25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft (OCCULT-DECEPTION) to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.
26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

Ratzinger to keep papal name Benedict XVI

Ratzinger will still be addressed as “Your Holiness” and is to be given the title “Pope Emeritus” when he steps down from the Throne of St. Peter. He will wear a simple white cassock but will no longer be able to wear the red papal shoes. The first Congregation of Cardinals will be held on 4 March

ANDREA TORNIELLI vatican city Joseph Ratzinger will be keeping his papal name when he leaves the Throne of Peter after 8 pm on 28 February: he will keep the name Benedict XVI and the title “His Holiness” and will be called 'Pope Emeritus' or 'Roman Pontiff Emeritus'.During a press conference this morning, the Vatican’s spokesman explained that Ratzinger will continue to wear the “simple white” papal cassock, but without the shoulder cape. Fr. Lombardi also said he would no longer wear the red papal shoes. “The Pope did have a brown pair as well – the spokesman explained – and was particularly fond of a pair of shoes that were given to him as a gift in Leon, during his trip to Mexico in 2012.”At 8 pm on Thursday his papal ring of office will be destroyed. Benedict XVI will continue to wear a ring but it will not be the papal one. On the evening of 28 February, the start of the sede vacante period, the Swiss Guards in charge of guarding the Pope will leave Castel Gandolfo that evening given that there will be no Pope.The general congregations will be convened by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano, on 1 March: this means that the first congregation will be held on 4 March, not before. The date of the Conclave will not be known before next week.

POPE Benedict XVI has issued a decree allowing cardinals to bring forward a conclave to elect his successor, as the resignation of a top cardinal and deepening intrigue in the Vatican clouded the run-up to the vote.

"I leave the College of Cardinals the possibility to bring forward the start of the conclave once all cardinals are present," said the Pope, who steps down on Thursday.The conclave is traditionally held between 15 and 20 days after the papal seat becomes vacant although that period normally includes nine days of mourning for a deceased pope.A climate of intrigue and scandal has gripped the Vatican at the approach of the conclave, accentuated by the resignation announced on Monday of British Cardinal Keith O'Brien over allegations of inappropriate behaviour.O'Brien, who as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh was leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland, denies the allegations that he made sexual advances towards priests in the 1980s.But O'Brien, Britain's most senior Catholic cleric, said: "For any failures, I apologise to all whom I have offended."He added he would not take part in the conclave to avoid the media attention he would attract.Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said cardinals who will kick off meetings to discuss the upcoming conclave on Friday could settle on a date "in the very first days of March"."The Holy Father has decided that the documents, which only he has seen, will be exclusively available to his successor," Lombardi told a media conference.Italy's Panorama news weekly and the Repubblica daily had said the cardinals' December report to the Pope contained allegations of corruption and of attempts to blackmail gay Vatican clergy, as well as favouritism based on gay relationships.They submitted the report to Benedict just before the Pope pardoned his former butler Paolo Gabriele, who had been jailed for leaking the papal memos in the so-called "Vatileaks" scandal, while banishing him from the Vatican.Suspicions linger that more people were involved.

All eyes will be on the Pope Wednesday, when he makes his final public appearance as pontiff.The papal General Audience is held on Wednesdays, when the Pope is in Rome, to give pilgrims and visitors the chance to see the head of the Catholic Church and receive a blessing.While it's usually held inside a hall in the Vatican, Benedict will make his address from a window overlooking St. Peter's Square instead.

The change has been made to accommodate the massive crowds expected to flock to the Vatican for the historic event. The Vatican says 50,000 tickets have already been requested for the occasion.Also breaking from tradition, the Pope will be driven around St. Peter's Square in the popemobile ahead of the audience, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. local time."The truth is these words that he speaks tomorrow will be the last ones in a pubic nature," CTV's Martin Seemungal told Canada AM on Tuesday.Benedict is expected to become the first pope to resign in six centuries when he makes his retirement official Thursday night.His final public prayer ceremony was Sunday, in a blessing that drew tens of thousands of people who listened to the Pope reassure them he wasn’t "abandoning" the church.Benedict told the crowd that God is calling him to dedicate himself "even more to prayer and meditation," which he will do in a monastery being renovated for him on the grounds behind Vatican City's ancient walls."But this doesn’t mean abandoning the church," he said. Maria Chiara Giorda * Rome The two thirds majority rule for the election of a new pope was set in 1179 ( Alexander III’s Licet de vitanda constitution) and did away with a number of setbacks but also had some side effects such as lengthy holiday periods and a great deal of intervention from imperial powers, which in some cases ended up making cardinals hostages of their own plans. Even Roman Catholics found a way to express the absolute need to see a Pope installed in record time: if the Church was meant to be led regimen unius persona¸ those who had to ensure this were under a lot of pressure to do so.When Innocence III died in 1216, the citizens of Perugia adopted the system used in other civil procedures to speed up the process: they forced cardinals to elect the Pope through a forced seclusion; in 1241, when Gregory IX died, the Roman senate, headed by Matteo Rosso Orsini, locked the ten cardinal in charge of electing the Pope in the ramshackle palace of the Septizodium, erected by Emperor Septimius Severus on the Platine Hill, because they could not agree on the next successor. The cardinals, who were almost tortured by the violent guards had to find a way to overcome the hesitations of Frederick II who wanted a Pope who would favour the unification of the Imperial and Sicilian Kingdoms. This was the first ever Conclave, but there was absolutely no willingness to accept or formalise this papal election method.When Clement V died in 1268, after 18 months of deliberation, the seventeen cardinal electors were locked inside the Papal Palace of Viterbo, their physical strength tested to the limit: all they got was bread and water and the city’s magistrates even had the roof of the palace removed. The cardinals only elected the new Pope – Gregory X – after two years, nine months and two days, when the “blockade” was removed and the palace restored. Some years later, the seclusion process was regulated through the promulgation of the Ubi periculum constitution during the Second Council of Lyon in 1274 and the conclave was established: cardinal electors had to be locked in seclusion , in the place where the former pope had died, after a maximum mourning period of ten days.The cardinals were supposed to mix during the scrutiny process and their food rationed progressively  (they were fed normally for three days, then got one meal a day for five days and finally fasted on bread and water). Contact with the outside world was limited, no cash movements could be made, cardinals had no access to money and could make no acquisitions. These rules were soon scrapped as they were deemed too strict. They were only re-introduced at the end of the 13^th century.
