The Lebanese should be losing sleep over the dramatic developments in the last 48 hours in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with regard to Lebanon. The decision by Riyadh and Abu Dhabi to bar their citizens from visiting Lebanon is expected to cause considerable economic damage to Beirut. If you add to that the Saudi decision to halt its $4 billion annual aid to the Lebanese government and the Lebanese army, this makes for a devastating economic blow imposed by Riyadh on Beirut.Unfortunately for the people of Lebanon, there’s not a great deal they can do about what looks like another battle in the wider Middle East war that Saudi Arabia and its Sunni allies are waging against Iran and the rest of the “Shiite axis.”The bottom line seems to be that Saudi Arabia — one of the most important allies of the former Lebanon, the moderate, modern, advanced Lebanon that for decades was controlled by a Christian Maronite-Sunni alliance — has decided to pull away, to wash its hands.It is giving up on its allies and leaving Lebanon in the control of Iran, Hezbollah and the new alliance that has taken shape there between various Christian Maronites (Michel Aoun and his men) and the Shiites, who today constitute the country’s largest community.In many respects, the Saudi decision represents a recognition of defeat: Lebanon is now controlled by Iran and Hezbollah, and therefore every dollar transferred there as military or government aid simply strengthens Hezbollah at the expense of the remaining moderate Sunnis and anti-Syrian Christians.Underlining the point, Iran has moved quickly to fill the vacuum left by Riyadh. A Foreign Ministry spokesman in Tehran announced Tuesday that Iran is ready to discuss providing military help to the Lebanese Army “if an official request for such assistance is made.”It’s unlikely that the Saudis and the UAE will be the only Sunni states to reach the conclusion that Lebanon is lost. Riyadh tends to takes steps like this only when it has the full backing of the other Gulf states.Why have the Saudis acted now rather than earlier? Apparently they’ve finally concluded that Lebanon’s political circus is beyond repair and that any further effort to preserve Lebanon’s old political framework, and to pretend that the democratic show goes on, only serves Hezbollah and the Shiites. More than this, from the Saudi perspective Lebanon is inseparable from the war with Iran unfolding in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and beyond. Preserving the appearance of a functioning government in Lebanon does nothing to help the Sunni axis; it merely strengthens Hezbollah’s position as the group that runs Lebanon.Where is all this heading? Certainly to a deepening of interreligious tensions inside Lebanon. The armed confrontation there between Sunnis and Shiites, which has played out in wars between terror organizations until now, is likely to escalate sooner rather than later.It may also see the Saudis take the major gamble of entering the Syrian conflict.Washington and Moscow may be seeking support everywhere in the Middle East for their call for a ceasefire in Syria from Saturday, February 27, almost five years after the start of the civil war. But both Russia and the US know full well that this will be a very limited ceasefire at best (Islamic State and the Al-Nusra Front are not part of it). At worst, it will collapse in the deafening crash of still deeper conflict.

An ultra-Orthodox MK reportedly compared the Reform movement to a mentally ill person.Yisrael Eichler of the United Torah Judaism party made his remarks Tuesday in the lead-up to a Knesset debate the next day on the Supreme Court’s decision that non-Orthodox converts can immerse in a public mikvah, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.“Not every mentally ill person can come to the operating room and decide the rules of medicine and force the hospital to have an operation by whatever way works,” Eichler was quoted as saying. “The High Court can’t force a hospital to allow the court’s surgeons and the court’s medicines into the operating room. And so it is intolerable that the directors of ritual baths will have to allow organizers of Reform religion-changing ceremonies into a Jewish ritual bath.”Eichler also reportedly said the Supreme Court has “no authority to enforce Jewish law, whose source of authority is the Torah, which the High Court does not recognize as a source of its legal authority.”He also said: “The High Court decision to force the members of the Jewish religion to carry out ritual bath rules and conversions according to the Reform religion, which does not believe in the purity of the ritual bath … is a serious infraction of freedom of religion for the members of the Jewish religion, which has clear laws. Religious freedom is promised in the Declaration of Independence to the members of all religions in the State of Israel, including the believers in the Jewish religion.”Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that mikvahs in Israel must open to non-Orthodox conversion rites. Previously, Israeli mikvahs have denied access for conversion immersions to Reform and Conservative converts. The Gaza Strip’s worsening humanitarian situation could lead to a conflagration with Israel, the Israeli military’s intelligence chief warned Tuesday.IDF Military Intelligence chief Herzl Halevi told the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee: “The humanitarian condition in Gaza is progressively deteriorating, and if it blows up, it’ll be in Israel’s direction.”Halevi said the reconstruction of Gaza following 2014’s war between Hamas and Israel was moving very slowly. The Strip’s rehabilitation, he said, was a key factor in preventing further conflict.He agreed with a 2015 UN report that said Gaza could be uninhabitable by 2020 if its economy is not quickly strengthened. He expressed doubt in Palestinian threats to dismantle the PA in light of stalled peace talks with Israel. The Lebanese should be losing sleep over the dramatic developments in the last 48 hours in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with regard to Lebanon. The decision by Riyadh and Abu Dhabi to bar their citizens from visiting Lebanon is expected to cause considerable economic damage to Beirut. If you add to that the Saudi decision to halt its $4 billion annual aid to the Lebanese government and the Lebanese army, this makes for a devastating economic blow imposed by Riyadh on Beirut.Unfortunately for the people of Lebanon, there’s not a great deal they can do about what looks like another battle in the wider Middle East war that Saudi Arabia and its Sunni allies are waging against Iran and the rest of the “Shiite axis.”The bottom line seems to be that Saudi Arabia — one of the most important allies of the former Lebanon, the moderate, modern, advanced Lebanon that for decades was controlled by a Christian Maronite-Sunni alliance — has decided to pull away, to wash its hands.It is giving up on its allies and leaving Lebanon in the control of Iran, Hezbollah and the new alliance that has taken shape there between various Christian Maronites (Michel Aoun and his men) and the Shiites, who today constitute the country’s largest community.In many respects, the Saudi decision represents a recognition of defeat: Lebanon is now controlled by Iran and Hezbollah, and therefore every dollar transferred there as military or government aid simply strengthens Hezbollah at the expense of the remaining moderate Sunnis and anti-Syrian Christians.Underlining the point, Iran has moved quickly to fill the vacuum left by Riyadh. A Foreign Ministry spokesman in Tehran announced Tuesday that Iran is ready to discuss providing military help to the Lebanese Army “if an official request for such assistance is made.”It’s unlikely that the Saudis and the UAE will be the only Sunni states to reach the conclusion that Lebanon is lost. Riyadh tends to takes steps like this only when it has the full backing of the other Gulf states.Why have the Saudis acted now rather than earlier? Apparently they’ve finally concluded that Lebanon’s political circus is beyond repair and that any further effort to preserve Lebanon’s old political framework, and to pretend that the democratic show goes on, only serves Hezbollah and the Shiites. More than this, from the Saudi perspective Lebanon is inseparable from the war with Iran unfolding in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and beyond. Preserving the appearance of a functioning government in Lebanon does nothing to help the Sunni axis; it merely strengthens Hezbollah’s position as the group that runs Lebanon.Where is all this heading? Certainly to a deepening of interreligious tensions inside Lebanon. The armed confrontation there between Sunnis and Shiites, which has played out in wars between terror organizations until now, is likely to escalate sooner rather than later.It may also see the Saudis take the major gamble of entering the Syrian conflict.Washington and Moscow may be seeking support everywhere in the Middle East for their call for a ceasefire in Syria from Saturday, February 27, almost five years after the start of the civil war. But both Russia and the US know full well that this will be a very limited ceasefire at best (Islamic State and the Al-Nusra Front are not part of it). At worst, it will collapse in the deafening crash of still deeper conflict.

Italy’s highest court on Wednesday nullified a regional law in Lombardy dubbed “anti-mosque” by critics, easing regulations on the construction of places of worship in the country’s north.The law, drawn up by the anti-immigrant party Northern League and voted in at the start of 2015, tightened rules regarding all religious buildings, but was widely believed to target the wealthy region’s Muslim community.It required new places of worship fit into the “architecture of the Lombard landscape” and be voted in by local referendum. An ultra-Orthodox MK reportedly compared the Reform movement to a mentally ill person.Yisrael Eichler of the United Torah Judaism party made his remarks Tuesday in the lead-up to a Knesset debate the next day on the Supreme Court’s decision that non-Orthodox converts can immerse in a public mikvah, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.“Not every mentally ill person can come to the operating room and decide the rules of medicine and force the hospital to have an operation by whatever way works,” Eichler was quoted as saying. “The High Court can’t force a hospital to allow the court’s surgeons and the court’s medicines into the operating room. And so it is intolerable that the directors of ritual baths will have to allow organizers of Reform religion-changing ceremonies into a Jewish ritual bath.”Eichler also reportedly said the Supreme Court has “no authority to enforce Jewish law, whose source of authority is the Torah, which the High Court does not recognize as a source of its legal authority.”He also said: “The High Court decision to force the members of the Jewish religion to carry out ritual bath rules and conversions according to the Reform religion, which does not believe in the purity of the ritual bath … is a serious infraction of freedom of religion for the members of the Jewish religion, which has clear laws. Religious freedom is promised in the Declaration of Independence to the members of all religions in the State of Israel, including the believers in the Jewish religion.”Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that mikvahs in Israel must open to non-Orthodox conversion rites. Previously, Israeli mikvahs have denied access for conversion immersions to Reform and Conservative converts. Israel’s mikvahs are run by Israel’s Religious Services Ministry, which operates in lock-step with the Orthodox-dominated Chief Rabbinate.Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, in a statement Wednesday called Eichler’s remarks “another example of the extreme intolerance of the ultra-Orthodox religious establishment. Clearly they feel a seismic shift in their decades-old monopoly on Judaism in Israel. Their stranglehold on Judaism is being loosened, and their response is desperate and pathetic.“It is hard to imagine what twisted Torah MK Eichler studies when he characterizes the largest movement in Jewish life as ‘mentally ill.’ Our Torah teaches us the values of pluralism and of tolerance — and it teaches us not to use phrases like ‘mentally ill’ as an epithet.”Rabbis Denise Eger and Steven Fox, president and chief executive, respectively, of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the Reform movement’s rabbinical organization, called Eichler’s comments “disturbing and ignorant,” adding that they are “insensitive and backwards.”“At the very moment that hundreds of Reform rabbis from North America are in Jerusalem celebrating the vibrancy of Reform Judaism in Israel and calling for tolerance, the MK’s comments are an unfortunate reminder of how far we still have to go to achieve equality for all Jews in Israel and around the world,” they said in a statement. “We condemn these comments and the worldview they represent.”In an Op-Ed posted Wednesday on the website of the Jewish Press, an Orthodox Jewish weekly newspaper, Eichler asserted that “the prime minister, the supreme court and the secular establishment are subservient to the Reform millionaires.”He added that Reform clergy are “investing millions in bribing Israeli public opinion shapers, something the Christian missionaries and certainly the Muslim preachers would dare to do.”In comments on Wednesday, meanwhile, Deputy Education Minister Meir Porush, also from the United Torah Judaism, reportedly termed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Monday meeting with the leaders of the Reform and Conservative movements as being “like a stab in the heart of true Judaism.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry said efforts to revive the stalled Israeli Palestinian peace process need to take a “slightly different” course than they have in the past, but stopped short Wednesday of endorsing a French proposal for a regional peace conference.Kerry also said he saw the justification behind the multilateral confab, backing comments reportedly made by an Israeli general weeks ago that rampant violence over the past month would only get worse without a diplomatic effort on the horizon.Paris’s proposal — to convene two regional peace conferences aimed at advancing the implementation of the two-state solution, and unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood should the effort fail — is “a reflection of the frustration the international community feels” about the turmoil in the region, the US top diplomat told a hearing on foreign policy at the US House of Representatives. “That why we remain committed to Israel, to Israel’s stability, committed also, however, to move the process forward and bring the parties to the table.”But Kerry said the US was still not ready to support the plan, which Israel opposes, saying Washington was “evaluating it.”“We don’t have all the details,” Kerry said about the French plan. “We’re trying to get some details of what exactly is it trying to achieve and how and what are the rules of the road would be.”Kerry asserted at the hearing that the US government opposed any unilateral steps toward Palestinian statehood.“But what’s happening now is that there’s a multilateral movement that is growing that is concerned about any number of things,” he said.Also in the hearing, Kerry quoted Israel media reports about statements made by IDF military intelligence chief Herzl Halevi, who told a Knesset committee that lack of progress with the Palestinians could lead to more violence.“So my hope is everybody will take note of that, not as a threat but as a sense of reality about the downward spiral that comes if there isn’t an active process that is genuine, and I think that requires a slightly different formula than has existed previously,” Halevi said.Twenty-nine Israelis and three foreign nationals have been killed in a wave of Palestinian terrorism and violence since October, during which nearly 170 Palestinians have also been killed, some two-thirds of them while attacking Israelis, and the rest during clashes with troops, according to the Israeli army.Meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah at the same time as Kerry spoke, US President Barack Obama said both had discussed ways to reduce the violence via a diplomatic solution.“We continue to agree that it’s important for us to provide both sides a sense of possibility and hope, and not simply despair,” Obama said.Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the French proposal during a press conference in Berlin.“The French initiative, as it has been published, is questionable,” Netanyahu said in response to a question by The Times of Israel. “There is one way to advance peace – direct negotiations without preconditions between the sides.
