Dozens of Palestinians were reportedly injured on Monday evening in fresh clashes with IDF troops along the Gaza Strip’s northern border with Israel.The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza said 51 people were injured by Israeli troops during the protests, including 10 from live fire, according to reports in Palestinian media.Israel’s Channel 10 said 4,000 Gazans demonstrated along the northern border with Israel, with protesters burning tires and hurling rocks, Molotov cocktails, and firecrackers at soldiers.The protests also saw a several-boat flotilla attempt to break Israel’s naval blockade off Gaza’s coast, in what has become a common occurrence in recent weeks. Palestinian media reported the IDF fired warning shots at the boats, prompting them to return to shore.Earlier on Monday, firefighters worked to extinguish four blazes adjacent to Israeli communities, which were sparked by airborne incendiary devices launched by protesters inside the Gaza Strip.The latest violence comes in the wake of heavy clashes on Friday in which seven Palestinians, including two teenagers, were reported killed.The army released footage of the violent demonstrations, which it said were the worst in two months, depicting attempts to breach and sabotage the security fence. The small Muslim community in Airdrie, Alta., now has a place of their own to get together and pray.After many years of using a local church and travelling to mosques in northeast Calgary, the community just opened the Airdrie Islamic Centre.The first prayers where held there on Thursday.The centre will hold daily prayers and Friday prayers — called Jumma'ah — as well as Islamic school classes for kids on Sundays, operated by the North West Islamic School of Calgary."I'm very, very happy," Yasmin Khan said. "Mostly we pray at home, and it's different to come and do a collective job here."And I'm so happy to see the kids here, that they are going to take lessons and get to know their own religion."'Proper place' for prayers-"Now we have a proper place to say our prayers," said Mona Shehzad, who has lived in Airdrie for the past 11 years. The city is estimated to have at least 60 Muslim families living there."The church here, it was fabulous, really generous that they gave us that place to worship and it really stands for the Canadian culture that we can say our prayers even in a church and we really appreciate that," said Shehzad.But the new Islamic centre, tucked away behind the Safeway off Main Street, is not just about prayers.It also provides a gathering spot for the community to host different cultural and social activities."It feels really good that now finally we have our own place and everyone's welcome here. If people have questions, we'll be happy to answer them," Muhammad Huraira said.The Muslim Council of Calgary is funding the new centre."The council represents about 80,000 Muslims in Calgary and when we feel there's a gap we try and fill that need," said Ghazanfar Zafar, secretary of the MCC."This centre is phase one, and in the future we may even build a permanent centre."Airdrie resident Muhib Ali said the new centre will be more convenient for Muslims living there."When we moved here a couple of years ago, we didn't really have a lot of things for the Muslim community and it's nice to see we're trying to make a footprint here," said Ali, who added he won't miss icy winter drives to Calgary to pray."It's the start of a stronger community, and it will help bring awareness of our religion here, too."

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Tuesday that declaring the end of the 1950-53 Korean War "can never be a bargaining chip" for getting North Korea denuclearised, and said the country "will not particularly hope for it" if the United States does not want the end of war, according to state media KCNA.In a joint statement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in their Pyongyang summit last month, North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un expressed a willingness to “permanently dismantle” the Yongbyon nuclear complex if the United States takes corresponding action.
Moon said this would include a declaration of an official end to the war.
In a commentary, KCNA said on Tuesday that declaring the war's end should have "been resolved half a century ago," and called it "the most basic and primary process for the establishment of new DPRK-U.S. relations and peace" on the Korean peninsula "to which the U.S. was also committed," , referring to North Korea by its official name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea.At their unprecedented summit in June, U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim agreed in broad terms to "build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula."However, Washington wants North Korea to first provide a complete inventory of its weapons programs and take irreversible steps to give up its arsenal.KCNA said the Yongbyon nuclear facility, which the North expressed a willingness to take offline if the United States takes corresponding action, "is a core one for its nuclear program.""The DPRK is taking substantial and crucial steps to implement the joint statement made at the DPRK-U.S. summit, but the U.S. is still trying to subdue someone by resorting to sanctions," the unnamed commentary accused.However, three senior U.S. officials involved in North Korea policy previously told Reuters that no progress has been made in moving toward serious negotiations on eliminating or even halting Kim’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.Dismantling Yongbyon would slow the production of fissile material, but not reduce the current stockpile of plutonium and highly enriched uranium, nor clear suspicions of other secret production sites, an expert previously told Reuters.(Reporting by Joyce Lee; Editing by James Dalgleish)

Dozens of Palestinians were reportedly injured on Monday evening in fresh clashes with IDF troops along the Gaza Strip’s northern border with Israel.The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza said 51 people were injured by Israeli troops during the protests, including 10 from live fire, according to reports in Palestinian media.Israel’s Channel 10 said 4,000 Gazans demonstrated along the northern border with Israel, with protesters burning tires and hurling rocks, Molotov cocktails, and firecrackers at soldiers.The protests also saw a several-boat flotilla attempt to break Israel’s naval blockade off Gaza’s coast, in what has become a common occurrence in recent weeks. Palestinian media reported the IDF fired warning shots at the boats, prompting them to return to shore.Earlier on Monday, firefighters worked to extinguish four blazes adjacent to Israeli communities, which were sparked by airborne incendiary devices launched by protesters inside the Gaza Strip.The latest violence comes in the wake of heavy clashes on Friday in which seven Palestinians, including two teenagers, were reported killed.The army released footage of the violent demonstrations, which it said were the worst in two months, depicting attempts to breach and sabotage the security fence. The small Muslim community in Airdrie, Alta., now has a place of their own to get together and pray.After many years of using a local church and travelling to mosques in northeast Calgary, the community just opened the Airdrie Islamic Centre.The first prayers where held there on Thursday.The centre will hold daily prayers and Friday prayers — called Jumma'ah — as well as Islamic school classes for kids on Sundays, operated by the North West Islamic School of Calgary."I'm very, very happy," Yasmin Khan said. "Mostly we pray at home, and it's different to come and do a collective job here."And I'm so happy to see the kids here, that they are going to take lessons and get to know their own religion."'Proper place' for prayers-"Now we have a proper place to say our prayers," said Mona Shehzad, who has lived in Airdrie for the past 11 years. The city is estimated to have at least 60 Muslim families living there."The church here, it was fabulous, really generous that they gave us that place to worship and it really stands for the Canadian culture that we can say our prayers even in a church and we really appreciate that," said Shehzad.But the new Islamic centre, tucked away behind the Safeway off Main Street, is not just about prayers.It also provides a gathering spot for the community to host different cultural and social activities."It feels really good that now finally we have our own place and everyone's welcome here. If people have questions, we'll be happy to answer them," Muhammad Huraira said.The Muslim Council of Calgary is funding the new centre."The council represents about 80,000 Muslims in Calgary and when we feel there's a gap we try and fill that need," said Ghazanfar Zafar, secretary of the MCC."This centre is phase one, and in the future we may even build a permanent centre."Airdrie resident Muhib Ali said the new centre will be more convenient for Muslims living there."When we moved here a couple of years ago, we didn't really have a lot of things for the Muslim community and it's nice to see we're trying to make a footprint here," said Ali, who added he won't miss icy winter drives to Calgary to pray."It's the start of a stronger community, and it will help bring awareness of our religion here, too."

BEIJING (Reuters) - China expressed anger on Tuesday after a U.S. Navy destroyer sailed near islands claimed by China in the disputed South China Sea, saying it resolutely opposed an operation that it called a threat to its sovereignty.Beijing and Washington are locked in a trade war in which they have imposed increasingly severe rounds of tariffs on each other's imports.A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the destroyer the USS Decatur traveled within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson Reefs in the Spratly Islands on Sunday.The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, where Chinese, Japanese and some Southeast Asian navies operate.China's Defence Ministry said a Chinese naval ship had been sent to warn the U.S. vessel to leave.The ministry said China has irrefutable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and the waters around them, and the situation there is progressing well thanks to the hard work of China and countries in Southeast Asia."The U.S. side repeatedly sends military ships without permission into seas close to South China Seas islands, seriously threatening China's sovereignty and security, seriously damaging Sino-U.S. military ties and seriously harming regional peace and stability," the ministry said."China's military is resolutely opposed to this," it said.The Chinese armed forces will continue to take all necessary steps to protect the country's sovereignty and security, the ministry said.China's Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement it strongly urged the United States to stop such "provocative" actions and to "immediately correct its mistakes".The operation also comes as military ties between the two countries have dived, with China also angered by U.S. sanctions on China's military for buying Russian arms and by U.S. support for self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own.U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Monday he did not see relations between the United States and China worsening, a day after his trip to China was canceled.Reuters reported on Sunday that China canceled a security meeting with Mattis that had been planned for October. North Korea says war's end can't be bargaining chip for denuclearization: KCNA-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Tuesday that declaring the end of the 1950-53 Korean War "can never be a bargaining chip" for getting North Korea denuclearised, and said the country "will not particularly hope for it" if the United States does not want the end of war, according to state media KCNA.In a joint statement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in their Pyongyang summit last month, North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un expressed a willingness to “permanently dismantle” the Yongbyon nuclear complex if the United States takes corresponding action.
Moon said this would include a declaration of an official end to the war.
In a commentary, KCNA said on Tuesday that declaring the war's end should have "been resolved half a century ago," and called it "the most basic and primary process for the establishment of new DPRK-U.S. relations and peace" on the Korean peninsula "to which the U.S. was also committed," , referring to North Korea by its official name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea.At their unprecedented summit in June, U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim agreed in broad terms to "build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula."However, Washington wants North Korea to first provide a complete inventory of its weapons programs and take irreversible steps to give up its arsenal.KCNA said the Yongbyon nuclear facility, which the North expressed a willingness to take offline if the United States takes corresponding action, "is a core one for its nuclear program.""The DPRK is taking substantial and crucial steps to implement the joint statement made at the DPRK-U.S. summit, but the U.S. is still trying to subdue someone by resorting to sanctions," the unnamed commentary accused.However, three senior U.S. officials involved in North Korea policy previously told Reuters that no progress has been made in moving toward serious negotiations on eliminating or even halting Kim’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.Dismantling Yongbyon would slow the production of fissile material, but not reduce the current stockpile of plutonium and highly enriched uranium, nor clear suspicions of other secret production sites, an expert previously told Reuters.(Reporting by Joyce Lee; Editing by James Dalgleish)

PALU, Indonesia (Reuters) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered more rescuers to hunt for victims of a devastating earthquake and tsunami on the island of Sulawesi, saying on Tuesday everyone had to be found, as the scale of destruction became clearer.Some remote areas have been out of contact for more than three days and officials fear the confirmed death toll of 844 could soar into the thousands when losses in those areas are revealed."The are some main priorities that we must tackle and the first is to evacuate, find and save victims who've not yet been found," Widodo told a government meeting to coordinate disaster recovery efforts.He said he had ordered the national search and rescue agency to send more police and soldiers into the affected districts, some cut off since Friday's 7.5 magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami waves destroyed roads, triggered landslides and downed bridges.The Red Cross said the situation was "nightmarish" and reports from its workers venturing into one cut-off area, Donggala, a region of 300,000 people north of Palu and close to the epicenter, indicated it had been hit "extremely hard".Four badly hit districts have a combined population of about 1.4 million.Most of the confirmed dead have been in the small city of Palu, 1,500 km (930 miles) northeast of Jakarta.The quake triggered tsunami waves as high as six meters (20 feet) that smashed into the city's beachfront, while hotels and shopping malls collapsed in ruins and some neighborhoods were swallowed up by ground liquefaction.Among those killed in the area were 34 children at a Christian bible study camp, a Red Cross official said.More than 50 of the dead were taken to a mass grave on the outskirts of Palu on Tuesday, while rescuers held out hope they could still save lives."We suspect there are still some survivors trapped inside," the head of one rescue team, Agus Haryono, told Reuters at the collapsed seven-storey Hotel Roa Roa.About 50 people were believed to have been caught inside the hotel when it was brought down.bout 12 people have been recovered from the ruins, with one more body on Tuesday.Three of the victims were recovered alive.Haryono pored over the hotel's blueprints and building plans, searching for possible pockets and a way through to them.
