We are an honest broker,’ says US envoy to Israel from his new Jerusalem office-America wants a better future for the Palestinians, Friedman says. If they don't even come to the table, 'I can't imagine that would be well received in the White House'-By TOI staff-24 May 2018, 9:52 pm

Although the United States is “incredibly close” to Israel, it is nonetheless “an honest broker” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said Wednesday, and added that he was “pretty confident” that President Donald Trump could bring the parties to a peace deal.Interviewed on Israeli television’s Hadashot news in his new office at the embassy in Jerusalem, Friedman said he believed the Palestinian leadership “will have no choice but to pursue” the much-hyped Trump peace plan if the proposal can offer “a better future, more optimistic, more promising future to the Palestinian people.”Asked whether he was confident Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas would respond positively to the proposal, and constituted a partner, however, Friedman sounded less certain. He said he was “concerned and disturbed” by some of the things Abbas has said and done, but also that it was a “decision for the Palestinian people. We don’t pick fights with the Palestinian leadership. We try to support the Palestinian people.”Reminded that Abbas had recently described him as “a son of a dog,” Friedman shrugged off the insult, saying, “I have a very thick skin.” Abbas and the PA have been boycotting the US administration since Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December. As for Benjamin Netanyahu, Friedman said he had “worked very closely” with the prime minister, and called him an “extraordinary leader.”Said Friedman: “If the prime minister thinks that what’s being proposed is in the best interests of Israel in its totality, I have no doubt that he’ll move in that direction.”He noted that Israelis leaders, as representatives of a sovereign nation, could “speak to us candidly about what they can and can’t live with. And we would respect that.”He made plain that the US would not be imposing terms on the sides, but said that if the Palestinians refused to even sit down and discuss peace terms, “I can’t imagine that would be well received in the White House.”“We are an honest broker,” he insisted. “We are incredibly close to Israel. We have an important relationship there. They’re one of our most important allies. But that doesn’t mean we cannot help to bring the parties to a peace deal,” he said, adding that he was “pretty confident” of success.Asked whether it might have been smarter not to open the embassy on Nakba Day, which saw more than 60 Palestinians — some 50 of them Hamas members — killed in clashes with the IDF at the Gaza border, Friedman said Hamas was determined to make trouble on whatever day would have been chosen to inaugurate the embassy.“I don’t know that there would have been any other date that would not have provoked what we saw,” he said. Hamas was determined “to take advantage of this [embassy] opening” in order to cause as much “mayhem” as it could.Pointing to the new seal on the wall at the entrance to the embassy, which cites his name beneath that of the president, Friedman said he was immensely proud to have presided over the relocation of the embassy and had made two copies of the seal — one of himself, and one for Trump for the Oval Office. These were paid for, he said, with his own money, “one for him, one for me.”In a separate interview with Channel 10 news, Friedman urged for Trump to be given time to strike a peace deal. “He hasn’t failed on the ultimate deal; he’s working on the ultimate deal,” he said. “It’s certainly too soon to write the postmortem on that.”He said Trump was an optimist on the issue, with “better powers of persuasion than anyone I’ve ever met.”Friedman also said the decision to move the embassy was Trump’s, and that he recalled the president saying in the Oval Office, upon reaching the decision, “Let’s do the right thing, whatever it is.” Said Friedman: “I don’t think he cared less one way or the other about the politics.”In an excerpt of the Hadashot interview aired earlier Wednesday, Friedman said he was “more mortified… than any Palestinian” by pictures of him standing alongside a doctored image of Jerusalem that showed the Dome of the Rock replaced by a Jewish Temple.Friedman said he was duped into being pictured with the poster during a visit Tuesday to the offices of an ultra-Orthodox group in Bnei Brak.“Someone just shoved it in my face and took a picture. Of course that’s unacceptable to me, and the United States respects the status quo on the Haram al-Sharif,” he said, using a Muslim name for the Temple Mount. “That’s really an unfortunate thing, and I felt terrible that people might have reacted to that the way they did.”To Channel 10, Friedman said the incident “took a second” and that he had spent the subsequent 24 hours “trying to clarify” what had happened. “I’ll have to be more careful next time somebody rushes at me with a picture,” he said.Asked on Channel 10 about Trump’s strategy regarding Iran, now that the US has pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal, Friedman would not be drawn on whether the US was seeking regime change, but stressed that America “sides with the Iranian people.” Trump’s goal, he said, was to “end all of the rogue behavior” of the regime.

74 Democratic lawmakers urge Netanyahu not to raze Palestinian villages-In letter, PM told demolishing Sussiya and Khan al-Ahmar would counter shared values, endanger Israeli democracy-By Eric Cortellessa and TOI staff-24 May 2018, 10:49 pm

A group of 74 Democratic lawmakers this week urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt the planned demolition of two Palestinian villages.Orchestrated by representatives Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and John Yarmuth of Kentucky, the letter calls on the premier to nix an order to demolish the West Bank Palestinian villages of Sussiya and Khan al-Ahmar.Israel maintains that both communities were built illegally, but plans to raze the villages have sparked a sustained international outcry. The letter sent to Netanyahu Monday said that the “destruction and displacement of such communities would run counter to shared US and Israeli values, while further undermining long-term Israeli security, Palestinian dignity and the prospects for peacefully achieving two states for two people.”It said demolishing Sussiya and Khan al-Ahmar “endangers Israel’s future as a Jewish democracy,” and urged the government to “fairly re-evaluate” Palestinian requests for building rights.J Street, a liberal Jewish Mideast think tank that helped promote the appeal on Capitol Hill, welcomed the letter, calling it the most significant criticism of Israeli settlement expansion by Congress ever.“This is the latest sign that US lawmakers are increasingly concerned by the alarming consequences of the Israeli government’s policies in the West Bank,” said Dylan Williams, J Street’s vice president of government affairs, in a statement. “Demolitions, evictions and settlement expansion clearly imperil the prospects for a peaceful two-state solution.”Monday’s letter follows a similar letter to Netanyahu signed by 10 Democratic senators, including prominent figures like Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Diane Feinstein of California.Sussiya, in the southern West Bank, has been under threat of demolition for several years, after Israel found that homes there had been built without authorization. The town’s residents argue that they had no choice but to build illegally because Israel’s Civil Administration rarely grants permits to Palestinians in the West Bank’s Area C, a zone officially under Israeli security and administrative control per the 1993 Oslo peace accords.A master plan devised by residents was rejected by the Defense Ministry. Israel has not made a counteroffer for the issue to be resolved without a demolition. Some 300 people live in Sussiya. They reside mainly on farmland and their community has had no running water or electricity since they were expelled from the village’s original location 30 years ago, when there were about 25 families living at the site.Khan al-Ahmar, a Bedouin community of some 100 people east of Jerusalem, has also garnered international support since the Defense Ministry issued demolition orders for nearly the whole village last year.“Khan al-Ahmar is one of the most vulnerable communities in the West Bank struggling to maintain a minimum standard of living in the face of intense pressure from the Israeli authorities to move,” UN humanitarian official Robert Piper said in a statement in February.A number of traditionally nomadic Bedouin communities are based east of Jerusalem, where rights groups fear demolitions could eventually clear the way for further Israeli settlement construction. In November’s letter, the senators, quoting the left-wing settlement watchdog Peace Now, said the Israeli government was dramatically expanding its settlement enterprise. They said that Israel had advanced 88 plans, including 6,742 housing units in 59 separate settlements, in 2017 — marking a a 258 percent increase in the number of settlement housing units proposed over the year prior. The Trump administration has actively been trying to renew negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians as part of its peace push — a priority for the US president, but has offered only gentle criticism of settlement construction.J Street and its campus branch, J Street U, launched a campaign last fall to stop the razing of Sussiya and Khan al-Ahmar called “Stop Demolitions, Build Peace.”

Jared Kushner reportedly granted security clearance-After a lengthy background check, key Trump adviser can once again have access to top secret information-By Eric Tucker and Jonathan Lemire-TOI-MAY 24,18

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has been granted a security clearance after a lengthy background check, a move that ensures the key White House adviser with a broad international portfolio can have access to some of the country’s most closely held secrets.Kushner, who serves as a senior adviser on the Middle East and other issues, was among many White House advisers who had been operating without approval for full security clearances. That led to a White House policy overhaul in February that significantly downgraded access to sensitive information for Kushner and other Trump administration officials on interim clearances.“With respect to the news about his permanent security clearance, as we stated before, his application was properly submitted, reviewed by career officials, and went through the normal process,” Kushner’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said in a statement. “Having completed these processes, Mr. Kushner is looking forward to continuing the work the President has asked him to do.”In addition, Kushner was interviewed for a second time last month by the office of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.“In each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did whatever he could to expedite the conclusion of all the investigation,” Lowell said. The first interview occurred last fall and the questions were limited to former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn, who subsequently pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and began cooperating with Mueller. The second interview occurred in April and concerned potential influence by foreign governments, including Russia, and the firing of former FBI director James Comey, among other topics, Lowell said on CNN. The interview did not deal with Kushner’s finances or his companies, Lowell said.Kushner — the point of contact for foreign officials during the campaign and transition — was alluded to, though not by name, in Flynn’s guilty plea as a transition team official who encouraged Flynn to contact foreign government officials, about a UN Security Council resolution against Israeli settlements.FBI background checks for security clearances routinely examine an applicant’s financial holdings and foreign contacts. The delay in Kushner’s case was caused by a backlog in the new administration and Kushner’s extensive financial wealth, which required lengthy review, Lowell said.He said Kushner’s clearance was decided by career officials in the intelligence community and the FBI. “It happened the way it happens for thousands of people,” Lowell said, noting, “There was nobody in the political process that had anything to do with it.”As the application process was pending, Kushner’s “top secret/sensitive compartmented information” access was downgraded in February when White House Chief of Staff John Kelly ordered that officials with interim clearances be cut off if they hadn’t received permanent clearances. That meant Kushner was able to see information only at the lower “secret” level, but not highly classified information.Mark Zaid, a Washington lawyer who specializes in security clearances, said that though it’s hard to say with certainty whether Kushner’s clearance means he’s not facing legal jeopardy from Mueller, “At least looking at the facts as we know them today, it leads me to believe he is no longer in the crosshairs.”

Khamenei sets terms for Tehran to remain in nuclear deal-Iranian leader says Europe must vow not to seek limits on missile program, regional actions, protect Islamic Republic's economy from American sanctions-By TOI staff and Agencies-MAY 24,18
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday set conditions for Europe for Tehran to remain in the 2015 nuclear accord, following the US withdrawal from the deal earlier this month.Khamenei, addressing government officials on the occasion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, said European powers must vow not to seek new limitations on Iran’s ballistic missile program or its activities in the Middle East, as demanded by the Trump administration. They must also “fully guarantee Iran’s oil sales,” he said, adding that if the US “damages” oil sales through renewed economic sanctions, “Europeans should make up for that and buy Iranian oil.”European banks, he added, “must safeguard trade with the Islamic Republic” in the face of new sanctions. He also said the EU “must submit a resolution against the US at the UN Security Council” to protest the American withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).He warned that should conditions not be met, “Iran reserves the right to restart its suspended nuclear activities.”He added: “We do not want to start a fight with [Europe] but…we don’t trust them either.”The Iranian leader said Tehran has learned it cannot “interact” with the United States as it is a country whose word cannot be trusted.“The first experience is that the government of the Islamic Republic cannot interact with America… Why? Because America is not committed to its promises,” Press TV quoted him as saying.Khamenei said the US has been aiming to topple the Islamic republic for 40 years. “From the first day of the Islamic Revolution the US has applied all kinds of enmity to hit the Islamic republic,” he said. The speech comes just days after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a steep list of demands to be included in a nuclear treaty to replace the deal scuttled by Trump. Among them, Pompeo demanded that Iran make wholesale changes in its military and regional policies or face “the strongest sanctions in history.”Pompeo has called for the negotiation of a new deal that would go far beyond the single focus of the nuclear agreement and would have the status of a formal treaty. The 2015 deal concluded under the Obama administration dealt only with the nuclear program.Iranian President Hassan Rouhani compared Pompeo’s comments to those made by the administration of George W. Bush ahead of the 2003 Iraq invasion.“The era of such statements has evolved and the Iranian people have heard these statements hundreds of times, and no longer pay attention,” Rouhani said.Other senior Iranian officials rejected the demands, saying the US was afraid to face Iran in battle and vowing to push ahead with their country’s military programs. On Monday a senior IRGC officer said Pompeo deserves a “strong punch to the mouth.”Commenting on US threats to ramp up sanctions on Iran, Ismail Kowsari said, “The people of Iran should stand united in the face of this and they will deliver a strong punch to the mouth of the American Secretary of State and anyone who backs them.”Pompeo argued that Iran had advanced its march across the Middle East precisely because of the nuclear deal, which saw the West lifting sanctions on Tehran in return for Iran limiting its nuclear program.US President Donald Trump’s newly installed top diplomat also hinted at the possibility of military action should Iranian leaders reconstitute their nuclear program.“If they restart their nuclear program, they will have big problems, bigger problems than they’ve ever had before,” he said, also threatening to “crush” Iran’s terrorist proxies around the world.”The New York Times reported Wednesday that weapons researchers have identified activity at a remote secret facility in the Iranian desert that points to the covert development of long-range missiles that could potentially be used to attack the United States.Satellite images appear to show, among other things, activity around a tunnel leading underground and evidence of powerful rocket engine tests that scorched telltale marks in the desert sand near the city of Shahrud, the report said.Western officials have maintained that the only reason Tehran could have for manufacturing long-range missiles would be to fit them with non-conventional, including atomic, warheads.Tehran insists that it sees the missile program as crucial to its defensive posture, and says its existence is non-negotiable.

Perfect time’ for US recognition of Golan sovereignty, intel minister says-Katz tells Reuters action is 'topping the agenda' in talks with Washington, believes decision could be made within the year-By Stuart Winer-TOI-MAY 24,18

Israel is hoping for the Trump administration to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, Intelligence Minister Israel Katz said in an interview published Wednesday, explaining that such a move would serve as a message of warning to Iran.Speaking to the Reuters news agency, Katz said recognition of Israel’s hold over the territory was “topping the agenda” in talks with Washington, which has already recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and this month moved its embassy to the city.Israel captured the Golan from Syria during the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it in 1981, action never recognized by the international community.“This is the perfect time to make such a move,” said Katz, who is also transportation minister and a member of the government’s security cabinet. “The most painful response you can give the Iranians is to recognize Israel’s Golan sovereignty — with an American statement, a presidential proclamation.”The recognition would be a way to both punish and caution Iran for its aggressive attitude towards Israel, he said.“You want to destroy [Israel], to generate attacks? Look, you got exactly the opposite,” Katz said in reference to Israeli concerns that Iran is seeking to entrench itself in Syria.“I believe there is great ripeness and a high probability this will happen,” Katz said, and predicted the decision could be made later this year “give or take a few months.”The White House declined to comment on Katz’s claims, Reuters said.Earlier this week a US congressman said he had called on Washington to recognize Israeli sovereignty. In an interview published Sunday, Florida Rep. Ron DeSantis (R) told the Walla news website he had brought the proposal before the Congressional Committee on Foreign Affairs, of which he is a member, on Thursday.DeSantis told Walla he had suggested that amendment to a chapter on Syria in the US military’s budget. Though the move would be largely symbolic, he noted, approval could encourage the administration to take a position on the matter.Although Israel and Syria signed a ceasefire agreement after the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Damascus remains determined to regain the Golan territory.Russia and Iran, key allies of Syria, have both provided President Bashar Assad’s regime with military support as he battles to suppress an insurgency now in its eighth year.Katz said he believed while recognizing Israeli sovereignty in the Golan would send a stinging message to Iran, Syria ally Russia would not be too perturbed. Moscow may issue verbal condemnations, he assessed, but not much more. It could even accept the plan as part of a wide effort to end the civil war.“In actuality, from their perspective, if it gives Israel something in the wider Syrian context, what do they care? Assad’s survival is more important to them, as Syria is so weak,” he said. “They want a new, overall re-arrangement.”Israel has carried out a series of airstrikes against Iranian interests in Syria, vowing that it will do whatever it takes to keep Iran from digging in on Syrian territory. Earlier this month Iran fired a volley of dozens of rockets from Syrian territory at Israel. Most fell in Syrian territory, and several were shot down by Israeli missile defense systems. During retaliatory airstrikes against Iranian positions, Israeli jets also blasted Syrian air defense targets which had opened fire at the planes.“This is a moment of truth for Assad,” Katz said. “Does he want to be an Iranian proxy, or not? If he becomes an Iranian proxy, then sooner or later he’s condemning himself, because Israel is acting against Iran in Syria.”Katz suggested that recognition could also bring the Palestinians back to the negotiation table, which they have shunned in the wake of American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the relocation of the US embassy.“They should hurry up and sit down with Israel, because where Israel says it is determined to be, it will be, and it won’t give up, and history is working in our favor,” Katz said.

Israel said to consider long-term cease fire with Hamas-Qatar and Egypt reportedly pushing proposals for an end to rocket fire from Gaza in return for easing border crossing controls-By Jacob Magid and Stuart Winer-TOI-24 May 2018, 11:13 pm

Israel is considering agreeing to a long-term cessation of hostilities with Hamas after rejecting the offer for weeks, Channel 10 news reported Wednesday.Diplomatic officials told the TV channel that Israel has given up on its demand that Hamas, the terror group ruling the Gaza Strip, demilitarize and that the Palestinian Authority replace it in governing the coastal enclave.Israeli officials were said to have recognized that with PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s health deteriorating, the likelihood that his Ramallah-based government will regain control of Gaza is slim.Egyptian and Qatari officials are each proposing and mediating their suggestions for an agreement that would see Israel significantly ease its blockade of Gaza in exchange for the complete cessation of rocket fire and of the digging by terror groups of cross-border tunnels used to carry out attacks in Israeli territory. Hamas would also have to agree to not use materials allowed into Gaza under the loosened restrictions for its military apparatus. As part of the reported deal, the Egyptians would ease constraints at the Rafah border crossing with Gaza, the report said.A senior White House official told Channel 10 that Hamas, which seeks to destroy Israel, presents a “challenge.”“None of our partners has a plan that it is clear will work, but we are trying,” the official was quoted as saying, and noting that the US is pressuring Middle Eastern nations to publicly declare that Hamas is responsible for the escalation in the Gaza Strip. Also on Wednesday Jordan’s King Abdallah II traveled to Cairo for talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi about regional developments. The flurry of diplomacy comes after dozens of Palestinians were killed last week in clashes on the Israeli-Gazan border.More than 40,000 Palestinians took part in “unprecedentedly” violent rioting along the border, according to the army. Thousands of demonstrators burned tires, threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli troops across the fence and, in a few cases, engaged in armed battles with the IDF, the military said.Israel says Hamas encouraged the clashes as cover for breaching the border fence to carry out attacks in Israel. Hamas officials had publicly urged Gazans to storm the fence and enter Israeli territory, while Israel had warned it was determined to protect its border.According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, at least 60 people were killed in the riots and hundreds were wounded by live fire. Hamas later acknowledged that 50 of the dead were its members.Tensions along the Gaza border have been high since March 30, which marked the start of a series of violent protests along the security fence, known collectively as the “March of Return.”Although the violence has since largely abated, there have been sporadic incidents — including gunfire from Gaza — which have drawn Israeli strikes on Hamas positions.Israel’s last major military confrontation with Hamas was during Operation Protective Edge in 2014. It has maintained, along with Egypt, a blockade of Gaza that it says is needed to prevent Hamas bringing in weapons.Agencies contributed to this report.

Iran: If US attacks, its leaders will face same fate as Saddam-'There is no doubt that the Americans will be defeated,' says supreme leader Khamenei-By Stuart Winer and TOI staff-24 May 2018, 9:33 pm

Iran’s military threatened the US on Wednesday, saying that in the event of an American attack, leaders in Washington will end up like deposed and executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.“The American leaders… have got this message that if they attack Iran, they will encounter a fate similar to that of Saddam Hussein,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement broadcast by Iranian national television, Reuters reported.Iran was marking the date it won a key battle in its eight-year war with its neighbor Iraq between 1980 and 1988. Hussein, who ruled Iraq during the war years, was deposed during the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a US-led Western coalition, then tried and, in 2006, executed by Iraqi authorities.Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, making his first public comments since US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a series of demands from Iran, said the US had a deep enmity toward his country, but that if Iranian officials do their duty, the country would defeat the US.“There is no doubt that the Americans will be defeated…provided Iranian officials fully perform their duties,” he said, according to Reuters.Other senior Iranian officials rejected the demands, saying the US was afraid to face Iran in battle and vowing to push ahead with their country’s military programs. On Monday a senior IRGC officer said Pompeo deserves a “strong punch to the mouth.”Commenting on US threats to ramp up sanctions on Iran, Ismail Kowsari said, “The people of Iran should stand united in the face of this and they will deliver a strong punch to the mouth of the American Secretary of State and anyone who backs them.”Pompeo had said the Trump administration was preparing to impose “the strongest sanctions in history” on Tehran after withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal earlier this month, as he laid out his list of demands for a new treaty.Pompeo argued that Iran had advanced its march across the Middle East precisely because of the nuclear deal, which saw the West lifting sanctions on Tehran in return for Iran limiting its nuclear program.US President Donald Trump’s newly installed top diplomat also hinted at the possibility of military action should Iranian leaders reconstitute their nuclear program.“If they restart their nuclear program, they will have big problems, bigger problems than they’ve ever had before,” he said, also threatening to “crush” Iran’s terrorist proxies around the world.”

Hawaii volcano belches new ash plume as geothermal wells secured from harm-[Reuters]-By Marco Garcia-YAHOONEWS-May 24, 2018

PAHALA, Hawaii (Reuters) - The restive Kilauea Volcano belched clouds of ash into the skies over Hawaii's Big Island twice more on Wednesday as civil defense authorities reported that pressurized geothermal wells at a nearby power plant had been secured from approaching lava. The latest back-to-back upheavals of ash from the main summit crater of Kilauea -- one before dawn and another several hours later -- came on the 21st day of what geologists rank as one of the biggest eruption cycles in a century from one of the world's most active volcanoes. The earlier ash plume rose to a height of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters), while the later one reached about 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), authorities said.Intermittent explosions of ash from the summit, believed to be driven by underground bursts of steam deep inside the throat of the crater vent, are continuing the occur about twice a day, with smaller blasts in between, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) vulcanologist Wendy Stovall told reporters. The Hawaii County Civil Defense agency warned in its latest bulletin that residents downwind of Kilauea should take care to avoid exposure to ash, which can cause eye irritation and breathing difficulties, particularly in people with respiratory problems.Authorities also said that emissions of sulfur dioxide gas, harmful if inhaled, remained at high levels from newly opened lava-spewing fissures in the ground running through populated areas on the eastern flank of the volcano."Residents in the affected area should be prepared to take leave of the area with little notice due to gas or lava inundation," the bulletin said. One major potential hazard that appeared to have been brought under control was at the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) plant, which provides about a quarter of the Big Island's electricity.Lava from an active fissure nearby had flowed onto the property early this week, posing the risk of toxic gases being released in the event the molten rock encroached into any of three pressurized deep-underground wells.Utility crews racing to quench the wells with cold water and cap the well heads with iron plugs before lava could reach them managed to secure the site. The civil defense agency reported on Wednesday, "there is no immediate threat to any of the wells at PGV."The facility also received a respite from Mother Nature. Accumulations of cooled, hardened lava created a thick, 30-foot (9.14-meter)-high wall of solid volcanic rock channeling fresh lava streams from fissures to the south, away from the PGV plant, USGS scientists said.Authorities also were monitoring hazards from noxious clouds of acid fumes, steam and fine glass-like particles -- called laze -- emitted when lava flows pour into the ocean on the island's southern end.Laze -- a term combining the words "lava" and "haze" -- is formed when molten lava, reaching temperatures of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,093 Celsius), reacts with sea water. Although potentially fatal if inhaled, Stovall said the danger was confined to the immediate vicinity of laze plumes themselves.Kilauea rumbled back to life on May 3 as it began extruding lava and sulfur dioxide emissions through a series of fissures, marking the latest phase of an eruption cycle that has continued nearly nonstop for 35 years. The occurrence of new lava vents, now numbering about two dozen, have been accompanied by earthquakes and periodic eruptions from the summit crater. At least 44 homes and other structures have been destroyed, and a man was seriously injured on Saturday when a chunk of lava shot out of a fissure and struck him in the leg. Some 2,000 people remain under evacuation orders due to lava flows and sulfur dioxide gas.(Writing by Steve Gorman; Editing by Sandra Maler)

U.S.-led coalition hits Syrian army positions: Hezbollah media unit-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 24, 2018

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition targeted two Syrian army positions in the eastern Syrian desert, a military media unit run by Lebanon's Hezbollah group said early on Thursday, but U.S. military officials denied any knowledge of the strikes. The unit, a Damascus ally, said the strikes took place near T2, an energy installation located near the border with Iraq and about 100 km (60 miles) west of the Euphrates river where the coalition is backing ground forces against Islamic State.A U.S. military official denied any knowledge of the strikes."We have no operational reporting of a U.S.-led coalition strike against pro-Syrian regime targets or forces," Captain Bill Urban, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, told Reuters.Another Pentagon spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: "We have no information to substantiate those reports."Syrian state media did not immediately report the strikes.Eastern Syria was mostly held by Islamic State until last year, when two rival campaigns, one by the Syrian army backed by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, the other by Kurdish and Arab militias backed by the U.S. coalition, took most of its land.Communication between Russia and the United States averted most clashes between them. However, the coalition has struck Syrian pro-government forces that it said were attempting to attack coalition positions. The U.S. military operating outside the coalition also maintains a base at Tanf in the eastern Syrian desert near the borders with Iraq and Jordan and last year struck pro-government forces moving along a road towards it.(Reporting by Angus McDowall; Additional reporting by Idrees Ali in Washington; Editing by Sandra Maler)

After mass shootings, students hope to change sense of siege to surge in activism-[Christian Science Monitor]-Patrik Jonsson-YAHOONEWS-May 23, 2018

As he has watched the aftermath of school shootings this year – including a massacre Friday in Santa Fe, Texas – Carson Collins has felt the pressure to grieve and move on. But that impulse, he told his dad, has been countered by an even stronger urge to not let go.In December, a 21-year-old former student walked into Aztec High School in New Mexico with a gun. Carson, a senior, was one of those locked in a classroom, ready along with his fellow students to charge the shooter in the hallway right outside. Instead, the man killed himself after killing two students.Reacting to an effort at Aztec High to help students heal by cheering them up, Carson told his dad: “When you think about it, it's like you get punched in the gut ... and then they tell you to smile. I'm not prepared to smile.”That sense of siege is being felt across the country as the school year draws to a somber close. “Everyone's just talking about, 'I hope we can make it to the summer, [that] nothing happens before ... we can get out of this place,' ” says Marcel McClinton, a junior at Stratford High School in Houston.Interviewed after traveling to Santa Fe to show his support for the community, Marcel and his fellow student activists represent an impulse that goes back almost two decades to Columbine High. After all, those students also lobbied Congress for curbs on gun purchasing. They failed, as did similar efforts by parents after the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut in 2013.But this year, the March for Our Lives movement launched by survivors of the Parkland, Fla., shooting, has been boosted by a changing national mood and  a generation that has put a new moral framework on the issue and is, by multiple measures, less violent than the ones before it. These students aren’t talking about jobs or the beach but rather about a summer of activism and soul-searching, seeking a sliver of hope that the United States will find a way to better protect its 50 million public school students. Last week, student activists announced dual campaigns: a summer tour to raise awareness and a voter registration drive to challenge politicians who oppose gun control measures. The appeals are already “moving the country like I have never seen,” former education secretary Arne Duncan told an education conference in San Diego last week.“There is a very strong sense on this issue ... that we as a nation are at a breaking point, and the status quo feels to so many of us to be unsustainable,” says Angus Johnston, who studies the history of student activism at the City University of New York. “We feel complicit. And that, for a lot of us, is new.”Nearly 20 years after the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado, two-thirds of US schools hold active shooter drills. Metal detectors have become ubiquitous. Increased guard patrols have likely reduced casualty tolls, and teachers in some districts are urged to come armed to class. Still, so far this year, the US has seen 13 school shootings where people were killed or injured, leaving a total of 32 dead and 65 injured – more than the casualty toll for America's military."People are fed up with this idea of 'now is not the time to talk about it,' " says Columbine survivor Paula Reed, who is still a teacher at Columbine. "Now is the time to talk about it. It just is."-HISTORICAL TRENDS UPTURNED-Despite the headlines around mass shootings, younger Americans as a whole are bucking historical violence trends, to the point where teenagers are now more likely to have to bail their parents out of jail than the other way around, according to one juvenile crime expert."If you tell people that this generation of teenagers is less than half as likely to get shot to death as 25 years ago, people would think you are crazy, but it's true," says Mike Males, a researcher with the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice in San Francisco. "There is something about this generation that is more gun-averse than other generations, which is why I think they do speak with authority."And while the students march and help their peers to sign up to vote, state and federal governments also are searching for solutions – aware that the usual narrative is no longer seen as adequate. Gov. Greg Abbott began convening round tables Tuesday to discuss a way forward for his state, which is grappling with not only the Santa Fe shooting, but the massacre at a church in Sutherland Springs. "We want to hear from everybody," he said.-RANGE OF RESPONSES-In New Mexico, Aztec Municipal School District is one of a growing number of districts introducing the "Say Something" app created by parents of Sandy Hook victims. It allows students to anonymously report tips about disaffected classmates.Last week, President Trump's school safety commission met to discuss a federal response. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have sought new resources for mental health and safety, most prominently by increasing funding for the federal Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants, by $700 million, to $1.1 billion.About 200 universities and national education and mental health groups have signed onto the "Call for Action" program to prevent gun violence, rooted in proven methods for identifying and helping students who see violence as a solution to their angst. In Florida’s Broward County, several of the Parkland victims' parents are running for school board, determined to turn their frustration and grief into lasting change. And student activists have vowed to keep up their rallies through the summer. A June 21 "die-in" event is planned in Washington for the second anniversary of the Pulse Night Club shooting."The most important thing ... is to keep remembering the victims and to keep them in our hearts," says Nathan Dominguez, a March for Our Lives activist in Newton, Kan. "The second thing that we really need to remember is that the people on the other side of the aisle, we're also doing this for them. We can't make them out as our enemy. Those are our fellow Americans and they're important in this process."Alexandria Aldred, a senior at Havelock High School, in North Carolina, was one of thousands who walked out of school earlier this year in protest. Her focus is on voter registration and gun control. But she says she is also keen to work with people who think differently about those issues."When I come across those [who disagree] I try to keep things level ... I try to keep it an adult-to-adult conversation where it's calm and it's not led by hate or emotion, it's led by facts," she says."There are a lot of people who believe that high-schoolers shouldn't be involved in politics and that a lot of us don't know what we're talking about," Alexandria adds. "People need to start listening to us because at this point we know what we're talking about because ... we go to school with the fear in the back of our heads that we might not make it out of there today. And so I think that our opinions really matter and the older generations need to start listening."-SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER: 'I NEED TO STEP IT UP'-Roger Collins reacted to the Aztec shooting first by being a dad, making sure his two kids, including Carson, were safe. But his position as a school board member has also been affected, he says, in part by his town's tragedy, but also by the response from his son and others of his generation."If kids are doing more than I am doing, I need to step it up for sure," says Mr. Collins. "They brought that dialogue to the country and got people to the same table to discuss what schools are doing. They began the whole process of change. That makes you try to figure out what's best for you and how can you try and make a difference in this community."For Sterling Haring, the activism has been enough to break his "physician's silence" – an impulse by doctors to not get involved in politics.Last month, Dr. Haring spoke at two March for Our Lives events, one in Nashville, the other in Benton, Ky., where two people died and 18 others were injured in a January shooting. Haring was one of the physicians at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville who treated the wounded from that school shooting. One of the teenagers rushed to his hospital died."There are those who have the luxury of becoming numb to this – and there are those of us who do not," says Haring, a gun owner who has worked on victims of three mass shootings in the past year: a Waffle House shooting, the Benton school killings, and the Antioch, Tenn., church shooting. "In the past, we've had these very taboo subjects – to remain friends with somebody you can't talk about things like guns – but I feel that's kind of passing. No. 2, we're starting to call a spade a spade. This has happened enough that the normal excuses aren't working."The reaction in Santa Fe has been different from the one after Parkland. It is a far more rural and conservative town, for one thing.Yet Marcel, the student from Houston, says that a broader sense that something is going amiss is being heard in Santa Fe, too. After attending a Sunday vigil and a youth group, he received a text from a group of girls who didn't want to join March for Our Lives, but did want the group to help them get their message out.The girls' wish to shape their own protest was particularly telling to Marcel, who survived a mass shooting near Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston in 2016.“It is important to note that Houston, Dallas, and Austin are not Texas; Texas is Santa Fe," he says. “Texas is rural, conservative communities where ... these kids are gifted shotguns when they're 10, 11 years old. That's their culture. I understand their culture. That is who they are. But as we approach these communities when things happen ... the story is not that the shooting happened. We know it happened. The story I think should be: Where do you move from this?"Staff Rebecca Asoulin and Noble Ingram contributed to this report from Boston.
