The professional protesters were out in force this weekend at Burnaby Mountain in British Columbia.
They were trying to stop a pipeline from the Alberta oilsands to the Port of Vancouver that would then load up tanker ships for export. This would be a disaster, the protesters say. They’re a bit late though. That pipeline, called TransMountain, has been happily pumping away since 1953. According to the port authority, in more than half a century there has never been a navigational incident involving a tanker ship. But that’s a trivial detail to the low-information protesters. They only know that they hate fossil fuels, even as they all drive up the mountain, overflowing the parking lot. They even set up a gasoline-powered generator. But the protests aren’t real. Oh, they look real enough. Over the weekend, 100 angry leftists shouted at police, who finally came in to escort land surveyors, who had to obtain a court order to stop the harassment against them. But the protesters were not deterred by the RCMP or the court order. Some carried signs comparing the Mounties to Nazis; one masked man swore up a blue storm at a female RCMP officer. One Sikh policeman had garbage thrown on him; another cop was spit on. One man violently stormed the line of police. That is the face of the environmentalist movement today. It’s un-Canadian.Not just that their tactics are shocking and violent and undemocratic. But that they are literally directed and funded by non-Canadian bosses. All of the leading anti-oilsands groups in Canada are financed, to varying degrees, by foreign interests. Two of the most visible organizers, Tzeporah Berman and Ben West, work for a U.S.-based lobby group called Forest Ethics, financed by the Tides Foundation. Real Canadians believe in the rule of law, and accepting the result of elections. But American campaign managers have other goals. It’s odd, this U.S.-funded war on the oilsands. The Tides Foundation out of San Francisco, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund out of New York – they and a half dozen other foundations have poured tens of millions of dollars into fighting against Canadian resource industries. But never against OPEC or Russian oil, even though they are much larger producers who don’t share our ethical values. That’s telling. It’s almost like they don’t really oppose oil – just our oil.But what these foreign groups lack in democratic legitimacy, they can make up for in money. They flew in Brigette DePape, the rogue Senate page, famous for interrupting Parliament with a 'Stop Harper!' sign. Dan Wallace, another professional protester at Burnaby Mountain, had his calling card too: “I totally advocate and stand with anybody that wants to destroy a system that’s going to continue oppressing people. I advocate direct violence, direct action - against the cops,” he said recently. And of course, the most famous environmentalist-for-hire, David Suzuki himself, made a cameo appearance. The David Suzuki Foundation has taken cash from the Tides Foundation, and runs $9 million a year through their Canadian “charitable” number. Suzuki had just jetted in from Malaysia, and came to give an anti-capitalist speech, before returning to his $8 million home in Vancouver (he also owns three other properties in the province.)
This wasn’t a grassroots protest. This was a foreign-funded attack.Joe Oliver had it right – they’re not Canadian, at least not in their values. They’re foreign radicals. And now they’re ignoring our courts and attacking our police.
Anti-pipeline protesters and their multi-million dollar enablers-Vivian Krause, Special to Financial Post | January 15, 2014 | Last Updated: Jan 15 9:06 AM ET-Anti-oil sands protester Sean Devlin holds a sign during an event with Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the Vancouver Board of Trade on Monday Jan. 6, 2013.
Tides USA runs a multi-million dollar, anti-pipeline campaign that would landlock Canadian oil
Starting the year off with a bang, two anti-pipeline activists, Sean Devlin and Shireen Soofi, disrupted an event featuring Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Vancouver last week. Holding signs to call for action on climate change, they got in front of the television cameras and within striking distance of the Prime Minister.“We won’t stop until the Conservative government is out of power, we won’t stop until the Enbridge pipeline is stopped,” Devlin told CBC after the stunt, promising to go “to great lengths.”Mr. Devlin is a well-known activist and man of many hats. He’s a stand-up comedian. He’s also a central figure in a network of activists supported by the U.S. Tides Foundation (“Tides USA”). The hub of this network is Hollyhock, an ocean-front retreat centre situated on Cortes, a remote island in British Columbia.Devlin is also part of Truthfool Communications, a company that provides “creative and strategic services” to various organizations, including Vision Vancouver, the political party of Vancouver’s Mayor, Gregor Robertson. Truthfool has also done work for LeadNow and Greenpeace, both of which are funded by Tides and other sources.Devlin’s involvement with Hollyhock and other Tides-funded organizations is significant because Tides runs a multi-million dollar, anti-pipeline campaign that would landlock Canadian oil within North America, continuing the U.S. monopoly on Canadian oil exports to the detriment of Canada’s economy. With the launch of a web-site called “Sh**HarperDid,” Devlin came to prominence in 2011. His web-site was re-launched last year with a new focus on criticizing government support for pipelines crucial to the export of Canadian energy. Hollyhock promotes the new, anti-pipeline version of Devlin’s work.“With the relaunch of Sh**HarperDid, Truthfool’s goal is to move one million youth from being “not at all interested” in politics to “slightly interested” by inspiring them to vote,” Hollyhock says at its web-site. Hollyhock also says that it offers Mr. Devlin “an opportunity to bring forward a key challenge he and his team face as they prepare their national campaign roll-out.”Hollyhock’s flagship event is a five-day annual conference, held in June. Last year, Mr. Devlin was a featured speaker along with Nathan Cullen, the N.D.P. Member of Parliament for the Skeena-Bulkley Valley on the north coast of BC, and Eriel Deranger from Fort Chipewayan. The retreat included workshops, yoga, an oyster barbecue and a new moon dance party. One workshop was titled, “the future of movement marketing on the web,” and another, “Canada 2015 vs. Canada 2030: The paradox of electoral organizing.”Hollyhock says that it has helped establish British Columbia as a hub of the emerging social economy. That doesn’t come cheap.Hollyhock operates with substantial funding from two federally registered, Canadian charities: the Leadership Institute and the Nextwave Foundation. The president of both is Joel Solomon, a native of Tennessee. Mr. Solomon is a long-time director and past chairman of Tides, and past vice-chair of Tides Canada. Hollyhock’s CEO is Dana Bass Solomon, Joel’s wife.Hollyhock’s Leadership Institute has annual revenue of $2.2-million. Its payroll is $1.1-million for a staff with nine full-time and more than 100 part-time employees, tax returns show.In 2012, Nextwave’s revenue was $1.9-million of which 61% was from outside Canada. For 2011 and 2012, Nextwave’s expenditures were half a million and 90% went to Hollyhock ($455,000). In 2011, Tides USA paid Nextwave US$967,000 for shares in Hollyhock Farm Ltd, tax documents indicate. At the time, Mr. Solomon was the board chair of Tides and president of both Nextwave. He has also been president of Hollyhock Farm Ltd. Tides USA also invests $257,000 per year in Renewal2, an investment firm in which Mr. Solomon has a 25% share.Nextwave also received $377,591 from Tides Canada, up from $151,000 the year before. Tides Canada also runs a program called Inner Activist, a mentoring and coaching program which promises to help activists become “radically more effective.” During 2011 and 2012, Tides Canada funded this program at a cost of at least $748,000.Activism is part of democracy. Mr. Devlin and other activists have the right to lawful protest. But the next time that professional activists pull a costly, potentially dangerous stunt, the media should call on the carpet not only the activists but the organizations that support them.Vivian Krause is a Vancouver-based researcher and writer.
