Hamas on Monday confirmed that it had sent out a drone over Israel earlier in the day. A Hamas spokesperson said that the Izz-a-Din al-Qassam wing of the terror group had dispatched the drone, and that the terror group had more of them.The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), apparently laden with explosives, was shot down by the IDF near the port city of Ashdod Monday morning.A Patriot missile was dispatched to take the drone down at about 6:30 AM, with debris from the drone falling on an Ashdod beach.The IDF is examining what remains of the drone, a spokesperson said.Hamas claimed on its website Monday that the drone was completely home-grown, engineered and constructed by Hamas terrorists.The site said that the drone was “another of the many more surprises that await the enemy.”According to the site, Hamas is capable of producing three kinds of drones.A Hamas spokesperson said that the drone that was shot down had actually done two other flyovers of Israel earlier Monday night. A second drone had also been dispatched, but the organization lost contact with it.Earlier Tuesday morning, the IDF declared the Ashkelon coast a closed military zone, when it received intelligence that the Hamas drone was on its way to Israel.The Air Force conducted a rehearsal in April for an event in which an enemy UAV infiltrates Israeli airspace. Seven days after Operation Protective Edge began to stop a constant barrage of rocket fire from Gaza, the IDF has begun training its paratroopers for a ground offensive.Arutz Sheva obtained exclusive footage of the training exercises, all of which feature tactics for urban warfare.The Security Cabinet approved an order to call up 40,000 soldiers for reserve duty ahead of a possible ground offensive last week.As of Sunday morning, roughly 33,000 reserve soldiers were estimated to have been called up, as preparations to deepen the offensive against Hamas and Islamic Jihad continues.

The IDF has struck more than 100 terror targets on Monday, officials announced Monday afternoon, totaling 1,535 targets eliminated since Operation Protective Edge began seven days ago. Targets tackled Monday include 33 rocket launchers, eight missile production sites, four civilian homes used as command posts, and seven terror tunnels. The Israeli Navy also attacked several medium-range rocket launching sites."The IDF is determined and will continue to attack terrorist targets systematically to cause significant damage to the Hamas terrorist organization, and will work for the destruction of terrorist networks that operate to harm Israeli citizens," the IDF Spokesperson's Office said in a statement Monday.The Iron Dome intercepted two rockets over Tel Aviv on Monday evening; no injuries or damage were reported.Hamas has fired over 1,000 rockets on Israel over the past week, the IDF stated Monday morning. Of those, 201 were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system; 754 have hit Israeli soil.

Amid a rising chorus of condemnation of the steep civilian death toll in Gaza – there were 172 fatalities in total by Palestinian accounts as of Monday – a senior Israeli air force commander who has flown combat sorties all throughout the past week asserted that the fact-checking of possible targets and in-air awareness of his pilots to the possibility of harming civilians is unrivaled.“I don’t think there’s an equivalent anywhere in the world,” said Lt. Col. T, the commander of a squadron of F-16Is, the air force’s most advanced model of that aircraft. “And I am familiar with many other air forces.”The officer rejected the notion that the operational protocol of “roof knocking” – dropping a flare first on the roof of a structure as a warning to civilians – has limited the army’s success in its operation in Gaza. “I see it as a source of strength,” he said.A statement from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday decried “the impact on Palestinian families of Israeli military action,” noting, in addition, that “too many Palestinian civilians have been killed.”The current operation began on July 8 and came on the backdrop of the abduction and murder of three Israeli teens; the subsequent arrest of hundreds of Hamas personnel and operatives in the West Bank; the murder, by Jews apparently, of a Palestinian teenager from East Jerusalem; and a steady drip of rocket fire from Gaza, which Hamas first refused to halt and then joined.Late last Monday, after Israel bombed an offensive tunnel dug by Hamas, the Gaza-based organization launched a salvo of rockets on southern Israel, shattering the unofficial ceasefire that had been in effect since the end of Operation Pillar of Defense, triggering yet another mini war.Thus far the campaign has been waged mostly from the air. A sudden change of circumstance, such as the appearance of civilians on or near the target, means immediate cancellation, he said. “I can say categorically, if the slightest doubt arises, then they don’t fire.”The squadron commander said he and the other pilots have been sleeping “in drizzles,” a few hours here and a few hours there.The fact that the rocket fire has covered large swaths of Israel means that the “battle is also at home,” he said. Nonetheless, despite the fact that the pilots’ view from above means they often see rocket fire directed at their houses, “we do everything possible to avoid harming those that are not relevant” to the target.Gaza-based terrorists have fired over 1,000 rockets at Israel; the air force has responded with an air offensive that, at present, is nearly twice as intense as the November 2012 Operation Pillar of Defense.Speaking of the destruction on the ground in Gaza, Lt. Col. Hamas on Monday confirmed that it had sent out a drone over Israel earlier in the day. A Hamas spokesperson said that the Izz-a-Din al-Qassam wing of the terror group had dispatched the drone, and that the terror group had more of them.The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), apparently laden with explosives, was shot down by the IDF near the port city of Ashdod Monday morning.A Patriot missile was dispatched to take the drone down at about 6:30 AM, with debris from the drone falling on an Ashdod beach.The IDF is examining what remains of the drone, a spokesperson said.Hamas claimed on its website Monday that the drone was completely home-grown, engineered and constructed by Hamas terrorists.The site said that the drone was “another of the many more surprises that await the enemy.”According to the site, Hamas is capable of producing three kinds of drones.A Hamas spokesperson said that the drone that was shot down had actually done two other flyovers of Israel earlier Monday night. A second drone had also been dispatched, but the organization lost contact with it.Earlier Tuesday morning, the IDF declared the Ashkelon coast a closed military zone, when it received intelligence that the Hamas drone was on its way to Israel.The Air Force conducted a rehearsal in April for an event in which an enemy UAV infiltrates Israeli airspace. Both jet fighter and combat helicopter squadrons took part in the rehearsal, and practiced interception of a UAV near Israel's border, reported the Air Force website.
