And we must stop the so called non-violent extremists from inciting hatred and intolerance in our schools, our universities and yes, even our prisons.Of course there are some who will argue that this is not compatible with free speech and intellectual inquiry.But I say: would we sit back and allow right-wing extremists, Nazis or Klu Klux Klansmen to recruit on our university campuses? No.
So we shouldn’t stand by and just allow any form of non-violent extremism. We need to argue that prophecies of a global war of religion pitting Muslims against the rest of the world. Western governments may consider their policies in the Muslim world to be noble and well-intentioned, but make no mistake, there are many who believe – rightly or wrongly – that the West has a deep antipathy toward Muslims.If this were not so, one young man asked me recently during a random discussion, why is it that the only countries that get bombed time and again by Western countries are Muslim ones? Just as Western countries feel the pain of fellow Christians around the world, he said, so do Muslims about their kin. Another youngster wondered what Western leaders expect Muslims to do every time a Muslim country is bombed – hold a parade and thank the bombers for a job well done? If people who already feel alienated are now going to be targeted for not saying the right things or for not seeing the world the way government sees it, we are heading for more trouble.Cameron is right when he says that “we need to argue that prophecies of a global war of religion pitting Muslims against the rest of the world are nonsense.” But how do we do that? We do it through vigorous debate, not by shutting down views the government doesn’t like. Those who preach hate and counsel the killing of innocents should be given no quarter. But criticizing the West should not be a crime, because there is a lot to criticize.In a rare moment of candour in 2002, then British foreign secretary Jack Straw told the New Statesman: “A lot of the problems we are having to deal with now – I have to deal with now – are a consequence of our colonial past … an interesting history for us, but not an entirely honourable one.”The best way to deal with discontent that breeds violence is to create channels and forums in schools, universities, wherever – where we can challenge and be challenged on our views about one another.
