(Reuters) - A powerful tornado struck southern Mississippi before dawn on Saturday, killing four people and causing widespread property damage, state and local officials said as they warned residents to brace for a second round of severe storms.The twister, which touched down at about 3:45 a.m. Central time (0945 GMT), reduced many buildings to splinters, downed power lines and flipped over numerous cars, according to photographs shared by officials on social media and footage aired by local news outlets.The tornado ripped a path of destruction 25 miles long and a half-mile wide across parts of four counties. BEIJING (AP) — Authorities in China say they've recovered the bodies of 12 people killed inside a hotel overrun by a landslide.State media reported Sunday that rescuers were able to pull out everyone trapped underneath rocks and debris after the Friday night landslide in Hunan province.The official Xinhua News Agency said 3,000 cubic meters (105,000 cubic feet) of debris tumbled down a slope behind the three-story hotel in Nanzhang county. The largest rock weighed 150 tons. The amount of debris hampered rescuers worried about the rocks caving in or sliding further.The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.Rescuers earlier had pulled five survivors from the debris, two of whom died in a hospital.Hilly and densely populated Hunan is frequently struck by landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

Pumanque (Chile) (AFP) - Authorities declared a state of catastrophe in central Chile as crews Saturday fought vast forest fires described as the worst in decades.More than 450 square kilometers (175 square miles) were ablaze in the O'Higgins region -- an area roughly the size of Vienna or Tel Aviv.As fire and emergency crews were brought in, officials evacuated 200 people from the mostly rural area south of the capital Santiago. Some 30 homes were affected in Cardenal Caro and Colchagua provinces, the National Emergency Office (ONEMI) said.A local ONEMI official, Josefina Lopez, told AFP that no one was hurt but there was economic damage.Agriculture Minister Carlos Furche told national radio the disaster was "a sort of earthquake" for the region.President Michelle Bachelet took time out of hosting a visit by French counterpart Francois Hollande to monitor the situation and declare the state of catastrophe, which allows soldiers to be used to help battle the fire. A Toronto Public Health official says one person was admitted to hospital and nearly 200 have reported becoming sick after an illness at a Humber College residence that began earlier this week.Dr. Michael Finkelstein, an associate medical officer of health, said about 40 people initially visited emergency rooms after students reportedly began feeling ill at Humber College's north campus on Thursday. Another 11 went to emergency rooms overnight and on Saturday morning.Only one was admitted to hospital, but has since been released.Public health officials have not determined a cause for the "cluster of symptoms" but Finkelstein said the sudden illness could be due to a virus."While investigations at this point are more consistent with a virus that is being transmitted from person to person, TPH will continue to investigate over the weekend," he said.30 taken to hospital on Thursday-More than 70 students, all of whom live at one residence on the north campus at Highway 27 and Finch Avenue West, initially fell ill on Thursday night. Originally from Welland, Ont., she is living at the residence affected by the outbreak.Walker has been handing out plastic gloves and masks and making what she calls "easy to digest" soup."People are really stressed out. They are really anxious about it," she said.Some students who fell ill have gone home, but others, whose families live considerable distances away, have not been able to do so, she said. People have not wanted to visit the campus after the outbreak.Walker, who is happy that she has not come down with the illness, said the residence at the north campus is made up of three buildings connected by a cafeteria and dining hall and the buildings have become quiet as students stay in their rooms to recover. The residence has single and shared rooms."It's usually upbeat here, but it's become a very isolated place," she said. "My mother said it's like we're living inside a cruise ship. But all of the students are concerned. But it was Trump who spread inaccuracies about the size of the crowds at his swearing in.Standing in front of a memorial for fallen CIA agents, Trump assured intelligence officials, "I am so behind you." He made no mention of his repeated criticism of the intelligence agencies following the election, including his public challenges of their high-confidence assessment that Russia meddled in the White House race to help him win."There is nobody that feels stronger about the intelligence community and CIA than Donald Trump," he said, blaming any suggestion of a "feud" on the media.Trump's decision to travel to CIA headquarters so quickly after taking office was seen as an attempt at a fresh start with the intelligence agencies he will now rely on for guidance as he makes weighty national security decisions. He made the remarks Saturday at a program in New Delhi organized by the women's chapter of an industry group, according to the press statement.He said the world is moving toward peace and non-violence, and he hopes Trump and Putin will come closer and work toward creating global peace.The Dalai Lama had said in Mongolia in November that he had "no worries" about Trump's election as U.S. president and looked forward to meeting him after he took office. Trump was inaugurated Friday.The Dalai Lama has met former U.S. presidents, including four meetings with Barack Obama. Such meetings anger Beijing, which accuses the Tibetan leader of trying to split Tibet from China. The Dalai Lama says he simply wants a higher degree of autonomy under Chinese rule.The Dalai Lama has been based in India's northern hill town of Dharmsala since fleeing Tibet during an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

Islamic State blows up hotel to prevent landing in west Mosul, witnesses say-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-January 22, 2017

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Islamic State detonated explosives in the largest hotel in western Mosul on Friday, in an attempt to destroy it and prevent Iraqi forces from using it as a landing spot or base in their offensive to capture the city, witnesses said on Sunday.The Mosul Hotel, shaped as a step pyramid, appeared to be leaning to one side after the explosions, said two witnesses contacted by phone, requesting anonymity as the militants punish by death those caught communicating with the outside world.The Mosul Hotel sits alongside the Tigris river that cuts the city into two halves. The explosion comes as Iraqi forces appear about to take full control of the eastern side and prepare to attack the western bank.Iraqi forces launched in October a campaign backed by a U.S.-led coalition to take back Mosul from the hardline Sunni group which captured the city in 2014, declaring from its Grand Mosque a "caliphate" that also spanned parts of Syria.Mosul is the last major city stronghold under Islamic State control in Iraq.(Reporting by Maher Chmaytelli; Editing by Mark Potter)

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani government official says the death toll from a bomb blast in the Kurram tribal region has risen to 25 after three injured people died overnight.Shahid Khan, an assistant tribal administrator, said Sunday an investigation revealed that 12 kilograms (26.5 pounds) of explosives improvised with steal balls were used in the bombing. The attack took place in the crowded fruit and vegetable market in the Shiite dominated town of Parachinar near the Afghan border on Saturday.Khan said more than 50 wounded were still being treated, some in critical condition.Khan said some vendors were detained for questioning.Lashker-e-Jhangvi, a banned sectarian militant group that has attacked minority Shiites Muslims in the past, claimed responsibility for the attack.
