Hamas leader threatens next Gaza war will be the last-Haniyeh denies any ‘media statements’ about next conflict, though remarks were reportedly made in a mosque speech-By Dov Lieber July 3, 2016, 12:18 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Senior Hamas leader in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh warned Saturday the next war between Israel and the terror group would be the last, as tensions on Israel’s southern border spiraled over the weekend.Speaking before nighttime prayer in a mosque in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, the former Gaza prime minister said Hamas was not afraid of Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman.“The young men of Gaza have smashed bigger [men] than Liberman, [like former prime minister Ariel] Sharon and his associates,” Haniyeh said, according to the Palestinian news site Paltoday.“The next war will resolve the conflict with the Israeli enemy,” he added.Haniyeh’s office, however, denied on Sunday that the Hamas leader had made any “media statement” or gave an interview to any journalist about the next war.Israel has fought three major conflicts with Hamas since the terror group violently took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.The comments were in response to recent remarks made by a top Israeli defense official — believed to be Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman — that the next “confrontation must be the last in terms of Hamas’s regime.”Haniyeh said in early May that his group was not seeking war with Israel, but would not tolerate Israeli incursions into the Strip. On Saturday, the Israeli Air Force attacked targets belonging to terror groups in the Gaza Strip, hours after a rocket fired from the coastal enclave hit a preschool in the border town of Sderot, causing damage but no injuries. No group in Gaza claimed responsibility for the rocket fire on Sderot, which came hours after Israel announced a lockdown on the West Bank city of Hebron — the area of two deadly attacks on Israelis since Thursday — and cuts in monthly tax payments to the Palestinian Authority due to the money it gives to the families of terrorists.

Top aide to Khamenei: US will disintegrate within 25 years-Amid al-Quds Day commemorations calling for the destruction of Israel, official says United States also under threat-By Times of Israel staff July 3, 2016, 4:45 am

A senior military aide to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei predicted that the United States would “disintegrate” within the next quarter-century.“The US has reached a point today that it will witness fragmentation and disintegration 25 years later,” General Nasser Arasteh was quoted as saying Friday night by the semi-official Fars news agency. The remark recalled comments by Khamenei himself, who predicted last year that Israel would not survive the next 25 years.“You will not see next 25 years,” a tweet by Khamenei’s official Twitter account said in September, adding that the Jewish state would be hounded until it was destroyed. On Friday, a resolution issued in Iran to mark the anti-Israel al-Quds Day openly called for the elimination of “the cancerous tumor of Israel,” and declared that “noble cause” as the top priority for the Muslim world. The text of the resolution was published by Fars, which said it was adopted by the vast numbers of Iranians who took to the streets across the country to demonstrate against Israel and its allies, including the United States.“We Iranians as a united and integrated nation see liberation of the Holy Quds (Jerusalem), rescuing the oppressed and defenseless Palestinian nation from the dominance of the fake Zionist regime, and efforts aimed at eliminating the cancerous tumor of Israel as the noble cause of the Islamic Revolution,” Fars quoted the resolution as saying. This goal is the “first priority of the Muslim World and the only way to confront the illegitimate and criminal Zionist regime,” the text continued. The resolution also urged Muslims worldwide not to allow “the enemies of Islam” to distract their attention from the issue of the Holy Quds and Palestine, Fars said. The text was published as Iranians staged anti-Israel rallies across the country for the annual al-Quds Day events, a tradition established by the late ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on the last Friday of Ramadan. Some protesters trampled the Israeli flag, and also chanted “down with the USA.”President Hassan Rouhani, attending the Tehran rally, said regional conflicts were making it increasingly difficult to address the Palestinian issue. “Today, due to the divisions in the Islamic world, the presence of takfiris (Sunni extremists) and terrorists in the region… we are far away from the ideal of liberating Palestine,” he told state TV, calling for greater unity between Muslims.“The Zionist regime (Israel) is a regional base for America and the global arrogance (the US and its allies),” he added. “Disunity and discord among Muslim and terrorist groups in the region … have diverted us from the important issue of Palestine,” Rouhani said. “Unity is the only way to restore stability in the region,” Rouhani further said. “We stand with the dispossessed Palestinian nation.”Iran, which does not recognize Israel and calls for its destruction, has marked al-Quds Day since the start of its 1979 Islamic revolution. Al-Quds is the historic Arabic name for Jerusalem, and Iran says the day is an occasion to express support for the Palestinians and emphasize the importance of Jerusalem for Muslims.Agencies contributed to this report.

PM approves new homes in Kiryat Arba in response to attacks-Netanyahu, Liberman okay construction plans for 42 units; security cabinet to convene later Saturday after series of terror attacks, rocket fire-By Times of Israel staff July 2, 2016, 7:16 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman approved on Saturday the publication of a tender to build 42 additional homes in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba.According to Channel 10, the tender was in the works six months ago but was essentially frozen by the government until Friday’s decision, announced a day later. The announcement came two days after 13-year-old Hallel Yaffa Ariel was stabbed to death by a Palestinian terrorist in her bedroom on Thursday morning in the settlement, close to the Palestinian town of Hebron. A civilian security guard who responded to the brutal attack was seriously injured by the Palestinian assailant, Muhammad Nasser Tarayrah, 17, from Bani Naim. Tarayrah was shot and killed by other guards. The new homes were a part of a series of measures announced by the Israeli government in response to the terror attack in Kiryat Arba, including a closure on Bani Naim and cancellation of work permits of the attacker’s relatives.Another terror attack on Friday near Hebron killed a rabbi, Miki Mark, and seriously injured his wife while they were driving on Route 60. Two of their children were also wounded in the shooting attack. In response, the IDF stepped up its troop presence in the West Bank, sending two battalions to help secure settlements and the main roads used by Israelis. A closure on Hebron was also imposed. On Friday, Gaza rocket fire hit a vacant pre-school in Sderot in southern Israel. The structure sustained damage and a number of people were treated for shock.Netanyahu was to convene his security cabinet Saturday night to discuss a response to the escalation since Thursday.Politicians and public figures have demanded a tough response to the deadly violence, including the expulsion of terrorists’ families to Gaza or Syria, as suggested by Likud minister Yisrael Katz.Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who leads the Orthodox-nationalist Jewish Home party, said he would present a far-reaching plan to halt the wave of terror attacks on Saturday.Suggestions included in his plan, he said, were the imprisonment or expulsion of terrorists’ families; the arrest of all Hamas operatives in the West Bank; the destruction of thousands of illegally built homes in the West Bank; the complete closure of the villages of assailants; resumption of full military activity in West Bank areas that are under the control of the Palestinian Authority; preventing Palestinian vehicles from traveling on Route 60 — the West Bank’s main north-to-south road; and disabling the Internet in the entire Hebron region.Saturday’s construction announcement comes after a Quartet report Thursday demanded that Israel take urgent steps to halt the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, citing it as one of three “negative trends” that must be quickly reversed to keep the hope of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal alive.

Israeli minister says Facebook a 'monster', hindering security-[Reuters]-July 2, 2016-YAHOONEWS

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's Minister of Internal Security on Saturday accused Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, of not doing enough to prevent incitement against Israel and said the social network was "sabotaging" Israeli police work.Israel has in the past said Facebook is used to encourage attacks and the government is drafting legislation to enable it to order Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other social media to remove online postings it deems incite terrorism. [L8N19C1NE]-But the comments made by Gilad Erdan, a cabinet minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing coalition that oversees law enforcement, were particularly biting. He said Zuckerberg was responsible for Facebook policy and called on "the citizens of Israel to flood him in every possible place with the demand to monitor the platform he established and from which he earns billions".A spokesman for Facebook in Israel said the company was not commenting on the minister's assertions.During an interview on Channel 2 television, Erdan said, "Facebook today, which brought an amazing, positive revolution to the world, sadly, we see this since the rise of Daesh (Islamic State) and the wave of terror, it has simply become a monster.""Facebook today sabotages, it should be known, sabotages the work of the Israeli police, because when the Israeli police approach them, and it is regarding a resident of Judea and Samaria, Facebook does not cooperate," he said, referring to the area of the West Bank."It also sets a very high bar for removing inciteful content and posts," Erdan said.Since October, Palestinians have killed 34 Israelis and two visiting U.S. citizens in a wave of street attacks, mostly stabbings. Israeli forces have shot dead at least 201 Palestinians, 137 of whom Israel has said were assailants. Others were killed in clashes and protests.Palestinian leaders say assailants have acted out of desperation over the collapse of peace talks in 2014 and Israeli settlement expansion in occupied territory that Palestinians seek for an independent state. Most countries view the settlements as illegal. Israel disputes this.Israel says incitement in the Palestinian media and personal problems at home have been important factors that have spurred assailants, often teenagers, to launch attacks.Tensions over Jewish access to a contested Jerusalem holy site, revered by Muslims as Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) and Jews as Temple Mount, have also fueled the violence.(Reporting by Ari Rabinovitch; editing by David Clarke)

Businesses joining first Palestinian-Israeli mall face boycott-Palestinian Society for Consumer Protection threatens to blacklist any store that rents space in West Bank complex meant to foster coexistence-By Dov Lieber July 3, 2016, 3:19 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The leader of an influential Palestinian organization threatened on Saturday to cause financial harm to any Palestinian businesses joining the first Israeli-Palestinian mall currently under construction in the northeastern Jerusalem. The Times of Israel reported last week that Israeli developer Rami Levy is building a shopping center a two-minute drive from the West Bank crossing that leads to Ramallah. Levy said he is seeking out Palestinian business owners to rent space in the shopping center, and hopes to attract customers from the big West Bank city.Responding to the report of Levy’s project, Saleh Haniyeh, head of the Palestinian Society for Consumer Protection, said his group, in partnership with a number of institutions, is “ready to reveal the names of any partners of ‘the settler’ businessman Rami Levy, put them on the blacklist and boycott their commercial interests.”Haniyeh said his group would also pressure the Palestinian Chamber of Commerce to freeze Levy’s Palestinian partners’ memberships, according to a report in the Palestinian news agency Ma’an.The head of the Palestinian organization reiterated his group’s complete boycott of any goods and services stemming from Israeli settlements. When reached by The Times of Israel, Levy declined to comment on the boycott effort.Levy earlier said the idea for the mall he is building in the industrial zone of Atarot, beyond the Green Line north of Jerusalem, came from his existing shopping centers and supermarkets in the West Bank, which have become unexpected points of friendly interaction between Jews and Arabs looking for jobs and the cheapest prices. If his mall succeeds, Levy said, “it can lead to an understanding that we can do everything together.”Levy’s project has already faced challenges due to political pressure. At one point, Levy had reeled one of the biggest Palestinian wholesalers of electronics, but after the deal was made, the potential client got cold feet over political fears. The Israeli businessman, who became famous for wild sales that included selling milk cheaper than water and a kilo of chicken for 10 cents, was confident prices in his mall would be lower than those in Ramallah.Responding to this, Haniyeh said, “We will not sell our positions and principles for a number of shekels.”But many Palestinians interviewed by The Times of Israel at the Ramallah-Jewish Qalandiya crossing said they would have no problem taking advantage of Levy’s cheaper prices in the new mall. Only a few expressed opposition to shopping there for political reasons.

New Security Council slightly better for Israel, but no game-changer-Jerusalem’s situation in key UN body remains volatile with the entry of Sweden, the first EU state to recognize ‘Palestine,’ though Kazakhstan provides diplomatic toehold-By Raphael Ahren July 2, 2016, 4:16 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A shake-up this week at the United Nations Security Council promises a slightly improved situation for Jerusalem, even though arch-critic Sweden is among the new members, but the fresh constellation is unlikely to change the balance of power on issues related to the peace process with the Palestinians.Five new members were elected to the key decision-making body: Bolivia, Ethiopia, Sweden and Kazakhstan — and Italy and the Netherlands, which received the same number of votes and decided to split the two-year term (Italy will take 2017; the Netherlands 2018).Overall, the new Security Council mix, which takes effect on January 1, 2017, is unlikely to drastically improve or worsen the Palestinians’ chances to advance one-sided resolutions against Israel.Israeli diplomats are sure to be dismayed about Sweden, the first Western European country to formally recognize a Palestinian state, garnering a spot on the body — one of the few in the UN universe whose decisions are actually binding.Relations with Stockholm, which takes over Spain’s spot on the council, have also been particularly sour because of controversial comments by Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström. To Israeli outrage, she has called for investigations into Israelis ostensibly illegally executing Palestinian assailants during the recent wave of terror.“This is definitely wrong and it singles out Israel in an absurd way,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this year, referring to Wallström’s comments. “I haven’t examined the motives of this or that minister. I just tell you, it’s outrageous, it’s immoral and it’s stupid.”Ramallah, on the other hand, is pleased with Sweden’s election. One Palestine Liberation Organization official suggested on Twitter that Stockholm’s foreign policy — including the recognition of Palestinian statehood — “works better” than critics have claimed.Seems that Swedish foreign policy, including #Palestine's recognition, works better than what their far-right says. https://t.co/6Gr1DThpHT— Xavier Abu Eid (@xabueid) June 29, 2016-Sweden’s campaign for a Security Council seat focused on issues of “peace” and stability, but in an article Wallström wrote after winning the vote, she did not spell out any particular initiatives regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.“Our Middle East policy promotes a peace process that will lead to a two-state solution and an end to Daesh’s ruthless savagery,” she wrote, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State terror group.Offsetting Sweden’s arrival for Jerusalem are Italy and the Netherlands, considered good friends of Israel. The two EU member states are replacing New Zealand, which openly toyed with the notion of launching its own initiative to relaunch the peace process, an idea Jerusalem ardently opposed. The election of Ethiopia, which replaces Angola, is also good news for Jerusalem. Israel has warm ties with the eastern African nation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Addis Ababa next week is expected to further strengthen that relationship.Kazakhstan replaces Malaysia, and while Astana can be expected to follow Moscow’s lead in Security Council votes and support all Palestinian initiatives, at least Jerusalem has good diplomatic relations with Kazakhstan, including a full-time ambassador in Astana. Netanyahu is rumored to be planning a visit to the Central Asian country later this year, though his office has not confirmed such plans. (Israel has an economic relationship but no formal diplomatic ties with Kuala Lumpur.) Bolivia is replacing Venezuela, which means that one country that has no diplomatic relations with Israel is replacing another. But while Bolivian leader Evo Morales has called Israel a “terrorist state” committing a “genocide” on the Palestinians, Bolivia’s term on the Security Council is unlikely to be more challenging for Israel than that of Venezuela, which used its position to launch repeated aggressive attacks against the Jewish state. All told, Israel’s position at the Security Council is likely to remain extremely volatile in 2017.A renewed Palestinian effort to pass a resolution calling for an Israeli withdrawal from beyond the pre-1967 lines would require nine votes from the council’s 15 members. If that were to occur, one of its five permanent members — the US, the UK, China, France and Russia — could veto the resolution.China, Russia, Egypt, Senegal, Bolivia, France, Sweden and Kazakhstan are certain to support any Palestinian text. How the remaining members of the council — Britain, Ethiopia, Italy, Japan, Ukraine and Uruguay — would vote would depend on the resolution’s wording and on the effectiveness of Israeli diplomacy in New York and with the relevant capitals. The United States, which has traditionally rejected Security Council resolutions targeting Israel, remains the key player in any possible diplomatic showdown at Turtle Bay.While administration officials vow to continue opposing unfair treatment of the Jewish state at the UN, Jerusalem worries that US President Barack Obama might used the period between the US elections in November and Inauguration Day in January to leave his mark on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, possibly by supporting a resolution at the Security Council.Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said on Israel Radio this week his American colleagues continue to assure him of their longstanding position against efforts to internationalize the conflict, “but it’s my business to worry,” he said.
