Update: 4:02PM MIGHTY Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston is now the strongest tropical cyclone and first Category 5 storm on record to hit Fiji.Fiji's strongest cyclone to have been recorded was Category 4 Tropical Cyclone Evan of December 17, 2012 which walloped Fiji with sustained winds of 135 mph.In a weather bulletin issued earlier this afternoon, FMS said TC Winston is moving west at about 25km per hour.A hurricane warning remains in force for Vanuabalavu, Yacata, Mago, Cicia, Tuvuca, Nayau, Koro, Gau, Vanuavatu, Taveuni, Qamea, Laucala, Ovalau, Wakaya and Vanua Levu.A storm warning is in place for Lakeba, Oneata, Moce, Komo, Namuka, Ogea, Moala, Viti Levu, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group.A gale and heavy rain warning has also been issued for the rest of Fiji.Islands in the Eastern Division can expect very destructive hurricane force winds with average speed of 220km per hour and momentary gusts to 315km per hour.Heavy rain can result in flooding, including sea flooding of low-lying areas.AT A GLANCE-Source: Dr Jeff Masters-Fiji's Strongest Cyclone-Category 4 Tropical Cyclone Evan of December 17, 2012 walloped Fiji with sustained winds of 135 mph, as the storm's southern eyewall--the most intense part of the storm--brought hurricane conditions to a long stretch of the north and west coasts of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. According to a database maintained by NOAA's Coastal Service Center, Evan was the strongest tropical cyclone on record to affect Fiji's main island, with records going back to 1941 (however, accurate satellite records extend back to only about 1990.) Evan did $109 million in damage (2012 dollars) to Fiji, making it the second most destructive storm in their history. The most devastating cyclone to affect Fiji in recent decades was Category 2 Cyclone Kina of January 1993, which killed 23 people and did $100 million in damage (1993 dollars.) The only deadlier storm than Kina was Category 3 Cyclone Eric of 1985, which made a direct hit on the capital of Suva, killing 25.
N. Korea fires artillery rounds near border with South-AFP-feb 20,16-yahoonews
Seoul (AFP) - North Korea fired a few artillery rounds during an apparent military drill near a frontline island on Saturday, a military spokesman from the South said, as tensions run high following nuclear and missile tests by Pyongyang. The incident also comes days after the South said it would conduct its largest-ever annual joint military exercises with the United States next month, which usually causes a spike in cross-border friction."The North Korean army fired a few artillery rounds" at around 07:20 am (2220 GMT Friday) from an artillery battery at Jangsangot promontory on its southern coast near the disputed sea border between the two Koreas, a defence ministry statement said."North Korea is believed to have conducted a military drill" north of the sea border, it said.As a precautionary measure, however, the South urged residents on Baengnyeongdo island to prepare to go into shelters and fishing vessels at sea to return to nearby ports, it said.Currently, the North Korean army shows no signs of engaging in any further provocative activities, it added. In 2010, the North shelled Yeonpyeong island near Baengnyeongdo, killing four people, in response to a live-fire drill conducted by the South near the disputed sea border.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Sounds of explosions caused South Korean residents of a front-line island to prepare to evacuate early Saturday, but it was later determined that the noise came from a North Korean artillery drill across the rivals' disputed maritime border, officials said. The false alarm was indicative of the high anxiety between the Koreas in the wake of the North's recent long-range rocket launch and nuclear test.Hours later, North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency hurled insults at South Korean President Park Geun-hye, calling her a "tailless, old, insane bitch" as it condemned her hard-line response to the North's recent actions. The government of Park, who has been a frequent target of sexist comments from the North, shut down a factory park in North Korea that had been jointly run by the rivals. Seoul also has started preparatory talks with Washington on deploying a sophisticated missile defense system in South Korea in attempts to tighten the screws on Pyongyang.North Korea also labeled as "laughable" Washington's new sanctions against Pyongyang, which were signed into law by President Barack Obama on Thursday and are aimed at denying the North the money to develop miniaturized warheads and the long-range missiles required to deliver them.Despite the U.S. sanctions, the North will continue to "raise high" its official policy of simultaneously developing nuclear weapons and its economy, an unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a separate KCNA dispatch.South Korea's front-line soldiers near the northwest island of Baengnyeong heard several explosions and also saw flashes from what the military believes were shells fired from North Korean coastal guns at around 7:20 a.m., said an official from Seoul's Defense Ministry, who didn't want to be named, citing office rules. No North Korean projectile flew south of the maritime border, he said.An official from the county that governs the island said that residents didn't evacuate, but that fishing boats returned to their ports. She said that passenger vessels from the island and the mainland port of Incheon were operating normally.Meanwhile, Seoul's Defense Ministry said the military completed its search operations for debris from the North Korean long-range rocket that was launched into orbit Feb. 7.The military said it was unlikely that there were any more crucial parts left to be found in South Korean seas. The ministry said that the navy recovered two pieces of debris presumed to be from the launch at an island off the country's western coast on Thursday and Friday.South Korean officials believe the North deliberately blew up the rocket's first stage after burnout to prevent South Korea from retrieving debris.North Korea said it launched an Earth observation satellite, but South Korea, the U.S. and the U.N. said it violated a ban on Pyongyang's missile technology.
