Israeli researchers say they have theoretically developed a breakthrough “cloaking carpet” that would render an object placed on it invisible.According to a recent study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, scientists from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) have conceived a new method that deflects and scatters light away from a “cloaking” chip surface so that objects laid upon it can’t be seen.“We have engineered a new kind of meta-surface, an artificial material on a chip that can be put on any object so that it manages to create a new path for the light, deflecting light from the object and rendering it invisible,” said Dr. Alina Karabchevsky, head of BGU’s Light-on-a-Chip Group and a faculty member of the BGU Unit of Electro-Optical Engineering and the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology.In a phone interview with The Times of Israel, she called the method “hiding above the carpet.”The visual ability of humans and animals stems from the interaction of light, eyes and brains: we have the ability to see because light from an object can move through space and reach our eyes. Objects we see are actually reflecting light into our eyes.Now the researchers say that they have devised a way to deflect light and stop it from hitting objects, so that the light is not reflected to us and the objects are therefore invisible to our sight.“We have created a new path for the light,” she said. “The artificial material on a chip makes the light bend around the object, resulting in the invisibility of the object.”The interesting part of their cloaking design, she said, was that if the object covers 70 percent of the meta-surface, or what she calls the carpet, it can be concealed.At the moment, Karabchevsky said, the theory shows how cylindrical nano-particles with a refractive index of 1.3 can be made invisible. Other objects, both metal and non-metal, can become invisible as well, using the theory proposed by the Light on a Chip group, she said. Israeli researchers say they have theoretically developed a breakthrough “cloaking carpet” that would render an object placed on it invisible.According to a recent study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, scientists from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) have conceived a new method that deflects and scatters light away from a “cloaking” chip surface so that objects laid upon it can’t be seen.“We have engineered a new kind of meta-surface, an artificial material on a chip that can be put on any object so that it manages to create a new path for the light, deflecting light from the object and rendering it invisible,” said Dr. Alina Karabchevsky, head of BGU’s Light-on-a-Chip Group and a faculty member of the BGU Unit of Electro-Optical Engineering and the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology.In a phone interview with The Times of Israel, she called the method “hiding above the carpet.”The visual ability of humans and animals stems from the interaction of light, eyes and brains: we have the ability to see because light from an object can move through space and reach our eyes. Objects we see are actually reflecting light into our eyes.Now the researchers say that they have devised a way to deflect light and stop it from hitting objects, so that the light is not reflected to us and the objects are therefore invisible to our sight.“We have created a new path for the light,” she said. “The artificial material on a chip makes the light bend around the object, resulting in the invisibility of the object.”The interesting part of their cloaking design, she said, was that if the object covers 70 percent of the meta-surface, or what she calls the carpet, it can be concealed.At the moment, Karabchevsky said, the theory shows how cylindrical nano-particles with a refractive index of 1.3 can be made invisible. BEIRUT (AP) — A Syrian war monitoring group on Tuesday raised the death toll from airstrikes on a market in a northern, rebel-held town in Syria the previous day to 61 as rescue workers continued searching for victims buried under the rubble.According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, there were at least three airstrikes on the market in the town of Atareb.Those killed included six women, five children and three police officers, according to the monitoring group. The Observatory’s director, Rami Abdurrahman, says the rest were male civilians.Atareb and the countryside around it remain outside the control of the government in Damascus. But as the terror group sought more executive and legislative powers following Israel’s 2000 withdrawal, it worked to funnel some of its support through state institutions to reach the broader public.Another turning point came in 2008, when heavily armed Hezbollah fighters seized control of vast parts of Beirut, flexing its power domestically for the first time. The show of force followed attempts by Lebanon’s Western-backed government to curb the terror group’s influence by dismantling its telecommunication network.Hezbollah has been the most powerful player in Lebanon’s politics ever since. A Lebanese paper closely aligned with the Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah on Tuesday published an alleged “secret document” that purports to show the Saudis are willing to normalize relations with Israel as part of a US-led Israeli-Palestinian peace effort and unite the region against Iran.The alleged document, published by the Al Akhbar daily, is a letter from the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir to the crown prince, Mohammed Bin Salman, explaining why it’s in the kingdom’s interest to normalize relations with Israel.The letter has no date.“I have the honor to submit to you the draft of the plan to establish relations between the kingdom and the State of Israel, based on the strategic partnership agreement with the United States of America, which was discussed with the secretary of state of the United States of America,” the alleged letter from the foreign minister to the crown prince opens.In May, after a visit from US President Donald Trump to Saudi Arabia, the two sides agreed to form a new strategic partnership, the White House said.The letter goes on to say that a rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Israel has risks for the kingdom due to the strength of the Palestinian cause among Muslims. Hariri claimed he was the target of a Hezbollah assassination plot.On Sunday night, Hariri gave his first TV interview, attacking Iran and its Hezbollah proxy and claiming that he would return to Lebanon in the coming days to formally submit his resignation to Lebanese President Michel Aoun.In April, Republican Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard accused the Lebanese paper al Akhbar of fabricating an entire conversation, complete with direct quotations from the alleged meeting, between her and US President Donald Trump.Al Akhbar reported Trump supposedly told Gabbard to bring Syrian President Bashar Assad a message.However, Gabbard said she had met with Assad in January without Trump’s knowledge, the Huffington Post reported.
