Second New York Prison Escapee Said to Be Shot and Captured-By WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM, RICK ROJAS and J. DAVID GOODMANJUNE 28, 2015-NEW YORK TIMES
MALONE, N.Y. — David Sweat, the surviving prison escapee on the run in northern New York, was shot by a state trooper on Sunday, according to three people briefed on the matter. His condition was unknown.
Mr. Sweat, 35, was alive and in custody, according to two of the people. The shooting occurred after a State Police sergeant saw Mr. Sweat walking down a road toward him, according to one of the people. The sergeant ordered Mr. Sweat to stop, but he broke into a run and the sergeant, a firearms instructor, opened fire, the person said. It was not immediately clear how many shots were fired or whether Mr. Sweat was armed. The confrontation with Mr. Sweat, near the town of Constable, N.Y., came two days after a federal agent shot and killed the other escaped prisoner from a maximum-security prison in New York, Richard W. Matt. The agent shot Mr. Matt three times in the head with a semiautomatic weapon, according to results from an autopsy released on Sunday. The number of officers searching for Mr. Sweat had increased to 1,300 on Sunday, according to the New York State Police, as aviation and K-9 units helped comb through a roughly 22-square-mile area around the towns of Malone and Duane.Earlier Sunday, the State Police said the search was continuing “around the clock” and despite a pelting rain that prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flood watch for the area through 8 a.m. Monday. The agent from a tactical unit of the United States Border and Customs Protection agency who killed Mr. Matt, 49, on Friday afternoon opened fire after officials said Mr. Matt, armed with a 20-gauge shotgun, did not put up his hands when ordered to do so in the woods around Malone, N.Y., about 40 miles from the prison. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Michael Sikirica at Albany Medical Center on Saturday, revealed the toll that weeks on the run in the dense woods near the Canadian border had taken on Mr. Matt, who escaped with Mr. Sweat from the Clinton Correctional Facility. They were discovered missing on June 6, spurring a sprawling manhunt across the state and beyond.Mr. Matt’s body was covered in bug bites and blisters in his “lower extremities,” the autopsy found, according to a statement from the State Police, as well as “minor abrasions consistent with living in the woods for three weeks.”
David Sweat's DNA Found on Food a Mile From Where Richard Matt Killed, Official Says-Jun 28, 2015, 1:24 PM ET-By EMILY SHAPIRO and AARON KATERSKY-Aaron Katersky-Correspondent, ABC News-via Good Morning America
DNA belonging to the convicted murderer who remains on the loose after escaping prison three weeks ago was found on remnants of food a mile from where his accomplice was killed Friday, an official briefed on the manhunt efforts said Sunday.About 1,300 law enforcement officers were involved in the search for David Sweat as they concentrated their efforts near the village of Malone, New York, about 20 miles from where fellow escapee Richard Matt was found in a wooded area Friday. The pair escaped the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., on June 6.The official said a man wearing dark clothes was spotted in the woods sometime Saturday about a mile south of where Matt was killed.
Timeline of Manhunt for the Escaped Convicted Murderers-Matt was discovered by Customs and Border Protection agents Friday who heard him coughing, the official said. Whiskey was found nearby and investigators believe he was "sipping on" it during the manhunt, said the official. Escaped New York Inmate Richard Matt Shot and Killed by Police, Search Ongoing for David Sweat-Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill believes a break in the search for Sweat will come in the next few days."Something's going to give," he said Saturday. "He's going to make a mistake. We're going to find him in this perimeter or we're going get a decent lead."The search focused on an established perimeter near the village of Malone and the town of Duane in Franklin County. But Mulverhill said that perimeter wasn't the only search area."We're not all involved in the perimeter area, so we're not putting all our eggs in one basket," he said. "There are a number of leads outside the perimeter that are being investigated and those leads are being run through."
According to Mulverhill, the rainy weather gives searchers several advantages in their search."We relieve [the searchers] from their posts, they're able to come back, get a nice hot meal ... have an opportunity to get dried off, change footwear, change their gear ... and then head back out to post," Mulverhill said. "Sweat doesn't have that opportunity."Mulverhill said he believed Sweat was likely fatigued and "getting desperate."" He's not getting regular meals, he's not getting regular sleep," he said. "I think he's fatigued. I think he's getting desperate."
New York manhunt for prison escapee heats up after accomplice killed-Reuters By Pete DeMola-JUNE 28,15-YAHOONEWS
MALONE, N.Y. (Reuters) - Hundreds of law enforcement officers hunting for a convicted murderer who escaped from a New York state maximum security prison scoured an area of near the Canadian border on Saturday, a day after a fellow escapee was killed.David Sweat, a 35-year-old imprisoned for killing a sheriff's deputy, remained at large three weeks after taking flight from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. His accomplice on Friday was shot to death by police near Malone, New York.
About 1,200 federal, state and local law enforcement officers on Saturday were searching a 22 square-mile (57 square-km) area along state route 30 between the towns of Malone and Duane in northern New York state, New York State Police said in a statement.Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill told reporters on Saturday that Sweat was probably not in good condition after surviving three weeks on the run without consistent access to food, rest and shelter, USA Today reported."He's going to be tired and he's going to make a mistake," Mulverhill said, according to the paper. After Richard Matt was fatally shot by U.S. Border Patrol officers, a tight security perimeter was set up in the area, where Sweat was believed to be holed up.
New York State Police declined to provide additional information on why they thought Sweat was in the area.Malone is 27 miles (43 km) northwest of the Clinton prison, where the convicts were discovered missing on June 6.Police tracked Matt to the Malone area, just south of the Canadian border, when two burglaries were reported this week at backwoods cabins. DNA evidence on items found at the sites indicated Matt's presence. On Friday, after he apparently fired a shot at a passing camping trailer, officers spotted and confronted Matt outside a cabin, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico told reporters.Border Patrol agents warned Matt to drop the shotgun he was holding, and shot and killed him when he failed to comply, police said.In making their escape, Matt and Sweat cut through the walls of their adjoining cells and sneaked along the catwalk on the other side to a steam pipe, slithered through the pipe and popped out of a manhole outside the prison walls. Two prison workers have been charged with aiding them. Gene Palmer, 57, a corrections officer for 27 years, was suspended without pay from his job, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said.He is accused of bringing hacksaw blades and a screwdriver bit to the inmates, hidden in frozen hamburger meat supplied by Joyce Mitchell, 51, a training supervisor in the prison tailor shop.Mitchell, who was also charged in connection with the escape, told investigators that the inmates expected her to pick them up outside the prison walls and drive a getaway car. When she instead checked into a local hospital complaining of panic attacks, the escapees were apparently forced to take off on foot through the rugged, mountainous terrain in the northwest corner of the state.Matt was convicted in the 1997 torture, murder and dismemberment of his boss in Tonawanda, New York.Sweat was convicted in the shooting death of a Broome County sheriff's deputy on July 4, 2002.
