Finding an ant in your home is usually nothing more than a mild annoyance, but this summer Montrealers may find their view of the pest changing for the worst.That's because ants are more common in many Montreal homes this year after a short winter allowed more of them than usual to survive.Sean Rollo from ORKIN Canada told CBC Montreal's Daybreak that the pest control company is already receiving a lot of calls about ants and are predicting a rough year ahead for invasions.Although ants in general may see a population boom this year, it's carpenter ants that are the biggest danger to homes, Rollo said.Carpenters are easily spotted because they are bigger than other ants. But catching them is tricky.Rollo said people usually don't find them until the wood in their home is already compromised by the bugs burrowing their way through it."Typically they appear if there is water damage in the house. The ants are usually a secondary concern," Rollo said. "In a way ants are an alarm system that indicates there's a problem with your house."-Ant proofing?-Carpenter ants are most attracted to wood that is soft because of water damage or in bathrooms where a lack of proper ventilation can cause wood to rot.The home invading pests can be hard to get rid of because even if they are eliminated from one part of the house, that site may only be a satellite nest. Finding the main nest can be extremely difficult.Adding strategic sealant and fixing water damage can help keep the carpenter ants away, Rollo said. He also suggested trimming any vines, which he says act as an ant highway."Ant-proof is a strong word [but] you can definitely make your home unattractive to ants," he said.

ISTANBUL - Turkey's foreign minister suggested his country could carry out joint military operations with the United States to oust the Islamic State group from Syria.Speaking in Antalya late Sunday, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that operation could "easily advance to Raqqa," the main IS bastion in Syria.American special operations forces and a coalition known as the Syria Democratic Forces have begun clearing areas north of Raqqa in preparation for an eventual assault on the city. A major player in the coalition is the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, which Turkey — unlike the United States — views as a terrorist organization.Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against IS and a Turkish air base is being used to launch bombing runs against IS.But the involvement of Kurdish factions in the anti-IS effort has strained U.S.-Turkish relations. According to Vatan newspaper's Monday edition, Cavusoglu criticized the U.S. for dealing with the political wing of the YPG and said it would be better off uniting forces with Turkey."Unfortunately the U.S. is entering a phase that is very dangerous for the future of Syria," said Cavusoglu. "We have warned them."The United States, Cavusoglu added, was not fulfilling its promises and had fallen behind on the delivery of HIMARS missiles which were due to arrive this month.HIMARS stands for High Mobility Artillery Rocket System. CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tropical Depression Bonnie and its heavy rains dissipated over South Carolina on Monday, as a wet Memorial Day holiday weekend comes to an end in the area.The depression fell apart early in the day about 45 miles north of Charleston, according to the National Hurricane Center.The storm was expected to continue as an area of low pressure, moving northeast into North Carolina and sporadically spreading heavy rain, especially during the daylight hours, forecasters said.The main concern throughout the holiday weekend has been heavy rains and strong surf more than wind.Bonne dropped about 8 inches of rain in southern South Carolina on Sunday, closing the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 about 20 miles north of the Georgia state line for about 16 hours. The highway finally reopened around 1 a.m. Monday, and troopers reported the 10-mile backups caused by the detour had been cleared.The only possible death attributed to the storm is a missing swimmer off of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, just south of Wilmington.Rescuers plan to continue searching Monday for 21-year-old James Cameron of Graham, North Carolina. He disappeared while swimming with two friends Saturday evening in the rough surf. The friends made it back to shore safely, authorities said.Lifeguards in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina were warning people of dangerous rip currents, which can suddenly pull swimmers out to deep waters. Officials in Myrtle Beach put up the no swimming flags again Monday because conditions were just too rough.Bonnie formed Saturday, becoming the second tropical storm in the Atlantic to form before the official start of the hurricane season on Wednesday. Hurricane Alex struck the Azores in the far eastern Atlantic in January.

HOUSTON - Authorities in central Texas have found two more bodies along flooded streams, bringing the death toll from flooding in the state to six.It was unclear Sunday whether a body found in Travis County near Austin was one of the two people who had been missing in Texas. An 11-year-old boy was still missing in central Kansas, too.The latest flooding victim identified by authorities was a woman who died when the car she was riding in was swept from the street by the flooded Cypress Creek about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Kendall County sheriff's Cpl. Reid Daly said.The car, with three occupants, was in Comfort, about 45 miles north of San Antonio. The driver made it to shore, and a female passenger was rescued from a tree. But Daly said 23-year-old Florida Molima was missing until her body was found around 11 a.m. Sunday about 8 miles downstream. She became the sixth flood-related death in Texas over Memorial Day weekend.In Bandera, about 45 miles northwest of San Antonio, an estimated 10 inches of rain overnight led to the rescues of nine people. The rain caused widespread damage, including the collapse of the roof of the Bandera Bulletin, the weekly newspaper, KSAT-TV in San Antonio reported. Photos from the area showed campers and trailers stacked against each other, but no injuries were reported.Torrential rains caused heavy flash flooding in some parts of the U.S. over the last few days, and led to numerous evacuations in southeast Texas, including two prisons. But the threat of severe weather decreased in many places as the weekend wore on, though Tropical Depression Bonnie continued to bring rain and wind to North and South Carolina.Near Austin, a crew aboard a county STAR Flight helicopter found a body Sunday on the north end of a retention pond near the Circuit of the Americas auto racing track, which is close to where two people were reported to have been washed away by a flash flood early Friday, Travis County sheriff's spokesman Lisa Block said. TORONTO - Premier Kathleen Wynne has apologized on behalf of the Ontario government to First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities for the "brutalities" suffered at residential schools.The formal apology was part of the province's reaction to the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which found that children were physically and sexually abused and died in numbers that would not have been tolerated in any school system.Wynne said Ontario wants to acknowledge "one of the most shameful chapters in Canadian history" and said the province will teach a new generation of students the truth about our shared history.She said residential schools set out to "take the Indian out of the child" by removing them from their homes and systematically stripping them of their languages, cultures laws and rights.Ontario will spend $250 million over three years to help understand the legacy of residential schools and to create what Wynne calls a culturally relevant and responsible justice system.The Truth and Reconciliation commission issued 94 recommendations such as reducing the number of aboriginal children in foster care and granting police greater independence to investigate crimes where government may be an interested party.Even as the premier was offering the formal apology in the legislature, leaders from the Grassy Narrows First Nation were in the Queen's Park media studio asking again for help dealing with mercury poisoning that has devastated their community.

OTTAWA - The Liberal government's new child benefit could clog courts with divorced couples fighting over how much one spouse must pay in child support when the potentially lucrative payments start landing in just over one month, says Opposition finance critic Lisa Raitt.The Liberals' new $23-billion-a-year benefit will replace three different programs on July 1 with one income-tested payment to families each month.Unlike with the benefits being replaced — the universal child care benefit and the Canada child tax benefit —the government's budget and associated legislation doesn't give guidance about how divorced parents can split tax deductions, or calculations of spousal support payments.Raitt said the problem could affect some 1.2 million Canadians."Obviously they're going to have a point of view on whether or not they should be paying more or less child support and instead of clogging up the courts, this government owes (it to) them to give them some direction," Raitt said in a telephone interview."It's going to affect anybody's separation agreements, it's going to affect anyone's child support orders and there's silence on it (from the government). I don't think they've figured it out yet."The new child benefit will replace the monthly universal child care benefit with an income-tested payment that will start at $6,400 a year for a child five and under, and $5,400 a year for children six to 17. Only those families earning less than $30,000 a year will receive the full amount; the government will reduce payments as incomes rise.The government has been negotiating agreements with provinces to ensure the new benefit wouldn't adversely affect those receiving provincial social assistance. Those subsidies are income tested, meaning the more a family earns, the less they receive in subsidies.The government says the new benefit should lift 300,000 children out of poverty in its first year, and provide more money to nine out of 10 families.Critics still have questions about whether the new child benefit will have the same dampening effect on maternal employment rates that the universal child care benefit had as women opt to stay home so as not to earn too much money and lose out on their benefit or on their taxes."Officials have said there hasn't been a lot of analysis done on certain measures that the government has implemented," Raitt said."Every time you make one change there is ripple effects across either the economy or the social cohesion in the country and we just want to know how much work the Liberals did around it."The issue is expected to be a central fixture of questioning Monday when opposition MPs get three different chances to grill Finance Minister Bill Morneau about his first budget, and government spending documents. Finding an ant in your home is usually nothing more than a mild annoyance, but this summer Montrealers may find their view of the pest changing for the worst.That's because ants are more common in many Montreal homes this year after a short winter allowed more of them than usual to survive.Sean Rollo from ORKIN Canada told CBC Montreal's Daybreak that the pest control company is already receiving a lot of calls about ants and are predicting a rough year ahead for invasions.Although ants in general may see a population boom this year, it's carpenter ants that are the biggest danger to homes, Rollo said.Carpenters are easily spotted because they are bigger than other ants. But catching them is tricky.Rollo said people usually don't find them until the wood in their home is already compromised by the bugs burrowing their way through it."Typically they appear if there is water damage in the house. The ants are usually a secondary concern," Rollo said. "In a way ants are an alarm system that indicates there's a problem with your house."-Ant proofing?-Carpenter ants are most attracted to wood that is soft because of water damage or in bathrooms where a lack of proper ventilation can cause wood to rot.The home invading pests can be hard to get rid of because even if they are eliminated from one part of the house, that site may only be a satellite nest. A major player in the coalition is the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, which Turkey — unlike the United States — views as a terrorist organization.Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against IS and a Turkish air base is being used to launch bombing runs against IS.But the involvement of Kurdish factions in the anti-IS effort has strained U.S.-Turkish relations. According to Vatan newspaper's Monday edition, Cavusoglu criticized the U.S. for dealing with the political wing of the YPG and said it would be better off uniting forces with Turkey."Unfortunately the U.S. is entering a phase that is very dangerous for the future of Syria," said Cavusoglu. CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tropical Depression Bonnie and its heavy rains dissipated over South Carolina on Monday, as a wet Memorial Day holiday weekend comes to an end in the area.The depression fell apart early in the day about 45 miles north of Charleston, according to the National Hurricane Center.The storm was expected to continue as an area of low pressure, moving northeast into North Carolina and sporadically spreading heavy rain, especially during the daylight hours, forecasters said.The main concern throughout the holiday weekend has been heavy rains and strong surf more than wind.Bonne dropped about 8 inches of rain in southern South Carolina on Sunday, closing the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 about 20 miles north of the Georgia state line for about 16 hours. The highway finally reopened around 1 a.m. Monday, and troopers reported the 10-mile backups caused by the detour had been cleared.The only possible death attributed to the storm is a missing swimmer off of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, just south of Wilmington.Rescuers plan to continue searching Monday for 21-year-old James Cameron of Graham, North Carolina. He disappeared while swimming with two friends Saturday evening in the rough surf. The friends made it back to shore safely, authorities said.Lifeguards in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina were warning people of dangerous rip currents, which can suddenly pull swimmers out to deep waters. Officials in Myrtle Beach put up the no swimming flags again Monday because conditions were just too rough.Bonnie formed Saturday, becoming the second tropical storm in the Atlantic to form before the official start of the hurricane season on Wednesday. Hurricane Alex struck the Azores in the far eastern Atlantic in January.

An 11-year-old boy was still missing in central Kansas, too.The latest flooding victim identified by authorities was a woman who died when the car she was riding in was swept from the street by the flooded Cypress Creek about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Kendall County sheriff's Cpl. Reid Daly said.The car, with three occupants, was in Comfort, about 45 miles north of San Antonio. The driver made it to shore, and a female passenger was rescued from a tree. But Daly said 23-year-old Florida Molima was missing until her body was found around 11 a.m. Sunday about 8 miles downstream. She became the sixth flood-related death in Texas over Memorial Day weekend.In Bandera, about 45 miles northwest of San Antonio, an estimated 10 inches of rain overnight led to the rescues of nine people. Photos from the area showed campers and trailers stacked against each other, but no injuries were reported.Torrential rains caused heavy flash flooding in some parts of the U.S. over the last few days, and led to numerous evacuations in southeast Texas, including two prisons. OTTAWA - The Liberal government's new child benefit could clog courts with divorced couples fighting over how much one spouse must pay in child support when the potentially lucrative payments start landing in just over one month, says Opposition finance critic Lisa Raitt.The Liberals' new $23-billion-a-year benefit will replace three different programs on July 1 with one income-tested payment to families each month.Unlike with the benefits being replaced — the universal child care benefit and the Canada child tax benefit —the government's budget and associated legislation doesn't give guidance about how divorced parents can split tax deductions, or calculations of spousal support payments.Raitt said the problem could affect some 1.2 million Canadians."Obviously they're going to have a point of view on whether or not they should be paying more or less child support and instead of clogging up the courts, this government owes (it to) them to give them some direction," Raitt said in a telephone interview."It's going to affect anybody's separation agreements, it's going to affect anyone's child support orders and there's silence on it (from the government). I don't think they've figured it out yet."The new child benefit will replace the monthly universal child care benefit with an income-tested payment that will start at $6,400 a year for a child five and under, and $5,400 a year for children six to 17. Only those families earning less than $30,000 a year will receive the full amount; the government will reduce payments as incomes rise.The government has been negotiating agreements with provinces to ensure the new benefit wouldn't adversely affect those receiving provincial social assistance. Those subsidies are income tested, meaning the more a family earns, the less they receive in subsidies.The government says the new benefit should lift 300,000 children out of poverty in its first year, and provide more money to nine out of 10 families.Critics still have questions about whether the new child benefit will have the same dampening effect on maternal employment rates that the universal child care benefit had as women opt to stay home so as not to earn too much money and lose out on their benefit or on their taxes."Officials have said there hasn't been a lot of analysis done on certain measures that the government has implemented," Raitt said."Every time you make one change there is ripple effects across either the economy or the social cohesion in the country and we just want to know how much work the Liberals did around it."The issue is expected to be a central fixture of questioning Monday when opposition MPs get three different chances to grill Finance Minister Bill Morneau about his first budget, and government spending documents. First he will face the daily question period, then go to the Commons' finance committee, and finally face the House of Commons as a whole in the evening for a detailed grilling in committee-of-the-whole.The focus is a departure from the months-long war of words over whether the Tories left the Liberals with a surplus and how the government intends to balance the budget at some point in the future.The Finance Department said last week that preliminary estimates show a deficit of $2 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, not including year-end adjustments and a $3.7-billion commitment to benefits for veterans. The Liberals argue the numbers support their view that the Tories left the books in the red; the Tories say the Liberals squandered the surplus left behind.

Donald Trump says people living in the United States illegally are being treated better than the nation’s military veterans.“In many cases, illegal immigrants are taken much better care of by this country than our veterans,” Trump said at the annual Rolling Thunder rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where hundreds of thousands of bikers gathered to honor prisoners of war and service members missing in action. “We’re not going to allow that to happen any longer.”“We’re gonna rebuild our military,” he continued. “And we’re gonna take care of our veterans. Our veterans have been treated so badly in this country.”Trump — whose repeated assertions that his televised January fundraiser for veterans took in $6 million have been called into question in recent days — announced his campaign would be holding a press conference on Tuesday to disclose where, specifically, the donations went.Before the event, political observers wondered how the crowd would react to Trump in light of his controversial comments about Arizona Sen. John McCain, a former POW who Trump suggested is only considered a war hero because he was caught. But the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was, for the most part, warmly received.“Do we love the bikers? Yes!” Trump said. “Some of these people are tough. And some of these guys, they’re rough. And I get out and I shake their hands, and I’ll tell you, there is love. There is love, and it’s an incredible feeling. And they won’t mention the kinds of massive crowds we have here today.”
