Hasta la vista, habibi-Israel developing terminator bots, minister claims-Ayoub Kara says ‘impossible to destroy’ androids will be able to assassinate heads of Hamas and Hezbollah terror groups-By Times of Israel staff February 25, 2017, 6:42 pm

Israel is developing terminator robots that will be capable of assassinating terrorist leaders in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, a Likud party minister claimed Saturday.Speaking at a cultural event in the southern city of Beersheba, minister-without-portfolio Ayoub Kara said such robots will be able to enter enemy territory and kill the leaders of terror groups targeting Israel without putting soldiers in harm’s way.“The robot that can take out [Hezbollah leader Hassan] Nasrallah and the heads of Hamas is on the way,” he said.Asked if he was confusing the robot he described with a science fiction novel, Kara pointed to military technologies currently deployed by the IDF, such as drones and the Iron Dome missile defense, as proof that the seemingly unbelievable can be possible.“Did anyone believe it there would be Iron Dome five or 10 years ago? Did anyone believe it would be possible to launch a Qassam [rocket] and someone will [be able to] get rid of it and destroy it in the air?”In addition to killing the leaders of terror groups, Kara also said that the robotic soldiers will be able to enter attack tunnels such as those employed by Hamas against Israel during the 2014 Gaza War “and chase after these rats that are underground and eliminate them. It doesn’t return without destroying them.”Kara said that the development of such a robot would eliminate the need for Israeli soldiers to risk being endangered when fighting in enemy territory, while also claiming that the robot will be indestructible.“It is impossible to destroy [the robot], only it can destroy,” he said, as the robot will be built from “special material.”Kara refused to reveal further details on the robot, saying he did not want to “again be entangled” in controversy, having garnered attention for a number of recent provocative actions and statements. In November, Kara posted to his Facebook page details of a security-related incident involving the Jewish state, all elements of which are still under a gag order. The post was quickly taken down, but not before journalists and others saw the information.A month earlier Kara drew condemnation from the Foreign Ministry when, during a visit to Italy, he suggested that powerful earthquakes in that country were divine retribution for anti-Israel actions in the United Nations.

Hamas blames Egypt for deaths of 3 from toxic gas in Gaza tunnel-Five others injured in digging accident on Rafah border while attempting to fix a shaft destroyed by the Egyptian army-By Itamar Sharon and Times of Israel staff February 25, 2017, 5:37 pm

Hamas has accused the Egyptian military for the deaths of three Palestinians in a tunnel beneath the Gaza-Sinai border on Saturday. The three died in a smuggling tunnel between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula early Saturday, and five were injured, after the group inhaled toxic gas during attempts to repair the tunnel. The tunnel was destroyed in an Egyptian army border operation in Rafah, and the Palestinians were working to rebuild it when they were exposed to the gas.Hamas condemned the “Egyptian operation” in a statement, saying the eight were part of a group trying to renew operations in the tunnel.“There’s no no justification for the use of such dangerous methods against civilians under siege,” the terror group said.Tunnel deaths have been a common occurrence recently. Last year, 22 members of Hamas’s armed wing were killed while “preparing equipment,” the majority in a string of tunnel collapses, the terror group said last month.Gaza terrorists have dug dozens of tunnels, many reaching across the border into Israel, to launch attacks in the Jewish state.Israel destroyed many of them during its 2014 war with Hamas, but Hamas has since been rebuilding the network.Dov Lieber contributed to this report.

Merkel: Keep working on the two-state solution-German leader sees ‘no other possibility becoming reality to achieve a peace process’-By AP and Times of Israel staff February 25, 2017, 12:12 pm

BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel is stressing the need to work for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after US President Donald Trump signaled that he could accept a different outcome.Merkel’s comments in her weekly video message Saturday came ahead of a March 2 visit to regional power Egypt, where she said she will discuss the matter with President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.Trump said earlier this month he could accept a two-state solution or a single-state arrangement if it is agreed upon by all sides. His UN ambassador then insisted the US absolutely supports a two-state solution.Merkel said: “I think we must continue on the way to a two-state solution. I see no other possibility becoming reality to achieve a peace process.”Trump on Thursday expressed a preference for the two-state solution, but again said he would be happy with any framework acceptable to the two sides.“No, I like the two-state solution,” Trump told Reuters in an interview, in response to a question on whether he had backed away from that framework, which for decades has been the internationally backed formula for resolving the conflict. “But I ultimately like what the both parties like,” Trump added.“People have been talking about it for so many years now,” the president went on, and noted: “It so far hasn’t worked.” He then repeated: “I like this two-state solution, but I am satisfied with whatever both parties agree with.”During his White House press conference with Netanyahu last Wednesday, Trump broke with longstanding US policy by saying two states were not necessarily the only acceptable solution to the conflict. “I’m looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like,” he said.

He was intercepted by a police patrol and shot by an officer following a short standoff. He has been taken to a hospital. There was no immediate word on the man’s possible motives or where he came from.Schaetzle said he couldn’t confirm local media reports that the man was mentally disturbed, but said a terrorist background is not suspected and the man appears to have acted alone.

IDF jet downs Hamas drone off the Gaza coast-Army says the UAV never entered Israeli airspace, vows not to allow violations of sovereignty-By Judah Ari Gross February 23, 2017, 4:39 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

An Israeli Air Force fighter jet shot down a Hamas drone flying from the Gaza Strip toward the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday afternoon, the army said. The unmanned aerial vehicle never flew into or over Israeli territory, the army noted. The drone crashed into the water off the coast of Gaza.“The IDF will not allow any violation of [Israel’s] airspace and will operate with determination against any attempt to do so,” the IDF said in a statement.Details regarding the size and design of the drone were not immediately released by the military.Hamas did not immediately confirm that it had launched the unmanned aerial vehicle; however, the terror group has said in the past that it possesses such capabilities.Unmanned aerial vehicles have infrequently been launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel. A similar incident occurred last September. In that case as well, IAF jets were scrambled to shoot down a Hamas-launched drone off the Gaza coast.“Hamas has been developing its drone capabilities, especially in the last two years,” IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said at the time.In addition, a UAV was sent from Gaza in June 2015, and a handful were launched during the war in the Strip in 2014.The Defense Ministry has prevented a number of attempts to smuggle small, commercial drones into the Gaza Strip. In May, a shipment of packages sent through the Israeli postal service was intercepted en route to the Gaza Strip, containing disassembled drones, rifle scopes, radio receivers, cellphone signal boosters and video transmitters, a statement from the Defense Ministry said.In February, the ministry’s Border Crossing Authority foiled an attempt to smuggle several drones, of different sizes and types, into the coastal enclave. The drones, all of which were equipped with quality cameras, were apparently set to be used for spying on Israeli targets, the Defense Ministry said.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Iran requests 950 tons of uranium from Kazakhstan-Tehran says it needs the material to help develop its civil reactor program-By AFP February 25, 2017, 11:38 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s nuclear chief said Saturday that the country had requested to buy 950 tons of uranium concentrate from Kazakhstan over the next three years to help develop its civil reactor program. The request has been made to the body that oversees the nuclear deal signed between Iran and world powers in 2015.Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, told the ISNA news agency that the purchase was supposed to happen “within three years.”“650 tons will enter the country in two consignments and 300 tons will enter Iran in the third year,” he said.Salehi said the final shipment of concentrate, known as yellow cake, would be turned into uranium hexafluoride gas and sold back to Kazakhstan — its first international sale of the compound which is used in the uranium enrichment process.Under the nuclear deal, many of Iran’s centrifuges were mothballed but it has the right to enrich uranium to a level of 3.5 percent and sell it abroad.Nuclear weapons require uranium enriched to 80% or more.Salehi said Iran has already received around 382 tons of yellow cake, primarily from Russia, since the nuclear deal came into force in January last year.Under the deal, Iran is allowed to run around 5,000 “IR-1” centrifuges and has been testing more advanced models that can produce greater quantities of enriched uranium — all under the strict supervision of the UN atomic agency.

Palestinian terror leader urges Iran to join ‘all-out war’ on Israel, then Jordan-Ahmad Jibril, head of Lebanon-based PFLP-GC, calls for liberation campaign ‘in the Golan, in the Galilee, from Rosh Hanikra to Aqaba’-By Times of Israel staff February 25, 2017, 3:08 pm

The head of a Palestinian terrorist group in Lebanon said he would like to see Iranian soldiers take part in an “all-out war” to liberate Palestine, and that the future Palestinian conquest would include an invasion of both Israel and Jordan.Ahmad Jibril, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, told Hezbollah’s Al-Mayadeen TV on February 17 that his group wants “to see the revolutionary fighters from [Iran] in the Galilee.” His remarks were translated by watchdog group MEMRI on Friday.Jibril spoke of spoke of creating “an axis of resistance” against Israel that would include Syria, Iraq, Iran and Hezbollah — all devoted to “the liberation of Palestine from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River.”Afterwards, he said, “we will enter Jordan, whether King Abdullah likes it or not.”He added that “The war with this enemy will be an all-out war… in the Golan, in South Lebanon, in the Galilee…[and] will be waged from Rosh Hanikra to Aqaba.“Hezbollah is getting read for it, and so are we.”Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Monday doubled down on his recent saber-rattling against Israel and warned that his terror group would not hold back from attacking sensitive Israeli targets if the Jewish state goes to war with Lebanon.During a television interview with Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, the terror chief repeated a previous threat to fire rockets at Israel’s nuclear reactor in Dimona and at a huge ammonia storage tank in Haifa.Hezbollah will not keep to any “red lines” in a future war with Israel, Nasrallah cautioned.“In the face of Israel’s threats to destroy Lebanon’s infrastructure, we will not abide by red lines, especially regarding Haifa’s ammonia and the nuclear reactor in Dimona. Hezbollah possesses the full courage for this,” he said, according to an English translation of his comments reported by the Naharnet website.“We are not advocates of war. We are in the defense position,” Nasrallah said.On Thursday Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sai during a visit to Lebanon that Palestinian factions were committed to preserving security in refugee camps around Lebanon.Stuart Winer and AP contributed to this report.

Administration 'assessing whether embassy should be moved' to Jerusalem-Pence to Republican Jews: No nuclear Iran, still thinking over embassy move-‘We will never allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, this is my solemn promise,’ VP tells RJC to standing ovation at Adelson’s Vegas hotel-By Ron Kampeas February 25, 2017, 3:57 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

LAS VEGAS (JTA) — Vice President Mike Pence pledged to Jewish Republicans that the Trump administration would “never allow” Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, but walked back President Donald Trump’s promise to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.“We told the ayatollahs of Iran they should check the calendar, there’s a new president in the Oval Office,” Pence said Friday addressing the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership conference during Shabbat dinner.“President Trump will never allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, this is my solemn promise to you,” he said, to a standing ovation in the ballroom of the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas, owned by Sheldon Adelson, a major backer of Republicans and pro-Israel causes.Jewish Republicans, as well as Israel’s leadership and much of the centrist pro-Israel community, reviled the nuclear deal reached by the Obama administration with Iran which swapped sanctions relief for a rollback of Iran’s nuclear program. Former president Barack Obama, who also had pledged to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, had said that the deal was the best means of doing so.Pence, notably, did not say the Trump administration would kill the deal, however. Trump’s top aides have said that increasing enforcement of the deal is the better option at this stage.Pence also substantially walked back Trump’s campaign pledge to move the embassy to Jerusalem, saying the administration was “assessing whether the embassy should be moved,” to tepid applause.Trump himself has walked back his embassy pledge since he assumed office last month, but sending Pence, who for years has been intimately close to the pro-Israel community, to deliver the message to a fiercely pro-Israel audience seemed to put an end to hopes that any move would happen soon, if at all.Pence also once again reassured the group to “rest assured” that the Trump administration would combat anti-Semitism. Jewish groups – including some, like the RJC, that have supported Trump – have been alarmed at the perceived insensitivity in the administration to sensibilities about attacks on Jews, particularly in the wake of a spike in bomb threats called into Jewish community centers.Pence assured the RJC that he and Trump would work tirelessly on foreign and domestic issues important to the group, such as enacting business-friendly policies at home and supporting Israel abroad.“If the world knows nothing else, the world will know this: America stands with Israel,” Pence said. The group of Republican donors and Jewish leaders was among the first to hear from the new vice president. Former Vice President Dick Cheney introduced Pence. The roughly 500 attendees also were set to hear from Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Joni Ernst of Iowa and Lindsay Graham of South Carolina .Pence told the RJC that America’s bonds with Israel had already grown stronger under the young administration. He shared stories from his trip to Germany last weekend — his first abroad as vice president. He’d paid a visit to the former Dachau concentration camp, where thousands of Austrian and German Jews were among those imprisoned and killed. He was joined on the tour by a survivor of the Holocaust who was at Dachau when it was liberated by American soldiers at the end of World War II.Pence also talked about how this week he had made a surprise visit to a Jewish cemetery in Missouri where more than 150 gravestones had been toppled and vandalized.“Let me be clear, we condemn these vile acts of vandalism and those perpetrated them in the strongest possible terms,” he said. “Hatred and antisemitism have no place in the United States of America.”In Las Vegas, the vice president effusively praised the Adelsons from the stage, saying that they “in so many ways have given America a second chance” through their political work in the US and Israel. Adelson and his wife, Miriam, gave more than $20 million to a pro-Trump super PAC, making them among Trump’s most generous benefactors, campaign records show.“Rest assured we’re going to keep our end of the bargain, too,” Pence said, thanking the Adelsons and RJC for “steadfast support” throughout the campaign.AP contributed to this report.

Pence to Republican Jews: World will know US supports Israel-At RJC conference at Adelson casino in Las Vegas, VP praises top donor, says Israel has already grown stronger under Trump-By Julie Bykowicz February 25, 2017, 8:14 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence assured the Republican Jewish Coalition that he and President Donald Trump will work tirelessly on foreign and domestic issues important to the group, such as enacting business-friendly policies at home and supporting Israel abroad.“If the world knows nothing else, the world will know this: America stands with Israel,” Pence told the group Friday night. The Republican administration is “assessing” whether to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, he said, and has put Iran “on notice.”Pence’s words served as evidence of the fruits of years of the politically active group’s labors. Its annual conference at billionaire donor Sheldon Adelson’s casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip has become a de facto campaign stop for Republican presidential candidates over the past few years. The RJC also drew the entire GOP presidential field to its December 2015 forum in Washington. Now, with the first Republican White House in eight years, the group of Republican donors and Jewish leaders was among the first to hear from the new vice president. Former Vice President Dick Cheney introduced Pence. The roughly 500 attendees also are expected to hear from Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Joni Ernst of Iowa and Lindsay Graham of South Carolina this weekend.Pence told the RJC that America’s bonds with Israel had already grown stronger under the young administration. President Barack Obama did not have a close relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and many Republican Jews saw the Obama administration as insufficiently supportive of Israel.Pence also ticked through Trump’s domestic agenda, saying the president had already brought back American jobs. “This White House is in the promise-keeping business,” he said. The vice president shared stories from his trip to Germany last weekend — his first abroad as vice president. He’d paid a visit to the former Dachau concentration camp, where thousands of Austrian and German Jews were among those imprisoned and killed. He was joined on the tour by a survivor of the Holocaust who was at Dachau when it was liberated by American soldiers at the end of World War II.Pence also talked about how this week he had made a surprise visit to a Jewish cemetery in Missouri where more than 150 gravestones had been toppled and vandalized. Speaking through a bullhorn at the site, he said there was “no place in America for hatred or acts of prejudice or violence or anti-Semitism” and then picked up a rake and helped clean up the cemetery. In Las Vegas, the vice president effusively praised the Adelsons from the stage, saying that they “in so many ways have given America a second chance” through their political work in the US and Israel. Adelson and his wife, Miriam, gave more than $20 million to a pro-Trump super PAC, making them among Trump’s most generous benefactors, campaign records show.“Rest assured we’re going to keep our end of the bargain, too,” Pence said, thanking the Adelsons and RJC for “steadfast support” throughout the campaign.Yet, like so many staples of party politics — including the conservative activist conference taking place this week near Washington — the RJC has fit uneasily with Trump.Adelson, who helps finance the RJC, didn’t openly support Trump until the final weeks of the presidential campaign. The wariness was mutual. Trump had called his GOP rivals “puppets” of Adelson and prompted major heartburn among Republican Jews with his freewheeling comments at the 2015 RJC forum.Trump has been appreciative. At one of his final campaign stops, in Las Vegas, he called the couple “really incredible people” who have been “so supportive” The Adelsons also were front and center for Trump’s swearing-in last month, and Sheldon Adelson was one of Trump’s first dinner guests at the White House. And Trump picked the leader of the super PAC that landed Adelson’s money, Chicago businessman Todd Ricketts, as deputy commerce secretary.

Outcry after White House bars top US media from briefing-News organizations, former top officials blast move as ‘unacceptable,’ an ‘insult to democratic ideals’ and ‘more Nixonian than Nixon’-By AFP February 25, 2017, 3:26 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — Major US media outlets condemned as “unacceptable” and an “insult to democratic ideals” a decision by President Donald Trump’s White House to bar several organizations, including CNN and The New York Times, from a daily press briefing. In an escalation in the administration’s war on the media, the White House Friday excluded some outlets that have provided critical coverage from an off-camera event that replaced the traditional on-camera daily briefing.Friendly conservative outlets like Fox News, the One America News Network and Breitbart News were allowed to attend, while the BBC, The Los Angeles Times and others were excluded.Trump on Friday decried the media as the “enemy of the people,” a day after his top strategist promised relations with the press will get “worse every day.”A number of news outlets that regularly cover the White House as part of the “pool,” including newswires Reuters and Bloomberg, attended the briefing. The Associated Press boycotted in protest. AFP protested being excluded, despite being in the “pool,” and attended the briefing uninvited. The White House Correspondents Association said it was “protesting strongly” against the White House decision, and promised to bring it up with White House staff.During the off-camera briefing spokesman Sean Spicer said that the White House has shown an “abundance of accessibility… making ourselves, our team and our briefing room more accessible than probably any previous administration.”It is not uncommon for Republican and Democratic administrations to brief select reporters, but the event was initially billed as a regular briefing open to credentialed media.CNN anchor Jake Tapper decried the move as “un-American.”“This is an unacceptable development by the Trump White House,” CNN’s communications department wrote on Twitter.“Apparently this is how they retaliate when you report facts they don’t like. We’ll keep reporting regardless.”The New York Times wrote in an editorial that the exclusion was an “unmistakable insult to democratic ideals.”Several outlets refered to a December interview in which Spicer told Politico that the Trump White House would never ban a news outlet. “Conservative, liberal or otherwise, I think that’s what makes a democracy a democracy versus a dictatorship,” he said.Media organizations were not alone in defending the free press.“Trump is supposed to be a public servant, and the truth is a public good,” said Robert Reich, a UC Berkeley economist, former labor secretary and a prominent Democratic figure.“But he continues to lie incessantly, and punish media that call him out,” Reich wrote on Facebook. “These are the sort of antics we’d expect from a two-bit dictator but not from the President of the United States.”John Dean, the White House counsel for Republican president Richard Nixon in the 1970s, described the Trump media bashing as “more Nixonian than Nixon.”Nixon blasted the media as “the enemy” behind closed doors, Dean, 78, told the Democracy Now! radio show on Friday.“The big difference is, Trump is doing this right out” and challenging the US constitution’s first amendment that guarantees freedom of speech and of the press. He described it as “very startling and very troubling.”“Nixon failed, and he had a deep reservoir of ill will to draw on when he got himself in real trouble. And I think Trump is creating the same problem for himself.”Trump’s hostility towards the press “may be the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime,” said William McRaven, a retired admiral and Navy SEAL who oversaw the raid that killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011.McRaven made the remarks at the college of communication at the University of Texas at Austin, according to the student newspaper. McRaven became head of the UT system after retiring in 2014.“Flaws and all, I believe the free press is our country’s most important institution,” McRaven, who has a degree in journalism, added in a blog post Thursday. The United States “has the finest press corps in the world, bar none,” he wrote.

Defending Trump, ex-envoy to US says nobody blamed Obama for leftist anti-Semitism-New Jersey-born deputy minister says Jew-hatred is not new in the US; hails PM for being ‘responsible’ in not criticizing US president’s Holocaust statement that didn’t mention Jews-By Raphael Ahren February 23, 2017, 3:18 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Those who charge US President Donald Trump with fueling right-wing anti-Semitism should recall that no one had accused his predecessor, Barack Obama, of spurring anti-Semitism from the left, Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy MK Michael Oren said Thursday.Oren, a former Israeli ambassador to Washington, also defended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to speak out about the White House’s statement for International Holocaust Memorial Day, which failed to mention the Jewish people, saying the prime minister was engaging in “responsible” policymaking.“Too much emphasis is put on what people say, not on what people do. The question is not what’s being said, but what’s being done,” Oren told The Times of Israel. “Yes, there is an uptick in anti-Semitism, but the conversation about it is not going in the right direction.”In his meetings with bipartisan congressional delegations from the US, Oren said, he is often told that it is less important that hate crimes are condemned and more important that they are stopped. “The question is what is done operatively to combat and prevent them.”In recent weeks, amid an uptick in anti-Semitic attacks, including dozens of hoax bomb threats to Jewish institutions, various US-Jewish leaders took the new administration to task for ostensibly failing to forcefully denounce rising anti-Semitism there. Trump shouted down an Orthodox Jewish reporter who tried to ask him about the uptick last week, declaring that “I am the least anti-Semitic person.”On Wednesday, Trump for the first time condemned anti-Semitic hate crimes, such as this week’s desecration of a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis in which 170 gravestones were damaged. Vice President Mike Pence paid a solidarity visit to the vandalized site, and actively aided in the restoration effort.Netanyahu, speaking at a synagogue in Sydney, praised Trump for taking a “strong stand against anti-Semitism.” At a joint press conference with Trump earlier this month, Netanyahu had proclaimed that there was “no greater supporter of the Jewish people and the Jewish state” than the president.Oren, who was a noted historian of US-Israeli history before entering diplomacy and politics, did not deny that Jew-hatred was a growing concern in the US but pointed out that it was by no means a new phenomenon.“Obviously there is problem with anti-Semitism and we have to take it seriously,” said Oren, a member of the centrist Kulanu party. “But there is anti-Semitism on the left, and nobody blamed Obama for that. During my time in Washington [as Israeli ambassador], I never encountered right-wing anti-Semitism, but I experienced a lot of anti-Semitism, mainly on campuses. Ask Jewish students in America if they fear anti-Semitism. They do — not from the right, but from the left.”Just as Obama should not be blamed for these incidents, Trump cannot be blamed for the current wave of attacks apparently inspired by right-wing ideologies, he argued.Anti-Semitism is not new to America, the New Jersey native said, citing incidents from his youth. “It is very precedented. Anti-Semitism was a fact of life when I grew up. I encountered it all the time: our windows were broken, I got into fistfights all the time. There were quotas [for Jews] at Ivy League universities.”The key to confronting today’s anti-Semitism lies in local law enforcement, he said, arguing for greater efforts to trace people calling in bomb threats to Jewish centers and having the FBI put more manpower into fighting the phenomenon.“When my synagogue was bombed, the FBI showed up the next day,” he recalled. He was referring to an April 1971 attack on the Jewish Center of West Orange, which took place on the night racist American-Israeli rabble-rouser Rabbi Meir Kahane was scheduled to address the Conservative community.Oren, who served as ambassador to the US between 2009 and 2013, declined to comment on Netanyahu’s previous silence on the rise of anti-Semitism in America and over the Holocaust Day statement. The prime minister initially refused to comment on the fact that the White House omitted any reference to genocide against the Jews in its statement, and he later denounced the US-Jewish community’s protests over the matter as “misplaced.”While he himself does not agree with the White House explanation for what it called an “inclusive” statement — that other people suffered as well during the Holocaust — Oren said he would not “go out and criticize” the new administration.Rather, he urged that Trump and his team should be given time before being taking to task over such issues, quipping that it takes a new administration half a year before staffers even know where the bathrooms are in the White House.“We [Israelis] have crucial issues that affect the security of each and every one of us,” he said, indicating that discussions over Iran, Syria and the Palestinians should take precedence in Jerusalem’s dealings with the new administration.Netanyahu’s refusal to comment on the controversial Holocaust Day statement “was “responsible and clear-sighted” policy in that it focuses on the bigger picture, Oren said.Obama, early in his first term, indicated that Israel was created because of the Holocaust, Oren recalled. “This was a problematic narrative, because it basically denies Jewish history. But we didn’t make a big deal about it. It was a new administration and we had important things to discuss.”It took Obama several years before publicly setting the record straight, when in a speech to the UN he talked about the millennia-old Jewish roots in the Land of Israel, Oren said. “Let’s give Trump that same opportunity [to correct mistakes] and not jump at every little thing he says.”

US senator to reintroduce bill cutting funds to PA for payouts to terrorists-Republican Lindsey Graham to bring back Taylor Force Act, named after American veteran killed in Palestinian stabbing attack in Jaffa-By Eric Cortellessa February 23, 2017, 3:25 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham will reintroduce legislation next week that would cut US funding to the Palestinian Authority if it continues to provide monetary support to the families of those who commit acts of terror against Israelis and others. The bill, known as the Taylor Force Act, was first introduced last year by Graham with former Indiana Republican Sen. Dan Coats and Missouri Republican Sen. Roy Blunt. It was referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at the time, but never came up for a vote. The legislation is named after former US army officer Taylor Force, who was stabbed to death in March 2016 by a Palestinian assailant while visiting Tel Aviv. Force was a graduate student at Vanderbilt University and was traveling with other students on a program studying global entrepreneurship. He was 29 years old at the time and had served in Iraq and Afghanistan.Graham’s office announced in a press release Wednesday he would reintroduce the measure during a press conference on Tuesday, February 28.Introducing the legislation last September, Graham said it “shines a light on a very real problem.”“Why is the Palestinian Authority paying young Palestinians to commit acts of terror against innocent Americans like Taylor Force or Israelis? The Palestinians need to decide – do they condemn these horrible acts or do they reward them?” he said.“You can’t be a partner in peace when you are paying people to commit terrorist acts. The choice the Palestinians make will determine the type of relationship they have with the United States in the years to come.”US foreign aid to the Palestinians is already under strict congressional oversight and restrictions based on concern that it could be “diverted to Palestinian terrorist groups.”All aid is thus relegated to US-administered project assistance and budget support for the Palestinian Authority, along with donations going to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
