High-level Israeli and Jordanian officials held talks Wednesday evening in an effort to end the conflict over a contested religious area on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.The longstanding closure of an area near the Golden Gate has ignited tensions between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli police in recent weeks. Worshipers have forced it open and entered on several occasions.Jordan oversees the Waqf, the Islamic custodians of the Temple Mount.The Israeli team was led by the head of the Israel National Security Council, Meir Ben-Shabbat, Haaretz reported.Earlier in the day, junior officials from both sides held talks, during which Jordan offered that the site be closed for long-term renovations. While the Israelis agreed, they insisted it must first be closed without renovations taking place, as a statement of Israeli authority. This disagreement reportedly led to talks breaking down.According to the report, another meeting between the head of the Waqf and the Israel Police commander for the Jerusalem District was canceled after the Waqf official received threats from extremist Palestinians who accused him of capitulating to Israel.The cancellation of the meeting and the failed talks between junior officials led to the higher-level contacts later Wednesday.Authorities are concerned that prayers at the Temple Mount on Friday, the busiest day of the week, could devolve into violent clashes over the dispute.On Tuesday the Waqf rejected an Israeli court order to close the disputed area, which abuts the gate on the inside of the Temple Mount compound. Sheikh Abdelazeem Salhab, chairman of the Waqf Council, said that the area would “remain open for Muslims to pray,” despite Israel’s ultimatum to close the site by next Monday.The area inside the Golden Gate, or Gate of Mercy, was sealed off by Israeli authorities in 2003 because the group managing the place had ties to Hamas, and it has been kept closed to stop illegal construction work there by the Islamic Waqf. The actual Golden Gate, which is a fortified gateway in the retaining wall surrounding the Temple Mount, has been bricked up for nearly 500 years.Israeli officials believe the work carried out by the Waqf, which refused to allow any Israeli observers, led to the destruction of antiquities from periods of Jewish presence in the area.Last month the Waqf reopened the site and Palestinian worshipers have begun to use it as a mosque, despite Israeli attempts to keep the area sealed.The Waqf has repeatedly challenged the closure, convening and staging prayer-protests in the area that often erupted into clashes with police.The Temple Mount, the holiest site to Jews, is referred to as the Noble Sanctuary by Muslims, who consider it the third-holiest place in Islam. (Reuters) - A federal judge in Los Angeles on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit brought by adult-film actress Stormy Daniels to end a hush-money agreement she had with U.S. President Donald Trump, court papers showed.U.S. District Judge James Otero dismissed the lawsuit because Trump and his former lawyer Michael Cohen have agreed not to enforce the nondisclosure agreement against Daniels, court documents showed."The Court specifically found that Stormy received everything she asked for in the lawsuit - she won," said Daniels' attorney, Michael Avenatti, in a Twitter post.Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, filed a lawsuit in March 2018 to rescind a nondisclosure agreement that kept her from discussing her alleged 2006 sexual relationship with Trump in the final weeks before the 2016 U.S. presidential election.Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels.Cohen has said the agreement, under which Daniels was paid $130,000, was struck to help Trump capture the White House.In his ruling, Otero sent the lawsuit back to California Superior Court, essentially ending the case. GRIMSBY, England (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May urged the European Union on Friday to make "just one more push" to break the Brexit deadlock but proposals from the bloc's chief negotiator fell short of anything that would win over the British parliament.Three weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU, May has failed so far to get the changes to her divorce deal that she believes would gain the support of lawmakers, who handed the government a defeat of record proportions in January.In a last-ditch appeal to the EU and to lawmakers at home, May said in a speech it was time to end the uncertainty over Brexit and for parliament to approve the deal on Tuesday.Under pressure from some lawmakers in her own Conservative Party, May has sought legally binding assurances from the EU that Britain will not be trapped permanently in the so-called Northern Irish backstop, an insurance policy aimed at preventing the return of border controls between Northern Ireland and Ireland.After she spoke, chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier announced he was ready to give Britain the unilateral right to leave the bloc's customs union.But he said London would need to honor its commitment to keep the Irish border free of controls, potentially leaving Northern Ireland subject to EU rules, with a "border" in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the island of Britain.That requirement has been rejected previously by London and would be particularly unpalatable to Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, which props up May's minority government in parliament and opposes any proposals for Northern Ireland to have different rules from the rest of the United Kingdom.Stephen Barclay, Britain's Brexit minister, said it was "not the time to rerun old arguments. Israeli troops on Thursday razed the home of a suspected Palestinian terrorist accused of carrying out two deadly West Bank shooting attacks in December, the military said.In a predawn operation, Israeli security forces entered the West Bank town of Kobar, near Ramallah, and used a backhoe to demolish the two-story home of Asem Barghouti.Barghouti was arrested in January and accused of carrying out a shooting attack on a bus stop near the outpost of Givat Assaf on December 13 and of assisting his brother Salih in a shooting attack on a bus stop near the Ofra settlement on December 9.Two soldiers, Sgt. Yosef Cohen and Staff Sgt. Yovel Mor Yosef, were killed in the Givat Assaf attack. Another soldier, Israeli-American Netanel Felber, was seriously injured and Shira Sabag, a civilian woman was also hurt in the shooting.Seven people were injured in the Ofra attack, including a seven-months pregnant woman who was seriously wounded and whose baby died several days later after doctors were forced to deliver it prematurely due to her injuries.“This morning, soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces working with the Border Police and Defense Ministry’s Civil Administration, demolished the home in which the terrorist Asem Barghouti lived in the village of Kobar,” the army said in a statement.Salih, also from Kobar, was killed by Israeli troops during his attempted arrest on December 12.The demolition comes days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israeli authorities to step up efforts to raze the homes of the terrorists, after taking heat from the right over a lack of action.“I gave an instruction to speed up the demolition of these homes within the parameters of the legal system,” he said Monday.Barghouti’s arrest followed a nearly month-long manhunt.On January 20, the military notified Barghouti’s family of its plans to destroy his home in Kobar. The family appealed the decision to the High Court of Justice, but the judges upheld the IDF’s plan to demolish the house.In addition, the IDF in February said it informed the Barghouti family of its intention to demolish the apartment where Asem’s late brother Salih lived.Though controversial, Israeli authorities defend home demolitions as a deterrent against future terror attacks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday accused Iran of secretly smuggling oil to get past economic sanctions, and called on the international community to take action against the activity.“Iran is trying to bypass the sanctions on it through the covert smuggling of petroleum via the sea,” the prime minister said at a graduation ceremony for an Israeli Navy cadets course, held at the Haifa naval base. “As these attempts expand, the navy will have a more important role in efforts to block these Iranian actions.“I call on the international community to halt, by any means, Iran’s attempts to bypass the sanctions via the sea,” Netanyahu said.Israel, he added, constantly carries out sea-based operations against its enemies, “most of [which] are unknown.”Last May the US pulled out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal that saw stiff economic sanctions on Iran lifted in return for the dismantling of the weapons-capable elements of its nuclear development program. Worshipers have forced it open and entered on several occasions.Jordan oversees the Waqf, the Islamic custodians of the Temple Mount.The Israeli team was led by the head of the Israel National Security Council, Meir Ben-Shabbat, Haaretz reported.Earlier in the day, junior officials from both sides held talks, during which Jordan offered that the site be closed for long-term renovations. (Reuters) - A federal judge in Los Angeles on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit brought by adult-film actress Stormy Daniels to end a hush-money agreement she had with U.S. President Donald Trump, court papers showed.U.S. District Judge James Otero dismissed the lawsuit because Trump and his former lawyer Michael Cohen have agreed not to enforce the nondisclosure agreement against Daniels, court documents showed."The Court specifically found that Stormy received everything she asked for in the lawsuit - she won," said Daniels' attorney, Michael Avenatti, in a Twitter post.Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, filed a lawsuit in March 2018 to rescind a nondisclosure agreement that kept her from discussing her alleged 2006 sexual relationship with Trump in the final weeks before the 2016 U.S. presidential election.Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels.Cohen has said the agreement, under which Daniels was paid $130,000, was struck to help Trump capture the White House.In his ruling, Otero sent the lawsuit back to California Superior Court, essentially ending the case. GRIMSBY, England (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May urged the European Union on Friday to make "just one more push" to break the Brexit deadlock but proposals from the bloc's chief negotiator fell short of anything that would win over the British parliament.Three weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU, May has failed so far to get the changes to her divorce deal that she believes would gain the support of lawmakers, who handed the government a defeat of record proportions in January.In a last-ditch appeal to the EU and to lawmakers at home, May said in a speech it was time to end the uncertainty over Brexit and for parliament to approve the deal on Tuesday.Under pressure from some lawmakers in her own Conservative Party, May has sought legally binding assurances from the EU that Britain will not be trapped permanently in the so-called Northern Irish backstop, an insurance policy aimed at preventing the return of border controls between Northern Ireland and Ireland.After she spoke, chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier announced he was ready to give Britain the unilateral right to leave the bloc's customs union.But he said London would need to honor its commitment to keep the Irish border free of controls, potentially leaving Northern Ireland subject to EU rules, with a "border" in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the island of Britain.That requirement has been rejected previously by London and would be particularly unpalatable to Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, which props up May's minority government in parliament and opposes any proposals for Northern Ireland to have different rules from the rest of the United Kingdom.Stephen Barclay, Britain's Brexit minister, said it was "not the time to rerun old arguments. Israeli troops on Thursday razed the home of a suspected Palestinian terrorist accused of carrying out two deadly West Bank shooting attacks in December, the military said.In a predawn operation, Israeli security forces entered the West Bank town of Kobar, near Ramallah, and used a backhoe to demolish the two-story home of Asem Barghouti.Barghouti was arrested in January and accused of carrying out a shooting attack on a bus stop near the outpost of Givat Assaf on December 13 and of assisting his brother Salih in a shooting attack on a bus stop near the Ofra settlement on December 9.Two soldiers, Sgt. Yosef Cohen and Staff Sgt. Yovel Mor Yosef, were killed in the Givat Assaf attack. Another soldier, Israeli-American Netanel Felber, was seriously injured and Shira Sabag, a civilian woman was also hurt in the shooting.Seven people were injured in the Ofra attack, including a seven-months pregnant woman who was seriously wounded and whose baby died several days later after doctors were forced to deliver it prematurely due to her injuries.“This morning, soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces working with the Border Police and Defense Ministry’s Civil Administration, demolished the home in which the terrorist Asem Barghouti lived in the village of Kobar,” the army said in a statement.Salih, also from Kobar, was killed by Israeli troops during his attempted arrest on December 12.The demolition comes days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israeli authorities to step up efforts to raze the homes of the terrorists, after taking heat from the right over a lack of action.“I gave an instruction to speed up the demolition of these homes within the parameters of the legal system,” he said Monday.Barghouti’s arrest followed a nearly month-long manhunt.On January 20, the military notified Barghouti’s family of its plans to destroy his home in Kobar. The family appealed the decision to the High Court of Justice, but the judges upheld the IDF’s plan to demolish the house.In addition, the IDF in February said it informed the Barghouti family of its intention to demolish the apartment where Asem’s late brother Salih lived.Though controversial, Israeli authorities defend home demolitions as a deterrent against future terror attacks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday accused Iran of secretly smuggling oil to get past economic sanctions, and called on the international community to take action against the activity.“Iran is trying to bypass the sanctions on it through the covert smuggling of petroleum via the sea,” the prime minister said at a graduation ceremony for an Israeli Navy cadets course, held at the Haifa naval base. “As these attempts expand, the navy will have a more important role in efforts to block these Iranian actions.“I call on the international community to halt, by any means, Iran’s attempts to bypass the sanctions via the sea,” Netanyahu said.Israel, he added, constantly carries out sea-based operations against its enemies, “most of [which] are unknown.”Last May the US pulled out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal that saw stiff economic sanctions on Iran lifted in return for the dismantling of the weapons-capable elements of its nuclear development program. Israeli warplanes bombed a Hamas naval post in the Gaza Strip early Thursday, hours after a mortar shell was fired from the Palestinian enclave at southern Israel, the army said.“Fighter jets and aircraft struck several military targets in a Hamas compound in the southern Gaza Strip,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.Palestinian media reported that the target was a Hamas naval commando base. A Palestinian security source confirmed a Hamas base was struck, causing damage but no injuries. The Hamas-linked Shehab news site said the site was northwest of Khan Younis.The strike came as Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry announced that a 15-year-old boy had succumbed to wounds sustained during clashes with Israeli forces at the border fence Wednesday night.The army said the strike, at about 1:30 a.m. was in response to a projectile fired from the Palestinian enclave and an explosives-laden balloons launched at Israel Wednesday night.Hours earlier the army said that it had fired an Iron Dome air defense missile in response to the incoming mortar shell from the Strip.It was not clear the projectile from Gaza had been intercepted or where it landed. WASHINGTON — Iranian hackers working to penetrate systems, businesses and governments around the world have caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, a report said Wednesday.Researchers for tech giant Microsoft said the attackers stole secrets and wiped data from computer networks after targeting thousands of people at some 200 companies over the past two years, according to The Wall Street Journal.Microsoft did not immediately respond to an AFP query on the report.The Journal said Microsoft traced the attacks to Holmium, a group linked to Iran, and that some of the hacking was done for Holmium by another Iranian group known as APT33.John Lambert, the head of Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Center, told the newspaper the attacks were “massively destabilizing events.”The report said the hackers notably targeted oil-and-gas companies, heavy-machinery manufacturers and international conglomerates in Saudi Arabia, Germany, Britain, India and the United States.In 2017, the security firm FireEye blamed APT33 for destructive malware that targeted organizations in the Middle East and elsewhere.The news comes with Iran, according to security experts, seeking to step up its cyber capabilities amid increasing efforts by the United States to isolate the Islamic regime.

EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - Huddled against a border fence on a bitterly cold morning in El Paso, Texas, a group of 60 Guatemalan migrants, around half toddlers and children, shouted for help: "We're cold, we're hungry, we need shelter."The group was trying to surrender to U.S. Border Patrol agents and claim asylum, but the agents were too busy herding other groups along the fence that stands about 100 yards (91 m) inside U.S. territory.The 18-foot-high (5.5 meters) steel barrier is meant to deter illegal immigration. But its position inside the border has turned it into a destination for human smugglers trafficking large groups of asylum seekers fleeing poverty and violence.The smugglers in recent weeks have shifted routes to El Paso from the remote Antelope Wells area of New Mexico, Border Patrol supervisory agent Joe Romero said.Once undocumented migrants are on U.S. soil, the Border Patrol is obliged to arrest them for entering illegally. But migrants can claim fear of returning to their countries, allowing them to remain in the United States legally until an asylum hearing, which can take months or years.The smugglers' strategy exploits a weakness in the very border wall President Donald Trump has touted as a means to protect the United States from undocumented immigrants and illicit drugs.The crowds in El Paso illustrate changing immigration patterns. He said he had seen "unbelievable" destruction from the air, too.The president and first lady were also due to visit a disaster relief center at a church in Opelika, the county seat, to meet with survivors, volunteers, and first responders.Sunday's tornadoes were the deadliest to hit the state since 2013. All 23 victims, including four children and seven members of one family, were killed in or around Beauregard, in rural Lee County about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Auburn.Dozens of people were injured and about 100 houses were destroyed by 170 mile-per-hour (264 km-per-hour) winds, officials said.Mobile homes were tossed over and ripped open last weekend, their contents strewn across a landscape littered with debris and uprooted trees.
