A synagogue in the Greek city of Ioannina was vandalized this week, with a number of swastikas spray-painted on the side of the building as well as some of the neighboring houses.“Racist vandals defaced the exterior of the surrounding wall of the historic synagogue of Ioannina, situated in the old walled city, the Kastro (Castle). Vandals [also] drew swastikas also on some houses of the surrounding area,” the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece wrote in a statement on its website.The organization “expressed Greek Jewry’s repudiation for this hideous act and urged the authorities to work for the arrest of the perpetrators as well as for the adequate protection of the synagogue,”according to the statement.Ioannina Mayor Thomas Begas condemned the attack, saying “the image of the swastika does not only desecrate the Jewish synagogue; it also desecrates the memory of thousands of fellow men, victims of fascism,” according to Greek website Ekathimerini.

A Hamas operative was picked up by the Israeli Navy for attempting to smuggle explosive materials from Egypt into the Gaza Strip, the Shin Bet security service announced on Tuesday after a gag order on the case was lifted.Khamis Jihad Said Ara’ish, 24, was arrested last month after his ship “deviated from the approved sailing area,” the Shin Bet said.On August 25, the IDF said Israeli naval forces patrolling off the coast of the Gaza Strip were fired upon from the shore after shooting a Palestinian suspect during an arrest at sea.According to the Shin Bet, 24-year-old Ara’ish told interrogators he had been involved in a number of smuggling efforts since 2012 that brought materials into the Strip for the purpose of manufacturing weapons for Hamas.His interrogation provided Israeli security forces with “detailed information about Hamas’s naval smuggling route between the Gaza Strip and Egpyt, along with information about the use of fisherman and smugglers along the route,” the agency said.Ara’ishi and “his associates” had previously attempted to smuggle explosive materials into Gaza in April, but were prevented from doing so by the navy, the Shin Bet said.During his interrogation, Ara’ishi told investigators he had also tried to carry out an attack against IDF troops in 2014, “performing lookouts and purchasing weaponry in order to get a promotion.”“The information that came up in the investigation, along with the investigations of other recently arrested Hamas terrorist operatives, revealed more of the efforts made by Hamas for progressing its violent terrorist activities, this time by taking advantage of the easing of restrictions that Israel has allowed for Gazan fishermen,” the Shin Bet said.Israel has maintained a naval blockade of the Hamas-ruled coastal strip since the terror group violently took over the territory from the Palestinian Authority in 2007. The Hamas terror group recently rejected an Israeli offer to free 18 Palestinians and hand over 19 bodies seized during the 2014 war in Gaza in exchange for the bodies of two IDF soldiers who fell in the 50-day conflict, Israel’s chief negotiator Lior Lotan said Tuesday.Lotan told Channel 2 News that Hamas also refused to hand over two mentally unstable Israelis who crossed into Gaza of their own accord, and are believed held by the organization, in exchange for dozens of Gazans who have been arrested after crossing into Israel illegally.Instead, Lotan said, Hamas demanded that Israel release Palestinian prisoners who are not from Gaza and who are not connected to the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge.Lotan said that by making these demands, Hamas was going against “norms throughout the world at the end of a confrontation.”“You exchange captives and soldiers,” he said. “Hamas doesn’t think in the way that we would expect an organization with a political infrastructure to think, an organization that rules a population.”He added: “In an unprecedented fashion, Hamas responded negatively to the proposal and laid down preconditions… We cannot accept these preconditions, it wouldn’t be right. We have enough tools and avenues to explore despite this.”Lotan said that at a time when the Gaza population is asking Israel and the world to help rehabilitate lives in the Strip, the Hamas leadership is behaving in a contradictory manner by failing to return the soldiers’ bodies and the captive Israelis. “It’s important that the residents of Gaza understand this,” Lotan said.The families of the two fallen soldiers — 22-year-old Staff Sgt. Oron Shaul and 23-year-old Lt. Hadar Goldin — have been pressing the government to secure the return of their bodies since the end of the 2014 conflict. Israel has vowed to get their remains back for burial.Lotan said that Israel had provided medical evidence that Avraham Abera Mengistu and Bedouin Hisham al-Sayed are suffering from mental health problems, making it a humanitarian, rather than a security issue.“We will do everything in our power to bring our boys home,” Lotan told the television. “The objective is clear and we have the tools and experience to succeed.”On Sunday, Mengistu’s family demonstrated outside the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem, marking two years since he went missing.Meanwhile, Simcha and Leah Goldin, Hadar Goldin’s parents, told reporters on Tuesday that Hamas could not expect to receive everything they wanted in a prisoner exchange.“Hamas has to understand that there are no free deals and no free meals,” the family said, according to Channel 10. They called for Israel to place greater pressure on Hamas specifically and Gaza in general, arguing that the terror group would give up the bodies once it understood it had too much to lose by not doing so.Leah and Simcha Goldin will join Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s entourage at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.While in New York, the couple will ask UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to appoint a special envoy to deal with the issue. Simcha Goldin told Channel 2 that the UN was responsible for the situation as their son was killed and his body had been seized during a UN-brokered ceasefire.On Monday, the Oron Shaul’s family announced they would be erecting a new protest tent opposite the Prime Minister’s official residence less than two weeks after his father, Herzl succumbed to cancer.Aviram Shaul, Oron’s brother, told Channel 10 that his father had begged him to continue the family’s efforts to secure Oron’s remains.

A synagogue in the Greek city of Ioannina was vandalized this week, with a number of swastikas spray-painted on the side of the building as well as some of the neighboring houses.“Racist vandals defaced the exterior of the surrounding wall of the historic synagogue of Ioannina, situated in the old walled city, the Kastro (Castle). Vandals [also] drew swastikas also on some houses of the surrounding area,” the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece wrote in a statement on its website.The organization “expressed Greek Jewry’s repudiation for this hideous act and urged the authorities to work for the arrest of the perpetrators as well as for the adequate protection of the synagogue,”according to the statement.Ioannina Mayor Thomas Begas condemned the attack, saying “the image of the swastika does not only desecrate the Jewish synagogue; it also desecrates the memory of thousands of fellow men, victims of fascism,” according to Greek website Ekathimerini.

A Hamas operative was picked up by the Israeli Navy for attempting to smuggle explosive materials from Egypt into the Gaza Strip, the Shin Bet security service announced on Tuesday after a gag order on the case was lifted.Khamis Jihad Said Ara’ish, 24, was arrested last month after his ship “deviated from the approved sailing area,” the Shin Bet said.On August 25, the IDF said Israeli naval forces patrolling off the coast of the Gaza Strip were fired upon from the shore after shooting a Palestinian suspect during an arrest at sea.According to the Shin Bet, 24-year-old Ara’ish told interrogators he had been involved in a number of smuggling efforts since 2012 that brought materials into the Strip for the purpose of manufacturing weapons for Hamas.His interrogation provided Israeli security forces with “detailed information about Hamas’s naval smuggling route between the Gaza Strip and Egpyt, along with information about the use of fisherman and smugglers along the route,” the agency said.Ara’ishi and “his associates” had previously attempted to smuggle explosive materials into Gaza in April, but were prevented from doing so by the navy, the Shin Bet said.During his interrogation, Ara’ishi told investigators he had also tried to carry out an attack against IDF troops in 2014, “performing lookouts and purchasing weaponry in order to get a promotion.”“The information that came up in the investigation, along with the investigations of other recently arrested Hamas terrorist operatives, revealed more of the efforts made by Hamas for progressing its violent terrorist activities, this time by taking advantage of the easing of restrictions that Israel has allowed for Gazan fishermen,” the Shin Bet said.Israel has maintained a naval blockade of the Hamas-ruled coastal strip since the terror group violently took over the territory from the Palestinian Authority in 2007. Israel says the measure is necessary to prevent Hamas from acquiring weapons from overseas. Humanitarian aid is transferred to the Palestinian enclaves through Israeli land crossings.As part of the blockade, fishing boats and other seagoing vessels are limited to traveling close to the coast.In April, Israel extended the distance off the coast that some of the Palestinian territory’s fishermen are allowed to operate in. The lifting of the restrictions allows fishing boats working out of ports in the southern part of Strip to wander up to nine nautical miles (16 km) off the coast. The previous six-mile limit was retained in waters off the north of Gaza.Boats exceeding these limit are at risk of being considered suspicious, and may be fired upon as possible arms-smuggling vessels.The navy has intercepted a number of arms-smuggling vessels in the past and accuses Hamas of “taking advantage” of the recent change in policy.
