 days. Well done,” Ferguson tweeted following the SpaceX liftoff. An estimated 100,000 people — suppliers, vendors, engineers, etc. — were responsible for Saturday's flawless launch of test pilots Hurley and Behnken aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center. The Dragon capsule, also built and owned by SpaceX, docked at the space station Sunday.“It’s awe-inspiring for all of us,” SpaceX manager Benji Reed told the astronauts from Hawthorne.Reed asked them about the Falcon ride. Hurley said he could feel when the rocket went transonic and broke the sound barrier. The final push to orbit, on the second stage, was full of vibrations and felt like "driving fast, very fast on a gravel road," he said. The astronauts instantly went from pulling more than three G's — more than three times the force of Earth's gravity — to zero gravity as soon as they reached orbit.“Sounds like the ultimate ride in a Batmobile with the jet engine turned on,” Reed said.Behnken said one of the first things he did upon reaching the orbiting lab was call his 6-year-old son, Theo, to hear what is was like to watch his father blast into space “and share that a little bit with him while it was still fresh in his mind."Hurley and Behnken spent Monday making sure their docked Dragon is ready to make an emergency getaway, if necessary. The capsule will serve as their lifeboat during their space station visit. They joined three station residents — an American and two Russians.NASA will decide in the coming weeks how long to keep the pair there. Their mission could last anywhere from one to four months. The timing will depend on Dragon checkouts in orbit and launch preparations for the company's next astronaut flight, currently targeted for the end of August. With so much uncertainty and so many variables, Behnken said it was a little hard explaining to his son when he'd back.“From his perspective, he's just excited that we're going to get a dog when I get home,” Behnken said with a smile.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education.
